Planning on a one-day Hallstatt itinerary? Located in Upper Austria, Hallstatt is a picture-perfect lakeside village with magnificent views and dubbed the “most beautiful lake town in the world”.

This Austria gem of quaint European town is no longer hidden away in the Salzkammergut region, thanks to the iconic scenery photo you see on the postcard. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hallstatt is widely considered one of the most beautiful places to visit in Austria.

One day trip to Hallstatt can be a very wonderful experience, but be sure to read our travel guide before you go. Hallstatt used to be an idyllic charming town, but it is getting over-tourism with millions of visitors from all around the world.

Our visit to Hallstatt is still one of the most memorable journeys on our Central Europe trip . See how we avoid the crowd when we visited this fairy tale Austrian village. How To Get To Hallstatt

Getting to Hallstatt is simple but also can be complicated depending on your departure location, money, and time concern.

Cheap public transportation makes it easy to travel from Salzburg, Vienna, and Cesky Krumlov to Hallstatt. However, both buses and trains required at least a one-time change unless self-driving.

The best part of taking the train is your traveling journey will be ended with the ferry ride across the Hallstätter See from the Hallstatt train station to Hallstatt Markt. This is the prime and best moment to snap your photo.

From Salzburg To Hallstatt

Salzburg is the most ideal place to plan a one-day itinerary in Hallstatt . It is the closest place to reach Hallstatt by bus or train from ÖBB and Westbahn. Getting to Hallstatt by bus is cheaper but taking the train might be a better option.

By Car : Easiest and most convenient option if you are on a road trip in Austria. Compare your car rental price at Rentalcars.com , the lowest price guarantee and reliable customer reputation. If you are driving, please note that visitors do not have access to the historic center of Hallstatt and are required to park at the desired car park. There are three parking areas within easy walking distance but limited.

By Bus : Board bus #150 from Salzburg bus station, Südtiroler Platz to Bad Ischl Bahnhof with 1.5 hours bus ride. After that, proceed to Hallstatt Gosaumühle via bus #542 and lastly board bus #543 to Hallstatt Lahn. Approximate 3 hours with a total fare of €14.6.

By Train : Transfer at Attnang-Puchheim is required before heading to Hallstatt. From Salzburg hbf to Attnang-Puchheim by Westbahn or ÖBB, and transfer to ÖBB train at Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt station. Total fare of €29.6 + €3 of 15 minutes of ferry ride from Hallstatt station to Hallstatt Markt. The ferry time will correspond with train arrival at Hallstatt station.

From Vienna To Hallstatt

By Train : Westbahn and ÖBB operated from Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim and then board for ÖBB train to Hallstatt station. The direct train departs from Wien Hbf to Hallstatt station every weekend, which takes about 3 hours journey.

From Cesky Krumlov To Hallstatt

No public transport is operated from Cesky Krumlov to Hallstatt directly. You can choose to stay in Salzburg or Vienna before heading to Hallstatt by bus or train. Another option is getting to Hallstatt from CK by shuttle service.

By Shuttle : Private companies like CK Shuttle and Beam Shuttle run between, Prague, Vienna, Cesky Krumlov, and Hallstatt with several departure times per day with prices starting from 800 CZK ($35).

A Perfect Hallstatt Itinerary

A perfect Hallstatt itinerary starts in the early morning. The morning at Hallstatt is magnificent. Wake up early and explore Hallstatt before the town gets overrun by tourists. Tour the salt mines and visit Skywalk in the afternoon. Return to town in the late afternoon.

There are so many things to do for a one-day itinerary in Hallstatt. All the hidden beauty is awaiting you to slowly explore and discover. Most day-trippers arrive at Hallstatt around 11 a.m to 4 p.m. If possible, avoid these peak hours and explore Hallstatt in the morning or late afternoon. We arrived at Hallstatt after spending our perfect day in Cesky Krumlov by shuttle service after 3 hours of road journey.

After checking in to Gasthof Simony , our one-night stay hotel at Hallstatt, We choose to take the funicular and ride up to salt mines and Welterbeblick Skywalk. The charming town is awaiting us to explore in the early morning before the tourists come in. We also spend time strolling around and going upper and outside of the Hallstatt for the best photo shooting.

A few hours of the brief visit is not enough. Of course, you have the choice of just spending several hours, taking a look or photo at this quaint European town and leaving. But Hallstatt is worth an overnight or maybe longer stay to discover this charming village.

The first come across a top thing to do at Hallstatt is to take a postcard-perfect photo of this Austria lakeside village. There are two locations for taking the postcard-perfect photo of Hallstatt, both located at the corner end of the village in the north and south. The ideal walking guide of Hallstatt is started from the north to the south end. Anyway, Hallstatt is a relatively small village and there is only probably one hour of walking journey from one end to another end.

It started on the north side. Talk a short walk toward the north corner of the town after passing the ferry station. This bending road will take you to the most breathtaking view of Hallstatt, and this is where you can take the first iconic photo you see on a postcard.

From there, walk along the boardwalk and stop by the marketplace, one of the most stunning places at Hallstatt. Viewing the 16th-century Gothic building with a beautiful balcony at the historical center can be enjoyed.

Make your way along the street and stop by any souvenir shops or houses at your own pace. Take a photo of the photogenic flower-decked houses or the lively ducks and swans at the lake.

At the end of the walking journey, you will enter another best viewing point at the south end. This location is where you can take the second postcard-perfect photo of Hallstatt from another angle.

360-degree Panorama View At World Heritage Skywalk

Hallstatt Skywalk observation deck offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the entire Dachstein Salzkammergut region. This 350-meter high platform can be reached by 1 hour of hike or €16 of the funicular ride.

From the south viewpoint, follow the sign and walk down the road until you get to the funicular. You can purchase the funicular ride separately or together with the Salzwelten tour which is worth for visit.

Many peoples are coming to Hallstatt for its picturesque charming village, but they don’t know the best attractions in the area are above the village. Hallstatt Salzwelten is considered some of the oldest salt mines in the world, dating back 7,000 years of history. It is also part of the reason why Hallstatt is recognized by UNESCO.

Be prepared for an enjoyable and educational experience in the darkness. This €34 guided tour will explain the mining process and history of salt mining. There are two wooden slides and a train ride out from the tunnel which adds to the excitement of the tour. Worth a visit.

The salt mines tour is approximately 80 to 90 minutes. But please budget for at least 3 to 4 hours including the return journey of the funicular ride and a visit to Skywalk. Normally the line is extremely long, especially in summer, so please come early or book your ticket in advance if you intend to visit the Hallstatt Salt Mines.

Another best thing to do at Hallstatt is strolling around through the narrow streets and elevated upper level of the town. There is so much to explore at Hallstatt besides the lakeside walk.

Instead, you can also walk out of the village and head to Badestrand, one of the locations with stunning views of Hallstatt. With 10 minute walking journey, you can have a peaceful Hallstatt on your own.

Things Not To Do In Hallstatt

Tourism is booming in this small mountain village of only 750 residents. Over 600,00 people are visiting Hallstatt per year for its stunning architecture and well-maintained landscape. But keep in mind that we are visiting other houses and communities.

That’s why it’s important to show respect.

Things Not To Do in Hallstatt:

• No flying drone
• No trespass on property
• Keep your voice down

No Flying Drone : Drone is prohibited with a brunch of signs sprinkled around Hallstatt. Please be aware that Austria has the strictest laws about drones with very hefty fines. You don’t need this. Just climb up the stairs to the upper Hallstatt or take the funicular up to the Skywalk to get the beautiful panoramic view of Hallstatt.

No Trespass On Property : Show your respect to residents as people are living at Hallstatt. Don’t trespass just for a better photo.

Keep Your Voice Down : Don’t ruin the peaceful and quiet village with your high-pitched voice. Many residents have been put up a sign and hoping for visitors to lower their voices.

Hallstatt Travel Tips

Here are some of the useful Hallstatt travel tips for planning a relaxing holiday:

• Arrive at Hallstatt early.
• Stay for a night in Hallstatt.
• Wake up early.
• Off-season trip.

Arrive at Hallstatt Early if you wish to avoid crowds. Else, consider staying at night at Hallstatt to enjoy this stunning village in the late evening or early morning before the visitors come in.

Stay For A Night at Hallstatt or nearby. Most day-trippers are arrived in the afternoon and will be leaving after spending a few hours at the market square and Seestraße.

Wake Up Early : A few hours in the morning before the arrival of day-trippers is the best time for you to explore the Hallstatt peacefully.

Off-Season Trip : Expect a large crowd and higher prices during the peak season, especially the summer holiday. If possible, avoid peak season so that you can experience the peaceful and calming European village.

Accommodation: Gasthof Simony

We kept debating whether to stay one night in Hallstatt or just a day trip from nearby places such as Salzburg or Bad Ischl. A day trip to Hallstatt is enough for a brief visit to this tiny town. However, you have to stay one night in Hallstatt to fully explore the beauty of the serene town when the day-tripper leaves.

Due to the size of the town, there is very limited accommodation in Hallstatt town. The price is not budget-friendly, especially for those rooms overlooking the lake. Some accommodations even required at least 2 nights’ stay if you choose to stay in Hallstatt.

But glad that we managed to find the Gasthof Simony , a historical wooden building located in the center of Hallstatt with a panoramic view of Lake Hallstatt. A little bit rundown but consider being one of the cheapest accommodation at the center of Hallstatt with superb scenery. Most important, we managed to book a room with a lake view. The view was truly unearthly with Alpine views, especially in the morning. It was truly my best memory in my Hallstatt itinerary. So skip the day trip and go for at least an overnight trip.

