Walk through history this July 4th at these Revolutionary War sites in NJ

nearby places to visit by walk

When you think about Independence Day, images of parades, barbecues, and fireworks come to mind. Another one that should be conjured up is time traveling.

That day — and other days during the summer — are also a good time to explore the historic sites around North Jersey that will transport the public to the fight for America's independence from Great Britain.

Here are a few events (free of charge unless otherwise indicated) to consider:

Fort Lee Historic Park, Fort Lee

Fort Lee Historic Park will be opened on July 4 . It is worth the visit to go back in time to the summer and fall of 1776 when this area of North Jersey was a key Revolutionary War battleground. From 10:30 to 1 p.m., the movie "1776," starring Ken Howard and William Daniels, will be screened in the auditorium of the Visitors Center. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., there will be a cannon firing and musket demonstration near the historic section of the park where there's a reconstructed officers’ hut.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Go : Enter on Hudson Terrrace j ust south of the George Washington Bridge and opposite Bruce Reynolds Boulevard.  There's a visitor center with information and context about this time in history. And the park also provides stunning views of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. And there's metered parking. For more information about the Fort Lee Historic Park , visit njpalisades.org/fortlee.html or call (201) 461-1776.

Revolutionary War Sites, Essex County

North Jersey residents who want to soak up more Revolutionary War history on Independence Day can check out various sites as mapped out by local historian Al Frazza, a Little Falls resident, on his  Revolutionary War New Jersey  website.

Go : Some of those places in Essex County include the Battle of Second River Memorial in the  Belleville  section of Branch Brook Park named for the battle that occurred in that area in 1777, Bloomfield Cemetery on Belleville Avenue on the  Bloomfield/Glen Ridge  border that is the resting place of several Revolutionary War officers, and the Hessian House on Millburn Avenue in  Millburn  where it is believed a pair of Hessian officers hid during the Battle of Springfield in 1780.

New Bridge Historic Landing, River Edge

The old cliche, "George Washington slept here," definitely applies to this historic area near the Hackensack River served as an intelligence-gathering post, battleground and encampment ground and military headquarters for Washington's army. The Steuben House, located at the site, was where Washington stayed. New Bridge Historic Landing is also the site of the bridge used by Washington’s army during its retreat from invading British forces on Nov. 20, 1776, which saved him from defeat.

Go : 1201 Main St. in River Edge . The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk for a self-guided walking tour, but the historic buildings at the New Bridge Historic Landing are open only for events. For more information, call 201-343-9492 (leave message on answering machine for the Bergen County Historical Society) or email: [email protected]

Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown

It's one thing to know about the Declaration of Independence. It is another to hear the words of this document that gave birth to a new nation. Morristown National Historical Park will celebrate the Declaration of Independence on July 4.

Starting at noon on the park's grounds, where General George Washington's army encamped in the winter of 1779-80, there will be a "Warm-Up for the Declaration" The Warm-Up will feature a park ranger in period clothing entertaining the crowd with stories and jokes and giving a "kids level" explanation of the Declaration. That's followed at 1 p.m. by a the "Public Reading of the Declaration of Independence" where visitors will be encouraged to cheer along with park rangers and re-enactor denouncing tyranny and praising liberty. After the reading, participants can join in a mock version of musket salute called a "feu de joie," where soldiers fire into the air sequentially in rapid succession.

Go: 30 Washington Place in Morristown . Visitors are asked to bring water to drink and a chair or a blanket to sit on the ground and dress appropriately for the weather. The event will happen rain or shine. Due to limited parking, guests are encouraged to carpool or walk to the event. For more information, visit nps.gov/morr/index.htm or contact Alexander Parody at (973) 539-2016 ext. 260.

In the high-demand modern world, many people erroneously equate “fast” with “good.” This focus on speed keeps us zipping through the city and countryside alike at breakneck speeds, rarely slowing down long enough to enjoy the sound of a street performer strumming a guitar, the smells of freshly-baked bread wafting from a bakery, or the sight of neighbors smiling as they pass one another.

