Overview [ edit ]

Smash Tour plays as a board game, in which players use Mii characters to move around the board. There are three different boards - small, normal, and big - and every game can be set to last for 15 to 25 turns. The goal is to move around the board and collect powerups and fighters, who will face off in a final battle. If customizations are turned on, the characters may possess custom special moves, indicated by the number 1, 2, or 3 on the character's icon.

At the game's start, each player is given two random characters. At the beginning of each turn but the first, each player receives a random item, and may then choose to use any item they have. Then a spinner starts moving, and after stopping it, the player will be able to move by the number of spaces indicated, which ranges from 1 to 6 in normal conditions: it is possible to change direction at every crossroad.

By moving around the board, players can collect powerups, which raise their characters' stats; items, which possess various effects; and playable fighters, which will be put into use during battles: the characters are used in the order they were obtained. Each player may hold up to ten characters and four items.

Battles are initiated by landing on the same space as another player or landing on a battle space. At the beginning of a battle, a player may select an item to use, and will then face the others. There are several types of battles: only specific items may appear, the players are put in a specific state, or instead of a battle, a round of Home-Run Contest or Target Blast might play. The winner will receive a prize shown before the battle, which is always an item plus sometimes a character: in the case of a team battle, the item will be given to all the members of the winning team. If a player gets KO'd, they will lose their current fighter: the last character KO'd will be given to the player who defeated them. After the battle, any player who shares a space with the player who KO'd them will be launched away, possibly dropping some of their characters.

During gameplay, random events can occur: they range from non-playable characters roaming the board and giving bonuses of some kind to players who touch them, to alterations of the map, to boss battles.

When the turn counter runs out, the board phase of the game ends and the announcer will call out "GAME!". The players' stats are shown, and some further bonuses may be awarded if some special conditions are met:

  • Distance Traveled : each player's Speed attribute increases based on the number of spaces crossed.
  • Trophies Used : each player's Arms attribute increases based on the number of trophies used.
  • Lucky 7 : stats which include a 7 are increased.
  • Launched Ace : the player(s) who got launched the most get one more character.
  • Launching Ace : the player(s) who launched the most opponents get an increase in their highest stats.
  • Booby Prize : the player(s) with the least characters get a bonus character, if they have no characters or every other player has at least two more characters.

The winner is then determined by a special timed stock battle that always takes place on the stage Battlefield . Every fighter that the player has collected counts as one stock; once a fighter is defeated, the player's next fighter enters the field until they have no fighters left, a concept that was carried over to Squad Strike . The winner is always decided by KO count: in other words, being the last player standing does not necessarily equate to victory. In the case of a tie, the winner is decided by a Sudden Death finale between the last fighters used.

After the game ends, several trophies, equipment items, Mii costumes, custom special moves , gold , and Crazy Orders passes may be received.

Space types [ edit ]

  • Fighter Space : a collectible character may appear here.
  • Checkpoint : touching it awards the correspondent symbol to the player, as well as a stat boost. Collecting all five symbols gives a player a checkpoint bonus, similar to the Fortune Street series of games.
  • Stat Boost Space : a player's stats may be raised, lowered, or swapped with one another. The effects become stronger when approaching the game's end.
  • Warp Space : contains a pipe which warps the player to another pipe with the same color in another space on the map.
  • Battle Space : automatically starts a battle at the end of the turn. Only appears on the big map.

Additionally, powerups and items may appear on any empty normal space.

Possible Fighters [ edit ]

Every fighter aside from the Mii Fighters can appear on the board, and if custom fighters are turned on, there are preset alternate costumes for each of the custom movesets. Most of the costumes for Moveset 2 are the costumes on the Alternate fighter trophies. The same applies to the 3DS's versions of the Alternate fighter trophies' costumes for Moveset 3. The custom moves in these sets always match their number with the costume number, so moveset 1 is always 1111, moveset 2 is always 2222 and moveset 3 is always 3333.

