Lorna Shore in Toronto, ON – Show Review

lorna shore tour toronto

Lorna Shore, Aborted, Ingested, Angelmaker, Ov Sulfur November 19, 2022 Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON Canadian Beats Passport

Lorna Shore’s   Pain Remains  tour is the summation of a genre. A collection of bands that are relevant and are prime examples of what deathcore can and should be. On November 19 th , 2022, Lorna Shoreput on an impressive show to a sold-out crowd at the Phoenix in Toronto. This stunning tour package also contained  Aborted, Ingested, Angelmaker, and  Ov Sulfur. Unfortunately, our photographer missed the first two bands for photos due to the weather.

Opening the show was  Ov Sulfur.  Although the band has only been around since 2021, some might recognize the vocalist, Ricky Hoover, from the deathcore band Suffokate .  Admittedly, they were the band I knew the least. They certainly did a terrific job at setting the stage and warming up the crowd with their exciting tunes.

Up next was one of my all-time favourite bands,  Angelmaker.  The only Canadians on the bill, Angelmaker brings the heat. Two vocalists, and three guitar players, along with bass and drums, ensure that the sound is huge. Despite being a sound person’s worst nightmare, they were impeccable. Wasting no time, they played many fan favourites both new and old. The impression I got was the crowd was on board and fully invested. They pack so much energy, and their music translates to the stage perfectly.

UK slam legends  Ingested  have come a long way. It was only recently that they were playing small clubs in North America. It seems they have finally found their audience overseas, and their music is becoming more popular. Their performance was filled with catchy grooves, deep growls, and infectious breakdowns that will make any metal fan bang their head. Their last two records were their biggest yet, and their set list backed this up, playing mostly new material. This was certainly a good call because the crowd went wild. It was around this time of the night when the show’s energy was really picking up. A spectacular display, to say the least.

Lorna Shore 1

Aborted  might have given Lorna Shorea a run for their money. Most definitely, a worthy co-headliner. Aborted’s music is wild, catchy, and break-neck fast. Their stage props decorated the space with eerie lighting a what appeared to be glass cages filled with macabre creatures. Their songs are short, which gave them plenty of time to play songs from different eras of their career. I have seen them before, and I like them more every time. They are one of the best live metal bands of this era.

Lorna Shore 5

Finally,  Lorna Shore  reminded everyone why they are kings of deathcore. Their recent blowout success should be no mystery to anyone that has seen them since the joining of vocalist Will Ramos. Ramos is a charismatic frontman which is only matched by his vocal abilities. Their set list was an hour & a half long, which is an impressive feat considering how difficult their music is. Every guitar part is fast, bombastic, and technical. Every drum part is riddled with blast beats and blistering double kick. The vocals should only be attempted by the best of the best. Simply put, whatever Lorna Shore does, they set a new standard of excellence. Despite the long set list, it was wickedly entertaining the entire time. Playing mostly new material, they know what the fans wanted to hear.

At the time of this review, the tour has concluded. I was so fortunate to be a witness. This tour will surely go down in history as a legendary run. The  Pain Remains   tour has captured a moment in time when all these bands are influential; all the while, the headliner has blown up to almost mainstream status, a rare accomplishment for such a heavy band. This was an amazing night and one that I’ll never forget. A perfect show.”

The Mega-Monsters Tour attacks North American this spring

Mastodon 2021

Metal juggernauts Mastodon and Gojira are hitting the road together this spring on the Mega-Monsters Tour. The trek kicks off on and wraps up on. Very special guests for the run will be one of last year’s biggest breakout acts – Lorna Shore. The first leg of the trek kicks off on April 18 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon and wraps up on May 11 at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. In August, the bands will return for a second run starting on August 9 at MegaCorp Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Check out the fill tour itinerary below.

Back in 2014, Mastodon and Gojira mounted a brief U.S. tour together.

Pre-sale tickets will be available tomorrow, January 18 at 10am local venue time. The pre-sale runs through Thursday, January 19 at 10pm. General public 0n-sale begins Friday, January 20 at 10am local venue time. For more information and to purchase tickets, go HERE .

VIP Meet & Greet Passes for Mastodon will also be available.

