Belize Lamanai Tours Customer Reviews

After a fantastic 2 hour boat ride we arrived at Lamanai. I was impressed by the beautiful Pyramid. I went up to the top but it is not for the faint of heart. I had problems coming down. Thank God for the rope that I held on to so hard, my hands were hurting. The jungle trees were full of swinging black Howler monkeys above our heads. My daughter and I had a fantastic day. Would recommend it to anyone that can walk.

Getting to walk all around Lamanai was truly a phenomenal experience. To get that close to the ruins was surreal, and to climb up the high temple was unlike anything I have ever experienced while traveling the world. Our tour guide was top notch, extremely knowledgeable, interactive, funny and kind. He even had a friend who is a true Mayan who came to talk to us . That was beyond our expectations. While walking, we saw so much and even encountered some unique wildlife along the way. You must wear sneakers/comfortable sturdy shoes. There is a lot of walking into the jungle to even reach the ruins, and much more all around. It is a lot of exercise so make sure you are up for that. Please also do NOT forget the bug spray, as heavy duty as possible is absolutely required. You are in the jungle, so you need something very good. I had some incredibly powerful products, plus deet 100 and still managed to get attacked by thousands of fire ants- both feet/ankles/legs. Believe me when I say it was excruciating. I was also wearing capris so I’d suggest long pants despite the heat. It is an experience I will never forget and I had the battle wounds for months before they fully healed. Regardless of that it was an experience unlike anything else, and one I will always be thankful for. When you are standing their among the ruins, it is something else. Not easily explained. I would highly recommend this , even if you do nothing else. This is important and unique. An in dept education that will blow your mind. Don’t forget your camera- you never know what else you might find !

We took a bus from Belize City and then a boat ride along the New River to Lamanai. The boat ride was quite exciting. We saw some local people fishing in the river. Lamanai is pretty well preserved (in my opinion). We climbed up to the top of the high temple. The view was great. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his lectures about Lamanai. It was quit hot when we were there. We didn’t bring enough water with us, so I would suggest to bring enough water to keep you hydrated.

Incredible experience traveling through the city of Belize and country side by bus. Our guide (Adrian) were very knowledgeable of the history, culture and political landscape. The van tour is about 1 hour long and then another 45 minutes traveling by river boat to the Mayan ruins. Touring the ruins was very educational and the natural wildlife in the jungle just cam alive with all of the amazing sounds and plant life. Definitely would recommend this tour to anyone considering it!

Picked us up from hotel, then took jungle boat ride to ruins. Lots of wildlife on boat ride, including iguanas, birds, bats, and monkeys. To see crocodiles, make sure to book when river is lower during dry season. Ruins were amazing! Colin was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable, highly respectful, and passionate about the history and culture of this place. He was able to answer all questions from those on our tour, was friendly, and had a great and appropriate sense of humor (not over the top). Lunch was included and excellent.

About this tour

Unveiling the splendor of this ancient maya civilization with our lamanai tours, lamanai tour overview.

Discover Ancient Maya Wonders: Unforgettable Lamanai Tour!

Embark on an extraordinary journey through time and nature as you explore the enigmatic ruins of Lamanai, one of Belize’s most captivating archaeological sites nestled deep within the lush New River Lagoon’s verdant jungle embrace, where towering pyramids and intricately carved stone masks stand as silent sentinels to a civilization lost to the mists of history yet still whispering tales of grandeur and mystery to those who venture into this ancient realm.

Your adventure begins with a thrilling boat ride along the sinuous New River, its tranquil waters teeming with diverse wildlife from playful spider monkeys swinging through overhanging branches to majestic jabiru storks standing sentinel-like amid the reeds, as your experienced guide regales you with fascinating facts about the flora and fauna that call this vibrant ecosystem home.

