Cingjing Farm, Taiwan: A Detailed 2024 Guide

Planning a trip to Cingjing Farm and wondering what to do? Here’s a detailed guide to help you discover all of Cingjing’s best bits!

Sitting at an elevation of nearly 1750m, Cingjing (also spelled Qingjing) is a beautiful little mountaintop town located in Ren’ai Township, Nantou, Taiwan. It’s famous for being home to Cingjing Farm and the highest skywalk in Taiwan, its cool European-inspired architecture, and proximity to Hehuanshan – one of Taiwan’s highest peaks offering unbelievable alpine scenery.

Even though Cingjing is a relatively small place, it’s home to some incredible experiences that you won’t find anywhere else in Taiwan! While most visitors head to Cingjing Farm on a day trip from Taichung to see flocks of sheep grazing in the Green Green Grasslands, there is so much more to do in Qingjing!

To help you plan the perfect Qingjing itinerary, I’ve included absolutely everything you need to know about visiting this beautiful slice of Nantou County, Taiwan, as well as the very best things to do in this guide!

Ready? Grab a cuppa, and let’s go!

Cingjing Farm is a great spot to visit during spring in Taiwan.

Qingjing Itinerary Pre-Travel Tips

Before you head out to Cingjing, here are a few tips to help you plan a stress-free trip.

  • While it’s possible to access Qingjing from several places in Taiwan, Taichung City is the main gateway to the area. Read my super detailed guide on how to get to Cingjing . I’ve included loads of handy tips and all the info you need to get there, whether you’re coming from Taichung, Sun Moon Lake, or Taipei.
  • If you’re only visiting Qingjing Farm for the day, book a day tour from Taichung for a stress-free experience.
  • Cingjing is a popular tourist spot in Taiwan, so it’s best to book accommodation well in advance. Search the best hotels and guesthouses here on Agoda (or see my top picks below).
  • Try to visit during the week because it gets quite crowded over weekends and the holidays.
  • Make sure to pack comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing much walking!

When to Visit Cingjing Farm

Cingjing is a great destination to visit year-round. However, since Cingjing is a mountainous area, the weather can be much colder and more unpredictable than elsewhere in Taiwan. Therefore it’s a good idea to pack something warm and an umbrella no matter which season you visit.

Let’s have a quick look at what to expect in each season.

Spring (March-May):  Spring is a great time to visit Cingjing. And, with a bit of planning (and luck), you’ll find some of the best cherry blossom viewing in Taiwan here. On most days, you can expect pleasant temperatures with highs ranging between 19 -21°C. However, the evenings can still be quite chilly, so it’s important to pack something warm.

Summer (Jun-Aug):  Thanks to its height, Cingjing is considerably cooler than other places in Taiwan. It’s also the best time to see the Green Green Grasslands at its very best and the perfect time to do stargazing at Hehuanshan. Generally, expect average low temperatures of around 15°C and highs of 24 °C.

Autumn (Sept-Nov):  If you’re looking to do some autumn leaf-peeping, Cingjing is a great place to do just that! Autumn can be quite cold so remember to check the weather before your trip.

Winter (Dec-Feb):  Winter can be ridiculously cold in Cingjing, especially in the early mornings and evenings. However, it’s a great time to soak in one of the nearby hot springs. Hehuanshan is also one of the few places where you can see snow in Taiwan in winter ! Expect average temperatures to range between 6-15°C during the day, while dipping well below zero at night. January is the coldest month.

Where to Stay in Cingjing

Cingjing has heaps of accommodation options to match all kinds of budgets and traveling styles – from the super-luxe Old England Manor to cheap and cheerful minsus and beautiful Cingjing farm stays. However, since the hotels and guesthouses are quite spread out, most of them aren’t close to the best attractions in Cingjing.

Unless you have your own set of wheels, I highly recommend booking accommodation as close as possible to Cingjing Farm. That way, you’ll be close to all the action and within walking distance to restaurants and convenience stores. What’s more, you won’t waste time waiting for the bus or have to tackle a very grueling walk uphill!

Here are my recommendations for the best Cingjing hotels:

  • Budget:   Chingjing Abin Minshuku is a cool  minsu  located 1km from Cingjing Farm. The newly renovated guesthouse features   clean, modern rooms with a private balcony where you can take in the dreamy views. Check rates and availability here .
  • Mid-Range:  The Cotswolds Villa is a beautiful 3-star hotel less than 500m from the Cingjing Upper Gate. It features clean, spacious rooms with large windows overlooking the mountains and forests. The best part? The bus stop is right in front of the guesthouse! Check rates or availability here .
  • Luxe:  If you want to splurge on your visit to Cingjing, Taiwan and looking for a true fairytale setting, then The Old England Hotel is just the place for you. It’s one of the most famous mountain resorts in all of Taiwan, and features beautiful European architecture, exquisite rooms, and gorgeous views. Check rates or read reviews here .

Insider’s tip: Underfloor heating or heaters aren’t common in Taiwan, so it’s highly unlikely that your hotel in Cingjing will have these. Therefore, if you are visiting during winter, best to check with your hotel whether they have electric blankets as it gets really cold at this altitude!

How to Get Around Cingjing

If you don’t have a car, the only way to get around Cingjing is on foot or by bus. While it’s not a large area, it’s important to remember that the little town is set on a hilltop and walking long distances uphill or downhill might not be for everyone.

A few buses travel up and down the mountain, with the  Taiwan Tourist shuttle buses coming roughly every hour. Make sure you have Google Maps installed on your phone so that you can check which bus is right for you. You’ll also want to bookmark your hotel’s address on Google Maps, as there is little information on the buses available online in English. Oh, and don’t forget your Easy Card ! That way, you can simply tap in and out on the bus without having to bother with coins.

Side note:  Apparently, a shuttle bus travels between the northern and southern Cingjing Farm gates too. But, I couldn’t find any timetables online during my trip. The bus runs every 20-30 minutes between the two ticket gates and costs TWD 20 per person.

Cingjing Farm Entrance Fee

If you didn’t buy a Cingjing Farm Pass ( TWD 600 ), when purchasing your bus ticket in Taichung (see more details in my getting to Cingjing guide ), you’ll need to pay an entrance fee to access the farm.

The ticket is only valid for one day and costs TWD 160 during weekdays and TWD 200 weekends, special holidays, and winter or summer vacation. Don’t lose the ticket as you’ll need it to access the other areas!

Insider’s tip:  Make sure to stamp your hand as soon as you enter the farm because, without it, you’d need to pay the entrance fee again. You’ll find several stamp booths near all entrances. Don’t worry, the staff will also point them out upon entry.

What to do in Cingjing

There’s a lot more to do in Qingjing than you might have thought. Besides strolling around the farm and enjoying the spectacular scenery, there are several cool hiking trails to follow, a peaceful garden filled with cute sculptures to peruse, and of course, Hehuanshan to explore. Here are the best places to visit in Cingjing.

cingjing castle

Wander around Cingjing Farm

Qingjing Farm is such a cool place to visit, and not just to get a close-up look at herds of adorable sheep. The entire farm is incredibly beautiful, and the views are simply mind-blowing!

Qingjing Farm comprises three main areas – Green Green Grasslands, Great Nature Theater Ecological Area, and the Guanshan Pastoral Area . While most people start their visit at the southern gate of Green Green Grassland, I highly recommend kick-starting your visit at the northern entrance, which also happens to be the highest elevated point, and work your way down.

Cherry Blossoms Cingjing Farm Nantou Taiwan

There are tons of sheep grazing on the pastures at Qingjing Farm, and you won’t need to venture far to find them. Along the way, you’ll even find vending machines where you can buy grass to feed them. While it might seem like a cool experience, you should know that the sheep are very greedy! I saw quite a few storming people once they opened the packets. If you’re brave enough, go for it! I certainly wasn’t! Just remember, you aren’t allowed to touch the sheep at all. A bag of feed costs  TWD 30 .

If you’re visiting Qinging with kids, it might be fun to watch the daily sheep shearing show at the massive outdoor amphitheater. Weather permitting, there are two performances at 9:30 am and 2:30 pm during weekends and holidays (except Wednesdays).

The Horsemanship Show near the Guanshan Pasture is another cool activity for families. It showcases skilled riders and acrobats originally from Mongolia performing all kinds of tricks. Full disclosure, I didn’t stick around for either of these, as it’s not really my scene.

Qingjing Farm opening hours: 8 am – 5 pm

Snack your Way through the Hawker Market

Once you reach the southern gate, you’ll find a massive food market selling a fantastic selection of Taiwanese and Yunnan-inspired food and snacks.

Most people don’t know this, but after the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, many Kuomintang soldiers were left in China’s Yunnan Province. Over the years, they integrated with the local Baiyi community. It was not until 1961 when a group of these soldiers and their families returned to Taiwan. Many chose to settle in Cingjing, and today, it is a great place to get acquainted with their age-old traditions, customs, and food.

Insider’s tip:  After snacking your way through the market, make your way up the hill where you’ll see the entrance to the Great Nature Theater Ecological Area. It’s a lovely area scattered with windmills and loads of cool photo ops.

Stroll Along the Qingjing Skywalk

One of the best attractions in Cingjing is the stunning 1.68km sky bridge which also happens to be the highest elevated skywalk in Taiwan .

The pathway runs along Highway 14a and offers exquisite scenery of the Nantou mountains, Lushan hot spring Village, and Cingjing’s pastures with grazing sheep, cattle, and horses. It’s an easy stroll offering so many different vantage points that you’ll never be bored!

There are several entry points, but you can access the skywalk near Cingjing Castle if you entered at the northern gate. Alternatively, enter at the Green Green Grassland southern gate right in front of the hawker stands or at the Guanshan Pasture station near the 487-Steps Trail .

The Qingjing Skywalk ticket costs  TWD 50 per adult .

Relax at the Little Swiss Garden

Also dubbed Taiwan’s Switzerland, the Small Swiss Garden is a fantastic place for a gentle walkabout. The garden features a beautiful pond and neatly-kept gardens filled with everything from maple trees and cypresses to colorful flowers, cool LED installations, and quirky art.

There’s also a cute little coffee shop within the garden where you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. Afterward, be sure to pop by Cona’s Chocolates for some decadent sweet treats. Nearby, you’ll also find a Starbucks, Mos Burger, Carton King , and a couple of souvenir shops selling an array of local snacks and knick-knacks.

The entrance fee is TWD 120 . Remember to show your Cingjing Farm Pass or the chop on your hand, to access the garden at TWD 90 .

