TIGER KINGDOM FAQ

The first Tiger Kingdom branch was founded in Ubonrachatani in the year 2000 was named Ubon Zoo. Nowadays, number of tigers will continue as the breeding program continues to become more successful. Then on the 24th March 2008 Tiger Kingdom was founded in Chiangmai as a 2nd branch of Ubon Zoo in order to earn more income for the extra space and enclosures that the tigers needed to be comfortable.

ARE ANY OF THE TIGER! HERE DRUGGED! WHY ARE THE TIGERS SO TAME !

Tigers are mainly active at night and less active during the mid-day heat. However, this pattern may vary by season and prey activity. The tigers at Tiger Kingdom are used to people and see us as one of their family. In the wild the tigers spend most of the day sleeping, they do the same here. None of the tigers at Tiger Kingdom are drugged.

WHY DON’T THE TIGERS WAKE UP WHEN YOU ARE STROKING THEM SO ROUGHLY !

Every day they get plenty of pats, hugs and tummy rubs. So much so that they have almost become desensitized by it, it’s normal to them when someone new starts rubbing or heavily patting them. The other reason that customers seldom visit the park in the early morning or late evening when the tigers actually want to be awake. Large crowds of people swarm to the park in the blistering heat of the day and expect to see a largely nocturnal animal running jumping and looking into the cameras for the perfect picture. It’s just not natural for the tiger to have so much activity at the peak times of the human day!

WHY DO YOU USE STICKS WITH THE TIGERS!

Sticks are held by trainers at all times for safety. From a very early age the cubs are taught that biting and clawing are not permitted. This has to be instilled in them every day for the rest of their lives. It is the only way it can make it possible for a human to be in the same enclosure as a man eating animal.

The use of electric shock, whips, chains, declawing, drugging and food deprivation reward are also methods that could be used on a tiger but Tiger Kingdom believes the method of “nose tapping” is the only method that reduces the harm to the tigers, and remains a successful way of preventing human and tiger injury.

If a tiger injures a human it usually calls for the animal to be put down. Without any kind of discipline it is just as much a danger to the tiger life as it is to the customer. A human may survive a tiger bite but the tiger most certainly wouldn’t! The sticks are not sharp and do not cause cuts.

As the tigers get older they learn that the stick is a warning. It is used when face to face eye contact or threatening behavior is shown by the tiger, but as they mostly sleep during the busiest parts of the day a trainer will usually bang it on the fence or something nearby to let the tiger know they are approaching and that aggressive behavior will be met with a hard knock to the nose. This technique is also used in training aggressive dog and other biting animals except that for this animal using a finger or hand is the preferred method. Not something I would suggest with tiger with its size and power!

Some institutions are strictly against training cats for any reason. But even they have their cats trained to a certain extent. When the cats’ food is brought to the den, they come to eat. They are then locked in their den while the keepers clean the enclosures. This is a perfect example of the reward training method.

If cats are to be handled, they must be trained not to play with people the same as they play with each other. If a cat struck or bit us the same as they would another cat in play, we would not last very long. They must be taught that our skin is like tissue paper compared to theirs.

DANGEROUS TO GET IN THE CAGES

The tigers at Tiger Kingdom are born into human care and we always stay near by so that they are use to people. They do not want to hunt you or to hurt you. The tigers are handled, stroked and patted every day and so that even the biggest of hands or the roughest of pats does not usually bother them. What can make them react is if you touch them so lightly you feel like a fly. Very gentle touching can feel ticklish and irritating to a sleeping tiger and so it’s best to stroke firmly to avoid being treated like a fly of mosquito.

The baby tigers are often playful and may want to play with you. They do play rough though and so could bite when they are playing.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE ADULT TIGERS WHEN THEY LEAVE TIGER KINGDOM

Tiger Kingdom is a partner of Ubon zoo and the animals that are bred here sometimes go there or to others zoos. For the most part though, a majority will stay here for life. Tiger kingdom was founded primarily for the preservation of the endangered Indo-Chineses species of tiger and to earn more income for their upkeep in both tiger Kingdom and Ubon Zoo.

