Road trip stop! Gas reasonable and restrooms clean! Boom, that's it! Only 2 things you need!

The gas pumps are sooooo slow! We had two vehicles and got 10 gallons in each in 25 minutes and we left. Ridiculous. Also, no ice.

Photo of Banks H.

Worst gas station experience of my life. The pumped moved slower than anything I've ever seen. I had to leave before I even filled up because I was so impatient. It's a great spot to stop if you want to waste upwards of an hour to fill up your vehicle. If zero stars was possible I would give that. Never coming back.

This place has everything laundry room, lounge room, showers you name it they have it. Service was great and so many different options to choose from In the food section. Highly recommend having this your place to stop while traveling.

May2023:2 : Okay, this location was significantly different from the other locations we stopped along the way of our trip. Several of the outside pumps were out of order with bags over them. The personnel inside at the cash register were efficient and capable. Good customer service and greeting skills. I walked through this area and it appears that the attached businesses are not functional except for the sit down diner. There was a sign at the front that indicated seat yourself. I stopped in the restroom and was disgusted by the filthy nature of the whole thing.

Convenient as it's right off the highway, pump worked great with no issues. Inside, the bathrooms are at the opposite end where all the showers, laundry & all the truckers hang out. The women's bathroom was fairly clean and empty. However the men's bathroom had a line and I could smell the urine from outside. Husband used it and said was incredibly filthy and none of the containers had soap.

Even with the pandemic Travel America still manages to keep the party going and seems to still be the exclusive pit stop for travelers. It's been well over a couple years since I last visited this one. Compared to the precovid days it's looking a lot different these days. This time around I visited mainly to pick up some bottled waters and to use the restroom before headed back to Edgewood. The staff was wearing masks. Restrooms were fairly clean. The place was fairly decent with the exception of the usual occasional wacko or two hanging around. They also offer showers for the truckers or travels going through for a small fee. So if your hurting for one that's the spot to hit up. Will I be back? Most likely if I'm in Moriarty since it's the biggest one out there that also offers food.

Avoid this shop. These are by far some of the laziest, worthless technicians I have ever seen in my four years of truck driving I watch the guy who was supposed to replace three tires on my truck take about 15 breaks in the process so after 2 1/2 hours and only having one tire replaced, I told them I was done. Because of this, I will never go to any TA for service ever again they charged me for two hours of work when they only actually work about 20 minutes.

Photo of Paul Y.

Disgusting place. Probably worst place to stop on I40 in the south west. Never have I seen the bathrooms clean. And it seems like it gets way too much traffic they this place than it can accommodate.

Photo of Gerard H.

I don't care if I have 18 flat tires and the engine is falling out of my tractor, I'll never go to the shop here again.

This Gorgeous Lake Was Just Named the Best Hidden Gem in the U.S.

Here's something (and somewhere) fresh.

travel america in moriarty

Jesse/500px/Getty Images

Everyone's on the hunt for the next hidden gem. And according to Tripadvisor reviewers, the next big thing is hiding in the Pacific Northwest.

In July, Places to Travel dropped its new study that aimed to uncover all the coolest hidden gems that are gaining traction around the United States. To find them, the team analyzed TripAdvisor's "hidden gems" lists in every state to compile more than 2,700 U.S. destinations. Then, it narrowed destinations to those with 100 to 1,000 reviews and a rating of at least four stars. It cross-referenced this list with search volume data using the Google Keyword Planner to uncover which places had the highest number of average Google searches per month. The team added the caveat that while "some locations may be known, especially to locals, the hidden gems on this list relate more to less-visited tourist spots."

After looking at all the information, the team named Crater Lake in Oregon the most popular hidden gem destination of the summer, with an average of over 182,100 monthly searches on Google. It added that Crater Lake also has more than 500 Tripadvisor reviews and a 5-star rating.

"The scenic blue lake is in the state's southwestern region and was formed approximately 7,700 years ago," the findings noted. "Globally, the lake is the tenth deepest in the world and claims the top for depth in the U.S. There is plenty to do around the lake, including hikes, fishing, and even skiing."

