Butcher Holler

Butcher Holler, Kentucky is Hallowed Ground Every Country Fan Should Visit at Least Once

The coal mining town of Butcher Holler (or Butcher Hollow), Kentucky, is the birthplace of country music legend Loretta Lynn . Her home and the town in general not only got some love throughout her music career but became a tourist attraction that you can visit today. It's a must-see for any country fan to see Lynn's humble beginnings before she became one of the greatest voices in the history of country music.

The home is located in Johnson County, which Lynn honored in her timeless hit, "Coal Miner's Daughter." Her song also mentions the larger town of Van Lear, where Butcher Holler is located. The country singer was the eldest daughter and second born to her mother and coal miner father, Clary and Ted Webb. Now, the "holler" is what remains of the formerly thriving coal mining community.

Loretta Webb and her seven siblings lived in their "cabin on a hill" off their father's coal mining salary, but he did his best to ensure everyone felt loved and had food on the table. Loretta left home at 15 when she got married and went on to become a massive star. Her sister Crystal Gayle also found success as a country music singer, making their childhood home in the tiny town in Kentucky a tourist destination for longtime fans.

If you find yourself in Eastern Kentucky and want to stop into Loretta Lynn's home, then you'll need to also stop at Webb's Grocery in Van Lear. The 100-year-old store was owned and maintained by Lynn's brother Herman Webb until his death in 2018. Initially an old coal mining camp store, you'll be able to bring home some keepsakes and snacks. The actual home has guided tours that are only $5, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day of the week, with no reservations required. Lynn's brother Herman even gave the tours himself, with other family members stepping in when he's unavailable. He undoubtedly had numerous stories about his famous sisters growing up singing on the front porch, having no idea what the future held.

The inside of the home also contains numerous original family items ranging from their mother's washboard, bed, and more. The fee for the tour has remained $5 for years, keeping true to the family's humble beginnings. This isn't a flashy tourist attraction like Graceland, but that's part of the charm Butcher Holler has to offer fans of the late, great Loretta Lynn.

Let’s Take a Virtual Tour to Butcher Hollar Kentucky and Visit Loretta Lynn’s Birthplace

If you've got about five minutes, let's take a trip back in time to Butcher Hollar, Kentucky, near the little town of Van Lear, and visit the childhood home of Loretta Lynn. A couple of Yankee friends of mine with their camera rolling made the short drive out of my Johnson County home town of Paintsville, a few miles down to Hagar Hill, through West Van Lear and Van Lear, and along the beautiful Miller's Creek Drive (an awesome drive through the Appalachian foothills) to Butcher Hollar.

If you saw the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" or heard the song by Loretta Lynn, you already know that's where Loretta, Crystal Gayle and all the rest of the Webb clan spent their childhood.

Over the years most of Loretta's family made their way out of Butcher Hollar, like so many other folks in that area do. However, one fellow that stayed was Loretta's younger brother Herman Webb. For many years he ran the old coal camp company store down at the mouth of Butcher Hollar; and for $5.00 he would meet you a short distance up the hollar and give you a guided tour of the old original country home where he and Loretta grew up. Herman was 83 when he died a couple of years ago; but let's go back to when he was still giving tours. Herman was such a laid back fellow, it's hard to believe he had such world famous siblings.

The four minute video starts with the turn off on Miller Creek Road...

COVID 19 has kept the family from giving tours but when the pandemic is over, you may want to take a drive to Johnson County and visit Van Lear and Butcher Hollar. Except for strip mines, not too much coal comes out of the Van Lear coal camp anymore. But you can still visit the old company store and grab a sandwich, a moon pie and RC. Someone will be available to take you up to the family home and show you around.

If you saw the 1980  Emmy award winning movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" you saw scenes portrayed in the house but those scenes were not filmed in Butcher Hollar. If you watched the video above, you will see why. The road up Miller's Creek to the house is very narrow making it difficult to get the trucks carrying movie equipment to the Webb home. The movie producers also wanted to cut a road up the hill that the house is located on so their cameras and other equipment could be moved close. The Webb family didn't like that idea so all of the scenes involving Loretta's home were filmed at a replica house the movie company constructed near Whitesburg. That replica of Lynn’s Butcher Hollow homeplace, built at Bottom Fork, has since been burned by arsonists. Except for a Van Lear train scene, the rest of the film was made in the Whitesburg-Wise Virginia area.

The admission to Loretta's homeplace is still just $5.00 and you can take all the photos you want.

