2024 UAE Tour – Stage 2 Race Report

  • 9 February 2024
  • News , Vox News

How the race finished

Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) was once again fastest at the finish line in Stage 2 of the UAE Tour ahead of Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) and Clara Copponi (FDJ-Suez).

Full results are available below.

How it happened

Covering 113.5km from Al Mirfa to Madinat Zayed, Stage Two of the UAE Tour was another day for the sprinters. Once again, the question for riders was whether the wind would blow. In Stage One the wind had been strong enough to make for some nervous racing at times, but it was never enough to actually cause splits in the peloton. Today, the race set off with similar conditions forecast, and with teams looking to stay aware and near the front through the key parts of the course, just in case.

The pace was leisurely in the opening kilometres, with riders chatting away in the bunch. No one seemed to be concerned about the threat of wind, and despite the slow pace, no attempts at forming a breakaway were made. Teams seemed to wake up once the 100km to go mark was passed, forming organised trains with a bit more pace, while Movistar hovered at the rear stocking up on bottles.

At the 89 km to go mark, SD Worx-Protime came to the front, stringing the bunch out through a roundabout. Movistar joined them at the front, but the wind wasn’t enough to cause any significant splits. A few kilometres later it was dsm-firmenich Post NL’s turn to cause mischief with Pfeiffer Georgi. Using another roundabout, they strung the bunch out with SD Worx-Protime and UAE Team ADQ riders on their wheels. This time, the bunch split. Around fifteen riders surged clear off the front, including four SD Worx-Protime riders, three from dsm-firmenich Post NL, and others from FJ-Suez, Human Powered Health, and Movistar.

Lidl-Trek, EF Education Cannondale and Canyon//Sram Racing were among those to miss out. Elisa Longo-Borghini took charge in the peloton behind to organise the chase, but the gap extended out to 13 seconds – a long time on the wide, straight roads. By 75 km to go, weaker riders were tailing off the back of the peloton as the chase went full speed. A flat tyre for Lotte Kopecky, saw the impetus go out of the front group, with SD Worx-Protime having less interest in pushing on without their main GC contender present.

By 69 km to go, the peloton had caught the front group, but Kopecky was still caught behind. Once the pace slowed further, she was able to get back into the cars and back to safety. The peloton calmed down a little, with everyone catching their breath ahead of the intermediate sprints.

Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health) picked up maximum points in the first sprint, ahead of Loes Adegeest (FDJ-Suez) who built on the points and bonus seconds she pocketed in Stage 1.

In a repeat of her efforts in Stage 1, at 40km to go, Anna Kuskova (Tashkent City Women PCT) took advantage of a lull in pace, and clipped off the front. Her gap was a modest 12sec, while behind in the peloton, it looked like riders were still taking a breather after the earlier crosswind chaos.

At 37 km remaining, FDJ-Suez lifted the pace on the front of the peloton and brought Kuskova back. The bunch initially stretched out, but no other teams wanted to push on, sitting tight ahead of the second intermediate sprint. This time the bonus seconds were taken by Lotte Kopecky, which could prove important on the decisive mountain stage tomorrow. Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) and Flora Perkins (Fenix Deceuninck) took the minor positions across the line.

In a cross wind section with 26 km to go, dsm-firmenich Post NL once again strung things out. This time, there was no interest in pushing on from other teams – with the crosswind soon to turn into a strong headwind. Instead, everyone settled in for a bunch sprint.

With 3km to go, most of the strongest sprint squads were still saving energy at the back, leaving it late to move up because of the headwind. The stronger teams were happy to cede control to the likes of Uno-X Mobility and Human Powered Health, who had already set up lead out trains at the front.

A crash a 1km to go saw an EF Education Cannondale rider clip a curb, but luckily no one else went down. It was a wide road to the finish, with sprint lead out trains spread all across it. SD Worx-Protime left things very late to fight their way through the traffic to the front, but Barbara Guarischi and then Kopecky dropped Wiebes off nicely to launch her sprint. Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek) followed on Wiebes’ wheel, with Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) coming with much more speed from further back. Weibes won with the fast-finishing Consonni in second across the line. A fading Copponi just managed to hold off Georgia Baker (Liv Alula Jayco) for third.

