Trek was founded in 1976. They’re well-known for their work with Lance Armstrong in the late ’90s, and they have a good reputation in terms of designing and manufacturing excellent bikes. They were the first company to pay women the same amount as men for racing at a World Cup level.

They’re also starting to offer a range of eco-friendly products, designing bikes for those on a low budget to encourage cycling over driving. Overall, they’re a good company with a great track record.

They’re known for their generous lifetime warranties on frames and 2-year warranties on parts – which we’ll go into in more detail a little later.

Trek offers bikes across a huge price range – from around $450-$500 dollars, right through to $12,000 or more. That covers all skill levels – from beginner to pro – and they also make bikes for kids.

Trek offers a big range, so they’re not as specialized as, say, Evil (who produces a small range of bikes suited for tougher trails, like Evil the Wreckoning ). They’re quite close in terms of quality and price to Santa Cruz and Giant (you can read more about how Trek compares to Giant in our brand comparison here ).

You could also compare them to Diamondback in terms of quality, although Diamondback doesn’t offer as many entry-level options as Trek.

What kind of bike is the Trek FX 3 Disc?

The FX 3 Disc is a hybrid bike, designed to be used on your commute, on pavements, or on rail trail. It’s super-lightweight, which makes it ideal for public transport. It’s ideal if you want to get fit and get places quickly at the same time.

The Marlin 8 is a mid-range mountain bike with a lot of options. While it’s an overall simple bike, it’s perfect for both a daily commute and an adventure in rougher terrain.

It is a little bit more expensive and heavier than the FX 3, but it looks like it would be able to handle rougher terrain at a smoother pace. A more enjoyable adventure is often worth a little extra cash. 

The Haanjo 2 from Diamondback is another budget mountain bike that’s great for both on-road and off-road adventures. It’s sturdy and capable of handling most things you throw at it.

It’s great for someone who just needs a good reliable entry-level bike or someone who doesn’t want to spend 1000s of dollars just to enjoy one of their favorite hobbies.

I will say the overall style of the bike feels like it’s geared towards a younger audience.

We definitely think so!

The Trek FX 3 Disc isn’t a perfect bike. You may need to make some swaps (for example, the saddle). You might find the extras you want, like the Blendr System technology to attach lights or smart devices, or the Bluetooth sensor for fitness tracking, bumps the price up quite a bit. It’s also not the cheapest bike out there – there are definitely lower-priced options available.

However, we still think it’s a great bike for beginners, and it’s worth spending extra for. The materials are good-quality, but still lightweight. We like the fact that there are fenders and mounts already installed, and the fact that the cabling runs through the frame makes it look sleek.

It’s a comfortable ride on most terrains, and we really like the fact that it’s safe – having good-quality brakes that can handle hills and slippery surfaces is really important for all bikes, but especially those commuting in high-traffic areas. 

We would recommend this bike for anyone, but particularly for beginners – it might just give you the cycling bug.

I bought a Trek FX 3 last year as a commuter bike and have to say it’s been great. My commute is pretty flat so I mostly stay in the big ring and the middle of the cassette (gears 4 to 7), so it’s a smooth and easy ride. On the few occasions I’ve encountered hills I’ve gone up them without having to strain.

I opted to swap the stock tyres for Schwalbe Marathons because I’ve had good experience with those before; maybe an unnecessary upgrade but London roads can be a minefield of broken glass and debris, so I appreciated the extra confidence. Additionally, I added Bontrager mudguards, a Topeak rack to clip my panniers to and a kickstand. Definitely good investments!

The saddle is fine for me for the time it takes to get the office (about an hour), but I can imagine on longer rides it might start to feel hard.

My only complaint, which you mention in the review, is that the paint chips easily. I’ve not ridden it much on gravel – a couple of times, for less than a mile – and the down tube has several noticeable chips.

As I say, it’s a great bike and thoroughly recommended. But be aware that the new 2022 model has a different drivetrain, replacing the 2×9 set-up with 1×10.

The newly upgraded Trek FX 3 Disc is one of the top choices for fitness enthusiasts and not just for commuter riders.

Despite the hybrid bike’s purpose of perimeter riding, we have tested it in rough terrain for 2 months and are always surprised at the results.

The Trek FX 3, which focuses on commuting performance, has a wider range of uses in terms of body weight and reasonable geometric design. Of course, my favorite is the 32c tire, which has been improved in terms of riding stability and comfort. Perfect balance.

According to our review, the FX3’s steeper seat tube angle (74°) keeps you upright and more comfortable when you’re riding.

If there is one downside that must be found, it is the lack of a dropper post, which can lead to more noticeable bumps in the face of rough roads with potholes, but at the same time, the 6.8Trail will make your steering more stable.

