The trip was a ’10’ in every way. Your guides were the best in every way. Had a lot of attention, everyone was very helpful along the way. Your arrangements were excellent and I will do othe trips with Strabo again.

— D. Martell

Trip was a 10! I think the Sahara was the best. Loved sleeping in berber tents. The photography was gorgeous and many wonderful photo opportunities. Ron always knew where to be when for best photographs. I’ve known him since 1982 when I went to Ireland, and I always wanted to do his Morocco trip after seeing photos and notices on Facebook from him. His energy, enthusiasm and humor was contagious. I liked his photo talks every so often as he wanted us all to see different things and find our own vision. He showed us examples of his work and other photographers that influenced him. Always informative of our daily activities and culture of Morocco. I loved the variety of hotels and lodges.

— A Converse

What a wonderful Ireland trip we had. Thanks for everything you did to make it possible and so enjoyable. Given how much fun we had and how delighted we were with the trip, we have just one suggestion to add more leisure time in villages. It and all the guides were 10 out of 10. Everyone was a wonderful help. The relationships we forged, particularly with Karen & Joel was the highlight.

— C Potyen

It is tough to pick just one highlight of the tour. Each segment of the trip was fantastic. Florence – early morning photography, walking tours of the city, and the excellent food Tuscany – amazing landscapes, towns and wine tasting Venice – it exceeded everything I had heard

Ron is a 10 plus!!! Your local guide and hotels all 10’s. Loved the trip and now have some great photo memories to view and share with family. We are thinking about Scotland for next year.

10 Things to Consider When Planning a Photography Trip

  • Determine when you are available to go on a photo tour – ensure that your schedule aligns with the tour dates.
  • Take your budget into account when selecting a photo tour to narrow down your available options.
  • Decide what type of photography you would like to focus on – wildlife, landscape, cultural, etc.
  • If you want to go on a photo safari , think about what kind of photo safari suits your interests.
  • Choose a destination that is suited to your interests – make sure the locations for your photography tour align with your photography interests.
  • Check whether the photo tour is designed for your level of photography – are you a beginner photographer or a seasoned professional?
  • Review the itineraries of each photo tour to ensure they match your own photography goals.

What our participants say about our recent photo tours?

tours in photo

This trip was fantastic thanks to Martin’s great planning and enthusiasm. Every detail was well executed from the lodging to the photography locations. I did not know any of the participants beforehand other than Martin. The group was diverse, engaging and alot of fun. Everyone was willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for getting some great shots. Even when weather did not cooperate, there were plans for expanding our photo processing skills at every level. I would not hesitate to book another amazing tour with Inscape Photo Tours. Hopefully, soon.

Due to my very tight work schedule, it delayed for three months after our trip to the Czech Republic to start organizing and post-processing the photos we took there. This directs us to flashback to the days, the four unforgettable excellence private photography tours we were having with Martin. It meant a lot to us, and a lot to describe and review for these unmatched exceptional tours:

First of all, Martin shared with us the best locations and viewing angles to take the photos with his photographer’s eyes, no one else would rush for us to take our good photos, the only time constraint seemed only with our own schedule. His patience in taught us how to frame with the best composition of pictures brought us with an extremely great harvest of lots of best photos we have ever had with other tours. In addition, his professional photographer’s sense of mind helped us to be capable in creatively and effectively using light and shadows to compose the pictures. Even I had using the long exposure for taking pictures in the night time photos taking in the past, I haven’t had many chances to experience in extended long exposure with ND filters in my past trips with high and tight time constraint. As with the help from Martin, it was the first time using the ND filters out of my hometown, the photos were with extremely and incredibly significant great results I have ever had, especially those were taken during the limited blue hour time. Furthermore, Martin showed and taught us how to use lots of the key techniques for post-processing and the importance of post-processing, like the darkroom techniques using with negatives, during the time when we rescheduled to avoid the bad weather time, the rainy hours, hiking in the Bohemian National Park.

