Cool Cruiser

Not sure what forum this really belongs to but I have a Royal Caribbean cruise booked through USAA. Booked several months ago, have changed room category several times and last week changed from Allure to Symphony all emailing my agent. I've spent more $$ each change and he's been very pleasant. Few days after changing I noticed prices went down so I called the main number and asked whoever answered to reprice my room. My agent just emailed me wanting to know if I called and talked to someone else? How would he know and why would it matter ? It went down $200 so shouldn't cut big into commission. I feel like something fishy is going on. Any thoughts? Thanks!

He'd know because they use computers and since he booked your cruise, he's your agent that would be in the system.  Plus, he probably gets an automated email about any clients who call in.  What exactly are you suspicious of?  Why would you think commission had anything to do with anything?

We've been USAA members for 39 years for insurance and car purchasing.  We've never use their travel service.   We also have credit cards through USAA.  Never had any issues with them.

In the past when I called to reprice a sold out category they have to put me on hold to call and check with RC to see if there really is a price drop. This time the other agent didn't call, he just said I can take $200 off. Then when the original agent emailed to see if I had talked to someone else it just seemed odd, but thanks for the explanation!

That is a bit odd - have never had one follow up, even when requested.

This is no different than people mentioning superstores for booking, etc which they do.  If an admin disagrees, they can remove it.  You do  not appear to be an admin.

This was the second time I used the USAA MEMBER TRAVEL PRIVILEGES. I tried booking directly but when I put in payment info, it asked me to call. The site is easy to use. But this time, I had to speak with an agent.

Ellie was my agent. I believe she is in Texas. She was patient, thorough, kind & spoke clearly. She found the fare I had identified on the website (which was lower than the one listed at the time of my call). Her effort saved me $ & made me feel appreciated as a customer. Never thought that spending $3000 would be a good experience; with Ellie, it was.

Week at El Cid via USAA Member Travel Privileges

We got a promotional week at El Cid. All we had to pay for was the "All Inclusive" fee. My wife and I had an awesome week. All the staff were very helpful, courteous, and attentive to our needs. My brother and sister in law did an "All Inclusive" via COSTCO a year ago (at a different resort in Cancun) and they described it as a "cruise on land". That is a good description (food and drinks are 100% included). However a cruise room is never this big and comfortable. Restaurants are no where as good as El Cid's restaurants. And I found the staff / guest relations much better at El Cid then any cruise we have been on. If you can afford El Cid we highly recommend it! We Love the week we spent there! More

Dear Roam57311336654, We feel very honored with your comments and thank you for selecting VENTUS for your past vacation. Thank you also for appreciating our efforts to please our guests and for your compliments for all our staff. I have already shared your comments with all our team, our staff is always willing to serve to our guests with an attentive service and a sincere smile. Thank you again for your lovely comments and for your confidence. Kindest regards from all the staff of VENTUS AT MARINA EL CID!!

The resort was beautiful! The sargassum made it unpleasant to swim. We came for the beach and ocean swimming so that put a damper on our trip. We swam in the pools and traveled to beaches approximately 30 minutes away. If you mainly like pool swimming, this would be a great resort for you!

Dear nikihamlin, Your positive comments are certainly welcome and we are glad to read that you really enjoyed your stay at VENTUS AT MARINA EL CID. Thank you also for taking the time to share your experience with us, all our beach staff do his best to keep our beach area in the best condition possible for the enjoyment of all of our guests. We hope to serve you again in the near future and thank you again for your confidence and for preferring El Cid Resorts. Kind regards amigos!!

We were extremely pleased with our stay at the Ventus at Marina El CID. Everything exceeded our expectations from our Concierge Patricia, to our Butler’s Manny and Keke. Our suite was gorgeous and was kept fresh every day. The food was great, the spa and romantic dinner on the beach was a dream. We were there for 7 days celebrating our sons HS graduation and our 16 year wedding Anniversary. We will definitely be back again.

Dear Marquita P, What an honor to read your comments and we are glad to know that you had an amazing family stay in our resort. Thank you also for recognizing the service from our staff, in our resort our staff makes the difference. We look forward to seeing you again soon and thank you again for your comments and for preferring our resort. Best regards from all the staff of VENTUS AT MARINA EL CID!!

Check in process was a big mess and waited hours for room because they were waiting for it to get clean. Was given a wrong room there were people in the room when I opened with the keys I was given. Then given another room, third room. No respect for tourists time.