Following closely behind Crater Lake is another water-centric stop, Havasu Falls in Arizona, which took second place thanks to its more than 147,800 monthly searches and 4.5 average star rating on Tripadvisor. As the team added, 429 out of 539 reviews rate the destination as "excellent."

Joining these spots at the top of the list is Roosevelt Island in New York City in third with 199,500 monthly searches, followed by California's Pinnacles National Park in fourth with 92,200 average monthly searches, and Morton Arboretum in Illinois rounding out the top five with 88,000 monthly searches. Detroit's Eastern Market comes in sixth, followed by Discovery Park in Seattle, Descanso Gardens in California, Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio at the No. 10 spot, proving there are hidden gems sprinkled all over the nation just waiting for to explore.

America's train system doesn't favor you: Here is who to blame, how to begin fixing it

Alan Gore wants to know why Amtrak is almost always late for him. Not just a little bit late, but ridiculously, absurdly, preposterously late.

Like the time he tried to catch an Amtrak train from Phoenix to Los Angeles. He and his girlfriend arrived before their scheduled 7 p.m. departure.

And they waited. And waited. And waited.

The train finally pulled into the station at 5 a.m. – the next day. They connected with the Amtrak Surfliner and arrived in San Luis Obispo, California, their final destination, a full day later than planned.

Check out Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

"One of the conductors told me that being twelve hours late is perfectly normal," said Gore, a photographer who lives in Sedona, Arizona. "I didn't even bother asking for compensation."

Anyone who travels by train in the U.S. knows that feeling. In the latest quarter, Amtrak trains were delayed by 1.42 million minutes , up 9% from the previous quarter and an increase of 10% from 2022. It's particularly bad on Gore's route, the Sunset Limited. Over the last year, passengers have been delayed by a total of 11 weeks and only 28% of trains are on time, according to Amtrak.

"That record is even worse than those numbers indicate because each of those long-distance trains is given a 30-minute grace period before it is officially designated as late," explained Jim Loomis, author of All Aboard: The Complete North American Train Travel Guide .

No babies on flights, planes? Why we should rethink how the little ones travel

How to stay safer on your trip: 'No one plans on security issues' while traveling

Why is Amtrak often so late?

It's complicated. Amtrak does not have dedicated tracks outside the Northeast and parts of Michigan and Indiana and uses the same rails as freight trains. But essential consumer protection rules are missing, too. And the sad fact that most Americans don't care about trains isn't making it any easier to fix the problem.

Joel Sutherland, a professor of supply chain management at the University of San Diego and a former CSX Railroad official, said America's rail network is set up to favor freight trains.

"Amtrak must share the rail lines with freight trains, and freight trains tend to get priority," he said. "This is especially true west of the Mississippi where the rail infrastructure is lacking compared to the East Coast."

Waiting for freight trains is the largest cause of passenger train delays, according to Amtrak. America's rail network is set to favor freight trains, even though, by law, passenger trains should get priority. As a practical matter, the law is difficult to enforce. A proposed bill would allow Amtrak to begin directly enforcing the rules, but the law is stalled in Congress.

Amtrak has also called for an investigation, which is now in progress , into how Union Pacific Railroad favors freight over people on the Sunset Limited. Union Pacific did not respond to questions about delays on the route.

But the problem is bigger. American train passengers lack some basic consumer protections that might motivate rail carriers like Amtrak to fix the problem faster.

Does Amtrak compensate you for delays?

Believe it or not, Amtrak doesn't have to compensate delayed passengers.

There is no federal law that requires even a partial refund if your train is late. (In Europe, you get a 25% refund of the ticket price if the delay is between one and two hours and a 50% refund if the delay is two hours or more under EU regulations ). Amtrak's customer service commitment does not promise compensation for delays, either.

As a practical matter, Amtrak sometimes offers compensation in the form of credits for future travel to passengers who experience a long delay.

"We always encourage customers to let us know about their trips, what went well and what did not," Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said. "For the most part, we work with them individually on whether credit for future travel or a refund is appropriate."