Why do the trainers / photographers wake the tigers uo from their sleep to have pictures taken?

Because without customers the tigers would starve.

What the customer wants they usually get! It’s the same story in every business in every country! If all the customers wanted to do was to stand/sit next to a tiger while it was sleeping peacefully then it would make for a less tired tiger and probably a happier keeper too, but for the most part customers will not settle for just a touch. Provided it is safe to do so the trainers will try and position the tiger so that the face can be seen and the customer can sit comfortably in shot.

Customers are important to the tiger’s lives. No government funding is provided and they rely on the income from the encounters to feed and pay for vets bills ect. Customers want to show their friends and family’s wonderful pictures of them enjoying the intimacy of a one by one with a powerful and majestic animal. It is determined by the majority that dictates the need for the tigers to be woken so many times when they are trying to sleep. If you are happy to be passive and do not want these types of photos then please say so.

Visit Tiger Kingdom for an incredible opportunity to view and enjoy wild animals.

Come for a unique dining experience, watching Tigers while enjoying Thai and international cuisine at great prices.

Things You Should Know Before Going to Phuket Tiger Kingdom

Given below are a few things that you should keep in mind when visiting here.

  • Read the book of rules that are provided at the entrance and abide by all the rules as you enjoy here.
  • Sanitize your hands before entering the enclosure where the Tigers are kept. This is important to safeguard the wild cats from any infections.
  • While clicking pictures with the wild cat, avoid using flash as the tigers may find it disturbing.
  • A pro tip is to carry your own camera or phone to avoid paying additional charges to professional photographers.
  • You are not allowed to touch a tiger on its head as they may perceive it as a threat and attack you.
  • It is best to approach the tigers from behind, as instructed by the caretakers.
  • Carry bags are not allowed inside the property, so it is best not to carry any bags.
  • In case you are carrying a bag, leave it at the reception.
  • Redeem your voucher directly at the attraction: Tiger Kingdom, Phuket.

What is the Best Time to Visit Tiger Kingdom Phuket?

This activity at the Tiger Kingdom Phuket runs in all weather conditions. However, it is good to avoid this place during the monsoons.

The best time to visit here is 9:00 AM as the tigers are most energetic at this time. Also, it is less crowded early in the morning.

The later it gets during the day, the more lethargic and irritable you will find the tigers.

If you wish to take a good snap, try to get it done before the day closes. This is because it becomes difficult to keep the tiger still later during the day.

Can Everyone Partake in This Activity?

Due to the slightly risky nature of this activity, it is not recommended for people with impaired physical mobility or medical conditions, pregnant women, and those who are mentally unstable.

Senior citizens and children below 10 are also not allowed in the tiger enclosures. Children below 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

3 Best Places to See Wild Tigers in Thailand

Out of all the animals available in Thailand, wild tigers are definitely some of the most difficult to see. Unfortunately, they have been victims of various misfortunes in recent years as they have been killed and maimed for various reasons. Nevertheless, this does not necessarily mean that you cannot see wild tigers during your visit to the Land of Smiles.

Generally, there are some places where wild tigers are sometimes seen in Thailand. These places include Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Tiger Kingdom, and Tiger Temple. If you are lucky enough, you may be able to see at least one wild tiger in one of these places during your visit.

It should be understood that each of these 3 places has some peculiarities that make it different from the others. Furthermore, a few of these places have controversies surrounding how they breed and treat these animals. In this post, we will shed more light on these things so that you can decide where you want to see wild tigers in Thailand.

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary – Uthai Thani and Tak Provinces

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary is perhaps the biggest and most ethical place to see wild tigers in Thailand. Situated in the western forested mountains of Thailand, this sanctuary is found in Uthai Thani and Tak Provinces and covers a landmass of 1,700 km. Due to its importance to the culture of the country, it is a UNESCO-listed park that features tons of animals and plants.