Let’s take a look at the FX3 tires, the 32c slender tires, what kind of experience will it bring to you?

During the two months of testing, I felt the wind brushing my ears. Of course, this has a lot to do with its lightweight body, but its 32c tires also play a role that cannot be ignored.

Although there is a certain gap with professional road bikes in terms of speed, its speed in the same type (such as FX2) will satisfy me.

Based on the interest of many cycling enthusiasts, we also specially went to the wet and muddy road for testing during the riding test. We thought it would be a great challenge.

Unexpectedly, the hydraulic disc of FX3 played its role to the extreme. Great effect, showing extremely stable characteristics in braking.

As we all know, in fast riding, shifting is an issue we have to consider. The 1×10 transmission system of the FX3 means more functions and easier shifting, which allows us to have a more concise shifting experience during riding.

In conclusion, on smooth and less technical roads, we think the Trek FX3 is adequate.

In this review, we came to the relatively flat gravel trails, and the gravel of the road surface made us a little worried about the various performances of the FX3. Surprisingly, the FX3’s overall light body gave our testers great control over some big obstacles.

If you want to show off your riding skills in such terrain, the FX3’s tight chainstay length allows you to lift the front half of it with ease (our testers also experimented with it).

Although I live in a remote place, because I love cycling, even though the road has a very difficult country trail for me at the beginning, I still ride my bike to work (after all, it is very environmentally friendly) .

Personally, I prefer to choose Alpine Blue to Deep Dark Blue Fade, because the gradient color makes it look more mysterious.

Let’s take a closer look. The FX3 has a built-in mount. If you need to travel, you must bring your camping equipment. This user-friendly design brings you convenience.

In addition, it has two water bottle mounting holes, so that you will not be interrupted by lack of moisture during the ride.

The overall FX3’s internal cabling design gives us the impression it’s clean and tidy, and it’s easier to keep it clean.

The FX3 is a hybrid bike built for comfort and utility, so its geometry is relatively fixed among comfort-focused bikes. However, the Fork used by the FX3 is the FX Carbon, which is lighter in weight.

Jumping up to the FX3’s head angle (71.5°), I also had my own experience that this steeper head angle made my ride on flat terrain feel sharper (probably my illusion).

If you are a rider who is more concerned with riding comfortably.

We found that the FX3’s Effective top tub, the relatively compact Effective top tub, can flex the arms for riders with longer arms, which is not good for long rides.

So look carefully at the size chart when choosing an FX3 to choose a bike that fits your body.

Not only that, the looser seat tube angle allows our testers to easily maintain an upright ride while riding, which appeals to me.

In addition, we also measured the length of the Chainstay length of the FX3, the compact Chainstay length of the FX3 (45cm), this does not have much effect on short uphill, but the long uphill road will cause some obstacles, of course, in my opinion, More than 90% of commuter roads do not have such troubles.

When we look at the Shimano Deore 1×10 drivetrain, one might think it doesn’t have the wide speed range of the FX2, but we have to mention that it reduces messy shifting by ditching the front derailleur, allowing the FX3 Shifting is easier to operate.

I personally think it’s a laudable improvement for those who use it for commuting and fitness.

Compared with the 1X11 drivetrain, the Trek FX2’s 1X10 drivetrain, with a maximum sprocket of 46 teeth, has some impact on the transmission efficiency, so in the eyes of the rider who wants the hybrid bike to ride faster, this is a component that needs to be lifted.

The daily commuter rider didn’t mind the 1X10 drivetrain and thought it was a very reasonable drivetrain configuration. Of course, given its intended use, we also consider it an excellent component for the price of the Trek FX2.

While one might think the 11-46 cassette would be a bit difficult for long climbs, on a daily commute it probably won’t be that much, so I guess it’s irrelevant.

While I’m happy with the FX3 drivetrain, it would have been better if it could be increased to 1×11, or a little more.

Equally important is the bike’s braking equipment, this FX3 uses Shimano RT26 hydraulic disc brakes. It may not seem advanced now, but at this price, the Shimano RT26 is second to none.

We spent at least two days testing the effectiveness of Shimano RT26 hydraulic disc brakes, because in our opinion, good brakes guarantee adequate stopping power in any situation.

As the more advanced hydraulic brakes out there, the Trek FX 3 uses a Shimano RT26, which isn’t a very good component. But since it’s on a $1,000 budget, it’s an option you can’t go wrong with.

On a slippery rainy day, when the speed increased to 35Km/h, the road braking distance was only extended by 40%, and we were satisfied with the result.