UAE Tour 2023 Route stage 2: Khalifa Port – TTT

The inaugural edition – in 2019 – of the UAE Tour kicked off with a TTT. This is the second time trial for teams in the history of the race. Jumbo-Visma took the win in 2019 ahead of Sunweb (now DSM) and Bahrain-Merida (now Bahrain-Victorious).

The race is entirely played out on an exposed route that’s surrounded by terminals. It is a fairly straightforward affair with two U-turns. The pace will be high since the route is as flat as can be.

Khalifa Port is strategically located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It’s a deepwater port and the main hub of the UAE’s container traffic.

One day after the Tour de France made its first Grand Départ from Italy in the history of the race, Stage 2 of the race continued through Italy and ended in Bologna.

French rider Kevin Vauquelin won the day in Stage 2, making it back-to-back days with a French rider winning the stage. Vauquelin's win also brought his team – Arkéa - B&B Hotels – its first stage victory at the Tour de France in 11 tries at the race.

Unlike with Stage 1 , which saw nearly 50 riders finishing within five seconds of the leader, Vauquelin finished Stage 2 nearly 40 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor, Norwegian cyclist Jonas Abrahamsen .

Here's how the classification at the 2024 Tour de France looks after two days of racing.

More and more gear is standardized across the teams in the Tour de France . Everyone is using either SRAM or Shimano. Most use the same gearing too. And while the teams have largely seemed to settle on 28 mm tires, there are a few exceptions. We searched the team paddocks to take a closer look at what everyone is riding.

What road bike tires do the best teams in the Tour de France ride? What width do they use, and why? We dive into all of that and more below.

Continental: Nine teams

what tires do teams use in the tour de france 2024-7

What is the most commonly used bike tire at the Tour de France? That crown belongs Continental. For those using the German tire manufacturer, they’re going with the Continental Grand Prix 5000, and almost always in a 28 mm width.

That said, there are several permutations to this rule. A number of teams have elected to use the lighter GP 5000 TT TR tire. The TT model features both a thinner casing and thinner tread thickness than the S, resulting in a tire that offers 30-40 grams less rotational weight.

Interestingly, we haven’t yet seen an entire team run the GP 5000 TT TR across the team. UAE Team Emirates comes close, though notably Tadej Pogacar’s bikes feature the standard S model. The same goes with Ineos Grenadiers, with a select few riders not using the lighter tire.

Unreleased Continental front tire tour de france 2024-5

There’s another variation with Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale using what looks like a front wheel–specific aero tire made by Continental. We talk more about the new Conti aero tire here . This new front tire is paired with a GP5000 S TR tire out back.

All of these 28 mm tires measure about 29 mm, give or take a 0.1 mm here or there. The exception is that of UAE Team Emirates and Team Total Energies, which use a 28 mm tire mounted to Enve’s rims. There, the tire measures at roughly 30 mm.

The seeming exception to the 28 mm Conti tire choice has to be Movistar, as they use a 30 mm tire across the board. Why’s that? It’s the narrowest tire recommended for use by Zipp with its wheels.

As you guessed, all of these tires are set up tubeless.

Vittoria: Eight Teams

FSA Vision Metron 60 SL

Vittoria  is hot on Continental’s heels with eight teams. There is a bit more variation with this venerable Italian brand with regard to tire width, however.

Teams like EF Education-EasyPost and Arkea-B&B Hotels will almost always go with the standard Corsa Pro 28 mm tire paired with Vision Metron wheels. Astana-Qazaqstan generally specs a 28 mm or 30 mm tire. All of these tires are set up tubeless.

As you’d expect, a 28 mm Corsa Pro tire measures out to just about 29 mm mounted to the Vision Metron wheels.

