Portable fans are a great way to stay cool on the go, packing a personal breeze to keep temperatures down. After all, heat and humidity can impact our health, mood, and overall experience, especially on scorching days. As a bonus, there’s no need to worry about outlets on the go, or tangled wires, as these devices can be ready to rock with a full charge before you leave home (or the hotel) — but also come in handy during summer power outages, too. They’re a worthy investment though you’ll want to prioritize durability, battery life, weight, and easy maintenance before you shop.

Whether you need a cooling companion for your office desk, while traveling or camping, or literally all the time, there’s a portable fan fit for your needs.

Best Overall

Honeywell turbo on the go personal fan.

This rechargeable fan can also run on AA batteries as a backup.

It only has one speed.

Small but mighty, this Honeywell personal fan is our top pick for its range and dual power sources. Although it only has one speed, the air can reach up to 4 feet so it’s not lacking in force. The fan is incredibly lightweight as well making it a great companion whether you bring it on warm-weather trips or use it right at home instead. It runs pretty quietly, so if it's white noise you’re after for sleeping, this might be the fan for you. We also love that it can be hung, carried, or propped up with the versatile built-in folding stand.

If you don’t have access to a USB port for charging, 4 AA batteries offer a solid backup and, since it uses a DC motor, it saves up to 50 percent in energy usage unlike those with an AC motor. Whether you’re packing this small fan in your luggage, toting it to the gym, or using it as a personal breeze on the deck, this Honeywell Turbo portable fan gets the job done.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or 4 AA batteries (sold separately) | 4.7 x 5 x 12.5 inches | 0.04 pounds

Best Budget

Comfortness mini portable fan.

It has 4 speeds.

It doesn’t have the option for backup batteries.

We love how powerful the compact, lightweight ComfortneSS Mini Portable Handheld Fan is for its size. It folds up for easy storage in even a purse or small tote bag, and comes with a lanyard for wearing around your wrist or neck, too. The battery life is long-lasting with the ability to keep the breeze going all day long (for up to 15 hours on a full charge). This handheld fan offers fantastic value for the price point so you don’t have to dig too deep into those pockets to stay cool. Plus, the seven blades work to keep the air flowing at four speeds — low, medium, high, and strong — so you can choose your desired strength.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 2 x 3.5 x 4.2 inches | 0.37 pounds

Best Wearable

Jisulife neck fan.

It’s bladeless with hands-free cooling.

It takes 3-4 hours to charge.

Get yourself as close to the cooling device as possible with the Jisulife Four Turbo Neck Fan. With a twin-turbine design and 58 widely-shaped air outlets, you can keep cool on the go while choosing from three adjustable speed modes. The rechargeable battery can last up to 7 hours if charged to the max, and this wearable fan is a fantastic travel companion whether spending a hot afternoon at a football game or touring city sites abroad. The bladeless design makes it safer to use with much less of a chance to catch longer hairstyles. And, since it’s lightweight, it’s both comfortable to wear and packable for wherever you need a personal cooling device.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable lithium battery | 2.3 x 7.8 x 8.7 inches | 0.75 pounds

Best for Plane Travel

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It can be used as a handheld or desktop fan.

The highest speed can be noisy.

We love the incredibly lightweight Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan for its versatility and three working speeds. One of our favorite features is the detachable fan cover that can be taken off for quick and easy cleaning. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 20 hours at the lowest speed and up to 5 hours at the highest speed. The compact size makes it super portable to throw in a bag without taking up too much room or adding a lot of weight. The bottom includes an anti-slip mat so it can also be used on a flat surface like a tray table or desk, in lieu of holding it. Additionally, a handy anti-trigger switch on the underside of the base will keep it from accidentally turning on when inside a purse or suitcase.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.8 x 3.4 x 6.2 inches | 0.38 pounds

Best for Camping

Coleman lighted tent fan.

It’s both a fan and a light in one.

The rechargeable power pack is sold separately.

Tents can get hot when camping in warm weather, but the Coleman CPX 6 Lighted Tent Fan helps keep the interior nice and cool for more comfortable sleeping. The versatile design allows it to stand up on the ground or be hung from the ceiling of your tent using the magnetic base and steel plate on the exterior. Soft foam blades keep things safe, and two speeds provide airflow on high or low. The light can be dimmed to a nightlight for children sleeping inside, but note that it’s a little heavier than other portable models so may be best for car camping when it doesn’t need to be hand carried along with other gear.

The Details: 4 D batteries (sold separately), CPX 6 rechargeable power cartridge, or CPX 6 A/C adapter cartridge | 10 x 5.5 inches | 3.025 pounds

Most Versatile

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It’s a fan, flashlight, and power bank all in one.

The included lanyard is difficult to attach.

We love that the Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan isn’t just a cooling device, but also a power bank and flashlight. This multi-tool is pocket-sized, folding up into itself so it’s easy to tote around anywhere at all. The long-lasting battery can go for up to 21 hours on the lower speed and 14 hours on the high speed. We also like the automatic-stop safety feature just in case you touch the blades by accident. This handheld fan is perfect for travel as it can fit easily in your palm, is lightweight, and gives you the option of charging your phone or having a light by your side in a pinch.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 1.57 x 4.72 inches | 0.27 pounds

Best Bladeless

Conbola 11.8-inch desk fan.

It is stylish, sleek, and runs smoothly.

The battery doesn't last as long as other options.

