japan hiroshima tour

  • Monday to Friday 8:30AM - 5:30PM (PST) Saturday 9:00AM - 3:00PM (PST)

A place often visited in the south of Japan is Hiroshima. The city is often referenced as a symbol and a reminder of peace. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, 71 years after the bomb "Little Boy" was dropped in 1945 during World War II. Hiroshima is the capital city of the Hiroshima Prefecture located on the western region of Japan’s main island Honshu. This city is remembered for its tragic history from the dropping of the atomic bombs. The Hiroshima Peace Park is a memorial park located in the center of the Hiroshima City. It was once a business hub, but after the attack there were talks to convert the land into a park. There is the Children’s Peace Monument, which is known for the story involving Sadako Sasaki. She is a child who died of radiation poisoning, but tried to make 1000 cranes in order for her wish of a world without nuclear weapons to come true. Unfortunately she died before she could finish, but the monument embodies that wish. The A-Bomb Museum also known as the Peace Memorial Museum is one of the main destinations for guests visiting the Hiroshima Peace Park. The features the history of Hiroshima, effects of the atomic bomb, and its aftermath. Guests visiting the museum can explore the various artifacts and displays related to the atomic blast. Across the river from the Peace Park visitors can see the Genbaku Dome or the Atomic Bomb Dome, which is one of the buildings, left standing after the attack. It is recognized by the dome shaped steel frame at the top. Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima Island, is located one hour away from Hiroshima by ferry. It is mostly known for the torii gate that gives the illusion of floating on the water during high tide. The view of the gate is ranked as one of the top three views in Japan. Miyajima is usually a day trip for people to enjoy, but there are ryokans (Japanese traditional inns) available for people to spend the night. It is said that there is a romantic feel at night because of the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. During the day you will have the chance to run into wild deer that are accustomed to people. In 1996, the Itsukushima Shrine was inscribed in the World Heritage Site. This shrine reflects Shinto religious practices because of its blend with nature. The Itsukushima Shrine is best known for its floating torii gate, which is built in the sea. During high tide the gate gives the illusion of floating on the water, but at low tide you can walk up to the gate and see the foundation. This same effect applies to the shrine behind the torii gate. It is considered one of the best temples to visit because of this iconic torii gate. Please see below for tours that include Hiroshima:

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 521 REVIEWS

We had a great tour guide (Miharu). Very sweet and knowledgeable she gave us alot of history but also insight into Japanese culture. It was an amazing experience with so many different places and activities.

The best decision we made was to book a tour through AJT. Our guide, Miharu, did an excellent job and provided information and history before we arrived at each stop on our tour. She kept the itinerary focused and gave us just enough time at each location to get a taste of it. We cannot wait to return to Japan and visit some new places.

This tour was amazing. It allowed us to see so much of Japan and learn facts about the people & culture along the way. Our tour guide and drivers were professional & helpful. Before the tour, AJT helped answer my questions and helped arrange pre-tour transportation from the airport to the hotel. We would recommend to anyone searching for a tour to use AJT.

Loved it all! Wish we would of had more time! Made some great memories and would definitely go again! Size of the group was perfect and made the experience easier!

We gained great appreciation for the culture and history of Japan through the sites we visited. The transportation was comfortable and convenient, and our guide, Trend, was outstanding, knowledgeable and entertaining. The accommodations were terrific, and it was so convenient to have two meals included each day. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and we'd highly recommend it to others!

Hiroshima (L) is the principal city of the Chugoku Region and home to over a million inhabitants.

When the first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the city became known worldwide for this unenviable distinction. The destructive power of the bomb was tremendous and obliterated nearly everything within a two kilometer radius.

After the war, great efforts were taken to rebuild the city. Predictions that the city would be uninhabitable proved false. Destroyed monuments of Hiroshima's historical heritage, like Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden , were reconstructed. In the center of the city a large park was built and given a name that would reflect the aspirations of the re-born city: Peace Memorial Park .

About Hiroshima

Located in western Honshu and just above Shikoku , perhaps the first thing that comes to the minds of many when they hear the word “Hiroshima” is that it was the target of the first atomic bomb in history.

Claiming the lives of over 100,000 civilians, its catastrophic effects can be seen at the Atomic Bomb (Genbaku) Dome , which miraculously survived the bombing and is a World Heritage Site, and the moving Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum ; both serve as moving reminders of the necessity of world peace.