You might also want to visit the wonderful coal museum in Van Lear. It's well worth your time.

Loretta Lynn Homeplace tours continue in Butcher Hollow

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Tours at country music legend Loretta Lynn’s homeplace are back open after being closed last year due to the pandemic.

”My favorite thing was that her niece gave the tour,” said Dan Zoeller from Louisville. “So, she had a lot of insight into the family and she could tell some stories.”

Fans were eager to return to the Butcher Holler after tours were put on hold for more than a year.

“People coming in from out of state, we did not want to increase the chances of spreading COVID down here,” said Loretta’s niece Hermalee Hale.

Tours reopened in early July, but before they could reopen, they had to clean up a tree that fell from an ice storm earlier this year. Hale said it almost hit the outhouse. The weather also caused ruts in the driveway.

“We had people coming up here anyway, you know, climbing the hill past the gates and stuff,” said Hale. “Just to come to the house.”

Fans can now step inside to see the life of Lynn told by pictures and artifacts left behind.

“When she [Loretta] would come back here to visit, I mean she would come back here to just sit on the front porch,” added Hale. “They see how peaceful it is.”

“A big sense of history and take yourself back to what it would have been like to live there,” said Zoeller. “I was amazed it was so well preserved.”

Tours are offered seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Here, fans can tour the cabin that Loretta Lynn was raised in, and where her sister, singer Crystal Gayle, spent the first few years of her life. Original furnishings remain in the house and some of Lynn's family members provide tours of the cabin, sharing personal stories of the country music icon. Lynn's childhood in Butcher Holler, growing up with her coal miner father and hard-working mother, inspired her most famous song, "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Backstory and Context

Butcher Hollow (or Holler) is what remains of a once thriving coal mining community in Johnson County, located in Eastern Kentucky. It is most known for being the childhood home of country music icon Loretta Lynn, and the birthplace of her sister Crystal Gayle. Loretta Lynn's most memorable song "Coal Miner's Daughter" is about her childhood in Butcher Holler, where she grew up poor but in a large family full of love. Her father, Melvyn "Ted" Webb, worked for the Consolidation Coal Company in Van Lear. Ted and his wife Clara Ramey Webb raised eight children in their small cabin in Butcher Holler, including Loretta, who was the second child and oldest daughter. The youngest child in the Webb family, Brenda (later to become Crystal Gayle), was born in Paintsville, but the family moved to Indiana when she was 4. As a child, Loretta loved singing in church and to her young siblings on the front porch swing, but her happy childhood came to an end when she married Oliver (Mooney) V. Lynn, Jr. at the age of 15. Soon after, Loretta and Mooney relocated to Washington state, where she had four children in quick succession. Mooney noticed a unique talent in Loretta when she sang their children to sleep at night, and in the late 1950s, the struggling housewife began performing in local venues. Her career took off in 1960 when her song "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl" became a hit. The Lynn family then moved to Tennessee and Loretta signed a contract with Decca Records.

Loretta Lynn has contributed much more to the country music industry than just providing good songs. She ushered in a new image for female artists by writing about the struggles of women, covering topics from cheating husbands to birth control pills. In 1970 Loretta released her most well-known song "Coal Miner's Daughter," inspired by her early life in that cabin in Butcher Holler. The song instantly hit Number 1, and Lynn later released a bestselling book by the same title. In 1980, the movie Coal Miner's Daughter starring Sissy Spacek was released, earning Spacek an Oscar. Loretta's youngest sister Crystal Gayle also went on to have a successful career in the music industry, releasing hits such as "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" and "Talking In Your Sleep."

Loretta Lynn's HomePlace in Butcher Holler is now seen as a beacon in Van Lear. Fans of Loretta and her sister Crystal travel from all over the world to make the trek up to Butcher Holler to experience for themselves the place that inspired Lynn's hit song. For more than 30 years, Loretta's younger brother Herman Webb provided tours of the cabin, regaling visitors with stories about his parents and growing up with Loretta and Crystal. Since his death, his children and grandchildren have continued providing tours, still relaying the same stories. Inside the cabin, visitors will see tons of Loretta Lynn memorabilia, original pieces of furniture, and the washboard Loretta's mother Clara would use to wash clothes on. After a tour, visitors can stop off at Webb's General Store, once a coal mining camp store. Loretta Lynn returned to Butcher Holler in 2015, where she was photographed for the cover of her 2016 album, "Full Circle."Loretta Lynn's HomePlace is a must-see for any fan of country music and the "coal miner's daughter."

