Anytone at-588uv dual band mobile radio.

radio voyager 588

Is this the Chinese mobile radio at a good price point ($275) people have been waiting for? The specs list a detachable head, cross-band repeat, 50/40 watts, 758 memories, AM aircraft receive, wide-band FM receive, and 2013 FCC compliant. Ed’s site even mentions that it’s Part 90 certified.

Here is the text of Ed’s e-mail:

radio voyager 588

It’s computer programmable and the control head separates from the radio via a CAT5 cable. This radio is easy to manually operate because there are no sub-menus and there are matching controls for the left and right sides. Either side can be set for VHF or UHF or both the same. It has dual receive (two signals at once) and when transmitting, you can set the off side to be muted if desired. Unlike the Wouxun, with the AnyTone, you can scan one side while monitoring the other side. It only takes a couple button pushes to set up cross band repeat. And unlike the other brand, this cross band repeat actually works! It has AM Aircraft receive plus 220-260 MHz receive (sorry NO 220 transmit).

The company has given me this timeline for availability. They plan to produce a small run at the end of September and hopefully full production by the end of October. I suggested they make a larger test run because I’ve found nothing major that needs improving. I’ve made a few suggestions for firmware changes which they quickly approved. This company is interested in producing a good product. When the AT-588UV is available to purchase, I will send an announcement to this mailing list.

The owners manual is not yet available but I have a list of the various functions. I will post this information and the programming software on my web site as soon as I can. This will take you to that location.

Best Regards, Ed Griffin

So, what do you think?  Will you be in for one of these?

Which would you choose, this radio or a Yaesu FT-7900R ($350) or Icom IC-208H ($345)?

Looks promising. Any price point been set yet ?

Hi Keith, it looks like the price is going to be somewhere around $275.

Thanks Matt.. I just reread it and must have missed that the first time. Seems the Chinese are taking small steps, but who knows, maybe a HF/6 might be in the future that will come in at a Great price..

I would be interested in these radios

I would love to be able to clone from one unit to the other if you got two. Question please. Are the buttons backlight on the mic and the head for easy use at night while mobile? Thanks 🙂

Sounds like a good deal, would like to be on the beta list.

Does it have a packet port?

would like to be able to do aprs and voice on this radio

Will purchase when available.

definitely interested. please keep me informed as to price and availability. thanks.

Why cant other radios sell for prices like this one !

200/250 If the dollar is very good greetings from

I have a FT-8800 and Anytone AT-588UV I purchased at Dayton. Programing the Anytone is easy using only the Radio and real easy with the Free Software. A Seperation Kit, and programing cable makes it a better deal. I only wish it had a data jack in the back. If I were to purchase a FT-8800 or AT-588UV it would be a AT-588UV because of extras and because ease of operation.

Hello, Just pulled the trigger on a AT-5888uv. I’m a little confused, is the AT-588uv and the AT-5888uv the same radio? The similar nomenclature is used across the board. Is there a difference? I see there is a tri-band model in the works, will it be called the AT-58-588-5888-58888-588888-5888888uv? Would a family, in China, name all their sons Bob, really?

Hi, I am looking at one of these as a cheap dual band rig for the car. Can they be programmed to cover only the 2 Metre and 70Cm band on TX? Wideband RX is fine, but I prefer “limited” TX if possible. Thanks. John.

you can progran the radio any way you like, and then lock it, to changes. You will then transmit where you want and won’t where4 youi do not weant to go.

Seems the mic buttons are back lite but the radio buttons are not. Don’t like that for driving with in..Just like the Yaesu 8900, a dangerous radio at night.

I have a number of radios from WOUXUN and one from ANYTONE. Neither manufacturer apparently has the language expertise to write a reasonably good operators manual. The ANYTONE AT5888UV came with one of the worst manuals I’ve ever tried to read.