Another worth recommendation is Seehotel Gruner Baum . Probably the best lakeside hotel in Hallstatt and served as scenography in many movies. Many celebrities and even Empress Sisi stayed here before. Extremely popular, so please reserve early.

• Where To Stay in Hallstatt: Old Town or Obertraun

Friendly reminder, Hallstatt is a very popular tourist destination. Make sure to reserve your stay in advance if you plan to overnight at Hallstatt. Alternatively, look for accommodations in Obertraun, which is located opposite Hallstatt across the lake at a cheaper price.

What To Eat Hallstatt

Not many choices and limited restaurants mostly located in the market square. Some of the Gasthof also served food but only until lunchtime and mostly not open during Sunday.

Elevated price for food in Hallstatt. If you have the budget, look for the restaurant at the lakeside to enjoy your meal with a great view. Don’t forget to eat fish, Hallstatt’s specialty. Hotel Seewirt Zauner served the best fish dishes in Hallstatt. They proudly serve the local fish which is freshly caught from Hallstatt Lake.

The local Gasthof restaurant like BRÄUGASTHOF and Gasthof Zauner also served traditional local dishes in a nice environment.

Alternatively, look for Maik’s Heisse Hutte , a small cabin located at the Hallstatt Markt that served street food like kebab, hamburgers, and fries at a cheaper price. But don’t expect too much from the food.

We had our lunch in this budget place during our visit to Hallstatt. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel and a beer. The food was not too bad and we enjoyed the food. Couldn’t have asked for more for this price at Hallstatt.

Best Time To Visit Hallstatt

We visited Hallstatt at the beginning of April, not yet the peak season but unfortunately, we also miss the chance to explore the Dachstein Krippenstein’s Giant Ice Cave and Five Finger. I would suggest coming at the end of April or the beginning of May. It should be the best time to visit Hallstatt when everything opens.

There are so many things to do and see at Hallstatt, for sure a few hours for a brief visit with only a one-day itinerary in Hallstatt may not be enough. The charming village, Salzwelten salt mine with Welterbeblick Skywalk, Dachstein Krippenstein with Giant Ice Cave and Five Finger, which easily need to spend at least one or two nights stay at Hallstatt.

Hallstatt Still Worth To Visit?

Last but not least, I hope my little guide can help you plan your perfect one-day Hallstatt itinerary . Seriously, Hallstatt is one of my favorite places during my Europe trip. Despite the large crowd, Hallstatt is very charming. We choose to stay in the lake view front room with slightly expensive but it was worth it. The view is superb breathtaking and unforgettable when you are viewing it barefoot on the room’s balcony. Travel smart and you are actually can escape from the tourist crowds.

After several days exploring Vienna, we set out to explore more of Austria’s beautiful destinations.

Our next stop was Hallstatt, a dreamy lakeside town in the heart of the Salzkammergut district. But even the drive from Vienna to Hallstatt was an adventure itself, filled with one amazing scene after another.

After brief stops at several points in Lower Austria and Wachau Valley, we entered Salzkammergut and began our mountain drive. It was like entering a dreamland – we passed through serene villages with cows grazing contentedly on emerald pastures, which turned into narrow mountain roads overlooking a glistening lake. Less than half an hour in, we caught the first glimpse of our day’s final destination. As we rounded a curve, the trees parted on one side of the road, and there it was, hundreds of meters below us – Hallstatt lying snugly between the imposing mountains and the serene lake.

As the sun set, we finally rolled into our pension. In the next few days, we explored Hallstatt and Salzkammergut, which became one of our most relaxing holidays in Austria.

How to plan your trip to Hallstatt and the Lake District

Here’s an overview of the top things to see and do in Hallstatt and the surrounding Lake District.

I’d recommend spending at least two days in Hallstatt – one full day to explore the historic old town, and at least another day to see various sites in the Lake District. Of course, if you have more days to spare, you could easily spend a week exploring the Salzkammergut region, including the nearby city of Salzburg.

Here are sample itineraries.

If you have 2 days in Hallstatt:

Day 1 – Walk around Hallstatt’s beautiful lakeside town. While it won’t take you more than an hour to walk briskly from one end to the other, you’d want to take your time taking in the photogenic houses, checking out the souvenir shops, and strolling along the lively boardwalk. Make sure to go up the Salzberg mountain and visit the 7,000-year-old salt mine.

Day 2 – Head to Dachstein and visit the Ice Cave and the 5 Fingers Lookout. After lunch, go for a hike around the area – you can choose easy to moderate trails that are 3 to 18 km long.

If you have 5 days in the Lake District:

Spend days 1-2 in Hallstatt as above, then make your way to Salzburg, but not without first enjoying the beautiful towns along the way.

Day 3 – Time for a road trip! See more of the gorgeous Lake District and drive to Mondsee, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Fuschl. Spend an hour or two walking around these charming towns or if you’re visiting in the summer, go for a swim. If you’re continuing your travels to Salzburg, you can use this day to drive from Hallstatt to Salzburg.

Days 4-5 – Explore the beautiful and historic city of Salzburg . Visit Mirabell Palace, follow the life and works of Mozart, and walk along the River Salzach. Spend an afternoon in Hohensalzburg Fortress, Central Europe’s biggest fully-preserved castle, and watch the sunset at Mönchsberg for amazing views of the city.

Top things to do in Hallstatt – a walking itinerary

Put on your comfy shoes – we’re going to explore Hallstatt! Even if you’re not a morning person, you’ll want to get up early for this town. Besides, you can head to bed early as there’s nothing much happening at night. The mornings, though, are absolutely perfect for photo-ops.

(Speaking of photo-ops, if you want the most fantastic holiday photos, book a 2-hour walking tour with a local photographer .)

Start at either end of the town. If your hotel is near the market square, the north end is nearer. If you’re staying outside town along Malerweg, you can start at the south end. I like starting at the north end because I love taking photos of the town early morning. By 9 AM, the town gets pretty crowded, and you’re better off exploring the other attractions.

1. Take a postcard-perfect photo of Hallstatt

Walk to the north, past the ferry station. When the road bends, look back and you’ll see this breathtaking view of Hallstatt.

But Hallstatt is more than just a pretty town. It’s considered the oldest still-inhabited village in Europe, dating back to the Iron Age. In fact, the early Iron Age culture from 800 to 400 BC is known as the Hallstatt culture, an era marked by farming and metal-working, long-range trade with Mediterranean cultures, and the rise of elite classes and social distinction.

Hallstatt – which means “place of salt” – is home to the world’s first salt mine. Thanks to the salt industry, the town quickly progressed and became wealthy. Salt has always been a valuable commodity, especially in prehistoric times when it was primarily used to preserve meat.

In recent decades, though, Hallstatt’s fame derives mostly from its natural beauty. Sandwiched between a lake and mountains (you could even say that it cuddles the lake), this perfect little town easily became a favorite tourist destination as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

2. Walk around the cemetery grounds

Most city tours worldwide include a visit to the cemetery – something I’ve never really appreciated as I’m not a big fan of graves. But the cemetery in Hallstatt is different! It’s actually uplifting (in a weird way) to walk through the cemetery grounds as each grave has its own small flower garden and a view of the lake – a fitting tribute to loved ones.

3. Walk around the market square and visit the little shops along the lake

By now, you’ll see that you don’t actually have to do anything in Hallstatt. Just walking along the boardwalk, looking up at the pastel houses with their charming flowerboxes, and peeking into the souvenir shops is a great way to spend the day. It’s even better if you do this while the rest of the town is still asleep – so aim to be up and about by 7 AM, at least.

Make your way to the market square and weave in and out of the streets. Remember that Hallstatt is really small (just under 1 KM from end to end), so there’s no need to rush through. Take your time and enjoy!

4. Take photos of the lake’s ducks and swans

As if the calm blue lake and mountain ranges reflecting on it are not enough, Lake Hallstatt has to be inhabited by these gorgeous, photogenic creatures. I think they’re all vying for Instagram fame, as they’ll pretty much pose for you.

5. Stop for an early lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants

Along Hallstatt’s boardwalk, you’ll find several restaurants serving delicious meals that come with an amazing view. During peak season, though, it may be challenging to get a nice table (or any table), so try to nab a seat before the lunchtime rush hour or make a reservation.

Some restaurants to try: Im Kainz , Seewirt Zauner , and Couisine .

6. Continue your stroll along Lake Hallstatt

Almost every flower-decked house along the lake is photogenic. Just remember that these are residences and private properties, so don’t go climbing up someone’s balcony! Always be respectful and keep your voices down, especially if you’re traveling with a lively group.

You can visit the Tourist Information Center further down the road to learn about upcoming events or get brochures of the different establishments around town.

7. Take another postcard-perfect photo from the south end

Just a few steps past the Tourist Information Center, another bend on the road leads to another gorgeous view of the town. You’ll once again see the beautiful pastel houses you just passed by, and if you’re lucky, a swan or two will join your shot.

8. Ride the funicular for amazing views of the lake and surrounding countryside

From the south viewpoint, walk down a road to the left to get to the funicular. You can take a ride up and down the funicular to get to the top of the 1,030-meter tall Salzberg (Salt Mountain). Even if you don’t plan to visit the salt mine, the views from the funicular are well worth the trip.

9. See the view from the Skywalk

Once you’re up on Salzberg, check out the “World heritage” views from the Skywalk. It extends over a sheer drop with the Hallstatt old town directly below. If you fancy a cup of tea with a view, stop by the Rudolfsturm restaurant.

