Heritage Tourism in Maharastra

Different dynasties and rulers have swept through Maharashtra through the ages, bringing with them the different form of the traditional, art, social practices and architectures. The state features over 350 forts – the largest number in any state in India. The celebrated heritage sites of Maharashtra are the testimony of how grand and glorious were these dynasties. All these great architectures, in the form of forts, palaces, and even caves, commemorate the grand events and episodes that took place in the history. And are significant from their historical, cultural and archeological standpoint. The architectural work that has been done in these places is patronized by some of the finest artisans and designers, invited from the different parts of the world.

Going by the records of Maharashtra tourism, here one can see monuments that are as old as 4th century BC; the perfect example of the same is the Ajanta and Ellora caves near Aurangabad. The finest form of sculptures, designs, carving and statues in these caves describe the reveal the centuries old religious and artistic tradition present in the state. Soon after the Rashtrakuta dynasty, who were the makers of the Ellora Caves, Seuna (Yadava) dynasty rose to power in Maharashtra and left their mark in the form of Daulatabad Fort, which is 15 km from Aurangabad. In the 14th century, many Islamic rulers governed the state, and that's when Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb built the replica of Taj Mahal, Bibi Ka Maqbara in Aurangabad. During this reign, Maharashtra architecture saw a new aesthetic and a concept of Islamic architecture was introduced. The historical places of Maharashtra started capturing eyeballs in early 17th century when Marathas came into power.

Their stronghold in the region such as Pune, Panhala and Mahad led to the creation of grand fort complexes and cities. During the reign of Marathas, heritage travel places like Shaniwar Wada (Pune), Lal Mahal (Pune), Ahmednagar Fort (Satara District, Raigad Fort (Mahad) and Sindhudurg Fort (Sindhudurg District ) were built.

Later, with the arrival of colonial rulers in the 18th century, new architectural features and techniques were used again. During the colonial rule in India, when Mumbai was Bombay, Britons made many architectural masterpieces like Gateway of India, Rajabai Clock Tower and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portuguese too has left their mark in Maharashtra in the form of the Vasai Fort, which was initially built a ship building site. The pulse of Portuguese and their lifestyle still echoes in the Vasai fort. When European settlers came to Maharashtra, they made their impression on almost everything except one place, precisely a fort, called Murud Janjira. One of the strongest fort ever made in India, it remained unconquered until it became part of Indian territory after Independence.

When it comes to the best architecture sites in India, Maharashtra’s contribution is immense. On a heritage tour to Maharashtra, don't forget to visit the heritage sites, which were once the thriving towns and capitals.

Kolaba Fort

Encircled by the clear blue waters of the Arabian sea and offering some of the most gorgeous views around, Kolaba fort is a historical building located in Alibaug. The fort is nearly 300 years old and it once acted as one of the major naval stations during the time when Shivaji Maharaj ruled in Maharashtra. The spectacular fort was once an isolated military fortification in the middle of the Arabian Sea, and had a strategic geographical importance for the Marathas when it came to warfare.

The fort is located just two kilometres from the Alibaug Beach, and if there is a low tide you can easily reach this place by walking here.  However if there is a high tide you will have to hire a boat to visit the fort. The fort itself is full of historical artifacts and various paraphernalia of its golden period. You will find huge cannons and sculptures of various birds and animals on the walls of the fort. You can also find various old temple buildings here. In fact, there is a Lord Ganesh temple that is present within the grounds and is still used as a place of worship by the local fishermen community. The fort is surrounded by the sea waters on all its sides, and a significant hallmark worth noting is the presence of a freshwater well within the fort.

The fort held an important geographical advantage for the Marathas and was used as a Chief Naval Station for planning strategic attacks on the British army. Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction and one of the most important destinations in the town. Actually, four of five places you mentioned are on my wishlist should I get the chance to return to India one day. I'm always intrigued by how those ancient temples were made, how people worshiped there, and how they were abandoned. Plus, the exquisite stone carvings and paintings are truly sights to behold!