As you glide through the serpentine waterways, keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of elusive crocodiles basking on sun-drenched banks, their prehistoric forms a reminder of the timeless nature of this untamed wilderness that has remained largely unchanged since the days when Maya traders plied these very waters in dugout canoes laden with precious cargoes of jade, obsidian, and cacao.

Upon reaching the archaeological site, prepare to be awestruck by the magnificent Mask Temple, its weathered stone face still exuding an air of ancient power, the imposing High Temple offering panoramic views of the surrounding jungle canopy, and the hauntingly beautiful Jaguar Temple, each structure a testament to the architectural prowess and spiritual beliefs of the Maya who once thrived in this remote corner of the world.

As you traverse the sprawling complex, keep your ears attuned to the ethereal howls of troops of howler monkeys echoing through the forest, their primal calls transporting you back to a time when Lamanai stood as a beacon of Maya civilization, its influence spanning over 3,000 years of continuous occupation and leaving an indelible mark on the landscape that continues to captivate and inspire visitors from across the globe. Your knowledgeable guide will unravel the secrets of the site, sharing insights into the daily lives of the ancient inhabitants, their complex cosmology, and the intricate hieroglyphic inscriptions that adorn many of the structures, offering tantalizing glimpses into a world both familiar and utterly alien to our modern sensibilities.

As you ascend the steep steps of the High Temple, feel the weight of history beneath your feet and marvel at the engineering feat that allowed the Maya to construct such monumental edifices without the aid of metal tools or the wheel, their hands and minds guided by a deep understanding of mathematics, astronomy, and the rhythms of the natural world.

From the temple’s lofty summit, gaze out over the vast expanse of emerald jungle stretching to the horizon, punctuated by the silvery ribbon of the New River, and imagine the bustling city that once sprawled before you, its streets and plazas alive with the vibrant tapestry of Maya life, from merchants hawking their wares to priests conducting elaborate ceremonies to ensure the favor of the capricious gods who held sway over every aspect of existence in this ancient world.

Descending from the heights, explore the nooks and crannies of the site, where every weathered stone holds the potential to reveal new insights into the lives of those who came before, from humble potsherds that speak of daily rituals to exquisitely crafted jade ornaments that once adorned the most elite members of society.

As the day progresses, take time to reflect on the enduring legacy of the Maya, whose achievements in art, architecture, astronomy, and mathematics continue to astound and inspire us millennia after their cities fell silent, their knowledge and traditions carried forward by their descendants who still inhabit the lands of their ancestors, keeping alive the flickering flame of an ancient wisdom that has much to teach our modern world about living in harmony with the natural environment and the cyclical nature of time itself.

As your tour draws to a close, savor a traditional Belizean lunch amidst the timeless beauty of Lamanai, the flavors of local cuisine mingling with the heady scent of tropical flowers and the distant calls of toucans and parrots, creating a sensory tapestry that will linger in your memory long after you’ve returned to the bustle of modern life.

With hearts full of wonder and minds expanded by the day’s experiences, board your boat for the return journey, the setting sun casting a golden glow over the lagoon and bathing the jungle in an ethereal light that seems to blur the boundaries between past and present, reality and dream, leaving you with a profound sense of connection to the timeless rhythms of nature and the enduring spirit of human creativity and resilience that finds its ultimate expression in the magnificent ruins of Lamanai.

Best Lamanai Belize Tours & What to Expect

Secluded in lush jungle along the New River, Lamanai is my favorite archeological site in Belize, partly due to the scenic boat journey you take to get here.

The Maya ruins themselves are striking and well preserved, with several temples you can still climb by foot. Yet Lamanai is one of the lesser known Mayan sites in Belize.

When I visited with my family we nearly had the place to ourselves. However, Lamanai also happens to be favorite spot for cruise ship excursions, so it can get a little more crowded depending on the day.

If you want to visit this breathtaking historical site and are hoping to compare the best tours, you’ve come to the right place. I’ll share the best Lamanai Belize tours, plus some important information to know before you go.

