American Immigration

Family Visitor Visa

If you have family in the US, you may wish to visit them from time to time. Unless you are a US citizen, you will need to secure a US visa in order to do so. In order to enter the US to visit family, you will need to generally apply for a B-1 visa or B-2 visa , both of which are non-immigrant visas which allow you to enter the US temporarily for personal or business reasons. While in the US on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa, you will be able to visit family and friends, take part in tourist activities, and temporarily stay in the US. You will not be allowed to take part in work or study in the US on this visa.

In some cases, you may not need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to visit family in the US. If you are the spouse or child of a US visa holder, including a J-1 or F-1 visa holder , for example, you may not need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa or you may need a different visa to enter the US. If you have a spouse or parents in the US on many visas, you may be able to secure a visa that allows you to live with your family in the US.

If you wish to visit your family for longer than just a few months, you may want to arrange for a family-sponsored US immigration visa. If some of your family members are US citizens and are willing to sponsor you, you may be able to apply for a US green card through your family’s sponsorship. Having a green card will allow you to travel more freely to the US and will allow you to live and work in the US permanently, so that you can be closer to your family.

Family of U.S. Citizens

This page describes how you (a U.S. citizen) may petition for certain family members to receive either a Green Card, a fiancé(e) visa or a K-3/K-4 visa based on your relationship. (If your relative wishes to naturalize or obtain proof of citizenship, see the Citizenship section of our website.)

To petition for a family member to receive a Green Card (permanent residence), begin by filing Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative . This form establishes the family relationship that exists between you and your relative. Sometimes the I-130 can be filed together with an application for permanent residence, officially known as Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . This is discussed below.

  • If your relative is already in the United States, they may apply to adjust status to become a Green Card holder (lawful permanent resident) after a visa number becomes available using Form I-485.
  • If your relative is outside the United States, your petition will be sent to the National Visa Center (NVC). The NVC will forward your petition to the appropriate U.S. consulate when a visa becomes available and your relative will be notified about how to proceed. This process is referred to as “consular processing.”
  • Your family member’s preference category will determine how long they will have to wait for an immigrant visa number. Once you have filed a petition, you can check its progress the My Case Status page. For visa availability information, see the Visa Bulletin page on the U.S. Department of State website.

For more information on becoming a Green Card holder, see the Adjustment of Status for processing within the United States and Consular Processing page for processing overseas. For more information on Green Cards, see the Green Card section.

NOTE : A visa petition (Form I-130 or Form I-129F) is only used to demonstrate a qualifying relationship. An approved petition DOES NOT grant any benefit, it simply creates a place in line for visa processing.

If you or a member of your family is in the U.S. military, special conditions may apply. See the Military section of the website.

Other family visitors to the u.s. (b-1/b-2 visitors).

Family members who are not the children or spouse of the F-1 /J-1 must apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to visit the U.S. Family members from certain countries may be eligible to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without obtaining a B-1/B-2 visa through the U.S. Department of State Visa Waiver Program .

Documents Needed to Apply for B-1/B-2 Visa

The following documents are required to apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa:

  • Valid passport
  • Photographs
  • Visa application fee
  • Visa application forms

Additional Recommended Documents

To help strengthen your B-1/B-2 visa application, we recommend that you provide additional documents to clarify that the visit is temporary and/or is for a specific occasion (e.g., graduation ceremony), and that the visitor will be supported financially while visiting the U.S. Most importantly, the additional documents should show proof of ties to the home country to prove that the visitor does not intend to immigrate to the U.S. Proof of ties to the home country may include economic, social, family, or other commitments showing that the visitor intends to return home after a temporary stay in the U.S. Examples include:

  • Proof of employment – a letter from the employer indicating that this individual is currently employed and taking time off, but is due back at their job on a specific date.
  • Proof of property ownership – house, apartment, or a business.
  • Proof of contact with other family members in the home country.
  • Proof of finances – bank statement, stocks, property.
  • A formal letter of invitation (written by you as the F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor) indicating the specific reason for the visit (e.g., graduation, wedding, illness, birth of a child). The letter should include information about the purpose of travel and planned itinerary or schedule. It may also include information about your U.S. immigration status as an F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor. If you are inviting family members to attend your graduation ceremony, you can also request a special letter of invitation from the University of Michigan. Please refer to Preparing for Commencement: International Students for details. Note: it can take up to two business days for the University to process a letter of invitation. The Letter of Invitation will be emailed to the graduate, who can then forward it to her or his parents for use in documenting their visa request.

For more information about B-1/B-2 visa denials, refer to the U.S. Department of State Visitor Visas .