Thanks fantastic Bama! If you come again this side, do hit me up - we can catch up for coffee or maybe I can even join you for a trip 🙂

I had no idea tghat Maharashtra had so many UNESCO world heritage sites! Am keen to go. Love your photographs of the historical sites but also that wonderful flower-filled plateau!

These are all fascinating! So many treasures in one place, I wouldn't know where to start. Or maybe I would just start with Ellora Caves because that was the name of a book publisher I knew of? Still, gorgeous and unique sites to explore.

I would love to see all of them but most especially that flower field. THat would be my cup of tea.

The flower field is certainly stunning and very unique too...

Do you think it would be allowed and respectful to do our follow me Away photoshoot here? Just amazing!!

Taking pictures is allowed at all (CST is a bit tough though), but if it looks like you are doing an elaborate shoot with lights and tripod, it won't be allowed. Such shoots require approval from ASI first. Without a tripod you can easily do it though...

Oh my god this is so beautiful! So bookmarking this. (Kaliasa Temple at Ellora) It's totally indiana jones style and we love these kind of places! What a list!

First time I have seen this! Really want to to explore Kailasa Temple at Ellora and those flowers are beautiful -- adding to my list

Holy cow! The Buddhist Caves at Ajanta is definitely going on my list! I've never seen something so beautiful! I love it!

India has such a huge amount of UNESCO sites. I'm a big fan of visiting them and checking them off my bucket list. I would like to see the one at Maharashtra best. Nice list.

I had no idea there were so many UNESCO sites concentrated in Maharashtra. It would be amazing to see the well-preserved paintings at Ajanta Caves.

For me, India is a country that has it all! It's amazing how an entire western ghats is a UNESCO World Heritage. The Kaas Plateau is really beautiful!!!

UNESCO World Heritage sites in Maharashtra

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the Maharashtra Discovery blog, where we take you on a fascinating journey through the amazing culture and nature of Maharashtra. Today, we will explore the special places in Maharashtra that have been recognized by UNESCO as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These UNESCO World Heritage sites in Maharashtra have a rich history and stunning natural beauty. As someone who loves to explore, I have personally visited some of these remarkable places like Ellora Caves, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and the Western Ghats. In this blog, I’ll share my own experiences at these fantastic destinations and give you a sneak peek of what’s to come when I explore Elephanta and Ajanta Caves in the future.

UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations established in 1945 with the mission to promote international collaboration in education, science, culture, and communication. UNESCO aims to protect and preserve the world’s cultural and natural heritage, foster global education initiatives, promote freedom of expression, and advance scientific research for the collective benefit of humanity. Ellora Caves

Ellora

Ellora Caves, located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra, are a group of 34 ancient monasteries and temples carved into a high basalt cliff. These magnificent caves span over 2 km and date back to AD 600 to 1000. The Ellora complex showcases the civilization of ancient India, where followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism worked together, showing a spirit of coexistence and religious tolerance.

The caves were carved in three phases. The first phase (caves 1-12) reflects the Mahayana Buddhism philosophy, while the second phase (caves 13-29) includes the famous Kailasa Temple and represents Hinduism. The last phase (caves 30-34) is dedicated to Jainism. Each group of caves showcases intricate sculptures and paintings, offering a glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of that time.

Among the Buddhist caves, Cave 10, Cave 11, and Cave 12 hold particular significance as they depict Vajrayana Buddhism and feature various Buddhist deities. The Hindu caves, especially Cave 16 (Kailasa Temple), display remarkable rock-cut architecture with elaborate sculptures and paintings. Cave 16 is an excellent example of human creativity and innovation.

The Jaina caves (caves 30-34) are delicately carved, with exquisite sculptures and paintings dedicated to the Digambara sect. Together, the Ellora Caves provide a window into ancient India’s socio-cultural phenomena, material culture, politics, and lifestyles.

The caves were added to UNESCO world heritage site list for several reasons. Firstly, they are a unique artistic achievement, displaying an outstanding level of creativity and skill. Secondly, the caves offer a glimpse into the ancient Indian civilization, with monuments dating back to over a thousand years. Lastly, the three religions coexisted and established their sanctuaries in one place, emphasizing their universal value.