Also, to be clear, WOUXUN supposedly manufactured the model AT-5888UV and ANYTONE produced the AT-588UV. This does not explain the ANYTONE branded AT-5888UV (NOT AT-588UV) I have in front of me right now…a radio that was supposed to have been built by ANYTONE. There is confusion, somewhere. Assuming “AT” in the model denotes ANYTONE, it makes little sense that WOUXUN would have used the same “AT” in their model number (unless WOUXUN and ANYTONE are the same company.)

The issue with funky model numbering is not minor since the AT588 and AT-5888 radios are said to be different and appear to be sold and supported? by different companies. Now the ANYTONE.com website lists four portable radios as their products and the AT mobile is not listed.

Not a good way for either of these companies to do business.

Thoughts of a dutch radio amateur, review anytone at-588uv.

After reviewing Wouxun’s mobile transceiver , which still needed some work, all attention shifted towards the Anytone AT-588UV (now changed to AT-5888UV ). I’m not the first to express my feelings about this rig, nor will I be the last. I took my time to review this mobile radio, as early reports contradict each other in almost every respect. When opinions vary from ‘Piece of junk’ to ‘Best radio ever’, I tread more carefully than usual.

First impressions The Anytone AT-588UV is a good looking mobile rig. The front panel is detachable for mobile use. Eight direct access keys are placed just under the LCD. The readability of the typeface used to describe their function is excellent, even from a distance. Display color is highly configurable, thanks to the implemented RGB color system. An insanely loud beep, enough to scare the living daylights out of you, is heard when you switch on the radio. This can’t be changed.

radio voyager 588

When seen from above, this Anytone looks similar to the Alinco DR-635, up to the position of the internal speaker and cooling fan. The fan of the Anytone only kicks in when needed. Nice.

radio voyager 588

The external speaker connector is unreliable. The only way to make it work is by inserting the 3.5mm plug firmly and pull it out slightly. One wrong move, one little tremble, and the audio goes dead. Probably easy to fix, but sloppy nonetheless.

radio voyager 588

Menus The menus look very similar to the ones we know from Yaesu. Personally I don’t mind; Yaesu menus are relatively easy to work with once you understand the logic behind them. There are some options there you won’t see elsewhere. A two/five tone generator is one of them, AM detection up to 174 MHz is another. AM detection can be set to automatic or manual. The last option will allow you to listen to AM transmissions on 2 meters, not only air traffic.

Receiver Sensitivity on both bands is fine, between -124dBm on UHF and -127dBm on VHF. I had really low expectations when I started to look at the quality of the front end. VA3ISP reported that he heard pager blasts while listening to the amateur bands, but I couldn’t replicate such problems. On the contrary, the receiver of the AT-588UV performed better than average when it came to handling unwanted and strong out-of-band signals.

Frequency range RX: 118-174 MHz (AM/FM) 220-260 MHz 350-400MHz 400-490 MHz 49-870 MHz (Optional)

RX Audio RX audio is not very pleasant to listen to. There’s such an amount of distortion that’s is not something which is only measurable, but clearly audible. The audio amplifier also spits out a generous amount of noise, even when the volume is turned down to a minimum. On top of all this there’s an annoying high pitched tone present when the squelch opens. My frequency counter, DSO, nor spectrum analyzer were able to isolate the frequency due to the reported noise and distortion. I eventually managed to pinpoint the frequency by tuning my function generator until both tones were zero beat. I ended up at 4000Hz, give or take a few Hz.

Transmitter My review sample suffered from a flaw which has the same effect as a broken microphone wire: sometimes your modulation is fine, sometimes it’s gone almost completely. To make sure it really wasn’t a problem with the microphone, I replaced it by another microphone which belongs to my Anytone 70MHz transceiver. The problem didn’t go away. Contrary to other reports there seems to be no relation to the input level – it doesn’t matter whether I whisper or yell. When it works, TX audio quality is great though.

The problem doesn’t impact the cross-band repeater system (which, BTW, works well.)