Mastodon released their ninth album Hushed and Grim on October 29, 2021. The double-LP featured the GRAMMY® Award-nominated track “Pushing The Tides.” It performed well commercially, peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart. It also marked the band’s third straight chart-topping album on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums.

Gojira Jimmy Fontaine

Nearly two years since its release, Gojira are still riding the wave of their latest effort Fortitude (Roadrunner). The album’s hit single “Amazonia” earned the band a GRAMMY® nod for Best Metal Performance. The record topped both Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts. It peaked at No. 2 in their native France.

Death metallers Lorna Shore formed in 2009 and released three full-length albums from 2015 to 2020. Last year, however, the band finally broke out with their massive hit LP Pain Remains (Century Media). The album hit No. 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart. With the release of the critically-acclaimed record, the band are in the forefront of a new class of modern metal acts.

The Mega-Monsters Tour (Mastodon, Gojira, Lorna Shore) Tramples Toronto’s Budweiser Stage [Photos]

Billed as a coheadlining tour between Mastodon and Gojira, add on opening act Lorna Shore and you’ve got a recipe for an evening of musical mayhem at Budweiser Stage.

' src=

Originally booked at Echo Beach for Thursday, August 17th, this show wound up getting an upgrade to Budweiser Stage , but on the night before (Wednesday, August 16th) shortly after it was announced. Billed as a coheadlining tour between Mastodon and Gojira , where both bands play the same set lengths and rotate who closes, fans were treated to a metal double-header this evening. Add on opening act Lorna Shore , a band more appealing to the younger patrons than either headliner, and you’ve got a recipe for an evening of musical mayhem.

Lorna Shore took the Budweiser Stage at 7:00 pm, performing a relentless thirty minutes of material as the band was washed in the Toronto sunset. Vocalist Will Ramos marvelled at how many people had arrived early this evening and thanked the audience for checking them out. Ramos and his band-mates (lead guitarist Adam De Micco , drummer Austin Archey , rhythm guitarist Andrew O’Connor , and bassist Michael Yager ) pummeled the audience with high-decibel black metal. It was almost like they knew they had to squeeze every minute of their shorter set time to wow the audience – fans were coming over the security rail within minutes of their performance starting. Lorna Shore crushed through all three movements of “Pain Remains” to wrap up their set (doing what all savvy entertainers do best) and left the crowd wanting more.

A large black curtain adorned with the Gojira logo was pulled from the stage to the roof. After a quick stage turnover, it was flooded with smoke as Mario Duplantier , Joe Duplantier , Christian Andreu , and Jean-Michel Labadie strode onstage backlit by bright lighting as they launched into “Ocean Planet.” As the curtain dropped and the crowd embraced the band with hails of cheering, the venue felt excited. Gojira mixed their bright backlighting with a combination of flames, confetti, and fireworks while shooting pillars of dry ice 50 feet over the audience from the front of the stage.

Nothing short of a force to be reckoned with, the band launched into “Stranded” three songs into their set, and for most of the audience, the evening had already paid for itself. Labadie spun himself around so many times throughout the Gojira setlist it was hard to tell if he was playing his guitar or attempting to toss it into orbit. Everything about the Gojira set was impeccable. I was saddened that “The Heaviest Matter of the Universe” wasn’t played this evening. Given that that track lives on their 2005 album From Mars to Sirius , amongst so many other incredible songs (many that they played this evening), I can only hope it will make its way back onto their setlist down the road.

What Gojira delivered in bright lighting and intense pyro, Mastodon delivered the goods in a different direction with laser lighting and mind-boggling floor-to-ceiling graphics projected behind the band. Brann Dailor , Brent Hinds , Bill Kelliher , and Troy Sanders (along with touring keyboardist João Nogueira ) launched into Blood Mountain ’s “The Wolf Is Loose” as a similar curtain with the Mastodon logo dropped to the base of the stage, revealing a sinister animated interpretation of their 2006 album cover throughout the song. There was some pyro during Mastodon’s set, but less so than Gojira. A twenty-foot-tall fuzzy monster walked about on stage behind the band during Circle of Cysquatch,” its single iridescent eye gazing out into the crowd as the song culminated. Many animations projected behind Mastodon were quite sinister, lifting from album cover themes and some song titles—lots of tentacles, HP Lovecraft -style lurker from beyond eyeballs, and unearthly terrains and territories.

Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders were all very animated this evening, delivering lots of high kicking and guitar posturing throughout their performance. This evening felt like a treat for older fans; a lot of deep cuts got played, older material that has fallen off their setlists of late as they have been out promoting their latest double album, Hushed and Grim . As the band wrapped up their set with the mighty “Blood and Thunder,” it struck me that my first time seeing Mastodon was 18 years ago, playing at the same venue in the summer when they opened for Iron Maiden . “Blood and Thunder” blew me away at that show, and it did the same again tonight.

While opinions on Mastodon and Gojira can vary amongst fans, there are similarities between the two bands. Aside from their behind-the-scenes friendship (they have toured together numerous times as of this writing), both bands have been around for about 25 years, and both have maintained a continuing line-up of the same people for that same time. Gojira replaced a bassist in ’98, and Mastodon replaced a short-lived vocalist in 2000. In an era when band members can fall in and out every few years, there is something to applaud for Mastodon and Gojira; both acts are pushing a quarter of a century, and both bands boast a very passionate fan base. With the lawns closed off, the estimate this evening was 8,000 people in attendance!

Metal audiences are the best; the enthusiasm in audiences at metal shows is different than in other musical genres. The camaraderie amongst the patrons of metal is unlike any other genre of music, and it was undoubtedly in the air this evening.

meth. ‘ SHAME ’ Prosthetic Records

An exploration into one man’s experience of guilt, mental health issues and addiction, SHAME is the second album from Chicago-based experimental noise outfit Meth. This seven-track affair, the follow-up to their 2020 offering Mother of Red Light , blends industrial metal and noise-rock into a bleak, honest soundtrack. Delving into vocalist Seb Alvarez battles with then-undiagnosed bipolar and unchecked addiction issues, SHAME is a raw, honest insight into a man battling many demons. US live dates are planned around the release of the album with further dates to be revealed imminently.

Being As An Ocean ‘ Death Can Wait ’ Out Of Line Music

Never truer than after the last few years, none of us know what is waiting around the corner. On Death Can Wait , the new album from South California melodic post-hardcore crew Being As An Ocean , the message pulsing through each track is one imploring the listener to live in the moment. Accepting death as the unavoidable conclusion to our time on this rock, Being As An Ocean’s message is as focused and urgent as their music. From the piano-led “…Gave It A Voice So That My Heart Could Speak” or the grittier moments which litter tracks like “Flesh and Bone” or recent single “Swallowed By The Earth”, Death Can Wait finds the Californian melodic hardcore crew hitting home a message to live each day to the max. It’s a message that, after six albums, is more relevant now than ever before.

HeavyHex ‘ You Can’t Stay Here ’ Bridge Nine Records

Hardcore has never shied away from tackling emotional subject matters and HeavyHex is no exception to their rule. Their new single, “You Can’t Stay Here” tackles the plight of New York City’s homeless encampment sites and the city’s failed attempt to resolve the issue by forcing the homeless into shelters. A plight that has had an impact on HeavyHex vocalist David Gastiaburo as he explains: “Out of the 2,300 homeless people present during those sweeps, only 119 agreed to go to a shelter and most of them did not stay. Many were forced out with little time to take any of their belongings with them. These are people too, just like us, trying to get by.” The track is typical of the kind of hardcore wares put out by Bridge Nine and is delivered with the kind of passion and raw emotion you would hope given the subject matter. “You Can’t Stay Here” serves as a taster for the hardcore crew’s upcoming album due in April and, on this evidence, expect an album that wastes no time in hammering home its emotional message.

For more information, visit HeavyHex online here

Same Side ‘ Oh No ’ Pure Noise Records

Same Side is the solo project of Kevin Geyer, best known as lead guitarist for alt-rock crew The Story So Far. The latest in a raft of projects Geyer has put his name, and wealth of music talents to, Same Side sees Geyer blend gentle, jangly acoustic guitars with lyrics based around the vocalist’s personal stories. It makes for an honest, vulnerable listen with Geyer himself stating of the album themes: “Thematically, there tends to be some sort of playful dread with my lyrics. You sort of feel like, ‘Oh no, here we go again.’ But ultimately, you can’t just sit around and wait for things to get better. You have to get over it and move on with life.”