10. Learn about Hallstatt’s “salty” past

Now we come to Hallstatt’s star attraction, which I saved for the last. This 7,000-year-old salt mine tells the story of Hallstatt, with fascinating audio-visual presentations that will take you through the prehistoric era to the present. You’ll also get to wear overalls and slide down wooden slides like a legit miner, so it’s a pretty exciting experience. Find out more about the salt mine and nearby attractions here .

11. Go for a hike

If you still have energy and a couple of hours of daytime to spare, continue walking towards Malerweg and into the forest to the Waldbachstrub waterfalls. It’s an easy-to-moderate hike along well-marked trails and should take about 1-2 hours.

End the day at one of the lakeside restaurants. If you have one more day in Hallstatt, explore the surrounding areas.

Hallstatt shares its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Dachstein. Together, the Hallstatt-Dachstein landscape is deemed “exceptional as a complex of great scientific interest and immense natural power that has played a vital role in human history reflected in the impact of farmer-miners over millennia, in the way mining has transformed the interior of the mountain and through the artists and writers that conveyed its harmony and beauty.” Obviously, the UNESCO reviewers fell in love with these alpine towns as well.

You’ll find more breathtaking views in Dachstein, including the glass-bottom 5 Fingers viewing deck and the Dachstein Ice Cave. It’s also ideal for skiing in the winter and hiking in summer as the mountains are famous for their large glaciers. If you love nature and exploring the outdoors, spend a day away from Hallstatt’s crowds and drive to Mondsee.

Mondsee is a year-round destination, with a beautiful town center and plenty of surrounding hiking and biking trails. During the warm months (July and August), Lake Mondsee is ideal for swimming. You can also do various water sports, like water skiing, sailing, or renting a pedal boat to go around the lake.

Go up to the Schafberg lookout by riding the cogwheel steam train and enjoy breathtaking views of the five lakes that surround the area.

Where to eat and drink – best restaurants in and around Hallstatt

Eating in Hallstatt is so much more special as the meals come with a view. Eat outside when the weather is good.

Don’t forget to eat fish, as this is the town’s specialty. For the best fish dishes, eat at Seewirt Zauner – try their grilled whitefish, which they catch fresh from Lake Hallstatt.

For yummy Austrian desserts like apple strudels and other pastries, visit Cafe Bäckerei Konditorei Maislinger. For ice cream fixes, visit Gelateria Giovanni.

If you don’t mind going for a short 10-minute drive out of Hallstatt, Gasthaus Koppenrast is an amazing restaurant away from the tourist crowds.

Getting there.

Driving to Hallstatt

I highly recommend driving to Hallstatt. You can get a rental car from Vienna  and drive 3 hours to Hallstatt, or get your car from Salzburg , and it’s just a one-hour drive from there. Here’s a  road trip itinerary from Vienna to Salzburg through Hallstatt.

How to get from Vienna to Hallstatt

From Vienna, you can catch a train that goes to Hallstatt via Attnang-Puchheim. Get your train tickets from the main train station (Wien-Hauptbahnhof) or the west train station (Wien-Westbahnhof). The fastest train would take about 3.5 hours.

Once at Hallstatt station (which is actually in Obertraun, across the lake from Hallstatt), you have to ride a ferry (Stefanie) into Hallstatt’s old town. You can get your tickets from the ferry station that’s just beside the train station.

How to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt

From Salzburg, there are two ways to get to Hallstatt.

By bus: Go to the bus terminal outside Salzburg’s main train station (Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof) and look for Bus #150 to Bad Ischl. Once in Bad Ischl, ride a train to Hallstatt, then the ferry to the old town.

By train: From the Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof, ride a train to Attnang-Puchheim, then switch to a train to Hallstatt. Once in Hallstatt station, ride the ferry to the old town.

Join a day tour – If you’re short on time, join a day tour from Vienna or Salzburg . You’ll still get to enjoy the town on a day trip.

Best areas to stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a wildly popular tourist destination, so if you plan to stay at least a night, make sure to reserve your hotels in advance. If you’re booking closer to your stay and find that most Hallstatt hotels are already fully booked, you can also look at accommodations in Obertraun, which is directly opposite Hallstatt across the lake. It’s a much more relaxed destination with the same amazing views and ambiance of the mountains and the lake.

★ Top Pick: For the best experience in Hallstatt, stay at a hotel right by the lake. The best hotel among the lakeside options is Seehotel Grüner Baum . It offers panoramic views of Lake Hallstatt, a historic ambiance, spacious rooms, and excellent staff. If you’re driving, don’t worry that it’s right in the middle of car-free Hallstatt – you can park at the P1 parking area outside town and ride the free shuttle to the hotel.

Other highly-rated hotels in Hallstatt include: Heritage Hotel Hallstatt , Gasthof Pension Hirlatz , and Gasthof Bergfried .

For small groups (3-4 adults), check out W & S Executive Apartments . Note that this and the Gasthof Pension Hirlatz are a few minutes’ scenic walk outside the old town.

Obertraun hotels and holidays rentals

Lying between Prague and Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov is a magnificently restored medieval castle town built on the meanders of the Vltava River. Or, if you want to enjoy that traditional Swiss countryside ambiance, head to Lauterbrunnen and Mürren for easy hiking trails, stunning alpine views, and warm and welcoming chalets.

• Giethoorn, Netherlands

If you’re heading to Amsterdam, take a fun side trip to Giethoorn, a beautiful village with lots of picturesque canals, flower-decked houses, and scenes that look straight out of a painting.

Thanks for tge useful info. If we are arriving by bus (private tour bus) from Vienna do we have to cross by ferry to get to Hallstatt. Appreciate your reply

I recently had the opportunity to visit Hallstatt and it was an absolutely beautiful and charming destination. There are so many things to do in this small mountain town, from exploring the historic center and taking a boat tour on the lake, to hiking in the surrounding mountains and visiting the salt mines. I highly recommend Hallstatt.

Is this time of year too cold or restrictive to enjoy Hallstatt? Our first trip to Austria & planning at least 2 nights in the general vicinity. Not sure if it is best to make Salzburg or Vienna the “home base”. Looking for a cozy, romantic inn/hotel to end our first European visit.

The 5 Fingers Observation Deck atop Krippenstein Mountain lies an easy 20-30 minute walk from the mountain station and offers breathtaking views..

This unique viewing platform extends like fingers over the edge of the cliff. Each finger is equipped with a glass floor for a heart-pounding perspective of the sheer drop beneath you.

It’s a one-of-a-kind spot that offers unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding Alps and the picturesque Hallstatt Lake.

Hallstatt is renowned for its rich history of salt mining, and you can find a variety of unique salt-related souvenirs to take home as mementos of your trip. From gourmet salts infused with herbs and spices to decorative salt lamps, or skincare products made with Hallstatt salt, there is something for every taste and budget.

Renting a boat is a great way to explore the crystal-clear lake and get a different perspective of Hallstatt and the stunning mountain landscape. You will find various boat rental companies along the lake, offering hourly rental.

If you’d rather not be your own captain, then sit back and relax on a boat tour across the Hallstatt Lake. Depending on the season different routes are available.

Guided tour: Joining a guided tour is the best, most comfortable, and quickest way to reach Hallstatt, especially for day trips. These tours typically offer hassle-free transportation from nearby cities like Salzburg or Vienna , allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenic journey without worrying about finding the way or parking.

By car: You can reach Hallstatt by taking the A1 and B166. The center of the village is car-free and parking is available outside the village. From there you’ll need to walk or use shuttle service. 

By bus/train: The most convenient option is to take a bus or train to Bad Ischl and then change to a train to Hallstatt. From Hallstatt train station take the ferry across the lake to reach the village.

When it comes to getting around Hallstatt, the village is easily explored on foot, with most of its attractions within walking distance of each other. However, for excursions to attractions like the ice caves or other nearby sights, public transportation, a car, or organized tours may be necessary.

Gasthof Zauner, with its cozy ambiance and traditional Austrian cuisine, is one of the best restaurants in Hallstatt. Be sure to try local specialties like lake trout and Kaiserschmarrn and follow it with their Apfelstrudel, it’s incredible! 

Another of my favorite restaurants is Braugasthof Lobisser, which offers a special dining experience with its onsite beer garden overlooking the lake. They serve up hearty Austrian dishes such as soups, and roasted meats, and local beer.

The best time to visit Hallstatt is between April and June . During this time, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, and crowds are manageable.

Spring is ideal for sightseeing, exploring the village’s charming streets, enjoying boat rides on Lake Hallstatt, and hiking in the surrounding mountains. Additionally, these months are typically less crowded than the summer months, allowing you to enjoy the charming village in a more peaceful setting.

While it’s possible to see Hallstatt’s main attractions on an action-packed day trip, ideally, you should plan to spend at least 1-2 days in Hallstatt to truly soak up its unique ambiance and explore its hidden gems. 

This will give you plenty of time to wander through the charming center, visit the Hallstatt Salt Mine, take a boat ride on the lake, and enjoy delicious Austrian meals at local restaurants.

With an overnight stay, you can also experience the village during different times of the day, such as early mornings and evenings, when the crowds are fewer and the atmosphere is more peaceful. Not to mention the gorgeous sunrise and sunset in this fairytale-like town!

As someone who has visited Hallstatt numerous times and is always excited to return, I can confidently say that this picturesque village is absolutely worth visiting!

Instagram has introduced me to incredible places and Hallstatt was one of them. I saw pictures of it and knew I had to visit it one day, someday. Mr AW and I finally visited this fairytale village of dreams in January 2018!

However, have you ever wondered the pictures you see on Instagram are too good to be true? Ever felt before going to a very touristy place that you might end up being disappointed, underwhelmed even? As I took the bus from Salzburg to Hallstatt, that was the thought running through my mind. Luckily for me, the stunning Austrian landscape throughout the journey was kind enough to take my mind off this nagging, good-for-nothing thought.

