Bike Inner Tube Sizes Chart (Easy Guide With Images)

Bicycle Inner Tube Size Guide

I know finding your bike tube size can be somewhat confusing for the beginners. Fret not, I’ll make it super easy with images and charts. First step, you need to know the dimensions of two things – the diameter or size of the wheel and the width of the tire. Both can be found on the sidewall of your bicycle tire.

Example – 27.5 x 2.30: the first figure here refers to the diameter or size of the bicycle wheel, while the second figure is the width of the tire. Bike wheel comes in different sizes, such as 24″, 26″ , 27.5″, and 29″. And the tire width can vary according to the bike type, ranging from 1.4″ to 3″. Look at the image below –

Bike tube size numbers and meanings

When selecting the right tube size, you need to consider the exact number/measurement of the wheel diameter. For the tire width, the exact number isn’t required as bike inner tubes stretch or expand . When you see a bicycle tube with this number – 26 x 1.75 – 2.4 , the numbers 1.75 – 2.4 mean the tube will fit a tire width in the range of 1.75 to 2.4 inch. Got it?

Bike tube size chart

According to manufacturers, sizes on tires can be given in inches, mm, or ‘c’. A 700 x 28c tire (French system) has the same width as 700 x 28 mm tire (c = mm) . Below is the inner tube size chart for different bike tires – for road, mountain, kids, gravel, hybrid, touring, and so on.

ISO/ETRTO tire sizing

ISO/ETRTO Tire Size meaning

Most bike tires found in the US and UK are marked with either Imperial or Metric sizing. But, in some countries, you may also come across a tire size like – 28-622 (same as 700x28c ), which is called an ISO / ETRTO sizing. Unlike the English sizing, the first number here ( 28 ) is the width of the tire in mm , the second one (622) is the diameter/size of the tire. Pretty odd, right?

Below is the ETRTO wheel size converted to English system:

Inner tube valve types – choose the correct one

Schrader vs Presta tire

Now as you know the size of your bike tube, the next thing is to know the valve stem types of the inner tube. There are usually two common bicycle tube valves – Schrader and Presta. Let’s see the differences in the table below:

People also ask

Are all bike inner tubes of the same size?

No. Bicycle inner tubes come in variety of sizes according to the wheel circumference and width of the tire. You need to select the tube size depending on your bike’s wheel sizes and tire width. Eg. 27.5 x 1.75″ to 2.1″, the first dimension (27.5) indicates the wheel size while the second figures (1.75″ to 2.1) indicate that the tube will fit tires within the range of 1.75″ to 2.1″.

What is the standard road bike tube size?

Most road bikes use 700c x 23mm/700c x 23c tires. So, we can say that the standard tube size of a road bike is 700 × 20 – 25mm. However, high-end performance road bicycles mostly use 700x28c inner tubes.

Can I use 1.75 tube in 1.95 tire?

Yes, normally a 1.75 tube should be compatible with a 1.95 tire. As long as the number is within the range of the width of the tire, the inner tube will easily fit in.

What size inner tube do I need for 700x38c ?

For a 700x38c tire, you’ll need an inner tube labelled within this size range – 700×32-47mm. It’s even perfect if you find a tube with this exact number – 700 x 35-38”. A good rule of thumb is that the second numbers should be fairly close to your tire width.

Wrapping up

If you are a cyclist, it’s certain that your bicycle tube will be punctured at some point of time. Also, keeping a spare inner tube at home is also a smart choice. The thing is, you cannot get it wrong while determining the correct tube. So, to know the right tube size of your bike, use our chart and guide given above. With the right tools, it isn’t difficult to replace the tube by yourself at home.

One comment

Can I use a 26×1.75-1.95 tube inside a 2.3 tire without problems? Will the tube be stretched too thin to take a hard ride?

Bike Inner Tube Size Chart: How Do You Know?

Bike inner tubes are essential components that keep your tires inflated and your ride smooth. Choosing the correct inner tube size is crucial for maintaining optimal tire performance and preventing flat tires.

What size inner tube do I need for my bik 1

To help you navigate the world of inner tubes, here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding and using a bike inner tube size chart.

Why Inner Tube Size Matters

The right inner tube size ensures proper tire inflation, stability, and durability.

An incorrectly sized inner tube can lead to overstretching, increased risk of punctures, and compromised handling on the road or trail.

What size inner tube do I need for my bike?

The bike inner tube size chart provides valuable information that helps you select the appropriate inner tube size for your bike’s tires.

