the modena plaza will be closed in the next 2 weeks due to renovation, head to ramapo for food
Absolutely not a place you want to take a rest. There are No restaurants there. There is a convenience store that sells snacks, drinks, misc stuff. There is garbage on the floor and unclea. The rest rooms are 1/2 out od order, filthy and i would not go alone. There is a sign that says they are int eh process of revitalization- Its dark, dreary and looks like the closures affected this place to. There is a lady outside with a private table who sells stuff she made. She had loaves, muffins, donuts, dehydrated apple chips, and bottles of honey, dressings, apple and pumpkin bitter. I am not sure this is a regulated or a place they are aware is selling to the public. I am not sure of the safety. I didnt want to take a risk.
This was a barn style food court rest stop. There are a few types of recycling bins in front of the barn before you walk in. Looks are deceiving. There was only one restaurant, which was closed in the evening, surrounded by abandoned booths. The gift shop was open and well stocked with snacks and souvenirs. There are lots of stalls and sinks in the women's restroom, but most are out of order. Many rest stoppers looked confused and wandered to the nice seating area. This rest area is a remnant of a bygone era, where a discarded and mangled drive-thru menu remains outside, worn down by the harsh New York elements.
Absolutely terrible there's no food places open anymore. The restrooms are very run down. There's a food truck outside Dutchess dog house, DO NOT GET ANYTHING THERE!!!! The food was not good, burnt and the prices they are charges should be against the law! if you can stop before this rest stop.
A pretty basic plaza with Moe's southwest Grille, McDonald's, Uno, a Carvel and a small convenience shop. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and it seemed reasonably clean. There wasn't an easy way to get from the gas station back to general parking, so stop first and then get gas.
This is another regular stop of mine since I'm up and down 87 frequently. It's not fabulous, but they have bathrooms that definitely needed some attention...which I guess they're getting now as there's some construction going on. There are a few fast food options, a seating area and a small store that sells chips, candy and trinkets. Let's see what the restrooms look like after the (literal) dust settles.
Quick rest stop along road trip. There is a parking lot right outside. This place has many different restaurants like mcDonalds and a pizza joint
This service plaza has no food court (only a convenience store) and is understaffed; the restrooms were filthy. The only plus is that it has a working ev charger. New York, get your act together!!!
The New York State Thruway, at least the portion from Albany southbound, does a great job with rest areas. It's a controlled access highway, so you don't want to exit and get back on. Instead, they have these "captive audience" travel plazas where you can pull over, get a snack, visit a relatively clean bathroom, perhaps buy some not-too-expensive fuel, and easily get back on the highway. No muss or fuss, no traffic lights to deal with and limited turns. These plazas are for cars and trucks with separate parking. Expect fast food, coffee and bathrooms, as we did in this one. [Review 11530 overall, 1310 of 2019.]
This travel plaza is convenient, and is evidently a popular spot for motorists. It also has quite a variety of dining options for the busy traveler. Based on the lines, I'd assume Moe's is the most popular choice, but we didn't eat here. It was crowded, claustrophobia-inducing, and smelled weird. I couldn't wait to get back outside, where the aroma of fuel and asphalt was widely preferable to the alternative. If the restrooms had been cleaner, this would be a three star review. A must in my book -- you've got to have clean restrooms that don't smell bad. Trash everywhere, toilets overflowing and clogged (hence the smell, I assume) and very, very crowded. A world of ick. That said, the outside area is nicely landscaped. Gas prices were reasonable for the area and there was no waiting for a pump.

22 Photos to Inspire You to Visit Modena
Admittedly, I have seen very little of Italy. Venice , Rome , and Bologna, to be exact – which is not much at all. But I take great pride in saying that I have been to Modena, a city that represents Italy in many aspects, from the foodie culture to the car industry, and to the wonderful terracotta-coloured architecture.
Not familiar with Modena? You will be after this post. This idyllic town located on the flat plains of the sluggish Po River is home to some of Italy’s most precious culinary traditions as well as an infinitely authentic, deeply magnetizing atmosphere that I have rarely seen in my travels.
PS I will not be held responsible for any spontaneous plane ticket purchase made after reading this post. Continue at your own risk!
Modena Travel – In Photos
The view from atop the campanile
Photogenic alleyways behind the Duomo
The impressive walk to the top!
