Batangas Food Trip: Must-Try Dishes In Batangas

Table of Contents

W hen I want to disconnect from everything and take a quick break – with no hesitation – I’d head over to Batangas and unwind.

Batangas Bulalo at Plum Restaurant

Besides being my mother’s hometown, one can truly enjoy Taal Lake’s solitude and sweeping views in San Nicolas town, the historical Taal Basilica, the stunning beaches in Catalagan, and the endless outdoor activities for adrenaline seekers.

Longanisang Taal

And with just a 3 to 4-hour drive from the Metro, we can all enjoy a quick getaway trip and the chance to eat some of the irresistible delicacies worthy of a try.

As a proud Batangueña, I am humbled to share with you the best dishes and delicacies our province has to offer (in no particular order) – and hopefully, you get to try them soon as well! Read along, you guys!

Sinaing na Tulingan

Sinaing na Tulingan photo via Bunsos Fruits Pasalubong Binalot on the Go FB Page

One of the most famous delicacies in Batangas is the “Sinaing na Tulingan.” Believe it or not, you’ll see most kitchen households with this dish — cooked inside a palayok or clay pot — which they say is the best way to make it more flavorful.

This dish comprises a bullet tuna, a saltwater type, and a kamias, and then is added with salt, garlic, and freshly ground pepper for flavor. You can even add a siling mahaba if you want to add a bit of spice.

Sinigang na Maliputo

Batangas is also known for its Maliputo Festival, celebrated every August 8th, celebrating its famous freshwater fish, which can only be found in Taal Lake.

Launched in 1997, during the first term of mayor Epifanio “Peping” Sandoval, this festival has paved the way to further promote its significant product and bustling town. This fish can be quite pricey because of its rarity and reach high as PHP600 per kilo.

For a change, I recommend trying the famous Sinigang na Maliputo recipe, mixed with different kinds of vegetables and flavored with unripe tamarind, to achieve the right  ‘kick’ of a sour taste.

Suman is everywhere, but Sumang Batangas is one-of-a-kind. It’s known for its chewy, nutty taste and is best eaten cold or hot. Suman and kapeng barako is the perfect combo if you’re here in Batangas.

Locals say that glutinous rice is the secret behind this famous rice cake. This is probably one of the best snacks I can eat almost every day. Also, don’t forget to include this on your Batangas Pasalubong list 🙂

Looking for the Best Lomi in Batangas? This province is surrounded by towns that punch above its weight regarding Lomi.

Batangas Lomi

You’d probably see this “Number 1 Lomis” in the metro, but everywhere, you can only taste the authentic Lomi here in Batangas.

This dish stands out from the rest because of its tender noodles and rich sauce. You can choose your toppings from a boiled egg, vegetables, onion leeks or chopped scallions, chicken meat, liempo , chicharron, squid balls, and pork liver.

Suppose you’d ask how a Batangueno makes his own separate mixture. In that case, it’ll be perfect for mixing a calamansi, soy sauce, and of course, a dash of chili pepper for that flavorful combination altogether.

Classic Bulalo

We’ve eaten Bulalo countless times and had our fair share of favorites. Most say that the best ones are in Tagaytay, while the latter prefer to dine in high-end restaurants with their modern dish. However, if you want that good ‘ol Bulalo cooked traditionally, visit Batangas.

The recipe comprises a beef shank, bone marrow, salt, fish sauce, and pepper to taste. This might sound simple, but the secret is cooking the perfect bulalo because they are boiled and how the meat is tenderized.

Tapang Taal

Tapsilog Taal

A lot have tried making their version of tapa in the comfort of their own kitchen, but nothing beats Tapang Taal’s flavor.

Although they’re made from the usual pork, it’s marinated with soy sauce, garlic, pepper, calamansi juice, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar for that unique taste. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Have it a try and see what I mean!

Adobo Sa Dilaw

Adobo sa Dilaw

I’m also amused by how the Batangueños masterfully made a twist of our country’s famous Adobo cooked in soy sauce and vinegar. The first time I saw this dish, I thought it was a Tinola (Filipino chicken recipe) with no soup! LOL!

This dish is basically cooked like the usual adobo, but the adobo sa dilaw is cooked using a luyang dilaw. This is one of my favorite dishes in Batangas, served with 2-3 cups of steamed rice…or more! Yummm!