Amtrak has been experimenting with automatically awarding Amtrak Guest Rewards points to customers on Acela trains based on the length of their delay. Amtrak would not give any specifics since it's still a pilot program. But Magliari said passengers are welcome to contact Amtrak and complete a trip report, which could lead to policy changes or additional compensation.

Still, the fact that U.S. rail carriers don't have to compensate their passengers for delays may give them less incentive to fix the delays.

Revenge travel was sweet, but what happens next could turn your vacation sour

Hidden costs: Airlines are hiding the cost of air travel. Now the government wants to help them.

What will it take to fix the delayed trains?

Rail experts say nothing less than a massive new investment in passenger rail infrastructure – new trains, high-speed tracks, generous government support – can fix this mess.

But a little more involvement from passengers might help too.

What does it take to make you care about trains? A lot, apparently.

The last Amtrak story to gain widespread national attention was the "train ride from hell" back in January. That's when an Amtrak Auto Train from Washington, D.C., to Orlando, Florida, was delayed by almost 20 hours because of a freight derailment. Some passengers reportedly called 911 and claimed they were being held hostage on the train. The experience prompted an outcry from Congress, which demanded answers from Amtrak.

But maybe we're looking in the wrong place for the solution. Consider the other big rail story of the year, the opening of Brightline, a private rail service from Miami to Orlando . The high-speed train can travel between the two Florida cities in under three hours. Brightline also plans a high-speed train between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in 2027 on new tracks without freight trains.

Brightline might be enough to make Americans fall in love with trains again. And here's what I mean by love: I recently spent two months in Japan, which has one of the best rail networks in the world. Its shiny bullet train, called the Shinkansen , is faster and more efficient than flying and often less expensive. Veteran tour guide Joe Okada, who at 94 is the oldest tour guide in Japan, said in the 1950s Japan dreamed of a transportation system that was better, faster, cheaper and safer.

"Shinkansen made our dreams come true," he said.

But there is also a sense of national pride in these superfast trains, which whisk you from Tokyo to Kyoto in about two hours, or five hours less than it would take you to drive.

"Have you been on the Shinkansen yet?" people asked me. And when I said yes, they gave me a knowing smile because the Shinkansen is pretty spectacular.

No one said that about Amtrak, except maybe ironically. Amtrak is trying to reverse the trend with new overnight trains , station upgrades and improved meals . But it's not enough. We could fix Amtrak by enforcing the law that gives it the right-of-way and strengthening consumer regulations – and by thinking bigger, when it comes to trains.

"It's past time to have a national conversation about rethinking, funding, and fixing America's rail infrastructure," said Bill McGee, a senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project . "The delays will only worsen the longer we wait."

Elliott's tips for avoiding a train delay

◾ Sign up for delay alerts : You can do that on the Amtrak site . The sooner you know about a delay, the sooner you can make alternate plans, like driving or flying.

◾ For long distances, take Amtrak only on reliable routes : Amtrak's City of New Orleans, between Chicago and New Orleans, is the most punctual (if you can use that term) long-distance train in the most recent quarter, with a 79% on-time rating. It's followed by the Capitol Limited between Washington and Chicago (74%) and the Lake Shore Limited between Boston/New York City and Chicago (68%).  Avoid chronic laggards, like the Sunset Limited between Los Angeles and New Orleans, which is on time only 19% of the time.

◾ Avoid the train entirely : While a train might be faster for some routes (notably where Amtrak owns the tracks in the Northeast), you can often get there faster by driving or taking a bus. For longer distances, flying is almost always more cost-effective and convenient if there’s an airport at or near your destination.

After insulting jennifer aniston and 'childless cat ladies' everywhere, jd vance heads to minnesota.

Jennifer Brooks

Who runs the world?

I, and to a lesser extent Jennifer Aniston, run the world, according to JD Vance.

Specifically, this offputtingly fuzzy man claimed that America is run by "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too." Now the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee is coming to Minnesota with former President Donald Trump to insult us to our faces.

As Trump showed the world he's not man enough to debate Kamala Harris, all eyes turned to a treasure trove of unhinged interviews his running mate gave in 2021. Including a newly unearthed suggestion by Vance that childless Americans (bad!) should be taxed at a higher rate than parents.