These sounds, smells, and sights need to be idealized frivolity — they are the realities of living in or visiting a walkable city. To search out the most walkable cities outside of the United States, we asked our trusted readers to vote on their favorites. The results will certainly help you plan your next laid-back, walkable trip.

Canadian Parliament building in Victoria

18 Most Walkable Cities in the World

1. victoria, british columbia, canada (winner).

A visit to Victoria, British Columbia, is not complete until a traveler has had a stroll through the city’s Inner Harbor. This waterfront area has beautiful views, exciting events, and several interesting landmarks. Walkers can take a break from their meandering to have tea at the Fairmont Empress or visit the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia .

As appealing as the city itself is, Victoria also has some excellent green spaces. Butchart Gardens is generally considered to be the best, especially its Rose Garden and Sunken Garden. Visit in the fall to see nearly 100,000 tulips or in the winter for cozy Christmas events and displays.

Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London

2. London, England

London traces its roots back to the era of Roman Britain – thousands of years before the invention of the SUV. Though cars are everywhere today, many visitors and locals often opt to use a combination of walking, public transit, and cycling to avoid getting caught in a frustrating gridlock.

Some of the best walks in London are strolls along the Thames, along a canal, or for a little culture, between the Tate Britain and the Tate Modern. If the bustle of the city streets grows tiring, walkers can escape to the green of London’s beautiful parks .

Walking can also be a perfect way to experience some of London’s interesting markets , fabulous restaurants , and unique bookstores .

Ross Fountain in front of Edinburgh Castle

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh earns a spot on the list of our readers’ favorite walkable cities because of its compact city center and the number of hidden gems , pubs , and restaurants that are accessible in a dense area. The Royal Mile is the most famous area to explore on foot.

One of the best choices for exploring Edinburgh on foot is taking a self-guided walking tour like the one TravelAwaits writer Samantha Priestley experienced. She recommends exploring the best stops like Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, The Royal Botanic Gardens, and The National Museum of Scotland . This cross-section is an ideal introduction to one of Scotland’s great cities.

Ponte Alexander III bridge over the Seine in Paris

4. Paris, France

While Paris may be the “City of Love” for many people, it’s the “City of Walking” to others. It’s hard to know where to begin with a city that would take many lifetimes to fully explore, but the banks of the Seine have to be in the running. Another essential Paris experience is taking a stroll across the city’s many beautiful and historical bridges.

For a more curated experience, visitors may enjoy hunting down these romantic, hidden-away spots throughout the city or taking a themed walking tour . While there isn’t space to rattle off every good neighborhood in Paris to walk in, an arrondissement guide is a perfect resource to pick out which parts of the city suit your interests and preferences.

Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is legendary for its person-focused, rather than car-focused, streets. There’s no shortage of amazing things to do in Amsterdam , and you can walk or bike to just about all of them, depending on your level of mobility. Even the walking or cycling between each stop is a destination in itself, with views of canals, stunning architecture, and lively streets.

The Rijksmuseum,  Anne Frank House , and Van Gogh Museum are popular stops for those interested in art. People who want to see the nightlife – or are just curious – can explore the Red Light District . Regardless of what brings you to Amsterdam, you will almost certainly enjoy the pedestrian-friendly streets of the city.

6. Venice, Italy

Venice is similar to Amsterdam in a few prominent ways: most notably the absence of cars and the presence of canals. Stray from Venice’s larger canals and you may find yourself lost in the labyrinthine side streets of the city – but don’t fear, because getting lost can be one of the best ways to see a new city.

If you’d prefer to know where you are, there is no shortage of world-famous landmarks to walk to in Venice . Places like St. Mark’s Square and Basilica , the Rialto Bridge and Market, and the Accademia Bridge cannot be missed. There are also subtler places to explore, like the Acqua Alta Book Shop and much more.

Boboli Gardens in Florence

7. Florence, Italy

Florence is a gorgeous city associated with the Renaissance that has to be walked to be truly seen. Most people start around the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, one of the most famous churches in the world. Walkers will also enjoy a stroll through Repubblica Square or the Santo Spirito neighborhood.

