The A Journey to Love ending has gotten C-drama fans abuzz as it was packed with lots of big moments. Thus, it’s no surprise that many wuxia drama fans had a lot to say about its ending online.

Of course, some viewers may still be wondering what happened in the end, especially regarding the main characters. After all, the ending does leave some elements open to interpretation.

Perhaps the biggest thing about the show’s ending is the fact that the main pairing Ren Ru Yi and Ning Yuan Zhou seem to have died, at least based on earlier fan reactions.

Many fans noted that there was no final goodbye made between the two. There was also no corpse shown. Because of this many believe that Ren Ru Yi and Ning Yuan Zhou survived the drama’s finale.

Soon after the episode was released, there have been lots of alternate interpretations online regarding the status of the two characters.

For instance, a Reddit discussion thread about the finale interpreted the ending to be that the main couple is alive.

The prevailing theory here is that the two faked their deaths and began living quiet lives together.

While there are still some debates online about what truly happened in the end, the show seems to be pretty definitive when it comes to the other character deaths.

Ren Ru Yi and Ning Yuan Zhou are the primary characters, but many viewers have also fallen in love with the show’s entertaining supporting cast.

Sadly, the A Journey to Love ending was a tragic one for the rest of the group. That’s because Yu Shi San, Yuan Lu, and Qian Zhao died in the finale.

At least fans seemed to take solace in the fact that they died heroic deaths. This doesn’t seem to be enough for some fans though as there are some complaints about the ending.

On the whole, though, the reception for the series is still positive based on online discussions on sites such as Reddit.

Even though there are complaints about the ending, many viewers still love the show overall thanks to its memorable characters and moments.

A Journey to Love Drama Review – Liu Shi Shi’s Historical Comeback

A Journey to Love is a Chinese drama that aired in 2023. The leads are Liu Shi Shi and Liu Yu Ning, and today, we’re going to talk about a drama review of A Journey to Love in this blog post.

Let’s get started!

A Journey to Love Synopsis

A female assassin sheds her past identity, Ren Xin, to become the new Ren Ru Yi. She meets the head of Six Realms Hall, Ning Yuan Zhou, a faction of her rival, and together, they face several life-and-death situations.

Main Characters – A Journey to Love Drama Review

Ren ru yi/ren xin.

Ru Yi is the best assassin in the Scarlet Guard. She is highly skilled in martial arts and used to working alone.

Her background caused her to have serious trust issues. Her dad sold her to the Scarlet Guard when she was young. Then, when she joined the Scarlet Guard, she was only ever taught how to carry out missions successfully and was raised to be a walking sword.

Ru Yi does not understand how relationships work because it’s impossible to have lasting relationships in her field of work. The rare exception is her close relationship with Empress Zhao Jie. Empress Zhao Jie is Ru Yu’s mentor and friend, all wrapped in one. When the empress died, Ru Yi vowed to investigate her death. It’s why she ditched her previous life as Ren Xin to start over as Ren Ru Yi. She had a second chance in life, and she took it because a new identity makes investigating her death easier.

Her environment caused her to slow down her understanding of human relationships, as her mentor was one of the only people who treated her well. This all slowly changes when she meets Ning Yuan Zhou and his team. 

Ning Yuan Zhou

Ning Yuan Zhou is the reluctant leader of Six Realms Hall. He is not interested in being in the middle of politics but is dragged into it nevertheless.

Like Ren Ru Yi, he is skilled in martial arts but has more people-smarts. Therefore, he has loyal followers and friends because of his integrity, martial arts skills, and leadership skills.

A Journey to Love – Love Story

As the two leads in this drama are older, the love story in A Journey to Love is mature. Compared to typical idol Chinese dramas, there are fewer childish antics and cutesy scenes.

This was a good choice because the public would have complained that the actors were too old to be playing this kind of love story, and I doubt the actors themselves would have been into it.

According to the character description and how the script was written, the two characters matched well because they are both skilled in martial arts and clever. They are of equal standing and a power couple, which makes sense.

The actors’ romantic chemistry was average. The audience is more likely to be drawn to this drama because of the storyline and how the characters are written rather than the love story.

Supporting Characters – A Journey to Love Drama Review

Princess yang ying.