It makes sense to start at the beginning, right? This is why I headed to Piazza Grande and the Modena Cathedral first thing in the morning; I knew the view from atop the soaring Ghirlandina tower would not only make for good photos (and it certainly delivered on that aspect!), but would also help me get the lay of the land.
Duomo di Modena was first built a whopping millennium ago and has since been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional architecture, a “masterpiece of human creative genius” that remains, to this day, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe.
Now home to the Italian Military Academy headquarters, the Palazzo ducale di Modena served as the residence of the Este Dukes of Modena (one of the most prominent European families) for over 500 years. The building’s striking Baroque features are enhanced by the vast and virtually bare piazza in front of it.
Of course, one of Modena’s most popular and well-known features are the long and elegant arcades. I tried to find out where exactly this classic Emilia-Romagna feature might be from; after all, you don’t go through all the trouble of building countless ornate archways just for the sake of it, right? Was it because of weather issues, or simply because of Modena’s wealth as a major trading point between Northern and Southern Europe?
One of the best meals of my life was at Da Danilo in Modena. Tortellini is a local speciality, and each restaurant has its secret, mouthwatering filling that made me want to order second servings every time. Pictured here is a ricotta-spinach tortellini glazed in sweet balsamic vinegar. With a glass of local lambrusco, of course.
Modena Travel: Know Before You Go
- I stayed at Hotel Libertà just off Piazza Mazzini Giuseppe.
- If indeed you wish to stay overnight and discover what Modena’s tummy is made of, get a ticket for the Discover Ferrari & Pavarotti land shuttle bus that will take you to wineries, Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar factories, Luciano Pavarotti house museum, Ferrari museum/factory and many more iconic Modena attractions.
- Personally, though, considering I got my driver’s licence at the ripe age of 28 years old I wouldn’t say cars are a passion of mine! But Modena is, nonetheless, a famous car town. Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti and many more are headquartered there – so if you’re a car enthusiast, this is definitely the place to be.

Dvortsovaya Ploshchad (Palace Square)
One of the most beautiful and harmonious ensembles of architecture in the world, Palace Square remains the main public space of St. Petersburg after nearly three centuries. Like Red Square in Moscow, Palace Square in St. Petersburg has been the setting of many major events in Russian history.
The Winter Palace was constructed on the square between 1754 and 1762 by Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It was the first building completed on Palace Square, and it became the main residence of the Russian Emperors. Legend has it that upon its completion the area was cluttered with piles of debris, and the public could freely take anything left over. After a few hours, the entire square was cleared by the townspeople.
At the end of the 18th century houses were built on the southern side of the square. This greatly dismayed Catherine the Great, for she had previously admired the unencumbered space from the windows of the Winter Palace. Catherine commissioned Yury Felten to create a worthy architectural counterpoint to the Winter Palace. Although Felten's project was never realized, it formed the basis for Carlo Rossi's grand design for the magnificent General Staff Building, built between 1819 and 1829. With a 580-meter semicircular facade facing Palace Square, it has at its centre a magnificent triumphal arch surmounted by the Chariot of Glory with six rearing horses. Completing the ensemble is the Alexander Column, designed by the French architect Auguste Montferrand, and the Guard Corps Headquarters designed by Alexander Briullov.
Since its inception, Palace Square has been the site of numerous parades and festivals, but it has also seen its share of bloodshed. On April 2nd, 1879, Alexander Soloviev unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate Tsar Alexander II by firing five shots from a revolver at the Emperor. On January 9th, 1905, Tsarist Imperial Guards opened fire upon unarmed protesters approaching the Winter Palace. Hundreds of demonstrators were killed and wounded, and the event became known as "the Bloody Sunday Massacre". And, of course, during the night of October 25th, 1917, Bolshevik troops stormed and sacked the Winter Palace, marking the end of Tsarist rule in Russia.
From 1923 to 1944, the square was renamed Uritsky Square, after Mosei Uritsky, Chairman of the Petrograd Cheka. In the summer of 1924, a gigantic chess board was constructed in the square for a unique "live" match. Sailors and Red Army soldiers represented the white and black chess pieces respectively, and the knights were even on horseback. The game's moves were directed via telephone. In 1977, a "grid" was formed from 460 small gray and pink granite tiles adorning the square. Today, many public events and concerts are held here throughout the year and Palace Square is a favorite spot for New Year's, Victory Day, Scarlet Sails, and White Nights celebrations.