For some natural beauty, walkers will enjoy visiting Boboli Gardens , an incredible, sprawling green area with intricate landscaping and integrated architecture, sculptures, and even an amphitheater. For reference, some compare Boboli Gardens to the gardens at Versailles in France. It’s hard to resist going for a walk in such a place.

8. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is a magical city, and no other city in the world is quite like it. That said, knowing how to approach such a place can be daunting. Luckily, these guided walking tours will give you a chance to use your time efficiently. Whether you prefer the history of rebellions or delicious food, you’ll be able to find a tour to match your taste.

For a unique take on Dublin’s literary history , fans of James Joyce can take a “ Bloomsday ” walk in honor of the novel Ulysses – though some fans may find it easier to read a few pages with a pint of Guinness at one of Dublin’s many excellent pubs .

The Roman Forum

9. Rome, Italy

All roads lead to Rome, as the saying goes, and our trusted readers find those roads enjoyable to walk. While Rome is a modern cosmopolitan city full of great restaurants , cafés , and hotels , the Eternal City’s many ruins and historical sites make for fascinating walks.

It’s essentially impossible not to mention the Colosseum , the Pantheon, and the Forum when speaking of Rome’s historical sites, but other places like the Baths of Diocletian and the Circus Maximus are interesting areas for walking and learning. Visiting a lesser-known historical neighborhood like Trastevere can be another good way to explore.

10. Copenhagen, Denmark

The infrastructure alone makes Copenhagen a delight to walk (or bike), but the dense city center and good public transportation make getting around without a car a breeze. For a more dedicated walk, visitors may enjoy strolling through City Hall Square or taking a tour of Christiansborg Palace or Amalienborg Palace.

The Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park with seasonal offerings that are particularly pleasant during Christmas time. For a more classic, green-garden experience, enjoy King’s Garden at the foot of Rosenberg Castle.

Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

11. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the kind of city that is meant to be enjoyed on foot. For a taste of some eye-catching architecture, many walkers begin in the Gothic Quarter — the historic center of Barcelona and home of the Plaza del Pi , the medieval Jewish Quarter, and other notable landmarks.

On the topic of architecture, Park Güell is simply unmatched by any other place in the world. Its fantastical design will captivate any visitor and walking through the area is truly the only way to fully experience it.

12. Berlin, Germany

The first readers’ choice on this list in Germany, Berlin is one of the great capitals of the world. Its painful history throughout the 20th century has made for an inspiring story of reunification and given rise to a city that expresses itself through art and music. The Kreuzberg neighborhood is a great example of this balance.

Berlin’s Tiergarten is likely the city’s most famous — and for good reason. The enormous green space is home to the Berlin Zoo , various monuments, playgrounds, paths, and areas of relaxation. It’s the perfect place to chill out after a long day in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.

Frontenac Castle in Old Quebec City

13. Québec City, Quebec, Canada

Québec City is a rare place in North America. A confused traveler would be forgiven for thinking that they found themselves in Europe after a brief walk in this Canadian city. Naturally, Old Québec City – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is one of the loveliest areas to walk through. Exploring this neighborhood is like crossing the Atlantic without the hefty price tag and long flight.

Battlefields Park offers a green refuge from the city, plus an extensive list of activities available. Just outside of the city, Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency Falls Park) is a complete escape and an ideal day trip for those who prefer waterfalls to buildings.

14. Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg may be known best for its association with The Sound of Music , Mozart, and its UNESCO-listed historic city center, but on top of all that, it’s also a supremely walkable city. Those who enjoy a people-watching walk on a square can visit the Residenzplatz, while shoppers delight in a stroll along the Getreidegasse.

One of the great walkable draws of Salzburg is the Mirabell Palace and Gardens . While the palace itself is a magnificent historical structure that warrants a full visit, the surrounding gardens are a dream for walkers who enjoy the structure and design of a carefully manicured garden. Without mentioning any names, it gives the elaborate gardens of other European nations a run for their money.

Granville Street in Vancouver

15. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

There’s a lot to see and do in Vancouver, but a popular approach to the city is to start in the dense, exciting downtown and move outward. Downtown Robson Street is called a “must-stroll” by the city’s tourism bureau, and the shoppers and diners who can be found there daily confirm this fact. If Robson Street is a “must-stroll,” then Granville Street is a “must-sip” (or “must-stumble”) for those who enjoy the nightlife.