Tinapa by Shubert Ciencia via Flickr CC

I used to hate the smell of Tinapa when I was younger, but it turns out to be my favorite Batangueño Dishes right now (best paired with vinegar, of course.)

Not to mention, you can buy lots of tinapa, especially in the town of Lemery, known to celebrate the Tinapa Festival every 14th of May.

Don’t forget to buy a pack and take it home! Just ensure they’re wrapped well in a newspaper so the smell won’t spread throughout the long commute.

Bagoong Balayan

Bagoong Balayan

Don’t we just love bagoong? But let me tell you, you’ll fall in love with Bagoong Balayan more! Being a known manufacturer of anchovies in Batangas, their bagoong is made of anchovies and salt blended together and stored in containers called tapayan or a sizeable earthen jar for partial fermentation.

Usually, the locals enjoy their bagoong by adding sautéed garlic in cooking oil. So, if they only have fried fish or pork for a meal, this is the perfect combo! Try eating with bare hands too!

From the bus terminals, souvenir shops, and markets, you’ll see the famous Panutsa or Peanut Brittle. Aside from suman, this is another perfect snack to nibble on while stuck in traffic! And perfect for those who love nuts!

Panutsa from Taal photo via Taal Batangas FB Page

Batangas, without a doubt, is my favorite province. Whether I chose to have a me-time or reunite with my relatives, this province has many things to offer I wouldn’t get tired of returning to. The locals are so friendly and hospitable, you’d even want to live here!

So, if you ever get the chance to take a short getaway trip here, try some of the delicacies mentioned above. You won’t regret it!

If tourism were a grand feast, Batangas offers a massive buffet filled with exquisite and delightful options that fit various preferences of visitors — historical sites, mouthwatering dishes from homegrown restaurants, spectacular summits, stunning beaches and secluded camping grounds, and wonderful underwater worlds! Whew!

The best part about exploring Batangas is that it’s very accessible from Manila, making it a no-brainer choice for weekend getaways, summer escapades, barkada road trips and company outings! Here are some of the best tourist spots to visit and things to do in Batangas.

Note: Opening hours might change without prior notice, so please check the official websites or Facebook pages before visiting. We also included links to Agoda so you could conveniently check out resorts and hotels in the area.

Due to its popularity, Anilao has become the poster image of the municipality of Mabini . It has become synonymous with the town it represents. In reality, however, Anilao is just a barangay and many of the resorts that are often tagged “Anilao” are located in other nearby villages.

lemery batangas food trip

Tucked in the northern coast of the Calumpang Peninsula, it is one of the areas in Batangas that underwent development ahead of others. Regarded as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines, Anilao’s rich and colorful underwater scenery attracts visitors more than its shores.

Anilao is also a setting-off point to other attractions including Sombrero Island and Masasa Beach in Tingloy, the only island municipality of Batangas. It is also the jump-off point to Mt. Gulugod Baboy , a relatively easy hike, perfect for trekking beginners. Some hikers head to the beaches to take a refreshing swim after the climb.

The municipality of Tingloy occupies Maricaban Island, making it the only municipality outside mainland Batangas. It’s situated off the tip of the peninsula and sandwiched between Balayan Bay and Batangas Bay.

For a long time, the isolated town has been off the radar until beachgoers heard the news about Masasa Beach , a pristine stretch of fine sand and clear waters. Today, Masasa Beach is one of the most popular attractions in the province, attracting thousands of tourists from Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

The well-known Sombrero Island, which is often associated with Anilao, is actually part of Tingloy too. Another beach destination in Tingloy is Oscar Beach, sometimes called by the locals as Oscar Island. All these pieces of tropical paradise make Tingloy one of the fastest-rising tourist destinations in the country.

3. Laiya, San Juan

lemery batangas food trip

Laiya Aplaya , or simply Laiya, is another seaside barangay that pretty much represents the whole town of San Juan in terms of tourism. In fact, many beach resorts in other parts of the municipality — like those in nearby Barangay Hugom — are also being marketed with the term Laiya in tow to catch more attention or spark interest.

The long and wide stretch of fine light-colored sand harbors numerous resorts and hotels, ranging from budget to high-end. It has become one of the go-to weekend destinations and a venue for events such as company outings and even weddings.

5. Club Balai Isabel

Best known for providing a front-row seat to the majestic Taal Volcano and Taal Lake, this nine-hectare property harbors Aqua Park , a floating water park that features one of the tallest waterslides in Southeast Asia!