For more information, visit Same Side online here

Slope ‘ Freak Dreams ’ Century Media Records

Slope is a German-based hardcore band drawing inspiration from the likes of Beastie Boys , Rage Against The Machine and early Red Hot Chili Peppers . If that’s your bag and you’re looking for an album packed with infectious energy, and massive hooks, Freak Dreams will be right up your street. It’s also the kind of album which steps outside the norm as the band strives to deliver their 360 Funk Vision . Battling the 9-5 grind using thought-provoking lyrics to highlight personal struggles and unsatisfying situations that many face these days, Freak Dreams , is the soundtrack to living outside what is expected of them by society. 11 songs of humungous funk grooves and head-wrecking timings, Freak Dreams will make you realise there is more to life than the 9-5 slog.

For more information, visit Slope online here

Lost Zone ‘ Can’t Keep Running ’ Drakkar Entertainment

Having already shared a teaser for their upcoming album Ordinary Misery due in April, Italian modern metal outfit Lost Zone is back with their new single “Can’t Keep Running”. Wearing their influences proudly on their sleeves, this latest taster at times tips a nod towards Meteora -era Linkin Park , no shock considering their cover of the rock legends iconic “In The End” racked up over half a million views. There are plenty of other influences on show and while it means that “Can’t Keep Running” doesn’t throw up any surprises, as an example of how this kind of thing can be delivered when done well, hopefully, the rest of the album will follow suit.

For more information, visit Lost Zone online here

The Last Dinner Party ‘ Prelude To Ecstasy ’ Island Records

Critics and fans alike have gone batshit over The Last Dinner Party and, listening to their debut album, Prelude To Ecstasy , it’s easy to see why. A mesmerizing band, it’s not often the end result lives up to the buzz but, in the case of The Last Dinner Party, they have proved themselves to be an exception to the rule. Describing ecstasy as an emotion which crosses the gamut of human emotion, the London quintet have created an album which does exactly that. L Devine ‘ Digital Heartifacts ’ AWAL Recordings

L Devine is building up a wealth of praise from artists like Charli XCX , Dua Lipa , Sam Fender and Lewis Capaldi . Digital Heartifacts combines the best elements of those artists wrapped up neatly into one complete package. The songs are moody pop wrapped in emotional themes, self-deprecating and inspired by real-life experiences. Combined it makes for the kind of album which grabs your attention. Tracks like the recent single “If I Don’t Laugh I’ll Cry” epitomize everything wonderful about L Devine and her music. Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, she explains “‘If I Don’t Laugh I’ll Cry’ is about the sweet spot between having a mental breakdown and total liberation. It’s a proper insight into my personality, I usually cope with my struggles and insecurities by finding humour in them.” Digital Heartifacts takes those themes and expands them into an album that music fans will both connect with and find comfort in.

Kid Kapichi ‘ Get Down ’ Spinefarm Records

Kid Kapichi drop their highly-anticipated new album There Goes The Neighbourhood on March 15th and “Get Down” provides the perfect taster. A tale of a sketchy night out, the track is exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Hastings band. The soundtrack to life for many in the UK. Drunken nights out to wipe the memory of another shit, skint week, Kid Kapichi is the sound of British culture in 2024. The perfect soundtrack to scrapping, shagging and drinking, “Get Down” provides the soundtrack to help you when Monday morning rolls around again. A dirty, anthemic and tragically honest appraisal of life in many of Britain’s towns, “Get Down” demonstrates yet again why Kid Kapichi are the ONLY band you need in your life right now.

Florence Black ‘ Bed of Nails ’ AWAL Recordings

Sometimes you just need to be slapped in the face by an album full of huge, dirty riffs and big anthemic rock bangers which is right where Welsh rockers Florence Black come swinging in. Originally scheduled for December, the follow-up to their charting debut Weight of the World slaps the moment it leaves the starting gate. For fans of bands like Black Stone Cherry and Seether , the former Planet Rock Award winners are kickstarting 2024 with an album of absolute fist-pumpers. Hulking great riffs scrap with Tristan Thomas ’ dirty whiskey and tobacco-laced vocals with the winner ending up being the listener who gets the best of both worlds. Galloping rock anthems like “Taxman” are the order of the day Bed of Nails is jam-packed with them. For a three-piece, Florence Black makes a huge noise, and having laid waste to most of the major rock festivals in 2023, Bed of Nails will do their already solid reputation as one of Britain’s most electrifying rock bands no harm whatsoever.