For a different perspective, visit Queen Elizabeth Park – the highest point in the city at 125 meters (410 feet) above sea level. The views, art, activities, gardens, and conservatory are all worth the trip.

16. Vienna, Austria

While Vienna has a special charm during Christmas time , it’s a lovely city for a walk year-round. Like most walkable cities, it’s wise to try out the older central districts; in this case, that means the Inner Stadt and its opera house, cafés, restaurants, and museums. There are plenty of other neighborhoods worth walking in as well.

The crown jewel of Vienna’s park system is the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens . Located at the summer palace of the Habsburg rulers, the beautiful gardens are a feast for the eyes and are home to the city zoo, a maze, and other interesting features. A walk through the gardens – or any of Vienna’s parks – can be part of a perfect day.

17. Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City is huge but its walking neighborhoods are favorites for residents and visitors alike. It’s a city of wide sidewalks and integrated bike lanes, lush parks and cool street tree canopies, and dense, mixed-use urban areas. Nearly every neighborhood within the Circuito Interior , Mexico City’s giant ring road, has a walk score above 95.

What makes Mexico City a great city to enjoy on foot is that its policymakers, civic groups, and businesses embraced the natural walkability that survived the boom in the post-war era and developed new urban innovations.

18. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s main attractions can be seen within a day as most of the city’s numerous attractions are accessible only by foot. With its enchanting cobblestone streets and historic architecture, as one of the most iconic cities in Europe, Prague offers an opportunity to really feel the atmosphere of this centuries-old city.

The Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the Prague Zoo , are located within 4.1 miles of each other. From there you can quickly walk Prague’s narrow streets to so many other sights. More than 50 percent of the Czech capital is covered by urban greenery, including beautiful parks such as the Royal Garden , which add to the unique atmosphere.

Which Is the Most Walkable Country In Europe?

The United Kingdom is one of the most walkable countries in Europe. London, Glasglow, and Edinburgh are some of the world’s most walkable cities due to their small sizes and numerous car-free pedestrian zones.

What Is the Most Walkable City in the USA?

It’s New York City. With 58 miles of paths in Central Park alone, the city’s emphasis is to provide ample opportunity for walks. Its public transport system is the best in the country, making everything in the city within walking distance.

What Is Considered a Walkable City?

A walkable city prioritizes public transport and pedestrian-oriented infrastructure and enables more journeys on foot. Walkability has been defined as the extent to which the built environment is pedestrian-friendly and enables walking.

Why Do Europeans Walk More?

It’s a cultural norm in Europe, more so than in America. Europeans tend to live in more concentrated spaces in cities, where there are sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, etc. Cars have been part of the “American dream” for about 100 years so it’s not surprising that Americans walk much less than Europeans.

What Are the Five Most Walkable Cities in the World Outside the USA?

The top five most walkable cities in the world are Hong Kong, Moscow, Paris, Bogotá, and London. Closeness to car-free places, closeness to healthcare and education, and size of city blocks were the three measures when determining the most walkable cities in the world.

10 very Tallahassee things to do, places to eat, adventures to take

“Thank you for inspiring me to get out and see Tallahassee through different eyes,” said my friend Erin when I shared my book, "100 Things to Do in Tallahassee Before You Die ."

I wanted to share my love for this community and for people to get curious once again, rediscover and enjoy some of the hidden gems our community and surrounding areas offer, and start doing things they have never done before.

I wanted them to stop saying there was nothing to do in Tallahassee and enter a world they never knew existed.

What follows are some of my favorite things to do in Tally.

1. Walk FSU Campus

Most of us have driven by campus, graduated, worked, or seen parts of it. But have you taken the time to take a walking tour of the Florida State University campus ? The energy is different. There is a sense of peace, history, and beauty all around you, and you begin to wonder how you had never seen it before. It is especially so when all the students are gone. Park your car, walk from one end of campus to another, and explore the magic within.