Dear sonyaramos11, Firstly, I am disappointed to learn that we did not meet your expectations. I would like to comment that we try to offer something for everyone and our staff do their best to exceed our guests expectations and we are sorry to read that in your case we could not achieve that goal. We will continue improving our resort and our service for the enjoyment of all our guests. Thank you very much for your valuable feedback and for selecting VENTUS AT MARINA EL CID and I hope that this incidents will not deter you in visiting us in the not too distant future. Best regards amigos!!

This is a lovely resort, but fell short of our expectations. Let me first say the staff was amazing … friendly, helpful, kept the resort spotless and the drinks flowing! The pools were beautiful with sparkling water and plenty of chairs. The beach area was not so great. Even when the seaweed was cleaned up (which I understand is not the resort’s fault) the water was murky and there was no sandy bottom … big rough rocks to trudge through to get into the water. What was surprising was that just 2 miles north in the town of Puerto Morelos, the beach had a sandy bottom and crystal clear water. To get there was a $40 round trip cab ride (5 people). We snorkeled just off the shore and had an amazing time. We were disappointed with the restaurant reservations system … arrived on a Monday around 4pm to find that there were NO RESERVATIONS AVAILABLE at any restaurant for our first two nights … so we had to eat at the buffet, which besides the very small sushi station that could not keep up with demand, was mediocre. Our first restaurant experience was good, nothing spectacular, but a nice change from the buffet. The restaurants were nothing special … much of the food was over cooked and appeared to have been prepared in advance. Felt very rushed. The Japanese restaurant was delicious. If you want a great resort to lounge at the pool and be close to some really nice snorkeling, then this is perfect, just don’t expect a luxury experience and fine dining.

Dear laurieinIllinois, First of all, I would like to thank you for your comments and for selecting VENTUS AT MARINA EL CID. Thank you also for your your positives and for your feedback that is always welcome and we always apply the suggestions that are in our hands and all the comments are always discussed with our executive team. We are committed to offer the best experience to all of our guests and we sincerely hope to serve you again in a near occasion. Thank you again for your comments and for your stay with us. Muchas gracias and best wishes to all!!

The property was great, all the El Cid staff were super fantastic. Except for the fact that all the pools, hot tubs and all the outside bars closed at 9:30 pm every night. Room service took too long to deliver food. The service we received at the outside bars and house cleaning and all the restaurants’ staff were super fantastic. MY concierge/ buss boy Callie was the best. Most of the interval international staff were rude and unwilling to help. I was told I would get early check in when I up graded to platinum membership. When I first reserved my vacation, I requested a resort in Cancun, not the somewhere near Cancun. It was too late when I realized it to make any changes. During my stay I talked to serval couples who also though they were booking a resort in Cancun, not 30 minutes from Cancun. Seem like someone is getting a kickback. When I paid for my reservation, I was told each room I reserved would receive two covid test for free. I was also told I would get $250.00 dollars in gift certificates per room was a lie. The day we arrived I was informed they were no longer offering the free covid test as of 5/27/2022 and we arrived on 5/28/2022. M check in experience did not feel like what a VIP experience should feel like. If I ever returned would only be because of the resort room staff, restaurant staff and all the workers. All the staff at the entrance trying to sell you should be fired. We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, so we made the best of it.

Dear 1010maryp, We certainly appreciate your excellent review and thank you for appreciating our efforts to please our guests. All our staff loves to serve to our guests in a courteous manner and with a sincere smile, I have already shared your feedback with the proper area, We look forward to serving you again in a near opportunity to offer you another breathtaking vacation. Best wishes amigos, muchos saludos!!

If you currently serve, or have served, in the U.S. armed forces and are planning a vacation, did you know that you have access to travel insurance benefits through USAA?

Founded in 1922 by a group of U.S. Army officers, USAA is a well-established Fortune 500 company with more than 13 million members as of 2020. USAA offers financial products including banking, investing and insurance to people and families who serve or have served in the U.S. military.

When you become a member of USAA (which is free if you qualify), you have access to various benefits, products and discounts, including travel insurance, which can help protect you and your nonrefundable plans if something derails your vacation. USAA’s trip insurance plans are administered by Travel Insured International , a company with over 25 years in the industry.

Here’s a look at various travel insurance options offered by USAA to help you decide if the policies are right for you.

What travel insurance plans does USAA offer?

USAA offers single-trip plans. Coverage begins when you purchase a policy and ends when you return home from your trip.

