Thailand Elephant Tours

Elephant adventures in Thailand often take place at conservation reserves near Chiang Mai , where elephants frequently live after they are rescued from harmful environments. Trips often include traveling around the region like you would on a safari, learning about different varieties of elephants and exploring the surrounding terrain.

The tour was overall really well planned and itinerary worked out really well. Accommodation - Lana Palace Hotel was a decent place. Since another group requested my room I ended up getting an upgrade which was nice but also disappointing. The rooms shower head was broken and had a murky smell. 2star hotel that claims to be a 4star Meals - The included meals and the Elephant Conservatory and Morning tour was amazing. I loved the experience of watching alms giving, eating local porridge, and just emmersing in the culture of Chiang Mai. Would highly recommend the tour if you don't mind where you are staying!

Chiang Mai & Elephant Experience Tour

Chiang Mai & Elephant Experience

Once again the Intrepid guides were fantastic. Knowledgeable, helpful and friendly - experts in what they're there to do! However, I was disappointed with the package tour. It was a 3 day tour, but all up, guides assisted for a total of maybe a day and a half. Much of the time was spent self-exploring, which I don't mind, but to pay an amount for 3days seemed a bit extreme. The accommodation was lovely, perfect in fact, even though they were unaware of any of my tour details. I had to do a lot of extra research to ensure I was getting the most out of my time in Chiang Mai, with no suggestions of places to visit or how to get there from Intrepid. Love Intrepid, but could've done this one on my own.

Western Thailand Highlights with Elephants Care Tour

Western Thailand Highlights with Elephants Care

Our group of nine (teenage children and adults) spent about 5 days with Noom touring Thailand - we loved every single minute of our trip and give credit to Noom for being the perfect guide. He was knowledgeable, professional, polite, and a lot of fun to be around! He made our trip SO EASY! We never worried about anything, literally. He knew everything there was to know about all of the places we visited, he took us to delicious restaurants, he paid great attention to details so every experience we had was very special, he made sure we were always safe, and he went over and above to make all of our tours and experiences the very best! Noom helped make what would have been a nice trip an absolutely fabulous trip, and we would recommend him and his tour company, to anyone!

PHANG NGA ELEPHANT PARK

ETHICAL ELEPHANT PROGRAMMES

Phang Nga Elephant Park

A family with elephants at heart

Phang Nga Elephant Park is a small family-run Park. Our family has cared for elephants for over 150 years, with each generation learning something new about the Asian elephant and their welfare. The Park is like a typical small, rural Thai village, where thirty people live and work together with their elephants and families.

Animal welfare is paramount at Phang Nga Elephant Park. We consider that responsible and ethical elephant tourism will help to save the Asian elephant, but requires the highest level of care and husbandry. We are AGAINST unnatural and abusive practices and strive constantly to improve animal welfare and to promote education. For more information please check out our Education Centre .

We are determined to provide our elephants with the highest quality of life possible and our strong belief in human-elephant interaction is what makes Phang Nga Elephant Park so special. Our visitors are able to have a life-enhancing experience with these magnificent animals and learn about them in a natural and relaxed environment like our Khao Lak Elephant Sanctuary .

Elephant Care Experience

Family elephant experience, unique dawn or dusk elephant experience, special introduction to the asian elephant, sponsor an elephant @ phang nga elephant park.

Please make a pledge to support the PNEP Trust, so we can guarantee the future of our elephants. Any amount, large or small, will be gratefully received and acknowledged.

When you sponsor you can feel good knowing that you are directly supporting our elephants.

WHAT VISITORS SAY ABOUT US…

It was a very intimate experience that gave us an understanding of the bond between an elephant and his mahout (handler). If you are looking for an experience that goes a bit deeper than the typical tour then this is a must.

My best friend and I love elephants so this was our fourth elephant experience around the world. Nothing as come close to Phang Nga Elephant Park! It warmed our hearts to see the elephants treated like family.

Phang Nga Elephant Park is outstanding in their ethical treatment of the elephants and offers a rare and informative experience. An experience that really allows the individual to get to know the elephants. The Thai cooking lesson is also very enjoyable and the food that we prepared was delicious.

Absolutely beautiful set up and big thumbs up from a vet nurse with regards to welfare. Everyone at the park gets top marks for making my family and I feel welcome.

This was an unforgettable day! The elephants are clearly at home and well cared for. It was lovely plodding along on these huge and beautiful creatures at butterfly level through the trees.

