Non locking throttle stabilizer.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the kaoko safe to use.

Yes, since the Kaoko unit only uses friction to keep your throttle open, it cannot fully lock your throttle  and can be overridden in an instant and is 100% safe in the hands of a responsible rider.

How does it work?

When engaged, the Kaoko simply applies friction to the motorcycle throttle sleeve that is located underneath the rubber grip. This allows you to set the throttle at any position and even allows you to adjust the set position on the fly as you wish without needing to re-engage the unit every time.

Can I use the Kaoko if I already have electronic cruise control?

Yes! Since the Kaoko is purely a mechanical device, it does not interfere with your electronic cruise control and can be used in conjunction with electronic cruise control. This makes the Kaoko particularly useful when cruising at lower speeds where electronic cruise control cannot be engaged.

How long does it take to install?

Depending on the motorcycle, installation typically takes 5 – 10 minutes.

Does it work with aftermarket hand guards and heated grips?

Yes, we have units specifically designed for use with aftermarket hand guards or heated grips (or a combination of both!)

PRODUCT REVIEWS & APPLICATIONS

Twisted throttle, installation & review, aug 10, 2017.

“Looking for instructions on how you can install your Kaoko Throttle Lock? Maybe you’re wondering what the benefits are? You’re in the right place. This elegantly engineered but ultimately simple device holds the throttle in place for effective cruise control, especially on flat ground. The effect is enough to let you roll down the highway and give yourself a break. Imagine leaning back for a few miles, relaxing your right hand, and start to think that last 100 miles won’t be hard at all.”

Fitting should only be performed by a competent motorcycle mechanic, with full sight and comprehension of the enclosed fitting instructions. The Kaoko Throttle Stabilizer Kit consists of a simple, ingenious and robustly designed friction nut that is integral with a special Kaoko™ handle bar end weight. The Kaoko™ bar end weight is closely matched in appearance and weight to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) bar end weight. Most installations simply require the removal of the OEM bar end weight and the fitting of the Kaoko Throttle Stabilizer kit in its place. To Engage: Whilst rolling on the throttle, the friction nut can be gripped between your small finger and palm of your hand. This action tightens the nut and provides sufficient friction to set the throttle to the desired opening. (The friction is such that the rider may still open and close the throttle. It simply has a slight rotational resistance to it.) To Disengage: Whilst rolling off the throttle, grip the friction nut between your small finger and palm of your hand. The throttle should open and snap closed freely when correctly disengaged.

About Kaoko

Kaoko was established in 2001 after the owner, Roy Mentis, developed a long-range fuel tank for an adventure trip through the Kaokoveld in Namibia. The Kaokoveld, being one of the last remaining true wildernesses on earth, was the inspiration for the company's name. The Kaoko fuel tank was a great success, enabling Roy's passion for long distance motorcycling, however he encountered a more serious challenge on his adventure: overcoming an extremely tired wrist. This led to his design of Kaoko's first Throttle Control in 2001. Since 2001, Kaoko has gained a vast amount of experience in the design and manufacture of Throttle Controls. All of their Throttle Controls are bike specific and manufactured from materials of the highest engineering standards. In 2009 Kaoko won the prestigious SABS Design Excellence Award for the world renowned Kaoko Throttle Control. Kaoko are continuously involved in R&D and are proud to offer solutions for most popular makes of motorcycles entering the market. In 2013 Kaoko became the proud recipient of the Web Bike World Accessory of the Year Award. In 2015 the term Kaoko Throttle Stabilizer was coined, this being most applicable for the inherently twitchy fly-by-wire throttle systems, in addition to conventional cable linked throttle systems. As motorcycling is very much about throttle control, Kaoko believe all bikes should have the facility for the rider to simply set the rotational resistance of the throttle sleeve. Even bikes with an electronic cruise control can be improved with a Kaoko Throttle Stabilizer, since the stabilizer allows the rider to personalise the rotational resistance of the throttle sleeve simply, safely and intuitively. This sets the Kaoko system apart from certain other friction type devices, which only have a fully engaged or disengaged setting.

Tracer cruise control on MT09?

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I just found MCCRUISE https://www.mccruise.com/collection...aha-mt-09-fz-09-new-throttle-by-wire-mccruise Supposedly plug and play unit for $475 USD. That less than half what I spent on my exhaust and I know the cruise will make the bike much more enjoyable for me than the exhaust ever will. And possibly avoid a few tickets! lol Anyone with any experience from this company?