According to official reports from Thai National Parks , more than 80 Indochinese tigers are living in this location. Despite the seemingly substantial population of wild tigers in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, you shouldn’t bet on seeing any one of them. In other words, there is a high possibility of not seeing any Indochinese tigers throughout your stay in this sanctuary. Even the park guards can go several weeks or months without seeing any wild tigers. But you may hear them roar while inside the park.

However, this shouldn’t stop you from visiting Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary as there are several other things to see. You can see other cat species such as clouded leopards, leopards, leopard cats, fishing cats, Asian golden cats, jungle cats, marbled cats, and civets. Without a doubt, leopards are much easier to see in this magnificent animal sanctuary than wild tigers. Deer, elephants, and so on are also available in the park.

Besides, there are more than 120 species of birds including hornbills, Burmese peacock-pheasant, and green peafowl. Additionally, you can also check out bamboo forests, grasslands, rivers, and other natural elements of Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.

When you are done with seeing wild tigers, take a trip to the visitor center to learn more about the park.

Tiger Kingdom – Chiang Mai

The Tiger Kingdom is another pleasant place where you can see tigers in Thailand. This tiger park is located in the Northern part of Thailand and requires a 30-minute drive from the main part of Chiang Mai. It is worthwhile to note that the Tiger Kingdom is a relatively new and modern tourist location that offers different individuals a chance to see tigers.

As a modern tourist location, everything in this small park is monetized. So, you should be ready to buy tickets as you try to see tigers. The tickets come in different packages, and the packages will determine what you can do with the tigers in the Tiger Kingdom. So, you should be prepared to pay for tickets as you visit this tiger park.

Inside the park, you will find lots of baby tigers as well as older ones. It is often easy to interact and even play with the baby tigers. The little ones are usually harmless as many of them were hand-raised. Hence, they are used to having humans around them without trying to hurt anyone. Nevertheless, you still want to be careful while interacting with the tigers in the Tiger Kingdom.

You should expect a tour guide to follow you throughout the trip inside the kingdom. Also, you will be given a couple of rules such as how to touch tigers, how to approach them, etc. These are some of the ways to ensure that everyone stays safe.

Tiger Kingdom – Phuket

Another place for seeing tigers is the Tiger Kingdom in Phuket. The offers of this park are quite similar to those of the Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai. The park has several tigers – both small and big ones. Therefore, you can hardly have any issues with feeding your eyes with the sight of these wonderful animals in the Tiger Kingdom (Phuket). In addition, there are cheetahs in the park; so, you may want to see them too.

Notably, tickets are sold for anyone that wants to view tigers in this park. The tickets are available in different sizes – Giant, Big, Medium, Small, and Smallest. You should budget at least 800 Thai Baht for buying any of these tickets for seeing tigers. However, children will pay less, but they must be accompanied by an adult before they can be allowed into the Tiger Kingdom in Phuket.

While it is generally safe to see tigers in the Tiger Kingdom, you should be cautious. In 2014, it was reported that a man was attacked and wounded by a tiger in the park. Therefore, you should be this in mind while you are interacting with the tigers.

It is noteworthy that people used to see tigers in the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi which is not far from Bangkok. However, in 2016, the site was closed down due to the maltreatment of these wild animals by the guides and owners of the park. More than 150 tigers were taken away by the Thai authority. Now, it is an abandoned site with a few animals.

In addition, World Wildlife reported that there have been additional sightings of tigers in other places in Thailand. As a consequence of this, you may be lucky to see wild tigers in other locations in Thailand apart from the aforementioned three parks.

9 of the best hikes in Thailand

Couple with backpack hiking in rainforest

You won't be disappointed by the hiking possibilities in Thailand © fredfroese / Getty Images

With wistful, misty peaks, ancient hidden temples, otherworldly karst outcrops and dense jungle teeming with wildlife, Thailand offers a veritable feast for hikers.