But Hiroshima Prefecture (広島県, Hiroshima-ken ) has so much more to offer – Miyajima island is the magical location of yet another World Heritage Site – Itsukushima Shrine and its “floating” torii gate at high tide, which is classified as one of the Three Views of Japan. Don’t forget to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and the local oysters while you're there.

Hiroshima City

Very popular with overseas customers! The best sightseeing everyone wants to experience in Hiroshima are here !

When you get tired of everyday life, memories of travel suddenly come back. Sometimes even the seemingly trivial things are the most memorable like, “The tea I drank while watching the autumn leaves in that garden was curiously delicious…” and “Wasn’t it amazing when I hit the bullseye the first time I tried kyudo archery?” That’s why we’re introducing you to places that focus on “experiences” where you can look back on your trip and say “I did that.” All of these are experience packages that are popular with tourists from overseas. Experience wabi-sabi in Hiroshima’s most famous garden. Learn about the history of Hiroshima which is known as the “City of Peace” and about its road to reconstruction while thinking about the people who live here. Kyudo archery and trying to make Hiroshima’s signature dish “okonomiyaki” are great experiences for anyone looking for a change of pace. So, why not come and experience all that Hiroshima has to offer?

If night view specialist Motou Marumaru were to guide visitors to the night views of Hiroshima, he would...

Mr. Motou Marumaru, a specialist and leading expert on Japanese night views, will guide you through the unique "nightscapes" of Hiroshima. The three areas introduced—Hiroshima City, Kure, and Onomichi—each have different ways to enjoy nightscapes. In Hiroshima City, the shadows cast by the river are distinctive, and there are also night views where you can enjoy the shadows created by indirect light. In Onomichi, you can enjoy the flow of time, while Kure is characterized by the masculine, sturdy lights of the harbor. This is a nightscape sightseeing tour that will change your concept of how to enjoy night views, as Mr. Marumaru suggests, "Don't just look at nightscapes, feel them with your heart.”

Kintaikyo Bridge

One of the three famous bridges in Japan, a five-storied wooden arch bridge over the clear stream Nishikigawa

One of Japan's three famous bridges, a five-storied wooden arch bridge over the clear stream Nishikigawa. Founded in 1673 by Hiroyoshi Kikkawa, the lord of the Iwakuni domain, the structure of the arched bridge is elaborate and original, and it is said to be impeccable even from the viewpoint of modern bridge engineering. As the name "Nishiki" suggests, you can enjoy the colorful scenery of the four seasons, with cherry blossoms in the spring, night views of cormorant fishing and fireworks in the summer, colored leaves in the fall, and snow makeup in the winter.

Hiroshima is the central city of the Seto Inland Sea area. In August 1945, Hiroshima was devastated when the world's first atomic bomb was dropped on the city. Over the next 20 years, Hiroshima underwent a tremendous recovery and developed into one of the largest cities in Japan. Meanwhile, the Atomic Bomb Dome remains as one of Hiroshima's landmarks, continuing to develop the preciousness of peace throughout the world. We also recommend that you take a short trip out of Hiroshima City to visit the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, including the World Heritage Site of Miyajima. Come with us on a tour to discover the charms of Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Tour Guide - Kazumi M.

Hi everyone. I'm Kazumi. I am a qualified tour guide.I have been guiding Hiroshima since 2010. Through guiding Hiroshima, I can give my guests my knowledge of this area and Japanese culture. At the same time, I can learn their understanding of Japan and the differences between our culture and theirs, which is very interesting. I also believe that meeting with local people is the best way to know the area. I was born and grew up in Hiroshima. I am very happy to give you wonderful time and memories in Hiroshima. I am really looking forward to hearing from you.

Hiroshima Tour Guide - Rika F.

I was born and raised in Hiroshima, and my love for this city led me to switch from nursing to guiding. As a guide, I specialize in Hiroshima city downtown, Miyajima, Futaba no Sato, Onomichi, and Tomo-no-Ura. I also introduce secret photo spots and hidden gems. Using my experience as a nurse, I prioritize meticulous care and bring my natural brightness, aiming to provide a guide experience that allows you to fully enjoy Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Tour Guide - Hugh C.