Not only can bladeless fans be more energy-efficient, they’re also often safer and easier to clean, too. This Conbola Desk Fan is our top pick in this category with up to 9 hours of cool air flow when fully charged and 3 adjustable speeds, depending on your needs. The sleek design and touch button control looks nice, and the non-slip rubber bottom keeps it in place on a range of surfaces. This is a great option to put in a checked bag or bring for car travel due to its larger size, and no blades mean your hair can’t get easily caught if you get too close. It cleans with a damp cloth and comes in a handful of appealing colors as well.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4.5 x 5.75 x 11.8 inches | 1.27 pounds

Best Clip-on

Skygenius mini desk fan.

It has 360 degrees of rotation for the preferred placement of airflow.

The battery life isn’t that long.

Clip on the SkyGenius Battery Operated Mini Desk Fan and enjoy a powerful airflow of up to 14.5 feet. The compact size makes it easy to take along wherever you’re going — on vacation, to the office, for camping, and more. This is a great option for clipping onto a stroller or within your car but any surface that can fit the thick clip would work, too. The portable fan can be fully charged in about 4.5 hours and lasts between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the speed you choose. This durable pick operates quietly on both the low and medium speeds, but a little louder on the high speed if sound’s a top consideration for you.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4 x 6.2 x 8 inches | 0.6 pounds

Best With Mister

Comlife portable handheld misting fan.

It’s still lightweight despite the built-in 25-milliliter water tank.

There’s no lock option for the on/off button so you have to be careful it doesn’t accidentally turn on in your bag.

Sometimes you need a little spritz with your breeze and the Comlife Portable Handheld Misting Fan has come to the rescue. We appreciate that this model comes with a silicone seal to prevent water spillage in your bag when you transport it (especially since there’s no way to lock the power switch). It clocks in at around half a pound, so it’s lightweight and portable, particularly when folded up. The original setting rotates between misting and not misting every 5 minutes but the button is multifunctional and even has the option for a continuous mist, as desired. The small, included bottle makes it easy to refill the water tank on the go, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 4.13 x 8.86 inches | 0.57 pounds

Best for Indoors

Sharper image personal fan.

Sharper Image

You have the option to use the USB charge or plug it into the wall directly.

We wish it came with a remote so it could be controlled from afar.

We love that the Sharper Image USB Powered Personal Fan has a removable base and offers a rotating function for better airflow and circulation. When running this fan from the battery charge on its lowest speed, it can last a full 24 hours but the plug alternative lets it continue nonstop. The compact size is perfect for the office or home, especially while working at a desk. For a small fan, it’s fairly strong and keeps the area cool, all while being quiet, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or wall plug | 10.5 x 11.2 x 4.3 inches | 2.2 pounds

Tips for Buying a Portable Fan

Consider the size and attachment types.

Your intended use will determine the best compactness and type. If you’re in the market for a portable fan to take on a vacation, it’s best to prioritize small devices that can fold up to pocket-sized or don’t take up too much space in your luggage. Also consider if you want a handheld fan, one with a stand, or something that can easily clip onto items like strollers. Many fans offer a few different carrying styles including attachable lanyards to go around a wrist or neck, too.

Look at performance and noise

Since we use portable fans for a variety of reasons in a range of settings, researching performance and noise level helps ensure you find the best one for your needs. Since most portable fans run on rechargeable batteries, it’s ideal to look for long battery life that will get you through most of the day. (Most portable fans can last up to 15-20 hours when used on the lowest speed.)

When using a portable fan at work, you’ll most likely want one that operates very quietly, such as a bladeless fan. When traveling, some people prefer the white noise to help them sleep, so a bit more noise is actually desired.

You’ll also want to evaluate how strong the airflow is and how far it goes; you won’t need something super forceful in a confined space like an airplane but, if you’re traveling somewhere like a theme park in Florida or heading on an African safari, purchasing a portable fan with a mister offers additional cooling in extreme temperatures.

Yes, you can bring a portable fan on an airplane in a carry-on or checked bag as long as the device is battery-operated, and complies with posted size restrictions .

Since portable fans differ in design and materials, it’s best to consult the manual for cleaning instructions for your specific model. If info is not provided, most portable fans can be cleaned well by using a vacuum duster attachment and a damp cloth. It’s best not to use cleaners that contain strong chemicals as that may damage the device. To prolong the lifespan, make sure you don’t overcharge the battery, always use the one it came with, and try to keep it out of the sun, particularly when charging.

Typically, you can expect a portable fan to last between 2 and 8 years. A portable fan’s lifespan will depend on the type you have, how often you use it, and how well you take care of it. If you leave your fan running all day, everyday, it will likely not last as long as something used sparingly. Rechargeable batteries can lose maximum potential power over time so it’s important to not overcharge them (i.e., leave them plugged in after they’ve reached full capacity). Sun exposure and water like rainfall can have an impact, too, and it’s wise to make sure not to use an indoor fan outdoors, as that can affect its lifespan as well. Additionally, cleaning your fan regularly according to the instructions provided always helps.

5 Of The Best Travel Fans For White Noise + Buying Tips

Best travel fans for white noise featured

Below you’ll find 5 of the best travel fans for white noise on the market along with short reviews and pros & cons lists for each.

There are also some helpful things to know and consider before spending money or picking a fan. I’d love to help you get the best fan for your needs so read on to learn more.

best travel fan reddit

How does white noise from a fan help?

Fan options to shop for, important foreign travel fan tips, ★ 5 of the best travel fans for white noise ★, summary – the top recommended travel fan for white noise, what is white noise.

White noise is the term used to describe a sound production that’s made up of all frequencies in the audio band (the range you can hear) at equal levels.

“White” is used to describe this particular type while others such as brown and pink exist and describe similar noise but with different acoustical levels in certain frequency ranges.