🥾 Cave Adventures : Cave tubing is an adventure unique to Belize, and many people come all the way here to experience the ATM Cave , where you can witness human remains and Mayan artifacts.

🚙 Explore the Hummingbird Highway : This breathtaking lush scenic drive connects the Cayo District and the Caribbean coast. Stop along the way at waterfalls, a cenote, a chocolate workshop, caves, and more! My guide to the Hummingbird Highway .

Visiting the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve

Lamanai is one of the largest Mayan sites in Belize and one of Latin America’s longest continually inhabited cities. It has a rich history and was occupied for over 2,500 years, from the Classic period until the 1700s.

At its height, the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai was home to around 35,000 people. The ancient city’s name Lamanai was first recorded in the 1500s by Spanish missionaries and means “submerged crocodile” in the local Mayan language.

As of 2024, Lamanai is home to some of the few Mayan temples you can still climb by foot. From the top of Jaguar Temple, you can gaze out on the dense jungle while standing in the same spot where Mayan priests and rulers stood thousands of years ago.

After climbing the temple, you can walk through the remnants of the ancient city of Lamanai and discover more structures and temples uncovered by archaeologists, visit Lamanai’s archaeological museum, spot howler and spider monkeys, and eat lunch by the idyllic New River Lagoon.

Best Lamanai Belize Tours

1. best lamanai temple tour from belize city.

★★★★★ 5/5 stars

This highly rated day trip includes roundtrip transportation from Belize City (with AC), a scenic boat ride along the New River, and a tour of Lamanai with a licensed professional guide.

You’ll also get to enjoy a delicious Belizean lunch beside the New River, and spot a diversity of wildlife.

This is the perfect tour for individuals and groups staying in Belize City. If you’re staying on the islands, be sure to arrange transport to Belize City for the tour.

“Lamanai was an incredible experience! From the river boat ride, to seeing the ruins, to eating a delicious lunch – it was an overall great day! Ignacio Jr. and Ignacio Sr. were both very kind and informative. My husband and I learned so much and had a blast!” Review from Raley on Viator.com

2. Lamanai Tour From San Ignacio

While San Ignacio is considered the adventure capital of Belize, an adventure-focused Belize itinerary would not be complete without a visit to Lamanai! Thankfully, there is a guided tour to Lamanai from San Ignacio.

This Lamanai San Ignacio small group tour includes roundtrip transport from San Ignacio, a cruise along the beautiful New River, and a tour of the site. A delicious lunch is included as well. After eating lunch, you’ll get some free time to explore the ruins or Lamanai museum on your own. And you might even see a howler monkey along the way!

3. Best Lamanai Tour With Ferry & Cruise Pickup

If you’re coming from Caye Caulker, San Pedro, another island, or from a cruise, this Lamanai tour is your best option! It includes pickup at the San Pedro Express Water Taxi Terminal, Belize City Cruise Port, and even the airport!

Another perk of this tour is the guides—especially Brenda, a Mayan tour guide who tourgoers always love. In the words of a traveler on Vaitor : “ The best part of our trip was our guide, Brenda! She grew up in Lamanai so she brought her own knowledge and pride to the tour… it was her ties to Lamanai that made our day so special!! “

Like with other Lamanai Belize tours, this one includes a scenic river cruise down the beautiful New River, a guided exploration of the Mayan temples and Lamanai ruins, and a delicious lunch.

“Fantastic tour to Lamanai. Led by a small team with knowledgeable and friendly guides to a great site. Driver picked us up at Belize city water taxi dock to accommodate our travel plans. Even lunch was delicious and far exceeded what’s typical on similar tours.” Review from David on Viator.com

4. Lamanai Tour from Orange Walk

Don’t need transport from Belize City? You can also join a Lamanai tour in Orange Walk, the closest major town to Lamanai. Most tours include a boat ride down the New River and a tour of Lamanai with a knowledgeable guide. Just keep in mind that none of the local companies have online booking, so you will need to call to reserve your spot. Contact Lamanai Belize Tours via WhatsApp: +011-501-630-5170.