" Let's tax the things that are bad ," Ohio's own Vance said during an appearance on the Charlie Kirk show. I cannot prove it, but I strongly suspect that this was when children started using " skibidi Ohio rizz " as an insult.

Nobody levies a punitive tax on Jennifer Aniston on Minnesota's watch, JD Vance.

"I truly can't believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States," the actress posted on Instagram this week as Vance's comments ricocheted around the internet.

Aniston spent most of her childbearing years under public pressure to explain when, whether, why she hadn't had a baby yet. All while she was going through round after heartbreaking round of fertility treatments. Vance and his Senate Republican colleagues blocked protections for in vitro fertility treatments this year after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are people.

Did Vance apologize? He did. To cats.

"Obviously it was a sarcastic comment. I've got nothing against cats," he said on Megyn Kelly's podcast Friday. "The substance of what I said, Megyn — I'm sorry, it is true."

This marks the second time in recent memory that politicians have leveraged cats as insults. First Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey joked that remote workers were "losers" who would rather stay home wrapped in "nasty cat blankets" than go back to commutes and cubicles. Now this.

To paraphrase childless cat lady Taylor Swift, the cats would very much like to be excluded from this narrative.

"My God, they went after cat people. Good luck with that," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz marveled on MSNBC earlier this week. "It would be funny if it wasn't so sad."

People like Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, don't "really have a direct stake" in the future of this country, Vance went on to say in a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson. Because they are "people without children." Apparently, the two stepchildren Harris helped raise don't count any more than the millions of American women who've never given birth.

For someone who claims to be pro-life, Vance sure seems to think some lives have more value than others.

I don't have a kid. I don't even have a cat. What I have is a strong suspicion that for Vance, my sole value to society is my womb.

There are many reasons why people do or don't have children. Absolutely none of them are his business. Some of us couldn't have kids. Some of us didn't want kids. All of us can see that smirk on Vance's face. The smirk of a man who thinks that having children entitles him to attack anyone who doesn't.

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was trying for a baby with her husband, astronaut-turned-U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, when she was shot and nearly killed by a would-be assassin. Let's give her the final word, shall we?

"That dream was stolen from us," she posted on social media. "To suggest we are somehow lesser is disgraceful."

Caught in the CrowdStrike Outage? Here’s How to Get Refunds.

Air travelers paying for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to be reimbursed if their flight was impacted by an event in the airline’s control, like the CrowdStrike failure. Here’s how to get your money back.

  • Share full article

In a crowded airport terminal, a man wearing athletic clothes rests against his suitcase and other luggage, watching a mobile phone with a basketball at his side.

By Christine Chung

The global software outage last week caused thousands of travelers flying in the United States and internationally to have their flights delayed, canceled or both. In the days that followed, some airlines were trying to reboot critical computer systems affected by the outage, with many of their passengers still stranded at airports.

During a travel meltdown, it may seem nearly impossible for air travelers to find immediate help . Gate agents are swamped, customer service phone lines have hourslong hold times, and seemingly confusing or incomplete instructions online only add to the headaches.

Passengers who foot the bill for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to reimbursement if their flights were impacted by an event in the airlines’ control, like the CrowdStrike outage. Here’s how to get your money back.

[Are you seeking compensation from an airline following the Crowdstrike outage? We want to hear from you .]

If they caused the disruption, airlines owe passengers assistance

It is the airline’s fault when a situation under their control — issues with crew, maintenance, baggage and fuel, or software outages — leads to a delay or cancellation. Weather and air traffic control issues do not count. On Friday, the Transportation Department noted that this I.T. outage fell under the control of the airlines.

What passengers will get from airlines depends on how long they were forced to wait, but it could include transport to and from hotels and the costs of accommodation.

Know what you are owed, and ask for it

Strategize your ask. Gate agents may not always know the airline’s commitments or the Transportation Department policies. Usually, airlines prefer to take care of the details, distributing vouchers or directly booking hotel rooms. But during the CrowdStrike fallout, they initially did not believe they were required to provide assistance and later, seemingly, remained unaware of their obligations in some instances or were too overwhelmed by the numbers.