How white noise helps

How how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

White noise helps by “masking” bothersome noise and creating a more relaxed and distraction-free environment for. Sounds you otherwise would hear are “covered” (masked) by the sound your fan generates, resulting in it effectively eliminating it. As long as the outside sound is of an equal or lesser volume than the white noise it can be blocked.

Fans can improve your quality of life using the principle of sound masking.   This means that the noise it generates simple “covers”, or masks, the sounds that cause you problems and make sleeping or concentrating more difficult.

In reality, the fan isn’t actually removing outside sounds – but for all practical purposes, our brains think it’s gone.

This is because when many sounds are combined together well (especially with noise!) our brains can’t “hear” the distractions anymore.

The result is that as long as the bothersome outside sounds aren’t able to exceed the white noise level we no longer hear them.

Sleep like a baby!

Image of a woman sleeping comfortably

It’s a well-known fact that infants and children are able to sleep more readily with gentle sounds. For example, dishwashers, washing machines, and other sources have a pretty steady and rhythmic “pattern” that affects our brains in a pleasant way.

The psycho-acoustical effect of a soothing noise causes a pleasing and focused state in both many people’s minds and bodies. The result is better sleep as well as better concentration.

It’s especially helpful to have a fan when you travel for many adults or children sleeping in a new environment can be tough. You’re not accustomed to your surroundings and haven’t had time to adapt.

New environments mean new nuances and small sounds you’re not used to which can hurt your quality of sleep. I speak from personal experience!

How fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

“White noise”, the soothing sound produced by many fans, is produced by a number of things that happen when a fan is running. It’s generally caused by the air turbulence created by the blades but often contains the sound of the fan motor, too. When a fan run runs, the air is drawn from the rear and forced out the front which causes noise.

Fans (especially traditional ones like box fans) are an easy-to-use and economical source of noise to cover sounds, reduce stress after a hard day, and promote better sleep.

The funny thing is that fans  aren’t intentionally designed to make noise!  It’s a wonderful side effect of how they work.

There are several factors involved that result in that soothing noise we love:

  • Air passing by the surfaces of the fan’s body
  • The rush of air on the input (suction) and output (forward) sides
  • Fan blades spinning through and disturbing the air
  • Turbulence caused by the nearby air being disturbed due to blowing
  • The gentle humming and operation of the motor itself

These factors combine to produce the cumulative effect as a “white noise” our ears and then brain receive. The result is rhythmic, calming, and most of all helpful sound.

As I described, this white noise is used to “mask, or cover, and effectively eliminate bothersome sounds as far as our brains are concerned.

Because of how fan work, they often have a tendency to vibrate on a very small scale which also contributes to a gentle undertone you’ll enjoy. Both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC, like from USB power or batteries) have sound characteristics you’ll hear without realizing it.

Clip art man shopping online at desk silhouette

For example:

  • Power sources: Will an electrical outlet or USB power be available? Do you need cordless (battery) power?
  • Fan speeds: Will a simple single-speed fan be ok or are more important to you?
  • Folding/compact size: Is a slightly large fan ok or is space really tight?
  • Warranty length
  • Positioning or swivel features

Be sure to give these a thought when shopping. However, you can’t go wrong with the products I’ve researched, tested, and that I recommend below.

Pac2Go Universal travel adapter product image

When traveling abroad it’s critical to be prepared for other power voltages and non-USA electrical outlets. A universal travel adapter set is something I’ve relied on many times. No products found. is a great example of one I recommend. Using a fan without an adapter could destroy it or even cause a fire! This particular model in an amazing 192 countries!

I’ve traveled overseas quite a few times. Without a doubt, one of the best investments I’ve ever made was a universal travel adapter set with outlet adapters and a voltage converter.

Many countries have electrical outlets with different connector jacks that won’t work with American power plugs. Additionally, some countries I’ve been to have 220V (not 120V) power which can destroy your fan, a phone charger, or any electrical devices.

They could potentially even cause a fire!

Be ready to power a fan or other small electrical devices. Do a little research before you go to be sure you can power your small electronics to avoid a tremendous amount of inconvenience.

I’ve learned the hard way that in many areas of the world it’s very difficult to find special power adapters for some of the devices you bring from back home.

Product reviews and details, 1. vornado fit personal circulator – quality cooling and gentle sound on the go.

Vornado Fit personal fan editor's choice image

The wonderful Vornado Fit Personal Air Circulator is nice take on the traditional small fan. If you’re unfamiliar with the company, Vornado manufactures some of the best air comfort products on the market.

It’s a well-made fan that takes up very little desk or table space as well. Two color options are available: Aqua or pink.

2 speeds are available for your comfort and white noise needs: low and fast. While it’s a quiet fan, it still provides a pleasing white noise sound you can use next to when you’re traveling.

It’s just a matter of selecting low, off, or high from the sturdy rocker switch on the side.

Vornado Fit personal fan side rear views

The Vornado Fit is a great little fan that’s well-made and perfect for putting in luggage. The base folds underneath when not in use for compact storage.

And speaking of travel, what would a small be without portability? The Fit folds up easily and is great in luggage. The design makes it easier to pack it in luggage when you’re ready to go.

It’s powered by standard 110 AC power so unfortunately there’s no battery option. However, one reason for this is that it’s more powerful than lesser fans and provides much greater airflow.

Measuring a small 8.3 x 7.5 x 5.2 inches in size, it’s definitely a travel fan that’s great for hotel rooms, resorts, and just about anywhere you need nice white sound and an outlet is available.