The chart typically lists tire sizes in inches or millimeters and the corresponding inner tube sizes.

It’s important to match the inner tube size with your tire size to ensure a snug fit and reliable performance.

16″ Bike Inner Tube Size

20″ bike inner tube size, 26″ bike inner tube size, 27.5″ bike inner tube size, 29″ bike inner tube size, 700c bike inner tube size, factors to consider.

When using a bike inner tube size chart, keep the following factors in mind:

Tire Diameter: The most crucial measurement is the diameter of your tire. It’s usually indicated on the sidewall of the tire and can be expressed in inches (e.g., 26″, 27.5″, 700c) or millimeters (e.g., 650b, 622).

Tire Width: In addition to diameter, pay attention to the width of your tire. The inner tube size chart often accounts for different tire widths within the same diameter range.

Valve Type: Inner tubes come with different valve types—Schrader or Presta. Ensure that the inner tube’s valve matches your rim’s valve hole.

Types of Bike Inner Tube Size Charts

There are various types of bike inner tube size charts, including:

Standard Size Chart: This chart provides inner tube sizes based on common tire diameters (e.g., 26″, 27.5″, 700c) and widths.

Mountain Bike Size Chart: Tailored for off-road enthusiasts, this chart suggests inner tube sizes suitable for various mountain bike tire dimensions.

Road Bike Size Chart: Geared towards road cyclists, this chart focuses on inner tubes for narrow road bike tires.

How to Choose the Right Inner Tube

Find Your Tire Size: Locate the tire size on the sidewall of your bike’s tire. It will be in the format of “Diameter x Width.”

Use the Chart: Consult the inner tube size chart to identify the inner tube size that matches your tire’s diameter and width.

Consider Valve Type: Ensure that the valve type (Schrader or Presta) matches your rim’s valve hole.

Buy Quality Tubes: Invest in high-quality inner tubes from reputable brands to minimize the risk of punctures and ensure durability.

Additional Tips:

  • If your tire size falls between two sizes on the chart, it’s generally safe to choose the larger size.
  • Always carry spare inner tubes and a pump or CO2 inflator during rides to handle unexpected flats.

Bottom Line

When you decide to fit a new inner tube for your bicycle, you need to understand the bike’s inner tube size chart.

Even though it seems complex, it is pretty easy, as you can get the right tube once you know the tire size of your bike.

Don’t feel bothered; this article would help you through the process with simple explanations.

Review of Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2

trek marlin 5 review

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is an entry-level trail bike ideally suited for beginners and recreational riders who need a dependable hardtail to hit the trails or use for a daily commute.

It features Shimano Altus 2×8 components, hydraulic disc brakes, an 80-100mm travel fork, and comes in four stunning paint jobs.

The Marlin 5 has been one of the best-selling mountain bikes in this price range for a good reason, and we expect the Gen 2 version to follow in its steps.

  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • 100 mm of front travel
  • Progressive wheel sizing
  • Heavy coil fork

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Full List of Specs

Trek marlin 5 gen 2 full review.

If you’re considering buying your first mountain bike or treating yourself to a brand-new bicycle you’ll use as an everyday workhorse and commuter; the Marlin 5 Gen 2 is a solid choice.

The Trek Marlin 5 is an entry-level trail bike that has a lot to offer to trail lovers. If you want to figure out whether this bike is right for you, check out our detailed review below!

Quality Frame and Fork

The base of the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is the brand’s Alpha Silver aluminum frame with a sleek design and stable geometry, suitable for various rider needs. This frame features internal cable routing that protects your cables from the elements and adds to the bike’s clean look.

trek marlin 5 gen 2 mountain bike

Marlin 5’s frame is available in eight sizes , so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect one for your height. The SR Suntour fork is basic but provides 100 mm (or 80mm on the XS) of travel to take the sting off light trails. This fork has a coil spring which makes it a bit heavy, but it comes with a preload function, which is a nice plus.

Precise Hydraulic Disc Brakes

The star of the show on the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is its Tektro hydraulic disc brakes . We are always pleasantly surprised to see them on bikes below $1,000, as hydraulic discs are a rare find in this price range.

Thanks to these hydraulic disc brakes, the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is a bike that performs well in all weather conditions.

Compared to all other types, hydraulic brakes output the most power and provide the most precision. Trek has even gone so far as to install short-reach levers on the smallest frames.

2.20″ Tires and Progressive Wheel Sizing

Depending on how tall you are and which frame size end up going for, your Trek Marlin 5 will come with either 26″, 27.5″, or 29″ wheels .