Reviews of USA Family Tours

The 7-day Southwest Highlights tour was amazing! Alex and Amber were terrific guides that helped to give us options to make the most of our time at each tour stop. They also took care of setting up camp most days and prepared great meals throughout the trip. The trip was well organized, and we stopped often during the drive. I recommend this tour to people who want an active vacation, checking a number of National Parks off their list, but don't want to do all of the research needed to make it happen.
Most Amazing Family Vacation Ever! The 7-day private tour of the Southwest National Parks (hotel version) Hard to put into words but this was the perfect way for our family to experience the dramatic sites and cultural experiences of the southwest National Parks! We had the most amazing tour guide (Thanks Marie!) and the agenda was the right balance of keeping us engaged while covering so much ground. Each National Park had its own unique and wonderful qualities and this 7-day tour gave us just enough time to soak up the natural beauty. Also, there are hikes and tours for all ages (we let the boys take on the more difficult hikes while Mom and Dad took the more accessible routes. The pick up and drop off in Las Vegas was very convenient and allowed us just enough time to enjoy a few nights in Las Vegas. Would HIGHLY recommend!
Overall the tour was very enjoyable. The scenery was beautiful. Though the Vail stop was a disappointment as most shops and eateries closed. Cruise Director was very informative and very knowledgeable of the places. Captain Ron was most helpful getting us on and off the bus. Also a very good driver.

No More Choosing between Beaches and Mountains

If you want to spend some time on the beach, head to Florida or California. If you prefer snow sports and winter fun, go north to New York or Colorado. And if you’re looking for something more general with everything like hiking and beauty, head west!

The Food Is Mouth-watering

You’ll find some of the best food in the world in the United States. From New York City’s famous pizza to California’s fresh seafood, there are plenty of amazing restaurants to choose from.

You can also try some of America’s favorite fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King.

Worth Exploring Small Cities

If you’re looking for a family vacation that’s different from the norm, consider visiting one of America’s smaller cities. You’ll get to experience all the charm and culture of a big city without any of the crowds or traffic.

For instance, the small town of Manitowish Waters in Wisconsin offers plenty of family fun activities for kids and adults alike. You can go swimming at Lake Michigan or rent a canoe or kayak from one of the area’s many rental shops.

Memorable Road Trips

The United States has one of the best roads for road trips, and if you want the best exploring experience, there is no better way to hit the road than on a bike. You can see some of the most beautiful landscapes and towns in America on a road trip, and it’s a great way to bond with your family.

You can stop at historical sites like Gettysburg or Independence Hall in Philadelphia; visit national parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, and Everglades National Park; or just drive along Highway 1 through California’s Big Sur coast. You can also visit Bixby Bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway and stop for calming waves at Mission Beach.

Perfect Mix of Art, History, & Nature

The United States of America is a country with a rich history and the beauty of the natural world. It’s also home to some of the most famous museums in the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The USA is also home to some of the most iconic landmarks in history, including the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Independence Hall.

family visit usa

The best time to visit the USA with kids is during the spring and autumn. During this season, there are more activities available and it’s generally more pleasant than other times of the year.

In addition, the cost of hotels and restaurants is much lower compared to the tourist season (July through August). Besides, there will be fewer visitors and fewer crowds to deal with.

The United States has versatile weather, and the temperature keeps changing every month. The most extreme temperatures are usually experienced in July and August when heat waves are prevalent. In these months, it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius).

The lowest temperature you can experience in the USA starts in December and keeps going down till February with cool winds blowing at night. Also, it may not reach above 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 Celsius) during the day. Snowfall can be expected during these months as well.

family visit usa

The perfect length of time to spend in the USA actually depends on you. If you’re looking for a quick trip, maybe three or four days will do it. However, to explore everything in detail, you might need a week or two.

The best part about spending time in the United States? There are so many options! You can visit one city or travel around the country and see everything from coast to coast.

So, there’s no right answer when it comes to how long you should stay – it’s all up to your personal preference!

National Air and Space Museum

Take your kids to the National Air and Space Museum; they’ll love all the exhibits there. You can find it at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue SW. The best part is that you can enter the museum for free, which is a plus when you’re traveling with kids.

The museum has more than 21 galleries that cover everything from aviation history to space exploration. There are also interactive exhibits where kids can learn about flying by playing with tools that have been used by real pilots in the past.

You’ll also find special events at this museum, especially on holidays. An event like Santa’s arrival on Christmas is the most famous one.

American Museum of Natural History

family visit usa

This museum was created in 1874 and is one of the best city landmarks in New York. It’s one of the most visited museums in the world, and it’s no wonder why, since there are more than 34 million artifacts on display here, including dinosaur bones, meteorites, and fossils.

The museum also has a planetarium with shows about outer space every day at noon and 3 pm If you’re looking for something to do with kids that’s educational but not too stuffy or boring, this is a great option for the best family vacations!

Yellowstone National Park

family visit usa

Despite being an active volcano and one of the world’s largest underground volcanoes, this park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the USA. It is known for its geothermal features and wildlife, but there are plenty of other things to do with kids here that don’t involve hiking or camping.