To protect and maintain the site’s integrity, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) manages the Ellora Caves, along with the Forest Department and the Government of Maharashtra, overseeing the buffer zones. Various laws and acts govern the administration of the property and its surroundings. However, some potential threats, such as visitor and environmental management, seepage, and cracking in the caves, require attention.

To sustain the Outstanding Universal Value of the Ellora Caves, a comprehensive conservation management plan is being implemented. This plan includes monitoring the condition of the caves, addressing visitor and environmental management issues, and building the capacity of conservation staff to protect the property’s attributes, integrity, and authenticity for future generations.

Ajintha Caves

Ajintha

The Ajanta Caves, an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds a remarkable historical and artistic significance. These ancient caves are situated on a vertical cliff above the river Waghora in the hills of Ajanta. There are thirty caves in total, including the unfinished ones, out of which five are chaityagrihas or sanctuaries, and the rest are sangharamas or monasteries.

The caves were carved in two different phases, separated by about four centuries. The first phase was during the rule of the Satavahana dynasty, from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century BCE. These caves, numbering six, were created by Hinayana or Theravadin followers of Buddhism, and they worshiped Buddha in a symbolic form. The chaityagrihas have vaulted ceilings and a horseshoe-shaped window known as chaitya window. The monasteries consist of an astylar hall for congregation and dwelling apartments for monks.

In the second phase, during the 5th to 6th centuries CE, the caves were dominated by Mahayana followers of Buddhism, and they worshiped Buddha in an idol form. The earlier caves were reused, and new ones were excavated, showcasing renewed architectural and sculptural fervor. The walls were adorned with exquisite mural paintings, executed in tempera technique, and the pillars, door jambs, and facades were richly decorated with sculptures.

Ajanta Caves is an outstanding example of ancient Buddhist rock-cut architecture. It is a unique and influential artistic achievement, with its style even extending to places like Java. The caves provide exceptional testimony to the evolution of Indian art and the role of Buddhism during the Satavahana and Vakataka dynasties.

The site is well protected and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), along with other stakeholders. The property’s integrity is preserved, and efforts are made to address potential threats and ensure its authenticity. Measures are being taken to control visitor pressure, monitor cave structures, and build staff capacity for conservation and management.

The Ajanta Caves stand as a testament to the artistic and spiritual richness of ancient India, drawing visitors from around the world to witness its magnificence and understand the historical and religious significance it holds.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

CST Station

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, earlier known as Victoria Terminus, is an incredible building in Mumbai, India. It was designed by F. W. Stevens and took 10 years to build, starting in 1878. This beautiful railway station is spread over a large area and serves more than three million commuters every day.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is an extraordinary railway station, displaying a fusion of British, Italian, and Indian architectural styles. It showcases intricate 3D stone carvings of animals, flora, and fauna, along with impressive arches and beautiful rose windows. The building is made of various materials like yellow malad stones, Italian marble, polished granite, and white limestone, adding to its splendor.

The station’s architecture is a perfect example of Victorian Gothic Revival, which was a popular style in England during that time. It also incorporates elements of Indian traditional architecture, making it a unique blend of two cultures. The splendid stone dome, turrets, pointed arches, and unusual ground plan have similarities with Indian palace architecture.

The station is a historic symbol of Mumbai as a major port city and a significant commercial hub during the British colonial era. It reflects the economic prosperity of city at that time.

Although there have been some changes inside and outside the station, the core structure remains intact. Efforts are made to preserve and restore the building to its original glory. It has been declared a “Heritage Grade-I” structure by the Maharashtra State Government and is protected under heritage legislation.

The administration and maintenance of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus lie with the Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division of Central Railway. There are ongoing efforts to decongest the station and improve the surrounding areas.

A long-term management plan was initiated in 1997 by Indian Railways through the Architectural Conservation Cell (ACC). The plan includes restoration work, traffic management, tourism, and personnel training. The funds for the station’s upkeep are provided by the Indian Government, and Indian Railways have a system to allocate funds for conservation work.