Tour items [ edit ]

smash tour wii u

Items take the form of trophies from the game. The following is a list of known items and their effects in Smash Tour. There are red, blue, and green items, with red items being used in battle, blue items being used on the game board, and green items being usable in both.

Stat boosts [ edit ]

The following items can be found throughout the game board. Each item has its own use, and will help the player in some way during the subsequent fights. Additionally, every item can be found in different sizes, which alters how much of each stat will be boosted. There is a limit of 1000 points for each category.

Enemies [ edit ]

The following is a list of all known enemies on the board that involve random events and their effects, if known. Some events begin boss battles, granting stat boosts to the player who defeats it. If they fail to defeat this boss, it will reappear elsewhere on the map.

List of battle types [ edit ]

Most of these matches may also be team battles. If so, they will have "Team" at the start of the match name.

Challenges [ edit ]

  • Starting the final battle with 10 characters awards the Flying Man trophy.
  • Getting three or more checkpoint bonuses awards the Bionis trophy.
  • Defeating 12 or more fighters in a single game awards a Crazy Orders pass.
  • Getting first place in 5 or more battles in a single game awards 2000 G .
  • Using 18 or more items in a single game awards the Riki trophy.
  • Dealing the final blow to a boss awards the Ridley trophy.
  • Recovering stolen stat boosts from a Metroid awards the Vs. Parasite Queen music.
  • Playing all the three maps awards the Pac-Land stage .
  • Bumping into an enemy awards the Nabbit trophy.
  • Bumping into every other player in a single game awards the Mecha Suit Mii outfit .

Trivia [ edit ]

  • Nabbit and Riki use the same black hole effect graphic.
  • When Ridley appears, Vs. Ridley is used.
  • When Metal Face appears, You Will Know Our Names is used.
  • When the Yellow Devil appears, Mega Man 2 Medley is used.
  • If in a battle, one player has at least one fighter and the others don't have any, the battle ends automatically as soon as it starts, being a single person match . This also happens if players use the Latias & Latios item to put all fighters on the same team.
  • If a player reflects a Bus to the City trophy by using a Proto Man, all players are called to the Proto Man user's space.
  • If Mew is summoned during any Smash Tour battle, it will drop absolutely nothing.
  • Interestingly, if Dr. Mario is collected, he will say "Let's-a go", normally only said by Mario .
  • When Kirby is collected, he will say "Hi" that resembles an unused version from Brawl , and consequently its Smash 64 and Melee versions. This variant is not used otherwise, however, the file exists in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , alongside his unused voice clips for copying Palutena 's Explosive Flame and Heavenly Light .
  • If no input is given by human players, the game will progress forward by itself. The only exceptions to this are the Smash Tour Home-Run Contest and Target Blast minigames, both will wait for human input before progressing. This trick allows one to get rewards and complete challenges from Smash Tour without having to actually play. The 'human player'-computer will collect Checkpoint Bonuses and fighters, chase the Metroid and Nabbit , and generally avoid other players.
  • In a Team Battle, it is possible to use the Latias & Latios item to make it a 3 VS 1 match.
  • In a boss battle, the DK Barrel will be temporarily disabled.
  • When a match begins, the type of battle will be displayed at the top-left corner. This shows up in the pause screen and even in snapshots. This does not occur in the final match.
  • Fighters that are Blast KO'd during the Final Battle will, for some reason, never finish their KO sounds unless they are the final fighter the player has.
  • The Ghosts item contains the game title Luigi's Mansion in their name despite there not being any other items named, "Ghosts." This is likely a leftover from their trophy, where they share the name with the Ghosts from PAC-MAN (along with Find Mii in the Nintendo 3DS version).

Smash Tour

Smash Tour (Japanese:ワールドスマッシュ Wārudosumasshu) is a mode exclusively in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U . It is a board game-like mode similar to Mario Party. It was made to compensate the exclusivity of Smash Run on the Nintendo 3DS version, and thus for adding yet more variety for both versions.