There are plenty of museums and exhibits at Yellowstone National Park that can be enjoyed by kids. The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center has exhibits about how geysers work and how they were discovered by pioneers. The Yellowstone Association Research Library has several books that kids can read while they’re waiting for their parents to finish looking at exhibits.

If you’re looking for something more active, there are many trails across Yellowstone National Park where you can hike or bike with your children. Many of these trails are also wheelchair accessible.

Grand Canyon National Park

family visit usa

A fun fact about the Grand Canyon is that it can be seen from space and is also a popular spot among tourists for pictures and picnics. You can hike down into it or take a helicopter ride over it; either way, it will give you an amazing view.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try going rafting down one of its tributaries, like the Colorado River or Little Colorado River. You’ll see tons of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, deer, and squirrels, along with Native American rock art dating back thousands of years!

Disney World

family visit usa

Disney World is a must for any family vacation. The park offers countless activities and attractions, from rides to shows to character meet-and-greets.

Disney World has tons of different parks, including Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. You can stay at one park or visit all four! The resort is located in between two theme parks (Epcot and Hollywood Studios), so it’s easy for you to visit either one without having to go far.

If you have some time to spare, visit Blizzard Beach Water Park or Disney Springs, as they are only five to ten minutes away. On the other hand, if you want a relaxing stay away from the hustle and bustle of the parks, try booking one of the villas at this resort. They feature private pools and hot tubs with views of wildlife preserves!

You’ll love their selection of wine too!

Carnitas Lonja

San antonio, texas.

family visit usa

This joint is known for its authentic Mexican food and lively atmosphere. The menu offers everything from tacos to enchiladas, but the real draw here is the carnitas: crispy pork that’s slow-cooked in its own fat until it’s just right. It’s served with rice and beans, which are also made from scratch at this restaurant.

If that is not enough, check out their children’s menu for special dishes that kids love the most. So, if you’re looking for a place where everyone can get something they love, including your little ones, Carnitas Lonja in San Antonio, Texas is worth checking out.

The first stop on your tour should be the Brandywine River Museum of Art. This museum has several exhibits that include works by artists such as Picasso and Monet. There are also interactive exhibits that allow visitors to create their art using different mediums.

After spending some time at the museum, head over to the Nemours Mansion & Gardens, where you can take in stunning views of the Brandywine River while enjoying breathtaking gardens full of flowers and trees. There’s even an outdoor maze for kids who want something extra fun!

Next up is lunch at one of Wilmington’s many restaurants. One option is The Millworks on Market Street, which offers delicious food at reasonable prices. Plus, they have an awesome view.

If you’re not up for driving yourself, or if you just want to see more than just one part of the country during your vacation, there are plenty of ways to get from place to place!

Here are some of our favorite ways to travel around:

The trains are great because they go everywhere and they’re cheap! You can get on one in New York City and end up in San Francisco without having to deal with any traffic or tolls.

Buses are another great option if you want to save money on transportation while still getting where you need to go quickly and easily. Some buses even have Wi-Fi so you can stay connected while traveling!

Planes are expensive but worth it if your destination isn’t too far from where you started (like Los Angeles).

Renting a Car

Take a road trip ! The best way to see all of America is by car, so if you have time in your schedule, consider renting one and hitting the road. You’ll be able to stop wherever you want and see whatever catches your eye.

If neither of these options sounds appealing, consider hiring a tour guide who will take care of all your transportation needs while showing you around their favorite spots along the way (and saving money on gas!).

If you are looking for a direct flight, many airlines offer this option. You can also take a train, bus, or car if you want something more adventurous, depending on your country.

If you are traveling by plane, several airports in America serve domestic flights as well as international ones. These include JFK International Airport in New York City, LaGuardia Airport in Queens, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

There are also large airports such as the Dawson Community Airport, which serves domestic flights only, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which serves both domestic and international flights.

If you prefer taking public transportation instead of driving yourself, then consider taking Amtrak or Greyhound buses instead since both companies offer services throughout most states within America, including Alaska and Hawaii too! You can even take Amtrak from Canada to New York.

Staying safe in the USA when visiting with kids is a top priority for families. Every parent wants to protect their children from harm when traveling abroad, but did you know there are some things you can do to curtail your risk of facing problems on vacation? Here are some worth-noting points for you to add to your checklist, and make sure you mark them too!

Family ID Bracelets

First and foremost, we recommend using family ID bracelets. These silicone bracelets can contain important information about your family members, including their names, allergies, blood type, and even the phone numbers of their parents or guardians.

If someone finds one of your children who has lost their way, they can use this information to find out who they belong to so they can be returned safely. You can buy them online, and they usually come in a pack with different band sizes.