Boat tour to Lamanai along Belize’s New River.

What to Expect on a Cruise Down the New River

The boat ride down Belize’s New River is one of the best parts of touring Lamanai.

During the one-hour cruise, your guide will help you spot colorful birds and other wildlife and identify tropical plants along the river’s shore. If you’re lucky, you might spot a crocodile sunbathing.

You’ll pass by Shipyard, a traditional Mennonite community. During my tour, we met Mennonite families floating in small boats along the river near Shipyard. As you near Lamanai, the river will open into the New River Lagoon.

What to Expect When Visiting Lamanai

Visiting Lamanai is a really special experience. Since you arrive by boat, it almost feels like you’re on an island (but you’re not). And the panoramic view from the top of the temples makes it what I consider the most beautiful archeological site in Belize.

The archaeological site is rather expansive, and not all of Lamanai has been excavated. Expect a bit of walking and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. There are several temples you can climb, too!

There is a decent amount of protection from the sun thanks to the jungle, but there are parts of Lamanai you may want to explore where you will be exposed. Consider bringing a hat and a sun shirt.

When I visited Lamanai, I was eaten alive by mosquitos, so if you are sensitive to them, definitely come prepared with bug spray and itch relief balm . You could also wear airy long pants and a long sun shirt for extra protection.

One other thing to know beforehand is that you will probably encounter howler monkey—and the noise they make is haunting but difficult to describe.

Jaguar Temple Lamanai Belize

Sights to see at Lamanai

1. jaguar temple.

Lamanai’s Jaguar Temple is a 97-foot tall temple decorated with structures resembling the face of a jaguar. You can climb to the top of Jaguar Temple and gaze out over the lush jungle.

Lamanai Belize

2. High Temple

The High Temple is a 109-foot tall temple that likely dates back to the 5th century CE. As of 2023, you can no longer climb to the top of High Temple, but you can climb up Jaguar Temple.

High Temple, Lamanai

3. Mask Temple

Mask Temple is another interesting Mayan temple at Lamanai. The temple’s base is adorned with several faces, including the face of a man who wears a crocodile mask.

Mask Temple, Lamanai, Belize

4. Mayan Ballcourts

In front of the High Temple, you can visit a Mayan ball court. This ball court is significant because underneath the structure archaeologists discovered a vessel filled with liquid mercury and jewels.

5. Howler Monkeys

Lamanai has a population of rowdy howler monkeys that you can observe throughout your visit. They are most likely found perched up in the jungle canopy, so you might hear them before you see them!

6. Lamanai Archaeological Museum

Lamanai has a small museum with several artifacts from Lamanai. With access to Lamanai via a tour, you can visit the museum for free.

Lamanai Packing List

🐛 Bug spray : You’ll likely encounter many mosquitos and other bugs while walking through the jungle at Lamanai. Bring some bug spray to avoid being bit.

🐞 Bug itch relief cream : Even after applying bug spray, I still got several itchy bites at Lamanai. Bring an itch relief cream if you tend to be bit by bugs (like me). I always carry this organic itch relief balm with me when traveling.

☀️ Sunscreen : Bring sunscreen, of course. If you also plan to swim in the ocean in Belize, I recommend bringing reef-safe sunscreen .

🕶 Sunglasses : My favorite cute, quality, affordable sunglasses are SOJOS sunglasses .

🧢 Hat : Protect your face (and eyes) from the strong Belizean sun with a good sunhat while exploring Lamanai.

🍎 Snacks : Even if your tour includes lunch, it’s good to bring snacks. I always bring Larabars to snack on in the airport and on tours when I travel.

💦 Water : There is no drinking water available at Lamanai, so I recommend bringing plenty of water with you.

Lamanai Belize FAQs

Is lamanai worth visiting.