Opening hours: 9:00am – 9:00pm

Explore the Cingjing Hiking Trails

If you’re into hiking, you should definitely try out a few of the gorgeous hiking trails at Cingjing. While they differ in length and difficulty level, they all offer a unique experience and stunning scenery. Below are some of the most popular ones.

Guanshan Trail:  Walking the Guanshan Trail is arguably one of the best things to do at Qingjing Farm. The trail offers incredible scenery no matter which way you turn. It is about 1.8km long and takes roughly 50 minutes to walk one-way.

The Sunset Trail:  The 1km trail is a firm favorite among sunset chasers and offers incredible views over rolling tea plantations and a deep valley. The hike takes about 30 minutes one-way. The trailhead starts near the Small Swiss Garden.

The Sakura Trail:  If you happen to visit during cherry blossom season in Taiwan, this is the perfect spot to view sakura. The hike is only about 500m long, and it shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes to complete (one-way).

The Tea Plantation Trail:  If you’ve visited some of Taiwan’s other famous tea farms like Fenqihu, Shizhao, or Alishan , you’ll already have a good idea of what to expect. The trailhead is located near Cingjing Farm Hotel and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Join a Hehuanshan Sunrise Tour

A visit to Cingjing would simply not be complete without stopping by one of Taiwan’s highest mountains, Hehuanshan . With an altitude of 3412m, Hehuanshan (or Joy Mountain) forms part of the Taiwan Central Mountain Range, borders both Nantou and Hualien counties, and offers easy access to Taroko Gorge . What’s more, it’s also home to the highest accessible road in Taiwan!

It’s a great place to go hiking, catch an epic sunrise, watch the sea of clouds, or simply immerse yourself in nature. While it’s worth spending a few days at Hehuan Shan National Forest Recreation Area , one of the easiest ways to get acquainted with this beautiful area is by joining a sunrise tour .

Hehuanshan sunrise

Most tours last about 4 hours and stop at several iconic landmarks within the Hehuanshan National Park. Some of the most notable pitstops include the Dark Sky Park , where you’ll get to enjoy some epic stargazing and the famous Wuling Pass lookout deck, which sits at an elevation of 3275m. It’s a surreal experience and one that I highly recommend adding to your Cingjing Farm itinerary.  PS: Visit during May or June for the best nightscape and stargazing!

Just a heads up:  The tour kicks off at different times depending on which season you visit. I visited during winter, which thankfully meant my tour only started at 5:30 am. In summer, expect tours to begin much earlier, with some trips starting as early as 2:30 am.

saw this Qingjing Farm place mentioned on another blog and I thought – why would I want to visit a farm, so I didn’t click on it. Now I click on yours…then I looked at other photos of this skybridge. Very nice.

Maybe worth a visit.

It’s a bit of a mission to get to Qingjing if you’re not based close to Taichung, but the scenery is worth it. If you can, join a Hehuanshan stargazing and sunrise tour – absolute magic!

June 30, 2022 at

yes, planning Hehuanshan hike too if possible.

I’ve gone from worth a visit to going!

Will already be touring in South, so Taichung will be on the way back to Taipei.

I just checked your BUDGET choice – Chingjing Abin Minshuku -…$150 / night in August! Not a budget place — budget breaker! Also showed no availability on Agoda…but available on Booking.com. Hmm…

Looks amazing though.

Great stuff – hope you have a great trip!

August is summer vacay so prices tend to be a bit more expensive. Also prices in Cingjing are generally more expensive than elsewhere.

Planning a trip this Dec-22 to Taiwan and planning to drive over (by renting a car) to Qingjing from Taipei upon flight arrival. Could I get your thoughts on this please?

October 5, 2022 at

Hey Yan, self-driving is a great idea and you’ll probably get there a bit quicker because you won’t need to wait around for any trains/ buses. Just a heads-up, there are a lot of twists and turns along the way, so be extra cautious. If you don’t want to drive all the way from Taipei, you can take the HSR to Taichung and then rent a car there. There are a couple of car rental booths on the lower level of the HSR station.

Dear Mariza,

My name is Karina, the management of The Cotswolds VIlla. We recently had a group of guests who stayed with us for three nights, thanks to this very blog post of yours that recommends us.

Please pardon us that we did not reach out to you earlier and thank you sooner, as we just heard from the guests about you this morning.

Thank you so much for your hearty help and recommendation. Words cannot show much of our appreciation and gratefulness for you.

We would like to thank you personally. So if you are ever traveling back or passing through the neighborhood, please stop by. It would be fun to have a Blogger-And-Fan meetup and greet!

Please take care, and enjoy your lovely day in Taiwan.

Sincerely, Karina

You’re most welcome, Karina. 🙂 Thanks for taking the time and effort to reach out to me here.

I’d love a meetup, and would definitely pop by when I’m in Qingjing again.

Thanks for the article. I am planning a trip end of the year to Taiwan. Intending to go to both Alishan and Qingjing. Between both, which sunrise would you recommend – Alishan or Hehuanshan? Thanks for your time.

November 20, 2022 at

Hey JJ! Both are absolutely spectacular and unique in their own right. So if you can do both, defo do it! For Alishan, you’ll get to take the little forest railway which is an experience in itself, and for Hehuanshan you’ll get to drive along Wuling Road (the highest accessible road in Taiwan) and visit the Dark Sky Park for some pretty incredible stargazing. Both require a super early start, so just remember to mentally prep for that if you aren’t a morning person.

Hello! Thank you for doing up this post! My family and I will be at Cingjing from a Thursday to Saturday. I’d like to ask – I understand the green green grassland requires ticket to access. We going there on Saturday to watch the sheep show. Does it mean on Thursday and Friday I won’t be able to step in any parts of the area/farm? I’m a little confused on whether green green grassland and Cingjing farm is the same thing? Thank you in advance!

February 27, 2023 at

Hey Su, yes, it’s all part of the same place. The tickets are day passes so if you want to enter the grasslands area on another day, you’ll need to buy a new ticket.

Extending the question that Su Ann asked, if we will to purchase the Cingjing Farm Pass (NT$600) which includes entrance to the farm, transport to and from Cingjing to Taichung HSR and also some other perks, are we also allow only 1 entry to the farm?

August 4, 2023 at

Hey Steven. Yes, it’s only one entry (like a day pass), so make sure not to lose it. If you want to go back the next day, you”ll need to purchase a ticket again.

Is there a hotel in Qingjing Farm itself? so that my age mum dont can just stay in the farm itself. I cant seems to find in agoda?

April 30, 2023 at

Hey Jaslin, there are a bunch of hotels near the farm but not on the farm itself. Have you tried using the map search function on Agoda? That should give you a good idea of how far places are from the actual farm.

Hi how many days is enough to visit QingJing Farm?

May 7, 2023 at

Hey Serene – The farm is not that big so you could easily explore it in one day. However, if you want to do some of the hiking trails and join a sunrise tour, then you’d need at least 2D1N.

Kindly advise if this is possible

Thanks in advance

May 25, 2023 at

Hey Stanley, if you are self-driving it is doable but if you’re relying on public transport it might be a bit rushed. With that said, if your itinerary is flexible it’s worth staying overnight in Cingjing to catch the sunrise at Hehuanshan. Lemme know if you need more deets.

Hi, for the sunrise catch at he huan shan, do we have to hike or the bus or car can drive us up to scenic spot? bring a 4yr old, so thinking how to make it possible.thnaks

June 23, 2023 at

Hey Sylvie, I joined a sunrise tour and the minivan stopped at different spots along the route from where we could view the sunrise. There wasn’t any hiking involved, so it shouldn’t be a problem with a 4yr old IMO. If you self-drive, it will be the same thing. You don’t need to do any of the trails; there are plenty of rest stops along the road.

Hello Mariza, thank you for the informative post on Cingjing!

I will be travelling with my elderly parents who cannot walk for too long (maybe max 30 mins) and will need some breaks in between. I am intending to bring them to Cingjing Farm, Cingjing Skywalk and maybe the Carton King. Could I get your advice on:

(1) Whether we should engage a driver to bring us around for these places? (2) Hoping to go downslope instead of upslope. Would staying near Cingjing Farm help with this? (3) If we want to visit Cingjing Skywalk and go downslope, should we visit Cingjing Farm first before going there? (4) Will there be rest stops (benches) in Cingjing Farm and/or Cingjing Skywalk?

Sorry for the multiple questions as it’s my first time going with my elderly parents and wants the best experience for them! Many thanks in advance.

Hey Hailey,

If you think it might be too taxing on your parents, maybe you can consider only doing a part of the Skywalk and not the entire route. For instance, from the northern entrance inside Cingjing Farm to the midway section (opposite the Qingjing Food Market) – this section is pretty flat and easy to walk. From there, you could catch the bus or pre-arrange a driver to take you to Carton King. (Ask your hotel to help you organize a taxi/driver). If you enter at the midway entry, it’s only about 16 minutes walk down to Carton King. However there are lots and lots of stairs to climb when you exit here, so not really ideal in your situation.

As for the benches, there are lots scattered around the farm, but there aren’t many along the skywalk. Also they are more like long, narrow tubes instead of normal benches.

Finally, I think you’ll find a better selection if hotels near Cingjing Farm itself (close to the northern section), but there are a couple down south closer to Carton King.

Hope this helps!

Hello Mariza! thank you for this info..

I would like to ask if we can do cinjing farm and sun moon lake togeher in day trip? We will rent a car gor this trip. Thank you🙂

Hi Heinzel, it will certainly help to have a car as you will save time waiting for the buses, etc. That said, I wouldn’t recommend visiting both these spots in a day as it will be very rushed and you probably won’t have enough time to enjoy all the sights. If you can, spend at least one full day in SML to visit a few temples, tackle a lakeside trail, take the boat across the lake, and eat at the night market. As for Cingjing Farm, you can see the farm, walk the Skywalk, and maybe pop by the Little Swiss Garden in half a day if you rush it, but you won’t have time to hit any of the trails.

November 6, 2023 at

Hey Enya, The same buses run back and forth between the Qingjing and Taichung every day, so yes it’s possible to catch the same one. Just make sure you are on the opposite side of the road from where you got off and you’re standing right by the bus stop. The schedule is linked in my post, but here it is again for easy reference. Just scroll down till you see the green row; that’s the schedule to get back. Hope that helps!