So, whether you’re taking a road trip, visiting an amusement park, or attending a sporting event, using ID bracelets for the whole family can help keep your children safe.

AirTags or Tiles

AirTags are great because they help keep your family safe. Simply attach them to the outside of your child’s backpack and track that backpack’s location at all times. So, if your children wander off or leave their backpacks behind, you’ll know right away rather than having to get worried.

Tiles or AirTags are easy to attach to your child’s clothing as well. They can be engraved with your child’s name and/or phone number, so you don’t lose track of them in a crowded place. Besides, the batteries last almost a year.

Make a Family Safety Code Word

We all know that kids are frequently oblivious to their surroundings. But, in a situation where you need to communicate quickly and discreetly with your children, having a family password can help remedy that problem.

Use something like an alligator or avocado to alert your children to dangerous conditions. For instance, “We are in an alligator situation” is a phrase your children should be familiar with and know how to respond to.

On hearing this word or phrase, your children should know to respond quietly, leave everything they are up to, and follow what you say.

Use this term to let your child know that if they feel something is dangerous or if they see something that worries them, you want them to tell you about it.

When your child notices something that may be dangerous, they can tap you on the shoulder and use the word “alligator” to get your full attention.

Travel Vaccines

Much like you need all the important paperwork, it is also a good idea to make sure your children are up to date on any travel vaccines. The main ones you need are Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever.

You should always carry a certificate proving that you have had the proper vaccines. When you are traveling outside of your home country, it’s a good idea to double-check with your physician or local travel clinic if you need any booster shots.

First Aid Kits

If you’re traveling with kids, it’s important to have a first aid kit on hand. You never know when someone might need a bandage or an antibiotic. Make sure that the kit contains all the essentials: bandages in various sizes, gauze pads, and rolls; antiseptic wipes and ointments; antibiotic ointment packets; a thermometer (to check for fever); antihistamine tablets (for insect bites); and pain reliever tablets (for headaches).

Take a Family Photo

When you’re traveling with your kids, it can be hard to remember everything you need to do. That’s why we recommend taking a photo of your whole family at the start of each day before you leave.

The picture will remind you of what everyone looks like and help you identify them if they get lost. You can also use it as a reference if someone asks if they are missing anyone. Or if a police officer needs to see identification for all members of your family.

Traveler’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Caught in the delightful dilemma of picking the perfect August family destination?

San Francisco is where the hills echo with the clang of cable cars, and the scent of fresh sourdough fills the air.

Many of my family’s weekends often revolve around strolling Pier 39 or gazing at the Golden Gate.

San Fran’s urban charm is unmatched.

But when we crave sandy shores and wild waves, the Outer Banks in North Carolina calls to us.

It’s a completely different scene, more laid back and close to nature.

There’s nothing quite like watching wild horses on the beach or casting a fishing line with the kids.

Then there’s Aspen, Colorado.

It’s where the mountains meet the sky, and the world seems to stand still.

Our ski trips there are legendary, and it’s like living in a snow globe.

Each destination has its own heartbeat.

Urban vibes in San Francisco, beachy ease in Outer Banks, or mountain majesty in Aspen—whatever your family’s mood, these places have you covered.

The 15 Best U.S. Resorts for Families, According to T+L Readers

From glamping near national parks, to beachfront villas, to over-the-top Disney resorts, these are the best family-friendly stays across the U.S.

Chelsee Lowe is a Los Angeles-based writer with an obsession with good eats and interesting stories. She regularly contributes to Travel + Leisure , TravelAge West , Ventura Blvd , and L.A. Parent , writing about food, family travel, and more.

Preston Mack/Walt Disney World

Traveling as a family is both gratifying and inherently challenging, a stacking puzzle of personalities and preferences you hope to keep stable no matter what bumps the table. In my decade as a parent who regularly hits the road, my most significant takeaways from family travel are these: First, you absolutely must remain flexible, ready to postpone or abandon a plan if someone is grouchy, hungry, or just too tired to manage. And second, no matter where you are going, everyone must have literal (and often metaphorical) space to be themselves.

For kids, it’s usually the literal space that’s required. I have never met a young person who does well in a confined space, unless that space is, say, an indoor trampoline park. For my family, that means our landing place needs a nearby playground or an easily accessed beach, lake, or swath of woods. And as I listed out the winning properties below, I felt confirmed in the above musts, as every single one checks this box in its own way. Here’s hoping the following resorts help you book your next storm-free family trip – summer is just around the corner, believe it or not.

Larsmont Cottages on Lake Superior, Two Harbors, Minnesota

Larsmont Cottages

It turns out families needn’t fly to Finland for the ultimate lake vacation. A wood-fired Finnish sauna sits near the shore of Lake Superior at this resort , and guests are encouraged to do what the Finns do – follow your sauna session with a plunge in the cold waters just outside. Guided kayak, canoe, and paddle board experiences are among other ways families can get on the lake here.