Getting there

I must admit getting to Hallstatt was not straightforward. However, it wasn’t difficult either. A train from Munich (we visited Germany and Austria in 1 week) to Salzburg, followed by a bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, another bus to Gosau and finally the bus to Hallstatt. Now hold on! Before you get completely scared off of travelling to Hallstatt by public transport , that was not my intention. Although it did involve many changes, it wasn’t cumbersome or tiresome. The changes were frequent and the connections were very easy. So, don’t be put off.

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg

By car: Take Road 158 from Salzburg heading east towards Bad Ischl and then Road 145 followed by 166. Hallstatt itself is car-free and there are parking lots just outside the village.

By public transport:

Route 1 : Bus 150 from Salzburg station to Bad Ischl, bus 542 heading to Gosau followed by bus 543.

Route 2 : Bus 150 from Salzburg station to Bad Ischl, train from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt railway station followed by a ferry across the lake to the village.

We took option 1 while going in and option 2 (in reverse order obviously) while leaving. It was almost 3 pm when we reached Hallstatt. As we wheeled our luggage into the little village, we saw most of the tourists walking in the opposite direction ready to leave. And I knew we made the right decision to stay for the night in Hallstatt. Hallstatt is a very popular day trip from Salzburg but I feel one should stay overnight in order to have this pretty village all by oneself before the tourists arrive and after they leave.

Fun fact: Hallstatt is so popular for its beauty that China has created a copy of it and many Chinese tourists now visit Hallstatt to see the real deal. Nice bump to Austrian tourism, no?

Where to stay

Heritage Hotel is a 4* hotel in the heart of Hallstatt consisting of 3 historic, renovated buildings. The main building is right on the lake and the other two are a few minutes walk away, slightly higher up. All the rooms have amazing views of the lake, are comfortable and well-equipped.

Seehotel Grüner Baum is often rated as the top hotel in Hallstatt. With one side of the hotel facing the historic marketplace and the other side facing the lake thus offering panoramic views, you cannot get a more central location than this.

Mr AW and I stayed at the Heritage Hotel . After the nondescript formalities of checking into our hotel, we realised that our luggage needed some more dragging. The building that we got the room in was a 5-minute walk from the main wing taking us away from the main square up the narrow alleys. We weren’t complaining though, as we knew that a room on the third floor of a building perched higher up on the cliff only meant one thing – BREATHTAKING VIEWS!

About Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a picturesque village of stunning views in the Salzkammergut lake district of Austria and is often known as the “Pearl of Austria” . A UNESCO World Heritage Site , Hallstatt is one of the oldest known places of human settlement and is very important due to its production and mining of salt from prehistoric times.

Things to do

The number one thing to do in Hallstatt would simply be exploring the little village on foot . In my opinion, dusk time and early mornings are the best times to go for a little amble through the village. It only took us about a 30-minute walk at a slow pace to cover the length of the main street and be back.

Of course, no walk in Hallstatt is complete without going to the viewpoint for a classic photo of the village.

The image of the Hallstätter See lake flanked by tall, jagged Dachstein mountains rising into the sky, their peaks sprinkled with snow; the traditional Austrian houses jutting out of the cliffs; the Church with its tall steeple right on the edge, at the bend of the lake; the calm reflection of it all visible like a mirage in the lake’s still blue waters is imprinted in my mind. Forever!

Another fabulous place for the photos and views (although won’t sound right) is the cemetery near the Catholic Parish Church .

Marktplatz or Market Square is the main central square and is surrounded by colourful pastel houses, cute shops and cosy cafes.

Hallstatt is home to one of the oldest salt mines in the world and it is open to visitors. Although we did not go, it is possible to take a funicular up the hill and visit the prehistoric salt mines for a tour. Another popular attraction right by the mine is the Skywalk , a viewing platform 360m above Hallstatt offering panoramic views of the Hallstatt lake, the mountains and the village.

Where to Eat

For a simple breakfast or an afternoon break, head to the Maislinger bakery for some coffee and pastries. It’s a local bakery and cafe well known for its bread, desserts and traditional Austrian sweets that you can buy as edible souvenirs.

For a meal, you can’t go wrong with a table by the window with a beautiful view of the lake at the restaurant in Seehotel Grüner Baum . While the locally caught fish is the speciality, for our lunch, Mr AW opted for the traditional chicken schnitzel and I went for the vegetarian pasta with pumpkin sauce and braised cabbage. Sounds unusual but very delicious!

Hallstatt turned out to be as picturesque as I had imagined, if not more. I am sure visiting in summer would have its own charm with blossoming flowers framing the alpine houses and warm, sunny days. However, I am glad that we visited Hallstatt in winter . Not only is it cheaper in the off-peak season but quieter . I really wish I could’ve seen it covered in a thick, heavy blanket of snow, though. Now that would have been magical!

Best Things to Do in Hallstatt

Take a leisurely walk along the waterfront as it’s the perfect starting point to explore the scenic village. You’ll be greeted with rustic gabled houses that cast shimmering reflections onto the glassy waters of the lake, graceful swans, and old wooden boats that add to the charming ambiance. It’s an experience that stands on its own! 

The entire village can be easily explored within 20 minutes on foot, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself pausing every few steps to capture that perfect postcard-perfect shot. And just in case you can’t locate the renowned Hallstatt viewpoint, don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with its exact location included in our map below .

If you want to get out on the water, you can rent a boat or hop on a traditionally crafted wooden salt boat for a themed cruise .

Old Town & Market Square (Marktplatz)

The Market Square is the lively and bustling hub of the village, hosting open-air concerts and cultural events that bring the community together. Its centerpiece is the mighty Holy Trinity statue , towering over the square, while around it, you’ll discover charming cafés and the striking Gothic-style Lutheran Church . 

As you explore the Market Square, you’ll notice a unique feature – colorful stone houses that stand out from the traditional timber buildings that Hallstatt is known for. They were built in the wake of a devastating fire that struck the village in 1750, reducing the majority of the square to ash and rubble and destroying 35 houses at the center.

Follow the labyrinthine alleys that wind upwards from the square, allowing yourself to lose track of direction as you explore the charming nooks and crannies of the village and soak up the breathtaking views below. 

World Heritage Museum (Welterbemuseum)

The Welterbemuseum provides a wealth of information about the area’s rich cultural heritage, including its prehistoric past, the Celtic culture that once thrived here, and the salt mining industry that has been a vital part of the local economy for over 7,000 years ago. The museum’s exhibits feature artifacts such as tools, pottery, jewelry, and other items of cultural significance. 

Directly opposite the museum, under the Janu Sports Shop , you can explore historical excavations that include building foundations, Habsburg residence outer walls, and salt mine forges with metal tools.

Catholic Parish Church (Pfarrkirche) & Ossuary (Beinhaus)

Perched on a terrace overlooking the village, stands the magnificent Pfarrkirche with its remarkable wooden bell tower that pierces the sky. This very church was the scene of a notorious art theft case in the 1980s, when a couple absconded with four priceless Gothic paintings from the small altar, leaving investigators scratching their heads for over three decades. 

In the cemetery adjacent to the church, there is the Beinhaus , an ossuary housing around 1,200 human skulls. It was built to address the space constraints in the graveyard, which necessitated the removal and storage of the deceased’s bones. The skulls were painted with decorative designs, such as oak or ivy leaves for males and floral motifs for females, and sometimes included the deceased’s name, date of death, and cause of death.  

Take in the breathtaking views of the village below, and if you’re up for a hike, follow the Hallstätter Höhenweg . Beginning at the back of the cemetery, the trail leads up to the stunning Marienruhe lookout point before winding its way to the Skywalk Platform.

Skywalk & Salt Mine

Experience the stunning Salzberg Valley, also known as the Hallstatt High Valley, located high above the village. Here you’ll discover the awe-inspiring Skywalk viewing platform and one of the world’s oldest-known Salt Mines.

At the entrance to the Salzberg area stands the medieval defense tower, Rudolfsturm , once the residence of the salt mine manager and now a restaurant. The Skywalk (Welterbeblick or World Heritage View), located just below, offers majestic views 360m above the rooftops of Hallstatt. Step onto the lookout platform and walk 12m out to its tapered point for an exhilarating experience.

Only ten minutes away, the Salt Mine (Salzwelten) can be explored on a 90-minute tour detailing its rich history. Journey down 60m miners’ slides, through mysterious tunnels, and to an underground salt lake for an unforgettable adventure.

To reach the top, you can either opt for the 5-minute funicular railway ride (Salzbergbahn) from the visitor center or take the trail behind the Beinhaus (moderate, 1h).

Admission to the Skywalk platform is free, while the Salt Mine charges €27 for entrance (APR-OCT 09.30-16.00, NOV-JAN 09.30-14.30). If you take the funicular up, expect to pay an extra €22 for a round trip or €12 for a single trip. For the best deal, go for the Combo Ticket. , which costs €40 and covers the Salt Mine and the funicular round trip.

Attractions around Hallstatt

Dachstein caves & 5 fingers.

For a perfect summer day trip, take the cable car from the nearby low-key village of Obertraun and explore the highlights of the Dachstein massif. 

Getting off at its first station you can visit the captivating Dachstein Caves , where you will find yourself in a strange world of ice mountains, glaciers, and frozen waterfalls. The most interesting one is the Rieseneishöhle (Giant Ice Cave), with its formations being illuminated with colored light and taking eerie and surreal shapes. The Mammuthöhle (Mammoth Cave), so-called because of its size rather than after the prehistoric mammal, and the Koppenbrüllerhöhle are also worth visiting. 

