What Compostela has to offer? More than what meets the eye

compostela

Unknown to many, Compostela is a destination loaded with rich culture and tradition. Don’t you think it’s time to pay this lovely town and visit?

CEBU CITY, Philippines — As the biggest Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo event kicked off today, January 23, delegates found themselves immersed in the rich cultural fabric of three towns in Northern Cebu, among them the vibrant municipality of Compostela.

A third-class municipality, Compostela is home to more than 50,000 residents.

With its lush landscapes and verdant scenery, the town welcomed arriving delegates with open arms, treating them to a feast of Filipino delicacies that included the irresistible puto maya, sikwate, and the renowned queseo – a local delicacy that has become synonymous with the town.

A highlight of the Compostela stop was the performance by the Compostela Performing Arts, showcasing the Queseo Festival.

The rhythmic display added a touch of local culture to the Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo experience, offering delegates a glimpse into the town’s rich but mostly undiscovered culture and tradition.

Compostela Valley: Where Beautiful Caves Captivate You

Compostela Valley: Where Beautiful Caves Captivate You

Compostela Valley, an expanse that was once part of Davao del Norte, is a fascinating province that abounds with alluring landscapes and varying mountainous terrains. Tucked in the southeastern part of Mindanao, this place is not only home of the country’s gold mining industry but also of some of the Philippines’ most striking caves that the adventurous ones continue to visit and admire.

What are the wonderful attractions in Compostela Valley?

Because of its popularity with caverns, Compostela Valley has initiated the annual Cave Eco-Adventure which happens from November 1 to November 3. This three-day activity includes exploration of four of the magnificent caves in the province. Imagine going through tight spaces, crawling through mystifying passages, walking on wet cave floors, rappelling through cascading waterfalls, dodging from bats and other peculiar creatures, and getting amazed with natural formations of stalagmites and stalactites waiting to be revealed inside claustrophobic, underground wonders.

Where to start?

sanvicente

The potholing is usually based in Barangay San Vicente in the Municipality of Nabunturan. You will be taken to the first cave which immediately brings you to a 60-feet drop entrance, a truly exciting start for adventure seekers. This cave is called the sinking cave and those who enter it are required to take extra caution to avoid any mishap. The next cave is a visually appealing one, letting your eyes feast on stalactites that look like edible popcorn. Who wouldn’t be amazed with such natural beauty?

The third cave, on the other hand, offers a 30-foot descent that adrenaline-hungry spelunkers will surely be happy about. Take note, however, that this space is known to be filled with guano , the collected dung of cave bats so do not wonder if you end up getting brown and dirty once you get out of the cave.

Lastly, the fourth cave will welcome you with a beautiful limestone formation and its two pools of water. Keep a watchful eye when in any of the pools for you might encounter fresh water fish and even crabs who have found a home in the underground water pond.

Travelling while learning

Aside from the adrenaline-rushing spelunking activities being offered, the Cave Eco-Adventure also aims to educate the attendees with cave preservation. The organizers have included some seminars and talks that promote interest and protection of the caves and their natural contents. In these settings, those interested in speleology will have the chance to expand their knowledge on the science, study, and exploration of Philippine caverns. Of course, fellowship among the participants is also expected, making the circle of the country’s cavers wider, allowing more connections among spelunking enthusiasts.

What else is there in Compostela Valley?

Malumagpak

If you have extra days at your hands, you can further explore Compostela Valley and discover more of what it has to offer. You can choose to explore the mountains and waterfalls that abound. If you want to descend from the highlands and go coastal, why not visit the islands of Kopiat and Lunod? The former is known for its fine, white sands and rich underwater life while the latter is popular as an eco-tourism park. Lunod Island also becomes magical at night as the entire place is illuminated with thousands of fireflies.

Exciting adventure awaits you!

There are many other activities that you can enjoy when you go this new province in southeastern Mindanao. Being a budding tourism destination, you can expect pristine and unspoiled attractions that only a few of the tourists have discovered yet. So if you want to be one of the first to enjoy the beauty of Compostela Valley, board an airplane from Manila, Cebu, or other major cities and fly to Davao International Airport. Once you land, take a two-hour bus ride to the town of Nabunturan and get your adventure face on. See you there!