Vornado also offers a 3 year warranty which most others don’t.

  • 2-speed fan control
  • Compact but good airflow for cooling
  • Small size (8.3 x 7.5 x 5.2″)
  • 2 accent colors available
  • Folds up for easy travel
  • 3 year limited warranty
  • Nice white noise sound, but not too loud
  • No battery or USB power option
  • Fan angle not adjustable like some competitors
  • Costs a bit more than some others

Vornado’s fans are some of the best you’ll find anywhere and the Fit is a great fan that’s well-made and dependable.

Thanks to the unique design the base serves as not just a stand but a battery holder, too. When folded for travel it’s very compact and easy to store.

There’s also a small carry handle feature at the top as well. An AC adapter is included.

Opolar portable fan image 1

Measuring a tiny 5.9 by 4.9 inches, it’s ultra-compact and easy to fit into bags when it’s time to go. With the Opolar fan you’re ready for all sorts of environments even if outlet power isn’t available.

Opolar portable fan battery

Depending upon use, you’ll get several hours of comfortable cooling and soft white noise to get you through your rest. Expect about 3-11 hours of use depending on which of the fan speeds you choose (low, medium, or high).

Opolar portable fan light features image

Even more, you also get an optional internal accent light/night light as well as a side light that works like a small flashlight. They’re cool features that are unexpected in this price range.

2 built-in lights are provided and I really like them. LED lights are provided for optional use as an accent light/night light as well as a mini flashlight on the side of the base.

Electronic controls round out a  great little fan.

And most importantly, it produces a steady and soothing ambient white noise you’ll enjoy. It’s also one of the best rated in its price range!

  • 3-11 hour battery power time
  • Rechargeable battery included
  • USB power option (cable included)
  • Built-in flashlight
  • Electronic controls
  • 3 fan speeds
  • Internal accent/night light
  • AC adapter not included
  • No swivel positioning for fan top
  • No carrying case

I recommend it because it’s a great combination of cooling, features, and especially value.

4. SkyGenius rechargeable clip-on – It goes and provides white noise where others can’t

SkyGenius clip-on fan front

  • Battery and USB powered (no outlet needed!)
  • Rechargeable, and includes the battery
  • Can be used on a table or clip on to  nearly anything

Sound impossible? It’s not. The SkyGenius battery powered clip-on mini fan is all of these things. It’s a fantastic choice for where other fans can’t go!

SkyGenius clip-on fan features image

The SkyGenius fan includes a rechargeable battery and USB cable for powering the fan or charging the battery. What’s especially great about this model is how you can adjust it for airflow  perfectly where you need it. The swivel head is easy to use and works great.

One of my biggest reasons for recommending this little winner is how great the design is. The fan cage can be rotated to  any position you need for cooling or white noise use.

There’s also an adjustable fan speed control on the rear . That’s a very unique – and rare – feature for a fan that’s priced so low.

SkyGenius clip-on fan desk use examples

The SkyGenius works great both with its clip feature or standing on its base. Don’t forget you can power it directly from any USB port!

But you’re not limited to using it only with the clip – the base is designed to work on any tabletop or desk just like any other small fan. It measures a mere 7.5 x 6 x 4 inches in size, so it’s an excellent choice for travel.

For having white noise you can literally take anywhere, it’s a slam dunk.

  • Battery or USB power
  • Rechargeable battery and USB cables included
  • Adjustable fan speed
  • Clip-on feature works almost anywhere
  • Desk stand base
  • Swivel head w/ 360 degree rotation
  • Simple controls
  • Great price
  • Good buyer reviews
  • Some buyers prefer fixed speed controls
  • No AC adapter included
  • Black only (no white available)
  • Can’t fold for storage

All-in-all, it’s one of the values in a travel fan for white noise anywhere. If you need the greatest in ease of use and portability, be sure to check it out.

5.  Honeywell HTF090B Turbo – Compact and convenient with 3 power options

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo folding fan

I’m already a big Honeywell fan as I’ve tested many of their air quality products. They’re some of the best I’ve owned and tested. This cool little Turbo model is no different.

It’s a single-speed fan with simple operation that folds  very neatly out of the way. At 4.7 x 2.28 x 6.4 inches, it’s really small but can cool efficiently and create great white noise you’ll like.

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo On the Go portable fan side and rear views

Two great power options are available: USB power (using the included cable) or 4 AA batteries if you need cable-free power.

Thanks to the DC motor design it helps reduce energy waste and can be powered by the batteries more efficiently for extended battery length.

Not only that, but the base it folds into can also double as a carrying handle for your convenience.

  • Battery powered (4 x AA)
  • Super compact
  • Smart folding design
  • Simple on-off control
  • Clear, helpful instructions
  • High airflow despite small size
  • Nice white noise production for its class
  • Great price and build quality
  • Excellent buyer reviews
  • Single speed only
  • No AC-USB power adapter included
  • Cannot swivel fan horizontally

Undoubtedly, the Turbo on the Go fan is one of the most compact and easy-to-use travel fans you’ll find.

If you’re on a budget but want a well-made mini fan for traveling and still enjoying white noise, it’s an excellent choice.

Vornado Fit personal fan editor's choice image

I awarded the Vornado Fit my Editor’s Choice distinction. For those who need a solid performer for white noise you can take with you, it’s a great choice.

It was a tough call, but I’m happy to recommend the Vornado Fit folding portable fan to anyone with access to a standard outlet. You’ll get lovely white noise to help you relax or sleep with the added benefit of great build quality and ease of use.

Your comments are welcome!

Which one was the loudest? Thank you!