Of course, the most difficult thing is that under full load, due to gravity, it can also provide sufficient braking force, which undoubtedly makes us believe that it can be a touring bike.

The difficulty of adjustment is also very low. We check the manual of the bicycle and simply turn the adjustment screw, which is not a very difficult task.

Therefore, in terms of braking, the FX3 is not only sensitive in braking response, but also extremely simple in operation. We think it is a bike of the same type and with similar price braking that is more prominent.

Tires and Wheels

The 700c×32c tires on this FX3 bike are fast on the pavement and are also great for long or short rides on city trails and light gravel.

It’s worth noting that the FX3 uses a Bontrager H2 Comp, which is a tubeless tire. So it is relatively heavy. But its 30tpi makes it softer in character, which will make up for the shock of not having a dropper post.

At the same time, because it is a wire bead, it has puncture protection and good wear resistance, and the updated tread design provides confident traction for smooth rolling.

If you are a fan of changing tires, then the quick-release function of FX3 is absolutely suitable for you. Its quick-release function will make it easier and more convenient for you to change to the right tire.

At the same time, the 32c tire width will allow you to experience wind-like speeds in smooth road riding.

However, on steep and gravel roads, it may have difficulty for beginners. However, this is a commuter and fitness-focused hybrid bike, and I think you’ll be riding it on the road by the coast, blowing the sea breeze, looking at the ocean for aerobics, imagine a scenario like this, I might It will ignore the problem.

If we don’t test, just look at FX3 and FX2 with our own eyes, except for the change of color appearance, other changes are not big.

Through the test, we can get that the FX3 32c tires make it faster than the FX2 when riding on the road. Some people may think that the stability of the 32c tires may be lacking, but in our test, there is no problem.

From the perspective of the transmission system, the FX2 2×9 transmission system makes the speed selection range wider.

Citizens of 53 countries can now enter Russia’s western-most region on an e-visa

On July 1, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorized entry into the Kaliningrad region by e-visa, according to its website.

To apply for a visa, potential visitors have to fill out an application form on the website of the consular department of the Russian Foreign Ministry and attach a photo. The application can be made no later than four and no earlier than 20 days before the expected date of entry. The visa is issued in four days, regardless of holidays and weekends.

The visa is issued for a 30-day period for stays in the region of no longer than eight days. The purpose of travel can be tourism, business, or humanitarian reasons. The visa, however, is not valid for travel to other parts of the Russian Federation. It covers only the city and region of Kaliningrad, which form a Russian exclave wedged between Poland and Lithuania, separated from the rest of Russia.

By July 4, more than 2,000 applications for an e-visa to Kaliningrad had been submitted, said Alla Ivanova, head of the regional agency for international and interregional relations.

An identical e-visa regime exists for entry into Vladivostok, via land and sea checkpoints. And since Sept. 1, 2018, the scheme been extended to airports across the entire Far Eastern Federal District.

Everything you wanted to know about Kaliningrad

The Kaliningrad region is the westernmost part of the endless Russia. It could have been an ordinary city, like many others, only it is not. This region finds itself on the Baltic sea coast, sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland. Its history tells us that it has never been ordinary for Kaliningrad, as the region changed hands multiple times, most recently after WWII when the German Königsberg was eventually transformed into the Russian Kaliningrad.

So, what else than a quirky history can Kaliningrad offer you? That's exactly what you'll find in this article, as we will guide you past the seven coolest things to do in Kaliningrad. For the ones of you still wondering how it all went in the past, we will start with a short history of the region.

From Königsberg to Kaliningrad

The early days of Königsberg

The Prussians, a Baltic tribe, are considered the native population of the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. In the early days, their small but fortified settlement on the banks of the Pregolya River was called Twangste. In 1255, this place was conquered by the knights of the Teutonic Order. They founded a castle here and gave it the name Königsberg. It was known as a prosperous place, where trade flourished.

Despite the construction of a defensive ring of gates and fortifications around Königsberg, the city has been captured numerous times, like during the Seven Years' War in the 18th century, when Königsberg fell into the hands of the Russian Empire for the first time. The Russians had ruled for only four years over Königsberg, before Emperor Peter III returned it to Prussia under the terms of the peace treaty concluded in 1762.

A flourishing city

Suffering again under the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War, peace has never been a long-time visitor of Königsberg. But as of the 19th century things gradually started to improve in the city, with a growing population, industrialisation, and expansion beyond the defensive ring. New stations, churches and suburban areas were constructed. Present-day remains from this period are for example the neo-Gothic Philharmonic Hall and the Puppet Theatre – both of which highlighted as landmarks on the Streetwise map of Kaliningrad.