And if that is not enough yet to fill your day with exciting activities, the resort provides other water sports activities like jet-skiing, kayaking, sailing, banana boat rides, and more. You can visit on a day trip or extend the fun by staying overnight.

lemery batangas food trip

Address: Club Balai Isabel, Barangay Banga, Talisay, Batangas Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily, Day Trip Hours)

Klook is offering a discounted day pass voucher and overnight voucher. Both are inclusive of Aqua Park access. The day pass voucher also covers lunch, snacks, access to swimming pools and other resort amenities aside from 1-hour Aqua Park pass.

6. Verde Island

lemery batangas food trip

Verde Island , also called Isla Verde , is nestled in the middle of Verde Island Passage, hailed as the center of the world’s marine biodiversity by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study.

Just 45 minutes off the Batangas mainland, this sleepy fishing island in Batangas City remains undisturbed by tourism as of today. Most tourist amenities and activities are concentrated in Mahabang Buhangin and Cueva Sitio. With very few resorts, homestays, and restaurants, its rugged shores are almost devoid of tourists. But that’s not to say that this breathtaking island has nothing to offer. In fact, it offers something that not many Luzon destinations can provide — some peace and quiet.

Verde Island is perfect for those who are looking for a serene, back-to-basics kind of beach escape.

lemery batangas food trip

If you are looking for a unique beach destination n Batangas, the municipality of Lobo is notable for its pebble beaches. Instead of shores covered with fine sands, most of the beaches in Lobo, especially in Malabrigo, are carpeted by smooth pebbles and stones.

This has been my family’s secret summer getaway because we like the less crowded beaches. A few years ago, it was quite challenging to travel to Lobo because some parts of the winding road were not yet cemented. But today, it’s easier to reach either from Batangas City or from San Juan.

Despite the development, it’s still tamer and quieter compared to other more developed coastal towns in Batangas. Most of its patrons seek serenity more than anything. As for me, I like that I don’t have to worry about the sand sticking to my hair or my swimwear. Haha!

My family likes walking to the lighthouse in the morning when we visit for an overnight stay. The Malabrigo Point Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Malabrigo) is a National Historical Landmark. In the past, we can freely explore inside and around the lighthouse, but during our recent visit, we can only admire the lighthouse from the outside. We don’t mind because it also serves as a viewpoint, overlooking the sea and the surrounding areas.

8. Taal Heritage Town

lemery batangas food trip

Taal was originally located in what is now the town of San Nicolas near Taal Lake. The former provincial capital was forced to relocate to its present location when the Taal Volcano violently erupted in the mid-18th century.

Although commercialization is apparent, the town center still elicits that strong old town vibe with the well-preserved town hall building and ancestral houses flanking the streets. But the town’s highlight is the Basilica de San Martin de Tours (or simply Taal Basilica ), said to be the biggest Catholic church in Asia. Sitting atop a hill, it definitely commands attention and is an iconic landmark.

If you get hungry, you can try some of Batangas’ signature dishes like the tapang Taal and Taal longganisa . You can order these at Don Juan BBQ near Taal Market, where you can also go food tripping or pasalubong shopping.

If you have more time, you can also check out the Taal-made Barong Tagalong, balisong-making, and Taal embroidery products.

9. Fantasy World, Lemery

lemery batangas food trip

Most tourists assume that Fantasy World is located in Tagaytay because of the close proximity, higher elevation and the backdrop of the rolling hills, but it is, in fact, in the fringes of the municipality of Lemery in Batangas.

It was supposed to be a magnificent theme park poised to rival Disneyland, but the construction was halted. Today, it remains unfinished but not abandoned. It is operational as a photo spot destination, perfect for those whose flights of fancy are filled with either fairy tales or grim (or Grimm) aesthetics. It is also a popular prenuptial shoot location.

The park and some of the rides, which are not operational, will make you yearn for something that is almost within your grasp but is unattainable. Despite the lack of action, the whole place is still Instagram-worthy. It was also the filming location for movies ( Fantastica , Got 2 Believe ) and TV shows ( Majika ).

The highlight of the park is the towering castle, which was the centerpiece of the plan. If you are not afraid of heights, you can climb to the top of the main tower and admire the view of the park and the surrounding areas.