Yang Ying is a naïve princess whose family has neglected her. No one respects her as a princess. She has the most character development in the drama because she went from being a scaredy-cat to a boss lady.  

Yu Shi San is a part of Yuan Zhou’s team. He is the handsome and flirty one of the bunch and understands women the most.

The actor who played Yu Shi San is Fang Yi Lun. I have seen him in other Chinese dramas, but this was his best role to date (and I’ve watched it)! He suits the playful character well.

Yuan Lu specializes in explosives. He is subordinate to Ning Yuan Zhou but treats Yuan Lu like a little brother. The rest of Yuan Zhou’s team also dotes on Yuan Lu, partly because of his personality and because he has a health issue and is not expected to live after 20 years old.

Yuan Lu is my favourite character in this drama, while Yu Shi San is my second favourite. The casting team did a superb job picking actors for those two supporting characters.

Qian Zhao and Sun Lang

Qian Zhao and Sun Lang are the other guys who make up Ning Yuan Zhou’s tight circle. They are both against the Scarlet Guards, as they have killed people dear to their hearts.

Li Tong Guang

Li Tong Guang is a nobleman with a stalkerish and obsessive one-sided love for his master, Ren Ru Yi. Although she has never shown romantic affection for him, he is irrationally stubborn about them being together.

Drama Highlights – A Journey to Love Drama Review

1) liu shi shi’s role.

Liu Shi Shi was a big reason people tuned in to this series, and she’s one of the main reasons I gave this drama a chance, too. She really is born to be a star. Her appearance in historical dramas emphasizes her beauty, and she is absolutely stunning. I also like that she played an assassin role, which you would not expect from her.

2) Fight Scenes

Fight scenes are Liu Shi Shi’s strength, so the writers were smart enough to use them (she has a dance background, so her coordination is good). With her coordination and choreographed fight scenes, her fight scenes came out wonderfully on screen.

3) The Characters

 Most of the characters, including the supporting characters, felt real, and it was easy to connect with them individually. The characters were generally well-written, but the actors who brought them to life might not have been the best choices. I’ll expand more on this in a bit.

4) Comedic Elements

There was a perfect balance of seriousness and comedic elements. A quick comedic scene always lifts the mood when the show gets too heavy. This is not only for one character; multiple characters can do it.

What Could Have Been Better

1) the ending.

The ending was a huge disappointment. I don’t know what the writers thought because all the main characters were killed. Script writers kill off a main character or two to pull on heartstrings,, but was it necessary for all of them to be gone?

2) Certain Supporting Characters

The character was written well. She had a lot of character development, and if the casting team had selected a more appropriate actress, she could have been a highlight in this drama. However, I didn’t think the actress who played Yang Ying was a good fit. She suited the character as a naïve and skittish character but lacked the substance to play a strong woman. I found myself fast-forwarding her scenes.

This character reminded me of the Emperor from Unchained Love . Both males were willing to do what it took to win over the female lead, but she’s never been interested and even outright rejects them. But no, these men think they’re talking gibberish and continue their creepy romantic pursuit.

Unlike Yang Ying, the fault is not with the actor but with the way the character was written. He’s rational regarding political strategizing, but he’s a fool who only cares about his master. Love is blind.

3) The Cast’s Chemistry

In a drama like New Life Begins , the cast’s chemistry shined throughout the show. Having chemistry with your co-stars is difficult because unless you put people in a room together and act together, you really don’t know what the end result is. In this drama, the cast chemistry, including the leads, did not shine, so it’s not the leading contributing factor to the drama’s popularity.

A Journey to Love Main Actors

Liu shi shi.

Liu Shi Shi is a familiar name in the Chinese entertainment industry. Her roles in classic dramas such as Chinese Paladin 3, Scarlet Heart, and Sound of the Desert have brought her nationwide fame.

She is known for her historical dramas, so Fans and the general public anticipated a Journey to Love because she finally starred in another historical drama after six years (her last historical drama before this one is Lost Love in Times).

She is less active than her peers of similar age, Zhao Li Ying and Yang Mi. Maybe hustling for work all the time isn’t her thing. Liu Shi Shi seems to be more family-oriented and enjoys a slower pace in life, while Zhao Li Ying and Yang Mi are more ambitious in their careers.

