We had a wild time at my kid’s combined birthday party. With a Safari theme party and an amazing animal show, the kids had a blast. And you can share in the fun because all the resources for this safari party are listed at the bottom.

Easy Safari themed party decorations

Some stacked hula skirts from the dollar store worked fantastic for this safari backdrop.You could also stack these raffia table fringe skirts

I also got some animal print fabrics and draped it in front, some animal print lanterns and bandanas .

A big piece of zebra pattern burlap found at my local fabric store was perfect as a tablecloth.

I used all the printables from my Animal Safari printable set to make several banners.

These easy printable animal print lanterns with raffia fringes make for a quick and fun safari decoration.

I loved these animal print balloons so much I placed them all around. The kids had so much fun bringing them home too.

Here I tried to unsuccessfully hide the air conditioning unit with those balloons… hum … that’s when I wish I had invested in a screen.

I used a bunch of stuffed animals all over the tables. It’s amazing how many stuffed animals a kid can accumulate over the years!

I found these cool dessert plates, napkins and cups that so perfectly matched the theme HERE .

Safari themed party treats

Coming up with safari themed foods was a bit tough but then I stumbled on these fantastic hippos from Kinder ! A slam dunk!

We also had twigs (pretzels), wild tails (grape and strawberry skewers), cheetah puffs (cheese puffs) and of course animal crackers served with popcorn in individual treat boxes, as well as wrapped chocolate minis.

I renamed the lemonade Sahara Spring, wrapped the water bottles, and offered some more mature refreshments for the parents staying over in a cooler tagged “survival gear” 🙂

This year I saved a little money by making my own cake. I pouring over the internet for ways to make animal prints on frosting and was very pleased with the results. I explained how I made it in How to make and animal print safari cake .

I also crafted the festive cake topper by cutting small triangles out of the full sheets of the animal print pattern. I used the 2″ cupcake toppers to add the ages of the girls.

The entertainment

This year I bought the craft instead of making it. These How to make and animal print cake from Oriental Trading fit the bill nicely.

The main event was the animal show from Reptacular Animals . If you live in the Los Angeles area I would highly recommend them. They were wonderful! We had 15 mixed animals from snakes to chinchillas to scorpions. We moved some outdoor furniture in the shade of a tree and draped a canvas on the ground for the kids to sit on.

If you are lucky enough to live near a Mexican party store, most will make whatever shape piñata you’d like. They’re always over sized and cheaper than any small piñatas found at chain party stores.

Well fed (sugared up), educated, and exhausted, the kids left the party with one of these adorable stuffed animals . What fantastic memories!

5 Essentials for a Safari Themed Birthday Party

Themed parties are the most enjoyable event to host and to be invited too as well. When planning for a birthday party , there are many themes you can choose from. Let's say you choose a safari-themed party; the amount of things that you can do with this one is overwhelming! You will have a lot of fun decorating and making your guests feel like they're on a real trip. Below are 5 essential tips to get you started.

1. Invitations

Theme parties are all about making an idea come to life; there are many ways you can do so. The first thing you need to do is to treat it like it's real. So when hosting your party, consider creating passport-like invitations. You can write your address and end it with “Africa”; you can also give instructions and safety tips on it; so that the kids survive the trip they're about to embark upon.

Not skilled in arts and crafts? No worries! You can always get ready-made, safari-themed invitation cards online. There are tons with great designs, which will only need you to handwrite the important details, such as the name of the birthday celebrant, venue, date, time, and dress code. This way, you can save time and focus your energy on more important aspects of organizing a fantastic safari-themed birthday party.

2. Costumes

Another way you can make your hosts feel like they're on a safari is to have them dressed in khaki pants/shorts, gloves, scarves, hats, and hand them binoculars, like the Thinspeak Toys . You can also make little furry ears and tails that the children can wear. Make sure to have some animal masks around and have jungle sound effects in the background to make it even more realistic.

3. Backyard Games

You can't host a party without games, right? Which is why you need to prepare some backyard activities for kids so they can have the utmost fun together. Not all your games need to be safari themed, you can have regular activities that kids genuinely enjoy. Anything from giant bubble wands to huge Jenga blocks will do. But, you can also have safari charade cards, monkey says monkey do, etc.

4. Decorations

Decorating the house is the best part because you can get all creative with this one and it'll never seem like it's too much. Stick different animal prints on the floor and have directional signs around your place. You can also have plants around your house and hang ropes around them and hang them to the wall. Consider hanging torches around and have random animal prints on the wall and the floor. You could also add an indoor birthday party chandler .

5. Food and Drinks

What's a party without food and drinks? Creating safari-themed food is very easy. Bake a jungle cake with icing leaves and little animals on it. You can also make animal stripped pizzas, have a gummy worm station and use animal cookie cutters for sandwiches. Get green soda that has gummy worms inside, and you can add pop rocks on the side so the kids can add it to the drink. If you have ever thought about custom outdoor kitchens , this would be a good time to set that up. This is an overall upgrade to your back yard that will be useful for any birthday parties, socializing events, and overall adds value to the home. There is so much you can do to add to your safari theme with an outdoor cooking area from food prep to designing your theme to incorporate the cooking itself.