Trek Marlin 5 Bontrager wheels and tires

The XXS frame has 26″ wheels, the XS and S frames come with 27.5″ wheels, and all other sizes are 29ers. Progressive wheel sizing and a curved top tube on the smaller frames decrease the standover height of the bike and ensure a much better fit for all rider heights.

The rims on all sizes are Bontrager Connection. They’re double-walled and have 32 spokes, which means they’ll take plenty of abuse. The Bontrager XR2 2.2″ tires are not tubeless, but they will give you plenty of grip on the three different wheel diameters. The 27.5″ wheels have extra clearance for 2.4″ tires.

Shimano Drivetrain

Another positive aspect of the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is that the entire drivetrain comprises Shimano parts. Sure, they are entry-level quality, but they offer more than enough performance and precision for the average beginner trail rider.

trek marlin 5 mountain bike

The Marlin 5 Gen 2 has 16 gears on a 2×8-speed drivetrain and comes with a complete Shimano Altus M315 drivetrain , which is one quality class higher than Tourney. This compares to the previous model’s more complex and heavier 3×7-speed drivetrain.

The crankset is 36/22t with 160mm cranks on the XXS and 170mm on the other sizes. This crankset pairs with a 12-32t cassette.

Dependable Bontrager Parts

Bontrager is Trek’s in-house brand that makes numerous parts and accessories. The Bontrager label on Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 can be seen on the saddle, seat post, handlebar, grips, and stem.

Trek makes all of these parts specifically for their bikes, which means they are 100% compatible and perform for a long time without any issues. However, one of this bike’s downsides is that the headset is not tapered , so you might have a harder time upgrading the fork if you ever decide to do that.

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Sizing Chart

  • XXS — 4’5″ – 4’9″ / 135 – 145 cm
  • XS — 4’9″ – 5’1″ / 145 – 155 cm
  • S —  5’1″ – 5’5″ / 155 – 165 cm
  • M —  5’5″ – 5’8″ / 165 – 173 cm
  • M/L — 5’8″ – 5’11” / 173 – 180 cm
  • L —  5’11” – 6’2″ / 180 – 188 cm
  • XL —  6’2″ – 6’5″ / 188 – 195 cm
  • 2XL — 6’5″ – 6’8″ / 195 – 203 cm

Who Is Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Best Suited For?

Like any other bicycle, the Trek Marlin 5 will not be a good buy for everyone. It is an entry-level machine mainly intended for beginner riders and those who do not take cycling too seriously.

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 should be shortlisted by beginner riders who are looking for their first mountain bike to commute or explore the dirt roads in their area.

If riding a bike is a weekend activity or a mode of transportation for you, then Marlin 5 will meet and exceed your expectations. You’ll be able to cover thousands of miles on it without any upgrades and explore farther than before.

However, if your idea of cycling is to hit trails as hard as possible and test your skills and limits, then you should save a bit more money and invest in a bike with slightly better components.

Is Marlin 5 Gen 2 a Good Buy?

The value for money you get out of this bike leads us to conclude that the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 is an excellent buy . For around $700, you get a high-grade aluminum frame that’s light, rigid, and durable (it’s even found on some  more expensive Trek bikes).

trek marlin 5 gen 2 curved top tube frame

The drivetrain is entry-level, but the brakes are powered by hydraulics which is the best setup you can get right now.

For this amount of money, it’s a bargain. Therefore, if you’re the type of rider we’ve described, the Marlin 5 Gen 2 is a purchase that will put a long-lasting smile on your face if you go forward with it.

Thank you BIKEXCHANGE for helping me to make up my mind in purchasing the Marlin 5!

You’re welcome, Gwen! We’re happy we could help! Have fun with your new bike!

Great review. One question .. is this the old 5 or new 5 model? The new Marlin 5 design as I understand it being the old 5 plus aspects of Marlin 6 bike & otherwise that’s led to discontinuance of the Marlin 6 and only selling a Marlin 5 & 7 model going forward?

Much appreciated!

I am still riding my 2017 Marlin 6 its been too Hell and back. I live in the woods near Downtown Nashville 32 Thousand miles all pavement. riding in Hurricanes and Polor Vortex. Just got new breaks and Maxxis Hook Worm tires.I do circules around Gravel bikes.