Opening Hours: As of writing, the management doesn’t allow tourists inside the premises anymore. Some visitors just take photos in front of the gate or from a viewpoint along the road. But in the past, the opening schedule was 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entrance Fee: Presently, it is CLOSED to the public until further notice. The entrance fee used to be P100 per person. Getting There: Ride a jeepney or bus from Olivarez/Rotonda to Boundary (Cavite-Batangas boundary). The fare for the jeepney is P25 and for the bus, P39. From the boundary, ride a jeepney bound for Lemery but tell the driver to drop you off at the side of the road leading to the Fantasy World entrance. The fare is P18. You can also charter a tricycle for a special trip, but the rate is steep — P200 per ride.

Lemery also has beach resorts but don’t expect to see white sand. The municipality’s coast is strewn primarily with black volcanic ash. These beach resorts are also a bit far from Fantasy World, which is perched up in the mountains.

10. Views of Taal Volcano

lemery batangas food trip

As the centerpiece of Taal Lake, it is also described as an island (Volcano Island) within a lake (Taal Lake) within an island (Luzon main island). It is certainly scenic and just watching it from afar can be calming, but don’t underestimate its power. It’s very, very active and has the nastiest fiery mouth.

Before the 2020 eruption, the Volcano Island is accessible to tourists who wish to get to the edge of the crater and marvel at this small but mighty nature’s wonder. While you can admire it from Tagaytay, you can go to Talisay to get closer to Taal Lake.

You don’t need to check in to a ridge-perched hotel to have a good look at the lake and volcano. Several establishments like restaurants and shopping centers offer a magnificent view, including the Twin Lakes complex, which is actually located in Laurel, Batangas, even though it is often touted as a Tagaytay attraction.

11. Lipa Heritage Sites and Cuisine

lemery batangas food trip

Lipa might be a highly urbanized city with many modern establishments and infrastructures, but the Batangan identity is never lost. The city boasts historical sites, churches, and signature Batangas cuisine.

Casa de Segunda is a well-preserved ancestral house that echoes the architectural style during the Spanish colonial period. The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian or simply Lipa Cathedral is one of oldest in Batangas and the most visited.

And while you are there, order the Batangas staple merienda — lomi and Lipa-style goto . Coffee lover? Have a sip of Kapeng Barako after a meal.

12. Nasugbu Beaches and Coves

lemery batangas food trip

One of the areas in Batangas that had an early taste of development is Nasugbu. Its seaside villages have flourished into resort villages, which are lined with long-established resorts. Some of its beaches and sand pockets are nestled within exclusive villages and resorts that require membership, connection, or prior booking to access them. These are Tali Beach Subdivision, Punta Fuego, Hamilo Coast, and Canyon Cove among others.

But don’t fret, most beaches, coves, and islands remain accessible even without prior reservation. These are Calayo Beach, Bituin Cove, Pulo Island, and Fortune Island, just to name a few.

13. Fortune Island

lemery batangas food trip

Known for its ruins of Grecian pillars and statues, which remind visitors of its glorious past, Fortune Island was once a luxurious exclusive resort that closed its doors in 2006.

Today, Fortune Island is open to the public. Despite its luxurious past, what draws tourists to the island is its rugged charm. Go cliff jumping, trek to the lighthouse, take lots of photos, do snorkeling, and even go scuba diving. Have fun under the sun while exploring the whole island. If you are swimming, there are two areas where you can swim — the shallow but rough waters (beach) and the calm but deep waters (cliff-diving area).

If you are into diving, some nearby diving sites are the Blue Holes, the Wreck, and Fortune NW. If a day trip is not enough, you may camp overnight on the island. If so, you can do stargazing and astrophotography!

To get to the island, you must register, pay the entrance fee, and charter a boat at Fortune Island Resort on the mainland. Bring your own food and water. Bring your trash with you when you go back to the mainland.

Entrance Fee: P350/pax (Day Trip), P500/pax (Overnight) Jump-Off Point: Fortune Island Resort, Apacible Boulevard, Barangay Wawa, Nasugbu, Batangas Boat Rate: Day Trip P4000 (1-4 pax), P4500 (5-8 pax), P5000 (9-12pax), P5500 (13-15 pax), P6500 (16-20 pax); Overnight P4500 (1-4 pax), P5000 (5-8 pax), P5500 (9-12pax), P6000 (13-15 pax), P7000 (16-20 pax)

14. Calatagan Beach Resorts

lemery batangas food trip

Calatagan is most popular for its beaches and dive sites. This peninsular municipality is best known for its shores, which are strewn with cream-colored sand, lapped up by shallow waters.