Hi Mariza, Thanks for your post, very helpful! I’m staying a night at Cingjing then 2 at Sun Moon lake before heading to Alishan, and have a few questions if you don’t mind: 1) If i take the Hehuanshan sunrisde tour can/ should I drop off at Sun Moon Lake after? Also I’ve booked a room at the Cotswold’s Villa (based on your recommendation) thats near the north gate of Cingjing farm right? Which stop do I get off please?

November 22, 2023 at

Hey Kathleen, how will you get to Sun Moon Lake from Cingjing – by bus, shuttle, or private transfer? The Hehuanshan tour ends quite early, around 9 am if I remember correctly, so you would still have plenty of time to get to SML, but I suggest double-checking the timings of your transport before booking your tour. Cotswolds Villa is about 500m from the north entrance of Cingjing Farm, so it’s easily walkable. The bus stop is a 1-minute walk from the hotel, and you’ll want to look out for the Naluwan bus stop near the CPC gas station. Make sure to have Google Maps open with the hotel as your end destination so that you have enough time to press the stop button. The driver doesn’t stop at all the stops. Hope that helps!

November 30, 2023 at

Hi, so we’ll br back at the hotel around 9am? That leaves an hour (or 2) for me to take the shuttle bus from Cingjing to Sun Moon Lake 🙂 – yay!

By the way is Carton King south of Green green grasslands? And is it walkable there and back to Cotswolds?

December 1, 2023 at

I walked down all the way to Carton King and it was fine, but the route back up is a bit too hectic. I suggest you catch the bus back up or try to get a taxi (there might be some drivers hanging around Secret Garden).

Hey there CH, thanks for popping by. I would personally choose your first option, as there are no direct buses from Cingjing to Taipei. If you prefer to take the second option, just keep in mind that you would need to get back to Taichung first, and from there take a local train/ the HSR to TPE.

Here’s a link to the direct bus (Kuo-Kuang 1833) from SML to TPE for your reference. 🙂

How to Visit Hehuanshan for Epic Sunrises, Hiking, and Snow

Sunrise above a sea of clouds at Hehuanshan

Hehuanshan (合歡山 / Hehuan Mountain or Mt. Joy) is one of the most appealing high mountain areas and one of my favorite places in Taiwan .

Imagine a place where you can practically drive a car to the summit of a 3000+ meter mountain, see snow in a tropical country (there even used to be a ski resort!), and witness the famed sea of clouds (雲海) at sunrise. That would be Hehuanshan!

For casual visitors, Hehuanshan requires a bit of planning . For example, there are only three buses from Cingjing Farm to Hehuanshan per day. There’s also only one hotel at Hehuanshan, Songsyue Lodge, and it is very difficult to book (find out how in my Songsyue Lodge review ).

In this article, I’m going to cover a lot: how to get to Hehuanshan by car, bus, or tour, things you need to prepare, how to go stargazing or see the sunrise, all the main lookout points, and how to hike to 5 of Taiwan’s top-100 peaks .

2024 Earthquake Update: Due to the April 3 earthquake, the main hikes around Hehuanshan were closed, but most of them have now reopened. Highway 8 from Taichung/Cingjing to Hehuanshan and Highway 7甲 from Dayuling to Yilan are still open, so you can still drive from Taichung to Hehuanshan to Yilan. However, Highway 8 from Dayuling to Taroko Gorge in Hualien is indefinitely closed. See my guide to visiting Hualien post-earthquake .

Hehuanshan Introduction

Three grass covered mountain ridges with a road going across them

In a country that is famous for its high mountains, Hehuanshan is the 43 rd tallest, at 3422 meters (11,227 ft). It is a national forest recreation area spanning Nantou and Hualien counties and lies within Taroko National Park – this may surprise you, as most people first think of the park’s namesake feature, Taroko Gorge.

Hehuanshan is also Taiwan’s first and only dark sky park ( see official entry ).

A large Taroko National Park sign with mountains and clouds behind

The mountain belongs to the Central Mountain Range (中央山脈), the main mountain range in Taiwan. Although it is closer to the east coast, most people reach it from Taichung on the west coast, especially in the last few years, with major landslide damage on the highway from Taroko Gorge to Hehuanshan.

Hehuanshan actually consists of 5 peaks : North Peak (3422 m), East Peak (3421 m), Main Peak (3417 m), West Peak (3145 m), and South Peak (3070 m).

A cement staircase leading up to a lookout platform on top of a grassy mountain, with a misty mountain peak behind it

Four of these peaks (all of them except South Peak) are on the list of the 100 Peaks of Taiwan (臺灣百岳).

Shimenshan (石門山), a great spot to watch the sunrise at Hehuanshan, is also on the list. This means that you can rather easily bag 5 of the 100 great peaks of Taiwan in one place – nowhere else can this be done without hiking for many days!

Access to Hehuanshan is on Highway 14A . The road was originally an aboriginal trail across the high mountain range. The Japanese military built the first road over Wuling Pass (武嶺, 3275 meters), which is between Hehuanshan Main and East peaks.

A mountain lodge on the side of a mountain

After the KMT arrived in Taiwan, President Chiang Kai-shek had a ski lodge built at Hehuanshan, which is today’s Songsyue Lodge (松雪樓) . The KMT used the ski resort for military training as part of their plan to someday take back China.

Today, Wuling Pass remains the highest navigable pass in Taiwan and all of East Asia. The lodge now serves as a popular accommodation for hikers in the region.

Seeing Snow at Hehuanshan

Classic view of the three ridges of Hehuan Mountain but with some snow on them and in the foreground

Hehuanshan is nicknamed Taiwan’s “Snow Village” (雪鄉). In January and February, snow sometimes falls on its peaks and around Kunyang Parking Lot, Wuling Pass, Hehuanshan Visitor’s Center, and Hehuanshan Service Station.

Hehuanshan is the best place to see snow in Taiwan without doing a difficulty multi-day hike such as Snow Mountain.

There is no other place where you can drive up to such a high altitude where snow regularly falls right on the road. You can also drive up to Taipingshan , but snow only falls there around once per year, or sometimes not at all. There have also been two freak snowfalls at Yangmingshan in Taipei , in 2016, 2018, and 2024).

An old black and white photograph of a Taiwanese person on skis at a ski resort many years ago

Even though Hehuanshan used to have enough snow to make a ski resort, due to warming temperatures, there is much less snow at Hehuanshan today compared to the 1970s, such as in the above historical photograph.

Nowadays, if it even snows a little at Hehuanshan, it will be in the national news across Taiwan . Then thousands of people will flock there to try to see it.

If the main goal of your trip to Taiwan is to see snow (I know from my Taiwan Travel Planning group that many people do), you risk being disappointed .

Even if you come in January or February, which have the highest chance of snow, you might travel all the way there to find there’s no snow that day.

Looking out from an old ski lift building and a mountain scene

It only snows sometimes in January and February , and the snow doesn’t always stay on the ground. Or sometimes, you might only see a little snow on the mountains, but there will be none on the road or you can’t touch it.

What’s more, if you plan to drive to Hehuanshan to see the snow, there are some important things to know. First, if there’s fresh snow and it made the news, the road to Hehuanshan could be totally jammed with cars .

Some years, the police even have to step in to control the traffic. Check this blogger’s experience seeing the snow at Hehuanshan to see pictures of the traffic jams.

A curving mountain road with yellow rails and snow blanketing the mountain slope above and below it

Second, because the roads are very steep and winding around Hehuanshan, they can become very slippery and dangerous with snow or ice on them.

When there’s fresh snow, the park authorities may totally close the road until they have a chance to clear them. So there’s a chance you could drive all the way there and then not even be allowed to enter.

Usually, once they may open the roads after snow has fallen, only cars with special chains on their tires will be able to enter . You can buy these chains from service stations on the way up to Hehuanshan.

A misty snowy mountain scene with blue sky and sun shining above

Due to these possible difficulties, not many private drivers are keen to take tourists up the mountain in winter. Try contacting Anda , one of my recommended driver agencies, who say they can do it. Please note that there will be added costs for the tire chains, and seeing snow is never guaranteed.

Otherwise, the best way would be to take the bus , and buses will usually be able to get through.

See the official Taiwan Weather’s Bureau’s Hehuanshan weather forecast for the most reliable info about temperatures and snowfall.

Things You Need to Bring

A macaque hiding among some vegetation

Due the 3000+ meter elevation at Hehuanshan, you may experience altitude sickness . If you are coming directly from sea level, like Taipei or Taichung, I recommend asking your doctor for diamox , which helps reduce the symptoms. You’ll start taking it before you go up.

Staying at Cingjing Farm one night first can help your body to acclimatize (see my Cingjing Farm guide for all the details). This is what I did, and I didn’t experience altitude sickness at Hehuanshan (even though earlier the same year, I experienced altitude sickness at a similar altitude in Peru after flying directly there).

There are very few shops, restaurants, convenience stores, and no gas stations at Hehuanshan. Only the Hehuanshan Visitor Center sells a few drinks and snacks and Songsyue Lodge has buffet dinner available for guests or non-guests (see pics of the food here ). Fuel up and bring everything you might need , including food and water.

Songsyue Lodge is the only hotel at Hehuanshan. An advance booking is essential and hard to get. There’s an oxygen machine on site for emergency altitude sickness situations.

Permits are no longer required for any of the Hehuanshan peaks. But you do need one for Mt. Qilai, which starts from Hehuanshan.

Getting to Hehuanshan

Your main options for getting to Hehuanshan are going to be by tour, driving, or taking the bus.

Hehuanshan Tours

Looking down on the roof of a Visitor Center at Hehuanshan

For many visitors, taking a tour to Hehuanshan is the easiest.

Hehuanshan sunrise tours like this one from Cingjing Farm are very popular. Whether you choose the sunrise option or the later morning tour (no sunrise), you’ll get to stop at four of the famous lookout platforms (I’ll describe each one below) on the drive up to Hehuanshan.

There’s also a Hehuanshan stargazing tour , but you’ll need some luck to have a good experience on this one. If it’s cloudy, you won’t see much. Also don’t do it around full moon, when the stars are harder to see. You can also see stars on the sunrise tour, so in my opinion that one is much better.

If you’re not staying at Cingjing Farm, you can join this Cingjing Farm and Hehuanshan full day tour from Taichung .

From Taipei , here’s an overnight tour to Cingjing Farm and Hehuanshan , or here’s an overnight Hehuanshan hiking tour that includes four peaks. For both, you will stay at a guesthouse around Cingjing Farm.

I absolutely loved driving to Hehuanshan! Driving by yourself (or hiring a private driver ) gives you maximum flexibility to stop anywhere you want for taking pictures. The views along the way are unbeatable.