We got to experience firsthand what being a mahout (handler) would be like. You get to wash them, feed them, play with them, ride them bare back and cook amazing Thai food.

The best four hours of wildlife interaction I have ever had. We had as much time as we wanted to feed, walk, groom, adore and even swim with the elephants.

The day I spent at Phang Nga Elephant Park has been the highlight of my holiday to Thailand. They care deeply about the health and well being of these magnificent creatures.

Had a superb family day with the elephants! The kids can’t stop talking about it. Highly recommend for anyone interested in visiting elephants in an environment that values animal welfare!

Thai elephants has been well known as the national symbol of Thailand for centuries. Thai people love elephants as much as the elephants show their love to them. UME Travel has meticulously prepared some occasions for visitors to get close to these giant and gentle animals, to touch them, to lead them walking through the forest, to bathe them, to prepare food for them and to experience their special characters in the national parks in Chiang Mai , Kanchanaburi, Khao Yai & Khao Sok national parks. Visitors also have opportunity to see other wildlife during the trips we prepared in Thailand. These amazing experiences are so special that you will really hard to find anywhere else in the world!

Top 10 Ethical Volunteer Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand

Why don't we recommend riding an elephant?

Elephants are untamed wild animals and they are not naturally suited to bear long periods of weight. In addition, elephant taming methods are also very cruel. In order to make elephants tame, elephant trainers use a traditional technique called "Pajaan". In this method, the tamer will first take the baby elephant away from the mother, whipped and starved, and finally fell into a stage of mental disintegration. At this point the elephant trainer would start feeding him food, riding on his back and training him to do the specified movements.

Past memories can have an ongoing effect on an elephant's mood. If they have suffered physical or psychological trauma, they will hold a grudge and wait for an opportunity to retaliate.

How many elephants are there in Thailand today?

There are only about 3,000 wild elephants in Thailand today and only about 4,000 elephants in captivity, and the problem of indiscriminate elephant hunting still exists.

What is the elephant festival?

Since 1998, the Thai government has designated March 13 every year as "Elephant Day" in the hope that the "Elephant Day" will arouse people's love and care for elephants and the heritage of elephant culture.

What's the difference between an elephant sanctuary with other elephant parks?

These elephant sanctuaries are different from ordinary elephant camps, they are mostly for the animal's welfare, with the goal of protecting the elephants, and most of their income is used for elephant conservation.

What are the activities in elephant sanctuaries?

In these elephant sanctuaries, you can learn elephant language to communicate with the elephants intimately, and you can feed them their favorite bananas, help them bathe, and play with them in the forest, which is the most natural and harmless way to get along with them.

Both adults and children can come to these parks. These places are especially suitable for parent-child activities, cultivating the love to animals in nature environment.

What are the special activities of being an elephant volunteer?

The staff here will provide volunteers with camp clothing to avoid getting dirty while playing with the elephants in the mud bath, and there will be a photographer to follow you and record the beautiful moments you spend with the elephants.

Learn to make elephant poo paper. The dried elephant dung is washed and dried to become the basic raw material for making paper, which can be dyed in various colors as needed. Next, the machine and water are used to mix the poo into pulp, and then filtered through a screen, dried, and then gently removed to make a rough but tough paper.

Although 75% of the raw material in elephant dung paper is elephant dung, because of the special process used, the product not only has no odor, but also has a very fine feel.

This paper can be used to make all kinds of things: greeting cards, notebooks, photo albums, calendars, pencil boxes, and even paper sculptures, which you can buy in the stores of the sanctuaries.

Our Project

With heart. With feeling. For elephants.

elephant special tours thailand

Adventure and animal welfare

There are many elephant tour operators in the north of Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai. Many offer half-day or 1-day trips with different approaches.

At first glance, our offer may appear more expensive than that of our competitors. But there are reasons: Away from mass tourism, the elephants can find their own food in the forests of Chiang Mai, Thailand. We also make a point of communicating our tours in German and English with important information and expert knowledge.

More details here:

Kein Massentourismus

No mass tourism

Often a lower price means that you will be part of a larger group.

With Elephant Special Tours you will be introduced to each elephant individually. Each of them has its own story – a story that we take the time to tell you.

Bathing in a large group can also be stressful for elephants if there are lots of people jumping around.

Natural nutrition on trips to the forest

Cultural connection, our elephant camps.

elephant special tours thailand

Elephants and people

There is an emotional debate about whether tourism projects with elephants in human hands are good for the animals. We would like to explain why our project was created. We firmly believe that the conservation of animals can only take place together with local people.