Because you have to be a member to view USAA plans, NerdWallet reached out to a USAA representative with two sample trips: a two-week trip to Italy by a 40-year-old from Hawaii ($5,000 estimated cost) and a one-week trip to Mexico by a 60-year-old from Nebraska ($3,000 estimated cost).

For both trips, we received three travel insurance plan options to choose from:

Worldwide Trip Protector, which also offers Cancel For Any Reason, or CFAR, as an optional add-on.

Worldwide Trip Protector Lite.

Travel Medical Protector.

It's important to note that travel insurance policies depend on your state of residency; your USAA travel insurance plan options may differ from above if you live in another state.

USAA travel insurance cost

The total cost for coverage typically varies based on your total trip cost and your age. Generally, USAA's Travel Medical Protector plans are more affordable than its other options. This difference in price is due to benefits and limits offered in each of the plans (more on this next).

How much does USAA travel insurance cost? Here's how it breaks down between our two sample itineraries.

Trip 1: $5,000, two-week trip to Italy by a 40-year-old from Hawaii

Trip 2: $3,000, one-week trip to mexico by a 60-year-old from nebraska.

About USAA's travel insurance benefits

Below is the list of benefits offered broken down by plan, along with the limits.

If you already have a premium travel credit card and you’re satisfied with the travel insurance limits, you may be fine with just getting the Travel Medical Protector plan. But if the limits offered on your credit card are insufficient or you don't have a credit card that provides travel insurance, the Worldwide Trip Protector Lite or Worldwide Trip Protector plans are solid options.

Worldwide Trip Protector Lite benefits

The Worldwide Trip Protector Lite plan offers basic coverage, but still provides benefits like 100% trip cancellation and 100% trip interruption , $300 trip delay, $100,000 in medical evacuation and $10,000 for medical expenses, among other benefits. The maximum trip length is 30 days.

This plan also offers some add-on options including car rental damage, Cancel For Work Reason and optional flight accident. The Cancel for Work Reason add-on would allow you to cancel a trip for a work-related reason as long as the cancellation meets the guidelines set in the policy.

Worldwide Trip Protector benefits

The Worldwide Trip Protector plan is more comprehensive, with 100% trip cancellation, 150% trip interruption, $1,500 trip delay, $1 million in medical evacuation, $100,000 for medical expenses and many other benefits. The maximum trip length is 180 days.

This plan also offers a host of add-ons to choose from including CFAR coverage, rental car damage, electronic equipment and many others.

CFAR lets you cancel a trip for any reason whatsoever and receive up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back (as long as you cancel within 48 hours before departure and you add all of your travel arrangements to your trip within 21 days of the initial payment). If you’re worried that something may derail your nonrefundable trip, CFAR is a good option to have because of its flexibility.

Optional electronic equipment provides up to $2,000 to replace your owned or leased cell phone, laptop or other equipment if it is stolen, lost or damaged while you’re vacationing.

If you want high limits and the ability to add many a la carte benefits to your travel insurance policy, the Worldwide Trip Protector Plus is the plan to go with. However, if you’re just looking for basic coverage and some add-on options, consider the Worldwide Trip Protector Lite plan.

» Learn more: Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance explained

Travel Medical Protector benefits

The Travel Medical Protector plan is designed to offer medical coverage when you’re traveling outside the U.S. The benefits are mainly focused on medical care, with $50,000 for medical expenses, $1 million for medical evacuation and repatriation, $150,000 for nonmedical evacuation, $5,000 for trip interruption and $1,000 coverage for delays.

» Learn more: Travel medical insurance: Emergency coverage while you travel internationally

If you don’t need pre-departure trip cancellation coverage and are mainly concerned about unexpected medical emergencies, this is a good plan to consider. Additionally, if you hold a premium travel card that offers trip cancellation insurance (like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ) and the limits are adequate, a standalone medical plan might be the most cost-effective option.

The Cancel For Any Reason supplement is offered only on the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, so if you’re looking for this benefit, that’s the plan you’ll want to go with.

What’s not covered by USAA travel insurance

Although travel insurance covers many events, not everything will be covered, including:

Fear of travel. Wanting to cancel a trip because circumstances have changed and you’re now scared to travel will not qualify as a covered reason. If you’d like the option to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever, you’ll need to purchase the CFAR supplement, which you can add to your Worldwide Trip Protector policy.