Lotto-Dstny, however? They use a 30 mm Vittoria Corsa Pro tire mounted to Zipp wheels, again likely due to Zipp’s minimum tire width requirement. Interestingly, they’ve swapped tubeless installation for tubes, a notable change after Thomas De Gendt’s high-profile crash .

Team Dsm-Firmenich Post NL has chosen to use a 26 mm-wide Vittoria Corsa Pro across its rider lineup. The team tells Velo it found it to be the fastest tire in its testing; we suspect it’s the fastest width in combination with Shimano Dura-Ace wheels that feature a somewhat narrower 26 mm external width.

Then there’s Team Visma-Lease a Bike. The team uses a combination of Corsa Pro tires in a 28 mm width or what appears to be an unreleased Vittoria Corsa Pro optimized for 25 mm width rims. It features a 29 mm labeled width and printing on the sidewall indicating its optimization for a 25 mm inner rim width. We wrote more about this tire here .

Outside of Lotto-Dstny, all other Vittoria Corsa Pro tires are set up tubeless.

Specialized: Two teams

tire width at the tour de france-1-2

The two Specialized-sponsored teams — Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe and Soudal-Quickstep — both usually use the Specialized Turbo Cotton tire. They usually go for a 26 mm wide tire on either Roval’s Rapide CLX II Team wheels or Alpinist climbing wheels with latex tubes. Why? “Because it’s faster,” or so they tell me.

Soudal-Quickstep has started to mix it up a bit, however, with some riders using the Turbo Cotton tires, while others use the S-Works Turbo setup tubeless.

Their 26 mm tires measure to about 27 mm on the rim, based on our calipers.

Schwalbe, Pirelli, and Michelin each have a team

tour uae stage 2

Team Uno-X Mobility is the only team aboard Schwalbe, using the Pro One tire in a 28 mm width set up tubeless.

Lidl-Trek, is the sole Pirelli team, using the new Pirelli P Zero Race TLR RS tire in a 28 mm width set up tubeless.

Finally, comes Cofidis using a Michelin Power Cup 28 mm wide tire, set up with tubes.

Favorites stage 14 Tour de France 2024 | All cards on the table, please!

T hose who thought the peloton would take it easy on the flatter stages before reaching the Pyrenees were mistaken. But what does this mean for the tougher weekend stages, starting on Saturday? IDLProCycling.com attempts to find out for you!

Course stage 14 Tour de France 2024

The riders start off in Pau, where Friday's crazy stage also ended. We often start mountain stages in the Tour de France from this southern French city, which has earned it the nickname 'The Gateway to the Pyrenees'. From the starting point, we head towards the pilgrimage site of Lourdes, bringing the major cols into sight.

The first seventy kilometers of the stage are fairly flat, with an intermediate sprint in Esquieze-Sere serving as the starting point for the first major climb of the day: the Col du Tourmalet. With its nineteen kilometers at 7.4 percent, it's a well-known climb in this Tour de France. At the top of the climb, the Souvenir Jacques Goddet is also awarded.

From the 2115-meter-high Tourmalet, we descend via La Mongie to Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, where the next climb of the day begins: the Hourquette d'Ancizan. With its 8.2 kilometers at 5.1 percent, this climb is not expected to be the decisive one of the day.

A nine-kilometer descent to Guchen brings us back below an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, after which we ride through the valley for a short while. From Saint-Lary-Soulan, we begin the final climb of the day, the Pla d'Adet.

The first three kilometers of this final climb are the toughest, with gradients of 9.0, 10.5 and 11.7 percent consecutively. After that, the average gradient gradually decreases, with the last hundred meters being slightly uphill.

89.6 km: COL DU TOURMALET (19.0 km at 7.4%)

123.4 km: HOURQUETTE D'ANCIZAN 8.2 km at 5.1%)

Weather stage 14 Tour de France 2024

The wind comes from the east, meaning it will be mostly against the riders for most of the day. Only on the final climb will there be a tailwind (partly), with temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius.

The big names will get another chance to go for the stage win on Saturday, because we are mainly looking at Jonas Vingegaard ( Visma | Lease a Bike) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) for this stage. Both riders have won one stage each in this Tour de France so far, but the Pla d'Adet offers a new opportunity for the top contenders.