The beaches of Calatagan is lined with resorts that cater to different types of travelers and tourists. Most of the resorts are concentrated in these areas: Barangay Bagong Silang, Barangay Santa Ana, Barangay Uno, Barangay Balibago, and Balibago Quilitisan.

The Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort is on the high-end side and is a popular events venue, particularly weddings. Aquaria Water Park attracts those who not only love aqua parks with slides but also beach front experience. Manuel Uy Beach and Ivory Beach are rising beach camping destinations.

It also has sandbars that can be reached by renting a boat from one of the many resorts running along its shoreline.

Aside from the beaches, Calatagan is also famous for its Spanish-era lighthouse, the Cape Santiago Lighthouse , located at the southern tip of the peninsula.

15. Matabungkay, Lian

lemery batangas food trip

Matabungkay may sound “old school” now, but it became well-known for a reason. This strip along the coast of Lian has attracted tourists since the 1950s. In its heyday, it was one of the prettiest, most easily accessible beaches from Manila.

Today, of course, a lot has changed. Other beaches have been “discovered” over the years, pushing Matabungkay to the back seat. But although Matabungkay isn’t as popular as the other Batangan beaches, it remains a go-to place for family outings and group excursions among local tourists.

The long stretch of ash-colored sand is lined with resorts, stores, and houses. But its most striking feature is the dozens of iconic floating bamboo raft cottages.

16. Mt. Maculot

lemery batangas food trip

Maculot in Cuenca is another favorite hiking destination near Manila. Rising over 900 meters asl, Maculot will test your endurance with its steep assaults and rocky features. Aside from the spacious campsite, the other major draws are the summit and the “Rockies”, which both present a picturesque view of Taal Lake, the surrounding towns, and the lush forest.

Take extra precaution when going to the Rockies for photo ops because the wind can get too strong. Crouch or scramble low if you must. Always prioritize safety more than anything else.

If you don’t have a car, Klook is offering a private Maculot day hike tour which covers round-trip transfers from McDonald’s El Pueblo, Ortigas to Mount Maculot, a guide, snacks, and registration fee.

Mount Batulao is another famous peak, thanks to its proximity to Manila. This is one of the most scenic hiking destinations that are easily accessible, just a bus ride away, from the capital. The jump-off point, KC Hillcrest (Evercrest), is located close to the border of Batangas and Cavite.

Much of the trail has easy slopes and the assaults are not too steep, save for the ridgeline near the summit, so Batulao is generally recommended for beginners.

What makes the hike challenging is its bareness, with grasslands covering much of the surface. During the summer months, the hike might be difficult because of the lack of shade. But the trail is punctuated by several rest spots.

You and your companions can book a private day hike tour through Klook if no one in your group knows how to drive. The package is inclusive of the private hike, round trip transportation between McDonald’s El Pueblo and Mount Batulao, registration fee, snacks, and a guide.

Neighboring Mount Talamitam might be shorter than Batulao but the hike involves more assault and steeper climb, especially near the summit. You can forgo taking the almost vertical climb to the summit by opting to go for the winding but longer trail, which is usually taken when descending the mountain. The new jump-off point is at Barangay Kayrilaw. Some hikers do a twin hike of Mount Batulao and Mount Talamitam.

18. Taal Lake Yacht Club

The Taal Lake Yacht Club sounds fancy and intimidating but it welcomes day tour visitors. Docked on the northern shore of Taal Lake, it can be conveniently reached from Tagaytay via Tagaytay-Calamba road and Ligaya Drive. Prior to the 2020 Taal Volcano eruption, the resort was best known for its volcano trek tour packages.

If such tours are no longer available, you can still enjoy water-related activities like sailing and kayaking. They also rent out Hobie catamaran units. It also allows day trip camping and offers tent rental. But if you have your own tent, you can bring it and just pay for the camping site or tent-pitching fee. It also permits photoshoots — non-commercial and commercial.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). The schedule may change without prior notice. Please check the official website or FB page for schedule updates. Entrance Fee (Non-Members): P300/head Rates: P100/day (Camp Site); P500/day (4-Man Tent Rental + P1000 Deposit Fee); P400/day (hut rental, good for 10 pax); P300-350/head (Non-Commercial Shoot); P5000 Royalty Fee + P300-350/head (Commercial Shoot) Contact Details: For corporate events, photoshoots, and other queries, you may contact the management at 0917 838 3726, 0917 123 1403, the official website, and the official Facebook page. Getting There: The most recommended, convenient, and fastest way is via private car. Just take the Tagaytay-Calamba Road and then turn right to Ligaya Drive. Use Google Maps or Waze. The travel time from Tagaytay to TLYC is about 15 minutes.