Note that you can even ride a scooter to Hehuanshan, but could be a VERY cold drive!

Taichung or Sun Moon Lake to Cingjing Farm

A very tall, modern Buddhist monastery with golden dome and spire at top

The most recommended way is to drive from Taichung on the west coast to Hehuanshan via Cingjing Farm.

I rented a car on Klook and picked it up at Taichung High Speed Rail Station (see my HSR guide and book discounted HSR tickets here ). I recommend starting there because then you won’t have to drive through any city areas – the station is outside of the city center.

It’s a 1.5-hour drive from Taichung to Cingjing . The first half to Puli is an elevated freeway which is very flat and very easy to drive. Read all about how I rented the car and drove to Cinging Farm here .

A Taiwanese chef in white chef uniform and tall white chef hat making some chocolates on a dark counter

You can consider to make some small sightseeing detours for a few cool things to do in Puli , such as Cona’s ChocoCastle ( buy tickets ), Paper Dome , Chung Tai Chan Monastery (the world’s tallest Buddhist monastery), Hohocha tea , Antique Assam Farm , and Caidie Falls .

If driving from Sun Moon Lake , you will also drive to Puli first, with all the same possible stops.

After Puli, the road starts going uphill towards Cingjing and becomes more and more winding . Anyone who tends to get sick should prepare carsickness medication (暈車藥), available at any pharmacy in Taiwan.

If you plan to spend a night at one of the many excellent guesthouses around Cingjing Farm , see my Cingjing guide for my recommended ones.

Cingjing Farm to Hehuanshan

A white car parked on the side of a road with mountain view behind

From Cingjing Farm, where I spent one night, it’s a 40-minute drive to Hehuanshan area. I especially loved this part of drive!

Yes, it was super winding, but I personally found that made it a very fun drive. At no point did I feel it was too challenging. But I should mention that I never experience carsickness.

A steep, sharp turn in a high mountain road

If you need lunch, I highly recommend this authentic Yunnanese cuisine restaurant just north of Cingjing. It’s only open at lunch and dinner.

Although I was often tempted to stop at the side to take pictures, the road is very narrow, so you should only do so when it’s safe.

A white toyota car parked on the white stripes on the side of a highway with metal railing behind it and misty mountaintops in background

There are 5 main parking lots in Hehuanshan region . Each one has epic views and access to different trails. The driving time from the first one to the last one is 25 minutes.

Ideally, with a car, you can easily visit at least 4 if not all 5 of the parking lots – the final one I would say is optional. I’ll describe each of them in detail further below.

From Yilan or Hualien

A village on the slope of a high mountain

It’s also possible to drive from Yilan to Hehuanshan via Taipinghshan (another famous mountain, which requires most of a day to visit), Wuling Farm (famous for flower viewing), and Lishan (another high mountain).

This is a long and winding drive, so check the times carefully. Keep in mind that driving on Taiwan’s high mountain roads even for just a few hours can be very tiring.

From Hualien to Hehuanshan , so many travelers look at a map, see how close Taroko Gorge seems to Hehuanshan, and think they can easily drive there.

Even GoogleMaps will tell you that it’s only a two-hour drive . But unfortunately, this is only a best-case scenario, and it could take much longer due to road construction work even since landslides destroyed the road in several spots.

Looking up a narrow gorge with gray cliff walls on either side, gray river below, and a highway carved into the left side

In the last few years, typhoons and landslides have severely damaged Highway 8 in and above Taroko Gorge. Currently there is construction work on 4-5 spots along the highway and it is closed at certain points of every weekday for reapairs.

For the latest updates about construction work on this route, see Taroko National Park road updates webpage . Click the small arrow beside Highway 8. It is updated on the first day of every month. For my interpretations of these updates, including maps I made showing where are the closures are, join my Taiwan Travel Planning group and search my latest posts about Taroko Gorge.

There is no public transportation from Taroko Gorge or the East Coast of Taiwan to Hehuanshan. You’ll need to take the bus from Cingjing Farm, Sun Moon Lake (via Puli) or Taichung (via Puli and Cingjing Farm).

You can’t reserve any of these buses. Just swipe your EasyCard to board.

From Cingjing Farm

A sheep grazing on a green lawn, with walking path, fence, and some people walking behind it

The best way to reach Hehuanshan by bus is from Cingjing Farm, where there are many lovely guesthouses. Bus 6658A takes around 1 hour and there are three bus departures per day .

In the below left side table (in yellow), Cingjing Farm (國民賓館(公車接駁處), bus stop location ) is the third column. See the pink rows, departing Cingjing Farm and 8:20 AM, 10:10 AM, and 2:30 PM .

Note that the the Cingjing Farm stop (國民賓館(公車接駁處) is at the bottom end of Cingjing Farm near Cingjing Guesthouse (the official farm accommodation).

A bus time table for taking the bus from Cingjing Farm to Hehuanshan

You can also  board the bus at several other stops along the highway going through Cingjing Farm area. The bus will stop at all those small stops along the highway.

See a list of all the stops at Cingjing here . Just add a few minutes to the bus departure times from the table. You can also check GoogleMaps directions or the Bus+ app for estimates at each stop.

The table shows  three stops at Hehuanshan  ( 武嶺  Wuling Pass), ( 松雪樓  or Songsyue Lodge and Hehuanshan sunrise place), and ( 小風口  Xiaofengkou and Hehuanshan Service Station). I’ll describe each of these stops in detail below.

The green table on the right shows the bus times for those same three stops at Hehuanshan, going back to Cingjing Farm. The departure times from Hehuanshan are 9:40 AM, 12:30 PM, and 3:50 PM .

Looking down at a narrow highway and pass with a viewing platform full of people

Always wait 5-10 minutes early at these bus stops, just to be safe, and  wave your arms  when the bus is coming so it will stop for you!

For a full day at Hehuanshan, catch the first bus (8:20 AM) . You’ll get almost 7 hours if you take the last bus back. You could get off the bus and explore one area. Then you could catch the second bus to a different area before catching the last bus of the day back to Cingjing.

If you take the second bus of the day (10:10) to Hehuanshan, you’ll still get almost 4 hours at Hehuanshan, which will be enough for 1 or possibly 2 hikes if you move fast. The same thing goes if you take the first bus of the day then leave on the second one. Don’t take the third bus (2:30 PM) from Cingjing unless you have accommodation booked at Songsyue Lodge.

Also don’t miss that last bus going back to Cingjing Farm ! Otherwise you will be stranded and have to try to hitchhike back.

From Taichung or Taipei

If you’re starting in Taipei, you’ll need to ride a very early train or HSR to Taichung first. From Taichung, it will take you 3.5 hour to reach Hehuanshan by bus, with only one possible departure per day . It will give you 4 hours of visiting time at Hehuanshan.

Nantou bus 6664 departs Taichung Gancheng Station at 8:30 AM and Taichung HSR station (B1) at 8:50 AM. Catch the bus from Gancheng for the highest chance of a seat. At Taichung HSR station, it’s advisable to get there early and line up.

Find more detailed info in my guide to traveling from Taichung to Cingjing Farm .

At Cingjing Farm, get off the bus at Cingjing Farm (Cingjing Guesthouse) (清境農場(國民賓館)) bus stop at 11:00.

From the same bus stop, bus 6658A will depart for Hehuanshan at 11:10 AM. I suggest you confirm with the driver when getting off the first bus that you are at the correct stop for getting the bus to Hehuanshan.

A mountain peak lit up by sun with gray clouds above

Since you’ll arrive at Hehuanshan around noon, you’ll have just under 4 hours before the 3:50 bus from Hehuanshan back to Puli.

You’ll have to choose only one stop to make at Hehuanshan . My personal recommendation is to stop at Wuling Pass and hike Hehuanshan Main Peak or to stop at Songsyue Lodge and hike Hehuanshan East Peak.

If you go very quickly, you could squeeze in both. Get off at Wuling Pass, hike Hehuan Main Peak, walk back to Wuling Pass, then down the other side to Songsyue Lodge, where Hehuan East trail starts. Even if you only make it halfway up Hehuan East, you’ll get to see the ruins of the old ski lift!

Returning to Puli, you might have to change buses at Cingjing Farm stop (國民賓館(公車接駁處) – the bus driver will advise. Arriving at Puli Bus Station, you’ll transfer to a bus back to Taichung – there are regular departures.

Main Parking Lots and Hikes at Hehuanshan

There are five main parking lots at Hehuanshan where you can enjoy the views or access various hikes. I’ll describe these in the order coming from Cingjing Farm.

Yuanfang Lookout (Stargazing Spot)

A sign showing a cartoonish Taiwanese aboriginal couple sitting on a platform, with a sky of stars behind them, and some Chinese characters

The first place you can easily stop when traveling from Cingjing Farm to Hehuanshan is Yuanfang Lookout ( 峰觀景台 , 2750 meters). It is a 30-minute drive from Cingjing Farm .

Yuanfang Lookout feels like the start of Hehuanshan area . From the large circular lookout platform, you can see a wide panorama of mountains, including Qilai Mountain (奇萊山), one of the most famous mountains in Taiwan.

Several layers of mountains enshrouded with clouds

This is where stargazing tours like this one come to look at stars. A large sign at the parking lot indicates that this is the start of the Hehuanshan Dark Sky Park (合歡山暗空公園). There’s a 24-hour restroom for stargazers.

If you’re coming by bus, there’s a bus stop here , but I don’t recommend using up one of your bus stops here . There’s no hike and it’s a still quite a ways from Hehuanshan, where the views will be even better.

The Hehuanshan sunrise tour will make a stop here.

Expansive view of a mountain top village, with more mountains and clouds behind it

Kunyang Parking Lot & Hehuanshan South Peak

A sharp curve on a mountain road with yellow stripes painted on it, metal railing at side, and mountain views beyond

From Yuanfang, it will be another 10 minutes’ drive to the next lookout point, Kunyang Parking Lot (昆陽停車場, 3070 m), which is even better.

This large parking lot has restrooms, picnic tables, a cute deer statue , and panoramic views.

Looking out, you’ll see Mount Nenggao (to the far right), Mount Qilai (looking straight out), Hehuanshan East Peak (dominating the view to your left), and Hehuanshan Main Peak (far left, you can see the highway to your left going up to it).

A cure cartoonish statue of a deer wearing winter clothing and small snowman sitting on the rock beside him, with cloudy mountain peaks in the background

This is the official start of the Hehuanshan National Scenic Area and Taroko National Park , so you’ll see signs for both.