Hi! Thanks for reviewing my profile. I am Australian, from Sydney originally but my life with Japan and its culture and history spans 30 odd years and I have been a Hiroshima resident for 18 of those 30 years. I joined GoWithGuide just recently but be assured I have led many tours in Hiroshima and more widely throughout metropolitan and regional Japan, sharing conversations about the unique society, its fascinating culture and history. I also have written several tourism blogs for inbound tour companies and also the Hiroshima Prefectural Tourism Bureau. I speak fluent Japanese and I have immersed myself in the experience of living here in modern and traditional culture and spent many years studying martial arts Aikido and Iaido. I also have a strong interest in Buddhist teachings. My Japanese calligraphy work over the years has been received recognition and several awards and commissions both in Japan and elsewhere. I'm looking forward to spending a great experience sharing the culture and history of Hiroshima with you.

Hyogo Tour Guide - Kayoko S.

Hiroshima Tour Guide - Azusa A.

Hello, my name is Azusa Arita. I'm a licensed tour guide in English. I think there is no big difference between what Japan is today and what you see about Japan in manga, except " Naruto." ( Sorry but Ninjya is no longer exist.) Japan is a two -faced society, a society of modern technology and that of tradition. That's why it seems mysterious and difficult to understand. Hiroshima is a good place to experience the both aspects of Japan. Do you know the darkness in which you 'll be a new person, or the special way you can gain the same amount of wisdom written in Buddhist scriptures at one time? Let's go and find the answers to these mysteries in Hiroshima. I'll make sure you have a great time in this tour.

Okayama Tour Guide - Keiji M.

Hello everyone. My name is Keiji living in Okayama. Okayama is located halfway between Hiroshima and Osaka. Nowadays a lot of people are attracted by Naoshima that is a small island famous for Art and Architecture. Okayama is the entrance to the island therefore I often show international guests around Naoshima. Okayama itself has many tourist attractions such as Kurashiki famous for Bikan historical quarter, Korakuen garden, Okayama castle and so on. If you'd like to include Hiroshima or Osaka on your plan, I can show you round them as these cities are in the distance of an hour train ride. I'm an easygoing and extrovert person. I'm always waiting for you to contact me..

Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima

Hiroshima has 2 World Heritage sites: the Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima. Hiroshima is now internationally known as the first city destroyed by the atomic bomb ever used in human warfare. Within the Peace memorial Park at the epicenter of the explosion, you can find war memorial museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome. The shrine is also a brilliant vermilion hall and it creates a sharp contrast against the wooded hills in the background and the blue sky above.

Hiroshima Tour Reviews

Kathleen V.

“ A catered tour from a passionate, kind tour guide ”

Hideo was great for our family of six. He listened to our requests and preferences and curated an itinerary for us that gave us the mix of history, education, and cultural experiences that we were looking for. He provided visual maps, took care of all of our ticket purchases, provided additional details that were informative and interesting to each place and in general was warm, kind and funny. He’s a great tour guide!

Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima - 1

I'm very happy to receive your excellent review. Fortunately we could see the great vermillion torii gate that looks like floating on the sea at high tide. I was amazed that your children were interested in Japanese culture. They played Kurogo who manipulated Bunraku dolls. Bunraku is the traditional Japanese puppet theater. We enjoyed having Okonomiyaki, or a popular local food, for dinner. I wish you and all your family good health, happiness and success in the business.

Full-day Hiroshima/Miyajima tour with Local certified guide

“ Full-day Hiroshima/Miyajima tour ”

Thank you Pancho for an insightful day. We all had a great day learning about this time of history. Thank you also for sharing your personal connection as well. I asked the children what they enjoyed about the day, Master 11 "learning about what happened" Miss 9 "lunch".

Casey E.

Thanks for your feedback that everyone felt something from the tour, that's one of my favorite part being tour guide. Thank you for sharing Master 11 enjoyed learning what happend here and Miss 9 enjoyed lunch! Have a nice trip at next stop too. Thanks again, Pancho

“ Great time ”

Pancho took us around Hiroshima City and Miyajima Island and had a lot of beautiful places to introduce to us. Due to his very good English we were able to talk about everything and got many detailed explanations. Pancho is a super friendly guy and took very good care of our group and gave room for some alternatives. We will definitely book Pancho on our next trip to Hiroshima

Denise u. frank B.

Thanks Denise for your review that we spend great time both Miyajima and Peace park! Yes, we had a lot of conversation during the tour not only the history, typical A-bomb things, but also life style, people's mindset, work and like in Japan and more. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed. Me and my wife loves Weißwein and soda for new lineup for dinner options! Thanks again for joining the tour, looking forward to see you again! Pancho