Lamanai is one of the most significant places in Belize for Mayan history, and a wonderful area to spot wild animals— hello howler monkeys ! Although it’s difficult to access by road, a river cruise to Lamanai is a delightful way to immerse in nature and see a completely different side of Belize. If you’re interested in learning about the Maya world and encountering wildlife, Lamanai is definitely worth a visit.

The Lamanai Archeological Reserve is a Mesoamerican archeological site that is partially excavated with several large temples still standing. As you walk through the rugged jungle and climb ancient pyramids, you get a glimpse into Belize’s Mayan past.

Where is Lamanai?

Lamanai is located in the northern part of Belize, in Central America. The Lamanai Mayan ruins are along the western shore of the New River Lagoon, which is in the Orange Walk District of Belize. Lamanai is two hours away from Belize City (but challenging to reach by car), one hour from Orange Walk town, and just over two hours from the Belize/Mexico border crossing at Chetumal. Regardless of where you stay, I recommend reserving some time in your Belize itinerary for a boat tour to Lamanai.

How do you get to Lamanai?

You can drive to Lamanai, but it’s not recommended because of the unpaved roads. The roads are rough, bumpy, and unsuitable for a regular rental car. For a more comfortable (and scenic) trip to Lamanai, take a boat tour to Lamanai along the New River.

When I visited Lamanai, I went with some family members who live in Belize. They’d driven to Lamanai in the past and didn’t want to do it again. So we opted for a tour that took us along the river directly to the Lamanai archaeological site. Boat tours are more expensive than driving, but you can see birds and other wildlife along the way.

Getting Around Mainland Belize

🚙 Renting a Car : The best way to experience all (mainland) Belize has to offer is to rent a car! Just keep in mind that some roads are not in the best shape and you should never drive for the first time after dark (learn the potholes in the light first!) You can  compare rental prices from various rental companies here , but I usually end up renting from locally-owned Crystal Auto Rental when I’m in Belize.

🚕 Private Shuttles (and Tours) : If you prefer not to drive in Belize, you can easily get around by booking a private shuttle from the airport , and then going on guided tours for all your jungle adventures. This shuttle is also the best option for folks flying into Belize airport and then going directly the islands!

🚍 Public Busses : Riding the local chicken bus is a popular way to get around Belize for backpackers and budget travelers, but I wouldn’t recommend it to most people as the busses are hot, crowded, slow, and unreliable. Spend the extra money for a private shuttle (or car rental) so you can get your destination more quickly and maximize your time in beautiful Belize.

Best Things to do in Belize

🌲 Explore Mountain Pine Ridge : Perhaps the most underrated area of Belize, Mountain Pine Ridge is full of beautiful waterfalls and fun swimming holes, plus the most striking cave I’ve ever seen! You will need a vehicle with 4WD here, but this day trip from San Ignacio is also an option !

🏺 Discover Ancient Ruins : There are far more Mayan ruins here than you could ever expect. I recommend a  day trip Tikal  (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in nearby Guatemala, a  river cruise to Lamanai  in Northern Belize, and/or a visit to  Xunantunich  near San Ignacio.

👙 Experience ATM Cave or go cave tubing : Dare to explore the famous ATM cave system, where you’ll swim upstream until you find rooms with hundreds of Mayan artifacts and human remains.  Book your ATM tour here ahead of time (they sell out!) Or, go on a more relaxing cave experience, cave tubing !

🚙 Drive the Hummingbird Highway : Belize’s most scenic drive connects the Cayo District to the Caribbean coastline. Chase waterfalls, swim in a cenote, indulge in local chocolate, go caving, and taste Belize’s famous hot sauce along the way.  My guide to the Hummingbird Highway .

🦈 Coral Reef Snorkeling & Diving : Whether you stay in Caye Caulker, San Pedro, or Hopkins, be sure to  book a guided snorkeling or diving experience  on Belize’s gorgeous barrier reef!