Overall, what we experienced and achieved was a lot more than what we could expect. The quality of our trip was excellent. Excellence photography trip with the excellence of guiding. We learned a lot for our future photo trips.

“Attending the workshop in Iceland 2017 with Inscape Photo Tours was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Jan and Martin are not only excellent photographers, but also great friends. They do much more than teaching you the techniques and art of photography. They know how to inspire and motivate the attendants. More than a group, it became a supportive team. I had lots of fun and I´ll never forget it.”

This was my first photo tour with Inscape tours and it won’t be my last. Everything was very organized. As traveling photographers, we didn’t have to think about anything but our camera gear. We had two guides (Martin, the owner) and Jan. Both were wonderful and always willing to help with any photography advice. On a couple of days, we had some local models which we got to photograph in various locations. We also received candid feedback during post-processing which is always helpful.

Martin had all the details worked out ahead of time and was quick to resolve any issues were encountered. Our tour was made up of solo travelers. We had a small group and everyone got along. Looking forward to joining about photo tour in the future!

Hi Martin and Pedro. I am home now and showing my wife the pictures of our trip. I was very pleased with your tour and would recommend it to anyone considering on signing up.

It was a great group and I would definitely go on another trip!

tours in photo

This was our second photo tour with Inscape and just as before all details were nicely handled to maximize time for photography. Martin had great locations lined up for photo stops but also showed flexibility in some impromptu locations, one of which turned out to be amazing. Martin and Jan (often one of his guides) are both great photographers and helpful with issues that arise with cameras or gear.

They help with composition if needed or will just let you go off to shoot alone if that is what you prefer. They are both quite pleasant and fun to be around. We had a great time and have already signed up for another photo tour! Thanks guys!

I have been in Prague before and have taken many “tourist” pictures, but on this photo tour, I was not a tourist. I was a photographer (and Martin had to occasionally remind me of that. ) This time, I took photos that were different from those that millions of tourists take every day. Our tour group visited several places that tourists don’t even know about, and when we shot in the popular tourist locations, we were shooting photos in a different way – seeing the tourist sites through the eyes of a photographer. We looked at details, patterns, and interesting compositions in the Moravian landscapes, and in the many different types of architecture and streets across the various cities and towns. We even photographed some ordinary, mundane things and turned them into fascinating photographs. One afternoon, when it started to rain during our shoot, we found something else to photograph and came away with creative, unusual pictures. I even captured a photo of a “ghost” lurking around the Old Town Hall tower. Some new techniques for me were: shooting in very poorly-lit locations, shooting long exposures, and using ND filters. I also learned new Photoshop techniques that make pictures pop out more. Overall, the tour was an exciting experience and I have greatly benefited from it. I am not a tourist. I am a photographer!

Our InScape photo tour of New Zealand definitely exceeded our expectations. Martin and Jan were excellent guides, everything was well coordinated and they even arranged for the weather to cooperate! In addition to spectacular scenery and shooting locations, their attention and patience assured that we were all better photographers by the trip’s end. Not to mention, it was a lot of fun!

We were very satisfied with all aspects and plan to book another tour with InScape.

Whether you are a novice or seasoned photographer, you will definitely capture plenty of great photographs and expand your skillset as a photographer. He is an all around fabulous guy who is an outstanding photographer, knowledgeable guide, and patient teacher. He is the real deal and highly recommended.

My husband and I went on Martin’s 9-day tour of the Czech Republic and had the best time. The tour was thoughtfully assembled, as it provided the opportunity a wide range of subjects from modern and historical cityscapes, landscapes, abstract patterns, and wildlife. The accommodations and dining were well chosen, and Martin always fostered a friendly and collegial vibe. He not only ensured that you captured great shots, but he also taught the how composition, vision, camera settings and processing all contribute to a good image. And that knowledge is even more valuable than the photos from the trip.

Martin was always willing to answer questions or help with technical difficulties. He has the patience of a saint. The trip exceeded our expectations and we hope to tour with him again.