Hi, the Vornado is one of the louder ones. Most were pretty similar, more or less, depending on their speed setting, etc.

However, another option, if you’ve got room in your luggage or bag, is a slightly larger one like an 8-inch portable fan like this one. They’re louder and still pretty affordable. Hope that helps!

Hi there, I was so happy to find this page. We are traveling to Europe this June from America and my hubby and kids are addicted to the sound of loud box fans, as well as the breeze they offer. I’m trying to figure out what on earth I can do that is small enough to travel with but that also makes as loud of a noise as possible. I do have some white noise machine makers, but they will still want a fan, so having a fan that is loud is the best solution. So funny companies pride themselves on making quiet fans when so many of us want LOUD fans for sleeping LOL! I found a video of the Vornado one and it makes an ok sound when on high, but I was hoping for louder. Grant, I love the 8″ portable Comfort Zone fan you linked to in the comments section. This is exactly what I’m looking for I believe. Only issue is that it is definitely a 120V and I need one that is 220V for Europe (specifically Amsterdam, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and UK). I have heard it’s possible to buy a voltage converter but so many people say they cannot be counted upon to work, and often blow a circuit and that would be horrible cuz then we’re stuck with no fan at all. Don’t suppose anyone out there has any advice? Thanks in advance! -Katie

Hi Katie. I understand what you mean about fan noise & quiet fan noise. The good news is I can tell you from personal experience that a 220V to 110V travel converter with a real transformer will work fine, as I’ve used them myself.

It’s the other type (the ones that don’t produce a real sine wave like you find in your home’s electrical supply) that can cause issues. Here’s an example of the type I’m talking about that work well: ELC step down voltage converter.

Note that you may be be able to use a smaller version based on the wattage of whatever you’re planning to plug in requires. Here’s an example of a lower wattage model adapter.

Best regards!

Last chance: 6 best portable fans on sale for Amazon Prime Day

Jordan Waller

This year witnessed record-high temperatures worldwide, with the mercury repeatedly hitting over 100 degrees Fahrenheit from Arizona to Nevada, Texas and across the ocean, stretching into Athens, Greece and beyond.

With the final day of Amazon's Fall Prime Day upon us, now is a great time to get a good deal on a hi-tech portable fan. Trust us, you'll be thankful by the time summer comes back around.

Here are some of the TPG team favorites and best-reviewed portable fans on Amazon that are currently on sale.

Best for extra features: Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan — $14.39 (normally $24.99)

best travel fan reddit

Coming in strong with an Amazon rating of 4.6, this portable fan from Jisulife is a small but mighty device that offers great value for the money.

Ergonomically designed, this device easily folds small to pack in a bag. It's also rechargeable, offering between 14 and 21 hours of use depending on which of its two settings you use. It comes with two great additional features: The fan houses a small flashlight and also functions as a power bank that can charge your devices on the go.

Still need convincing? TPG travel reporter Tarah Chieffi who makes frequent trips to the often-hot Orlando theme parks, never travels without it.

"It folds up small and holds a charge for longer than any other fan I've tried," she said. "I also love that I can use it to charge my phone when I am on the go."

Buy: Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan , $14.39 (normally $24.99)

Best for hotel rooms: coldSky Portable Handheld Fan — $12.74 (normally $14.99)

best travel fan reddit

This sturdy and powerful fan might be slightly larger than other portable fans (though certainly small enough to pack into a tote bag), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, you want something with a little more oomph for when you accidentally book yourself into a hotel room that has subpar (or not) air conditioning .

The coldSky device is essentially a compact desk fan that packs a punch but is still small enough not to clutter up your hotel room's bedside table. It has five speeds and a seven-blade design that will make your room breezy in no time. It also has a handy digital display showing the remaining battery life so you know when to recharge the device.

Buy: coldSky Portable Handheld Fan , $12.74 (normally $14.99)

Best for serious wind power: Jisulife Handheld Fan — $12.99 (normally $22.99)

best travel fan reddit

This is a stylishly designed hand-held fan that can also easily stand up on a desk.

The Jisulife Handheld Fan offers up to 16 hours of battery power and is easily charged via USB. It has fewer speed settings than some other fans on this list, but its real selling point is its strength. At full speed, it can reach up to 4,400 revolutions per minute; this equates to the feel of a strong wind, making it great for cutting through the harshest of heat.

Buy: Jisulife Handheld Fan , $12.99 (normally $22.99)

Best hands-free fan: Penkou Portable Neck Fan — $25.99 (normally $39.99)

best travel fan reddit

Looking for something you don't have to carry around in your hands all day but are also worried that a wearable fan sounds like a quirky steampunk contraption? This neck fan by Penkou is a safe option.

When in use, the device looks similar to a pair of headphones dangling around your neck. Its bladeless fan design produces less than 20 decibels of sound (about the same level as leaves gently rustling), so it also comes free of noise distraction. And with a weight of just 8.8 ounces, you should be safe from neck strain.

In terms of battery power, you should get between three and 16 hours, depending on which setting you prefer. It's perfect for hikes, at the theme park or to wear during a long, sweaty train or bus journey.

Buy: Penkou Portable Neck Fan , $25.99 (normally $39.99)

TPG favorite: VersionTech Mini Handheld Fan — $12.99 (normally $27.99)

best travel fan reddit

Finally, if you're looking for something cheap but reliable enough to shower you with a pleasant breeze, we recommend VersionTech's mini-handled fan. It's a favorite of TPG director of travel content Summer Hull.

This device can function like both a hand-held fan and a small desk fan. It also easily clips to bags or other thin surfaces.