Thinking about buying one of these and as an entry level rider seems like the best choice.

thanks for the review! it has made my mind up

The trek marlin 5 is a great bike. Bought for my wife, i sneak in rides. It isnt too heavy, the bigger 29″ tires are fun to feel a little bit higher off the ground. The braking system is fantastic and was a selling point for me.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Smaller frames (XXS-S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. The larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

How to Pick the Right Bicycle Tube Size

Let’s be honest – tubes are a bit weird. Wiggly black bands of rubber, tubes are tedious to install, constantly need to be re-inflated and can be defeated by the tiniest thorns. When it comes time to purchase a new tube, how do you know which one to select?

Between the dozens of size options and the various valve stem types (Presta, what is that?), selecting the correct tube for your bike can be challenging. Check out our video below, or scroll down for a quick photo guide to help you select the perfect tire tube for your bicycle:

Slime Extra-Strong Tubes: How to Select and How to Install Video

How to Pick the Right Bicycle Tube Size Written Instructions

Diameter x Width on a bike tube

Step 1: Picking the Right Tube Size

There are two important dimensions you must know when selecting a tube: The diameter of your wheel and the width of your tire. You need both to select the correct tube size. These dimensions can be found on your tire:   Diameter x Width.

The first number is the diameter of your wheel. Sizes such as 26, 24, 20, 27.5, 29 and 700c are common tire diameters. The second number (after the X) is the width of your tire. The range for widths is usually between 1 and 3 inches. For example, a 26 x 1.75 size means the tire diameter is 26 inches and the tire width is 1.75 inches.

While your diameter measurement needs to be exact, your width measurement does not. Because inner tubes stretch, they typically come in a range of widths. For example, one of our   most popular tubes   is the 26 x 1.75-2.125” which means it fits a 26-inch diameter tire with a width in the range of 1.75 to 2.125 inches.

700c tire

Some tires have dimensions in millimeters, but the basic measurement structure is still the same: Diameter x Width. Instead of inches, you will instead see something like 700c x 18 mm. The letter at the end of the tire diameter is a carryover from an old French system that used letters a, b and c to designate inner wheel rim diameters.

Step 2: Picking the Right Valve Stem

After you know your tube size, you need to select your valve stem type. The valve stem is the metal part of the bicycle wheel that sticks out and allows air to go into (and stay in) your tire. There are three types of valve stems: Schrader, Presta and Woods/Dunlop. The Woods (or Dunlop) valve stem is extremely rare and typically only found in the Netherlands or Asia, so we won’t spend any time on it here.

Schrader and Presta Valves

Schrader valves, on the other hand, are the most common valve stems found on bicycles. The most recognizable of the bunch, sometimes they are referred to as standard valves. An easy way to remember if you have a Schrader valve is to think of the “S.” Schrader valves are   s hort,   s turdy and   s tandard. If you don’t know what valve stem you have, it is likely a Schrader.

The last valve stem type is Presta. Presta valves are traditionally found on higher-end bicycles preferred by professional cyclists. Think of the “P” in Presta standing for   p rofessional,   p erformance and   p remium. If you have a Presta valve, you usually know it.

Step 3: Durability -- Self-Sealing or Basic Tubes?

The last consideration you need to keep in mind when selecting a tube is durability. There is no reason for you to suffer from flat tires - Riding flat free can be a reality.   Self-sealing tubes   are heavy duty and designed to stop flats for up to two years! To gain that type of protection, you need to purchase tubes that come pre-installed with Slime tire sealant.

Alternatively, if you already have empty tubes, but want the protection that self-sealing tubes provide, you can insert the tube sealant yourself. Learn more about   tube protecting sealant here .

Congratulations, you are now a tube expert! When purchasing tubes, if you consider tire size, valve stem type and durability needs, then you will never select the wrong tube again. Go forth and start riding!

Aerothan Tube Race offers not only reliable puncture protection, but also safety when descending a mountain: Even when several emergency brakes are applied with rim brakes in short sequence, one can count on its heat resistance capacities.

Aerothan tubes consist of 100% thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), including the valve, and are therefore fully recyclable.

When selecting the right tube size, you need to consider the exact number/measurement of the wheel diameter. For the tire width, the exact number isn't required as bike inner tubes stretch or expand. When you see a bicycle tube with this number - 26 x 1.75 - 2.4, the numbers 1.75 - 2.4 mean the tube will fit a tire width in the range of 1.75 to 2.4 inch. Got it?

You need both to select the correct tube size. These dimensions can be found on your tire: Diameter x Width. The first number is the diameter of your wheel. Sizes such as 26, 24, 20, 27.5, 29 and 700c are common tire diameters. The second number (after the X) is the width of your tire. The range for widths is usually between 1 and 3 inches.