The brutal transformation into Kaliningrad

The relatively peaceful and prosperous period of Königsberg ended abruptly with the start of the Second World War in 1939. Times suddenly became uncertain and unpredictable, with fear gradually building up among the citizens of Königsberg and Soviet air raids starting as early as 1941. The summer of 1944 was devastating for the city, with most of its historic quarters wiped out by the British Royal Air Force. Heavy fighting continued well into 1945, with the final assaults of the Battle of Königsberg taking place just before the Nazis surrendered. It meant that the nightmare of the citizens of Königsberg had finally ended.

Following the 1945 Potsdam Conference of the three largest powers of the anti-Hitler coalition, the northern part of East Prussia was transferred to the Soviet Union. Why was the fate of Königsberg decided this way?

Well, it followed from a negotiation between Stalin and Churchill in an attempt to divide the spheres of influence after the war. The results of what turned out to be a life-changing event for many people, had simply been written down on a small piece of scratch paper, known as the Percentages agreement. Stalin had his focus on East Prussia, as he considered it primordially Slavic land and saw the need for Soviets to seize ice-free ports in the Baltic region. With the consent of the allies, the USSR signed a border agreement with the Polish government-in-exile. And although this was a serious loss for Poland, London stood up on this issue and supported the USSR.

It so happened that Königsberg became part of the USSR, and shortly after the city was renamed to Kaliningrad – honouring the Soviet politician Mikhail Kalinin who passed away in 1946.

The first Soviet settlers already arrived in Kaliningrad a few months after the war. They started to dismantle some of the destroyed buildings in Kaliningrad, sending the extracted materials back to restore Soviet cities that had been destroyed by the war. The possibility of reconstructing German architecture was not even considered. In a country that had barely survived the war, there was no time for caring for German cultural heritage. After having disassembled the old German buildings to the ground, any remains such as basements or foundations were simply covered with soil.

By the end of the 40s, eventually, the restoration of buildings began in the city. However, it was decided to disguise almost all German traces. The facades were changed to more familiar Soviet ones, and new buildings in the Stalinist Empire style appeared on Mira Prospekt, one of the main streets in Kaliningrad. The apotheosis of the communist-era expansion was the destruction of the Königsberg Castle in the late 1960s, with the former Teutonic stronghold being viewed as the main symbol of the German past. Soon after this tragic episode in the life of the city, the construction of the House of Soviets began right on the location of the former castle. A building that would proudly demonstrate the superiority of Soviet architecture – only, it was never finished.

Known as the ‘Kaliningrad Monster’ or the ‘Kaliningrad Robot’, this building has acquired many nicknames. But everyone agrees on one thing, it is almost impossible to imagine Kaliningrad without this edifice. Under construction since the 1970s, the House of Soviets was meant to become a government office, as well as a monument to communism. After a check in the mid-80s, it turned out that the structure was not quite stable. As a result, from that time on, it has remained empty and guarded.

The building is not open to visitors – from time to time it is illegally being entered though – and doesn't serve any purpose other than just being there, for which many have suggested demolishing it. But with the ruins of the former castle nearby, this is easier said than done. In whatever deplorable state the ruins are, it is still an object of cultural heritage, and demolition of the House of Soviets could entirely mess them up.

Nevertheless, recently one interesting project has been proposed. Its initiators suggested having both eras existing side by side, through rebuilding part of the castle and renovating the House of Soviets. Only time can tell whether they succeed.

The green island in the centre of Kaliningrad has recently been named after the great thinker Immanuel Kant. In the German days the island was known as Kneiphof. By 1939, there were 304 houses, 28 streets and thousands of people living there. All that was completely wiped out after a British bombing in WW2. The only surviving resident of the island was the Königsberg Cathedral, although in a deplorable state. The old University of Albertina, located next to the church, was also destroyed. It was the leading university in the Kingdom of Prussia and one of the best in Europe. The prominent philosopher Immanuel Kant, who was born in Königsberg, was a graduate and later a teacher here. After his death, he became the last Albertina professor to be buried in the cathedral's tomb.

After clearing away the ruins left by the bombing, the nice and bushy park appeared on the island. Looking at Kant Island today, it is difficult to imagine that once there were houses on the position of each of its trees, along with cars and trams driving along the alleys.

Visit the Königsberg Cathedral

The Königsberg Cathedral is the real heart of the city, treasuring a long history. Having stood in ruins until the 1990s, the cathedral had managed to avoid the fate of final demolition. It took until 2002 for the restoration works to complete, constantly hampered by a lack of funds. An interesting detail, a helicopter of the Baltic fleet was used for hoisting the spire.