From this parking lot, you can cross the highway and hike to Hehuanshan South Peak . This is the lowest (3070 m) of Mount Hehuan’s 5 peaks and the only one not on the “Taiwan 100 Peaks” list.

A grass hill with some hikers on it and a highway sign on the bottom left that says Hehuan Mountain

On the plus side, South Peak is the easiest of the five Hehuanshan peaks to climb . The trail to the summit is only 1 kilometer and takes 45 minutes to one hour (return).

Also, with the relatively short climb, and because the peak has a clear view to the west, this is considered the one of the best places to watch the sunset in Hehuanshan region.

You can watch the sunset from the other four peaks of Hehuanshan, but all of them will require longer and more difficult hikes.

A grassy mountain slope with road ascending across it

From South Peak, it is possible to hike (2.5 km, 1-1.5 hrs) north to Hehuanshan Main Peak (see next entry). The trail basically runs parallel to the highway.

You can see the black dotted trail from South Peak to Main Peak on this Hehuan Main Peak map .

Wuling Pass and Hehuanshan Main Peak

A wide mountain vista with dark green forested valley to the left, light green grassy hills to the right, and a road traversing them

The short, uphill stretch of road from Kunyang Parking Lot to Wuling Pass is one of the most picturesque and iconic scenes of Hehuanshan, especially when viewed from Wuling Pass.

The road angles its way up the sides of three alpine grass-covered ridges between Hehuanshan South and Main peaks. It only takes five minutes to drive from Kunyang to Wuling parking lots, or 30 to 40 minutes if you walk along the highway.

Selfie of Nick Kembel wearing cap, sunglasses, and maroon hoodie, with a sign behind him that says 武嶺

Wuling Pass (武嶺, 3275 m) is the highest point you can drive to in Taiwan. From this point, you get epic mountain views in all directions. The parking lot is small relative to how popular this spot is, so it can be hard to get a parking spot.

Hehuanshan East Peak dominates the view to the left, but you can’t see Songsyue Lodge yet – it’s on the other side of it.

A grass mountain with series of hiking trails going up it

To hike Hehuanshan Main Peak , you have to park at Wuling Pass then walk 15 minutes down that pretty highway to the trailhead . There’s no parking at the trailhead. It’s a 3.7 kilometer return hike to the peak, with 200 meters of elevation gain. See the route map here .

Although this hike is the second easiest after South Peak, it may feel a little tougher than you imagine due to the altitude.

2024 Update : Hehuanshan Main Peak trail is currently undergoing some trail maintenance (non-earthquake related) and is expected to be closed until August 18, 2024.

A young man sitting on a round cement military bunker with stone wall leading up to it, looking at his phone, with mountain scenery in the distance

Near the summit, there’s a compositing toilet with an impressive view and a few old military bunkers – in fact, this was the highest military outpost in all of Taiwan!

In total, it took me 2 hours return to do this hike from Wuling Pass.

Nick Kembel standing on the peak of a mountain beside the peak sign with his arms outstretched

If coming by bus, the Wuling bus stop is here . It’s a smart idea to start your day here because it’s the highest point.

For visitors coming for only 4 hours, you could get off the bus here, hike to Hehuanshan Main Peak, then down to South Peak, and catch the bus out from Kunyang Parking lot.

Another option would be do Main Peak then hike down the other side to Songsyue Lodge (see next two entries) and hike part or all of East Peak, depending on your time.

Hehuanshan Sunrise Lookout & Shimenshan

A valley filled with a sea of clouds just before sunset, with sky lit up in different colors

After Wuling Pass, the highway descends steeply for 3 minutes by car (or 20 minutes on foot) to the next large parking lot, at Hehuanshan Visitor Center (合歡山遊客服務中心). The bus stop here is called Songsyue Lodge (松雪樓) .

The visitor’s center and parking lot are on the left side of the road. The center has a small café selling hot coffee and a few snacks like tea eggs rice dumplings (粽子 or zongzi ).

A mountain lodge on the right on the slope of a mountain, with a large mountain at the top left

On the right side of the road is Hehuanshan Lookout (合歡山瞭望臺). This is the famous sunrise viewing platform . From this platform, looking to your far right is Hehuanshan East, with a small road leading to Songsyue Lodge on its slope – this is another iconic scene of Hehuanshan.

Mount Qilai dominates the view behind Songsyue Lodge – the Qilaishan trail actually starts just behind Songsyue Lodge.

Looking down at a valley filled with a sea of clouds with a tree on the right in the foreground and pink sky above

Looking straight out is an immense valley, where you will hopefully witness the sea of clouds at sunrise or sunset (I saw it at both). You’re actually looking out in the direction of Taroko Gorge, but you can’t see that far.

To your far left is Hehuanshan North Peak, and behind your is Hehuan Main Peak.

While the sunrise tours will all bring you to Hehuanshan Lookout, you can actually hike 20 minutes from there to an even better sunrise viewpoint called called Shimenshan (石門山), which is where I shot these sunrise photos.

Hehuanshan Lookout is still great and you can see the sea of clouds from it. But Shimenshan is a little higher, more natural (standing on a mountain instead of wooden platform), and in my opinion offers just a slightly better angle for viewing the sunrise.

I can quite confidently say that this was the most spectacular sunrise I’ve ever experienced . It was certainly my best sunrise experience in Taiwan – and that’s after seeing multiple sunrises at Alishan.

A narrow valley far below filled with clouds which are being lit up by the rays of sun from the sunrise

Shimenshan is actually one of the Taiwan 100 Peaks – and the easiest of all 100 peaks to climb.

The trailhead is here , just 7 minutes walk down the highway from Hehuanshan Lookout. You only have to hike 5 or 10 minutes up the trail to gain a better view than Hehuanshan Lookout platform.

Hike 15 minutes up to the peak for the ultimate Hehuanshan sunrise view. Here’s the route map .

Songyue Lodge and East Peak

A winding road leads to a mountain lodge bathed in early morning light

The same bus stop I described in the last entry (Songsyue Lodge bus stop) also provides access to Songsyue Lodge itself ( read about my stay at the lodge ) and the trail to Hehuanshan East Peak.

Right next to Hehuanshan Lookout, a small gated road (see above photo) on the right goes to Songsyue Lodge . Only guests at Songsyue Lodge can drive through the gate. Drivers need to use the buzzer to ask the front desk to open the gate.

Looking down a wooden staircase and small road leading to a small hotel on the side of a mountain

On foot, though, anyone can walk down the small road to Songsyue Lodge .

The hotel’s private rooms and restaurant (buffet dinner or breakfast for TWD 300, free for guests) are in the iconic main lodge here , originally built for Chiang Kai-shek. The cheaper shared dorm rooms are in and old ski lodge here behind and down a wooden staircase (see below image) from the main lodge.

You can take a look close up look at either of these historic establishments, but only guests can enter the dorm building.

Looking down a wooden staircase going down a mountainside, with a hotel lodge at the bottom

The 1.9 km (300 meters of elevation gain) hike to Hehuanshan East Peak starts right behind Songsyue Lodge. You’ll be climbing what used to be the ski hill .

You can see several remains from of the original ski lift , including gondola towers right behind the lodge and others further up the hill.

Looking down a grassy mountain slope and two fallen ski lift towers

This hike is a slog of uphill stairs all the way to the top. I actually only went halfway up because I mainly wanted to see the Hehuanshan East Peak Ski Lift Remains (合歡山 東峰步道 纜車遺址).

This is the best relic of the old ski resort, so it’s worth hiking halfway up the mountain just to see it. You can (carefully) enter it from the trail.

The inside of a ski lift room that is in ruins

Some people climb Hehuanshan East Peak for sunrise or sunset . Of course there’s nothing more inspiring than viewing a sunrise from a high mountain peak like this.

However, you must know that the sunrise will be partially obstructed by Pingfeng and Qilai mountains. In other words, you’ll be watch the sun rise above those mountains instead of from closer to the horizon, like at Shimenshan.

The side of a mountain with lodge, all lit up by morning sun rays

When I stayed at Songsyue Lodge, I was tempted to climb East Peak for sunrise. But in the end, I chose Shimenshan.

Not only is it much easier and shorter, but it provides a more direct sunrise view. Then, I hiked up Hehuanshan East Peak after I had my breakfast at the hotel, with plenty of time to return before check out.

Xiaofengkou, North Peak, and West Peak

A tall mountain on the right with forested hill in the foreground

The fifth and final major parking lot at Hehuanshan is at Hehuanshan Service Station ( 太魯閣國家公園合歡山管理站 ), which is a small Taroko National Park visitor’s center with restrooms. It is also called Xiaofengkou (小風口).

Xiaofengkou is also the terminal bus stop before the bus turns around and drives back to Cingjing Farm.

Fewer visitors make it this far when coming up from Cingjing or Taichung. If you were driving up from Taroko Gorge (when the road is not under construction), this would be your first stop in Hehuanshan area.

A mountain that is mostly shaded but lit up at the top, with a small reflecting board visible on its right side

The view from the center is good and some people watch sunrise from there. However, the lower parking lot will be in the view and it’s less common to see sea of clouds here, so it’s not as good as Hehuanshan Lookout.

Some locals sleep in their cars or camp in the parking here to catch the sunrise or to get an early start for hiking North and West Peak.

The Hehuanshan North Peak trailhead is here , 10 minutes’ walk past the center and parking lot. This is a more difficult hike than all the Hehuanshan peaks I’ve mentioned so far. It takes 3-4 hours return, with 500 meters of elevation gain. Here’s the route map .

This is the tallest peak of Hehuanshan, an overall beautiful climb, and it’s possible to see sunrise, sea of clouds, and sunset from the peak.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ちはや (@chiya_2stepfromhell)

One of the highlights of this hike, besides the awesome views all around, is the giant radio wave reflecting board here . There’s also this pretty pond and a cool tree that local photographers love to shoot at night, with a sky full of stars above it (see above Instagram post from a taiwanese photographer).

From North Peak, an even longer and more challenging trail leads to West Peak . This is an 8-10 hour return trip , so it is not to be taken lightly!

Do you need a permit for climbing Hehuanshan North and West Peaks? There’s a lot of conflicting info online about this, with many sites saying that a police permit is required.

A grassy mountainside

After thoroughly researching, I can confirm that permits are not needed for North Peak, West Peak, or any of the Hehuanshan peaks .

In the past, a police permit was technically needed for North and West Peak, but they seldom checked. And ever since 2020, they just aren’t required anymore.

Note that some people camp around Hehuanshan North Peak for staging their West Peak climb. This may not technically be allowed, but many people do it. If you do, be very careful, as the weather can be intense or change quickly up there!