Tour Loretta Lynn’s Childhood Home

It was rustic to say the least.

Rose Heichelbech

Loretta Lynn recently passed away at the age of 90. She will forever be remembered for her iconic and charged songs, like “Fist City”, “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)”, and “Don’t Come Home a’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)”. But, one of her most famous songs, which was also a book and a movie, was “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. This song tells of her humble upbringing in a cabin during the Great Depression, with her father’s meager wages from coal mining barely seeing the family through.

Instead of being paid an hourly wage or a yearly salary, he was only paid 25 cents for each ton of coal he shoveled by hand. Like other miners in the area he was paid in scrip instead of money, which could only be used to buy things from stores the coal company owned and operated. But, she said they had lots of love to go around and that her mother was understanding and didn’t complain about the hardships they went through as a family.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home exterior

The house where she grew up in Butcher Hollow near Van Lear, Kentucky is still standing and the inside has been made into a museum called the Loretta Lynn Homeplace that you can wander through.

She was born in 1932 to Clara (“Clary”) and Theodore (“Ted”) Webb. The house where the family settled is built into a hill on a peaceful plot of land that’s both wooded and secluded. The only way up to the house in those days was a footpath as no one in the immediate area even had an automobile. In the book Coal Miner’s Daughter Lynn wrote that their first home had been very small and shoddy. She wrote that when the new home “had four rooms instead of one…we really thought we’d arrived.”

Some of the tours are given by one of Loretta Lynn’s nieces which means that there’s lot of family lore and little details sprinkled throughout the tour.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home exterior

When Lynn used to come back to visit the cabin she would often sit and look out over the countryside from the front porch swing.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

Inside the house much of the furniture pieces are ones that Lynn and her siblings grew up using. The big radio is where they listened to particular radio programs. But, they had to be selective since it ran on battery power as the area didn’t yet have electricity. So, they only listened to their very favorite shows.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

The bed is covered in mementos and artifacts, including a family guitar that many of the 8 Webb children learned to play on. There are two beds on display downstairs and two bedrooms in the tiny upstairs area, the latter of which are not on display to the public.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

In the kitchen are some moonshining items on display. There’s also a metal lunch bucket and miner’s hat with light very much like the ones Ted Webb would have taken with him to work each day. The original hat he wore is in the collection at the Loretta Lynn Ranch museum in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Loretta Lynn Childhood Home interior

Near the kitchen in this small house the family’s original pie safe and Hoosier cabinet still stand. It wasn’t until around the time that Lynn was herself married in the late 1940s that the holler got electricity and life became a little easier for the family.

You can see much more of the house, including some of the family’s photos, in the video tour below from the YouTube channel, Yankee in the South.

Latest News: Tyler Childers Gears Up for North American Tour

The “In Your Love” singer announced in September 2023 he and his band, the Food Stamps, would embark on the tour meant to promote his Rustin’ In The Rain album. Childers added 23 dates across the United States and Canada that October.

Lucky for him, the singer isn’t slated to perform on April 7. That’s the night of the 2024 CMT Music Awards, where Childers is a first-time nominee. He’s competing for Video of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year for “In Your Love.”

Quick Facts

Where is tyler childers from, musical beginnings, albums and songs: “in your love,” “all your’n,” and long violent history, wife and son, who is tyler childers.

Country - folk musician Tyler Childers has received seven Grammy nominations during his career, including Best Folk Album for 2020’s Long Violent History and Best Country Album for 2023’s Rustin’ In The Rain . Born in the country music hotbed of Eastern Kentucky, Childers first gained renown with his second studio album Purgatory in 2017. He has released six studio albums to date and is known for incorporating social issue commentary into his songs, as with “Long Violent History” and “In Your Love.”

FULL NAME: Timothy Tyler Childers BORN: June 21, 1991 BIRTHPLACE: Lawrence County, Kentucky SPOUSE: Senora May (2015-present) CHILDREN: 1 son ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Cancer

Timothy Tyler Childers, known professionally as Tyler Childers, was born on June 21, 1991, and raised in Lawrence County, Kentucky, near the West Virginia border. His father worked in the coal industry, and his mother was a nurse.

Country music heavily influenced the area where Childers grew up. Nearby Route 23, about 20 minutes away, is known as Kentucky’s Country Music Highway, with artists like Dwight Yoakam, Loretta Lynn , and Chris Stapleton once calling the region home. Childers would eventually add his name to the list of local greats, but his path there wasn’t always easy.