The Winnetu Oceanside Resort, Edgartown, Massachusetts

The Winnetu Oceanside Resort

A family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard is bucket-list stuff, and this is the resort to stay at. Attend a clambake in the summer, then follow the private path to South Beach for some time in the sand. And don’t miss the chance to take a water taxi ride in Katama Bay – it’ll drop you in adorable downtown Edgartown, where you can shop for souvenirs, snacks, and sweets.

The Woodlands Resort, The Woodlands, Texas

The Woodlands

Just 30 miles from Houston, this resort in the Curio Collection by Hilton boasts an incredible onsite water park. Families can spend hours at Forest Oasis Water Park and Lazy River , a year-round spot with waterslides, a zero-entry sprayground, and an activity pool with underwater music and more. Pools are heated in winter and day passes are available.

Capitol Reef Resort, Torrey, Utah

Capitol Reef Resort

This resort is right outside the bounds of Utah's glorious Capitol Reef National Park, so you’ll have incredible views of (and easy access to) the park’s unique and towering sandstone structures. Cabins and suites are available, but we’d opt for a stay in a tent or a Conestoga wagon – these types of accommodations are more likely to help you enjoy your one-of-a-kind surroundings.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Oahu, Hawaii

With villas that can accommodate up to 12 guests and incredible programming for all ages, Aulani is designed for happy multigenerational travel – its Ko Olina waterfront location doesn’t hurt either. Snorkel in crystalline Hawaiian waters (or in the resort’s private lagoon), play in the Keiki Cove Splash Zone, or spend hours cruising in Waikolohe Stream, Aulani’s answer to a lazy river with inner tubes for all, cool caverns, and spots with rushing water. Afterwards, snack on a Mickey-shaped Spam musubi, perhaps the perfect Disney/Hawaii mashup.

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, Oahu, Hawaii

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort

Set on Waikiki Beach and incredibly close to Ala Moana and Fort DeRussy beaches, Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort is situated perfectly for families who want to explore the best stretches of sand in the island's most populous district. Consider a room with a view of Diamond Head, the famous ( and hikable ) volcanic cone just in the distance, and don’t miss nightly live Hawaiian music by local performers or a wood-carving session with a master of the craft.

South Seas Island Resort, Captiva, Florida

South Seas Island Resort

Though currently undergoing significant renovations due to damage from Hurricane Ian, South Seas Island Resort aims to reopen later this year. Along with hotel accommodations and multi-room condos, the resort will offer brand new amenities, from a sparkling pool and 12-hole short golf course to reimagined versions of its beloved candy shop and casual beachside eatery.

Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Paul Joyner Photo

A luxury vacation in a safari tent is the signature offering by Under Canvas, a brand that debuted in 2012.  Set near the entrance of the eponymous park, Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains makes for an ideal homebase for park explorers while also offering a dense list of outdoor programming, from guided hikes and trivia or movie nights to yoga sessions and live music. Note that it is a seasonal property, generally open from spring to late November.

Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, Anaheim, California

Walt Disney World

A superb replica of American parkitecture design, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa feels both rustic and luxurious, and it offers all the perks family travelers need. We love its grand, lodge-like lobby, where a piano player often regales crowds with Disney tunes. Easy entry to Disneyland Resort parks is an incredible perk for overnight guests, but so is the pool deck, where three pools and a 90-foot water slide around a faux redwood tree stump entertain kids of all ages. Parents, try a cocktail from the poolside GCH Craftsman Bar , too.

Disney's Vero Beach Resort, Vero Beach, Florida

Golfers, water-sport enthusiasts, and folks who love to fish have long adored Vero Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast, and if you’re heading to the destination with kids, Disney's Vero Beach Resort is the place to stay. Enjoy pristine sands right off the property, or the giant pool with a two-story, pirate-themed water slide. There’s also an on-site 9-hole mini golf course and a bookable loggerhead turtle conservation outing.

Whiteface Lodge, Lake Placid, New York

Whiteface Lodge

Six million acres of Adirondack forest is your backyard at Whiteface Lodge , a luxury lodge on upstate New York’s Lake Placid. Fantastic all year round, lodge guests can hike, boat, bike ride, and rock climb in the warmer months. In winter, all imaginable snow sports are possible, including downhill skiing, dog sledding, and toboggan-chute riding. There’s also a catch-and-release fishing pond on site and a 56-seat movie theater that plays three films a day.

Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island is a true respite with its laid-back vibe, family-friendly beaches, and beautiful natural surroundings. This Disney resort nods to island history, designed with the aesthetic of a 1940s hunting and fishing lodge front of mind. Guests here have easy access to miles of sandy beaches and bike trails, three pools and a water slide, plus campsite storytelling sessions, fishing and crabbing excursions, and outdoor movie nights.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Lake Buena Vista, Florida

One of many Walt Disney World Resort accommodation options, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge shines with a surreal sense of place – that is, its recreation of the African savannah. More than 200 live animals roam these grounds, from flamingos to giraffes, and programming guided by expert naturalists is available to help young animal enthusiasts learn about the fauna. Complimentary transportation to the theme park is a convenient inclusion, too.