Overview [ ]

The players start selecting the board's size, if the Custom Moves will be used or not, and the number of turns. There are three sizes for boards:

Boards (Smash Tour)

  • Small : A small board that resembles the Super Smash Bros. series symbol.
  • Normal : A board that resembles a Pokéball .
  • Big : A giant-sized board that resembles somewhat of a plane.

Each player starts off with two randomly selected fighters.

All the players move at once, and they control the direction they move in, meaning that competition to get certain pieces is raised much higher. Instead of pieces, there are Miis to move around the stage. As the player walks across the board, they can collect stat boosts, items, and fighters. The checkpoints will also upgrade them, and characters will get a large powerup boost if they visit all five checkpoints.

When at least 2 Miis collide with each other on the same space or when a player lands on a "Smash space" (red, fiery space), all players will be forced to battle with one of the characters they have collected in a random type of battle. (Sometimes, it's not even a battle; It can be a game from Stadium mode.)

If a player does not have any fighters, they can't participate in the match. Players can also choose to opt out of the battle and have a CPU control their character. If Custom Moves are turned on, then the characters will receive a random set of moves, shown by a number which goes from 1 to 3. After winning, the player will receive the rewarding item and the fighter from the opponent who placed second. If a player does not emerge victorious after one minute, the player with the most KOs wins the match. If the winning player is on a space that their opponent is on, the opponent will get launched. However, if the launched opponent lands on a space with an item, they get that item, meaning it can be beneficial.

Players can also use items. They can be used on the board or during a smash battle, but most of the time, items are restricted to be used at specific times. Players choose one item to use before every turn or battle by flicking the control stick in the direction their item is at on the circle, so as to keep it secret from other players. If you chose an item that will affect a specific player, you must then choose the opponent to use it on by the same method. After everyone has chosen their items, their selections will be revealed right before the turn or battle starts.

Sometimes, random events will happen on the board, such as Koffing obscuring the entire board for one turn.

After the last turn, bonus stat boosts are given to players who have achieved certain goals. Then the final battle will start, where every player will fight with the stat boosts and characters they've acquired. The final battle is a 4-minute Stock Battle on Battlefield , but the stock is replaced with all the fighters collected through the game. The character who wins is not the one with the most stock at the end, however, but the one with the most KOs.

Smash Tour is a mode exclusive to Wii U. It is similar to various Mario Party games. In the beginning, players or CPUs select a Mii. The goal is to collect fighters and increase their stats on a board to prepare for the final battle. Players use a spinner to move and can use items to help themselves or hinder their opponents. Sometimes, players run into each other, which causes a battle. Most of the time, the winner of the battle gets the fighter from the one in second place, while everyone else loses the fighter they used. Sometimes, events that drastically change the gameplay occur. After a certain amount of rounds, players use these characters and stats and proceed to the final battle.

  • 2 Characters
  • 8 Final Battle

Movement [ edit ]

As mentioned above, players use a spinner to move. Some items allow players to move better. When players travel across the board, they collect fighters and stats to use for the final battle. It is a good idea to move right when the spinner stops to get the stats and fighters sooner than others.

Characters [ edit ]

Unlike Smash Run, players can not pick their own characters. Instead, they are represented by a Mii, which collects characters for a final battle. The characters players have may change depending on if they win or lose battles. Fighters are needed to be in matches, excluding the final battle. Also, except for the final battle, players can have a CPU control a fighter, which is great for people who play poorly with this character. Overall, since players can not pick their own characters, having skill with all fighters (even the "poor" ones) is necessary (see the character guides for tips).

Boards [ edit ]

There are three sizes of boards to choose from. The small one looks like the Smash Ball. The normal one looks like a soccer ball. The big one resembles a bullet. Also, take note that the small board will likely cause the most battles, while the big board will likely cause the least battles.