How to Visit Shifen Waterfall, Taiwan’s Most Famous Waterfall

Staying at songsyue lodge, hehuanshan (and how to book it), 3 thoughts on “how to visit hehuanshan for epic sunrises, hiking, and snow”.

Nice to read your post. I used to live in Puli and have been up and down that mountain maybe 2 dozen times and explored many areas part way up it via bicycle, scooter, or motorcycle. You brought back memories, like many of your posts do.

Notably, on a scooter, sometimes the air is so thin you will lose almost all power (it helps if you can adjust the air intake on your scooter). Also, once while climbing a peak with a friend, an unexpected pressure change came along with some clouds and cold and we both nearly lost consciousness, similar to diver’s madness, only regaining our full wits after descending as quick as we could and coasting our scooter down the West road several hundred meters of altitude to the little parking lot of shops. It is a proper alpine environment, so things like this can happen on a rare occasion (once in 2 dozen trips).

One other noteworthy place is the tea shop and huge tree on the East Side of Hehuanshan, off the road you would take all the way down through the pass and to the coast. It is a few km down from the peaks and a couple of km past the little waterfall off to the left of the road. You’ll pass the tea shop on the right, and the couple that runs it is very nice. On a cold afternoon (and many afternoons are cold up there, even in the summer), some black tea and honey is welcome.

The parking lot, which is across the road from the shop, is above a gigantic tree, maybe the widest diameter I have seen on the island (and I have been to Smangus). You can walk down a path and stand on a boardwalk that surrounds that tree and admire it. Basically, the tea shop (and amazing tree) are between the main parking lot on Huhuanshan and the gorge to the East via the main road.

Thanks so much for sharing these tips and for showing us around when we visited you there!

I’m Taiwanese and learned so much from your article, too! Thank you so much for providing the detailed information!

How to know about Cingjing Farm, let’s learn about some brief information as a detailed guide to help you discover all of Cingjing’s best bits.

Overview of Cingjing Farm (#cingjing farm blog)

cingjing sunrise tour

Founded in 1961, Cingjing Farm is located in a large highland area in Ren’ai Town, Nantou County, Central Taiwan. At an altitude of 1,750 meters above sea level and with an average temperature of 15–23 degrees Celsius from May to September every year, Cingjing Farm has lush forests and a variety of unique plants.

Separated from the rapid urbanization of the cities in Taiwan, the Cingjing farm retains its rustic and wild features of nature. From an original green, clean, and safe agricultural model, Cingjing Farm has developed into an extremely large farm with many beautiful architectures and landscapes as it is today.

cingjing sunrise tour

Visit Cingjing Farm, visitors will be overwhelmed with green steppes, majestic mountains surrounding the farm, and flocks of sheep, cows, and even horses grazing in the green grassland. Moreover, the cool European-inspired architecture of the farm makes visitors feel lost in the fairyland in the middle of real life.

How to get to Cingjing Farm? (#cingjing farm blog)

cingjing sunrise tour

While it is possible to access Cingjing from several places in Taiwan, Taichung City is the main gateway to the area. The most straightforward way to travel to Cingjing Farm is to take the direct Nantou Bus from Taichung HRS Station. There are only four direct buses daily, so timing is crucial if you come from elsewhere in Taiwan.

cingjing sunrise tour

Once you arrive at the Taichung HSR Station, go to Exit 5, where you will find the Nantou Tour Bus ticket booth. Do not forget to grab a map and the bus timetable while you are there.

Be note that if you want to go to the top of the mountain, take bus 6658 to Cuifeng. The one-way price for Cingjing Farm is NT$265.

When to visit Cingjing Farm? (#cingjing farm travel blog)

Cingjing Farm

Cingjing is a great destination with a seasonally typical beauty of the year. However, since Cingjing is a mountainous area, the weather can be much colder and more unpredictable than elsewhere in Taiwan. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack something warm and an umbrella no matter which season you visit.

cingjing sunrise tour

Spring (from March to May): This is a great time to visit Cingjing, then with a bit of planning (and luckily), you’ll find some of the best cherry blossom viewing in Taiwan here. On most days, you can expect pleasant temperatures with highs ranging between 19–21 degrees Celsius. However, the evenings can still be quite chilly, therefore it’s important to pack something warm.

cingjing sunrise tour

Summer (from June to August): Cingjing is considerably cooler than other places in Taiwan. It’s also the best time to see the Green Green Grasslands at its perfect time to do stargazing at Hehuanshan. Generally, expect average low temperatures of around 15 degrees Celsius and highs of 24 degrees Celsius.

Autumn (from September to November): The season to peep some autumn leaves in the forests, and to experience the most authentic feeling of “being lost in Europe” when you come here.

Cingjing Farm (1)

Winter (from December to February): Winter can be ridiculously cold in Cingjing, especially in the early mornings and evenings. However, it’s a great time to soak in one of the nearby hot springs. Hehuanshan is also one of the few places where you can see snow in Taiwan in winter! Expect average temperatures to range between 6-15 degrees Celsius during the day, while dipping below zero at night. January is the coldest month.

Where to stay in Cingjing Farm?

cingjing sunrise tour

Cingjing offers accommodation to suit your financial condition from the super-luxe to cheap, cheerful, and beautiful Cingjing farm stays. However, since the hotels and guesthouses are quite spread out, most of them aren’t close to the best attractions in Cingjing. Here are some recommendations for the best Cingjing hotels:

cingjing sunrise tour

Budget: Chingjing Abin Minshuku is a cool Minsu located 1km from Cingjing Farm, with clean and modern rooms, and a private balcony where you take in the dreamy scenery around the farm.

Mid-range: The Cotswolds Villa is a beautiful 3-star hotel less than 500m from the Cingjing Upper Gate. It features clean, spacious rooms with large windows overlooking the mountains and forests. The best part? The bus stop is right in front of the guesthouse.

cingjing sunrise tour

Luxe: The Old England Hotel is just the place for you if you want to splurge on your visit to Cingjing, Taiwan, and look for an authentic fairytale setting. It’s one of the most famous mountain resorts in all of Taiwan and features beautiful European architecture, exquisite rooms, and gorgeous views.

Cingjing Farm Entrance Fee

cingjing sunrise tour

The ticket is only valid for one day and costs NT$160 during weekdays and NT$200 on weekends, special holidays, and winter or summer vacations. You should carefully keep the ticket to be able to enter and exit different areas of the farm. Make sure to stamp your hand as soon as you enter the farm because, without it, you must pay the entrance fee again. You’ll find several stamp booths near all entrances.

Mount Hehuanshan - Sunrise | Weather | Winter Visit and Snow

Mount Hehuanshan - Sunrise | Weather | Winter Visit and Snow

Taiwan

When Is the Best Time

Watching the sunrise above the clouds was what I wanted to experience. Our entire trip on the island was focused on the weather forecast for Hehuan Mountain. In the end, we were successful watching a breathtaking sunrise.

A woman on the staircase path to the summit of Hehuanshan

The best months for a sunrise tour to the top of Mount Hehuan or Hehuanshan are during the driest time of the year, from October until March. The sunlight has a little variation from summer to winter, rising in June shortly after 5 and in January at around 6.40. Read my must-know tips below.

Weather and Temperatures for Hehuanshan

A hiker above the clouds on Hehuanshan Mountain

How is the weather at Mt. Hehuan during a certain month? How cold is it up there in the winter? How often does it rain in the summer? There is no weather station at Mount Hehuanshan. Most of the statistics on the internet are from another station somewhere at a lower elevation. The temperatures for Mount Hehuan at 3400 meters are lower. That’s why I put official data plus information from the locals together for you.

  • Colder Up There: It’s 8-10 degrees Celsius colder at 3400 m at Hehuanshan compared to lower elevations in areas nearby. Example: When you check weather forecasts at the nearby Cingjing Farm (where you might stay), and it shows 16°C, it will be around 6°C at the top of Mount Hehuanshan. The difference is even higher from other towns/areas in deeper elevation.
  • Colder at Night: It’s even colder during the night and in the mornings of. The night temperature roughly decreases by another 6 degrees. Keep that in mind if you are out there very early in the morning when watching jaw-dropping sunrise.

cingjing sunrise tour

  • General Taiwan Climate   Subtropical with wet and humid summers. Snow is common during winter, mostly in January and February, and it gets very busy here.
  • Rainy Season – Summer (April-September) In the summer months, you should definitely be prepared for rain at Mount Hehuanshan. It’s possible to experience rainfall for 24 hours without a break during the wet season. Rain occurs between 15-19 days. The average day temperature ranges from 10-16°C in the shade, which means pleasant during sunshine while it is hot in lower elevations. It is chilly at the night on average, around 5°C.
  • Drier Season – Winter (October-March) In the winter months, rain is a lot less likely. Snow is possible, especially between December and February. However, heavy snowfall is rare. In the winter of 2018, the heaviest snowfall was in early February and caused a 10 cm blanket of snow. The Taiwanese love snow, as everybody does, and it gets busy during this time of the year. Day temperatures are below 10°C nonetheless, we felt comfortable during the day with sunshine. Even in the winter, sunscreen is essential because of the high elevation. Temps drop to freezing at night.
  • Forecast It’s highly recommended to check the weather forecast a few days in advance (up to 3-4 days) before you book your room at Syue Lodge up there. The problem: It’s hard to find a reliable forecast for Mount Hehuanshan. Most cover only the counties and towns around it. Bookmark the following link as it’s the only official and reliable forecast I know: Taiwan Central Weather Bureau - Hehuan Mountain East Peak  (Click to the map to get weather information for the Hehuanshan area)
  • What to Wear   For your Mt Hehuanshan winter visit, you must bring warm clothes as it’s one of the highest places you’ll visit in Taiwan. A thick jacket, warm trousers, gloves as well as a hat and a scarf are highly recommended. From spring until fall, you should bring sunscreen, but I also took it in the wintertime. The great thing about a summer visit is the refreshing coolness at an elevation of 3000-3400 meters in comparison to the hot city temperatures.

Consider Three Things If You Like to Watch a Sunrise Above the Clouds

The black shimmerning mountains and the sunrise shimmering through and above the clouds

1. Go on weekdays 2. Don’t book your room far in advance.  3. Travel to Taiwan during the driest months to increase the chance.

Do you like to know more? Read the following tips to be successful in watching the sunrise for a jaw-dropping moment in your life.