This weekend: Looking for fun events? Top 5 things to do around Tallahassee

2. Dine at Bella Bella

It is one of my favorite places to enjoy fantastic food, have great conversations, and be surrounded by family. Nestled in the heart of Midtown, Bella Bella is one of those places that makes you feel relaxed as soon as you walk in, and it's the best restaurant for homemade fresh Italian food.

3. Hang at Fish Camp

It’s a bit of a drive, but the dirt parking lot, an alluring lake view, and live music will let you know you have arrived. Fish Camp is a true North Florida hangout frequented only by locals. A hidden treasure with a casual, inviting atmosphere and an unbelievable view. Grab a seat, order food and drinks, sit by the fire, and be ready to chill.

4. Hike Alford Greenway

There’s never a day you can’t hike, bike, or horseback ride the trails at J.R. Alford Greenway . Almost 20 miles of hidden yet well-marked trails loop around open fields filled with wildflowers. This is the perfect place to lose yourself and not be worried about time.

5. Tree to Tree Adventure

If you are ready to get off the ground, stop by the Tallahassee Museum Tree to Tree Adventure to explore 52 acres up to 60 feet in the air on a tree trail adventure filled with wobbly bridges, tightropes, nets, crab walks, jungle bridges and an unforgettable glide over Lake Bradford.

6. Latin dance lessons

There is a special place where the Latin community can unite, move their hips, feel the music, and learn how to dance with friends. Studio D is the only place in Tallahassee with monthly socials, Salsa night, and Bachata Fever. No one would ever know you learn to dance in Tallahassee; it will be our little secret.

7. Beach day getaway

Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches are a quick adventures-and-escapes ride away from Tallahassee. Get in the car and drive without high rises, strip malls, or tourist traps, and step into the Forgotten Coast Beaches .

8. Bradley's Country Store

Step into almost 100 years of history and tradition in one humble, small, unforgettable place, Bradley’s Country Store . The delicious smell of homemade sausage will welcome you, while the uniqueness of the place will enchant you. You will find seasonings, raw and cooked meats, drinks, and souvenirs. Around the corner is Old Centerville Road, a beautiful unpaved road that ends in Georgia and is loved by runners.

9. Blue Tavern

It is a place to connect, be surrounded by good company, and enjoy a night filled with art, music, and no TV. Blue Tavern is a hole-in-the-wall pub with live music nightly, from bluegrass to jazz and even open mic night. You can eat, drink coffee, or find a drink that lifts your soul in a calming vibe.

10. Mimi's Table Bistro

Be ready for a flavorful and exquisite experience at Mimi’s Table Bistro and Wine Bar . European technique and cuisine meet Southern roots to create an exceptional dining experience. Stay on the lookout for their coveted monthly Chef’s Meals, and know that the best seat in the house is by the window.

Located in a beautiful area. There was surprisingly a lot to do, especially for little ones. A splash pad, little play area. Lots of different stores, my only suggestions would be having a bubble tea place or like a sweet treat. The restaurants were large and nice looking, obviously didn't dine at them all in one trip lol.

The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley is a lifestyle center located in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. Major stores include American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Brooks Brothers, Fresh Market, Old Navy, AMC Theatres with 16 screens including an IMAX theater and Dolby theater with reclining seats. The only bad thing, is every time we come to this shopping center, it seams that another store has left... they have more and more empty stores.. very sad.

Nice restaurants but don't plan on taking a walk on a nice evening after dinner if it is after 9:00 or you will be promptly asked by security to leave the premises. Very disappointing to see what has happened. A large number of vacant stores. Desperately in need of new management.

This place is beautiful. I love several restaurants here. Best Thai, best sushi and one darn good steak house too! The layout is exceptional and even in the late fall is fun to walk around. They have a fireplace outside for sitting by and sipping coffee. There's a movie theater and all the best stores! I hope these stores survive the lockdown policies. Because this is a gem in the Lehigh Valley. Highly recommend you give it a look. Moore of parking, great food and great supermarket!