The fan has three adjustable speeds and will work for up to three hours on the highest setting or eight hours on the lowest. It's currently priced at $12.99, down from its usual price tag of $27.99 as of this publication date. Get it while you can.

Why Trust The Spruce

The Spruce / David Hattan

Portable fans are ideal for keeping cool during summer camping adventures, working in your garden, or reading by the ocean. They come with covered blades that keep you safe, flexible power sources , and automatic shut-off features to preserve battery power.

Quiet portable fans are especially useful for keeping cool at night or in an office where you want to avoid disturbing others, a wearable fan can come in handy on a long hike, and portable stand and desk fans work well when you're staying put for a while.

Deane Biermeier , a member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board, tells us that a good portable fan is made from “durable materials like heavy-duty plastic, steel, or aluminum” and is easy to maintain and keep clean . To keep the airflow going, a removable blade guard makes it easier to clean lint and other debris.

We researched dozens of portable fans, taking into consideration their cooling power , design , ease of use , and extra features , to determine the best models available.

Best Overall

Milwaukee jobsite fan.

Ace Hardware

Durable and effective

Two power options

Great battery life

Battery and charger set cost extra

No oscillation feature

Slightly noisier on highest setting

The Milwaukee M18 Jobsite Fan has earned the top spot in our roundup because it offers a lot of cooling power in a sturdy and functional design. We love that this fan can be powered by a Milwaukee rechargeable battery or an AC adaptor. When operating on its lowest mode, the unit can run for up to 17 hours on its battery, making it a great option for camping trips or other long excursions.

If you want to use it in a particularly hot room in your house in the summer, you can plug it into an outlet and use it worry-free of the battery draining. Please note that purchasing the fan with the battery and charger set does cost extra, so you'll only be able to use it plugged in if you don't add that to your cart. It uses standard Milwaukee 18v batteries though, so you may already have a compatible battery if you have any 18v Milwaukee tools like drills or saws .

If you don't own any Milwaukee batteries, the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless Hybrid Whisper Series Fan (our best quiet pick) has a similar setup. It uses batteries that work with other Ryobi power tools and also comes with a battery. However, it lacks a plug-in option like this fan.

The fan lacks an oscillation feature, but it can be tilted up to 120 degrees and has nine locking positions, giving you good control over the direction where it circulates air. The fan also has three different speed settings, and it is very effective at circulating air. On its highest setting, the fan can reach a maximum air velocity of 18 miles per hour.

While it’s not an overall noisy fan, it does produce a more noticeable sound on its highest setting, though not enough to be considered significantly disruptive. Despite being compact and light, the unit is not flimsy — it has a durable build and stands sturdily. The fan conveniently has four keyhole hangers built into it, too, so you can hang it up to circulate air at a more elevated height.

Dimensions : 14.07 x 10.29 x 7.15 inches | Weight : 5.2 pounds | Power Source : Battery-powered

Best Budget

Honeywell turbo on the go personal fan.

Multiple ways to use

Very light and compact

Quiet operation

Two power source options

Only one power setting

No oscillation or adjustable angle

Batteries not included

With an under-$20 price tag and a well-functioning design, the Honeywell Turbo On The Go Fan is our favorite budget-friendly portable fan. The fan is incredibly compact and lightweight , weighing just under half a pound. It has a lot of useful modes as well, and you can use it as a desk fan , hang it up on a hook or exercise equipment hand, or use it as a handheld fan .

This model only has one speed setting, but it offers a good amount of air movement considering its size. That being said, the closer you are to the fan, the more you will get out of its cooling powers because this small, handheld-friendly fan is not going to offer you the same power as a larger stand-alone model.

One of this fan’s greatest features is its quiet operation . When paired with its small size, that makes it an unobtrusive option you can use in a variety of spaces. You can also choose to power it by plugging it into a power source with a USB cable or with AA batteries . While the fan comes with a USB cord, it does not come with batteries.

Dimensions : 12.5 x 4.74 inches | Weight : 0.49 pounds | Power Source : Batteries or USB cable

Ryobi Cordless Hybrid Whisper Series Fan Kit

Both powerful and quiet

Built-in handle and hanging option

Battery life could be better

We recommend the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless Hybrid Whisper Series Fan Kit for anyone looking for a portable fan that’s especially quiet , but still powerful . The fan is part of Ryobi’s Whisper Series line of products, which, compared to other models, are designed to be 44 percent quieter while also offering an increased air velocity.

This fan lets you choose from a low-speed option of 930 RPM, a medium-speed option of 1,500 RPM, and a high-speed option of 1,850 RPM. (Note: RPM stands for revolutions per minute). The fan can be tilted up to 160 degrees, and it has a hanging option.

This is a fairly lightweight fan (it weighs under 4 pounds), and it has a built-in handle at its top, so it’s easy to carry around as well. You can power up the unit with its battery or with its AC adaptor, and when relying on the battery option for power, the fan can run for up to 6 hours. This fan has a fairly short battery life, but that isn't necessarily a huge issue since it uses standard Ryobi 18v batteries . That can come in really useful on a long camping trip or on the job site since you can just pop a new battery in when one dies. You can also pick up a 12v Ryobi battery charger that you can plug into your car , which is a viable option for keeping this fan powered up when you're out on an adventure.

Dimensions : 15.5 x 12.9 x 11.2 inches | Weight : 3.9 pounds | Power Source : Corded electric or rechargeable battery

Best Handheld

Amacool battery operated stroller fan.

