1.  Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary

This wildlife sanctuary is just about 19 km away from the Indore Airport and that makes it very easy to access. It is located in the area of Mirajpur. It has a plethora of flora and fauna that are conserved here. There are eucalyptus and sandalwood trees in large numbers, along with teal, sal and babul. There are a large number of blue bulls, rabbits, deer, and even leopards to be found here. One can get camelback ride inside the sanctuary if one wishes to go for a safari. One can also stay in the guest house inside the premises.

Entry to the Sanctuary is just INR 5 per person and it open from 9 am to 6:30 pm.

2. Patalpani Falls

This stunning waterfall is located about 35 km from the south west region of Indore and it is one of the most popular picnic spots near Indore. The waterfall is about 300 feet high and forms a dreamy backdrop for photographs. It can be accessed easily through the Indore- Khandwa train route. The falls is fed by rainwater and the water falls in full force and it is believed no one knows how deep the base of the waterfall is, and the water travels right up to the Patal, giving the falls its name. The region around the falls is great for trekking and the ample greenery around makes it a very relaxing place to visit.

One can visit between 6 am to 6 pm.

3. Omkareshwar

One of the 12 Jyotirlinga Temples in India, the Omkareshwar temple attracts devotees round the year. It is located in the island of Shivpuri in the Narmada River amidst very tranquil surroundings. It is said that the island has the shape of an Om and pilgrims from all over the country come to visit the holy abode of Lord Shiva here. Another temple, the Amareshwar, also dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located on the opposite bank and is considered equally holy.

The temple is located about 75 km from the Indore Airport and is open for a visitor from 5 am to 11 pm. Entry is free for all.

4. Ved Shala in Ujjain

It is said that this monument, also known as Jantar Mantar, was built in 1725 by Raja Jai Singh and was the first scientific observatory in India. It is because the Tropic of Cancer passes right through Ujjain and as well as the prime meridian of longitude, and makes it an ideal spot for such an observatory. Although neglected for a period of time, there is renewed interest in the monument here and now it has been restored to all its glory.

The observatory is located about 56 km away from Indore Airport and is located on Gita Bhawan Raod. It is open from 9 am to 8 pm and entry is INR 10 for adults and INR 5 for students.

5. Narmada Ghat, Maheshwar

The Narmada Ghat is very beautifully constructed in the city of Maheshwar, which is about 95 km away from the city of Indore. It is one of the offbeat places to visit and will surely leave you mesmerized with its scenic beauty. The Ghat is also known as Ahilya Ghat and it is a sight to behold the devotees offering their prayers at the river. The river is also a great place to go boating. You may also take a holy dip yourself and feel refreshed. The Ahilya Fort is located a short distance from the Ghat and is a must visit.

It is said that the Jahas Mahal was built during the reign of Sultan Ghiyas ud din Khilji in the late 15 th century and it is a prime historical spot around the city, around 95 km away from Indore. The Mahal is so named because it seems that it is afloat in the water of the Munj and the Kapur Talao. If one wants to understand medieval architecture, this is the best specimen in the region to do so. The architecture is a blend of Indian, Mughal, Afghan and also Mesopotamium architecture. The inside of the mahal is full of intricate carvings, and the balconies are wide and provide a striking view of the region beyond.

One can visit between 6 am and 6 pm and entry is INR 5 per person.

8. Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is another of the Jyotirlinga temples in India and is located on the Rudra Sagar lake, 85 km from Indore Airport. It is said that the idol inside the temple is Swayambhu in nature- that is, it created itself by channeling the force of Shakti, rather than being established manually, making this temple and the idol within extremely revered by the Hindus. This naturally adds to the mystic aura of the place and countless pilgrims visit here each year. The morning Bhasma Aarti begins at 4 am in the morning and one has to register beforehand to attend it. The temple premises are open from 3 am to 11 pm.

9. Hoshang Shah’s Tomb

Located about 86 km from Indore Airport, it is said that the tomb of Hoshang Shah in Mandu is the first complete marble edifice built in the country, way back in the 15 th century. It is a wonderful specimen of Afghani style of architecture and is a real treat for history buffs. The thing to note here is the miniature arches in blue enamel near the rim of the dome which makes it evident that it required exquisite craftsmanship. The sarcophagus of Hoshang Shah himself lies in the center. The doorways are heavily ornamented and there are stars and lotuses carved into them.

Visitors may visit between 8 am to 5:30 pm and entry is only INR 5.

10. Bahadur Mahal

Another mahal located in Mandu, this historical monument belonged to Baz Bahadur, who was said to be a great patron of art and music and was also extremely in love with his wife Roopmati. It is located about 96 km from Indore Airport. According to the inscriptions on the gate, the mahal was built in 1509 AD and there is a magnificent fountain in the middle of the premises. There are numerous rooms which were used for a number of purposes during the reign of the ruler, and a huge garden could be seen at the northern perimeters of the palace. The mahal is open for visitors from 8 am to 8 pm.

11. Lotus Lake

Located only 17 km from Indore Airport, the Lotus Lake or the Gulawat Talab is a real treat for sore eyes. It is thronged frequently by photographers for its scenic beauty. The lake is full of lotuses, which gives it its name. The waters of the lake are calm and pristine and it is not very heavily crowded, which will give you some time to relax and gather your thoughts. The banks of the lake have thickets of bamboo and many exotic birds are also to be seen and heard here, making for a very enchanting ambience. One can also go for boating here. The lake is open 24 hours and entry is free.

12. Chidiya Bhadak Waterfall

The Chidiya Bhadak Waterfall is another natural wonder near Indore and is located only 61 km away. The water plunges into the lake below with a stunning force and yet the sound is very sweet, which gives the falls its name. The surrounding landscape is very beautiful and is filled with greenery. It is a very popular located for photography and also for hosting picnics. Hiker also come here and camp around the various trails leading away from the falls. Entry is free and one can visit anytime.