Power output The Anytone AT-588UV offers four power output levels: Low, Mid2, Mid1, and High. Measurements done at 145 MHz and 435 MHz respectively are as follows:

145 MHz Low: 4.8 Watts Mid2: 9.2 Watts Mid1: 29 Watts High:  52 Watts

435 MHz Low: 2.1 Watts Mid2: 5.4 Watts Mid1: 15 Watts High: 35 Watts

Frequency range TX: 136-174MHz 400-490MHz

Harmonic suppression Whenever you look at harmonic suppression, VHF seems to be harder to control than UHF. There is some room for improvement on VHF, but overall the Anytone does a good job.

radio voyager 588

VHF, second harmonic, 53dBm down. Room for improvement.

radio voyager 588

VHF, third harmonic, 64dBm down. Excellent.

radio voyager 588

UHF, second harmonic, 58dBm down. Good.

Conclusion The Anytone AT-588UV is far from perfect. The rig is plagued by design flaws which all have to be sorted out by the manufacturer if they want to have any chance of impressing the ham radio world.

If I may be blunt: many flaws are impossible to live with. If I transmit, I want to be heard. If I listen, I don’t want to be annoyed by noise, distortion and high pitched tones. If this annoys a 57 years old guy who even can’t hear the complete audio spectrum anymore, I wonder how younger operators would think about this.

Then there’s build quality, which is only average. I’ve spotted coils which weren’t soldered properly, causing one end of the coil to hang one micron above PCB ground. There are PCB connectors which aren’t aligned neatly. The external speaker output is unreliable. You can’t get away with this, not even when it’s compensated by a rock bottom price.

Bottom line: good ideas, poor execution. I’m sure the manufacturer can fix the rig, but it will take time. If I would like to own a Chinese mobile radio, I’d rather put my money in an improved version of the Wouxun KG-UV920R.

Well, it’s clear what to think in general of most china products that are not of the likes like Yeasu , Icom, or Kenwood, it is also good to know, so you should not pay too much, recently i bought a gsm-watch, via Dutch website, but it was ordered from china….. total crap ! waste of money 😦

NTIA requires TX frequency stability of 1.5 ppm for Part 90 radios. I wonder what it is for this sucker.

some radios can be hooked up to a lcd screen. can this one?

It appears so, there’s an A/V connection at the back. I’ve not been able to test this. There’s an Anytone Yahoo group active; it could be worth wile to register there and ask current owners.

Has anyone heard if the company is making any changes to address these types of concerns?

After my initial review it became completely silent. I don’t know how I should interpret this.

This model is a dual bander? Confused about that.

A distributor in the United States told me that many of the problems with the radio would be fixed with those shipped on 20 March 2013. He also stated software would be available to bring previous versions upto date. It will be interesting to see if there are changes for the better.

That would be great. So far the radio didn’t impress in any way, which was disappointing. Let’s see if they dare to send me another review sample… they might hate me by now 😉

Hi all I did a video (sri for poor quality) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgPF4UrSkUg you can see what happens, if squelsh is open volume is half and than reducing the volume till its “quiet” you see the tone has 10-15db and 4500 hz. Raising the volume and the tone doesnt affect the acoustic noise. The same you will hear, and after that you hear the tone is overlaying the signal of a repeater. 73 Alex OE3JTB

Hi Alex, what does this mean? I’m not sure I understand, I see the video, and I heard a slight “hiss” when squelch was not open. Also are you testing the latest radio that they are shipping? I was told they fixed the previous problems and reviews I am reading say the radio is a great performer, the reviews I read are from hams who have owned other dual band radios over the years and they seem to be pleased with this radio. Perhaps the bugs have been fixed in the newest release of this rig…

Hi Nic, I bought this radio CRT 270M = Anytone 5888UV = Intek 2040 at beginning of May new, so it should be the newest version. If squelsh on but volume is off the hiss is lower than if you have a weak signal < S3 , than I can not read the other station. In http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Anytone_AT-588UV/message/536 some hams returned the radio or sold it, its very annoying. I wrote to CRT http://www.crtfrance.com according this problem, no answer yet. In the video you see x-axis = frequency y-axis=level/db, so first squelsh open and only noise, frequency = 800hz/relative level 0db, than squelsh on,monitor on, volume off frequency = 4500hz, relative level -20db. If I get now answer from CRT till this week, I will return the CRT 270 to my dealer…. 73 Alex

Next error or should be a feature, with squelsh level off, signal meter shows nonsens look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UnO-Bnc_rQ 73 Alex OE3JTB

This is a common ‘feature’ lately. The UV-5R, UV-B5 and many other radios do the same.