Overall, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a remarkable architectural marvel that preserves the fusion of cultures and stands as a symbol of Mumbai’s historical and cultural heritage. Efforts to protect and manage this iconic station ensure its legacy lives on for future generations to appreciate and admire.

The Western Ghats

Western Ghat

The Western Ghats, also known as the  Sahyadri mountain range, older than the Himalayas, are a chain of mountains running along India’s western coast. They are very special because of their unique influence on the weather and climate in the region. The Ghats play a significant role in the Indian monsoon system, making the tropical climate of the area more moderate. This makes the Western Ghats a great example of the monsoon system worldwide.

Apart from their climatic importance, the Western Ghats are also a treasure trove of biodiversity. They are home to a vast variety of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. This makes them one of the eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biodiversity in the world. Within the Ghats, you can find beautiful forests with many unique plant species, some of which are under threat of extinction. There are also several animals, like amphibians, reptiles, and fishes, which are globally threatened. The Ghats are truly a haven for nature lovers and a crucial place for protecting endangered species.

The Western Ghats have a long history that goes back to the ancient times. They are evidence of the earth’s geological changes, such as the breakup of the ancient landmass and the formation of India as an isolated land. Due to these changes and the favorable weather patterns, many new species of plants and animals evolved in the Ghats. This makes the Western Ghats a vital place for understanding the movement and evolution of species over time.

The Western Ghats are so vast and diverse that they cannot be represented by just one protected area. Instead, they are divided into 39 smaller parts, grouped into 7 sub-clusters. Each part is unique and tells its own story of the Ghats’ richness. The protection and management of these parts are done through strict laws and regulations, ensuring that they remain safe and preserved for the future. The involvement of local communities in managing these areas is also essential, and their livelihood concerns are taken into account.

Overall, the Western Ghats are of immense global importance for their biodiversity, geological significance, and influence on weather patterns. Preserving and managing these mountains is crucial for the conservation of unique species and the well-being of the people and ecosystems they support.

Elephanta Caves:

elephanta

The Elephanta Caves, also known as the ‘City of Caves,’ are located on Elephanta Island near Mumbai, in Western India. These ancient caves hold a mesmerizing collection of rock art connected to the worship of Lord Shiva. Dating back to around the 5th to 6th centuries AD, these remarkable caves showcase some of the finest examples of Indian art and architecture.

The main attraction, Cave 1, houses a magnificent 7-meter-high sculpture of “Sadashiva,” representing Shiva as the Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer. Other impressive sculptures include Nataraja, Yogishvara, Ardhanarishwara, and more, each displaying unique forms and stories. The layout and design of the caves, with their sanctum and grand pillars, show significant advancements in rock-cut architecture.

Elephanta Caves have earned their place on UNESCO World Heritage site List for several reasons. Firstly, the fifteen large sculptures surrounding the Shiv linga in the main cave are considered one of the greatest examples of Indian art, specifically devoted to the cult of Lord Shiva. Secondly, these caves are a pinnacle of rock-architecture in western India, showcasing colossal sculptures and artistic creations of unparalleled beauty.

Preserving the integrity of the Elephanta Caves remains crucial. Efforts are needed to protect the archaeological components in their natural settings, address saline activity and deterioration of the rock surfaces, and safeguard the site from nearby industrial development. The Archaeological Survey of India takes primary responsibility for managing and protecting the caves, supported by other departments under various legislations.

To sustain the outstanding universal value of the Elephanta Caves, a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan is essential. This plan will guide restoration and conservation efforts, address structural issues in the caves, and ensure scientific standards are followed. Additional resources, technical expertise, and funding are required to conserve this extraordinary site and protect its rich archaeological heritage for generations to come.