Creating a theme party is a lot of fun for you and your children. There is a lot of creativity that goes in making it seem real and that's only half the fun. The last thing we want to do is leave you hanging. So we’re here to answer all your questions. And if you’re not finding what you need here, feel free to call your local park for extra support.

Who Should I Include As A Birthday Jumper?

Anyone who wants to jump and have access to all park attractions. Members do not participate for free at birthday parties and must be included in the jumper total if they plan to participate. If someone wants to observe the fun or join you in the party room, they don’t need to be a paid jumper. The minimum number of jumpers for a party is 10.

Can I Add Jumpers Later?

Yes. Contact your Event Coordinator at least 48 hours prior to the party to add jumpers.

Is The Birthday Child Included In The Count?

Yep! The birthday child is part of the jumper count.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Have My Birthday At Defy?

All ages are welcome to celebrate their birthday at DEFY!

What Time Is Check-in For Birthday Parties?

All your guests will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to your party start time (make sure to include this on your invites!). This allows time for the entire group to get through check-in, verify waivers and store any personal items.

What Happens During Check-in?

First you will be greeted by your party host! Waivers will be verified; you will receive wrist bands and grip socks and items that will go to the party room will be placed on a cart specifically for your group. After everyone is checked in you will be asked to pay the remaining balance. Anything added during the party and tips can be paid at the completion of the party.

When Do I Have Access To The Party Room?

The party room is available for the last hour of the party (after the jump time).

What Does The Party Host Do?

Your party host will ensure your room is set up with plates, cups, napkins and utensils. They will assist with the cake and decoration set-up, food and beverages during the time in the party room and clean-up.

If The Party Room Is Only Available For The Last Hour, What Do I Do With My Items During The Jump And When Can I Decorate?

When you check-in, we will store your items, so you don’t have to worry about them! Around 15 minutes before the jump time ends, we will help you set up any additional decorations. Please no pinatas, confetti, and glitter!

Do You Provide Paper Goods?

Yes. We provide plates, cups, napkins and utensils for all guests! Ask your Event Coordinator which colors the park provides.

What If I Want Themed Plates, Cups, Napkins, Etc?

You may bring themed items. Let your Event Coordinator know what items you will be bringing and what items you would like us to provide.

How Many Pizzas And Sodas Are Included In The Price?

With the EPIC and MEGA VIP party packages, 1 large pizza and 1 pitcher (or 2L bottle) of soda is provided for every 5 jumpers. The BASIC party package does not include pizza or drinks.

How Many Slices Are In The Pizzas?

Can i purchase additional pizza and drinks.

Yes. Contact your Event Coordinator at least 48 hours prior to your party to purchase additional pizza and drinks.

Can I Bring My Own Snacks Or Food?

With the EPIC and MEGA VIP party packages, you can bring additional food and/or beverages for no extra charge. If you purchased the BASIC party package you can bring food and beverages for a $50 fee. Adult beverages are prohibited.

Who Needs Waivers And How Do We Sign?

All jumpers AND observers need a signed waiver. Electronic waivers are active for 1 year. If under age 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Waivers can be completed online before your party at https://defy.com/waiver/

Can I Sign A Waiver At The Park?

Yes. It is ideal to do it online ahead of time at https://defy.com/waiver/ but it can be done at the park. If under age 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Do You Offer Customizations, Add-ons Or Upgrades To Parties?

Yes. You can select a pre-set party package, add-on additional items, or fully customize your party package with our Event Coordinator to accommodate your needs.

Can I Get Extra Jump Time?

Yes. If your party is on a weekday, you can add 30 minutes of jump time for $5 per jumper or 60 minutes of jump time for $9 per jumper to any of our party packages. This must be arranged through your Event Coordinator prior to your party.

Is There A Birthday Party Discount For Flight Club Members?

Yes! Our Elite Flight Club members enjoy a discount on regular priced birthday parties. Contact your Event Coordinator for details and ask how to apply your Flight Club membership perks.

Do You Provide Invitations?

Yes. You can find these on the party page of the website. On row 6 listing what is included, you will see “Invites – CLICK HERE”, which will take you to an editable e-vite.

What If There Is More Than One Birthday Guest?

We always want to acknowledge guests celebrating their birthday, so please tell your Event Coordinator the names and ages of all those celebrating a birthday at DEFY.

What Is Your Cancellation Policy?

There is a 72-hour grace period after the time of booking where the $75 deposit may be refunded. After this 72-hour period, the deposit is non-refundable. Parties may be rescheduled at any time before or after the 72-hour window, but the deposit will not be refunded for parties cancelled after the window has passed. Events booked within 72 hours of the date of their event will not receive a refund.

Is A Deposit Required To Make A Birthday Reservation?

A $75 deposit is required at the time of booking, online or over the phone with our Event Coordinator. The deposit is applied to the total price of your birthday party package.

When Do I Pay The Rest Of My Balance?