Stats [ edit ]

There are six types of stat boosts players can collect. Each are shown in various sizes, which affect how much is added. Also, take note that there is a maximum of 1000 points for a stat boost, so once you reach that, find other stat boosts to collect. These are the following stat boosts:

  • Speed : This green icon resembles a boot. It increases walking, running, and air speed. It is very useful since it allows players to get into the game quickly.
  • Jump : The yellow icon looks like a wing. It allows fighters to jump higher. Unless if you have fighters with poor recovery (i.e.: Little Mac), it is not that necessary.
  • Attack : This orange icon resembles a boxing glove. It increases the power of standard attacks. This is an important stat since damaging foes is the key to knocking them back far.
  • Special : The red icon resembles a blast icon. It increases the power of special attacks. This is also useful, especially if a fighter's main KO moves are his or her special moves.
  • Arms : The purple icon looks like a hammer. It increases the power of items that are thrown. This is an okay item, but go for it if you are good at spacing opponents with items.
  • Defense : This blue icon looks like a shield. The fighters are able to survive longer. The stat boost is one of the best stat boosts to collect, since it allows fighters to survive even at high percentages.

Items [ edit ]

There are a variety of items used in Smash Tour that represent various Nintendo games. Red items are used in battle, blue items are used on the board, and green items, which can be used both on the board and in battle, can redirect or reflect the item effects.

Events [ edit ]

There are many events that could randomly happen in Smash Tour. Some reward stats when run into. Other events change the board layout. Three of them, Metal Face, Ridley, and Yellow Devil, can even cause boss battles that rewards the player who defeated them.

Battle [ edit ]

If a player runs into another player, then a battle is initiated. There are various battle types with rewards. Players can even have CPUs use fighters in these battles. In standard battles, the one in first place gets the fighter in second place. Everyone else loses their fighters. However, if multiple people survive to the end, then they get to keep the fighters. Home-Run Contest and Target Blast can also happen as rounds. Unlike the rest of the battles, the ones who didn't win do not lose fighters.

Final Battle [ edit ]

After a set amount of turns, the Final Battle happens. Some bonuses increase stats before the actual battle. The battle is basically a combination between a timed and a stock match; whoever defeats the most opponents wins, but running out of characters keeps you out for the rest of the match. The battle always takes place in Battlefield, and there are various items used. After the final battle, the system gets a lot of trophies, custom gear, coins, and custom parts even if the CPUs win.

Smash Bros. Wii U: Smash Tour Guide

Image of Synzer

Super Smash Bros. Wii U has many more features than the 3DS version. It does have a game mode similar to Smash Run, though. Both involve gathering stat points for a final battle. That’s where the similarities end as Smash Tour has a board game, Mario Party feel to it.

Smash Tour look pretty chaotic and random at first, but it isn’t once you get the hang of it. Like a game of Mario Party or Mario Kart , random things can happen, so you have to be prepared for anything.

This guide will go over everything you need to know about Smash Tour including:

  • Smash Tour Basics – How to play and what the goal is.
  • Smash Tour Tips – Tips to help you win at Smash Tour.

Smash Tour Basics

The object of Smash Tour is to collect as many fighters as you can and gather stat boosts for a final battle. You do this by rolling a number, similar to Mario Party , and move around the board.

Seems simple enough, but there is lot on the board and things  your opponents can do to make life difficult.

There are 3 boards to choose from and you can set how many turns you want to play, from 15-25 . When you select one, you’ll have to pick which Mii you want to play as. This has no effect on the gameplay because you’ll only use the fighters you pick up on the board.

Once you start the game, you’ll be put on a board with 3 other players. There are several spaces and icons you’ll see.

  • Item Spaces – These spaces can have stat boost items, or one of many Smash Tour items. I’ll go over those later.
  • Checkpoints – Each space gives you a stat boost. Passing over all 5 gives you a bigger boost.
  • Each time you do this is called a lap and you can start getting all 5 again as many times as you want.
  • Warp Space – This instantly warps to another warp space on the board.
  • Stat Boost Space – This space changes your stats.
  • Battle Space – Stopping here goes into a battle.
  • Fighter Space – Getting to this space gives you the fighter shown.