As I finish talking about the special places in Maharashtra recognized by UNESCO, I am reminded of how much history, culture, and nature this state has. These sites show how Maharashtra has a rich and beautiful heritage. I am excited about my upcoming trips to Elephanta and Ajanta Caves, where I hope to find exciting things. Maharashtra is like a precious gem in India because it has so many different wonders. I invite all of you to explore and enjoy the beauty of this state. Until we meet again, happy exploring!

15 Historic Places In Mumbai To Take You Through Time

15 Historic Places In Mumbai To Take You Through Time

Mumbai has a rich ancient history, and the journey from Bombay to Mumbai is iconic! Whenever I am around the Fort area, I never fail to look at all the statues that have been sitting there for years, they all have a story to tell. The stories of how Bombay has transitioned, the stories of our freedom fighters, the stories of our ancestors. I don’t think we need movies or any TV Show to tell us how Mumbai has changed. A stroll through the streets of Mumbai will give you the raw picture. This city holds many tales be it the pouring rains, the dreadful terrorist attacks, the fight to win back Mumbai and the list goes on! The old historic monuments are the pride of the city and we are here to pay a tribute to these majestic places.

Here is a list of must-visit historic places in Mumbai!

1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was originally named as Victoria Terminus under the rule of Queen Victoria. Now, I also recently got to know that CSMT Railway station was originally build to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, it had been 15 years of her rule, and to mark that occasion this majestic site was built in the year 1887. In the year 1996, the name was changed to (CST) Chhatrapati Maharaj Terminus to honour Shivaji! CSMT is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, aren’t we all proud mama bears now? It is now one of the prime railway stations that connect the city to every possible corner.

After it was built completely, Gateway was used as a landing site by the Emperors who traveled by seaways to Mumbai. Today, it is one of the prominent places to visit in Mumbai and also the most crowded tourist attraction. It is one of the loved historic places in Mumbai.

Spiritual Tourism in India Gives Boost to These 7 Emerging Cities

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

June 24th, 2024 at 7:47 AM EDT

Hotel companies are betting big on the smaller towns in India. With spiritual tourism accounting for 60% of the domestic tourism, the segment is likely to drive the growth in the Indian hospitality industry for the next few years.

Bulbul Dhawan

Spiritual tourism will help develop more tourism-related infrastructure in emerging cities in India, according to a report by real estate services firm Colliers.

In its latest report, Colliers identified 7 emerging cities, all religious hubs, where hospitality is set to drive real estate growth: Amritsar in Punjab; Ayodhya and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh; Dwarka in Gujarat; Puri in Odisha; Shirdi in Maharashtra; and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

The report highlighted that spiritual tourism is set to be a major growth driver for the development of several temple towns in India, thanks to government policy support and infrastructure developments.

The improvements in infrastructure, such as upgraded roads, flagship trains, and new airports, are expected to attract real estate investors to these spiritual destinations.

Smaller towns are emerging as dynamic contributors to India’s economy, driven by improved infrastructure, affordable real estate, skilled talent, and government initiatives, said Colliers India CEO Badal Yagnik. “Significant momentum is expected across residential, commercial, retail, hospitality, and industrial segments,” he said.

How Religious Travel Powers India’s Tourism

In the 2022-2023 financial year, the travel and tourism industry contributed about $199 billion to India’s GDP. The Colliers report revealed that spiritual tourism holds a 30% market share in the country’s travel and tourism sector and accounts for 60% of the domestic tourism market.

Data from India’s Ministry of Tourism showed that in 2022, over 1.4 billion tourists visited religious sites across the country. These places of religious tourism generated INR 1,340 billion (over $16 billion) during the year.

Destinations like Ayodhya and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh have seen significant upgrades to better accommodate tourists. In a recent interview with Skift , Preeti Srivastava, the tourism deputy director in Uttar Pradesh, mentioned that the state’s tourism industry has been transformed following the inauguration of the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor for visitor management in Varanasi in December 2021.