As an experienced traveler and photographer but with little time available, what I look for is to be in the right place at the right time. With Martin I found exactly that…and even more! The trip was perfectly organized. Martin is a nice person all round, a first rate photographer and knows every corner of his country, the best season and the best time to photograph it.

In my group there were also less experienced people and I could appreciate how patient and kind was Martin in offering his expert help and answering all kind of questions. He cares that you become a better photographer.

Thanks for everything, I had a great time and a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to do another trip with you! 🙂

Inscape Photo Tours provided one fantastic trip. Jan and Martin took us to the beauty of Iceland and we spent twelve days with ourselves and our camera shutter’s being busy catching the world thru their eyes.  No matter what your experience level or equipment that you brought, they could both help you.  Trip more than met my expectations.  Personally, before this trip I primarily took pictures of birds and wildlife.  Taking pictures of landscape and understanding Martin and Jan’s desire to create composition in your picture was ‘eye opening’ for me. I’m truly glad I went on this trip.  At the age of 72 I was able to keep up with the ‘group’ and they pushed us to have as many experiences with our camera as possible.  My time with my camera will be better, in the future, because of what I learned and experienced with Inscape during this trip.

This Photo Tour with Martin was absolutely great! We did this in autumn, the colors of the fields and the woods were stunning. Under Martin’s guidance, I took incredible photographs, I never thought I would ever be able to shoot such beautiful pictures. Not only the autumn colors, the beautiful sights in Prague, Telc, and Cesky Krumlov, and Martin’s insightful photography advice made the tour a great success for me. A highlight was the (photographic of course) shooting of owls, a new experience, that also resulted in beautiful images.

Everything was very well organized, we stayed in excellent lodgings, and even had the occasion to taste Czech wines (which were excellent). Martin is an incredibly nice person, very patient and always in a good mood. I hope to join him on a photo tour again in the future. Thanks, Martin!

My sister and I joined Martin’s trip to the Lofoten Islands to photograph the northern lights. The entire trip was very well organized – lodging, transportation, and some meals taken care of just as described, and the accommodations were all very nice.

The locations we visited were amazing and we got beautiful photos, including photos of the aurora! We really appreciated Martin’s local knowledge that allowed us to find the best locations for shooting depending on light and weather. One thing that made this trip extra-special was the one-on-one post-processing that Martin provided to help us organize and edit the many photos we were taking. I came home from the trip with amazing photos and an improved understanding of how to work with lightroom and photoshop to get the most out of those photos. I also really appreciated the small group setting and the amount of communication that Martin provided. We always knew what the plan was and what factors might cause us to re-evaluate the plan, such as weather. The whole group was able to provide input on what kind of photos we wanted to take and what techniques we were interested in learning about.

Overall an incredible trip and a great opportunity to improve my photography skills!

I stumbled across Inscape Photo Tours on one of my many internet searches – and am I ever thrilled that I did! Right from the first contact by email with my initial enquiry, Martin was attentive and helpful answering all of my many questions. And my experience on the tour itself was no different. The tour was extremely well organised and ran absolutely smoothly. I have no doubt about how much work was put in behind the scenes by Martin and his team to make sure things went according to plan – and everything did – making the tour an absolute pleasure to be a part of.

Not only did I learn an enormous amount about landscape photography and editing techniques under Martin’s guidance – I had an absolute blast! (Made even better by the awesome group I was on tour with:-). I would have no hesitation recommending Inscape Photo Tours to both beginner and experienced photographers alike – and I for one will definitely book another tour with Inscape.

Thank you Inscape!

tours in photo

Let me start off by saying that I learned so much from Martin of Inscape Photo Tours. I’ve been shooting landscapes for well over 10 years and have watched dozens of YouTube videos on landscape photography. But there is no substitute for going on a photo shoot with a knowledgeable and experienced photo guide.

I am well versed in the technicalities of my Nikon D850 but I’m lacking in the nuance of composition. I always thought that I had no control over the placement of elements in my viewfinder. Martin taught me otherwise. By making minor adjustments in position and/or camera settings, I was able to come away with some amazing photographs that were balanced and harmonious.