The singer was born with clubfoot, a congenital disorder that caused both of his feet to twist out of shape. He underwent surgeries to correct the condition at 8 months and 5 years old—once spending an entire year in a wheelchair—and had to relearn how to walk. He also attended regular checkups at Shriners Children’s hospital in Lexington until he was 18.

Childers has described himself as a “very sensitive child.” He told The Bitter Southerner that although he was raised with his sister and surrounded by family and cousins, he often felt isolated. He was active in his church group but said the fire-and-brimstone teachings he received caused him emotional stress. “I don’t think my mom and dad… went, ‘We’re going to take him [to church] on Sundays and Wednesdays and scare him to death,’ but that’s what it did,” he said .

Especially during his physical recovery, Childers found comfort in books and initially aspired to be a writer. He was drawn to Jack Kerouac works, in particular, as a teenager.

From an early age, Childers also took an interest in music. He sang for his Free Will Baptist Church congregation, learned to play chords on a guitar from his grandfather, and began writing songs when he was around 13. His favorite genres included classic rock , which his father often listened to, and country , including artists like Hank Williams Jr. , Ricky Skaggs, and Alabama.

When he was 15, Childers transferred to Paintsville High School and often played his guitar at lunch to feel more comfortable. His classmates soon invited him to sing at parties and began introducing him to other forms of music. Childers graduated in 2009 and briefly studied at Western Kentucky University and Bluegrass Community & Technical College but ultimately dropped out of school to take odd jobs and fund his music dreams.

Childers began writing his own music and released his first album when he was 19. He built a minor following in Kentucky and West Virginia with his band, the Food Stamps, and caught the attention of Miles Miller, a drummer for Sturgill Simpson. The connection proved to be crucial for the next step in Childers’ career.

Simpson served as a co-producer for Childers’ second album Purgatory , released in August 2017. The singer achieved his first mainstream success, as the record debuted at No. 1 on the Heatseekers Albums chart—highlighting new and emerging artists—and No. 2 on the Americana/Folk Albums chart. It stayed on the latter for 261 weeks. As a result, Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards.

Country Squire and “All Your’n”

Childers charted even higher in 2019 with Country Squire , his major label debut with RCA. Anchored by the country-soul ballad “All Your’n,” the project went to No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. The song also nabbed the singer his first Grammy nomination, for Best Country Solo Performance in 2020.

Long Violent History

Despite country’s track record of love songs and party anthems, Childers showed a willingness to challenge listeners by addressing key social and political issues in his next projects. Upon the release of his 2020 album, Long Violent History , and its titular track that addresses racism and police brutality in its lyrics, Childers recorded an accompanying YouTube message . He asked Appalachia natives like himself to empathize with the Black community in the wake of nationwide protests sparked by the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others.

“What can the rest of us who feel seemingly outside of these issues do?” he said. “We can stop being so taken aback by Black Lives Matter . If we didn’t need to be reminded, there would be justice for Breonna Taylor, a Kentuckian like me, and countless others.”

Long Violent History was nominated for Best Folk Album at the next Grammy Awards. Similarly, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? (2022) confronted religious intolerance through its faith-based songs two years later.

“In Your Love”

Even more recently, Childers showed support for the LGBTQ community with the 2023 song “In Your Love,” which tells the story of a romance between two male coal miners from Appalachia. The music video for the track featured actors Colton Haynes and James Scully, who both identify as gay.

Childers told NPR he wrote the song to honor a gay cousin who was like a big brother to the singer growing up and who taught him a lot about music. “For all the ugliness that it’s going to bring out that just can’t be helped, this video is going to make real conversations possible,” Childers explained. “This is a story of two people sharing their love and living a life together and experiencing loss. That’s pretty powerful. Once you take away the flash card phrases and like the knee-jerk reactions, how does that make you feel?”

“In Your Love” was nominated for three Grammys—Best Country Song, Best Music Video, and Best Country Solo Performance—in 2024, and Childers earned additional nods for Best Country Album for Rustin’ In The Rain (2023) and Best Americana Performance for “Help Me Make It Through the Night.”

While living and working on a Kentucky farm in 2013, Childers met Senora May, a recent college graduate who was cleaning houses in the area to make extra money. Their relationship quickly blossomed, and the couple married in July 2015.