Spiritual Tourism and Hospitality Development

Spiritual destinations in India have been witnessing significant investment by hotel companies. Some of these cities include:

  • Ayodhya is looking at an annual footfall of 23 million, and a report by brokerage firm Jeffries estimates that it could attract over 50 million tourists annually. Due to its recent development, the land value appreciation in 2024 as compared to 2019 is expected to be over 100%. However, it has a low hospitality sector presence currently, as most projects are under development.
  • In January, Radisson Hotel Group opened Park Inn by Radisson in Ayodhya, with another project under development. Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) also signed two hotels in the city under the Ginger and Vivanta brands last year, while a third one under the IHCL SeleQtions brand was signed this year. Lemon Tree Hotels is planning a 200-key hotel in Ayodhya, while a hotel under Wyndham’s Ramada Encore brand has been signed.
  • According to the Colliers report, Amritsar has been witnessing an annual footfall of 30 million. This has resulted in the city having a high presence of branded hotels in the city.
  • Last year, Marriott opened a Le Meridien hotel in Amritsar, while in December.
  • IHG Hotels announced the signing of a new voco hotel in the city.
  • Home to the holiest temple in Sikh faith — Golden Temple — the city also marked the entry of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham brand in India earlier this year.
  • Accor is also set to open a Grand Mercure-branded property in the city.
  • Varanasi, post its upgrade, has had a significant increase in tourists. According to Srivastava, after the inauguration of the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor, a total of more than 130 million tourists visited the pilgrim city in 2022 and 2023.
  • Last month, IHCL signed its fourth hotel in city under its budget brand Ginger.
  • Wyndham Hotels opened a Ramada Plaza in the city last year,
  • Hilton Opened DoubleTree by Hilton in Varanasi in September 2023.

Government Boost to Spiritual Tourism

The report said that the focus by the government on spiritual tourism is boosting this segment. “Given the latent potential, the segment’s market size grew from $44 billion in 2020 to about $60 billion in 2023,” it said, adding that the segment is expected to grow 9-10% annually to reach $130 billion by 2032.

Recent government schemes including Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (Prashad) and Swadesh Darshan 2.0 – to develop sustainable destinations – has led to an increase in tourist-friendly pilgrimage destinations.

“Various government initiatives in recent years have also uplifted the infrastructure and real estate market of select spiritually inclined tourist destinations,” the report said.

The government has replicated the upgradation of Varanasi in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh for the Mahakaleshwar Temple, and is now looking to uplift Mathura . This has led to a more systematic tourist flow in these destinations, creating the potential for better tourist management. Madhya Pradesh tourism is considering implementing a tourist registration system to tackle overcrowding and overtourism.

There has also been a boost in aviation sector for spiritual tourism destinations as the number of airports have doubled over the past 10 years. Airports have come up in smaller cities such as Shirdi in Maharashtra and Kushinagar in Bihar for devotees.

Maharashtra's Mahayuti Govt Presents Staggering Rs 612,293 Crore Budget, More Than Pak And Bangladesh's for 2024-25

M aharashtra’s Mahayuti government on Friday presented an eye-popping Rs 612,293 crore (around $73 billion) budget, which is more than Pakistan’s $67.84 billion and Bangladesh’s $68 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25. Deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar, who also holds the finance portfolio in the state, presented the interim budget in the assembly’s ongoing monsoon session. This is the last legislative session before the state assembly polls, which will be in the next four months.

The ruling alliance of Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena, and NCP, which faced unflattering results in the recent Lok Sabha elections, went all out to appease key sections of the state’s population through budgetary allocations. Pawar, for instance, announced the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme for women as well as a bonus, crop insurance, and electricity bill waivers for farmers. He also slashed the tax on petrol and diesel in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai from 24% to 21%.

Based on neighbouring BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh’s popular Ladli Behna Yojana, under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, eligible women in the age group of 21 to 60 will get an allowance of Rs 1,500 per month from the state government. The interim budget allocated Rs 46,000 crore per year for the plan.

The state government has also made it mandatory for those born after May 2024 to add their mothers’ names to all official government documents in a bid to empower women.

Also, under the Pink E-Rickshaw scheme, 10,000 women from 17 cities will be financed to buy these vehicles. For this, the government has made a provision of Rs 80 crore.