Levels ‘ Pulse EP ’ Sharptone Records

The diversity on the recent Download Festival announcement (which you can read here ) has caused a fair bit of uproar on the t’internet. However, far from being stuck in the past, organisers have pulled together a line-up which reaches all corners of the alternative music spectrum which is exactly what Central Arkansas crew Levels are trying to capture on their latest EP. Throwing elements of metal, rock, pop, and R&B into one big bubbling pot, the end result is an album that you can throw down to as much as you can singalong to. Having performed alongside the likes of Beartooth and Oceano , tracks like “Realign” could as easily see the band fit at home in front of those whose musical palette enjoys electronic music with a bit of grit. Pulse is the sound of a band who are open-minded enough to experiment with their sound so if your Spotify playlist has as much Prodigy in it as it does I Prevail , then make sure you find some space in there for this gem.

Sanjay ‘ Ancestral Visions ’ Purple Condor Records

Hailing from the Joshua Tree in California, multi-faceted artist, Sanjay is about to take you on a real journey with his debut album. Inspired by a trip to a silent meditation retreat in Peru in 2019, Ancestral Visions consists of stories of heartbreak, transformation and rebirth. Those stories are delivered to a cocktail of live electronica, found sounds of the jungle and a variety of native percussive instruments and acoustic guitars. The kind of album you can put on and before you know it, you’re completely lost in the intricate sounds, Ancestral Visions feels like a very personal album. However, while it might be a journey only this creator has taken, the experiences have been captured effortlessly.

Enterprise Earth ‘ Death: An Anthology ’ MNRK Heavy

On their fifth album, tech death metal troop Enterprise Earth take the opportunity to approach the subject of death from a different angle. Facing the subject matter head-on, the band do so under the weight of jarring techy guitar, stinking guttural vocals and brain-bending soundscapes. They’re joined on this journey by a Who’s Who of heavy music including Trivium vocalist Matt Heafy on album closer “Curse of Flesh.” They’re also joined by Spite ’s Darius Tehrani on “The Reapers Servant.” The result is an album that is as savage and gut-pummellingly heavy as it is soothing and intricate. Comparisons to the tech-metal giants like Meshuggah aren’t far off the mark so if you like your death metal to melt your sense while simultaneously pounding you in the guts, Death: An Anthology will be right up your street.

Serpents Unleash New Single “The Void”

Serpents unleashes a raw blend of heavy riffs and relentless energy and has released their latest sonic masterpiece, “The Void.”

' src=

Serpents , the ferocious quintet erupting from Poland’s pulsating metalcore scene, unleashes a raw blend of heavy riffs and relentless energy and has released their latest sonic masterpiece, “ The Void .” Emerging at the end of 2023, this innovative band has swiftly captured the attention of music enthusiasts with their genre-defying sound.

Serpents’ musical journey has been nothing short of captivating, fusing the raw intensity of modern metalcore with the pulsating rhythms of electronica to create a sound that’s both aggressively unique and sinister. Drawing inspiration from a diverse spectrum of influences, including the likes of Nine Inch Nails , Spiritbox , and Northlane , Serpents’ sound is a dynamic tapestry of layers and textures that pushes the boundaries of conventional music.

In their brief yet impactful career, Serpents has left an indelible mark with three compelling singles released in 2023: “ Tangled ,” “Self-Made Suffering,” and “Hourglass.” These releases not only showcased Serpents’ dedication to pushing artistic boundaries but also provided a glimpse into the rich palette of emotions and experiences captured in their music.

For fans of genre-blurring acts, where metalcore converges with atmospheric elements, Serpents offers a fresh and exhilarating listening experience. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend heavy, intricate guitar work with electronic elements creates an immersive atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

“The Void” promises to be a thrilling addition to Serpents’ repertoire, drawing influences from the likes of Sleep Token . The single plunges listeners into a realm of shadowy, melodic depths, offering an auditory assault that shatters the conventions of modern metalcore, redefining its limits with every thunderous note.

Get ready for an exhilarating experience as Serpents hit the road for their upcoming European tour, sharing the stage as the opening act for Ektomorf . Tickets can be found here .