Nice place to walk around & relax. I rarely shop here because I don't believe any of the stores carry plus size clothing other than Old Navy and even that is a hit or miss. Hence, the 4 star rating. But I do enjoy the Barnes & Nobles, the myriad restuarants, the cinema, & Starbucks, of course. It's lovely in the Winter and even better in the Summer.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have zero tolerance for fussy things or pretentious bullshit. Of course in coming to The Promenade Shops you are hit with quite a bit of both. Let me think, what do I actually like about coming here? They have what is probably the largest B&N in the area and the shopping area is fairly easy to get to from multiple areas being near 378, 309 and 78. Past that, you really got me on what the hell the point is in coming here. I'll admit that my thoughts are biased as to me shopping is the devil and I would rather get my nose cauterized with a soldering gun than come here. The parking situation here after dark is first class miserable. Maybe if you're trying to get the to the L.L. Bean it's not so bad as their location is all the way over to the far side of the place but for places like B&N or the Rave/Carmike/AMC movie joint at best you'll be up by the entrance road or around in the back out in the comparative sticks. Past that most of the stores such as Wells Fargo, Hair Cuttery, Yankee Candle, a state run liquor store, Old Navy, GNC, the chain jewelry stores and the sneaker stores all exist at other area locations which are a million times easier to navigate and get in/out of. Another Yelper said it best from her review a few years ago, it's like this place has a case of multiple personalities. Take middle of the road chain stores that exist in most cases at many other area locations and combine it with overpriced food options which so badly want to be trendy, hip and Yuppie upscale so that they can overcharge to no end and put it with all exterior entrances so that for 1/3 of the year you'll freeze your ass off if you come and that's the backbone for a "lifestyle mall"? No wonder retail in this country is imploding.

The line is always rather long and the staff a little short tempered. This time in particular the woman who checked me out was totally miserable and beside herself bc she needed to place an online order for me since they didn't have my items in stock. She continued to huff and puff, couldn't find sku numbers and needed me to pull them up and then said" okay so what do you need" with an attitude when I told her I needed another item. I told her if it was too difficult I'd do it at home. Extremely unprofessional & seemed to need much more training so she didn't get so beside herself while checking someone out... I'm sorry- this review was intended for old navy

Now, you probably won't make the drive out here unless visiting friends or family. Still, it is worthwhile to check out this outdoor mall which has a cinema as well as interesting dining options. Here is a flavor of what to expect here. * LL Bean Factory Store (read below for more details) * New Balance Store * Banana Republic * American Eagle * Barnes and Noble Bookstore * Cosi Restaurant * Stride Rite * Yankee Candle * Ann Taylor Loft I will have to give my personal 2 cents on the mall. I really liked the whole open air atmosphere with central gazebo with Starbucks. This promotes people to get fresh air and walk from store to store which are on small islands. LL Bean Review at the Promenade Shops ================================= I really enjoyed my visit at LL Bean because there are clinics that are run on-site. I took a fly fishing lesson at the small pond behind the store. THERE ARE FISH IN THE POND! You can really try your luck with LL Bean instructor. However, you are given just a feather on the end without a hook. Otherwise, my instructor told me that fishing licenses are required. Here is a few things to expect for clinics at this particular store. * Fly fishing lessons * Canoe/kayak lessons There is a fee for the lesson but I have never heard of opportunities like this. You don't have to drive all the way out of civilization like Delaware Gap to get a whole weekend lesson. Also, I got my favorite shoulder-strap bookbag sent out for repair. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Here is a side comment to take note for people who use their repair service. LL Bean no longer have its lifetime guarantee but instead have the lifetime satisfaction. Basically, this means they will replace your obsolete bag for an updated bag in stock. The charge for repairs and delivery does not make it worthwhile for LL Bean to continue this service. However, the nice lady made an exception for me since I could not part with my leather-bottom bookbag with my undergrad alumni sewed-on patch. A little trickier since they had to call the main factory in Freeport, Maine. But, it was totally worth it with a small fee which was nothing since the bag was worth a whole lot more than the updated all-canvas without leather bottom.