If you land on the same space as another player, you’ll start a fight. If you win, you’ll launch them away to another space. You also steal the fighter of the person in 2nd place and everyone else loses their fighter to the board.

smash tour wii u

First let me explain each stat.

  • Speed – This increases your movement speed in combat. It has a green boot icon.
  • Jump – Increases jump height in combat . Yellow wing icon.
  • Attack – Increases damage of normal attacks, including smash attacks. Orange glove icon.
  • Special – Increases damage and effectiveness of Special attacks in combat. Red burst icon.
  • Arms – Increases damage from throws and items. Purple hammer icon.
  • Defense – Decreases damage you take. Blue shield icon.
  • All – Increases all stats. Gold star icon.

Your goal is to get these stats, particularly the attack and defense stats, a high as you can to make winning the final battle easier.

  • Board items – Items that affect moving on the board. They do things like double your roll, attract nearby items to you, and launch nearby opponents away.
  • Battle Items – These are items used during a battle. They do things like let you start with an item and cause another player to start with high damage taken.
  • General Items – These are collection items like trophies and customization items.

Smash Tour Tips

You can just go into Smash Tour moving around and random if you want and hope for the best, OR you can have a plan.

One thing I want to point out is that you will get a lot of items during Smash Tour, even if you don’t go out of your way to get them.

One way to win is by focusing on battle items and fighting others .

  • Gather any battle items you find to make fights go in your favor, then try to land on someone to fight every turn.
  • If players run out of fighters, they cannot take part in fights .
  • Fight and win enough, and nobody will have enough fighters to beat you.

Another method is to focus on board items and getting characters on the board.

smash tour wii u

You also get bonuses at the end for things like launching the most people and landing on a certain space the most.

  • Aim for any characters you see, and try to hit every checkpoint to complete laps.
  • Gather board items to get you around the board fast so you can get more stat boosts and fighters.
  • Gathering a large pool of fighters and getting high stats will make the final battle very easy.

That’s it for my Smash Tour Guide for Super Smash Bros. Wii U . Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or suggestions. Please visit my Beginner’s Guide and New Features  for help with anything else.

The game starts with each player getting 2 fighters and then rolling a number from 1-6 at the same time. The spinner is not randomized. Every turn after that has new items placed on the board (stat boosts, fighters or tour items) and then giving each player a tour item. Then, each player gets the chance to use a blue tour item. Then, the players spin again.

During any turn, if the player collides with another (or lands on a battle space in the Big Map), a battle will initiate. The matches last 60 seconds (excluding stadium events) on a stage that is picked randomly with one of the type of battles shown below. The fighter is randomly chosen from the pool of fighters they've collected and then they can choose a red tour item. Players KO'd lose that fighter and the winning player gets the loser's fighter.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

smash tour wii u

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the Wii U version of the fourth installment of the Super Smash Bros. series and was developed by Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco Games . [3] While this game and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS were developed simultaneously, the Nintendo 3DS version launched earlier due to its earlier completion of development.

Like with most other Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software titles, this title can be purchased at retail stores and could be purchased from the Nintendo eShop until March 27, 2023, with the digital version requiring 15,700 MB (approx. 15.3 GB) of memory to be installed. Due to the amount of space that it requires, standard set Wii U consoles cannot download this title without an external storage device, but deluxe set Wii U consoles can.

The game could be played over Nintendo Network , but the service was terminated on April 8, 2024, making the game no longer playable online. [4] [5]

A follow-up title for the Nintendo Switch , Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , was released four years after Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on December 7, 2018.

Gameplay [ edit ]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U title screen

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U have some similarities and differences from Super Smash Bros. Brawl , as well as differences between the two versions. Final Smashes and Footstool Jumping make a return, while the "tripping" mechanic has been removed. [6] The pace of battles has also been stated to be in between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl .

Both games have the same roster of playable characters in order to keep them consistent. The movesets and animations of some returning characters were changed more significantly than during the transition from Super Smash Bros. Melee to Super Smash Bros. Brawl , with many returning characters having completely new moves, and major alterations (such as Pit). Aesthetically, the games are much more stylized and visually intense than the previous entries, with the overall colors being bolder and brighter and many elements having been redone to stand out more, and the characters also appear more similar to their current appearances from their franchises of origin, lacking realistic details in them.