That meant many travelers had to take matters into their own hands to find transport, accommodation and meals, but they are eligible for reimbursement. However, how much will vary by airline and travelers won’t necessarily know before submitting receipts.

Reimbursement can generally be requested through an online form — hold onto your receipts!

Some airlines have online forms for reimbursement requests, while others will require you to contact customer service to start the process. Below are the online reimbursement or customer-services sites for some of the main U.S.-based airlines affected by the outages:

Delta Air Lines

United Airlines

American Airlines

Allegiant Air

Spirit Airlines

If your flight was canceled and you decided not to rebook, you can get a refund

Don’t expect this to be seamless or automatic. Airlines generally have online forms where you can request refunds; you’ll need all of your trip details for this. You can get a refund to your original form of payment; you do not need to accept flight credits or a travel voucher. In addition, you can contact the airline’s customer service team for more help and to check on the status of your claim.

Check the fine print of your credit card agreement or travel insurance policy

If you purchased travel insurance, the policy could cover certain types of trip interruptions, including select air travel issues — and your credit card agreement might also, though it may have a requirement that the affected flight was booked using it.

Here, too, remember to save your receipts and any other documentation, and brace yourself for a possibly lengthy process.

Consider lodging a complaint with the Transportation Department

On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the agency had opened an investigation into Delta’s response to the outage, after receiving numerous passenger complaints about the carrier. If you have a complaint yourself, you can submit it here .

That form can be used for concerns or comments related to other airlines as well, but not for security or safety issues. The Transportation Department investigates complaints, though they advise passengers to contact airlines first.

Exploring America’s most surprising national landmarks

These unique, lesser-known sites preserve more than natural beauty; they pass on important American history.

An aerial view of Central Park.

Central Park, New York

In 1853, when New York State officials approved the funds to purchase land for a park in Manhattan, little did they know that this rocky, swampy terrain covered in small farms would truly become the beloved “lungs of the city” it was intended to be and a respite for 42 million annual visitors.

As park designer Frederick Law Olmsted said about his vision, the park should be “a specimen of God’s handiwork” that could be to common people “inexpensively, what a month or two in the White Mountains or the Adirondacks is, at great cost, to those in easier circumstances.” Olmsted and his British architect partner, Calvert, designed their Greensward Plan, which allowed for formal and natural settings.

The park’s especially visionary element was the network of subterranean transverse roads, a feature that allowed pedestrians and carriages alike to enjoy the park without disturbing each other. More than a century later, much of the original park infrastructure, such as the Mall, the Lake, and the Pond, still exists.

Hallett Nature Sanctuary (formerly the Promontory) is the park’s smallest woodland area and was closed to the public for more than 80 years after invasive species like Norway maples, black cherry, and Japanese knotgrass strangled the native foliage. In 2016, after five years of restoration by the Central Park Conservancy, the nonprofit that maintains the park, Hallett reopened and is now an oasis for park wildlife.

Quiet walks through the woods are not the only adventure on tap in the park. Visitors can run, walk, cycle, or roller-skate along its myriad pathways; play a pickup game of ultimate frisbee with friends; dine al fresco at Tavern on the Green; or listen to a free summer concert. As Olmsted envisioned, Central Park is a beloved destination for both residents and visitors alike.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Mammoth Cave holds evidence of human visitors going back over 4,000 years.

Mapped at 426 miles, Mammoth is the longest known cave system in the world. With each expedition, speleologists continue to find new passageways that are estimated to extend the system 600 miles farther underground.

Mammoth’s 330-million-year-old limestone walls echo with fascinating human history that dates back more than 4,000 years, when prehistoric Native Americans explored over 19 miles of cave passageways in search of minerals. It's still a mystery how the ancient people used these precariously procured substances. Some clues can be found in what they left behind, from gourd bowls to pottery and woven cloth, as well as a few petroglyphs that are mostly geometric depictions of humans.