The cathedral has been restored in the so-called Baltic Gothic style, whereas its interior has gotten a new look. Nowadays church service is not offered here anymore, but you can enjoy an organ concert with incredible acoustics. The cathedral also houses the Kant Museum, which is devoted not only to the life of the philosopher but also to the fascinating history of the city. German heritage in Kaliningrad

With Soviet architecture being the one and only style for rebuilding post-war Kaliningrad, echoes of the German past are to be discovered primarily in the outskirts of Kaliningrad – parts that hadn’t suffered such a mass bombing. The special charm and appearance of the old city can still be found in most notably the areas of Maraunenhof and Amalienau. Once these were luxurious suburbs with private villas, but two world wars have left a sad mark on their appearance. Still some magnificent examples of the Jugendstil style – the German name for Art Nouveau – have been preserved.

According to the original project, these suburbs were to be built like a garden-city. Each house had its own green area, and the whole district was full of trees. Unlike typical urban development, the streets here did not intersect at right angles but meandered – a pattern that still can be seen today.

Visit the Altes House

If you love history and would like to see how ordinary people used to live in Königsberg at the beginning of the 20th century, then you should definitely visit the Altes House. It is a museum-apartment, located in a German house from 1912. All sorts of authentic exhibits will make you feel like travelling back in time.

The Fortifications of Kaliningrad

A unique system of defensive fortifications has been preserved in Kaliningrad. The former city of Königsberg historically had two defensive rings: an outer ring that consisted of 15 forts and an inner ring consisting of ramparts, ditches, defensive towers, walls and city gates. As such, the city was basically one of the largest fortresses in Europe.

A total of 15 forts previously formed a defensive ring, blocking all roads into the city. They all survived until today, but time has not been treating them particularly well. Some were given away for the needs of the armed forces, which kept them from further decline and others are overgrown with greenery. A handful of forts is still in a rather good shape, and even open to visitors. The most popular ones are Fort 5 and Fort 11, both highlighted on our Streetwise map of Kaliningrad. These forts nowadays host exhibitions and events dedicated to the Second World War. Should you decide to visit Fort 11, your ticket will include a guided tour through the stronghold.

The Königsberg gates were the only entrances into the inner city until the 20th century. Seven out of the ten gates have survived to this day. Inside some of them you will find museums nowadays, in others exhibition halls, art spaces or cafés. The most popular gates are the King's Gate and the Friedrichsburg Gate.

The King’s Gate, or Königstor in German, is one of the most beautiful gates, having the shape of a small castle. It was built in 1834 and King Frederick IV himself participated in its foundation. Its first level is decorated with three portals. On the second one, you can see three niches with statues of the first king of Prussia, Frederick I, Duke Albrecht and the founder of the city, King Ottokar II.

Today the gate houses the Historical and Cultural Center ‘Grand Embassy’, hosting an exposition that tells about the history of the city, as it developed from a small settlement to the modern-day Kaliningrad. Special attention goes to Peter the Great visiting the city, and the relations he managed to establish between East Prussia and Russia. Note that the exhibition is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and the entrance is paid.

The massive Friedrichsburg Gate was constructed in the 17th century and resembles a fortress itself. It is the only historical gate in Kaliningrad that did not lead to the city, but instead to the fortress of Friedrichsburg.

Today you can find a branch of the World Ocean Museum inside this gate, with an exhibition devoted to traditional vessels from different parts of Russia. Another highlight of the museum is the adjacent Lodejny Shipyard, a place where historical light vessels are being restored or completely recreated. Please note that the exhibition is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and the entrance is paid.

The amber treasures of the Kaliningrad region

The Baltic region has long been associated with amber. This natural stone has inspired the craftsmen of Königsberg to create precious jewellery and interior items since the time of the Teutonic Knights! What is this amber?

Amber is the hardened resin of prehistoric conifers. Deposits of ancient resin exist in different parts of the world, but around 90% of it is concentrated on the Baltic coast. For centuries these stones have been collected on the seashore after heavy storms. Starting from the 20th century, it has been extracted from the ground with the help of machines. Despite the active mining, the Kaliningrad amber, according to experts, will last for at least another 100 years.

Visitors of Kaliningrad have the unique opportunity to learn everything about this precious stone. In the Amber Museum, you will find not only fascinating information about this stone, but you will also be able to see amber in all its glory, as the museum presents samples in about every color you can imagine.

The Amber Museum was opened in 1979 in the Dohna tower, which is located on the shores of Upper Pond. The tower was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1853, as one of the defensive structures of Königsberg. It is named after the Prussian military engineer Friedrich Emil Graf zu Dohna-Schlobitten, who took part in the liberation war against Napoleon in the early 19th century.