Specific events. General exclusions not usually covered by insurers won't be covered here either. Example events include self-harm, war, participating in dangerous activities (e.g., skydiving), committing a felony or getting into an accident while intoxicated. You’ll need to review the policy's fine print to know exactly what is and isn’t covered.

How to get a USAA travel insurance plan

If you’re currently serving or have served in the U.S. military, joining USAA could offer some money-saving benefits, including travel insurance. Since USAA travel insurance plans are available only to members, you will need to purchase a USAA membership before seeing plan options. Then log in to your member portal to see plan quotes.

If you have any questions, reach out to USAA at 800-531-8722.

Determine if your quotes are a good deal

One way to check if USAA travel insurance is the best value is to compare your USAA quotes to those listed on an insurance comparison site like Squaremouth . To see what other plan options are available, input your trip details and cross-reference the cost and coverage of those plans to what you’re seeing with USAA.

» Learn more: The best credit cards for travel insurance benefits

USAA travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, medical evacuation and repatriation, and medical expense coverage, among many other benefits. There are several plans to choose from including a plan that is focused on medical coverage when traveling outside the U.S.

You must be a USAA member to purchase a travel insurance policy from USAA. Those eligible for membership include those who serve or have served in the U.S. military along with their family members.

The Cancel For Any Reason supplement is available only on the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, which is the most comprehensive travel insurance plan offered by USAA.

Going on a trip without any travel insurance is a risky move because if something derails your trip or you experience a medical emergency, you may lose your nonrefundable deposit and incur high medical costs. Even if you’re a USAA member, it's still advisable to do a price comparison of different travel insurance options to make sure that you’re getting the most value when choosing a policy.

terrible automated system...said I didn't have a checking account...took @ 1 hour to finally get through to a person...their auto insurance can't even come close to competing with others

You are warned to stay away!

After 12yrs not another dollar of business will be done with this evil despicable company that hates and screws veterans every chance they can. After 6 months of no usage whatsoever they allowed some old company to charge my cc which had a different and number and no authorization was given. After a dispute and their 'investigation' guess what? They found me responsible! How does a company charge a card when they don't even have my card number? When you call their ultra high security makes you spend 15 minutes confirming your identity but apparently anybody you ever use their card with can charge it any time they want, zero issues. All my accounts have now been closed... any other company is better.

Incompetent Representatives

The customer service has really gone down hill. I’ve been a member for 10 years. Although I have not had an issue with the insurance side, the banking side is terrible. Too many unprofessional and incompetent representatives who don’t know anything and give zero effort in resolving your issue.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend USAA

I’ve read the reviews and I’m actually kinda blown away by the one star reviews. To each their own I guess…my experience was nothing short of amazing. Ella, the lady I was working with was super knowledgeable on everything I had questions on. I was doing a quote for bundled home owners and auto. The wife and I were shopping around due to buying a new home. We got three different estimates and they were all close in price. I told the wife I’d pay extra for the customer service. I was so impressed I scheduled again with Ella, and now I’m a happy USAA customer. I’ve called back with some questions and every time I get a pleasant person who speaks English as their first language, and is easy to understand. Hopefully everything stays this way and I don’t run into some of the issues other reviewers have.

Ridiculous experience

I called to set up an account since my Grandfather keeps telling me to. The first time i called they said i had an account already and i needed to send in my drivers license to verify and they'll call me back in a day or two. Never got a call back for a week, called them again and was told that if someone set up an account for me id have to get them on a 3 way call to verify. I then called all my family members to see if someone set up an account, no one did. I called back and was told i have no account with them and i am unfortunately not eligible. What a ridiculous experience.

USAA once had a great reputation of…

USAA once had a great reputation of serving military members and family… now they have a poor reputation of helping themselves… very scrupulous practices and the utmost poor customer service. I am going to start looking else where. Been with USAA over 15 years. It’s disappointing to see what they have become. I truly don’t know what happened to USAA… highly disappointed ☹️!!

USAA: User Service Always Abysmal

USAA went to hell in a handbasket. - Mortgage origination process: garbage - Trying to close while on deployment after everything has been executed for weeks and confirmed complete with a backup POA for your wife? Mortgage officer Ashley Sanchez will ruin it and accuse you of lying and not completing documents. - Mortgage operations: garbage, immediately sold to Dovenmuelhe, who are shockingly horrible. Why does USAA treat customers like this? - Banking experience: garbage. - Budgeting system is hot garbage, terrible user inerface. It's infuriating to use. - Want a teller check? Wait 4 business days and it can ONLY be sent to you. Super convenient! Can't believe I've been a USAA customer for half my life. These guys can pack sand. Everybody knows they're now coasting on their laurels and ruining their hard-earned legacy. Go pound sand, USAA. I detest you from the very depths of my bowels and all they contain.