Whether you want to conquer mountains, circumnavigate stunning sandy islands or simply make your way to Thailand's biggest waterfall, there's plenty to pick from. What's more, with a superb transport system , it's easy to reach most hiking trails independently – though there are plenty of excellent trekking guides available too.

So grab a heavy-duty insect repellent, pack some sunscreen and buy some leech socks – we’re about to set off. These are the best hikes in Thailand.

Scenic outlook of mountains from Tiger Cave Temple, (Wat Tham Suea), Krabi region, Thailand

1. Krabi’s Tiger Cave Temple

Best hike to a temple 1km (0.6 miles), half a day, moderate

It's a short, steep climb up to the 278m-high (912ft) limestone outcrop that overlooks Krabi Town , but hikers who successfully tackle the 1260 stairs to the summit are rewarded with access to Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple) and some stellar views. The temple takes its name from the belief that tigers once dwelled in the surrounding caves. There are no prowling big cats here now; instead, golden stupas and a large seated Buddha silently keep watch over the emerald forest and sprawling blue sea below.

Carry enough water for both the ascent and the humidity. Also, remember to wear culturally appropriate clothing (trousers or long skirts and tops that cover your shoulders) as it’s a Buddhist temple. A hiking pole can be useful – both to haul yourself up and to keep the resident monkeys at a distance.

2. Khao Yai National Park

Best hike in a national park Distances vary, 2–3 hours, easy

Established as Thailand's first national park in 1962, Khao Yai is the best place for a jungle trek near Bangkok . It boasts more than 50km (31 miles) of hiking trails that teem with macaques, gibbons, civets, barking deer and endemic bird species such as the great hornbill.

There are a couple of short, circular trails that begin near the park’s headquarters. However, as wild elephants are often spotted in the reserve, guides are required for venturing any deeper into the rainforest. Avoid visiting on weekends and public holidays as cars often fill the roads to the main sights, including the 150m-high (492ft) Haew Narok waterfall and Haew Suwat cascade, whose 25m-high (82ft) drop dazzled millions in Danny Boyle's cult film The Beach (2000).

Tourists gather on a lookout point on the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai of Thailand

3. Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

Best hike in Thailand 2.7km (1.6 miles), 2–3 hours, easy

The short Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail offers hikers a chance to see one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Thailand. Set inside the Doi Inthanon National Park near Chiang Mai , the 2200m-high (7218ft) Kew Mae Pan mountain stands only a few hundred meters south of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak at 2565m (8415ft).

The trek itself is a short circular trail with boardwalks. It begins inside a forest of mossy trees and ferns that bursts with red rhododendrons between January and March. After passing the Mae Pan waterfall, the thicket thaws into a viridian grassland and leads hikers to the Kew Mae Pan Viewpoint (also called Station 9) that dominates the whole reserve and is known for its breathtaking sunrise views. Guides are compulsory here (200B per group).

Woman exploring the bamboo forest in Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

4. Khao Sok National Park

Best jungle trek Distances vary, 2–3 hours, moderate

Skirting the southern side of Cheow Lan lake, the dense forest and towering limestone karsts of Khao Sok make the national park one of the best jungle treks in southern Thailand. With 48 mammals roaming the forests , there are plenty of excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, too. It’s gibbons, macaques and barking deer for the most part, but more elusive species such as sun bears, clouded leopards and tigers have been known to make an appearance too.

Several trails, each around 12km (7.5 miles) long, start from Khao Sok village on the southern edge of the park. They then cut through dense forest and wind past tumbling waterfalls until they reach the southern shore of the lake.

In October and December, the world’s largest (and smelliest) parasitic flower, the Rafflesia kerrii, blooms, which can be quite a sight. Post-hike, Cheow Lan's floating homestays, surrounded by fang-like karsts that rise from the water, are a popular spot to experience the lake and the northern side of the reserve.

