Alte Wache (House of Baden wines)

From main guard station to wine bar: the Alte Wache, built in 1733 as part of military reinforcements, is today the House of Baden Wines.

The romantic-style, historic listed building on the Münsterplatz is one of the few remaining 18th-century buildings in Freiburg, left nearly unscathed from the bombings of the Second World War. Once the quarters of the Austrian guard, the building now offers visitors a chance to discover the fascinating variety of regional Baden wines.

Did you know that Baden boasts some 15,000 hectares of vineyards, making it Germany’s third-largest wine-growing region? The Mediterranean climate between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains, good soil and a firmly established, generations-old wine tradition are the ideal prerequisites for top-quality wines.

After a tour of Freiburg’s Old Town, come explore the wines of Baden on the Münsterplatz. Enjoy the splendid historic backdrop of the Alte Wache’s terrace and the view of the city’s most emblematic landmark, the Cathedral, over a glass of Freiburg Grauburgunder wine.

On our wine hike up Freiburg's Schlossberg, you can expect not only excellent wine, but also a breathtaking panoramic view over Freiburg and the idyllic surroundings in the "Tuscany of Germany".

Explore the picturesque Schlossberg with us while our experienced guides tell you exciting facts about viticulture and the wines on offer. In collaboration with the Lena Flurbacher winery from Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl - one of the warmest and most beautiful places in Germany in the middle of an extinct volcano - we will taste five exquisite wines that will beguile the senses and take us on an enjoyable journey.

This wine hike combines the pleasures of wine with the fascination of nature and facts about the Schlossberg - and offers an unforgettable experience! As we hike leisurely across the slopes of the Schlossberg, an impressive view opens up before us: the beauty of the Rhine Graben, the striking Kaiserstuhl and the majestic Vosges mountains will enchant us.

As Freiburg's Schlossberg is located right on the edge of Freiburg's old town and city center, the wine hike starts in Freiburg's city center and ends at a different point in Freiburg's city center (old town). The start and end points are only a 3-minute walk away.

Meeting point: In Freiburg city center at the entrance to the pedestrian bridge "Karlssteg", which leads from Karlsplatz to the Stadtgarten. The meeting point is at the bridge entrance on Karlsplatz, right next to the motorcycle parking lot. Our guides can be recognized by their labelled outerwear.