Regardless of you experience level (novice through advanced), Martin will work with you to get that compelling photograph. He will teach you how to look for leading lines, patterns, colors, and how to frame that shot. He’s very patient, he’s hands-on, and he’ll even work with you during post processing. I highly recommend Inscape Photo Tours with Martin Bišof. You will not be disappointed.

It was a photography trip for the history books!  Each day was filled with portfolio worthy images, a perfect combination of destination, subject, lighting and composition.  Martin and Jan provided amazing guidance both at location and in post-editing to help me take the best images ever.  The trip was filled with adventure, laughs and thrills.  The memories and friendships our entire group made will last a lifetime.   I’m looking forward to many more photographic adventures with Inscape Photo!

tours in photo

What an incredible tour! I was able to get the most iconic shots I’ve been after for years. Each day was extremely well organized so that we were able to best make use of the light and location. Even when the weather wasn’t cooperating, there were contingency plans on what best to shoot so that no time was ever wasted.

Martin and Jan’s expertise and friendliness was over the top. Their unique ability to provide individual instruction on both composition and editing to photographers of various levels of experience was amazing. I’m thrilled having finished this photo tour with dozens of pictures I’m proud to hang on the wall and can’t wait to sign up for the next trip!

Thanks Inscape!!!

Martin Is absolutely fantastic as a photographer tour guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the Czech Republic and therefore was able to take me to those great out of the way places I would never find on my own.

Martin’s goal was always for me to get the shot and he was extremely helpful when I had issues with some of my camera settings, even though he shoots Canon and I shoot Nikon. Martin is very talented, pleasant, and well organized. It was a joy to spend the week photographing with him and I intend to make a return trip during the Fall of 2024.

tours in photo

The Lofted Photo Tour was not on my ‘bucket list’, but having gone I would recommend ALL make this trip sometime with Martin. At 74 years of age, I was the oldest on the trip. I joined my brother and sister-in-law and left with more photograph memories than I could imagine. From the minute we got to Norway, our trip began with building a memory…..one day at a time. Martin and Pedro had photography planned before we got to our hotel room. They monitored the weather and times to view the Northern Lights. We were told from beginning to the end of the tour, what to bring for warm clothing, weather, lens, shoes, jacket, etc.. If the weather changed, we changed with it to do post-processing or learn ways to improve our picture taking.

Many years ago I made up my mind to ‘find people doing and going where I want to go in life and grow old with them’. This was my third trip with Inscape and I can hardly wait for the next. You don’t need a large group to have a BIG memory. Martin keeps the size of the group at a size that you feel that you are treated personally with all your questions and desire to learn.

tours in photo

The October Czech Republic photo tour was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Martin is an exceptional photographer and understands how to communicate his skills in an easy-going and gentle way. He also makes sure to take care of the needs of his clients, ranging from airport/train station transportation to choosing comfortable and clean accommodations. During our photo shoots, Martin made sure to give each participant guidance and help with any questions regarding camera use or settings. He is also exacting on composition and emphasized how even very small changes to composition can improve an image significantly. Within Prague, Martin took us to locations where we could get both iconic shots and lesser known but excellent and interesting photos as well. As we ventured to other locations, we were given opportunities to shoot unusual and scenic landscapes, beautiful small towns, a castle with its lovely grounds, and owls and birds of prey. Martin encouraged us to use lines and curves within a scene as elements of composition and stressed the power of simplicity. The opportunity to photograph owls and a falcon was simply amazing and was my favorite part of the tour.

For the post-processing sessions, Martin preferred to work with each of us one-on-one. This approach allowed for personalized instruction and editing of a selection of each client’s photos. Other group members were welcome to observe.

On the Czech Republic tour, there is a maximum of five clients, which keeps the group small and allows each of us time with Martin. Our group consisted of people from four continents and it was a joy to get to know each of them. We all traveled well together, enjoyed sharing photos, and had interesting and fun discussions. I would highly recommend Inscape Photo Tours. Martin’s dedication to each photographer’s positive experience is evident. His primary intention is for photographers to be provided with the opportunity and guidance that will result in excellent photographs. It was a real pleasure to have such a conscientious and personable guide. Thank you for the exceptional experience!