A híker walking the path down after watching the sunrise

Watching the sunrise on Mount Hehuanshan is very popular in Taiwan. If possible, go on weekdays, weekends are super busy and fully booked. Don’t book the room far in advance. Check the weather forecast when travelling through Taiwan  Taiwan Weather  (for entire Taiwan)

The hotel and one of three peaks of Hehuan Mountain

Pick a date when the forecast for the mountain range is good or even excellent. The receptionist told me often people are disappointed due to the poor weather. The whole week before our stay in November, it was always foggy and rainy on Hehuanshan.

5 Must-Know Tips | Including Sunrise and Weather Forecast

cingjing sunrise tour

  • Best Hotels in Cingjing Farm - Renai : Via booking.com with a low price guarantee. Cingjing Farm  (Google Maps Link) is the closest place. From there, you drive 40 minutes to Mt. Hehuanshan. Some visitors arrange a tour of Mt Hehuanshan from their hotel there! You can also drive on your own.
  • Basic Info Song Syue Lodge : The highest hotel in Taiwan. Located at an elevation of 3150 meters on Mt Hehuanshan. It’s hard to book a room there since it's difficult in English. However, you should only book there if you’re sure about the weather (read below). Most visitors ask their hotel where they stay the night before to make the booking. That's the most successful way.
  • Sunrise vs Other Times : Experience the sunrise up there at Mt Hehuanshan is an outstanding experience. Like one visitor said after he returned: ‘Now, my life is complete!’ But still, any other time on the mountain besides sunrise is also amazing if the clouds are not rolling in.
  • Watching the Sunrise : Most visitors watch the sunrise from the lodge only. I highly recommend walking for at least 15 minutes on the trail for a much better experience (read more below about the trails). You don’t have to walk the whole east trail to the peak, as it is challenging due to the high altitude.
  • Weather Forecast Mt Hehuan : Check the weather forecast via this link. While visiting the peak in good weather is stunning, it’s definitely a disappointment during bad weather. That’s why I recommend booking the lodge (or hostel) just a couple of days before.

Packing Checklist Mount Hehuan

A hiker with a headlamp ascending Hehuan before sunrise

  • If you wish to watch the sunrise, bring a headlamp for the hike in pitch darkness.
  • The driest time is winter, the coldest season. I recommend a down jacket and a beanie.
  • Due to the high elevation, drink plenty of water.
  • Don't underestimate the high elevation of more than 3000 m. It is strenuous if you are not used to such a high altitude. Walk slowly and give yourself an energy kick with electrolytes .

Location and Tips

Taiwan

Hehuanshan National Recreation Area is located in central Taiwan at the edge of Hualien and Nantou counties situated on the Western boundary of Taroko National Park. Depending on the traffic and the road work constructions in Taroko, it takes 2 ½ to 3 hours to get there. It’s a scenic drive, always up to 3150 m elevation.

Where to Stay and How to Make a Reservation Without Chinese Language Skills

Room for four in the hostel on Hehuanshan Mountain

There is only one lodge, Songxue or Song Syue Lodge, which offers luxury accommodations and is the highest hotel in Taiwan. The owner of the hotel also runs the hostel, Huaxue Lodge, which is just below the hotel, five minutes walk away. If you stay in the hotel or hostel, dinner and breakfast are included. The hotel is comfier, the reason that most people like to stay there.  Some people experience altitude sickness. The lodge provides oxygen in this case. The hostel is without heating and has wooden door rooms four and more Japanese futons in one room. Anyhow, each bed has a heating blanket which is quite sufficient for the night. The facilities are clean and hot showers are available. When we came here in November, we were the only guests in the whole hostel. One night in the hostel, including dinner and breakfast buffet, cost around 1.200 TWD (36€ p.p).

Decide if you like to book a room in the hotel or hostel. You can either give them a call, but not all of the employees speak English or book it online. The hotel website is in Chinese only.   Ask at your accommodation before or go to a visitor centre in one of the many National Parks or Recreational Areas and ask if they can assist you with the booking. First, they need to create an account for you before they can make the reservation. The passport number is requested, but you don't need to pay a deposit, just the whole amount when you arrive, preferred in cash. Some people mention that you could camp at the visitor centre on their website, but this is not permitted and could be quite cold and wet.

5 Hiking Trails Around Hehuan

One of the three Hehuan peaks in daylight with plenty of steps

  • Hehuanshan East Peak for the sunrise 3.421 m The famous path is just 1.3 km long to the top, but due to the high elevation, it takes more than an hour, much longer than expected to climb up the steep trail. The height difference is roughly 270 meters. The trailhead is located behind the Song Syue Lodge, but you can park your car at the lodge only if you stay there. Sunrise is around 6 am depending on the time of the year. The most spectacular time is before sunrise. If you like to watch the sunrise from the top of the east peak, start 1 ½ hour before dawn. Anyhow, if you can’t get up so early, walk just half of it for this incredible experience. Most visitors watch the sunrise just from their room or balcony.
  • Hehuanshan main peak 3.417 m It’s a maximum of 2 hours walk in total on concrete. The advantage is that you can walk along the trail even in dense fog.
  • Mount Shihmen Peak 3.237 m The peak is easily accessible, and the trail is 750 m long, roughly ½ an hour, always climbing up. It is also famous for the sunrise, and it takes less effort to get to the top than it is for Hehuanshan East Peak.
  • Cilai Mountain north peak 3.607, Cilai Mountain 3.560 to Kaluolou 3.413 m A permit is necessary; otherwise, it can be fined up to TWD 30.000. There are cabins for overnight stays on the long and strenuous trail. The trailhead is at the hostel and looks very exciting. Some local hikers had a closer look, and so did we, just for an hour. Especially this trail is rich in vegetation with trees and bushes growing in high altitudes, such as different Rhododendron, Bamboo, Taiwan Fir and Coniferous like the widespread Chinese Hemlock.
  • Hehuanshan's north peak is 3.422 m, and the west peak is 3.145 m high. The trails start at the visitor centre and Taroko National Park headquarters.

Free entrance to the park.

Mount Hehuan

It's a tremendous biological diversity and ideal for endemic bird watching with 35 different species. We spotted many birds around the hostel early morning and even at midday.

Waking up at 3am (or earlier to get ready and catch the bus) to journey up the Hehuanshan mountain is an extraordinary experience and a must visit for Cingjing tourists. Half day tours from Cingjing to Hehuanshan can be arranged simply at your hotel, but subject to availability. Or you can book directly with the tour bus operator.

Source: Jiayg blog post on Cingjing .

The reward of making the effort to arise early is to be greeted by a patch of stars shining across the night sky. Even in the winter, Hehuanshan is worth visiting, and in fact, it would be quite an amazing experience.

This self drive video illustrates the beauty and awe of going up Mount Hehuan and we have captured more majestic shots from the mountain range in our post on Hehuanshan and Cingjing .

About Hehuanshan or Hehuan Mountain

3,400m elevation above sea level, the mountain range has a lot to offer with the magnificent scenery and caters to adventurous cyclists, hikers and nature lovers as well as tourists from the hotels or minsu in Nantou or Cingjing heading up for a half day ride to Hehuanshan to catch the sunrise.

Arranging Transportation in Advance for your Hehuanshan Tour

Transport from Cingjing to Hehuanshan is the most popular among tourists although some travel via Taroko Gorge or from Sun Moon Lake as well.

The easiest way as mentioned would be to pre-book from the hotel or minsu at Cingjing as many of these operators work with the local tours for bookings. The tour buses run a fixed route and starts pretty early for star gazing and then moving on to catch the sunrise. Per pax cost for such tours are about NT400 and some contacts can be found on forums sites and blogs. Here's a forum post on tripadvisor that comes in handy.

For those who prefer a more customized journey, taxis are available at Cingjing for booking as well or simply use the itinerary planner on ownrides.com to book the Cingjing to Hehuanshan trip in advance (request also for English speaking drivers if required). The itinerary planner can be found here .

Ownrides has a travel planner for bookings from Taichung or Taipei to Cingjing and Sun Moon Lake. It is customizable so you probably would want to add in other destinations and request for the Mount Hehuan sunrise viewing to be included as well! Pricing is transparent but do also check out forums for other cab drivers recommended there as well.

Exactly How To Get To Hehuanshan From Anywhere In Taiwan

13 January 2020.

Hehuanshan had long been earmarked as a place I desperately wanted to visit during my trip to Taiwan.

But as I began planning my escape to the mountains, I quickly realised that actually getting there wasn’t going to be nearly as straightforward as I had anticipated.

After hours of pouring over guide books, online articles and bus timetables to no avail and nearly deciding to scrap it from my itinerary altogether, my wonderful hostel owner in Sun Moon Lake came to the rescue providing me with exactly what I needed.

You see, there used to be a direct bus from Taichung though that no longer exists and while there’s a bunch of information about how to reach Cingjing, there’s next to nothing about how to travel the last stretch into the mountains.

So, here’s exactly how to get to Hehuanshan from just about anywhere in Taiwan.

* This post includes affiliate links and any purchases made through these links will earn me a small commission at no extra cost to you. *

Taichung is the easiest major city from which to travel to Hehuanshan but will require you to transfer buses in Puli and Cingjing.

If you’re arriving from Taipei, Hualien or Sun Moon Lake, scroll down for more information.

Taichung To Cingjing via Puli

Now, while Taichung is the best major city to start from, your journey into the mountains will actually start in Puli so, from virtually anywhere in Taiwan (except the east coast), you’ll first need to make your way here.

Thankfully, there are five direct buses that travel from Taichung to Cingjing via Puli.

Bus 6664 departs from Taichung’s Gangcheng Station between 8:20 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. and takes 2.5 hours to reach Cingjing. Check the timetable here .

If you happen to miss these services or are travelling in the afternoon, buses bound for Puli depart Taichung every 20 to 30 minutes between 7:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. at which time they become hourly. The trip takes an hour and 15 minutes. Check the timetable here .

From Puli, there are 12 services a day travelling to Cingjing between 6 a.m. and 4:35 p.m. The trip takes an hour and 10 minutes and the scenery as you weave higher into the mountains is simply beautiful. See the timetable here .

If you’re going to have a long wait before your next bus, I’d recommend getting off at Cingjing Guesthouse, not Cingjing Farm as many people recommend. Here you’ll find a well-stocked 7-11 and a spacious courtyard with cafes and food stalls to while away the time. There’s also a small fruit market across the road if you’re after some hiking snacks.

Tickets between Taichung and Cingjing cost $239 (€7) and you can pay using your EasyCard .