The other general classification riders are unlikely to be able to match these men uphill, but due to the large time gaps, some riders further down the standings might join an early breakaway. Sunday's stage, which starts uphill, is better suited for this, but Saturday also presents a possible opportunity.

Specifically, we're talking about riders in places seven to twelve, who often choose to attack and climb well. Adam Yates (UAE-Team Emirates) already tried on Friday, but Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek, eighth), Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech, ninth), Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R, tenth), Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious, eleventh) and Ben Healy (EF, twelfth) have made great things happen in this way before. However, like we said, Sunday's stage is more suited to this scenario.

They might not match the earlier mentioned riders uphill, but Remco Evenepoel , Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) and Joao Almeida (UAE-Team Emirates) will likely finish close for their general classification.

And then there's the option that a breakaway without immediate threat to the general classification might make it to the end. In that scenario, we think of riders like Oier Lazkano , Enric Mas, Javier Romo (Movistar), Richard Carapaz (EF), Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Simon Yates , Chris Harper (Jayco AlUla), Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Egan Bernal (INEOS) and Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X).

Pogacar wins mountainous 14th stage of Tour de France to extend overall lead over Vingegaard

SAINT-LARY-SOULAN PLA D’ADET, France (AP) — Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar surged ahead on the last climb to win the mountainous 14th stage of the Tour de France and extend his overall lead to nearly two minutes on Saturday.

The elite climbers’ duel between Pogacar and the two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard finally came when Pogacar peeled away with about five kilometers (three miles) left.

“I love racing on instinct,” Pogacar said. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but I love it that way.”

Pogacar caught up with and overtook his UAE Emirates teammate Adam Yates, while Vingegaard was initially dropped but showed good composure to limit the damage.

The Dane crossed the line 39 seconds behind the Slovenian Pogacar, who completed the 152-kilometer (99-mile) trek in just over four hours.

“Let’s keep this positive energy so we can win more,” Pogacar said. “I was feeling really good today.”

Remco Evenepoel of Belgium was third and dropped to third overall behind Vingegaard.

“I stayed with him a little but he rode faster and faster and I was dropped,” Evenepoel said. “The pace was very high.”

Image

After about two hours riders reached the first of the day’s two big “hors catégorie” (beyond category) climbs — a 19-kilometer (12-mile) grind up the Col du Tourmalet, one of the race’s most famed Pyrenean climbs.

The second HC climb to the finish at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet was shorter at 10.6 kilometers (seven miles) but with a steeper gradient.

Irishman Ben Healy attacked first but was caught by Yates, who set up Pogacar for his 13th stage win of his Tour career.

“Thanks to all the team, especially Adam,” said Pogacar, who won his second Tour in 2021.

Time bonuses for the victory added four valuable seconds and extended Pogacar’s lead over Vingegaard to 1 minute, 57 seconds.

“It’s a good lead, but you never know,” Pogacar said. “There is a long way to go.”

Evenepoel was 2:22 behind Pogacar heading into another big mountain stage on Sunday.

A group of 10 riders formed a breakaway in Saturday’s stage, moving four minutes ahead of the yellow jersey group approaching the Tourmalet ascent.

But with Nils Politt riding tempo for Pogacar’s team, the breakaway soon shredded to five riders, including Healy.

Approaching the final climb, Healy attacked and the four others could not follow.

Healy had a chance to win his first Tour stage and a second in major races following a stage win at the Giro d’Italia last year. But those hopes ended when Yates, followed by Pogacar, overtook him.

Their attack seemed to surprise Vingegaard, who beat Pogacar to win Stage 11 on Wednesday, and it looked like he would lose significantly more time. But a strong response from the Team Jumbo Visma rider helped him stay within one minute of Pogacar.

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay, who has won three stages, retained the best sprinter’s green jersey.

Sunday’s 15th stage — which falls on Bastille Day, France’s national day — features four big climbs before an even harder grind up to Plateau de Beille.