Date of experience : April 14, 2024

I highly recommend NOT going with USAA…

I highly recommend NOT going with USAA with auto insurance. Huge scam. Sad part, it took me 25 years being a member with them to find out. They charge 3-5 times more than other auto insurance companies. I recently changed over to Allstate and it went from nearly $800 with USAA to $130 with Allstate. Even though I gave USAA a week notice in advance that I was swapping over to Allstate on 21 March 2024, they gave me my partial refund of $200+, but charged me $90.19 today… what a scam! Who does that?

I've been with USAA for just shy of 19…

I've been with USAA for just shy of 19 years. I do not kjownwhat happened in this past year but they have gotten terrible. Since December I've been trying to resolve an issue and have had representatives all out lie to and get combative when I point that out. Denita Baker in the member advocate with the CEOs office lying about trying to contact me was the last straw. I closed my homeowners, auto and all banking with them.

CLOSE USAA ACCOUNT AND FIND ANOTHER BANK

My experience with USAA taught me to be more careful when choosing a bank. I made credit card payment using my USAA checking. They duplicated the payment for $17,000 and refused to give me a refund until the CFPB intervene 30 days later. Worse, they lied to the CFPB saying I never requested the money. They assured me of a provisional credit within 7 to 10 days, which was not issued. Instead, they advised me to request a cash advance, promising no fees, yet fees were indeed charged. If you don't want similar experience, stay away from USAA.

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. I got rear ended and Co was absolutely terrible to deal with. Wouldn't pay for damages. Told me my pristine caddy was worthless and even said it shouldn't be on the street. Outrageous! I just finally got them to settle case after almost three years. The adjuster is a liar and actually slandered my name and defamed my character.

USAA Banking gave our money away to a total stranger without informing us!!!

USAA Banking allowed a total stranger to call them and say they were the owner of our account. This individual then gave them their name and email address, and USAA provided them a pin to access our accounts and transfer $5000 to another account at another bank. USAA admitted it was questionable when pressed about it. They NEVER informed of us and we only noticed because taxes are coming due. Even after we notified USAA, they allowed the funds to go through. So now we are out $5000 and it can take up to 90 days to (hopefully) get our money back. USAA has truly gone downhill in the decades we have been members and I strongly urge caution if you are looking at using USAA banking. Their security is pathetic at best.

I tried to log in to my USAA account…

I tried to log in to my USAA account solely to change my phone number of record. Incorrect ID or Password. Ok. So I pressed the button to reset my pw. Next they want to send me a text with a 6 digit verification code. That won't work. My phone number is different. I called the 800#, pressed 1 for English and was asked to provide my ss#. Apparently they have an incorrect ss#. Next I typed my USAA Insurance policy number (twice) correctly from my Ins card. No. That too was incorrect but I was forwarded to a live agent. I explained I just need to change my ph# and method of payment. Transferred 'Security' where I was told I COULD NOT CHANGE MY PH# UNTIL I VERIFIED MY IDENTITY AND....WAIT FOR IT...THAT MUST BE DONE ONLINE. Fine. Following instructions I landed on the website and uploaded my drivers license successfully. I had to enter the phone# of record to proceed. Message this time: someone from the Security division will contact me BY TELEPHONE within 1-3 business days. I called USAA again, explaining I need to change my ph# and method of pay asap. Since my identity is now verified, I asked to speak with a Security agent instead of waiting 1-3 days. Oh no! That is not how it works. No exceptions. This all began when the pw I used 2 weeks ago suddenly became invalid. My policy renewal set for the end of May ain't gonna happen. The coverage for my home and 3 vehicles is inexpensive. There is a reason for that. No local USAA agents - anywhere!! If I had a locally situated agent, then I coild walk in the office and be taken cate of. I regret changing my insurance to USAA. Awful experience from beginning to end.