If we decided to use the JR Pass and travel by Shinkansen bullet train, we not will have the same freedom.

Well-used and complete photography tour, with good photography scenes

The spring tour through Japan was absolutely full of wonderful photographic opportunities and great camaraderie. With only four participants we all got to know each other well and got to see the most beautiful sites. Eduardo was easy-going with good humour (and excellent music taste) and tremendous photographic experience. The accommodations were excellent and this has to be the best value Japan Cherry Blossoms tour on the market.

' src=

This Japan tour was not only well organized, but also a lot of fun. We had a great group of photographers with a lot of camaraderie and humor visiting great sites, we would never have found without Eduardo’s fine insight. Highly recommended!

' src=

PhotoWorldTour’s JapanSakura tour was both a highlight and a sustained happy pill. In the course of a few days, we traveled in Spanish through large parts of Japan’s most beautiful areas. Eduardo – as well as his lucky mascot Missifou – is the best tour guide I’ve had. Relaxed, funny and so democratically oriented that we called him “our glorious leader” without being the least bit ironic. We stayed in good hotels and got up before sunrise to get the best possible photos. Then a small pause before the next image sequence..etc. Collectively, we covered larger parts of central Japan in a way that we certainly wouldn’t have been able to do without his knowledge. This was fun, simply 🌹

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

VDNKh

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Of course, pictures of the Kremlin shot from the Red Square are no doubt iconic and must-have, but they are taken by thousands of tourists every day and can hardly make a wow-effect on your friends on Instagram and other social networks.

Another problem with shooting from Red Square is that the photos do not fully represent the scale of the medieval fortress of Kremlin. So, you need to make some steps further and higher to catch the right shot. You’ll be surprised by the fact that the panoramic views of the Kremlin are pretty easy to get. We have four hints for you: Zaryadie, Ritz Carlton, Patriarch bridge, and Radisson riverboat.

If you want to not only make beautiful photos but also to learn something interesting about the history of Russia, we recommend an individual tour of the Kremlin. You can order it online here .

First, go to Zaryadye, which is located right next to the Red Square, behind the St Basil’s Cathedral, on the closest Moscow river bank. The most impressive views over the Kremlin are unfolded from the so-called Flying bridge of Zaryadye and Glass Dome building in the back part of the park.

Zaryadye is the new place of attraction in Moscow. It’s a landscape park, opened in September 2017 by the Moscow government on the hill where the giant soviet hotel ‘Rossiya’ located before its demolition in the early 2000-s. As a bonus, you’ll get an incredible view over one of Stalin’s skyscrapers, located on the opposite bank of Moscow river — the so-called Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya, used as a residence of many Russian famous people and officials.

  • The roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel

This option is ok only in case if you’re ready to pay the average bar bill of over 2500 rubles (about $40). Visit the O2 Lounge Bar on the roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where all the global celebrities take their Moscow pictures, from Angelina Jolie to Robert Downey Jr.

But such photo investments seem to pay off immediately. The deck of the bar makes an excellent panorama point for the Kremlin walls and towers, the Historical Museum, the Great Kremlin Palace, and the Kremlin cathedrals. All these landmarks are not too far away, which makes them perfectly recognizable, even in the background.

  • The Radisson riverboat

tours in photo

This hint will be useful in case you’re traveling to Moscow in the cold season. River transportation in Moscow doesn't stop in winter. Many enclosed and heated tourist yachts with panoramic windows and ice-breaking equipment can be found in the Moscow River. For instance, one of the most recognizable is the flotilla Radisson.