The exposition of the museum is divided into two parts and occupies three floors. The first part is represented by amber samples of different weights, colour scales and transparency. It is here where you will find the largest piece of Russian amber, weighing nothing less than 4.3 kilograms! The most interesting part of the museum is made up of amber samples with pieces of animals and plants trapped tens of millions of years ago in the once liquid and viscous resin. The cultural and historical part of the collection contains amber jewellery and household items found in the Kaliningrad region during excavations.

In the Amber Museum, you can also see the original amber samples that served as the basis for the reconstruction of the famous Amber Room of the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg. These fragments are considered some of the most magnificent pieces of art made of this stone. By the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg in 2003, the Amber Room was entirely recreated in its original shape. It took eventually 6 tons of Kaliningrad amber and 23 years of painstaking work to recreate this masterpiece.

Where to buy amber in Kaliningrad?

You will find a large number of shops in the city selling amber. We can recommend two small stores near the Fish Village, on the banks of the Pregolya River. These are specialized stores from the manufacturer Russian Amber. Here you can buy not only jewellery but also decor items, paintings and much more. Explore the mysteries of the sea in the World Ocean Museum

The sea and trade have always played a huge role in the life of the city. From 1339 it was a member of a legendary trade union of Baltic cities, the Hanseatic League. The port of Königsberg was of great importance because, unlike many other waterways in northern Europe, the Baltic Sea does not freeze in winter.

Centuries later, after the Second World War, this factor again played an important role. The ‘not freezing’ advantage was viewed as strategically important by the USSR, making the port of Kaliningrad one of the best locations to harbor its western fleet.

Today you will find the popular World Ocean Museum on the territory of the old port. The embankment where it is located is designed in the style of the old Baltic port, with nice little brick houses and antique-styled lamps that make it pleasant to walk here.

The World Ocean Museum catches the attention with some beautiful ships moored on its quay. Among them is the vessel Vityaz, on which the Mariana Trench was studied. Located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Trench is about 11 thousand meters deep and is considered the deepest place in the oceans of the world. Another eyecatcher is the research vessel Cosmonaut Viktor Patsaev, which was used to control and manage satellites and interplanetary station flights by communicating with cosmonauts and processing data. Another remarkable sight is the submarine B-413, dating from the pre-nuclear period. All these ships are part of the World Ocean Museum and can be visited.

The exposition of the World Ocean Museum tells its visitors about marine culture, challenging discoveries, the incredible nature of the ocean, its fascinating inhabitants and complex environment. It is a very interactive museum with exhibits that are interesting for both children and adults. You will discover for example how sonar works or listen to the sounds made by deep-sea animals.

Exploring the Fish Village of Kaliningrad

Another pleasant place in the centre of Kaliningrad that you should definitely visit is the Fish Village. This little area on the banks of the Pregolya River was created in 2006, in the style of the old Königsberg. Walking along the embankment today, you can imagine how everything looked here before. This very place once used to be a fish market with the fishermen of Königsberg trying to sell their fresh catch. Today you will primarily find cafés, restaurants and hotels here, as well as souvenir and jewellery shops.

What to eat in Kaliningrad?

Not surprisingly, you will find a good number of restaurants offering seafood in the Fish Village. The proximity to the sea makes it possible to eat a wide variety of fish, as well as delicious eels. For meat, we advise you to try the nearby Kaiser Wurst restaurant – get directions – as its menu is replete with Königsberg treats. But actually, what is Königsberg cuisine?

Such an unusual history as in this city could not but positively affect the culinary traditions. Among the most popular old recipes are the Königsberg Klopse and the Königsberg Fleck. The Königsberg Klopse is a German meat dish similar to meatballs in a creamy caper sauce. It is not fried, stewed or baked, but boiled in broth, and then brought to readiness in the already mentioned sauce. The Königsberg Fleck first gained fame in the 16th century. It is an East Prussian stew of beef tripe, richly flavoured with spices.

Visit Svetlogorsk

Kaliningrad is surrounded by many little towns, some with a profound German touch. One of the towns deserving special attention is Svetlogorsk, located on the shores of the Baltic sea. This small town with neat houses and green streets offers its guests peace and magically clean air.

Like Kaliningrad itself, Svetlogorsk was once German, and known as Rauschen. About 200 years ago, it became a popular and demanded resort – which actually is still the case. For this, it was nicknamed the "Pearl of the Baltic". Apart from a pleasant and relaxing stay, you can be a bit of a treasure hunter here. The fact is that you might be able to find amber on the beach, with the best odds after a strong storm.

The most convenient way to get to Svetlogorsk is by train, which departs from the Kaliningrad-Yuzhny railway station. The journey takes only about an hour.