19. Montemaria Shrine, Batangas City

Overlooking Batangas Bay, the Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center (or simply Montemaria Shrine ) is an extensive religious sanctuary, serving not only as a pilgrimage site and a retreat venue but also as a city landmark and a tourist attraction.

Towering over the whole complex is the colossal Statue of Mary, Mother of All Asia , considered the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary as of this writing.

You can climb to the observation deck to get a breathtaking view of the bay and the surrounding areas including Verde Island, Tingloy, and some parts of Oriental Mindoro.

20. Santo Tomas

lemery batangas food trip

It’s easy to dismiss Santo Tomas as simply a collection of industrial parks, subdivisions, and farmlands, but it also has a lot to offer to curious visitors.

Santo Tomas takes pride in gifting our motherland with one of its most prominent historical figures — Miguel Malvar , known as the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans during the Philippine-American War. The Municipal Hall is fronted by the commanding Miguel Malvar Shrine and Monument , which pays tribute to the homegrown hero. Housed in an adjacent building is the Malvar Library and Museum , which offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of the revolutionary general.

Another key attraction in Santo Tomas is the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio, which draws in thousands of visitors — mostly pilgrims and devotees. The shrine complex is also composed of a circular main church, the bell tower, and the Sanctuary of the Relics of St. Padre Pio, just to mention a few.

Batangas lomi - one of the best Batangas delicacies

Savoring Tradition: 17 BEST Batangas Delicacies to Try

Batangas is known for its beautiful beaches , snorkel and dive sites, and historical attractions including heritage architecture and lighthouse. Aside from these, Batanguenos are also proud of their cuisine. Aside from the ever-popular lomi and bulalo, it offers a wide range of local dishes that showcase the province’s flavors and traditions.

In this article, we’ll guide you to the best Batangas delicacies that you can use when you’re planning on what to eat in Batangas.

1. Batangas Lomi

3. adobo sa dilaw, 4. taghilaw, 5. fried tawilis, 6. sinigang na maliputo, 7. longganisa and tapang taal, 8. sinaing na tulingan, 9. gotong batangas, 10. bulanglang na gulay, 11. tamales ibaan, 12. sinunggaok, 13. pinais na dulong, 14. afritadang batangas, 15. nilupak, 17. bagoong balayan, what to read next:.

Batangas lomi

Batangas lomi is one of the most popular Batangas food that you should try at least once. It features thick egg noodles cooked in a rich, flavorful broth and comes with different toppings, including pork rinds or pork belly, chicken, shrimp, and/or vegetables. It is often garnished with crushed chicharon (pork cracklings) and sliced boiled eggs.

Please enable JavaScript

Batanguenos love to eat it served with a sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili.

When you’re in Batangas, it’s easy to find lomi houses and food stalls across the streets. If you’re looking for tried-and-tested lomi houses, check out Lomi King – the most popular lomi restaurant in Lipa City. Also worth visiting are Corcolon Lomi House (San Jose), Kina Imus Lomi House (Taal), Liam’s Lomi House (Lipa City), and Sizzling Lomi House (Lipa City).

Personally, the best Batangas lomi that we’ve tried is in a regular eatery along the street in Anilao, Mabini. Indulging in a comforting seafood lomi after a swim was fantastic!

Filipino food - bulalo

Bulalo is a popular dish in Batangas and throughout the Philippines. It is a flavorful beef soup made with beef shanks and bone marrow, simmered for hours until the meat is tender and the broth is rich and aromatic. It is also cooked with cabbage, corn, and other vegetables, making it a delicious and nutritious dish to serve with rice.

Bulalo is one of the best Filipino comfort foods and is particularly great to have during the rainy months.

Some of the best bulalo restaurants in Batangas are Rose and Grace Restaurant (Sto. Tomas) and Jorjhane’s House of Lomi and Bulalo (National Highway).

Another one of the best Batangas delicacies that you should try is adobo sa dilaw. It is made with chicken or pork cooked in a tangy, peppery sauce made with turmeric (which locals call “dilaw” or “luyang dilaw”), instead of the soy sauce used in regular adobo. The turmeric gives the dish a distinct yellow color and adds a delicious flavor.