Monday is the second rest day of the three-week race, which this year finishes in Nice rather than Paris because of the Olympic Games . ___

How to watch the 2021 UAE Tour – live TV and streaming

UAE Tour

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage from stage 2 of the 2021 UAE Tour. It's time trial day!

After yesterday's unexpected but welcome excitement in the cross-winds it's time to see the TT riders take centre stage. The course is only 13km in length and it's totally flat but this is a significant test for all involved. Filippo Ganna starts as the out-and-out favourite but the GC stars, Pogacar, Almeida and Yates all need to step up.

Matthieu Ladagnous (Fra) Groupama-FDJ will be our first rider off in just over ten minutes time. Ganna heads off at 15:48 local time, which is about two hours later.

Some of the early starters, right here: 1 Matthieu Ladagnous (Fra) Groupama-FDJ 13:45:00

2 Kristian Sbaragli (Ita) Alpecin-Fenix 13:46:00

3 Mikkel Bjerg (Den) UAE Team Emirates 13:47:00

4 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Lotto Soudal 13:48:00

5 Jonathan Milan (Ita) Bahrain Victorious 13:49:00

6 Patrick Konrad (Aut) Bora-Hansgrohe 13:50:00

7 Stefan De Bod (RSA) Astana-Premier Tech 13:51:00

Bjerg off third today and in theory he's a contender for a strong opening time and he could be one of the few riders who comes close to Ganna for the stage. The UAE rider lost significant time yesterday but this course is good for him. UAE will expecting him to be in the hotseat during their home race.

Yesterday saw the race split to pieces in the crosswinds before van der Poel stormed to the win. There were good riders from Yates, Pogacar, and Almeida but several GC riders lost so much time that they're already out of the GC frame. Here's our GC analysis page. Almeida's one second time bonus at an intermediate sprint ensures that he starts his TT after Pogacar.

Ladagnous is on the start list and 3, 2, 1, we're off and racing on stage 2 of the UAE Tour.

It was hard at the back at the UAE Tour

Do you agree with these ratings ahead of today's stage:

Breaking news and we're hearing reports that Mathieu van der Poel  is out of the race after a positive test for COVID-19. More to come...

Wielerflits are reporting that the race leader will not start the TT today and that he's gone. There's no more information at this stage but this is a disaster for the race and brings back all the memories from last year's positive tests.

It looks like all of the Alpecin team have been pulled from the race.

🇦🇪 #UAETour We can confirm that we have withdrawn from the race.More information will be given soon. The wellbeing of everyone involved is our main concern. February 22, 2021

Details are sketchy but all we have right now is that the positive test came from a staff member.

Here's the full statement from the race organisers, so we have some official news: Abu Dhabi, 22 February 2021  - Alpecin-Fenix, in agreement with the UAE Tour organiser, have decided to withdraw its team from the race, in order to safeguard the race bubble and ensure the safe continuation of the race. The team was notified of one positive result of a member of its staff from the round of tests conducted on Sunday evening, 21st of February. Upon receiving the results, the person immediately went into isolation, and all those who came into contact with this person are self-isolating, in compliance with the protocol measures put in place by the race organisers and UAE Health Authorities. All team members will undertake further tests in the coming days, while they remain in isolation.

Bjerg by the way has gone fastest with a time of 14:17 over the 13km course.

Here's our breaking news on van der Poel and his Alpecin Fenix team. It's a developing story so please update it for more information.

Stefan Bissegger (Swi) EF Education-Nippo has just set the fastest time at the intermediate checkpoint.

14:10 for Stefan Bissegger and he's fastest by seven seconds over Bjerg. That's a huge performance from the EF-Education Nippo rider.

Emanuel Buchmann should be coming to the finish shortly, followed by Luis Leon Sanchez.

Here's the communication from the Alpecin team.

8:02 for Buchmann at the intermediate split but it's still Bissegger who leads the stage with a time of 14:10.

De Bod is currently third on the leaderboard, behind Bissegger and Bjerg with a time of 14:29. Alejandro Valverde is about to start his TT.