Like Childers, May is a musician; she has released two albums, Lainheart in 2018 and All of My Love in 2021. The couple also started a charity together. In 2020, they founded the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund, which raises money for causes such as education, civil rights, and addiction recovery.

Childers has credited May for supporting him as he tried to build his singing career. According to People , they moved in with Childers’ family following their wedding to save enough money to purchase property for a home. Once they were able to do so, the couple lived in a camper van as they built their house.

“For a good chunk of it, Senora May’s put up with me and been there for it,” Childers wrote on his website . “And she stuck with me, so it’s really awesome because we told ourselves that if we made these sacrifices, or held off just a little longer and kept at this, maybe one day it might work out.”

In July 2022, May announced on Instagram she was expecting their first child. The following May, the pair similarly announced the arrival of their son on social media. Childers and May haven’t revealed his name publicly.

Now sober, Childers has struggled with addiction to drugs and alcohol in the past. He told The Bitter Southerner in September 2023 that he reached his low point shortly before the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when he returned home after weeks of hard partying on tour and could barely function.

“All you can do is just nurse a hangover, and Senora doesn’t even want to be around you… and rightly so,” he said . “If I would continue to drink—especially in the way that I was—she wouldn’t have stayed with me. She shouldn’t have stayed with me. I’m extremely blessed that she had the patience… to put up with my s— as long as she did.”

The singer revealed in September 2020 he had stopped drinking and using drugs six months prior, and he has remained sober since.

dolly parton broadway musical hello

Not to be confused with “Hello Dolly,” there’s a musical earmarked for Broadway by the name of “Hello, I’m Dolly,” with country-pop superstar Dolly Parton spearheading the effort to bring a show based on her life and career to the stage. But don’t get set on saying hello too soon — it’s being aimed at a 2026 opening.

Parton’s score for the show is being described as a mixture of newly written songs and “all your favorites.” The singer is co-writing the book for the autobiographical production with Maria S. Schlatter, who previously co-wrote the 2020 Netflix movie “Christmas on the Square” with Parton.

Related Stories

The state of generative ai in hollywood: a special report, michael b. jordan says 'we're still working' on 'i am legend 2' script and 'getting that up to par,' but he's 'really excited' to work with will smith, popular on variety.

Not surprisingly for a show this far out from its target date, casting, creative hires and a theater have yet to be announced.

Parton is no newcomer to Broadway, having previously written the score for a stage adaptation of the film “9 to 5” that opened at the Ahmanson in L.A. and earned her a Tony nomination in 2009 after making the move to New York. It was through a pre-pandemic British revival of that show that she met a key producer driving this production.

Said Speers in a statement, “I first had the pleasure of working with Dolly Parton in 2019 when she trusted us to develop a new version of her musical ‘9 to 5’ for London’s West End. I had always heard she wanted to do a musical based on her life, so when she asked if I would be interested in producing it, I was bowled over. As the world knows, Dolly is a magical blend of talent, hard work, intelligence, charm, wit and a gigantically big heart. I’m thrilled we’re going to bring her inspiring story to Broadway.”

The show is named after Parton’s 1967 debut album, “Hello, I’m Dolly” — an obvious play on the title of “Hello, Dolly!,” which became a smash upon opening on Broadway in 1964 and generated a cast album that reached No. 1 that year.

There are few precedents that make it easy to predict how a Dolly Parton musical might perform on Broadway, but it follows on the heels of other musicals based on singers’ lives, including “A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond Musical,” “MJ: The Musical,” “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” “The Cher Show,” “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” and, of course, “Jersey Boys.”

But those shows were entirely jukebox musicals and didn’t feature the introduction of new songs written by the subject of the show, nor were any of those books co-written by the show’s protagonist, as “Hello, I’m Dolly’s” will be.

Country music itself has had a mixed record on Broadway. A Loretta Lynn musical based on “Coal Miner’s Daughter” was announced in 2012 with Zooey Deschanel in the lead. Twelve years later, it has yet to materialize, although development is said to continue. More recently, the all-original country musical “Shucked” opened last year to strong reviews, if a shorter-than-hoped run; that show is set for a national tour that begins this fall and extends through an engagement at L.A.’s Pantages in summer 2025.

Country music musicals from earlier eras include 2003’s very short-lived “Urban Cowboy,” 1985’s successful “Big River” (which won country singer-songwriter Roger Miller a Tony) and 1978’s “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” which got turned into a 1982 film starring Parton.