Adobo sa dilaw originated in Taal, and similar to other Batangas dishes, what makes it remarkable is it is easy to make. It’s a staple in many households in this province and served in numerous local restaurants.

Taghilaw is perhaps one of the least-known dishes in Batangas. So if you’re looking for something new to add to your culinary adventure, add taghilaw in your list.

Similar to bopis, it is made of beef or pork innards sautéed in tomatoes, chilies, and onions and then cooked in a vinegar-based broth. It tastes sour and meaty and is often paired with steamed rice.

Innards is not to everyone’s tastes, but if you’re someone who loves these ingredients, then you’ll appreciate the taste of taghilaw.

Fried tawilis is one of the most common dishes in Batangas. It is fried until crispy. Most Batanguenos serve it with bagoong Balayaan, green mangoes, tomatoes, and onions. Others prefer it with a white vinegar dip. It’s a great addition to meals or pulutan.

It’s interesting to learn about tawilis . Officially called sardinella tawilis, this species of fish can only be found in Taal Lake. It’s the only one in the Clupeidae family of fishes known to live in fresh water. These fishes started living in the lake when it was shaped during a volcanic eruption more than 200 years ago. Currently, it breeds in the lake all year round.

Sinigang na Maliputo is one of most beloved Batangas delicacies. In fact, a local festival called Maliputo Festival is celebrated annually in the town of Nicolas, Batangas, to honor this food source and its contribution to the local livelihood of Batanguenos.

Similar to tawilis, maliputo is a type of freshwater fish that can only be found in Taal Lake. It is rare and often sold with a high price tag in local markets. It is often cooked as sinigang — a sour soup made by simmering the meat in a tamarind-based broth with vegetables such as kangkong (water spinach), radish, and tomatoes. The tangy broth complements the tender fish perfectly.

Tapang Taal is a Batangas specialty that consists of marinated and dried pork. The meat is sliced thinly, marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, calamansi juice, garlic, and spices, and then air-dried or sun-dried. Compared to the usual tapa found in the metro, Tapang Taal is sweeter and more garlicky.

Similar to Tapang Taal, Longganisang Taal has a strong garlicky flavor and lots of fat.

Tapang Taal and Longganisang Taal are usually served with fried rice and egg, along with native dipping sauce (vinegar or soy sauce with onions, calamansi, and fresh chili). Have it for breakfast or any time of the day along with kapeng barako and you’re good to go!

Sinaing na Tulingan is one of the most popular Batangas delicacies. It is made with bullet tuna (locally known as “tulingan”), a type of saltwater fish found in coastal towns in Batangas. The fish is slow-cooked in a clay pot with kamias and salt. The resulting dish is salty and delicious, perfect with steamed rice.

This dish has a long shelf life, even without refrigeration.

You may already be familiar with goto, a type of rice porridge served from breakfast to midnight. Gotong Batangas is different. Instead of glutinous rice, this soup is made with beef tripe and innards and then topped with green onions.

Gotong Batangas is served with steam rice, along with hot chili and calamansi. A comforting soup enjoyed all year round, it is one of the best Batangas dishes you should try.

Batangas has an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, and so it’s no wonder you’ll find this healthy vegetable stew in this province. It is made from a medley of veggies such as squash, papaya, sitaw (string beans), sigarillas, okra, and eggplant, which is boiled and then seasoned with bagoong isda (anchovy paste) or patis (fish sauce).

Batangas-style bulanglang na gulay is similar to bulanglang in Pampanga . It is often served with rice and other fried dishes.

Tamales is one of the heritage dishes passed down by the Spaniards during the Spanish colonial period. The best tamales in Batangas is found in the town of Ibaan (hence “tamales Ibaan”). It is a savory rice cake dish made with ground rice, coconut milk, and various fillings such as chicken, eggs, peanuts, and annatto which gives it a rich reddish color. The mixture is wrapped in banana leaves and steamed until it becomes firm and fragrant.

You can easily find tamales Ibaan in local markets. Not to be confused with tamales Taal, which is a type of rice snack or “suman sa lihiya.”

If you love classic dinuguan, wait til you taste sinunggaok! Sinunggaok is a regional version of dinuguan served in Batangas and other nearby provinces. What makes it different is that instead of offal and entrails, it uses pork meat as main ingredient. Sometimes chicken or beef is also used. Tomato is used to sour the dish and chunks of papaya are also added for extra nutrition.

This savory dish is one of the must-try Batangas delicacies you should know about.