I have the same problem with the crossband Schuel and also does not work nose if it is blocked by software proque anyone know anything about this? exite any website to update the firmware?

Hi Hans, I found this, http://radioaficion.com/cms/revision-anytone-at-5888uv/ did you know about this?

Seems that they translated my review.

Hi I’m looking for a duel band mobile to pair up with a Kam XL duel port TNC for packet radio. It would have to support dual simultaneous TX on both V/UHF bands + CAT control for frequency and power agility. Any idea’s? I guess this radio is not it as I don’t even see a rear data port for packet? Regards, Ken – vk4akp (@Gmail) .-.-.

hi this radio have the capacity to be a repeater on its own??? was made to believe it is so, please clarify, thanks.

On its own only cross-band repeat, not within the same band.

Any idea where to get a replacement mike for this?

Pingback: My 3 Big Purchases of 2014 | Grapevine Ham Radio

Hello all I have 3 AT-5888uv radios and love them. But now 2 have a speaker issue. The speaker volume is very low on the UHF side. It is fine on the VHF side. If I put UHF on the left and right the I have volume. any input would be great

Does enyone knows how to turn on the av connection of AnyTone AV-5888UV or Voyager?

there is no TRANSMIT when i set my anytone at-588uv to cross band repeat… have i done something wrong or is there really a problem with my radio? please help… thank you

i'm having issues that I've tried everything I can think of to solve the problem... I've had this scanner scanning the same system for over a year now. For some reason the last month 1 of the trunking talkgroups has bleed over from a different Talkgroup on top of having it usual radio traffic. I have tried setting the End Code to Analog and Digital, I've reset the scanner to Factory Settings and re-programmed it again, but it's still doing it. It doesn't do it on my actual fire radio handheld just on a scanner. I tried a different scanner and it doesn't do it on the other scanner, so I'm not sure why my BCD536HP is acting this way... Has anyone else had this problem of another Talkgroup interfering with the main talkgroups? Thanks!

1. Does this happen with just the one TG. 2. Does this TG have to be active and the 2nd TG become active to happen. 3. Have they added a new site close to your location. I say this because because someone has added a high power TRBO or NXDN system in our area as we are hearing digital data on squelch tails on scanners, motorola radios, kenwood radios. This is happening at dispatch centers, cars, home you name it VHF and UHF both. Our dealer has ask me I have had no luck finding said radio system yet.

1. It only happens with 1 TG. 2 no the TG doesn't have to be active, the bleed over activates it like it was a regular transmission. The bleed over is from another TG on the Sheriff's TG, same system but different TG number. 3. No new sites or frequencies

KevinC

Are you sure they aren't patching the TG's?

Would be nice to see this data stream with something like pro96com. Does this do this with all Users on this talk group or just a few? What are the 2 TG ID's? How far are you from the TRS tower site? It would be a pain but you could convert all the Dec TG's to Hex TG's and see if the problem goes away. P25 site or analog?

Are you using the latest firmware? I know you mentioned looking at it, but make sure the Analog End Code is enabled. If it isn't the transmissions you are hearing may be riding the coat tails of the other transmissions.

Pro96com works mostly with gre built scanners for P25 data streams if you are using unitrunker that is the same type data. Does it do it all the time or can you find where multiple TG's are active at the sametime.

Anybody have any input on this?? I found out what the interference was. The channel that is being interfered is a Fire-Rescue Tactical channel that units use to respond to calls on. The offending interfering channel is a Sheriff's Inquiry/Info channel. When I use my radio or another scanner it doesn't do it, it only occurs on my BCD536HP. I've tried wiping the memory and re-writing the data, everything...