It has also increased the subsidy from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 for the Shubhamangal Samuhik Nondanikrut Vivah scheme (mass marriages) for women.

The government has also provided big relief, particularly to women of the state by providing three free gas cylinders to eligible households under the Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana. A total of 52,16,412 families are expected to benefit from this.

Ajit Pawar also announced that girls from backward and economically weaker classes will get 100% reimbursement of education and examination fees up to Rs 8 lakh. The government feels that this decision will benefit 2,05,499 girls with a provision of about Rs 2,000 crore.

Farmers in focus

The Mahayuti suffered setbacks in rural Maharashtra during the Lok Sabha polls. With a large section of farmers not being happy with the state government’s policies, many top leaders of the ruling alliance faced defeat. Keeping that in mind, the state government has made significant allocations for the agricultural community. Now farmers from the state will get crop insurance for just Re 1. The state government also fulfilled a long-pending demand of many farmers and farm associations, that the system for e-panchanama should be implemented to help conduct panchanamas quickly and help farmers get compensation within a short time.

Under the Mahatma Jotirao Phule Shetkari Karjmukti Yojana, 14.33 lakh farmers who regularly repaid their crop loans have been paid Rs 5,190 crore as an incentive amount, with the rest of the amount to be distributed expeditiously. The second phase of the Nanaji Deshmukh Agricultural Sanjeevani Project, worth Rs 6,000 crore, will be implemented in 21 districts. The Balasaheb Thackeray Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project approved 767 sub-projects worth Rs 1,561.64 crore, benefiting about 9 lakh farmers. The state government also announced a new scheme called Gaon Tethe Godam (godown in every village). In the first phase, the construction of 100 new godowns and the repair of existing ones will be undertaken.

Onion farmers of Maharashtra, who were not happy with the export policy of the Centre and didn’t vote in favour of the Mahayuti in the general elections, have been somewhat pacified by the announcement of a subsidy. An amount of Rs 851.66 crore at a rate of Rs 350 per quintal for the year 2023-24 has been allocated, and a revolving fund of Rs 200 crore each is being created for the assured purchase of onion and cotton.

The state government also announced the launch of a new scheme, Dairy Business Entrepreneurship Project, to create new entrepreneurs in the fields of animal husbandry, dairy farming, animal fodder, and animal feed production. The state has also been running a special campaign to complete irrigation projects. By the end of this financial year, 61 projects are expected to be completed, creating an irrigation potential of 3.65 lakh hectares.

Under the Maharashtra Irrigation Improvement Programme, the state government aims to improve the canal distribution systems of 155 projects, benefiting about 4.28 lakh hectares of area from direct irrigation. The state government intends to make all government irrigation schemes solarised, including the Janai-Shirsai and Purandar lift irrigation schemes, to achieve the goal of clean and green energy at an expected cost of Rs 4,200 crore.

Youth and employment

The state government has also announced various schemes for the youth of the state. Under the Mukhya Mantri Yuva Karyaprashikshan Yojana, training will be given to 10 lakh youths every year, who will also receive a stipend of up to Rs 10,000 per month from the government. For this, the state government will bear an expenditure of Rs 10,000 crore annually.

Every year, 50,000 youths will be trained to disseminate information about government schemes to the people, with a Rs 100 crore fund allocated for financial assistance to self-employment.

Fuel tax cut

In the municipal areas of Brihanmumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, the tax on diesel has been reduced from 24% to 21%. Also, the tax on petrol is down from from 26% + 5.12 rupees per litre to 25% + 5.12 rupees per litre. This provides relief to common citizens as well as industry and trade.

Due to this proposal, the price of petrol per litre in the municipal areas of Thane, Brihanmumbai, and Navi Mumbai will be cheaper by approximately 65 paise per litre and that of diesel by approximately Rs 2.07 per litre.

Exemption for paramilitary forces

The state government also announced an exemption from professional tax for five Central Armed Forces: Assam Rifles, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, National Security Guard, and Sashastra Seema Bal. The government believes this will benefit approximately twelve thousand soldiers.