Pinais na dulong is one of the most-beloved food in Batangas. It is made of dulong (also called dilis or anchovies) slow cooked in a claypot and then wrapped in banana leaves. It is served with a squeeze of calamansi and slices of tomatoes on the side.

As with other Batangas delicacies in this list, it is often eaten with rice.

It’s often said that no fiesta in Batangas is complete without afritadang Batangas. This delectable stew is made of pork  and various vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, red bell pepper, and green peas, cooked in a thick, flavorful sauce.

Nilupak is one of the most popular snacks in Batangas, particularly in the town of Agoncillo. Batangas-style nilupak is made of mashed cassava, ground peanuts, peanut butter, condensed milk, rice crispies, and coconut.

It is healthy and filling and a great addition to your merienda favorites.

Suman is one of the most popular Batangas food, and it is often eaten as merienda or bought as pasalubong for family and friends. Batangas suman is essentially sweet and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. It is best served warm, sprinkled with brown sugar and grated coconut.

Pair it with a cup of hot tsokolate or kapeng barako for a perfect and filling merienda.

Bagoong Balayan is a well-known product of Batangas. This condiment makes for a great food souvenir from your trip to the province.

The town of Balayan produces the best-tasting dilis (anchovies). This is used to make the bagoong. Typically, dilis, galunggong, or malansi is fermented in tapayan jars for 6 hours to produce that sharp, salty sauce that Filipinos love.

Use the Bagoong Balayan as a flavor enhancer or dipping sauce. For those who enjoy bold and salty flavors, it can be a delightful addition to their culinary repertoire, especially when exploring the distinct flavors of Batangas cuisine.

Caleruega Church has beautiful architecture and a tranquil natural environment that makes it ideal for religious activities and spiritual retreats. In fact, it has become a well-known wedding venue.

Caleruega is not just a church but a retreat center surrounded by lush scenery. Its main building is called the Transfiguration Chapel. This chapel has a nice colonial design and a peaceful ambiance. This is the most photographed part of the property and where most couples choose to wed.

  • Book a Caleruega Church tour and explore other Tagaytay and Batangas attractions

Aside from the main building, you can visit the other interesting sections of the complex during your visit. Some of these are the Fountain Compass, the Tent Chapel of Transfiguration, St. Dominic’s Point, Kampo Terraces and Amphitheater, and the Dominicum’s grand stairway. One of the buildings in Fantasy World, Batangas

Fantasy World was meant to be the Philippine version of Disneyland. It’s supposed to be the largest and grandest theme park in the country. However, this ambitious project has remained unfinished. Fantasy World has never opened as a theme park. According to local stories and rumors, the Japanese owner had financial problems and, therefore, stopped the construction years ago.

Despite being a failed project, Fantasy World is still a favorite Batangas tourist spot and a frequent filming location. Its large fairytale castle, medieval-themed structures, and sad story have managed to attract many tourists.

  • Book a Fantasy World tour to explore this Disneyland-like attraction

You can still access Fantasy World if you pay the minimal entrance fee. But it’s not a functional theme park, so there are no rides or shows. With its intact medieval architecture and lush surroundings, Fantasy World is still very scenic.

While here, you can walk around, enter the fairytale-like buildings and take photos. One popular spot in the abandoned park is the hanging bridge connected to two treehouses. You can climb to the top of the treehouses and enjoy the views of Batangas, including the Taal Volcano.

Fantasy World is located along Diokno Highway in Lemery, Batangas. A local homeowners association is managing and operating the property.

Facade of the Taal Basilica in Batangas

Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest Catholic Church in Asia.

Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in 1856.

The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight!

Taal Basilica is a popular wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.

When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10 meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at the center.

Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.

Inside the Taal Volcano’s caldera lies the beautiful Taal Lake, which surrounds more than 40 craters and cones. In the middle of this lake sits Volcano Island. At the center of Volcano Island is another lake referred to as the Main Crater Lake.

Taal Volcano has erupted many times throughout history. It remains to be one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines.

The main tourist activity around Taal used to be trekking to the main crater on foot or a horse. Due to safety reasons, the local government currently prohibits Taal Volcano trekking tours. However, you can still enjoy Taal Volcano panoramas from vantage points in the lakeshore towns of Talisay and San Nicolas or when you book Tagaytay hotels . These towns have many restaurants, cafes, and small resorts that offer great food and amazing views of Taal Volcano.