My Favorite Places to Stay in Belize

🤿 Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort in Hopkins :  The best place I’ve stayed in Belize! Hamanasi is located in Hopkins, which is said to be the friendliest place in Belize. The town is full of Caribbean charm, and the resort itself is incredible with next-level service, a gorgeous oceanfront property, and wonderful guided day trips to both the jungle and islands. Read my review of Hamanasi .

🌺 Weezie’s in Caye Caulker : My favorite hotel on the vibrant island of Caye Caulker. Weezie’s has a beautiful property on a quieter part of the island, but it is still very close to all of Caye Caulker’s restaurants. Check Weezie’s nightly prices .

🚠 Gaia Riverlodge in Mountain Pine Ridge : The most breathtaking (and peaceful) hotel I’ve ever seen! Gaia is situated on a cliff overlooking the river and mountains in Mountain Pine Ridge, with an excellent onsite restaurant, and a tranquil area by the waterfalls below to relax. Check Gaia Riverlodge nightly prices .

A Mayan City like no other in Belize, it’s unique design and structure makes it one of the largest Mayan cities in the region. Occupying 950 acres of land, Lamanai consists of over 100 minor structures, a ball court and 12 major buildings. The most notable buildings are the Mask Temple, the Jaguar Temple and the High Temple who’s peak rises well above the forest’s canopy providing a bird’s eye view of everything around it including the New River Lagoon.

The Jungle-River tour is just an amazing experience, and is done on your way to Lamanai. So before you start the archaeological tour you will get to experience this safari excursion along the New River. The boat captain along with your guide will make several stops along the river banks to observe crocodiles, various types of birds, some impressive species of plants. ?

Lamanai is one of the largest Mayan sites in Belize, and one of the most interesting. This eco-adventure Belize excursion will surely bring out the Indiana Jones in you.

After tendering to the pier, you will be met by a representative and escorted to the office for check in. Your Belize excursion begins as you drive to Tower Hill, near the town of Orange Walk, approximately one hour from Belize City.

Board the motorized riverboat for your scenic 26-mile (one-hour) high-speed boat ride up the New River through the Belize rainforest. As you travel through miles of river fauna, you will view majestic trees with overhanging air plants and colorful orchids. The boat has limited shade from a Bimini Top, so hats with straps or scarves are recommended for guests extra-sensitive to the sun. On your Belize tour, the upriver ride is also a wonderful opportunity for wildlife spotting. Along the way, see crocodiles, turtles, hawks, kites and falcons, as well as rare and unusual bird sightings such as the "Jesus Christ" bird that can walk on water.

Where the New River becomes a lagoon, you will begin to see the ruins rise into view on the western bluff. Lamanai means "submerged crocodile," a name befitting a city watching all that passes from the edge of a lagoon. Several thatched buildings near the water serve as the gateway to a site where more than 700 buildings have already been identified across its 950 acres. Many of the structures are still buried, some with massive trees and vines growing from them.

Lamanai was occupied continuously for more than 3,000 years, from around 1500 B.C., to at least 1,650 A.D., well beyond most other Mayan sites. It also features the second-largest Pre-Classic structure in the Mayan world.

Although hundreds of ruins remain unexcavated in the nearby jungle, three of the most impressive temples will be visited, including the Jaguar Temple, named for its jaguar decoration; the Mask Temple, home to a 13-foot stone mask of a Mayan king; and the High Temple, which offers a panoramic view from its summit for those wishing to climb.

Setting out with your guide, you will follow well-kept paths though the ancient jungle filled with monuments and temples. As you make your way through the jungle you will hear the chatter of the birdlife and the call of the howler monkeys.

During your visit to the site, you will have a local lunch of authentic Belize specialties, which might include stewed chicken, rice and beans, salad, papaya and fried plantains. Your return to Belize will be via the same route.

Please Note: Due to your cruise line's time in port, and the time required for transportation to and from the site, you will see the highlights of the Lamanai site, but it will not be an all-inclusive in-depth exploration.