How to find amber?

There are some simple rules to follow, that might allow you to take a small souvenir from the Baltic Sea coast. First of all, it is best to search for amber after a storm, or when the sea is rough – but be careful of strong current! You could extract amber from the bottom of the sea, but most often the precious stone travels on the edges of waves to fall down on the beach close to the sea – just like where you would expect to find traces of algae carried out by the sea. Lastly, be sure to look very carefully, as amber on the shore is usually not larger than the size of a bean.

How to visit Kaliningrad?

Given the isolation from the main territory of Russia, visiting Kaliningrad may not seem an easy task. In reality, it is not that hard, as you just need to make sure that you have a valid visa for entering Russia. Kaliningrad is actually one of the few regions in Russia that you can visit with an electronic visa. An e-visa is easy to get, but implies that you can only stay in the Kaliningrad region during your stay in the Russian Federation.

The electronic visa to Russia was introduced just in 2017. At the moment it operates in Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg and Vladivostok. It is free of charge and can be obtained by filling out the form on the official website . The processing time is no more than 4 days. It is worth noting though, that such visas are valid only in the specified region of Russia and involve only one entry for a period of 8 days.

In case you would like to see other places in Russia as well, it is better to apply for the standard Russian tourist visa. One important thing to note is that tourist visas are often single-entry. This means that you would have to make sure that you're staying inside the Russian Federation while travelling from Kaliningrad to other parts of Russia – so a short visit to another European city in between, is not a good idea.

Kaliningrad has only one airport, Khrabrovo. After arrival, you can get to the city either by bus 244e, which takes about 45 minutes for a price of around 100 Rubles, or by taxi, which usually takes about 30 minutes for a price around 800 Rubles.

Kaliningrad: Impregnable Fortress or “Russian Alamo”?

The Baltic Sea port city of Kaliningrad, the seat of a sovereign exclave of the Russian Federation between Lithuania and Poland, in the Russian oblast (administrative region) bearing its name, has been a fortress since its founding as Konigsberg in 1255. The Soviet Union’s Red Army captured it from the Germans in April 1945 in one of the last combat operations in East Prussia. After the war, Konigsberg was renamed Kaliningrad in honor of the head of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Kalinin. As part of the August 1945 Potsdam Agreement, the city retained its fortress-like character as the leading edge of the USSR’s Baltic Military District and forward base of the Soviet Union’s Baltic Fleet from 1952 onward. The Soviet frigate Storozhevoy that mutinied and made a failed attempt to escape to Sweden in November 1975, and the Soviet S-363 submarine that famously grounded off the Swedish naval port of Karlskrona in 1981 in the “Whiskey on the Rocks” incident were both in the Baltic Fleet.

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 left Kaliningrad as a Russian island in what increasingly became a NATO sea of new alliance members that included Poland and Lithuania, and a Baltic Sea that went from being a Cold War contested body of water to a NATO lake in just a decade. As a result of initial NATO encroachment in the 1990s and accelerating under the rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kaliningrad has regained its status as a fortress on the Baltic Sea, now armed with cruise missiles, surface-to-air-missile (SAM) batteries, the future submarines of the Baltic Fleet, and nuclear weapons. What then is Kaliningrad? A great Russian anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) fortress threatening safe transit of the Baltic Sea and the vulnerable Baltic States, or a lone outpost surrounded by adversaries—as was the Alamo in 1836, before the Texas revolutionaries within it were overrun?

  Kaliningrad’s Modern Ramparts

From the 1990s through early 2016, Kaliningrad’s military forces were relatively weak but got a significant boost by 2021 with heavy and diverse armaments—missiles, warships, armored vehicles, and troops. The latter consisted of the 11th Army Corps, whose composite ground force units had a nominal strength of 12,000 to 18,000 troops , including T-72 tanks, BTK armored personnel carriers, mobile rocket launchers, and artillery. In addition, the heavily mechanized 336th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade resided in the Kaliningrad oblast, equipped with BTR armored personnel carriers, with at least one battalion capable of air assault. The aircraft in the oblast included four squadrons equipped with a mix of Su-30SM, Su-24, and Su-27 aircraft that were supported by a robust air and missile defense, including four battalions of the S-400 SAM system.

In 2022, the Baltic Fleet contained 52 surface warships, including four of the new, cruise missile-armed Steregushchiy-class corvettes, one Kilo-class submarine, and numerous support vessels. Two of the fleet’s Buyan-class corvettes mount the Kaliber land-attack cruise missile.