At the second station, discover three viewing platforms namely the Welterbespiral, the Weltnaturerbeblick, and the most spectacular of all, the 5Fingers. The latter juts out over a sheer cliff face with five uniquely shaped platforms, providing magnificent views. Test your vertigo with its glass floor allowing you to look straight down into the void.

From Hallstatt Lahn, take Postbus #543 and disembark at the Dachstein Cable Car Valley Station (Dachsteinseilbahn Talstation) after a 25-minute ride. Arriving by car, you can park free of charge at the Valley Station. From there, the cable car departs every 15 minutes and you can take it to the first station for the Dachstein Caves or the second station for the 5Fingers Viewing Platform.

Here are the operating hours and ticket prices for the cable cars and caves.

The three small mountain lakes, known as Gosauseen, lie one after the other, surrounded by forest and limestone rocks. An undemanding walk around the biggest one , the Vorderer Gosausee, will reward you with superb views of the surrounding mountains. If you want to explore the rest, walk past the Gosaulacke (Lacke means puddle), and you will get to Hinterer Gosausee, a small green-blue lake enclosed within a host of stunning grey peaks. 

And for an adrenaline-pumping experience with breathtaking views of the Gosausee, take on the Laserer Klettersteig (via Ferrata) , but be prepared for a challenge.

From Hallstatt Lahn, first take Bus #543 to Gosaumühle (10min) and then change to Bus #542 to Hintertal b.Gosau Gosaukammbahn (24min). Alternatively, you can drive and park at the same location. The trailhead is easy to locate and follow.

Waldbachstrub Wasserfall

The imposing Waldbachstrub Waterfall in Echerntal Valley is Hallstatt’s hidden gem. You can easily get there from the center of the village, following the trail that starts from the P2 parking lot.

The hike takes about 1h 30min, while an extra 30min detour takes you to the marvelous Gletschergarten (Glacier Garden). 

Himmelsleiter

The Himmelsleiter also referred to as Jacob’s Ladder, Ladder to Heaven, or Stairway to Heaven, is a popular destination for climbing enthusiasts. It is part of the Klettersteig Donnerkogel and is a Via Ferrata that spans a 40-meter gorge on the Donnerkogel, providing a thrilling experience for those who dare to cross it. Reservations can be made here . 

From the Vorderer Gosausee, first, take the Gosaukammbahn cable car up into the Zwieselalm. Then take the path to the Gablonzer Hütte and finally follow the signs toward the official starting point of the Klettersteig Donnerkogel. 

How to Get to Hallstatt

Although public transportation to Hallstatt may not be the most straightforward, it’s not overly challenging either. On the other hand, traveling by car to Hallstatt is effortless. The village is accessible from major cities in Austria , with Salzburg being the closest and most convenient one.

By Car 

To reach Hallstatt, driving is the easiest and possibly cheapest option, especially if you’re not traveling alone. The village is located roughly 3.5 hours from Vienna, 2.5 hours from Graz, and 3 hours from Innsbruck, while Salzburg is only an hour’s drive away.  

Parking : Hallstatt’s center is closed to cars during the daytime and the few existing parking spots are reserved for the inhabitants of the village. However, two main parking areas , P1 and P2, are available. P1 is closer to the village but fills up quickly, while P2 is a bit further away but still within walking distance. Both charge hourly and daily rates and shuttle buses run regularly between the parking areas and the village, making it easy to get around without a car.

By Train & Ferry

Traveling from Austria or Germany to Hallstatt by ÖBB train usually requires a transfer at Attnang-Puchheim. From this point on, only (slightly) slower regional trains run to Hallstatt, calling at the Hallstatt Bahnhof, on the east bank of the Hallstätter See. 

As the village lies on the west bank, you will have the unique experience of approaching Hallstatt across the water. A ferry service meets each arriving train and takes you to the Schiffstation, just north of the Marktplatz (€3, buy on the spot).

Book your train tickets well in advance, as prices tend to increase closer to the travel date. Also, check out the Einfach-Raus-Ticket which allows up to five people to travel together throughout Austria on regional trains and some buses for a fixed price. The ticket is valid for one day of travel and its price depends on the number of people traveling, starting at €36 for a single person and increasing by €4 for each additional one.

By Bus (from Salzburg)

From Salzburg, you can reach Hallstatt by taking the bus route as well, but it involves changing buses twice. First, board bus #150 to Bad Ischl (1h 25m, every 30min), then transfer to #542 heading to Hallstatt Gosaumühle (30min, every 20min), and finally, take bus #543 to Hallstatt Lahn (10min, hourly). Once you reach Hallstatt Lahn, it’s only a brief walk to the village.

Price : Tickets cost around 15€ each way and can be purchased from the first bus driver. Just inform them that you’re heading to Hallstatt Lahn to avoid buying separate tickets.

Getting around hallstatt.

With no cars allowed in the village during the day, it is effortless to explore Hallstatt on foot. In addition, it is so compact that you can stroll from one end to the other in less than 30 minutes. And if you’re feeling more adventurous and want to explore beyond the village, you can take the funicular up to the Salt Mines or catch the local bus to the Ice Caves.

Where to Eat in Hallstatt

Most eateries in Hallstatt tend to close when the tourist buses stop arriving, so if you plan on dining later in the evening, you may need to reconsider. While there are a few restaurants, they tend to be quite touristy and lack variety in their offerings. However, if you’re looking for a quick and casual bite, there are some cafes and casual spots that may be more up your alley.

• Muk´s Schmankerl : This casual spot offers coffee to go and a tasty selection of wood-fired pizzas and light snacks.

• Seecafé Hallstatt : Seecafé guarantees breathtaking views of Lake Hallstatt, whether you choose to sit on the outdoor terrace in summer or enjoy the view from the large windows during winter. Don’t miss their delicious avocado toast with eggs!

• Burgerman The Station :  If you’re in the mood for a juicy burger and crispy fries, this is the place to head to. Vegetarian and vegan options are available as well.

• I da Mitt : At this laid-back eatery, you can indulge in delicious Flammeküche while sipping on a glass of wine or beer. In fact, it was the only place open on a Saturday night to grab a drink. 

Where to Stay in Hallstatt

By staying overnight in Hallstatt you will make the most of your visit and explore the village at your leisure without the crowds. However, if the limited availability of affordable rooms is an issue, consider nearby villages as an alternative. 

Obertraun , for instance, is just a short bus ride away and provides an excellent base for exploring the stunning caves and 5-Fingers nearby. Hop on Bus #543 from Hallstatt Lahn and you’ll be there in just 7 minutes for a fare of €2.30.

If you prefer hiking, Bad Goisern offers some picturesque walking paths, while the village of   Gosau provides access to the stunning Gosauseen. To reach these villages, take Bus #543 from Hallstatt Lahn to Gosaumühle (10 minutes), then switch to Bus #542 to Bad Goisern (11 minutes) or Gosau (17 minutes)

When to Visit Hallstatt

No matter what time of year you choose to visit, Hallstatt’s enchanting allure remains ever-present, whether it’s blanketed in snow, adorned with the vibrant colors of autumn, or bursting with verdant greenery. Therefore, determining the best time to visit Hallstatt depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your trip. 

If your goal is to steer clear of crowds, keep in mind that summer is the busiest season, but winter can also be bustling, particularly during the Christmas period. However, if you plan on exploring other destinations such as the Salt Mine or the Dachstein Caves , the best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn.

| June (Thursday after Trinity Sunday) – Corpus Christi Procession : This is a centuries-old tradition that originated in the old salt-mining village when the Jesuits held colorful processions. Due to limited space, the procession moved to the Hallstätter See on salt-carrying ships and traditional boats decorated with flowers and garlands, providing locals with a beautiful view of the “Salt Mountain,” which had been their source of income for thousands of years.

| 29 th of November – St Nicholas crosses the lake : Every year, the charming shores of Lake Hallstatt are illuminated by the twinkling torches of Obertraun’s children, as they eagerly await the arrival of the legendary St. Nicholas. He crosses the lake in a traditional wooden boat, carrying a generous sack filled to the brim with mouth-watering apples, nuts, and chocolate. 

| 5 th of December – Krampus Procession : On the Eve of St. Nicholas, the Krampus tradition comes to life as locals dressed in spine-chilling, hand-crafted masks descend from the Hirlatz Cave, perched high above Hallstatt. While St. Nicholas rewards good behavior, the Krampus take it upon themselves to punish the naughty children. 

| 8 th of December – Hallstatt Christmas Market : The Hallstatt Christmas Market is open for only one day each year. Marvel at the intricate three-dimensional crib scene and tantalize your taste buds with the famous Christmas cookies and spicy smoked fish, freshly caught from the nearby Lake Hallstatt.

Morning of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

I recommend spending the morning of your Hallstatt day trip by wandering around the town center, checking out the notable attractions and beautiful viewpoints, and of course, taking tons of photos.

You can see the highlights of Hallstatt Zentrum comfortably over the course of one morning because the town is tiny and walkable. Below is a quick overview of the places you can visit during your self-guided walk.

Marktplatz Hallstatt

Dominated by a fountain and statue of the Holy Trinity, Marktplatz Hallstatt is the very center of the town and is adorned with picturesque alpine buildings that will make any photographer croon.

Spend some time roaming the quaint area, dipping into the cafes to pick up Austrian pastries, and mooching through souvenir shops.

Depending on what time you visit, the buildings may be awash with summer blooms or coated with a layer of thick snow. During the warmer months, there are often concerts and religious events held in the marketplace while come winter, it hosts the annual Christmas Market. 