Best island hike Distances vary, 4–6 hours, easy to moderate

Motorcycles are the only vehicles allowed on the low-key island of Koh Jum , just off of Krabi. Fortunately, the most rewarding way to explore this paradisiacal atoll is on foot. The western coast has a flat trail that flits between coves and quiet beaches for 6km (3.7 miles), but for views as far as Ko Phi-Phi (on clear days), tackle the steep climb up Khao Koh Pu hill.

There are two trailheads that lead to the 400m-high (1312ft) summit. The most direct route starts at the 2.9km sign on the circular road surrounding the hill. Navigating the empty rubber estates can be tricky, but locals will take guests up for about 1000B.

Sunrise at Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary, Phang Nga Bay

6. Um Phang

Best multiday hike Distances and times vary, moderate to hard

Overlooked for the more popular Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son provinces, Um Phang and Tak offer spectacular hiking but with a fraction of the visitors. All treks start in and around the  Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary and use the Mae Klong River as a handy artery for deeper jungle exploration.

The region is great for multiday hikes. Travelers could spend a week trawling its hills, bunking down at Karen villages and hiking south along the border with Myanmar to the Three Pagodas Pass at Sangkhlaburi, a border between Thailand and Myanmar that once was the main supply line for the construction of the Japanese Thailand–Burma railway in WWII.

However, most come to see Thailand's largest waterfall, Nam Tok Thilawsu . From the wildlife sanctuary, it’s a two-hour hike to the striking cascade through dense palm, giant bamboo and strangler figs. Its pools are suitable for swimming too. Advanced hikers and peak-busters should attempt the grueling 20km (12.5-mile) slog to Mount Kagerla, the fourth-highest peak in Thailand. However, at 1428m (4685ft), it’s not for the faint of muscle.

7. Phanom Rung

Best hike to an ancient temple 1km (0.6 miles), half a day, easy

It may not be a traditional hike, but few places are more inspiring than the Phanom Rung complex near Buriram . Standing on the rim of a dormant volcano, some 200m (656ft) above the rice fields of Isan, this 10th-century Khmer temple is built from pink sandstone.

Not only a striking archaeological site, the climb to Phanom Rung follows an ancient walkway flanked with the heads of Naga (serpent guardians), adding to its character. From the car park, the trail morphs into a stairway to the plateau where the main temple and its 15 doorways await.

A person in silhouette on the top of a mountain with the setting sun against the clouds creating a ripple effect in the sky

8. Phu Kradueng National Park

Best hike to a peak 9.5km (5.9 miles), 4–6 hours, moderate to hard

Phu Kradueng (Bell Mountain) is the main peak in the namesake national park of Loei Province in northeast Isan. The climb isn’t that taxing to begin with, but it gets tougher as hikers approach the plateau-like summit. A campsite at the top offers hikers the chance to spend the night and rent bicycles for those wanting to explore the area at their own pace.

Locals typically complete the climb in a day, but staying over at the top affords hikers the chance to see a stunning sunset over the Mak Dook cliffs. Sunrise over the Nok Aen cliffs is equally compelling. The descent is hard on the knees; borrow one of the walking sticks on offer.

9. Bangkok Phra Pradaeng Loop

Best hike near Bangkok 12km (7.5 miles), 3 hours, easy

Known as the “ Green Lung ” of Bangkok, this walking trail and bicycle path starts at the Bang Krachao Pier (also known as Bang Kachao) and has been protected by long-standing laws prohibiting the construction of tall buildings in this area. Hiking out here is a rare opportunity to see how the Thai capital looked a few decades ago.

Most of the route follows suspended pathways built above a mangrove swamp with a number of homes built on stilts. Try to hike on a Sunday when the Talad Bang Nam Phueng market sells delicious street food and all sorts of goods, from pearl earrings to coconut pancakes.