Flexible tripod handle

Safe blade cover

Includes built-in LED lights

Fragile tripod legs

Some ship with the wrong cable

Handheld fans need to be especially flexible , which is why we like this Amacool fan so much. Instead of a basic handle, it's built on a flexible tripod that lets you stick it just about anywhere you need a cooling breeze. It's especially good for clipping onto a stroller handle or exercise equipment , and you can also set it up like a desktop fan or fold the legs together to hold it like a regular handheld fan . We love that this fan includes a safe battery cover, especially since it's great for strollers. The cover is designed with openings that are closer together than normal for added safety, and it also has a built-in LED light with three settings to work as a nightlight or flashlight.

Amacool says that this fan lasts up to 10 hours between charges , so you can easily leave it on all night while you're sleeping. It charges while it's on, too, so you can use it all night and have it ready to cool you off during your adventures the next day.

The tripod legs are especially flexible and useful for placing this fan exactly where you need it (and it stays put!), but they are a little fragile. That isn't an issue if you just use it in handheld mode, but you may want to be a little careful when wrapping and unwrapping the legs from around a stroller handle. The Honeywell Turbo on the Go (our best budget pick) has a more robust handle, but it's harder to secure in place anywhere but a desk or table.

Some of these fans seem to ship with the wrong cable since Amacool switched from micro USB to USB C at some point, but who doesn't have a drawer of USB cables ready to go at this point?

Dimensions : 5.10 x 1.65 x 1.65 inches | Weight : 0.40 pounds | Power Source : Rechargeable battery

Best Wearable

Jisulife portable neck fan.

3 different speed options

Light and comfortable to wear

Stylish design

Good battery life on low mode

Have to be mindful of hair

Battery life on high mode could be longer

While handheld fans are great to take with you on long walks or beach trips, the Jisulife Portable Neck Fan lets you keep your hands for from carrying other gear. It's lightweight and comfortable , and it douses you with air around your neck for a remarkable cooling effect.

This fan is bladeless , but it is still possible for hair to get caught in the fan’s openings, so those with longer hair are best off wearing this with their hair tied up. On the plus side, this neck fan is very light, weighing just a little over half a pound, so most people shouldn’t find the unit to be uncomfortably heavy or burdensome to wear around their neck.

The fan has a modern, low-profile design, so it won’t look awkward as you wear it. The unit has three different modes, all of which provide a pleasant amount of air circulation. This model is designed to circulate air all around your neck, including at the back, which makes it an extra efficient option compared to models that only circulate air in front of the wearer. For a more traditional fan that also provides a hands-free option, the Amacool Battery Operated Stroller Fan (our best handheld pick) has a flexible tripod mount that lets you attach it just about anywhere.

The battery can last up to 16 hours on the lowest mode, which is great, but it can only run for up to 4 hours on the high mode. When the unit does run out of power, you can recharge it with the included USB Type-C charging cable.

Dimensions : 7.8 x 7.8 inches x 2.4 inches | Weight : 0.57 pounds | Power Source : Rechargeable battery

Best for Bedroom

Treva 10-inch portable fan.

Sleek design

No adjustable angle

Requires a lot of batteries

In addition to circulating air well enough to keep a room cool and having a quality design, a portable bedroom fan should also be nightstand-friendly and operate quietly so it doesn’t disrupt you as you try to fall asleep, read in bed, or watch TV—which are all qualities the Treva 10-Inch Portable Fan possesses. This fan has a sleek and low-profile design, too, which makes it a great addition to any bedroom since it won’t disrupt the ambiance of your pre-existing decor.

This fan is the perfect size to place on a bedside table or windowsill in warmer months since it won’t take up the entire tabletop space, but it’s still large enough with 10-inch blades to offer air circulation you can feel without being right next to it.

The fan weighs a little over two pounds, so it is easy to move around your room whenever you need. The angle of the fan cannot be adjusted though, which is something to keep in mind as you think about where you want to place it.

The unit has two speed settings, and it runs on your choice of batteries or the included AC adaptor. It isn't a rechargeable model though. You need to supply six D batteries to for it to run, which is a significant number of batteries that also adds a lot of weight. The benefit is that when the batteries do run out, you don't need to wait around for them to charge. Just install six new batteries, and it's back up and running.

Dimensions : 12.9 x 12 x 3.8 inches | Weight : 2.39 pounds | Power Source : Battery-powered or corded electric

Best for Battery Powered

Geek aire battery-operated floor fan.

Sturdy, water-resistant build

Battery life indicator

Integrated charging port

Heavier and larger than other models

If you’re spending an extended period of time in a warm and expansive outdoor space while on a camping trip, you may want an especially powerful and durable portable fan like the Geek Aire CF1 Outdoor Rechargeable Floor Fan.

This is a water-resistant fan, which makes it especially suitable for the outdoors. This fan is heavier and larger than most of the other fans included in our roundup, which can actually be beneficial when using the fan in the rugged outdoors since it will be more difficult to knock over than a lighter model. In terms of power, the fan’s highest setting operates at a powerful speed of 1500 CFM.

The fan tilts on its base by up to 120 degrees, and it has an integrated handle that makes carrying it easier. We also like that the fan has a clear LED battery life indicator, so you can easily monitor when it will soon need a recharge.

The fan's battery life is good, too, as it can run for 4 hours when operating on its high mode and for an impressive 24 hours when operating on its low mode. As a bonus, the fan has a USB charging port built into it that you can use to charge other devices while you're camping.