The Wii U version does not make much use of the GamePad's touch screen during gameplay. However, in addition to Off-TV Play, the Wii U GamePad can display in-battle stats, such as damage percentages. [7] Like in all games, Smash has its traditional fighting game mode with its customized rules where four chosen fighters play on chosen stages. This includes the Stamina mode (where players get HP that decreases), Time (time limit), Stock (lives) and Coin Battle (winner is the one that collects the most coins). Special Smash also returns in this version, allowing players to battle under certain conditions. [7]

Customization/cross-connectivity [ edit ]

The Character Settings menu, modifying Rosalina & Luma.

Players can send customized fighters from one version to the other. Players can customize fighter's special attacks with one of three variations for each. The Mii Fighters and Palutena, however, have custom special attacks that aren't variants of the original attacks; these are unlocked from the beginning. Players can also equip items to fighters to increase specific attributes (attack, defense, or speed) while sacrificing others. Up to three items can be equipped at a time, and some items provide additional side effects to the fighter. [8]

The title screen of the Super Smash Bros. Smash Controller app.

Custom characters cannot be used in "With Anyone" online. Additionally, by connecting the two games the player can use their Nintendo 3DS as a controller for the Wii U version [9] ; alternatively, players were able to purchase the "Smash Controller" application that was released on June 14, 2015 from the Nintendo 3DS eShop to use their system as a controller. [10] The "Smash Controller" application requires 314 blocks (40.1 MB) to be installed.

Exclusive modes [ edit ]

8-player smash [ edit ].

8-Player-Smash in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

A new game mode known as 8-Player Smash is also available. As opposed to the traditional four player battles Super Smash Bros. is known for, up to eight players can join a single battle. An option of four teams is allowed, with the yellow team serving as a new team color choice. In this special game mode, most stages are restricted when five or six players are playing and even more when seven or eight are playing; in stages that are playable in 8-Player Smash, stage hazards such as bosses and other features are removed for optimization purposes, though stage incompatibility has shown to be mostly arbitrary, with even some incompatible stages featuring 8-Player spawn points. [11] Omega variants of the same stage may allow for more players. Players additionally cannot play coin battles in 8-Player Smash.

Smash Tour [ edit ]

Smash Tour Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Smash Tour is a new mode serving as the exclusive mode for the Wii U version. Smash Tour is a board game mode in which players (as Miis) travel around a board by spinning a wheel, collecting fighters and power-ups for their fighters scattered around the board. Players start with two fighters by default. If two players cross paths, then all players are pitted into a Smash battle for a reward, and the winner obtains a fighter from one of the other players. Players may also obtain items that can be used to trigger various effects, and random events may also occur on the board. Checkpoints are also scattered around the board which boost players' stats when they pass over them. The number of turns can be set between 15 and 25, and after all the turns have ended, players fight in a Stock match using their stat boosts, their stock based on the fighters they collected. The player can choose between a small, normal-sized, and big board to play on. [7]

Special Orders [ edit ]

Master Orders

In Special Orders, the player has the choice of playing either "Master Orders" or "Crazy Orders", referring to Master Hand and Crazy Hand . In their respective modes, Master Hand and Crazy Hand construct challenges for the player. Players purchase tickets in order to face challenges. In Master Orders, players purchase tickets in order to try one of three challenges, the reward depending on the difficulty; each ticket is used separately, and each challenge may only be tried once. Playing Crazy Orders requires the player to either use a pass or pay 5,000 gold; the player can then play any number of challenges to rack up rewards within a set time limit before facing Crazy Hand in a final battle. If the player loses at any point they lose some of their rewards. [7]

Events [ edit ]

Events

Events return from the previous two installments, in which players take on a series of themed battles. Events are arranged in a grid, however, and the path forward reveals itself when the player completes a given event. Players can also receive various rewards such as trophies, gold, and Special Orders passes by completing challenges. Like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , two player Events are also available. [7]

Masterpieces [ edit ]

Masterpieces in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Masterpieces from Super Smash Bros. Brawl returns as a feature in the Vault . It offers short demos of past Nintendo games that can be played for a certain amount of time. The game can redirect the player to the Nintendo eShop where they may purchase the Virtual Console version of the game, if it is available on the service.