Try the IF Exchange (IFX) and see if that solves it.

Where do I find that at? And what does IFX do or not do?

It does just what it says - exchanges the IF frequency used and will eliminate image issues with strong signals. You can "find it" by stopping on the problem channel then hitting FUNC 7 (IFX).

Hmmmm thanks! I'll try it now! :]

My only thing is these 2 channels are on the same trunked system and they're both talkgroups so I'm not sure about signals being strong or not, I thought talkgroups on the same trunked system have equally-strengthed signals.

But I could be wrong, :] I'll try your IFX thingy and see! Thanks :]

That may not work, then. When you were talking about Fire and SO channels, I thought you were talking about conventional frequencies. On a trunked system, any user on the same frequency will be subject to the same interference. Is it possible this is from two different trunk systems?

No, this is why I'm so confused and begging for help... They're both on the same system. Just different talkgroups, and the talkgroups aren't even like only 1 or 2 digits away from each other, there's a whole 17,000 digit apart difference. And they aren't mistakenly patched together I've already considered that. The weird thing is it ONLY happens on my BCD536HP scanner, not my radio or any other scanners I have, just my 1.....

Engineers Pinpoint Cause of Voyager 1 Issue, Are Working on Solution

Engineers have confirmed that a small portion of corrupted memory in one of the computers aboard NASA’s Voyager 1 has been causing the spacecraft to send unreadable science and engineering data to Earth since last November. Called the flight data subsystem (FDS), the computer is responsible for packaging the probe’s science and engineering data before the telemetry modulation unit (TMU) and radio transmitter send the data to Earth.

In early March , the team issued a “poke” command to prompt the spacecraft to send back a readout of the FDS memory, which includes the computer’s software code as well as variables (values used in the code that can change based on commands or the spacecraft’s status). Using the readout, the team has confirmed that about 3% of the FDS memory has been corrupted, preventing the computer from carrying out normal operations.

The team suspects that a single chip responsible for storing part of the affected portion of the FDS memory isn’t working. Engineers can’t determine with certainty what caused the issue. Two possibilities are that the chip could have been hit by an energetic particle from space or that it simply may have worn out after 46 years.

Although it may take weeks or months, engineers are optimistic they can find a way for the FDS to operate normally without the unusable memory hardware, which would enable Voyager 1 to begin returning science and engineering data again.

Launched in 1977 , the twin Voyager spacecraft flew by Saturn and Jupiter, and Voyager 2 flew by Uranus and Neptune. They are both exploring interstellar space, outside the bubble of particles and magnetic fields created by the Sun, called the heliosphere. Voyager 2 continues to operate normally.

Engineers attempt to fix a computer glitch on Voyager 1

Voyager 1's system that sends data home is malfunctioning, preventing the computer from operating as it should.

Social Sharing

Last November, the Voyager 1 spacecraft began sending gibberish radio signals back to Earth. Engineers have now identified the problem, but trying to repair a 46-year-old device on a craft 24 billion kilometres from Earth is not easy.

Voyager 1 and its twin Voyager 2 were both launched in 1977 on a reconnaissance mission to Jupiter and Saturn. They were designed to fly past the giant planets to obtain closeup images of those distant worlds and their myriad of moons.

Both spacecraft performed beyond expectations, discovering many new moons — some covered in ice , one with active volcanoes , another with a thick atmosphere and closeup details of Saturn's rings .

Following the Saturn encounter, Voyager 1 was flung upwards by Saturn's gravity on a trajectory northward, above the orbital plane in which most of the planets orbit the Sun, out of our solar system. NASA extended its mission and from there it went on to become the first human-made object to venture into interstellar space in 2012.

Voyager 2, however, was aimed toward Uranus and Neptune, which were conveniently positioned in a rare alignment with Jupiter and Saturn making it the only spacecraft to visit those distant worlds.

Following the grand tour of the outer solar system, Voyager 2 was also tossed out toward interstellar space in 2018 when its mission was extended and where it continues on its journey today.