During check-in the day of your event

Where to celebrate "The Tortured Poets Department" in Philly, Record Store Day 2024, Bad Bunny this weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you think you're coming down with something that isn't allergy-related but is leaving you looking out the window for long periods and wishing to be outside, chances are you've got spring fever. 

The city of Philadelphia has officially thawed out from its winter frost and now people are opting to spend some more time outdoors to take in the smell of fresh-cut grass and feel the sun on their face. 

This weekend you can get outside and hit the Rothman Orthopaedics Roller Rink at Dillworth Park, Parks on Tap at Azalea Garden, hit the ballpark for a game at CBP and hop on the largest swing in North America! 

Businesses around the city are also celebrating Taylor Swift's latest album "The Tortured Poets Department" with festive events and Record Store Day 2024. Let's dive in!

Bad Bunny's "Most Wanted Tour" at Wells Fargo Center

Bad Bunny's "Most Wanted Tour" concert at the Wells Fargo Center was in danger of being moved to Thursday, but with the Sixers beating the Miami Heat in Wednesday's NBA Play-In Tournament, the show will go on!

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Wells Fargo Center. Warning, these tickets will cost you a bit. Prices start at $205.

Record Store Day 2024: The Philadelphian's guide

The annual celebration of independent record stores is this Saturday and the Philadelphia area has plenty of shops celebrating with special releases, in-store performances, food trucks and other festivities.

Pearl Jam has a new album out, which includes a Record Store Day release as well as a limited edition Philadelphia variant of their 12th studio album "Dark Matter."  The Philly variant went on sale Friday, but the RSD release will be available Saturday.

Taylor Swift has a new double album out, "The Tortured Poets Department," and while there are no RSD-specific editions, Swifties can shop local and support their neighborhood record store by picking up the Berks County's latest record.

CBS Philadelphia has the Philadelphian's guide to Record Store Day - Repo Records on South Street opens at 9 a.m. and will have a food truck; Young Ones in Berks County is opening early at 8 a.m. and has a lineup of in-store performances too.

Philly celebrates Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department"

Berks County's finest Taylor Swift dropped a surprise double album "The Tortured Poets Department" at midnight Friday, and the Philadelphia area has several events to celebrate the pop star's latest release.

Manayunk will be very Swiftie focused but there is plenty of fun to be had for all the tortured poets in the Delaware Valley.

Taqueria Amor  on Manayunk's Main Street is serving special Swift-themed cocktails inspired by the tracklist of the latest album, such as "Guilty as Gin?" and "Down Bad #87" through April 28.

Bark Social in Manayunk is also hosting a  free all-day album drop party  on Friday with special cocktails and costume prizes every hour. ( Learn more about Bark Social .)

Rothman Orthopaedics Roller Rink 

Ready to roll? It's time to lace up those skates and get outside! The Rothman Orthopaedics Roller Rink  opened for the season Friday in Dilworth Park. 

The roller rink is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Sunday to Thursday and then 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $8 for kids 10 years old and under and $10 for adults. 

Group skate session rates start at $12 a person for over 10 guests. There's also a $5 discount on Monday and Tuesday matinee skate sessions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

No skates? No worries! The Rothman Roller Rink charges $6 per skate rental. You can also bring your own skates and just pay for the price of admission. 

Skate sales may be limited in person so reserve your skate session in advance.  

Phillie Phanatic birthday and a 3-game series with White Sox

The sports fans can head to the ballpark this weekend as the Philadelphia Phillies welcome the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Friday night is another City Connect game, so the Phils will be wearing their new Nike jerseys .

Next week is the Phillie Phanatic's birthday but the Fightins will celebrate Sunday by giving away Phanatic Mittens to kids 14 and under .

Check out North America's largest swing, which is in Philadelphia!

Swing into some fun Saturday morning with the "The Swing into Spring Celebration" at Anna Verna Playground  at FDR Park.

The fun begins at 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and the family-friendly event is complete with a free concert, free water ice and giveaways for kids. CBS Philadelphia's Jan Carabeo checked out the swing Friday.

One feature at the playground is an enormous swing with 20 seats - it's the largest set in North America.

Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival 

You'll want to come hungry to this year's Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival this Sunday. This foodie paradise starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. and includes dozens on dozens of food trucks ranging in flavors from BBQ to seafood to delicious desserts.

The event will also have two stages of live music throughout the afternoon for visitors to do their yummy food dance to! 

Visitors can also shop from local boutiques all down Main Street in Manayunk. 

Take in the Cherry Blossoms

While peak bloom for the cherry blossom trees in Philadelphia may have passed, plenty of beautiful trees are still waiting to be appreciated throughout Philadelphia.

Parks on Tap

The smell of springtime is in the air and it's time to get outside and soak it all in. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and FCM Hospitality have coined the perfect way to get people outside with its  Parks on Tap  event. series. The annual outdoor tradition is back for another year bringing Philadelphians and visitors together to take in the city's parks while enjoying food, drinks, the outdoors and each other. 

The traveling beer garden changes locations each week  but the destination chosen to kick off the springtime season is the one and only, Azalea Garden. Parks on Tap is available at Azalea Garden from 4 to 10 p.m. now until Sunday.