29 year member witnessing embarrassing decline in customer service

After 29 years with USAA I can only say the customer service and customer care is falling off a cliff. I took advantage of a promotional credit card offer. I called when I thought the final balance was due but the statement was unclear. I was given a different day, a month later. I paid on that day and was charged about $400 in interest. I called to protest. They refused to refund the interest and gave an overly simply reply that did not make sense with itself. I called their fraud department. The gentleman I spoke with said I was right, he would call the credit card side for me. They refused to drop the charge. He called another help resolution line he has. Same thing. He put it forward as fraud and documented my previous phone call when I was given a due date to avoid interest. We will see where this goes but I am not inclined to deal with them anymore. This is terrible customer service. For a company that built its name on customer service this is not how you stuck around for another 100 years.

Choose another company.

I would give them zero stars if I could. Passing the bar exam was much easier than filing a personal property claim with these people. They treat you like complete scum and most of the time they find a loophole in the system and get out of having to pay out the claim that you've been paying them to have for years. They are literally crooks. They've gotten to big and powerful and therefore feel as though they no longer have any accountability to their customers. They did $33 BILLION in revenue last year. Don't you think that's enough money to pay out a small claim. You know, the entire reason that people have insurance in the first place? We have been with them for over 20 years. SHOP AROUND. DO NOT STAY WITH THEM JUST BECAUSE ITS 'comfortable'. TIMES HAVE CHANGED. Other companies off WAY better policies with better coverage for much cheaper prices. Don't stay with these jerks. The company is not and will not ever improve. Take my advice and shop around. You will be shocked what you are able to find. I just lowered our auto insurance by $400 a month. True story. I went with State Farm. They're cool, but there are also many others. It's 2024. Use technology and find other companies. Don't stay stuck in the past and let them take advantage of you just because they are associated with the United States Armed Forces and supposed to have our best interests at heart, because I can assure you they do not. They are just like any other insurance company. They care about only 1 thing and that is making money.

I have been a member for just shy of 20…

I have been a member for just shy of 20 years. USAA used to be an outstanding organization but it’s quite the opposite now. You can no longer speak to a supervisor; so when you get a young rude, inexperienced representative, or one who operates out of racial spite (and I have blatantly experienced it as a white male), you have to put up with it or find another financial institute. Its customer service is among the industry’s worst! It’s too bad that it’s all we have as vets. Lastly, due to hiring based on equity practices, I have found reverse discrimination is alive and well at USAA.

Poor User Experience All Around

To talk to a real person you have to 1. Call from your phone number on file 2. Enter your social or USAA number 3. Enter your USAA PIN 4. Receive a text and enter that password THEN.. once a live person gets on the line, they have no idea that you've gone through a deep level of authentication already so they reauthenticate you again with the following: 1. Give first and last name (fair) 2. Give PIN (again) 3. Receive a text and enter password (again) Sometimes there are even more! This is an awful user experience. And this is just to talk to someone. It's an absolute time suck and there's no merit to it. Just poorly managed software systems being implemented to the detriment of the insured. A good way to judge an insurance company is by how difficult they make it to access them. USAA is degrading and becoming inaccessible.

I'm in the military and USAA ripped me of. What do you think they will do to you. J Jewlers said it's fraudulent what there doing. They gave you all the information they neeed to process my claim but they dont want to do it. I'm transferring/ closing all accounts in a couple days. Transferring out all my auto insurance to another company and suing you. And social media and everyone I know is going to know how USAA gave me $7 to repair a $25000 dollar ring. Thank you for serving my a. FRAUD

Customer service sucks, charged $200 fee.

I changed my phone number and this left to discovering USAA is the worst insurance company. I needed to update my payment card and the website wouldn't let me log in, or verify my identity. Web support and customer service couldn't fix it so my bill couldn't be paid without mailing in copies of identification. Couldn't cancel my account. My account was then canceled and they charged me a fee over $200. I switched to state farm and they're much better. USAA is nothing but a scam now.

Just Another Lowlife Insurance Company

I have been a USAA member for about 50 years now. Gradually I have watched them become just another lowlife insurance company over the years. Half a century ago, they were a company for military officers and their dependents. In an effort to become larger and larger, they have now pretty much gone to anyone who can spell the word 'military'. My last two experiences with an automobile accident and a homeowners policy claim have indicated clearly to me that they are most concerned with collecting premium. I find them dishonest and disingenuous. So I will be switching my homeowners, automobile, and credit card business elsewhere. Do not believe their advertising claims of being "for the military". In common parlance, this is just another lie.