The land-based missile arming of Kaliningrad was extensive and included dozens of nuclear-capable Iskander (SS-26) ballistic missiles (with a range of over 300 miles ) and the antiship Bastion-P missile system, featuring Oniks P-800 missiles (with a range of 75–210 nautical miles). A map from a 2021 Center for Naval Analyses (CNA) report on the force posture of Russia’s Western Military District shows the depth of Russia’s militarization of the oblast.

Ukraine War Losses Don’t Affect the Baltics

As with other elements of the Russian armed forces, the Russia-Ukraine war has taken a toll on forces originally based in Kaliningrad, as Russia has mobilized units from other regions to offset losses sustained in its invasion. Some US sources have reported that the 11th Army Corps was moved to Ukraine in spring 2022 and suffered heavy losses in combat near the city of Kharkiv in August and September. One battalion of the 336th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade has been reported as deployed to Ukraine as well.

Despite the loss of these ground forces, the air, naval, and missile armament of Kaliningrad remains mostly intact. In February 2023, Dutch F-35s intercepted Russian combat aircraft from Kaliningrad near Poland and escorted them out of Polish air space. In April 2023, German and UK Typhoon fighters intercepted Russian combat aircraft over the Baltic s . Russia’s Baltic Fleet also remains active with exercises late last year . Russia’s 2022 Maritime Doctrine suggests that the Russia will continue to press the boundaries of gray-zone warfare, which would certainly include the Baltic region. The Russian submarine force, arguably the most well-resourced and competent arm of the Russian Navy, remains unaffected by the Russia-Ukraine war, and while the Baltic Fleet now possesses one operational Kilo-class submarine, it could ultimately field upwards of six Lada-class advanced subs if their construction continues.

Kaliningrad in the Context of a Larger NATO in the Baltics

While its land-based component may be reduced significantly in numbers , Kaliningrad retains formidable armaments with which to threaten NATO resupply of the Baltic States—and now Finland—as alliance members. Until it develops a larger submarine force, much of the Russian threat resides within air and missile components of Kaliningrad’s armament. Research on that threat, in particular from the Yet Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI) suggests that Russian ground-based radars and aircraft are essential to Russian surface-to-surface-missile command of the eastern Baltic region. Destruction of any of those parts of the Russian Federation’s Baltic reconnaissance strike complex could seriously reduce the range and effectiveness of Russian missile forces.

Despite this vulnerability to Russian missiles, NATO members Poland and Lithuania—whose territories separate Kaliningrad from Russian ally Belarus only by the 100-kilometer “Suwalki Gap”—remain vigilant against potential Russian aggression. Lithuania still refers to the Kaliningrad oblast as the “biggest threat in the region,” and Poland remains concerned about Russian artillery and missile attacks emanating from the Kaliningrad oblast against NATO nations. Poland recently moved a US-made HIMARS rocket battery near the Kaliningrad border, demonstrating continued concern for potential Russian aggression. Poland also continues to upgrade its ground forces with new mechanized units that could threaten Kaliningrad in return. NATO has long believed that Kaliningrad has been a deployment location for Russian nuclear weapons . Their continued presence further aggravates the security situation in the Baltic region.

Lynchpin or Liability?

Kaliningrad will remain of value to Russia as it is the only year-round, ice-free port of the Baltic Fleet. The weakened Russian ground-force presence in the oblast adds a degree of risk to any Russian operation in the region and reduces the local ground-based threat to Poland and Lithuania. While Russian troops might not threaten the "Suwalki Gap,” Russian aircraft, missiles, and warships based in the Kaliningrad oblast could still obstruct NATO resupply efforts. Kaliningrad, however well-armed, is still surrounded by NATO territory much as West Berlin was encircled by Soviet forces during the Cold War. Yet the specter of Russia’s use of nuclear weapons in defense of Kaliningrad may impede any major Western efforts against Russia’s Kaliningrad oblast. No doubt, NATO will continue to watch Kaliningrad and devise methods to limit its impact on the wider Baltic region.

How tall are you?

To measure your height, stand straight up, barefoot, with your back, heels, shoulders and head all touching a wall. While looking straight ahead, place a book or straight edge on your head and slowly push it against the wall. Your straight edge should be parallel with the floor. Mark the spot where the bottom of the book is touching the wall. The distance from the marked spot to the floor is your height.

What is your inseam?

How to measure: Stand barefoot with your back straight and against a wall. Tuck a ruler or something that extends to the floor between your legs. Using both hands, and keeping it level, pull the ruler up into your crotch as if you were sitting on the saddle. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ruler to the ground to find your inseam measurement. Your inseam is very important to your final bike size so please measure carefully.

The tires will fit on the rim acceptably.. don't know what your rim size is off hand but I guarantee it's a wider internal width than other rims I've used the same size rubber on.