Legend has it that the cave was rediscovered at the turn of the 19th century, when a Kentucky boy named John Houchin shot and wounded a bear, then followed it into the cave entrance—the same one used by visitors today. The fate of the bear remains unknown, but the rediscovery of the cave was an economic boon to the region. Over the past two centuries Mammoth has been used to mine saltpeter, the primary ingredient in gunpowder; grow mushrooms; and care for the sick in the form of a tuberculosis hospital.

Some of the cave’s first public tour guides in the mid-1800s were enslaved Black men like Stephen Bishop, the first person to cross the terrifying vertical shaft known as Bottomless Pit to discover miles of previously unmapped areas. Today, guests can take ranger-led tours that last up to six hours. The most comprehensive and rigorous is the Wild Cave Tour, which turns visitors into amateur speleologists, crawling, climbing, and squeezing their way through a maze of small holes and canyons for five to six miles.

Selma to Montgomerey National Historic Trail, Alabama

Selma to Montgomerey National Historic Trail, Edmund Pettus Bridge

This 54-mile-long national historic trail commemorates the route, people, and events surrounding the 1965 Voting Rights March from Selma to Montgomery.

It began on March 7, 1965, in Selma, where 600 nonviolent protesters, led by Hosea Williams, John Lewis, Albert Turner, and Bob Mants, set out for Montgomery to demand their right to vote. When they reached the Edmund Pettus Bridge, law enforcement officers attacked the marchers with billy clubs, tear gas, and horses. News of this Bloody Sunday, as it became known, transfixed the nation.

On March 9, 1,500 protestors, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., were once again blocked by state troopers. This day became known as “Turnaround Tuesday.” On March 21, King, followed by 3,000 others, once again set out from Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church. To ensure a peaceful march, President Lyndon B. Johnson used federal authority to call up the Alabama National Guard, which, along with the FBI and federal marshals, lined U.S. Highway 80.

The march grew to 25,000 strong by the time it ended in Montgomery on March 25, where King delivered his famous “How Long? Not Long” speech at the Alabama State Capitol. The three voting rights marches had profound impact. Five months later, on August 6, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law.

Stonewall National Monument, New York

Stonewall Inn

In the 1960s, there were very few havens for the LGBTQ+ community in the United States. One exception was New York City’s Greenwich Village, also a hub for artists, musicians, writers, and protestors of the Vietnam War.

It was home to the Mafia-run Stonewall Inn, a private bottle club where same-sex couples were allowed to openly dance and drink together (at the time, it was illegal in New York to serve alcohol to members of the LGBTQ+ community). LGBTQ+ rights outside the Stonewall Inn were nonexistent. After a raid on any bar where LGBTQ+ people were suspected to be gathering, police officers would line up patrons outside and force them to present identification. If they were wearing at least three pieces of clothing that didn’t match their I.D. gender, the police would arrest them.

Anger over the LGBTQ+ community’s mistreatment came to a boiling point in the early morning of June 28, 1969, when the police raided the Stonewall Inn and began arresting people. No one really knows how the riot started, but as more people were arrested, the crowd grew. One taxi driver died of a heart attack and many people were beaten, but this resistance, which lasted until July 3, served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement around the world.

In 2016 President Barack Obama declared the iron-gated, flower-filled Christopher Park across the street from the Stonewall Inn part of the national monument, the first National Park Service unit to tell the story of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. The park's visitors center opened on June 28, timed with the 55 th   anniversary of the uprising.

How to Earn Points From the Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card

Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card cardholders earn 1.5 points per dollar on all purchases, with no categories or limits to keep track of.

Things get more interesting if you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards customer. The amount of money you have on deposit (like savings or investments) with Bank of America and Merrill (Bank of America's wealth management division) determines your rewards tier. Depending on your tier, you could earn 25% to 75% more rewards.

One other way to boost your returns from the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is by purchasing travel through the Bank of America travel center. In that case, you'll earn 3 points per dollar (instead of 1.5 points per dollar) for your purchase.