The following is a list of the Masterpieces:

Classic [ edit ]

Classic Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

The Wii U version's Classic Mode operates in a different manner from that of the 3DS version. It still maintains the intensity system in the 3DS version; players can spend gold to increase the intensity level, and if the player gets a Game Over, some of his/her rewards will be lost, and the intensity will lower by .5, unless the intensity level is set at 2.0. Classic Mode can be played with two players together.

Instead of paths, the player has to choose which group of fighters that he/she wants to fight. As many as seven opponents may be fought in a single stage. One of the opponents includes the rival, which is programmed to be harder than the other opponents. The longer the rival stays alive, the stronger it becomes. On some occasions, an intruder may pop up for one match; the intruder will either be giant-sized or metallic. Some opponents may even possess rewards, which can either be gold, trophies, custom parts, or a Crazy Orders Pass.

When the player KOs any opponents, their trophies will be displayed in the "Fighters Defeated" box. The defeated opponents can later be used as allies for any team battle matches. In team battles, opponents that the player's allies KO will also be added to the "Fighters Defeated" box.

There are a total of seven stages, with the first three stages consisting of battles against default opponents and the rival. For stages 4 and 5, the player will face an additional group of opponents, but they will use their alternate color schemes; these opponents may also come equipped with their custom special moves. Stage 6 pits the player against the Fighting Mii Team , where they must KO twenty Fighting Miis. Stage 7 pits the player against Master Hand, but higher intensities will add Crazy Hand, and even Master Core to the mix. Unlike in the 3DS version, the player does not have the option to avoid fighting Crazy Hand on intensity levels 3.0 and higher. Upon completing the mode, the player earns a trophy of their current character.

All-Star [ edit ]

All-Star Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Unlike Classic, All-Star is almost the same as in the Nintendo 3DS version. Some differences include a larger rest area, and the characters appear in reverse chronological order; at the beginning, players face the newest characters and finish with the oldest fighters in the game. All-Star Mode can be played with two players together.

Like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl 's Boss Battles Mode, the player receives a Game Over with no continues if they lose their one stock or run out of time, which then leads to the results display screen showing the gold, Global Smash Power, score, trophies, Crazy Orders Passes, and custom parts that the player earned so far.

Upon completing the mode, the player earns a Final Smash trophy of their current character.

* - Only available in the full All-Star mode. ** - Downloadable content. Only available in this mode after downloading, but it will be removed if the player deletes the game's DLC data. Inclusion does not affect any of the game's challenges.

Stadium [ edit ]

Target Blast

Just like in the Nintendo 3DS version, three stadium games are playable. Home-Run Contest follows the same rules as in the previous installment but with an option to compete with four players. Target Blast now has three stages to play with instead of one, up to four players can participate, and the bomb is bigger in the second round, resulting a bigger explosion when that happens. Multi-Man Smash remains the same as in the Nintendo 3DS version. Multi-Man Smash can be played with up to four players.

Vault [ edit ]

Vault

Similar to the Nintendo 3DS version, the Vault allows players to view and buy Trophies and view records, tips, and replays as well as listen to the sound effects and music. In this version, however, players can also view the games' promotional trailers, ending movies for the fighters, as well as play Masterpieces .