Very beautiful outdoor promenade mall - unfortunately, not the most ideal place to go to when the weather is not cooperating ( standalone stores with great landscape ). A few very good restaurants, mostly premium brands along with a movie theater. Great place when the weather is nice - very easy to get to and conveniently located. A bit on the pricey side though. A nice feature is the splash spray playground in the center w/Starbucks cafe - great spot to hangout with the young ones. PROS - beautiful layout, name brand stores, easy access, ample parking, free parking is near the stores and on the outside. Nice center w/starbucks and spray playground during summer heat ( kids will enjoy ). CONS - pricey, no cover from the elements ( no roofing, directly walk into the stores ), really can only enjoy half the year : not worth going when the weather is not nice ( except for the movie theater ). TIPS - when hot, try parking under the trees or towards the rear ( less crowd ), they have a n

Another chance to see the aurora? Predictions say this weekend could be good.

Forecasters at the space weather prediction center are closely watching sunspots for the next chance at northern lights..

nearby places to visit by walk

BOULDER, Colo. ‒ Skygazers eager for their next chance to see the northern lights have a powerful ally on their side: a small group of space weather forecasters monitoring the sun for the next big solar explosion .

Last month's thrilling display of the aurora seen as far south as Florida was highly unusual. But experts say the next several years could see even bigger displays as the sun enters the height of its typical 11-year sunspot cycle.

And in a secure facility in Boulder, forecasters with the federal Space Weather Prediction Center are eagerly awaiting its next move. Inside the center, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, giant screens display images of the sun through various filters, from visible light to its powerful magnetic field and the solar flares constantly boiling off its surface.

"We're always just trying to figure out what's going to hit our little blue marble," senior forecaster Shawn Dahl said.

Extra-strong sunspots, which are often accompanied by the sun ejecting vast amounts of superheated plasma, can trigger auroras but also pose a danger to satellites, airplanes, GPS navigation and the power grid.

While people living near the poles ‒ from Alaska, Iceland and Finland to New Zealand and Australia ‒ often see the aurora during the winter, last month's display was unusual because it was visible in many places that don't typically see them, especially during late spring.

Experts say the typical viewing patterns are likely to continue, but the large sunspot makes it more likely another massive display could happen soon across vast swaths of the United States.

Typical aurora displays are forecast with only a few hours advance notice, but large ones like last month's were generated by a solar explosion that could be seen by forecasters days before it splashed across Earth's atmosphere.

Tapping into data from a constellation of satellites aimed at the sun, forecasters are again watching the sunspot group known as Region 3697, along with solar flares and what are known as coronal mass ejections ‒ massive eruptions of plasma so strong they have their own magnetic fields.

Displayed as a gray disturbance on the sun's surface, it's hard to understand the region's scale: That sunspot cluster is 15 times larger than Earth. And the sun is 93 million miles away.

From 93 million miles to a field near you

Dahl said that while the center's forecasts are widely used by electric utilities, satellite operators and other large organizations, they are only now becoming familiar to ordinary people.

On May 10, as the aurora display was just about to begin, a nephew doing spring planting in North Dakota called to report the GPS on the tractor was off by 12 feet when it's usually accurate to a centimeter, Dahl said.

"This is the first time in my life I've gotten a space weather report from a family member," Dahl said. "I'm used to getting called, being asked: 'How much snow are we going to get? What's the threat from hail today?' And he's telling me the system was taking them in circles."

In last month's event, the impact from the plasma was so strong it temporarily shoved the Earth's magnetic field closer to the planet, causing some satellites to lose their orientation. Government-funded satellites are typically built to withstand solar storms and have multiple redundant navigation systems, but smaller, cheaper ones may not.

The Environmental Defense Fund, which earlier this year launched a methane tracking satellite from California, temporarily halted some calibration work on its $88 million device while the storm passed, said Peter Vedder, senior director of mission systems for MethaneSAT. Built in Colorado, the 770-pound satellite is still getting into its operating location about 360 miles above the Earth.

Though light from solar flares and coronal mass ejections reaches the Earth in about 8 minutes and charged particles known as protons arrive in 15 minutes, ejected particles may take two to four days to hit and be deflected by the Earth's magnetic field. Usually, auroras are most pronounced around the poles because of the shape of the Earth's magnetic field.