There are plenty of actors and actresses in the Chinese entertainment industry. Still, it’s impressive that she, Liu Yi Fei, and Tang Yan can keep their standings as established actresses even though they are not constantly filming projects and/or overworking themselves. Good for them! Life is short, and it’s essential to pause and enjoy life. All three ladies starred in memorable projects so they could choose this career path yet still succeed. They would have fallen off a cliff long ago if they hadn’t had representative works to back them up.

Her Performance in A Journey to Love

People were wondering how this drama was going to be.

Let’s be honest: Liu Shi Shi does not have stellar acting skills. Her acting skills need work (she is not the best actress amongst her peers), but people are probably not as harsh with her because she’s not continuously participating in acting projects. So, it makes the audience miss her and overlook her flaws. She also has a natural, elegant vibe, another factor – let’s not forget her beauty- contributing to her popularity.

She did not wow people with her stone-faced acting skills, which I’m not surprised about. Emotional scenes aren’t her strong suit, nor is expressing emotions with her eyes.

She is better at fight scenes.

Playing this character was the correct decision. She has quite a few fight scenes, which highlight her strengths. I also like that her role as an assassin sharply contrasts her delicate features—something people would not have guessed based on first impressions. 

2024 is a good year for the 85’er actresses. Zhao Li Ying, Tang Yan, and Liu Shi Shi show no signs of slowing down as their TV shows are a hit all in the same year. As a person who watched their dramas growing up, I’m rooting for them. The entertainment industry is harsher on females. Aging actresses compete fiercely with younger female actresses, but Liu Shi Shi continues to prove her star power with A Journey to Love.

Liu Yu Ning

Liu Yu Ning is a rising Chinese actor who has worked with female actresses like Yang Chao Yue , Dilraba, and Zhao Lu Si .

I’m not his biggest fan, to be honest. He’s tall but doesn’t stand out in his acting skills, nor is he particularly handsome compared to his peers. Before you come for me, you must know that looks are a big part of idol dramas.

I don’t see his value as an actor, and I don’t think he will change my mind anytime soon.

 He should focus on his strengths. Liu Yu Ning is an excellent singer and has developed a well-known reputation for himself. You’ll usually see him in many Chinese dramas seeing a song in the OST. He also seems to have a good personality and many industry friends.

He did not stand out in his role as Ning Yuan Zhou, but he was still new to being a male lead when he filmed this. Liu Yu Ning likely wants to grab both career paths as an actor and singer, but he has a better chance of being a successful singer than an actor. He might be on his way because he continues to partner up with famous Chinese actresses.

Liu Yu Ning Criticism

Liu Yu Ning received harsh criticism and hate being in this drama.

In A Journey to Love, Liu Shi Shi is top-billed while Liu Yu Ning is second-billed. This is to be expected with her credentials and several hits under her belt. As a first-billed actress, she should have paid more attention to her characters and scenes, but there were too many scenes focused on Liu Yu Ning. Netizens argued he pushed the writers to add his scenes, but no strong evidence exists.

Those unfamiliar with the Chinese entertainment industry might roll their eyes over these seemingly childish antics, but billing is critical. Actors often fight over billing issues, as seen in Chen Zhe Yuan and Ju Jing Yi ‘s drama, Chinese Paladin 4 .

Final Thoughts – A Journey to Love Drama Review

There have been too many Chinese dramas in which the production team builds up anticipation (I’m looking at you, Immortal Samsara , and Only for Love ) only for the show to be a complete letdown when it airs.

The drama started strong, like My Journey to You (interestingly enough, both dramas have the word ‘journey’ in them), but it lost me in the middle. It was attention-grabbing enough for me to continue watching to the end, but the drama could have been better. I think the team wanted the ending to be memorable, and by choosing a tragic ending, they ensured the audience would remember it more.

For me, A Journey to Love is not one of the best dramas of 2023, but it’s up there. I know this is a controversial statement, as many people believe it is a highlight drama of the year.

This drama isn’t a complete letdown for Liu Shi Shi’s comeback drama. It does somewhat live up to its hype and reaffirms that Liu Shi Shi deserves her nationwide popularity. She picked the correct script for herself this time; if you’re unfamiliar with Liu Yu Ning already, you will get to in this drama. It’s still a watchable drama; you can’t miss it if you like historical dramas .