Disney's Beach Club Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida

For a completely different vibe in the same location, families love Disney's Beach Club Resort , designed with coastal New England in mind. The pool deck, known as Stormalong Bay, is essentially a three-acre onsite waterpark that includes a life-size shipwreck to play around, three pools, and a lazy river. And you’re a short walk to the Disney Skyliner gondola system, which can whisk you to and from the theme parks via air.

Under Canvas Moab, Moab, Utah

Under Canvas

Another winning location from Under Canvas, this one is set seven miles outside Arches National Park , which is best known for its improbable sandstone arch formations. Families love the safari-inspired lodging here, complete with luxurious West Elm furnishings, private bathrooms, and access to communal grills and a lobby tent with grab-and-go snacks. Guided hiking, rafting, and canyoneering excursions can be booked, too. Note that this is a seasonal property, generally open late winter to mid fall.

Best places to visit in august 2024.

Late summer is generally marked by hot days and the desire to squeeze in one more vacation. That's why U.S. News evaluated attractions, events and weather (among other factors) to bring you this list of the best places to visit in August. From mountain reprieves to lake getaways , there's a destination on this ranking for every traveler to enjoy. Vote below to help determine next year's list.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Vancouver, canada, masai mara national reserve, kluane national park and reserve, outer banks, white mountains, coeur d'alene.

family visit usa

Fiji is an excellent place to visit in August. Although this month falls within Fiji's cooler, drier season, daytime temperatures commonly sit in the low 80s, so you can spend the bulk of your vacation sunbathing on its white sand beaches and swimming in its vibrant blue water. Plus, several of the country's 333 islands – including Taveuni, the Mamanucas and the Yasawas – offer ample opportunities for water sports like surfing and scuba diving. The rich Fiji culture also features all kinds of unique traditions, such as kava and firewalking ceremonies.

family visit usa

When it comes to summer vacations, why settle for one lake when you can visit two? Interlaken – a scenic Swiss town whose name means between lakes – is set in an idyllic spot between the dazzling lakes Thun and Brienz and surrounded by mountains. August temperatures in the mid-70s will allow you to take in the area's natural beauty while hiking, boating or paragliding, though you'll want to pack some rain gear for occasional wet weather. What's more, if you plan your visit around Aug. 1, you'll be able to participate in the area's Swiss National Day celebration, which includes bonfires, a folk festival and a parade.

family visit usa

While a case can be made for a quieter shoulder-season trip, Lake Como is in its prime at the height of summer. Visiting during the high season may mean more tourists and higher room rates, but you'll be able to take in the lakeside towns, villas and beaches at their most lustrous. Take a boat cruise across the lake to stroll through the blooming gardens of iconic villas like Villa Balbianello. Sample peak produce at open-air markets or freshly caught fish in the many dining venues with a view. Or simply see and be seen on one of the area's beaches or lakeside pools.

family visit usa

A trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in August will ensure almost all trails will be accessible and the weather will be pleasant, so you'll have every opportunity to take in the park's mountainous beauty. Wildflowers dot the meadows and bighorn sheep are commonly seen this time of year, too. Popular hikes and vistas become busy this time of year, and you'll need to reserve a timed entry permit available on July 1, but you can easily find quieter options among the park's 355 miles of trails. Combat the crowds by arriving early in the day and taking the park's shuttles instead of driving.

family visit usa

Vancouver, the most populous city in British Columbia, is a vibrant destination that offers something for all visitors. As one of the driest, warmest months (think: temperatures in the low 70s), August is a superb time to take it all in. Thrill-seekers can cross the Capilano Suspension Bridge or hike the grueling Grouse Grind (both just north of the city), while those who prefer a more leisurely outdoor experience can take a Vancouver Harbour cruise or relax on some of the city's beaches. Vancouver Pride Festival also takes place early in the month and features a parade and performances to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

family visit usa

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has a lot to offer beyond its beaches, including a myth-laden history, but a visit during one of the hottest months of the year will make its sandy stretches look pretty enticing. Sun seekers can bask under cloudless skies, and when the temperatures get too warm (think: 90 degree averages), visitors can cool off by Jet Skiing, swimming and paddleboarding. Later, beach bums and water lovers alike will want to treat themselves to some fresh Cypriot cuisine paired with local wine (including some of the oldest named wine in the world).