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I have MCCruise on my 2017 FZ-09. Expensive, but worth every penny, in my opinion. A true God send. The instructions are very specific and detailed. Don’t waste your money on an installer.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I must admit that after having electronic cruise control on the FZ10 and now the Tracer GT it's hard to consider any future purchase without it. I certainly miss it when I get on the FZ07.

I agree, I traded in a Road King with electronic cruise and I miss the cruise control! It worked better than any car cruise control I ever used. lol I was actually considering the Tracer 900 GT because it had the cruise, but I couldn't justify the $4K difference just to have cruise.

I don't know those heated grips are pretty darn nice too. Makes 40 degree days manageable, well that plus the windscreen.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I gave up electronic cruise on my F700 after having it on my last two bikes. I miss it, but really like the Kaoko throttle lock. Pros and cons I know, but it works very well. As I’ve posted a number of times before, setting partial resistance smooths out throttle response which electronic cruise cannot do. It’s also much less that can fail being a very simple mechanical device. Regarding safety, I never use it where I wouldn’t have time to manually disable it in an emergency. Even in your car, you have to decide when its safe to use. I looked at after market electronic cruise controls a while back. They were marketed as being a simple install, but owners have posted about them being the opposite. Lots of disassembly on the bike to get all the components interfaced, then time spent getting them calibrated to the bike. It was enough to turn me off and I do a fair amount of my own wrenching. I would suggest rather than listening to the easy peasy claims from the sellers sites, investigate experiences from customers who have done their own installs. It entails a lot more than swapping out a hand throttle and plugging in a couple of wires.

All great advise and I did ask if anyone had experience with the company. If I do nothing else correct I definitely research a product before I buy it. The company website offers the parts list and brochure. They ask you to email them and they will send you the install manual. They also have a install video, which to be honest is not an install video as the product is already installed on the bike they are showing you. All they really show you is where the connections need to be made on the bike. They do discuss calibrating it and say if you run into any issues with the install or calibration to email them before you spend hours troubleshooting because they probably have the answer to fix it. I plan on researching some more and I will email them and see what kind of feeling I get from them. If all goes well maybe I will do a write up on the install and be able to answer any questions for others interested in it???

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

Prior to the McCruise, I was looking at the now out of business Brandon Dist cruise control unit. I was sooo close to riding the 260 miles to MN/STP to have him install it but I hemmed/hawed too long. I did send feelers out to a few listed McCruise installers within a easy ride 400 mile distance but none either replied or stated they no longer installed. A local tech offered to install it but then I decided to sell the FZ. They certainly are beyond what I want to tackle..

Best thing I bought for my FZ was the Brandon cruise control unit. It was initially hard to justify the cost but after using it for a while it is irreplaceable. Any future bike of mine will have cruise control!

I sent them an email, so I will see what becomes of it. They are in Australia, so there is a little time difference. ;-)

quickstang87, isn't the Brandon Dist cruise, just the McCruise cruise control sold by Brandon Dist? Either way, glad to hear form someone that has an aftermarket cruise installed and is loving it. I am 99% sure I will be ordering the McCruise unit before the end of February. They have been very quick to answer my emails/questions and very informative. Seems I keep buying more and more for this bike. Can't even ride it right now because of winter. It is going to be a whole new bike come spring!!! lol

They are two completely different items. That said, McCruise was very quick to answer my questions. Just couldn't find any authorized installers in the midwest. They will forward you an install pdf. file if you ask.

That’s what winter’s for.

Installing the Brandon cruise control was easy and very straightforward. I wouldn't worry about needing to find an installer on the McCruise unit as it probably installs about the same.

Awesome, thank you for the response. I will be installing it myself. I have already received the install instructions from them and as you said, they are very specific with lots of photos. They also seem very quick to respond to emails, well after you account for the time difference. lol Anyway, I ordered it, but the website says 2-3 weeks back logged. I guess I will see when I get a shipping confirmation.

I seem to recall it took about two weeks. You’re going to be very pleased with the final product when it’s installed.

Brake Away Products this seems like an excellent cruise control and its all mechanical, and functions like an electronic one.

The Brake Away is just a "throttle lock" NOT a cruise control. You have to manually adjust your speed by hand. I am very surprised after all these years of production, they still advertise it as a cruise control unit on their website.

First post is trying to sell a throttle lock in a cruise control thread! Where the bank hammer???

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I have the Kaoko. No handgaurds, though. It's not cheap, however, once on, it's out of the way, discrete, and nothing sticking off the bar... However, the best feature is it's a tensioner. So, once you set it, you can move the throttle to any position and it'll stay in that position with no additional adjustment to the Kaoko. There's no chance of it getting "locked" in position either (I know... I tried). So... YGWYPF... (usually)

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I have a Kaoko waiting to be installed as soon as the temps are above freezing, probably June or July.