Their route goes past all the main sights of pre-revolutionary and Soviet Moscow – from Stalin's skyscrapers (Ukraina hotel and Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya) to the Kremlin and the Novodevichy Convent. It is possible to go out to the open deck and take photos of you and your family or friends against a backdrop of the city’s lights and their reflection in the river. The cruise lasts 2.5 hours. You can book a tour with a car roundtrip transfer from your hotel to the pier and back: book online here

  • Patriarch bridge

tours in photo

The bridge is located further from the Kremlin, than Zaryadye or Ritz Carlton, so the Kremlin walls on your photos will look smaller. The brighter side of walking through the bridge is that you can do more fabulous pics of the Moscow river and city center landscapes. The Moscow river and the pretty recognizable giant statue of Peter the Great are ideally viewed from the bridge. Be prepared that it’s a famous and popular pedestrian area for tourists all over the world so the bridge may be crowded.

Also, the bridge is a part of a long promenade which leads from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral through the Balchug island to the opposite bank of the Moscow River, where another pedestrian area — Museon embankment — is ready to joy you with its cafes, cozy lawns and impressive views over the river flow, ducks and boats.

  • Moscow City

tours in photo

The best spot to shoot the famous Moscow business downtown is located on the Taras Shevchenko embankment. To get there you need to come to the metro stations Vystavochnaya or Delovoi Tsentr, then go to the Bagration bridge (use the metro navigation, the path is tricky), cross the bridge — and voilà! You’ve reached the best spot for shooting, posing, sending selfies, and Instagramming.

  • Ponds and orangeries

tours in photo

There are two ponds in Moscow, that deserve your attention in summer: the Chistye ponds (actually there is only one pond, but it’s worth it) and the pond in Gorky Park, which is full of small boats and catamarans. Both lakes are lost between the green alleys and are drowning in all the shades of green. Those are the perfect spots to catch the moment of peace amid the madness of big city life.

Cat Owner Creates Purr-fect Taylor Swift Eras Tour Costumes for Her 4-Legged Swiftie

Cindy Park was inspired by the singer's shimmer and shine

Cindy Park and her cat are both Swifties.

“As soon as he hears Taylor Swift songs he gets all excited," Park says of her 9-year-old rescue, Badger.

Park loved watching Swift's Eras Tour concert : “it’s a tour de force,” she says. But the outfits in particular caught her eye — and the eyes of her four-legged friend, too.

“I was like, 'Oh my God, these costumes are amazing. They're beautiful. I bet you that Badger could rock those.' And then I thought, 'How can I make these?' " she recalls. "And obviously, there's nothing out there for cats."

So Park, 53, started piecing together costumes and bedazzling and creating originals until she had a matching tour wardrobe that she shares on Instagram at @badger.dot. ( She updates and adds looks as Swift does. )

Yes, treats are involved in the photography process, but “you can’t force cats to do anything they don’t want to do,” Park says.

The cat loves playing dress-up so much, he even brings Park the costumes and helps put them on.

“He'll lift his paw up to put through the armhole, and then he'll put the other paw up and push it through the armhole himself," says Park, managing director of a FinTech firm in Portland, Oregon.

In total, Park has nine cats. (Swift herself has three .)

“They’re all rescues and foster fails,” she says. But Badger and another cat, Ellie, are the two most fashionable felines. “They love the attention,” she says. “But Badger, he poses. You can't make a cat just sit there and pose like that."

He even starts purring and drooling when it's time for their costumed photo shoots — especially those inspired by the Eras Tour.

“He recognizes Taylor's songs now,” Park adds. “It's Mommy and Badger bonding moments. I love it.”

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Russia’s top diplomat pledged help and military assistance while on a whirlwind tour of several countries in Africa’s sub-Saharan region of Sahel this week, as Moscow seeks to grow its influence in the restive, mineral-rich section of the continent.

Russia is emerging as the security partner of choice for a growing number of African governments in the region, displacing traditional allies like France and the United States. Sergey Lavrov, who has made several trips to Africa in recent years, this week stopped in Guinea, the Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso and Chad.

Moscow has aggressively expanded its military cooperation with African nations by using the private security company Wagner and its likely successor, Africa Corps , with Russian mercenaries taking up roles from protecting African leaders to helping states fight extremists.