family visit usa

August brings some of the warmest temperatures of the year to Montenegro, as well as throngs of travelers looking to bask on this Balkan country's beaches. Montengro's coastline on the Adriatic Sea and its inlets boasts scenic towns like Budva and Kotor, where you'll find charming old towns and blissful stretches of sand. To cool off and escape the crowds, retreat to the country's mountainous interior to hike in destinations like Durmitor National Park and Biogradska Gora National Park.

family visit usa

Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa's most frequented safari destinations , especially in August when wildlife viewing opportunities are superb. August is usually a great time to catch the Great Migration, an annual journey by more than 2 million wildebeest, zebras and other animals from Tanzania's Serengeti National Park into Masai Mara. What's more, the reserve is a year-round haven for additional animal species, including the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), earning it a reputation as one of Africa's most diverse areas.

family visit usa

Head to Kluane National Park and Reserve in Canada's Yukon region if you want to enjoy an unconventional summer vacation. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll discover the world's largest nonpolar icefield and Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan. Sign up for a flightseeing tour to view Kluane's glaciers from the air or take advantage of the mild, incredibly long summer days by exploring the park on foot. A boat ride around Kathleen Lake or a rafting excursion down the Alsek River are also fun ways to admire your surroundings.

family visit usa

America's Finest City is warm and dry in August, giving you ample opportunities to soak up some sun. If you're eager to spend time at the beach, you'll find 70 miles of coastline  ideal for everything from surfing to swimming to paddleboarding. Away from the shore, there's Balboa Park, where you can admire beautiful architecture, check out various museums and explore the world-renowned San Diego Zoo . Plus, San Diego is home to an exceptional dining scene and a plethora of live music venues to round out your trip.

family visit usa

Summer is peak season in this Croatian town, so you'll likely rub elbows with other travelers during an August visit. However, Rovinj's beauty will more than make up for the influx of tourists. In August, you can comfortably walk along the car-free cobblestone streets of Rovinj's Old Town thanks to daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s. This month is also a great time to explore Grisia Street, which hosts an open-air art exhibition in August. If you need a break from the town's throngs of people, take a day trip to one of 14 nearby islands.

family visit usa

Plan an Outer Banks vacation in August to enjoy toasty beach weather (think: average highs in the mid-80s) and fun festivals like the Outer Banks Watermelon Festival and the Outer Banks Pirate Festival. These North Carolina barrier islands are ideal for all kinds of beach activities, including sailing, surfing and sunbathing. Plus, some of them are rich in history. Head to Kill Devil Hills to visit Wright Brothers National Memorial (where the famous pilots took their first flight), or venture to Roanoke Island to check out Roanoke Island Festival Park's exhibits about what life was like in the 16th century.

family visit usa

Trade your ski poles for a hiking stick and visit New Hampshire's White Mountains in summertime, when the area's gorges, bike trails and more than 100 waterfalls are at their most lush. Action-seekers can climb Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, where they'll be rewarded with views of five states. Meanwhile, those looking for a more easygoing summer afternoon can go for a scenic drive or take in the views with a cocktail in hand on the terrace of Omni Mount Washington Resort . With August averages in the 60s and 70s, the weather will be ripe for any outdoor adventure.

family visit usa

Curacao is the perfect destination for those seeking a late summer Caribbean getaway thanks to its location outside the hurricane belt. Sustained daytime temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s mean you'll likely spend most of your vacation lounging on the beach or swimming past marine life, coral reefs and shipwrecks while scuba diving. But the charming, colorful Dutch colonial architecture found in the UNESCO-certified capital – Willemstad – is worth exploring, too. Plus, with fewer mega resorts and more boutique resorts and bed-and-breakfast establishments, Curacao has a more relaxed feel than other Caribbean destinations and is a great place to reset.

family visit usa

With festivals, prime weather and outdoor activities galore, Coeur d'Alene is the perfect destination for a summer send-off. This northern Idaho city boasts easily accessible golf courses (including one with a unique floating green), bike paths and parks, while its eponymous 26-mile lake is ideal for boating and fishing come August. The city ushers in the month with popular events like the Coeur d'Alene Street Fair and Taste of Coeur d'Alene, which showcase local shops, breweries and crafts. Coeur d'Alene also caters to a variety of budgets, with accommodation options ranging from campsites to cabins to amenity-filled resorts.

Donald Trump 's wife and former First Lady Melania Trump did not accompany him on his flight to the first presidential debate with President Joe Biden , CNN reported.

While Trump has brought an entourage to Atlanta where CNN is hosting a historic debate , it is unclear if any of his family members are among the gaggle. Melania Trump's former chief of staff told NBC News  that she it would be surprising if the former first lady did not attend the debate.

Trump's sons made a number of appearances at another de-facto campaign stop for Trump: the New York criminal trial where the former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a hush money payment issued to porn star Stormy Daniels .

The Department of State has suspended visa services in Haiti

The information below outlines options Haitian nationals seeking U.S. visas may consider.