Evangelisches Pfarramt

There are a couple of churches in town that you will spot while exploring on foot during your day trip to Hallstatt. A relic of the late 18th century, Evangelisches Pfarramt is an iconic element of the Hallstatt skyline and affords a lovely view of the lake from the tower.

Michaelskapelle, Beinhaus & Ossuary 

The chapel and cemetery of Michaelskapelle sit just to the north of the village. Inside the church, you can see the Hallstatt ossuary, a collection of hundreds upon thousands of human skulls and bones.

In a touching sentiment, the skulls are inscribed with the name of the deceased, their year of passing, and intricate floral paintings. 

If you want to visit the ossuary then the admission cost is €1.50. It’s open to tourists from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm. 

Classic Postcard Viewpoint 

You’ll agree that everywhere you look in Hallstatt is worth stopping to snap a photo, but it’s still worth visiting one or two of the official viewpoints.

Walk less than two minutes north of the churchyard and you will find the point marked as ‘Aussichtspunkt Hallstatt’ on Google Maps, or ‘classic viewpoint.’ From here you will get a striking shot of the village within its mountain setting, the perfect memento from your day trip to Hallstatt. 

Hallstatt Waterfall 

It might surprise you to hear that there is a waterfall in the heart of Hallstatt! It might not quite rival the massive, tropical waterfalls of Bali and the Philippines, but it gets pretty close and offers up some fantastic photography opportunities.

The trail starts not far from Marktplatz and it takes a pleasant 20 minutes to reach the attraction.

Small Island

Head south of the village to Small Island, which floats a few meters off the lakeside. The teeny island is connected to the mainland by an equally teeny bridge and once you cross over you’ll have a clear view of the village.

It takes 15 minutes to walk to Small Island from Marktplatz, so you might want to make this either your first stop or last stop of the morning on your Hallstatt itinerary. 

Afternoon of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Salzbergwerk hallstatt.

For the afternoon of your one day in Hallstatt, you can head to one of the town’s most interesting attractions, the salt mine. With a 7,000-year history, the mine is one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

The mine is located higher up in the mountains and you basically have two options to get there.

You can ride the Salzbergbahn funicular from the town center (near the P2 parking lot) which takes a few minutes and delivers you a 10-15 minute walk from the mine entrance. The cost is €22 for a return or €12 one way.

You can also purchase a combo ticket for the funicular and the salt mine, it costs €40 per person.

Alternatively, you can opt to hike up for free. This takes around 1-1.5 hours which will definitely lengthen your Hallstatt itinerary. The route itself is well-marked and easy to follow, however, it’s pretty steep, so be prepared with proper shoes and lots of water.

If you don’t use the funicular at all, then the entrance to the salt mines only costs €27 per person. In this case, you’ll need to calculate some extra time for hiking down as well (it takes around 45-60 minutes).

The mine is only accessible via a guided tour and comprises around 2 km (1.2 miles) of walking and the rest is via mine train. The tour itself takes around 70-80 minutes and they depart every 30 minutes between 9 am – 4 pm. You need to be there 30 minutes prior to the start time.

It’s important to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing as the temperature below ground averages 8°C (46°F). You’ll get a protective jacket and trousers prior to the tour that you’ll need to put on top of your regular clothes.

Therefore even if you’re visiting in the heat of the summer, it’s best to wear jeans and t-shirts rather than dresses or skirts (or at least have a change of clothes in your backpack for the tour).

Hallstatt Skywalk

Warm up after your mine tour at one of the most scenic stops of your one day Hallstatt itinerary. The Hallstatt Skywalk is an observation deck that juts out 350 meters (1,148 feet) above the town and grants an uninterrupted view of the lofty ranges.

There is no entrance fee to visit the viewpoint so if you’re not fussed about the mine tour I’d still recommend popping up to take the sights in.

Restaurant Rudolfsturm

Either for lunch or as an afternoon treat, you can pay a visit to this scenic cafe which has a terrace that overlooks the lake and mountains. It’s located right next to the Hallstatt Skywalk so you can easily visit after taking in the scenic views.

If you have a sweet tooth, try their apple strudel – it’s seriously one of the best I’ve ever eaten!

Evening of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Hike to waldbachstrub waterfall or glacier garden.

Conclude the perfect one day Hallstatt itinerary with a leisurely hike that gives you a final opportunity to experience the majestic nature. There are two suggestions that are located close to one another in the Echern Valley of Hallstatt: Waldbachstrub Waterfall or Glacier Garden.

If you don’t want to move your car or you arrived with a different kind of transport, you can start both hikes from Hallstatt Parking P2. From there, you have multiple options to start your hike: you can either take Echerntalweg, Kohlstattweg then Malerweg, or cross the river and walk along Malerweg until you reach Parkplatz Echerntal.

Alternatively, if you’re running short on time or you don’t want to hike that much, you can drive your car to Parkplatz Echerntal as well.

Right after passing by the parking lot, you’ll be presented with a fork. You can take the paved road on the left which will lead you to the Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten).

This is a cluster of unique rocks, landforms, fairy pools, and streams that formed during the last Ice Age as the glacier in the gorge receded. This natural wonder is accessible by following the signs for Simonyhütte and the Wiesberghaus.

If you take the gravel road on the right, you’ll be heading in the direction of Waldbachstrub Waterfall. Just a heads up: although the trail is signposted, none of the signs actually say the name of the waterfall so it’s quite easy to get lost. You will come across some forks during the trail, when in doubt, always take the right one!

To be completely transparent, we didn’t manage to find the waterfall during our hike. At the third or fourth fork, we accidentally took the wrong turn and ended up going up to the Glacier Garden.

If we would have taken the right turn and crossed the little stream, we would have found the waterfall within 15 minutes. But unfortunately, we took the left and after climbing up lots of stairs, we found ourselves at the Glacier Garden. Not complaining though as it was really beautiful, but it would have been easier to just take the paved road from the parking lot if I would have wanted to come here.

Anyways, reaching the Glacier Garden from the Echerntal parking lot takes around 30 minutes while hiking to Waldbachstrub Waterfall takes around 40-45 minutes.

Unless you skip some of the earlier activities on the itinerary, you will need to choose one hiking option. However, if you have longer than one day in Hallstatt then I highly recommend you tackle both of these hikes. 

Restaurant am See

After an exhausting but (hopefully) wonderful day exploring Hallstatt, it’s finally time to sit down and satiate your hunger! You might have already scouted out a place to eat during your stroll around Hallstatt Zentrum but if not then I suggest heading to Restaurant am See.

Tables spread out over the lakeside terrace providing enchanting panoramic views as you eat. The menu comprises typical Austrian fare, freshly caught fish, and a hearty mix of beers, wines, and spirits. 

Useful Info for Visiting Hallstatt 

How to get to hallstatt.

Salzburg is the most convenient springboard for your Hallstatt day trip and features the closest international airport. If you rent a car then the scenic drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt will take 1-1.5 hours to complete.

Arrive as early as possible to secure parking in town at one of the two central parking lots, especially during summer, public holidays, and weekends. Hallstatt is very popular among tourists and it’s not rare that the parking lots fill up before 10 am.

Taking the public bus or train from Salzburg takes longer so you will definitely need to book a hotel in town to make this Hallstatt itinerary worthwhile. Buses and trains both take around 3 hours each way and require a couple of changes.  

Bus number 150 departs from Salzburg Hofwirt (C) and takes you as far as Bad Ischl Bahnhof. From here you will need to switch to the 542 bus and then again to the 543 at Gosaumühle.

Trains depart from Salzburg Hbf with a change at Attnang-Puchheim before reaching the terminal in Obertraun on the eastern side of the lake. At this point, you will need to hop on a ferry across the lake to reach Hallstatt.

Best time to visit Hallstatt

Defined by four distinct seasons, the village is a year-round destination and the best time to plan your day trip to Hallstatt depends on your personal preferences.

Peak season is during the summer months of July/August, this is when the town sees the most crowds and the hottest temperatures.

In total contrast, the town is likely to experience snow during the winter months of November through February when the temperature can drop to 0°C (32°F). This makes it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts and the city bursts into a ski resort.

Overall, the late spring and autumn months are the most pleasant time to visit when the scenery is alive with summer flowers or leafy autumn foliage. Temperatures lingering around 15-19°C (59-62°F) make these times of year the perfect time to include some light hiking in your Hallstatt itinerary.

How to get around Hallstatt

Once you reach Hallstatt you can easily explore the village on foot as it’s so tiny. Most of the attractions on my itinerary are within walking distance so I recommend parking your car for the duration of your one day in Hallstatt. In fact, you’ll have to – the town center is a car-free zone!

All the places on this Hallstatt itinerary are accessible by foot, however, some of them are located higher up in the mountain. While it’s totally possible to hike up there, you might want to take advantage of the funicular that transports you to the top within minutes.

Where to stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a small place and hotel options are quite limited (and expensive). The following three places are my recommendations for where to stay in the center of town.

Make sure to book in advance to secure your accommodation, especially if you plan your Hallstatt itinerary during summer!

LUXURY – Hallstatt Hideaway

This adults-only resort is located right on the waterfront and comprises a deluxe portfolio of suites that offer lake views. Modern interiors feature a rustic twist and the most decadent options come with additional features ranging from private patios to private spa pools.

MID-RANGE – Heritage Hotel Hallstatt

All rooms and suites at this 4-star hotel provide lake views and are equipped with a private bathroom, coffee maker, and homely touches. The accommodation spans three buildings and there is also a restaurant and sauna on site.

BUDGET – Gasthof Bergfried

This centrally located guest house features compact rooms with en suite bathrooms with the option to upgrade to a balcony suite. The property offers a shared relaxation area with a spa and sauna.