Hand Guards and Kaoko Throttle Control Can't say for sure about the OEM hand guards, HD PI, but I did put on the Barkbuster Storms, and then added the Kaoko Throttle Lock later and it worked fine. I think I used TT and they had a specific Kaoko TL for use with the Barkbusters. I'm not speaking from a strong position here, so take it for what it's worth, but I believe I read that the OEM hand guards are just plastic and have no impact protection. The BB Storms have a 3/4 inch wide metal bar that protects the hands in case of impact. I like mine. I seldom have to turn on the warmers because they're big enough to keep the cold air off my hands. Best/RR

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

It looks like the best available for quality and function. I just ordered one, not cheap but ...........

I have Kaoko installed with OEM hand guards and OEM heated grips. Not one problem.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I have Kaoko + OEM handguards on my '06. Slips a bit unless tight with my Oxford grips, but works well. Especially in flat FL. Would not be so useful, nor would any throttle lock, in hillier places.

I just installed mine, took about 10 minutes to install and about 20 to get it set up correctly. On the 2013 there is a plastic pin in the switch housing that has to be removed to set the bar depth at 2.5mm, mine was protruding 2.5mm so had to be moved 5mm. Once that's done its all fine tuning the tension for your preference. It works well and is of high quality. I do think it is way over priced though. I probably would buy it again. It is of a satin finish, the oem bar weights are glossy, its not really noticeable unless you know about it. Its bugging me so I will probably de-gloss the left bar end.

I'm not sure what you're referring to re: the plastic pin. I have a 2013, and didn't run into any obstruction at all. 10 minute install, and zero adjustment after that (except to set the tension - 5 seconds)... Have I missed something?

Bar depth has to be set at 2.5 mm into the throttle sleeve. My bar was protruding 2.5mm. There is an anti-rotation pin in the lower half of the switch housing that prevents you from moving the whole assembly inboard or outboard to set the proper depth. It had to be removed with a die grinder. It is in the instructions that come with the lock. Apparently you can damage your heated grips if it is not set properly. My bar end was sticking out of the sleeve to far; throttle lock would have done nothing on my bike as it was. It would have tightened against the bar end and stopped.

Ohhhhh... gotcha. Sounds like an issue specific to heated grips and the associated switch (which I don't have)... K. Mystery solved. Thanks.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

I can't speak for the Kaoko's designed to go with the OEM guards. However, the ones supplied through TT designed for use with Bark Busters now come with a hand full of thrust washers of differing sizes which eliminates having to grind the switch locator pin. Last I checked, TT was the only retailer carrying Kaoko updated with the thrust washers in assorted sizes. TT is the US distributor and that might be the explanation for that. Kaoko seems to be fairly responsive to direct emails regarding product issues.

I have the Kaoko installed with OEM hand guards and Oxford heated grips. I contacted Twisted Throttle to ensure I got the unit designed to work with the hand guards. Great customer service. Anyway, I love it. I don't use it often, so leave it too "loose" to be able to use with just rolling the right hand with the throttle. When I want to engage, I typically reach over with my left hand and tighten it - then adjust a bit with my throttle hand when needed. I am satisfied with the product. Looks good - works well. More expensive than some other options, but I would pay the same price again for this unit.

Kaoko throttle lock w/OEM hand guards I have the Kaoko throttle lock with OEM hand guards installed on my 2012 glee. I also have Oxford heated grips and all work fine together. I did NOT remove the locking pin as per the Kaoko instructions. The bar end is slightly larger but no big deal for me. The Kaoko is of high quality.

Kaoko Replacement Parts I ordered the Kaoko Throttle Lock from Twisted Throttle last summer for my 2012 DL650. Somehow I got the delrin adjustment nut cross threaded. Last night I broke the adjusting nut trying to get it back on straight. Dumb. I called TT this morning and they're sending me a replacement nut for $30. Who would have thought they could send replacement parts? They saved me $100.

Are these throttle locks dangerous in any way? I mean it sounds dangerous but I have never used one, so maybe i am completely mistaken.

kaoko cruise control tracer 900

You mean more dangerous than riding a motorcycle? (joke) I think any cruise control CAN be dangerous if you lose focus on your ride and surroundings while using it, but that's dangerous in and of itself. As for the Kaoko, while it uses friction to "lock" the throttle, it really doesn't lock it up - at least I've never experienced it as such. Manually rolling off the throttle without loosening the device has never been a problem. Escape the cage!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