USAA Eagle Navigator Credit Card review: Solid rewards for military and their family members

Ryan Wilcox

USAA Eagle Navigator Credit Card overview

The USAA Eagle Navigator™ Credit Card is a solid card option for current and former military members and their spouses and dependents. The card has reasonable earning rates and some perks to help justify its price tag, making it a smart choice for military members looking for easy points on their travel spending. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐

* Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

With a recommended credit score of 670 and a low $95 annual fee (see rates and fees ), the USAA Eagle Navigator can offer decent value for military members and their families. That's the case even though the card has somewhat limited benefits.

However, if you're not a USAA member (and are ineligible to become one), this card isn't for you, as it's only open to current and past military plus their spouses and children.

Keep reading to learn more about the USAA Eagle Navigator to see if it deserves a spot in your wallet.

USAA Eagle Navigator Welcome Offer

The USAA Eagle Navigator does currently offer 30,000 bonus points ($300 travel value) after spending $3,000 on qualifying purchases within 90 days of account opening.

USAA Eagle Navigator benefits

The USAA Eagle Navigator offers solid travel and shopping protections , such as travel accident insurance and extended warranty protection on U.S. manufacturers' warranties; plus, it does not charge foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees ). You'll also get cellphone protection of up to $500 per claim if you charge your monthly bill to the card and a phone on the account is damaged or stolen. Finally, you'll enjoy trip cancellation and interruption coverage along with baggage delay reimbursement when you purchase your tickets with the card.

Other benefits include an up-to-$100 TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry® credit every four years as well as an annual bonus of 10,000 points (equal to $100 in travel) after booking an eligible hotel or car through the USAA Rewards Center.

These perks won't blow anyone away, but they do more than justify the card's price tag, making it a solid value proposition. However, remember that hotels and rental cars booked through third-party platforms rather than directly with the merchant generally aren't eligible for elite status perks, nor will they earn rewards in the provider's own program.

Earning cash back on the USAA Eagle Navigator

The USAA Eagle Navigator offers unlimited 3 points per dollar on travel, including air, hotel, car and vacation rentals. You'll also get an unlimited 2 points per dollar on other purchases.

usaa member travel privileges review

If you're a current or former military member or a family member of someone who serves, those are more than serviceable rates; they can serve as a nice starter in the world of cash-back cards, especially since the base earning rate is 2 points per dollar. While that certainly makes this easier, it can impact your ability to enjoy higher rewards for certain purchases — which is common on mid-tier cards like this.

Redeeming cash back on The USAA Eagle Navigator

The USAA Eagle Navigator is effectively a cash-back credit card , though the points you earn on the USAA Eagle Navigator card can be redeemed for a variety of items. This includes travel through the USAA Rewards Center, merchandise, gift cards, statement credits or even direct deposits into a USAA checking or savings account.

The exact redemption value can vary, but your best bet is likely a travel redemption, as 10,000 points equals $100 toward a travel purchase when used in this way. However, opting for a cash-back redemption option can lower your redemption value significantly.

That said, points earned with the USAA Eagle Navigator don't expire, so you can redeem them on your own time. Just be sure to crunch the numbers to ensure you're getting the most value for your points.

Which cards compete with the USAA Eagle Navigator?

There are a handful of other simplified travel cards on the market that compete with the USAA Eagle Navigator :

  • If you want better earning rates: The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is one of the best travel cards on the market, earning 5 points per dollar on travel booked through the Chase travel portal and Lyft purchases, 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services and online grocery store purchases (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs) and more. That's all for a $95 annual fee. For more information, read our full review of the Sapphire Preferred.
  • If you want transfer partners : The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has valuable earnings rates and 15+ valuable airline and hotel transfer partners. The modest $95 annual fee (see rates and fees ) and solid return on everyday spending (at least 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases) make this card much more flexible than the USAA Eagle Navigator. For more information, read our full review of the Venture Rewards .

Is the USAA Eagle Navigator worth it?

For military members — including current and former personnel, as well as their spouses and dependents — the USAA Eagle Navigator can be a solid choice for starter travel rewards. Its flexible earnings rates and benefits can justify its annual fee.

However, there is a limit to the value you can get from the card, and if you'd prefer the ability to transfer points to partner programs or want a larger sign-up bonus, go with another option.

Bottom line

The straightforward perks of the USAA Eagle Navigator make it a decent choice for military members and their families who want to earn easy cash back on purchases. However, it's only available to USAA members, which is limited to current and former military plus their spouses and dependents. Since there are many other similar cards out there that don't have this restriction, you may want to go with one of them.