Alternatively, if you have a car, you might want to stay a little further out of town in one of the surrounding hamlets. One of the best options is Obertraun, from where you can reach Hallstatt within 10 minutes by car or you can also take advantage of the ferry.

We stayed at Haus Salzkammergut on our second visit to Hallstatt and absolutely loved everything about the hotel! Great location, amazing views from the balcony, lovely owners, cute doggie, and delicious breakfast. I can only recommend this place!

On my trip to Europe, the village of Hallstatt is the destination I’ve always dreamed of for a long time. Knowing this fairy village through so many beautiful photos on Instagram. I have wished to visit this fairy village once in my life. So, how to spend one day trip from Vienna to Hallstatt? • Hallstatt Alpine Panoramic Day Tour from Vienna

Early in the morning of the second day in Vienna, Austria, I still dreamy after wake up and take the train to go to the Wien Hbf station (Wien Hauptbahnhof, Vienna Main station). My train to Hallstatt village will departs at 6:55 AM. Fortunately, there are many convenience stores in Wien Hbf, so I bought a loaf of smoked beef burgers and a bottle of orange juice to bring on the train and heading to Hallstatt.

Hallstatt blog — Hallstatt 1 day itinerary: How to get from vienna to Hallstatt by train?

From Vienna, Austria to Hallstatt village I traveled by OBB train – OBB is the Austrian national railway company. The train departs at Wien Hbf station to Hallstatt station, from Hallstatt station, I take ferry to get to Hallstatt village.

TIP: You should book a train ticket online to Hallstatt village on OBB’s website in advance and book as soon as possible to get cheap tickets. I booked 3 weeks in advance, so the ticket price is only €19/way from Vienna to Hallstatt. If you book close to the departure date, or buy a ticket at the time of traveling, the ticket price maybe up to €52.40/way.

The OBB trains from Vienna to Hallstatt village run every day of the week. And there are many trips in a day. You can check the train schedule on the OBB website . On every weekday, all trains to Hallstatt are connecting trains, you need to change the train at Attnang-Puccheim station and from there go straight to the Hallstatt station.

Particularly with 2 weekends, there will be a direct train to Hallstatt station at 10:15 AM. And a direct train back to Vienna at 4:32 PM. The remaining are connecting trains at Attnang-Puccheim station.

→ The train traveling time from Vienna to Hallstatt: The connecting trains take about 3 hours 52 minutes, the trains goes directly to Hallstatt about 3 hours 14 minutes.

After arriving at the Hallstatt station, you need to take a ferry from this station to the Hallstatt village (ticket price €2.50/way, duration: 15 minutes). The ferry terminal is located right next to the Hallstatt station, as soon as you get off the train, you will see signs to getting to the ferry terminal, so don’t worry.

One thing you should keep in mind that is the ferry trips usually run follow the arrival time of the OBB train, so if you get off the ferry terminal as soon as you arrive, make sure you will be catched the ferry to Hallstatt village on time. 1 day in Hallstatt, Hallstatt 1 day itinerary: Explore Hallstatt fairy village

Hallstatt village is known as one of the most beautiful villages in the world. This beauty is evident in the very poetic position of the village when Hallstatt is located on a large clear lake Hallstätter See – the most beautiful lake in Austria. And surrounding the village are lush green mountains. From a distance, you can see the village lying on the mountains and facing towards Hallstätter See lake.

As soon as I arrived, I went to Cafe Derbl restaurant located in the heart of Hallstatt village follow the call of my stomach. Moreover, I also need a hot cup of cocoa to cope with the cold winds of Austria (even though it’s already summer).

Hallstatt village is very small so you can walk to visit the entire village in 1 day. I only spent a day exploring the village of Hallstatt and coming back to Vienna in the late afternoon.

In addition, the village of Hallstatt is also famous for the oldest salt mine in the world, but I am not really interested in, so I skipped it :P. Because I only spend half a day in Hallstatt village, I want to spend all the time for walking to see this beautiful fairy village.

At around 4pm, I took the ferry to Hallstatt station and waiting for my train to return to Vienna at 4:32 pm.

Goodbye the beautiful village Hallstatt, dreamy fairy village and hope that I will be able to return to this place as soon as possible.

The closest airport to Hallstatt is over 70 kilometres away, so planning your public transport journey is essential to make it from Salzburg to Hallstatt. It’s easy to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by train and a very popular trip to make.

One changeover is required between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and Hallstatt Bahnhof, typically at either Attnang-Puchheim or Bad Ischl.

It’s easy to book your tickets online (and in English!) at trainline.eu , and you’ll be shown which connections are required. The trip takes anywhere from two to three hours, but the time will pass quickly and pleasantly.

You may instead be wondering how to get to Hallstatt, Austria from Vienna, and the answer is much the same!

When coming from Vienna, however, there are a few different stations you may need to switch trains at. Simply take note of the trip information when booking and you won’t have any issues.

What to expect in Hallstatt

The official language in Hallstatt and the rest of Austria is German. The Austro-Bavarian dialect is spoken here, which is the most common throughout the country.

Most residents speak English as a second language, so you’ll be able to converse with many of the people in Hallstatt.

That being said, it’s a nice courtesy to learn hello, please and thank you in the local language and use when appropriate. This helps you feel more immersed in the culture while also respecting the residents.

Since Austria is a member of the European Union, the euro is used in Hallstatt. Tipping isn’t as common as it is in larger cities like Vienna, though leaving an extra five to 10 per cent of the total bill at restaurants is always accepted and appreciated.

You might also like to leave one or two euros for porters who help you with your suitcase, for example.

How to get around Hallstatt

It’s easy to walk around the centre of Hallstatt without needing any additional form of transport. For areas further out, however, buses and taxis are available.

Bus 543 can take you up and down the Hallstatt side of the lake, as well as neighbouring Obertraun and Bad Goisern.

For taxis, there are two main companies in the region. You can reach Taxi Godl at +43 664 4433 674 or Taxi Rastl at +43 699 1175 4852 to book a ride to your accommodation or an attraction.

To get across Lake Hallstatt, catch the ferry from Hallstatt Bahnhst, right next to the train station, to the Market Square on the opposite side.

You can also rent a boat and become your own captain for the day. With rowing boats, swan pedal boats and electric boats available, you can get around the lake in peacefully and scenically.

The best time to visit Hallstatt

Any time between mid-May to mid-October is ideal to visit Hallstatt. The town is all about the scenery, so you want to visit when the weather allows you to be outside.

Most of the activities and tours are available during the summertime. The shoulder months of May and September are the best for lesser crowds and mild temperatures.

A Hallstatt winter is very chilly, and therefore not the best time for tourists unless you absolutely love the cold! Be aware that the salt mines and a lot of shops are closed during this time, and buses may not be running if it’s too snowy.

Hallstatt has many unique and scenic attractions that tourists can’t help but fall in love with. Here are some of the top things to do in Hallstatt during your visit:

Step out onto the Skywalk

Easily one of the top places to visit in Hallstatt is the Hallstatt Skywalk . Walk along the platform built 350 metres above the town for some of the most memorable panoramic views of your life.

The Skywalk culminates in a triangular viewing platform over the lake, aka the World Heritage View.

If you’re not finished admiring the views and you don’t want to leave just yet, stop by Restaurant Rudolfsturm to enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.

Go down the Salt Mine

The Salzwelten Hallstatt, aka the Hallstatt Salt Mine , is a huge attraction that you won’t want to miss seeing. The region is known for its production of salt, also known as white gold, ever since the prehistoric era, and the mine is considered to be the oldest in the world.

The underground tunnels are over 65 kilometres across 21 tiers and contain the longest wooden slide in Europe.

Learn about the 7,000 years of history as you tour the mine dressed up in typical miners’ clothing. Hear about ‘the Man in the Salt’, a prehistoric miner whose body was found perfectly preserved in the 1800s, and get a commemorative photo taken of you racing down the slides.

To get to the top of the salt mines and begin your tour, you’ll need to ride the cable car. If your time is limited, you can take the funicular up the hill then hike the way down, which takes anywhere between 40 minutes to one hour.

You can head up there as early as nine in the morning, with last rides down depending on the time of year.

Ticket prices depend on age, group, concession, and whether or not you’ll be riding the cable car. For a single adult, a visit to the salt mine and a round-trip on the funicular will cost €34.

Once you’re done, stop by the Salt Mine Shop to purchase some unique souvenirs, like natural salt candles or salt mixes with organic herbs and spices.

Get chilly at the Ice Cave

One of the most magnificent places to visit when in Hallstatt is the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave . While only rediscovered in 1910, the underground wonderland was once occupied by tribes during the Ice Age.

Embark on an adventurous cave tour, see fascinating natural ice sculptures and formations, and bravely cross the rope bridge. The light and sound show is complete with recreated cave bears called Ben and Boris.

Be aware, however, that there are strict drone laws in Austria, meaning you cannot fly your drone near any people or cities.

You should probably leave the selfie sticks at home as well and have your group pics taken the old fashioned way – by fellow travellers!

Sometimes a place is so beautiful that even its cemeteries are must-visits! Hallstatt is definitely one of those places, so be sure to stop by the Beinhaus Hallstatt (aka the Hallstatt Ossuary) on the grounds of the Hallstatt Catholic Church.

Above the graves are flower beds and wooden crosses underneath triangular arches, all facing the direction of the lake.

Perhaps the creepiest area of the cemetery is the Hallstatt Charnel House. The small chapel is filled with 1,200 intricately painted skulls from exhumed skeletons that were dug up to make room in the cemetery.