"You can't steer yourself around it, you can't fly around it. You have to design (the satellite) to be robust enough to handle it," Vedder said. "You tend to turn off some more sensitive electronics and wait it out for a day."

Messing with communications systems

Starlink, the Elon Musk company that has launched more than 4,000 satellites to provide worldwide internet service, said it had weathered the May storm without incident: "Starlink satellites are under a lot of pressure, but holding up so far," Musk posted on his social media platform, X, on May 11.

In 2022, 38 newly launched Starlink satellites burned up after a mild solar storm created unexpected conditions in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Starlink and forecasters at the prediction center in Boulder now work more closely to monitor potential disruptions, especially during satellite launches.

Starlink satellites orbit closer to Earth than many other satellites, and scientists discovered that solar storms can temporarily "thicken" that area, creating unanticipated drag.

Solar flares and coronal ejections also can affect long-distance power lines used to transmit electricity. Because solar storms jostle the Earth's magnetic field, they can create power surges that burn out transformers and other equipment.

In 1989, an estimated 6 million Canadians and northern New England residents lost power for nine hours as a result of solar-induced surges. With warning, utilities can take steps to reduce the damage, and one of the largest transmission groups recently installed a first-of-its-kind system to automatically protect its power lines.

The most powerful geomagnetic storm in history, 1859's Carrington Event, sparked auroras so bright they reportedly woke gold miners inside their tents in Australia, burned out telegraph equipment and lit the sky brighter than the full moon.

Solar storms also alter how radio waves travel through the atmosphere and can mess with radar and radio communications.

Dahl said commercial airliners often must take longer routes closer to the equator during solar storms so their radio communications with air traffic control officials remain reliable. And planes taking over-the-pole flights may have to detour to avoid heavier-than-usual radiation exposure.

Predicting space weather can be challenging

Leading up to and during the May storm, space weather forecasters held regular briefings with power utilities and other groups to answer questions, and six hours before the storm's "strong, sudden arrival" drove home warnings of just how powerful it would be.

"That gave them six hours of lead time, to say this is going to happen, be ready," Dahl said. "And they were ready. There were plenty of effects, they were busy ... and fortunately, as far as we know, they did not suffer any bulk system impact. "

In the future, Dahl said, space weather forecasters probably will play a role in safety considerations for space tourists and for NASA's efforts to return to the moon and send astronauts to Mars. He said upcoming science satellite launches will improve the center's space forecasts but noted how hard it can be to accurately forecast the weather on Earth.

"We're forecasting stuff from 93 million miles away, so it's very difficult. And our science is limited," Dahl said. "We can do a great job of predicting the probability that the flare will happen, and if so, what level it might get to, and the same with radiation storms, but we have no way of knowing that a flare is imminent. That science doesn't exist. We have to wait for them to happen."

Dahl, an amateur astronomer and night sky photographer who missed the May 10 display because he was working, said he's hopeful for a new display. Dahl also noted that sunspot activity is expected to increase for the next year, then ramp down again, giving skywatchers plenty of opportunities for more displays.

"We still haven't reached the peak," he said. "We're not even close to being done with this cycle yet."

Our Favorite Places to Take a Walk

Delightful destinations around Rochester to meander, mosey, saunter, and stroll.

I firmly believe that walking is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. It provides movement, a change of scenery and perspective, and a chance to be alone or share your thoughts with a friend. If you’re accustomed to walking around your neighborhood and crave something new, this list of guided walks with smaller groups or off-the-beaten-path options may be interesting. As for me, I consider myself a walker at heart.

I enjoy exploring new and familiar places on foot, taking the time to observe and appreciate everything around me. Whether it’s a city, village, forest, lakeside, or glen, I enjoy the small details and fleeting moments that can only be experienced by slowing down. You don’t need a specific plan or agenda to start your slow-paced adventure. I have some suggestions for you that might help you get started.

Some places offer paved pathways, while others call you to explore the grid of a rock city or climb dozens of steps through a creek gorge. We visit these locations repeatedly, either with different people or alone, each season. Over time, we’ve known them intimately and enjoy discovering new perspectives in familiar territory.