Children would surely enjoy the swimming with two slides, which is available from early morning until late – around 10 pm. The property’s facilities prove that it is convenient and friendly to family guests with children as well as adult groups. What is more is that the resort is fortunately located by the seaside. It means that you get both advantages – fresh sea breeze and spacious resort. However, resort guests seem to be enjoying more the swimming pool than the beach itself. For those who stay until late in the afternoon can experience the spectacular sunset. Selfies and groupies, by the way, is usually done with the sea as their background view – fantastic!

All right… it will help if we talk a bit about the resort’s basic facilities and amenities being offered. Here are some of the main ones…

great activities, facilities & services

Swimming Pool This pool is wide and has two water slides which are very entertaining mostly by children. But, of course, many adults also do! In the middle of the pool, you can find a shade structure built on top of an ‘island’ which is connected with two overarching bridges. You can swim through or under that bridge. By the poolsides, you can find shades and huge parasols where you can freely take cover from direct sunlight and enjoy your snacks and other day’s provisions. Playground for children Your children, or even adults, can run around the spacious resort and can play all sorts of games they want to play. Beach Shades/Cottages These are the pyramid-shaped shades close to the beach where guests can enjoy their food, drinks, chats, rests, or anything. From these shades, you can enjoy watching or observing the vast ocean and the blue skies (if sunny!). Basic Sea Activities includes... Banana Boats, Boating, Island Hopping, etc.

You will be amazed that Green Lagoon Park, although a budget and sort of ‘peoples’ resort,’ has almost everything you could ask for in a resort. Check out its facilities… A Clinic That’s right! Green Lagoon Park has a small clinic and an ambulance too in case of accidents or any emergencies that need a prompt medical response. However, please, take care of yourself while having. Also, please watch your little ones! Foodshop This is where you can purchase not only foodstuff but also souvenirs for your friends or family members. Products are the usual locally-made stuff with some marks about the resort, among other stuff to remind you about the place. Green Lagoon Pizza Wow, this is fantastic! If you are quick enough, you can order and have your pizza. That’s because everybody is buying it and he or she could run out of supply quickly. Conference Room You can have some formal event that you can do in this resort: meetings, business gathering, or any, and then enjoy the beach and other facilities after your business. Bread Shop You don’t need to bring with you everything that you want to eat from outside since Green Lagoon has its bakery. They sell some choices of bread, cakes, and some pastries you can enjoy with. Volleyball Court This is a great place to enjoy a beach volleyball although you won’t see ( I guess) women playing this one here! Most beach volleyball game is being played by men in the Philippines, unlike the popular beach volleyball in other countries.

Of course, the resort has a spacious parking area for your private vehicle.

Compostela is a 4th class municipality situated in the northeastern coast of the province of Cebu and is about 25 kilometers from Cebu City . It is a part of a metropolitan area informally known as Metro Cebu. Compostela is not to be confused with  Compostela Valley Province  located in  Mindanao .

The coastal town of Compostela, with its 4.6 kilometers of sandy beaches, has its resorts for tourist attractions. Probably the most popular is the Stakili Beach and Garden Resort located at Barangay Estaca. The resort sits beside the serene sea and has a sweeping view of towering palms and tropical greens. Visitors can take advantage of its accommodations with facilities and services suitable for both leisure and business needs. Stakili Beach and Garden Resort also offers facilities for recreational activities such as swimming pool with slide, kiddie pool, videoke, volleyball and basketball.

Aside from its beaches, another interesting destination in Compostela is a 200-hectare complex known as Q Park . The place boasts of its Stations of the Cross and a 37-feet statue of the Virgin Mary. It also has a Boy’s Camp, a Girl’s Camp, a Nativity Cave, a rest area, and a Heroes’ Hill. Still a work in progress, Q Park is open to the public for free. It is the intention of the owners to offer Q Park to the public as a place of pilgrimage and of fruitful reflection.

The Caballo Festival of Compostela is a street dancing competition that honors the town’s patron saint, Senor Santiago de Apostol. Originating from Compostela, Spain, religion plays an important role to its concept. History retells of a war between Christians and Muslims where the townsfolk saw and was saved by a miraculous apparition of a man riding a horse who later became known as the town’s patron saint. The festival is celebrated every 25 th of November.