  • After a 42-year journey, Voyager 2 goes interstellar
  • Voyager 1 picks up the 'hum' of interstellar space

While their primary missions were over, both spacecraft were still in good health, thanks largely to their nuclear power sources or Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTG). These containers hold small amounts of plutonium which provide heat that is turned directly into electricity with no moving parts. They have an expected lifetime of around 50 years and have kept the Voyagers' instruments running.

Now, as both spacecraft continue their journey through the space between the stars, they are showing signs of their age.

For Voyager 1, the problem seems to be in the flight data subsystem (FDS) that packages data from the scientific instruments for transmission to Earth. The scientists don't know if the faulty module was corrupted by cosmic rays or just worn out, but they say they're optimistic they may be able to work around the problem, although it will take some time.

Engineers have confirmed that corrupted memory aboard my twin <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Voyager1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Voyager1</a> has been causing it to send unreadable data to Earth. It may take months, but our team is optimistic they can find a way for the FDS to operate normally again: <a href="https://t.co/qe5iQUu4Oj">https://t.co/qe5iQUu4Oj</a> <a href="https://t.co/AGFBZFz53v">https://t.co/AGFBZFz53v</a> &mdash; @NASAVoyager

The challenge is that the computers were built in the 1970s using old code and send data very slowly by today's standards.

In addition, these computers are so deep in space, it takes 22.5 hours for a radio signal from Voyager 1 to reach Earth. That means the controllers on the ground have to wait 45 hours for each two-way communication with the spacecraft.

Given how very, very far they are from home, if something goes wrong with them, it's up to engineers on the ground to fix it by sending radio signals since reaching them for repair missions isn't possible. We're a long way from the fictional warp drive and sub-space communication that made life so easy on the Starship Enterprise of Star Trek fame.

The twin Voyagers are now the most distant objects ever sent from Earth; a demonstration of how vast space is and how slow our spacecraft are. In 1977, I attended the launch of Voyager 2 when my hair was black and skin was smooth. This one mission with Voyager 1 and 2 has occupied a good chunk of my lifetime.

A young looking Bob McDonald wearing a space-themed t-shirt stands next to another young man with a star on his shirt with the golden record over his shoulder.

In another few years, the RTGs on both Voyagers are expected to run down to the point where the spacecraft will no longer be able to communicate with Earth. They will just continue to drift in silence among the stars of the Milky Way for billions of years.

However, there is one item on both Voyagers that will continue to function, the Golden Record, which carries a message from Earth to anyone out there who may find the spacecraft in the future.

The chances of them being found are astronomically small, but they will become the longest running experiment in human history.

A close up image of the Voyager record shows some diagrams on the front as a time capsule.

Shukhov Radio Tower Saved by Moscow City Hall

radio voyager 588

  • Written by Rory Stott
  • Published on August 19, 2014

Moscow 's Cultural Heritage Department has stepped in to save Vladimir Shukhov 's historic 1922 Shabolovka Radio Tower, with a conservation order protecting its materials, architectural composition, structural elements and location. The news will be a relief to the many architects - including Tadao Ando , Elizabeth Diller , Rem Koolhaas and Thom Mayne - who agreed with Norman Foster that the tower is "a structure of dazzling brilliance and great historical importance", and signed a petition urging for the structure to be saved .

Thanks to the conservation order, the neglected building will have to be repaired, and Moscow City Hall now hopes to collaborate with Russia 's national government to organize an open international competition the restoration and re-purposing of the 160m tower.

Read on after the break for more on the Shukhov Tower's proposed future

The proposals to dismantle the structure were driven by the opportunity for development, but also by the tower's advanced state of decay. With the conservation order protecting not only the building's materials but also its current location, the efforts at restoration will be something of a race against time, with the Moscow Times reporting that the tower could "become a danger to the neighborhood" if it is not repaired within 5 years.

However, the road to restoration is already looking bumpy: Russian newspaper Izvestia comments that the legality of the proposed international competition is already in question, thanks to legislation requiring local heritage experts to be involved.