6th on the line for Buchmann with a time of 14:48 for the German. Not too shabby but there's a lot of good riders still to come.

Chris Froome (GBr) Israel Start-up Nation starts his time trial in just under ten minutes.

Jack Bauer is having a storming ride and has caught his minute man Fabio Sabatini (Ita) Cofidis who really need to let the wheel go. 14;58 and 12th for Bauer on the line.

Brandle takes 5th fastest at the line just a few seconds later.

14;26 for LL Sanchez and that's good enough for third at this piont. Good ride from the veteran on Astana Premier Tech.

Froome goes off strong, spending but 200m out of the saddle as he looks to build up speed immediately.

Powless starts and he's followed by Adam Yates (GBr) Ineos Grenadiers.

Meanwhile Valverde finishes in 21st, exactly one minute down on the current leader Stefan Bissegger.

Maximilian Walscheid (Ger) Team Qhubeka Assos takes fourth at the finish.

9th best time for Yates at the intermediate.

Froome was 33rd at the intermediate.

Caleb Ewan and Jack Haig are the next starters to roll down the ramp.

15:32 for Froome and that's good enough for 33rd place on the stage.

Adam Yates is closing in on the finish and this is a crucial moment in his defense of this race.

14;54 for Yates and that's enough for 16th place. He won't be worried by the riders ahead of him at this point as his attention will be on Pogacar later. Bjerg does gain time on the Ineos rider though.

The top three at the finish remain the same with Bissegger, Bjerg and LL Sanchez currently top of the standings.

Away from this race and Peter Cossins has written up five conclusions from Haut Var. Here's the story .

Sobrero creeps into the top ten on the stage, while Formolo is about to start his effort.

Alex Dowsett about to start his TT. This course is almost perfect for the British national champion.

Here are the next wave of starters: 87 Lawson Craddock (USA) EF Education-Nippo 15:11:00

88 Daniel Martinez Poveda (Col) Ineos Grenadiers 15:12:00

89 Mathias Frank (Swi) AG2R Citroën Team 15:13:00

90 Riccardo Minali (Ita) Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux 15:14:00

91 Giacomo Nizzolo (Ita) Team Qhubeka Assos 15:15:00

92 Antonio Pedrero (Spa) Movistar Team 15:16:00

93 Sepp Kuss (USA) Jumbo-Visma 15:17:00

Dowsett steadily pushing out 420watts and looking good in these early stages.

6th and 7'52 for Dowsett at the first time check.

7'47 for Craddock and that's third at the intermediate. That's a really good time for the American. Then Dani Martinez goes second with 7'43.

Meanwhile Dowsett has caught and passed Tsgabu Grmay.

Can Daniel Martinez hold on because he's flying right now and is only five seconds off the lead.

13th place for Dowsett on that ride. He might be happy with the performance but perhaps not the result.

14:35 and 8th for Craddock. Martinez still to come.

Here are the next wave of starters: 103 Michael Hepburn (Aus) Team BikeExchange 15:27:00

104 Rick Zabel (Ger) Israel Start-up Nation 15:28:00

105 Antonio Tiberi (Ita) Trek-Segafredo 15:29:00

106 Sergio Higuita Garcia (Col) EF Education-Nippo 15:30:00

107 Andrey Amador (CRc) Ineos Grenadiers 15:31:00

108 Geoffrey Bouchard (Fra) AG2R Citroën Team 15:32:00

109 Wesley Kreder (Ned) Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux 15:33:00

110 Matteo Pelucchi (Ita) Team Qhubeka Assos 15:34:00

6th for Martinez with 14:32 and another rider fails to maintain their pace from the first half of the TT.

There is some wind out there and if that's picked up it could be why some of these riders have struggled in the second half of the TT. Could Ganna predicted win be in some doubt?

Bissegger still leads from Bjerg and LL Sanchez.

Mechanical problem for Sam Bennett as he rolls down the start ramp. He's settled in after a few hundred meters.