Short on time? You can also get a shared or private shuttle from Taichung directly to Cingjing where you can transfer to the public bus. Check rates here for Shared Transfers  and Private Transfers .

Cingjing to Hehuanshan. How To Get To Hehuanshan

Cingjing To Hehuanshan

The final leg from Cingjing to Hehuanshan is the most challenging as there are just 3 departures each day.

As of November 2019, these were at 8:20 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. arriving in Hehuanshan an hour later. The return trip from Hehuanshan to Cingjing departs at 9:40 a.m., 12:20 p.m. and 3:50 p.m.

Note that the final stop in Hehuanshan is a short way further than Songsyue Lodge so the buses may arrive around 10 minutes after the actual departure time. It’s also just a small minibus so be ready and waiting to ensure you can fit on.

Given these buses are so infrequent, you might also consider hitchhiking. If you’re visiting around the weekend or during the summer high season the main mountain road receives plenty of traffic and it easy enough to get a ride the rest of the way from Cingjing to Hehuanshan, or at least to Wuling from where it’s just a 1.5km walk downhill or another short car trip.

I very rarely hitchhike but after meeting another traveller on the bus, we decided to give it ago instead of waiting more than an hour for the bus. Within 5 minutes we were picked up by a friendly couple heading to Wuling and, in a true display of Taiwanese hospitality, instead of just dropping us off once we arrived, they ran around the parking lot asking everyone they saw if they were heading in our direction. When that failed they went onto the road and flagged down every single car until they found one with space to take us.

Yes, the Taiwanese are just the loveliest people ever!

I always felt incredibly safe as a solo female in Taiwan, but if you are planning to hitchhike, make sure you’re comfortable with the potential risks that it presents. It also helps greatly having a map to point out exactly where you want to go as just saying ‘Hehuanshan’ which actually refers to the whole area can cause quite a bit of confusion.

DON’T MISS: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO VISTING HEHUANSHAN

If you’re travelling from Taipei to Hehuanshan, you’ll first need to reach Taichung using either the High Speed Rail or local train which both run regular daily services.

The HSR takes around 1 hour with tickets from $700 (€21). Reserve your seat in advance here to receive a discounted ticket.

Local trains are much slower taking between 2 and 3.5 hours with tickets starting from $240 (€7). Check timetable and fare information here .

Get an early start and plan your connections carefully if you intend to reach Hehuanshan in one day.

Taipei to Hehuanshan. How To Get To Hehuanshan

Did you know that Hehuanshan actually falls within Taroko National Park? Yes, the same place as that wildly impressive gorge you probably already visited way on the other side of the island.

Yet, despite being just a few hours drive away, there’s, rather frustratingly, no regular public transport between the two areas.

From Hualien, there is a single daily bus that goes as far as Lishan that can drop you at Dayuling, some 9km from Hehuanshan, but from there you’ll either need to walk uphill along the road or hitchhike. See the timetable here.

The only other options from Hualien to Hehuanshan are to hire a taxi or private driver or rent your own car or scooter. The drive through the mountains is stunning but expect to pay at least $5,000 (€120) for a driver to make the trip.

This tour brings you to Cingjing and makes it a full-day experience, including Taroko Gorge and numerous stops en route. Otherwise, consider discussing your plans with your hostel or hotel in Hualien who may be able to recommend a driver.

Cingjing to Hehuanshan. How To Get To Hehuanshan

Sun Moon Lake sits just 30 minutes from Puli making it a perfect jumping off point for Hehuanshan without having to backtrack to Taichung.

Buses depart Sun Moon Lake for Puli at least every hour between at 7:25 a.m. and 7:25 p.m. Check the timetable here.

Once in Puli, simply follow the steps outlined in the ‘Taichung to Hehuanshan’ section.

It’s also possible to take a direct shuttle from Sun Moon Lake to Cingjing which will save you the hassle of changing buses too many times. Choose between a shared transfer which has two set pick-up times each day and requires a minimum of two passengers, or a private transfer that allows you to allocate your pick-up time and charges per car making it a great option for families or groups.

See rates and availability here for a Shared Transfer or Private Transfer from Sun Moon Lake to Cingjing.

Hualien to Hehuanshan. How To Get To Hehuanshan

Alishan may be home to Taiwan’s most famous sunrise, but Hehuanshan certainly gives it a run for its money.

Watching the soft dawn glow spill across the endless peaks was nothing short of magical and one of my most memorable moments from Taiwan.

If you’re keen to have a similar experience but not able to stay overnight, a Hehuanshan Sunrise Tour is a great alternative.

Stargazing And Sunrise Experience   |   This tour departs from Cingjing in the wee hours and pairs the magnificent star-studded night sky with a beautiful sunrise over Hehuanshan. See rates and availability here.

Sunrise Or Half-Day Tour   |  Also departing from Cingjing, this 3-hour tour takes you to a perfect vantage point to watch the sun creep over the mountain tops. See rates and availability here.

Both tours have Chinese-speaking guides only, but this isn’t the kind of experience that will require a lot of explanation. They’re also very affordable at around $500 (€15) per person.

Sunrise Tour Hehuanshan. How To Get To Hehuanshan

1  |  At over 3,000m, Hehuanshan is a high altitude area and one of few places in Taiwan that experiences snow over winter.

Aside from the swarms of visitors who flock here on snow days for the rare chance to experience a white winter, this can seriously disrupt transport in the area. Private transfers, in particular, may cease to run during this period or request a surcharge. Snow generally falls between December and February but it can be chilly up here at any time of year so be sure to bring the appropriate clothing.

2  |  Can you reach Hehuanshan in one day? If you plan your trip well, absolutely!

If you leave early enough, it’s certainly possible to reach Hehuanshan in one day from any of the destinations listed in this guide, but unless you’re starting your day in Cingjing or have organised private transportation, I wouldn’t recommend trying to visit the area as a day trip, especially if you plan on doing any hiking.

3  |   The mountain roads are slow and windy and you’ll be spending a great deal of time on the bus, so if you’re someone who gets motion sickness, consider taking precautions before climbing on board.

4  |   Bus tickets between Taichung and Hehuanshan add up to around $400 (€12) each way so be sure to load up your EasyCard with enough funds for the return journey. You’ll find a 7-11 at Cingjing if you need a last-minute top up. Haven’t arrived yet? Purchase your EasyCard here.

5  |  Planning to stay overnight in Hehuanshan? Excellent idea! Read this comprehensive Hehuanshan guide for everything you need to know about hiking, accommodation and planning your itinerary.

Psst. Have you visited Hehuanshan recently? Has anything changed? Leave me a comment below so I can keep this post updated for future travellers!

How To Get To Kenting National Park From Anywhere In Taiwan

Hello! Just wanna shout out that this is so useful! Like you, I have been trying to looking around but there was no clear direction on how to make it to He Huan Shan via Hualien. I am visiting the eastern side, Taipei -Hualien- Taroko National Park,-Taipei. In beteeen we wanted to go Alishan but it’s not possible because it’s on e other side, so an alternative is He Huan Shan, but still not too sure on how to do it as a lot of blog mention to go to Cingjing or Sun Moon Lake, is it possible to travel from Taroko National Park to He Huan Shan straight, or do I have to do an overnight somewhere?

Hi Yiru, I’m glad to hear you found the post helpful! There is a road that goes directly from Taroko to Hehuanshan but no regular public transport that I could find that travels the entire route, only as far as Dayuling. If you’re renting a car / scooter or willing to hire a taxi or driver from Hualien, you can easily reach Hehuanshan on the same day. Another option would be to speak with your guesthouse in Hualien (or the hotel in Hehuanshan) to see if they could help arrange a driver from a shop or guesthouse in Dayuling that could take you from this tiny village for the final stretch up the mountain. Barring this, the only other option will be to travel right around the north of the island and overnight in Taichung or Puli and then travel via Cingjing. Unfortunately, it’s not all that straightforward unless you’re travelling by car, but best of luck and I hope you manage to spend some time in the mountains.

Wah! you went for so many days!!!!!

Hi can I check how do I get from taipei to cingjing? Do u guys have drivers details ? The sunrise tour is in cingjjing? Is this on the way to Taichung ?

Hi Sheevonne, I didn't engage a driver from Taipei to Cingjing so i could not comment on it but you sure can take the HSR to Taichung and then take the shuttle bus up Cingjing. At the Taichung HSR, you can also find cab drivers who would take you up for an agreed price. The sunrise tour is in Cingjing and Hehuanshan, in this case, is actually on the way to Hualien and not Taichung. You may wish to read my Taiwan itinerary at http://cavinteo.blogspot.sg/2014/04/cingjing-sun-moon-lake-taichung-taipei.html Enjoy! :)

What a great adventure! Hope to visit some of the sites mentioned by the previous travelers. Thanks for sharing these wonderful places.

no problem! :)

Tucker Carlson’s 15-City Tour: Find Out Where He’s Going

Tucker Carlson’s tour kicks off Sept. 4 in Phoenix. (Credit: TCN)

Popular conservative host Tucker Carlson is planning a nationwide speaking tour this September featuring a range of newsmakers and political leaders leading up to Election Day .

Carlson announced his plans Monday morning and shared the full schedule with The Daily Signal, which is partnering with Tucker Carlson Live to provide our subscribers with early access to tickets starting Tuesday (details below).

Since launching Tucker Carlson Network last year, the former Fox News host has amassed a huge audience for his video interviews, podcast episodes, and social media posts. He now plans to build on that success with a 15-city tour at some of America’s most recognizable sports arenas.

“I can’t wait to take our show on the road in cities across America,” Carlson said in a statement to The Daily Signal. “We’re going to be talking about real issues with real people. You’d better believe the Establishment will be losing their minds.”

The Sept. 4 kickoff of Carlson’s tour will afford him an opportunity to comment on the latest developments of the 2024 presidential election and interview a wide range of guests, many of whom are household names or recognizable personalities from Tucker Carlson Network.

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , R-Ga., will join Carlson for the Sept. 26 stop at Bon Secours Arena in Greenville, S.C. Heritage previously sponsored Carlson’s live State of the Union special in March.

Carlson’s stops will feature actors Roseanne Barr and Russell Brand; musician Kid Rock; former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy ; media personalities Glenn Beck, Dan Bongino, Alex Jones, and Megyn Kelly; and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s son, will close the tour Sept. 28 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Tickets go on sale starting Friday, June 14, at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Daily Signal subscribers will be able to purchase tickets tomorrow using a special code. Subscribe to our Morning Bell email newsletter or follow @DailySignal on X to receive the code Tuesday morning.

The complete list of tour stops is below.