The Polish Institute of International Affairs said in a study this month that in “creating the Africa Corps, Russia took an assertive approach to expand its military presence in Africa.

Moscow is also seeking political support, or at least neutrality, from many of Africa’s 54 countries over its invasion of Ukraine. African nations make up the largest voting bloc at the United Nations and have been more divided than any other group on General Assembly resolutions criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Russia-linked entities also spread disinformation to undermine ties between African states and the West, the Africa Center For Strategic Studies, an academic institution within the U.S. Department of Defense, wrote in a March report. Moscow has been “sponsoring 80 documented campaigns, targeting more than 22 countries,” it said.

Here’s a look at how Russia is expanding its influence in Africa.

WHY ARE AFRICAN NATIONS TURNING TO RUSSIA?

Russia has taken advantage of political unrest and discontent in coup-hit nations, capitalizing on popular frustration and anger with former colonial power France. Military coups have ousted governments seen close to France and the West and doing little to alleviate grinding poverty, unemployment and other hardships.

Russia offers security assistance without interfering in politics, making it an appealing partner in places like Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso , all ruled by military juntas that seized power in recent years. In return, Moscow seeks access to minerals and other contracts.

Violence linked to extremists allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group has been on the rise in Sahel for years, despite efforts by France, the U.S. and other Western allies to help fight the jihadi groups there. In 2013, France launched a near decade long operation in Mali to help fight militants , which expanded to Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad. The operation ended nine years later but the conflict did not, contributing to anger with the West.

The U.S. has further lost its footing with key allies for forcing issues — including democracy or human rights — that many African states see as hypocrisy, given Washington’s close ties to some autocratic leaders elsewhere.

While the West may pressure African coup leaders over democracy and other issues, Russia doesn’t meddle in domestic affairs, Rida Lyammouri, a senior fellow at the Policy Center for the New South, told The Associated Press.

WHAT IS RUSSIA’S INTEREST IN AFRICAN COUNTRIES?

Africa is rich in minerals, oil and other resources, which come with political and legal challenges. Its resources are increasingly central to economic and national security, such as cobalt, which is used in electronics like mobile phones, or lithium, which is used in batteries.

Russia has thrived in countries where governance is limited, and has signing mining deals through companies it controls. An EU parliament study showed that Russia secured access to gold and diamonds in the Central African Republic, cobalt in Congo, gold and oil in Sudan, chromite in Madagascar, platinum and diamonds in Zimbabwe, and uranium in Namibia.

The U.S. based non-profit Democracy 21 group said in an analysis last December that Wagner and Russia may have made about $2.5 billion through the African gold trade alone since invading Ukraine in February 2022.

Though Russia is increasingly a partner to African countries in the oil and mining sector, it lags far behind as an overall trading partner. For example, data by the International Monetary shows less than 1% of Africa’s exports go to Russia, compared with 33% to the European Union.

WHERE DO RUSSIAN CONTRACTORS OPERATE IN AFRICA?

The first reports of Wagner mercenaries in Africa emerged in late 2017, when the group was deployed to Sudan to provide support to then-President Omar al-Bashir, in exchange for gold mining concessions. Wagner’s presence soon expanded to other African countries.

In 2018, Russian contractors showed up to back powerful commander Khalifa Hifter in eastern Libya who was battling militants. They also helped Hifter in his failed attempt to seize the capital of Tripoli a year later.

In the Central African Republic, Russian mercenaries have been providing security since in 2018 and in return have gained access to some of the country’s gold and diamond mines.

Coups in Mali in 2020 and 2021, in Burkina Faso in 2022 and in Niger in 2023, brought military juntas critical of the West to power. All three eventually ordered French and other Western forces out, and instead turned to Russia for military support.

Niger ordered the U.S. to withdraw its troops and close its multimillion dollar flagship investment in a sprawling military and spy base in Agadez earlier this year, after a meeting with a U.S. delegation ended poorly. The decision has upended U.S. counterinsurgency operations in Africa’s Sahel.

Weeks later, Russian trainers arrived in Niger with new defense equipment .