Immigrant Visas

Immigrant visas are for foreign nationals who intend to live and/or work permanently in the United States.  In most cases, a relative or employer sponsors the individual by filing a petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  Further information on immigrant visas can be found here:  https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate.html .

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince has suspended routine immigrant visa appointments until further notice. Immigrant visa applicants who can travel to another U.S. embassy or consulate that processes immigrant visas and remain in that country for the duration of their visa processing should consider requesting the transfer of their case from U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince using the instructions below:

If the case is at U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince :   Applicants may contact a new U.S. embassy or consulate in writing to request the transfer of their immigrant visa case.  Applicants can find the contact information for Immigrant Visa Units at U.S. embassies and consulates at https://usembassy.gov/ .  The applicant should provide evidence, if possible, of their presence in the country to which they would like their case to be transferred, or documentation of their ability to enter and remain in that country for the duration of the immigrant visa process.

If the Case is Pending at the National Visa Center (NVC):   Applicants may contact NVC at https://nvc.state.gov/inquiry to request a transfer to another immigrant visa processing post.  Applicants should be prepared to provide evidence of the ability to enter and remain in the requested country for the duration of the process.

Applicants may also request NVC expedite their case at the new consular section by emailing [email protected] and providing the specific reason for their expedite request.  Please be aware expedited case processing does not apply to family preference visa categories where a case is not current.

The Department of State continues to communicate with U.S. adoptive families in the intercountry adoption process and adoption service providers regarding recent developments in Haiti, and we are assessing the situation as it unfolds.  The Department is responding to individual inquiries from Adoption Service Providers and prospective adoptive parents.

We are working as quickly as possible to identify options for continued case processing and assisted departure for Haitian children in the intercountry adoption process, while meeting U.S. laws, regulations, and our Hague  Convention obligations as well as minimizing the risk of Haitian children coming to the United States with no clear path to legal status .

We are also working with Haiti’s child welfare authority, the Institut du Bien-Être Social et de Recherches (IBESR), to assist Haitian adoptive children in obtaining exit permissions, while we work on solutions at other stages of the intercountry adoption process.

Prospective adoptive parents should remain in regular contact with their adoption service providers in the United States.

U.S. citizens who have adopted Haitian children through the domestic Haitian process (rather than an intercountry adoption) and have an appointment date from USCIS for an N-600K interview may apply for a B-1/B-2 visa for the child to attend the interview and naturalize.  This is appropriate only for children who do not intend to reside in the United States.  See Nonimmigrant Visas  below.

Nonimmigrant Visas

Most nonimmigrant visa categories require the applicant to demonstrate intent to leave the United States after a temporary stay .

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince has suspended routine nonimmigrant visa appointments until further notice.  T he U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince can only accept expedited nonimmigrant visa appointments for life-or-death medical emergencies (with proof of travel plans) or to facilitate travel for a child with a confirmed USCIS appointment for a naturalization interview based on a Form N-600K .  Applicants can submit a request for an expedited NIV appointment by following the instructions provided at https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ht/en/nonimmigrant-visa .

Nonimmigrant visa applicants may apply at any embassy or consulate where they are physically present and where appointments are available.  A full list of embassies and consulates is available here: https://www.usembassy.gov/ .  Appointment wait times are available at U.S. Visas (state.gov) .  Once an interview appointment is made, applicants can request an expedited appointment but must describe the unique circumstances that justify such a request.

Hot diggity dog.

A curious pooch sniffing boxes left atop a stove in its family’s Colorado Springs home accidentally turned on a burner, causing a fire to break out early Wednesday morning.

The blaze ignited on the stovetop just before 4:45 a.m. and quickly grew in size, setting off the smoke alarms and the family’s Apple HomePod “high heat” alert,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.

The curious pooch was sniffing boxes left atop a stove in its family's Colorado Springs home accidentally turned on a burner, causing a fire to break out early Wednesday morning.

The male homeowner was able to extinguish the fire before anyone was seriously hurt.

Colorado Springs firefighters arrived at the home shortly after to aid the family and investigate the cause of the fire.

When they reviewed the home surveillance footage from inside the kitchen, what they saw shocked them.

They saw the family’s dog jump up on its hind legs to sniff the boxes and seconds later, flames shot out of the stovetop.

The pup inadvertently pressed in a knob of one of the burners — which quickly lit the boxes on fire as the pooch walked out of the kitchen, the video released by the fire department shows.

The male homeowner was able to extinguish the fire before anyone was seriously hurt.

“After talking to the homeowners and looking through their home security footage, we determined their pup got a bit curious and accidentally switched on the oven which had some boxes on top of it,” Colorado Springs fire officials said in the post.

The male homeowner who put out the fire was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other people or pets were injured, the officials said.

The blaze caused by the freak accident, however, badly damaged their house, leaving them homeless.