Here are the next wave of starters: 116 Jasper De Buyst (Bel) Lotto Soudal 15:40:00

117 Gino Mäder (Swi) Bahrain Victorious 15:41:00

118 Pascal Ackermann (Ger) Bora-Hansgrohe 15:42:00

119 Yevgeniy Gidich (Kaz) Astana-Premier Tech 15:43:00

120 Nikias Arndt (Ger) Team DSM 15:44:00

121 Kevin Colleoni (Ita) Team BikeExchange 15:45:00

122 Omer Goldstein (Isr) Israel Start-up Nation 15:46:00

123 Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Trek-Segafredo 15:47:00

14'47 and 13th on the line for Michael Hepburn.

A terrible for Antonio Tiberi (Ita) Trek-Segafredo as he comes over the line.

He's up but his jersey is torn to pieces. That was a really heavy and shocking fall. It's not clear if there was a mechanical but his bars seemed fine, and his chain didn't slip but something has gone badly wrong. Glad he's at least back on his feet.

World Champion in the TT, Ganna is about to start his effort against the clock. He's the favourite but will the conditions narrow the gap?

Here's a reminder of our main news item from today. Van der Poel and Alpecin-Fenix exit UAE Tour due to coronavirus case

Mathieu van der Poel at the UAE Tour

Here are the last batch of starters: 129 Jos van Emden (Ned) Jumbo-Visma 15:53:00

130 Chris Harper (Aus) Jumbo-Visma 15:55:00

131 Damiano Caruso (Ita) Bahrain Victorious 15:57:00

132 Anthony Roux (Fra) Groupama-FDJ 15:59:00

133 Elia Viviani (Ita) Cofidis 16:01:00

137 Michael Mørkøv (Den) Deceuninck-QuickStep 16:09:00

138 David Dekker (Ned) Jumbo-Visma 16:11:00

139 Mathieu van der Poel (Ned) Alpecin-Fenix 16:13:00

Nibali is Ganna's minute man.

Nibali is riding well, 13th at the first split.

Here comes Ganna...

Ganna is seven seconds faster at the first check and is on course for the stage win.

Ganna is closing on Nibali. The gap is about 200m.

Maybe less than 100m now.

500m to go and Ganna is hunting down Nibali.

13:56 for Ganna and he's 14 seconds faster at the line. He's just in a different league.

33rd for Nibali with 14'55.

Tour de France winner Pogacar is up and running.

Almeida is now out on the course as well.

Dekker is wearing the leader's jersey. Not sure I've seen that before given we don't actually have an official race leader after van der Poel pulled out of the race.

Pogacar is third at the first check and just 11 seconds down on Ganna. The race lead will be his if he keeps this up.

All eyes on Almeida though who hasn't yet come through the first check.

Pogacar is coming to the line and he's not going to challenge Ganna but he's riding really well and looks on course for the race lead.

Almeida was 8 seconds down on Pogacar at the intermediate and the UAE rider has 14"28 at the finish. That's a good chunk of time on Adam Yates.

Pogacar 4th at the line , 24 seconds off Ganna.

14'26 for Almedia and that keeps him within touching distance, 5 seconds down on Pogacar on GC.

Dekker comes over the line but it's a win for Ganna on stage 2 of the UAE Tour.

Here's our brief report and results .

Let's hear from our stage winner: "It’s not easy. Every race is hard because everyone arrives with focus and good legs but my body was ready today. This is a fantastic result for me and the team.

"It’s strange in the middle of the dessert but it’s really nice. This is my first time in the UAE Tour and at the moment I’m really happy and I hope to have good legs for future races like Tirreno-Adriatico in the next months.

"Every TT is a test for me and I try to arrive better and better. It’s really important. It’s a high-speed race around 55/56kph and it’s hard but I’m happy to be here. Vincenzo is a big champion. Having him in front of me was really stimulating. I tried to catch him before the finish but he was just ahead of me."

Here are the top 10 results from the stage: 1 Filippo Ganna (Ita) Ineos Grenadiers 0:13:56