The tradition of painting skulls with the individual’s name and both birth and death dates began in 1720. Half of the skulls are adorned with symbols, including roses and laurel wreaths, and most bear a Maltese cross.

The skulls are grouped by family and represent entire communities from the Hallstatt area.

Staying overnight in Hallstatt provides you with a unique experience. Once all the day trippers head home, it feels like you have the town all to yourself.

The evenings are magical and you can wander around the streets and the lake in peace.

What to eat in Hallstatt

Carbs are friends of the Austrians, as the cuisine is dominated by meats, bread and potatoes. With all of these carbs, you’ll never go hungry!

Local meals are prepared with rich flavours and are very hearty and comforting. Here are a few of the top dishes to try when in Hallstatt:

• Tafelspitz : One of Austria’s most traditional dinners, consisting of boiled veal, horseradish and minced apples on a plate
• Käsespätzle : Similar to macaroni and cheese, yet made with soft egg noodles and often paired with a glass of wine
• Apfelstrudel : A classic apple strudel pastry, popular throughout Austria and Europe
• Wienerschnitzel : Another of Austria’s national dishes, a breaded and pan-fried veal cutlet served with lemon. Don’t get it confused with the fast-food hot dog of the same name, however!
• Gröstl : A typical Austrian comfort food made with potato, beef or pork, onion, and occasionally topped with a fried egg
• Brettljause : Looking for a snack or wanting to share? Order this platter of cold meats, pickled vegetables, slices of bread, and various spreads

Where to stay in Hallstatt

One of the town’s most luxurious accommodation options is the Hallstatt Hideaway . The historic buildings of the hotel were built in 1740 yet completely renovated in 2014, so you can expect both charming exteriors and contemporary interiors.

There are 84 rooms available in total, though the five luxury rooms offer beautiful lake views from the patio and include a fireplace, a library and a kitchenette. Guests also have access to a private garden by the lake and a spa and wellness centre.

A more affordable hotel in the area is Gasthof Simony , which is perfectly located in Hallstatt Old Town. The historic 15th-century building has a restaurant with a lakeside beer garden, offering Austrian cuisine and homemade pastries.

The vibrant red, old-style house is complete with rustic, wooden rooms and vintage touches to take you back in time.

Airbnb is a great option for long and short stays, covering a lot of different budgets.

Tours to do in Hallstatt

One of the best ways to explore Hallstatt is on foot, so why not organise a walking tour? Unfortunately, since the town is so small, there are limited tours with local guides.

The Hallstatt Tourist Office runs a guided city tour every Saturday during the summer for only a few euros. However, you can find resources online for your own self-guided walking tour to go on during any time of the year.

Best of all, this option is completely free and you can go at your own pace. Create your own map using the points of interest and attractions mentioned earlier, prioritising what you’d most like to see.

Nestled in the Alps of Upper Austria, Hallstatt makes a great day trip from Salzburg or a stop between Salzburg and Vienna .

Getting To Hallstatt From Salzburg

Two buses run from Salzburg to Hallstatt: Bus 150 and Bus 542. Each trip takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Every day, several trains run from the Salzburg train station to Hallstatt, the first departing at 5:12 a.m. The trip takes less than 3 hours. If you take the train from Salzburg to Hallstatt station, you will actually be dropped off across the lake in the village of Obertraun and will need to take a short ferry ride to reach Hallstatt’s town center. A one-way trip costs €2 and offers amazing views of the surrounding area. For train times, visit the ÖBB website.

Getting To Hallstatt From Vienna

While a day trip from Vienna to Hallstatt would be difficult to accomplish, the train ride only takes about 4 hours. It does, however, require a transfer at the Attnang-Puchheim Station.

Another option for getting to Hallstatt from Vienna is renting a car . The drive from Vienna to Hallstatt takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes and passes through some stunning parts of Austria. To navigate to Hallstatt, use Google Maps or GPS navigation.

3. UNESCO World Heritage Site

The region of Salzkammergut has been around since prehistoric times, and the area’s salt mines were in use as early as the second millennium B.C. The Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

According to UNESCO, the salt mine “formed the basis of the area’s prosperity up to the middle of the 20th century, a prosperity that is reflected in the fine architecture of the town of Hallstatt.”

In Hallstatt, you can gaze upon some of the oldest salt mines in the world. Hallstatt’s salt mines date back more than 7,000 years, and today visitors to the area can learn all about Bronze Age mining.

Hallstatt’s salt mine is also home to the oldest staircase in Europe. Discovered in 2002, the staircase has been the subject of scientific research for many years.

Adventure seekers can book an extended expedition of a salt mine, venturing to areas that others don’t normally get to see.

Pro Tip: There’s a Giant Ice Cave nearby, but you have to take the bus to Dachstein Visitor Center, ride up Stone Mountain (Dachstein) on the cable car gondola, and hike for 20 minutes to get to the ice cave. Do note that the ice caves are closed in winter (November through May), but the mountaintop views from the ice caves entrances are fantastic all year long.

At What Time Does Hallstatt Shut Down?

Most restaurants and shops close at around 8 pm. Unlike other European cities where dinner time is usually around 10 pm, Austrians dine earlier in the evening. You will even have a hard time finding a spot for an after-dinner drink. Also, in Austria, shops are normally closed on Sundays and public holidays, but restaurants, groceries, and bakeries should be open for at least part of the day on Sunday.

Are There Any Festivals in Hallstatt?

Yes, the biggest festival is the Corpus Christi Boat Procession on Lake Hallstatt in summer which has been going on since 1623. What Not to Do When in Hallstatt?

Don’t disturb the residents! Hallstatt is well worth the visit, but it’s important to bear in mind that the village and its residents have been affected by the influx of tourists. Many tourists believe that all of Hallstatt is a museum and thus invade the yards and gardens of residents to take a closer look at their homes. This has led to the installation of “no drones” and “no photography” signs on many of the houses.

When it comes to idyllic destinations, Hallstatt has it all. This quaint Austrian village sits on the shores of a tranquil lake at the foot of soaring peaks. White swans float effortlessly across the reflection of the much-Instagrammable church; flower pots hang from traditional houses, and men and women in classic Austrian attire cycle the cobblestone streets, seemingly unconcerned by the crowds of tourists.

Topping the list of things to do in Hallstatt is snapping the iconic photo that has been doing the rounds on social media for years. Although you might have to jostle with throngs of tourists all trying to do the same, the view and photographic proof are worth it.

Top tip:  You will find the best vantage point of the village and church a short walk north out of town.

Hallstatt is tiny and easily walkable. It is a pleasant town to explore on foot, and it will only take a few minutes. If you arrive by ferry across the lake, you will be in the centre with three directions to choose from. They each hold interesting surprises.

It may seem counterintuitive to visit Hallstatt and then get out of town. But the surrounding mountains are stunning, and the reality is that Hallstatt can get slightly chaotic at times ― especially during the peak summer season. Several incredible short walks and longer hikes depart from the village. Not only will you fill your lungs with fresh mountain air, but you will also be exposed to the less touristy side of the region. You will encounter cows, squirrels, and even the occasional friendly woodchopper.

Good to know:  Pop into the tourist office in the town before you go walking. They can supply you with a map, hiking suggestions, and advice for more things to do in Hallstatt.

Hallstatt was not always famous for being beautiful. The small but interesting Hallstatt Museum is a good place to visit if you are interested in learning more about the 7000-year history of the village. There you will find relics, artefacts, artworks, and displays that trace the origins of the village and surrounding regions.

Good to know:  Tickets are available at the door and cost €10.

A trip to the salt mine is one of the most popular things to do in Hallstatt. An old tower, which was once used for fortification, provides incredible views of the lake below. It is the starting point for most visits to the mine. You can also tiptoe out onto the terrifying Skywalk viewing platform for dramatic views, take a tour through the salt mine, or have a go on Europe’s longest wooden slide. A cable car takes you from ground level to the top in 3 minutes.

Top tip:  If you want to visit all the attractions in the salt mine region, then pick up a Salzkammergut Adventure Card at the tourist office. It offers discounts across the town. It is free if you are staying in Hallstatt for three or more nights.

Land in Hallstatt is at a premium, so there is little space to bury the town’s dead. Until cremation was approved by the Catholic Church in the 1970s, officials would reuse graves every 10 to 15 years. They would transfer the bones from the existing graves to the  Beinhaus , or Bone House, where they remain on display for visitors. Although this might seem creepy, artists decorate many of the skulls and bones. Visiting the Bone House is a strangely calm yet sobering experience.

Good to know:  You will find the Bone House in St. Michael’s Chapel alongside the salt mine.

The views of Hallstatt from the lake are fascinating. If you want to head onto the water, several companies offer a range of rentals and tours. Many are fairly costly and fill up quickly with tourists during the peak season.

Top tip:  For a more authentic and budget-friendly experience, hop aboard the regular ferries that connect you to the train station on the other side of the lake. Tickets are cash-only and available on board.

Across the lake from Hallstatt is Dachstein, where you will find beautiful waterfalls, lakes, and ponds. During winter, there are also ice caves and frozen waterfalls. The view from the Five Fingers lookout back towards Hallstatt is breath-taking, more so because of the glass-bottom platform you’ll be standing on.

Hallstatt is one of the most popular villages in Austria. Although it is by no means the only quaint village worth visiting, if you find yourself in the area, a trip to other small villages in the area is certainly worthwhile. If you are on a tight budget, consider staying in one of the nearby towns on the rail route, and catching a train and ferry across to the village. A  Global Pass  or  Austria Pass  is valid on most regional trains in Austria. Although they are slower than those on the high-speed routes, they offer impressive views and efficient service.