Trophies [ edit ]

Hoard of Trophies in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

There are a total of 743 trophies in the Wii U version. In the Trophies menu, players have the option to buy Trophies from the Trophy Shop like in the Nintendo 3DS version. Trophy Rush is also available, though in this version up to two players can play. Like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , Photo Studio allows the player to pose and resize their Trophies on various backgrounds and take pictures of them. Another new mode known as Trophy Box allows the player to fill boxes with trophies based on a given criteria, such as game series ( Paper Mario , New Super Mario Bros. ) or specific games ( Super Mario Galaxy , Super Mario Galaxy 2 ). [7]

Online Play [ edit ]

This game features online play similar to Super Smash Bros. Brawl in that players from all over the world can face others in matches. When playing With Friends, players can customize the rules to their liking. Voice chat is also available when playing With Friends, though like Mario Kart 8 it can only be used between battles. [7] When playing With Anyone, two basic options are available: For Fun and For Glory. In For Fun mode, players battle on randomly-selected normal stages, excluding Final Destination, with all items turned on. Losses are not recorded in this mode. In For Glory mode, players only play on the flat, Final Destination versions of stages, without items. Players can either play standard Smash or Team Smash matches in both modes, and For Glory offers a 1-on-1 mode as well.

Conquest pits some of the game's various characters against each other, and players who win battles with them in With Anyone mode will add points to that character's score. After a few days, the winning fighter is revealed, players who took part in the conquest by playing as that character get rewarded with gold, and the next conquest begins.

Spectate mode allows players to view matches and bet gold on their outcome, view replays of past online matches, and view a map showing the players currently online.

Rather than an online leaderboard, the game makes use of a different type of ranking system, called "Global Smash Power". A player's GSP score is recorded for each of the various single-player modes, the number indicating how many players around the world they outrank.

Playable characters [ edit ]

Full character select screen for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Including DLC characters, this installment features a total of 58 playable characters. These consist of 37 veterans and 21 newcomers. Certain characters from the previous Super Smash Bros. games have been removed from the rosters of both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions in order to keep them consistent, partly due to limitations with the Nintendo 3DS version. Unlike the previous games in the series, with the removal of in-game transformations, Sheik , Zero Suit Samus , and Charizard are now standalone characters. Of the playable character roster, if excluding Mii Fighters and Roy , eleven originate from the Super Mario franchise and its spin-off series (eighteen if counting each of the Koopalings), with Mario , Luigi , Peach , Bowser , Rosalina & Luma , Dr. Mario , Bowser Jr. , Donkey Kong , Diddy Kong , Yoshi , and Wario being playable.

Mewtwo returns from Super Smash Bros. Melee as a downloadable, 50th character, releasing for free to Club Nintendo members who signed up for a promotion involving the purchase of both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of the game. [12] It was released as a paid download later on for those who did not register both versions. [13] In addition, two more characters return from the previous installments as downloadable characters, namely Roy from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Lucas from Super Smash Bros. Brawl . Four more newcomers made their debut as playable characters: Ryu from the Street Fighter series, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII , Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates , and Bayonetta from the Bayonetta series. DLC characters do not have any custom special moves or any unique Palutena's Guidance conversations.

With the discontinuation of digital purchases for Wii U in March 2023, it is no longer possible to buy the downloadable characters, though they can still be downloaded by those who purchased them when they were available.

NOTE : Characters in italics are newcomers.

amiibo [ edit ]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U natively features amiibo support, and is the first Wii U game to feature amiibo compatibility. Using these figures allows players to have the figure's character appear in the game and fight, either with or against the player or against each other. [24] Every time an amiibo competes in battle, it increases its level and battle stats [25] , the highest level being fifty. [26] Its moves are also customizable. [25] The Super Smash Bros. line of amiibo launched alongside the Wii U game as the first line of amiibo figurines; the Super Smash Bros. line is being released in waves, with every fighter planned to receive an amiibo. [27]

Soundtrack [ edit ]

Pre-release and unused content [ edit ]

According to Masahiro Sakurai on Famitsu, he was planning on adding the Ice Climbers for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U , but despite the characters running without problems on the Wii U version, the team had trouble getting the Ice Climbers working in the Nintendo 3DS, as Masahiro Sakurai stated that the fighters in the 3DS version would be running at 60 frames per second.