An India Gems and Jewellery Park will be set up on 25 acres of land at Mahape in Navi Mumbai. It will include 2,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises with an investment of Rs 50,000 crore, which will generate one lakh jobs. An integrated and sustainable textile policy for 2023-2028 has been announced, envisaging a substantial investment of Rs 25,000 crore and generating 5 lakh jobs in the next five years.

The Captive Market Scheme will generate large-scale employment in the spinning, loom, processing, packing, and transportation sectors. The government has decided to set up small-scale textile industry complexes and technical textile parks to increase private investment.

A scuba diving centre of international stature will be set up in the Sindhudurg district, which will have coral sighting on a sunken ship as a special attraction. The project is expected to cost Rs 20 crore and will provide employment to 800 local people.

Infra boost

In this budget, Ajit Pawar also focused on big-ticket infrastructure projects. Metro lines of 449 km have been sanctioned in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, out of which 127 km is operational. Another 37 km of metro lines will be made operational in this financial year. The work of the Shivdi-Worli link road under the Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Project is 57% complete and is expected to be completed by the end of December 2025. The proposed Thane coastal road from Balkum to Gaymukh, with a length of 13.45 km, costing Rs 3,364 crore, is expected to be completed by May 2028. The work of the Dharmaveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road is almost complete and both lanes are partially opened for traffic.

The PM E-Bus Seva Scheme will be implemented in 19 municipal corporations to improve transport services and reduce air pollution. The scheme includes providing electric buses, constructing bus shelters, and charging infrastructure. A proposal has been sent to UNESCO to get World Heritage nomination for 12 forts of the Shiva period. Proposals will also be sent for Katal Shilpe in Konkan, Pandharpur Vari, Dahihandi Utsav, and Ganeshotsav. The government has decided to celebrate the Shivarajyabhishek ceremony at Raigad fort every year and necessary funds will be provided for it. A submarine project of international stature will be developed at Vengurla, Sindhudurg district, at an estimated cost of Rs 66 crore. An integrated tourism development plan worth Rs 381.56 crore has been approved for the development of tourist spots in the Western Ghat area of Satara district. This includes Sri Kshetra Mahabaleshwar development, Pratapgad fort conservation, Sahyadri tiger tourism, and Koyna Helwak forest Tourism.

An outlay of Rs 18,165 crore has been proposed under the district annual plan for the year 2024-25. This outlay is 20 per cent more than the previous year. Maharashtra's Mahayuti Govt Presents Staggering Rs 612,293 Crore Budget, More Than Pak And Bangladesh's for 2024-25

Reported By : Mayuresh Ganapatye

New Delhi, India

Ajit Pawar announced the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme for women as well as a bonus, crop insurance, and electricity bill waivers for farmers. He also slashed the tax on petrol and diesel in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai from 24% to 21%. (File pic/PTI)

Deputy chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who also holds the finance portfolio in the state, presented the sop-heavy interim budget in the assembly's ongoing monsoon session. This is the last legislative session before the state assembly polls, which will be in the next four months

Maharashtra’s Mahayuti government on Friday presented an eye-popping Rs 612,293 crore (around $73 billion) budget, which is more than Pakistan’s $67.84 billion and Bangladesh’s $68 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25.

An outlay of Rs.1.92 Lakh crore has been proposed under the Scheme expenditure in the Annual Plan 2024-25. It includes an outlay of Rs 15,893 crore for the Scheduled Caste Plan and Rs 15,360 crore for the Tribal Development Sub Plan. An outlay of Rs 6,12,293 crore is proposed for the total expenditure in the year 2024-25. The revenue receipts are proposed as Rs 4,99,463 crore and the revenue expenditure as Rs 5,19,514 crore. The revenue deficit is estimated at Rs 20,051 crore. The government has been successful in keeping the state’s fiscal deficit and revenue deficit within the limits set by the Fiscal Responsibility and Fiscal Management Act. The fiscal deficit for the year 2024-25 is Rs 1,10,355 crore.