Criticism of elephant tours has focused on animal welfare arguments – for good reason: in fact, numerous camps have been opened in recent years in which profit maximization has been the primary corporate goal over the welfare of the elephants. With the aim of accommodating as many guests as possible in the shortest possible time, the animals are pushed to their limits and beyond.

But if elephant camps are no longer visited by responsible guests from all over the world, a disservice is being done to the animals. It forces the elephant camps to turn to customer groups who only want quick fun and pure entertainment.

Elephant Special Tours has established itself with an approach that offers a unique concept with individual, German- and English-speaking care for guests and a calm, respectful approach to the animals.

We are convinced that this special approach to bringing humans and elephants together meets the needs of the animals and offers them a way to look happily into the future in the 21st century.

Living tradition. Perceived future. Modern animal welfare.

Elephant husbandry has a millennia-old tradition in Asia, especially in northern Thailand, where working elephants were used intensively in the timber industry. The population of Asian elephants is declining from year to year. There are still around 3500 trained working elephants and around 3000 – 3500 wild elephants living in Thailand today. Since logging, in which domesticated elephants were used as working elephants for centuries, has been banned since 1989, the elephants can only earn a living for themselves and their owners in the tourism industry.

The elephants fed entire families – until there were no more forests to cut down. However, the animals, which can live up to 80 years, still needed a livelihood, just like humans. Tourism was the only way here. This repositioning of elephant keeping began with the construction of various camps, which were primarily geared towards short basket rides. We have chosen a different approach in order to ensure the best possible individual contact with the animals on the one hand and to allow the elephants a relaxed life in tourism on the other.

It is necessary to offer elephants a future by providing them with a life as close to nature as possible. This life-style is possible in their very own surroundings if we walk this path together with them.

Suggested Route

Itinerary in detail.

Your private guide and driver will greet you at the airport upon your arrival and drive you to the hotel where you can rest or wander around the hotel.

The famous Wat Pho is a must-see in Bangkok and the sacred Reclining Buddha attracts a great number of local citizens and travelers. Buddhist monks hold a holy ceremony here every day. As the sun rises, the monks gather in the hall and start chanting solemnly. You will have the chance to join this pious ritual.

Take a Thai tuk tuk ride via Pak Khlong Talat flower market. Visit the Grand Palace to see its imposing architecture, precious paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. Hop on a long-tailed boat and cruise along the Chao Phraya River to the grand Wat Arun .

Make a final stop at Bangkok's bustling China Town to see a different side of the city.

You will witness trains passing by a mere two feet in front of you at Maeklong Railway Market , just like a scene from an action movie.

The stalls close and reopen according to the train's arrival and departure. This is something that you can only experience here.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market will satisfy your curiosity about a typical floating market. The canals are filled with boats scrambling to sell fresh fruit, snacks, and other goods. Take a long-tailed boat down the canals of this bustling market

After having breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you in the hotel lobby and drive you to the airport to catch your flight to Phuket.

Your guide and driver will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel.

Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel and make your way through scenic agricultural areas, rolling hills, and beaches, to arrive at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket . Your guide will tell you the history of the sanctuary and give you knowledge of the elephants while you make preparations to meet them. Unlike other commercial places, riding and performance of the elephants are not allowed here. You will spend a half-day with the free-roaming elephants by feeding and bathing them, or simply being their playmate.

Enjoy a lunch of traditional Thai food consisting of freshly cooked Pad Thai and seasonal fruit. Say goodbye to the friendly elephants and return to the hotel.

The Phi Phi Islands have a popular reputation for their emerald waters, sugar-white beaches and relaxing resorts, which make them some of the top destinations in Thailand.

Hop on a speedboat at the Boat Lagoon Marina and visit Bamboo Island first. A particularly enchanting island of white sand, sparkling crystal-clear water, and a cloudless blue sky. You can swim or simply enjoy the sunshine. Continue to Yong Island , which is an ideal place for snorkeling. You can see antler corals and colorful tropical fish beneath the beautiful water.

Enjoy a simple local buffet lunch on arrival at Koh Phi Phi Don before taking a dip in the Viking Cave , known for its swifts' nests, the main component of bird's nest soup.

Cruise back to Phuket and transfer to your hotel.

Fully relax and enjoy family time on a sunny beach at your leisure.

Catch a flight from Phuket to Bangkok then take your flight home.

Thank you for traveling with Asia Highlights and we hope to help you again soon.