With the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, you'll earn points that are easy to redeem for a wide variety of travel expenses. Once you charge a travel purchase to your card, you can apply points at a rate of 1 cent each toward a statement credit to cover the purchase. The minimum redemption amount is 2,500 points ($25), and you'll have 12 months from the transaction date to apply your points.

Bank of America has a broad definition of travel, including some purchases most would classify as entertainment. Categories that qualify for a Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card travel statement credit include:

  • Trailer parks
  • Recreational vehicle rentals
  • Campgrounds
  • Car rental agencies
  • Truck and trailer rental
  • Cruise lines
  • Travel agencies
  • Tour operators and real estate agents
  • Operators of passenger trains
  • Boat rentals
  • Parking lots and garages
  • Tolls and bridge fees
  • Tourist attractions
  • Exhibits like art galleries
  • Amusement parks, carnivals, circuses, aquariums, and zoos

If you're not traveling, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card allows you to use points for non-travel redemptions, but the rates aren't as attractive. For example, you can use points for gift cards starting at 3,125 points ($31.25), and the value per point varies.

If you prefer cash back, you can redeem points for a check or electronic deposit into a Bank of America checking or savings account, or for credit to an eligible Cash Management Account with Merrill. In that case, your points are only worth 0.6 cents apiece, which is not a great value.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card doesn't have a ton of valuable cardholder perks, which is common among credit cards with no annual fee .

Introductory 0% APR on purchases

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card comes with a 0% intro APR for the first 15 billing cycles for purchases and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of account opening. After that, there's a 19.24% - 29.24% Variable APR.

Using a 0% APR credit card offer can be a good way to spread out payments for a big purchase over time without incurring huge interest charges, but you'll want to be sure you have the means and a plan to pay it off. Otherwise, you'll end up with high-interest debt after the introductory period expires.

Keep in mind there are longer intro periods on the best 0% APR credit cards  available right now, and some also include balance transfers in their offers.

No foreign transaction fees

Good travel credit cards don't charge foreign transaction fees , and the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is no exception. Because it doesn't tack on these fees, you can use the card for international purchases and not get stung with extra charges.

Free FICO score

Primary cardholders with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card can check their FICO score for free through Bank of America's online banking, mobile website, or mobile banking app for iPhone and Android. This is a useful tool for keeping tabs on your credit, especially if you don't have another credit card that offers free credit scores ,

Overdraft Protection

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card comes with an optional Balance Connect overdraft protection feature that lets you link your eligible Bank of America deposit account to your card. If you choose to use the service, Bank of America automatically transfers funds from your credit card account to cover overdrafts on your deposit account, as long as you have credit available on your credit card.

You won't be charged overdraft fees for this service, but you'll pay interest on the cash advance.

Mobile Wallet

When you add your Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card to digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, you can use it for in-person, online, or in-app transactions. Because your actual card number isn't stored on your device or shared with most merchants, you'll have more security when you make purchases.

$0 Liability Guarantee

Losing a credit card or having it stolen stinks, but you won't have to worry about fraudulent or unauthorized transactions on your Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card as long as you report the issue promptly.

Along with not having an annual fee and offering a 0% intro APR for the first 15 billing cycles for purchases and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of account opening (then 19.24% - 29.24% Variable APR), the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card doesn't add foreign transaction fees, which makes it a good pick to have in your wallet when you travel abroad.

As with most other cards, you'll pay fees for balance transfers, cash advances, and late or returned payments.

Before you decide on the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, you'll want to consider similar no-annual-fee cards, because some have better earning rates and more flexible options for redeeming rewards. For example, the  Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns 2% cash rewards on purchases, and you can use your rewards for whatever you like — not just travel.

Similarly, the Discover it® Miles earns 1.5 miles per dollar on all purchases, and at the end of the first 12 billing cycles, Discover will match all the rewards you earn. This means you'll effectively earn 3 miles per dollar in the first year, and while it's framed as a travel card, you can also redeem your miles for cash back at the same rate of 1 cent per mile.

If you're more interested in cash back, Bank of America also has cash-back cards available; you can read our Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card review . Or, if you're looking for a higher-tier travel rewards card and are open to an annual fee, you can read our Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card review .