Dimensions : 14.5 x 16.7 x 7.09 inches | Weight : 6.54 pounds | Power Source : Rechargeable battery

The Milwaukee M18 Jobsite Fan is our best overall portable fan recommendation because it offers a lot of power in a compact and adjustable design, and its handle, hanging option, and ability to run on either corded electric or battery power make it a versatile model. For a less expensive option that still gets the job done, we recommend the Honeywell Turbo On The Go Fan (our best budget pick), because it can be positioned multiple ways, operates quietly, and is very lightweight and small, making it easy to throw in a bag and take with you anywhere on-the-go.

What to Look for in a Portable Fan

Before deciding what type of portable fan is best for you, consider the scenarios and spaces in which you intend to use it.

Standing Fans : Standing portable fans are easy to carry from place to place and use in an array of settings, but once they are operating they should be situated on a stable surface and remain stationary. Unlike handheld fans, these types of fans are not meant to move with you or be kept on your person while operating. Standing fans are also larger than handheld fans, and can thus generate greater air circulation.

If you are looking for a fan to use in your backyard as you garden, in a garage as you tackle a new home DIY project, or on a camping trip, standing fans are probably the best option for you as they tend to offer powerful, hands-free air circulation. Some standing fans, such as our pick for the best overall portable fan, the Milwaukee M18 Jobsite Fan , also have hanging options so you can raise them off a low surface if needed.

Desktop Fans : Desktop fans are similar to standing fans in that they are easy to move from place to place, but they are meant to be situated on a flat surface when operating. They are a more specific type of standing fan, as they are typically designed to have a more compact profile so they can easily sit on a table or desk without taking up too much surface space.

These fans are best suited for people looking for a portable fan to take into a hot office or keep on a nightstand in their bedroom. Our pick for the best bedroom fan, the Treva Portable Fan , is tabletop-friendly, measuring around a foot long and tall and only four inches deep.

Handheld Fans : Handheld fans are typically the lightest and smallest portable fans you can buy, as they are meant to fit in the palm of your hand. If you want a fan that you can use as you walk or move around a lot, such as on a hike or during a visit to an amusement park, this is likely the best option for you because it can move with you as it operates.

The biggest hassle with these types of fans is that while you can easily throw them in a backpack or pocket when you’re not using them, you will have to hold them up to you while you are using them, which can be tiring. Our best handheld pick, the Amacool Battery Operated Stroller Fan , has a built-in flexible tripod that lets you use it as a desk fan or even hang it securely on the handle of a stroller or the control panel of your favorite exercise equipment.

Wearable Neck Fans : Like handheld fans, wearable neck fans offer air circulation that moves with you. However, unlike handheld models, you will not have to keep holding them the entire time they are in use, as they just sit around your neck for hands-free operation. Since they are also very compact options, neck fans offer less air circulation than standing models.

You want to be careful when using this type of unit that your hair does not get caught in the fan. People with longer hair may find this to be tricky, so if you have long hair and want to use a neck fan, you should consider tying your hair up before using it. You also want to check the weight of a neck fan and make sure it is light enough to meet your comfort preferences since a model that’s too heavy can be uncomfortable to wear and may cause neck pain. Our pick for the best wearable fan, the Jisulife Portable Neck Fan , weighs a little over half a pound.

When deciding what size fan you should purchase, you should consider your intended use of the fan. For instance, if you’re looking for a fan to keep you cool as you walk through an amusement park, you will likely want a handheld fan option that is slim enough to easily and comfortable grip in your palm, such as our pick for the best handheld fan, the JisuLife Handheld Mini Fan .

If you are looking for a fan to use while you work in your garage or go on a camping trip, investing in a larger portable fan that measures over a foot wide and provides greater air circulation may make more sense. Since the fan will spend a lot of time sitting on a floor while it operates and as you engage in some other activity, and you will only need to move the fan from point A to point B, rather than carry it around for long stretches of time.

Power Source

Different fans rely on different types of power sources. Three of the most common types of power sources used are outlined below, please note that many fans included in our roundup can operate on two different types of power sources, with the majority of the models having one battery-operated option and one plug-in option.

Disposable battery: Portable fans can run on disposable batteries that, once depleted, must be disposed of and replaced with new batteries. These types of fans tend to be lighter since disposable batteries tend to be lighter than rechargeable batteries. Disposable battery-operated fans also tend to cost less than rechargeable models upon initial purchase. However, you will need to buy new batteries when the fan’s battery dies, which is an added cost over time.

Our pick for the best budget fan, the Honeywell Turbo On The Go Fan , can be powered via a USB cable or with AA batteries. Another benefit of this type of fan is that if you have batteries on hand, you can quickly pop the old batteries out and the new batteries in and begin using it right away again after the battery dies instead of waiting for it to charge. The downside to disposable batteries is that if you forget to keep extras on hand, you will have to buy more before using the fan again, which is inconvenient.

Rechargeable battery : Just as their names suggest, rechargeable fans have a battery that can be recharged instead of disposed of once they run out of power. While rechargeable fans may cost more when you first purchase them, they spare you trips to the convenience store to buy new batteries and thus have less long-term maintenance cost. They also lead to less waste being produced.

The primary pitfall of a rechargeable fan is that when its battery is depleted, you will need to wait for it to recharge before you use it again. That’s why it can be useful to purchase a rechargeable battery-operated model that can also operate while plugged into an outlet. Our pick for the best overall portable fan, the Milwaukee M18 Jobsite Fan , can run on a rechargeable battery as well as while plugged into an outlet via its AC adaptor. When operating on its lowest mode and on its rechargeable battery, the model can run for up to 17 hours.

Corded electric : Many of the fans on this list are battery-operated and thus can be used as a cordless model, but they also have a corded option. The option to use a battery-operated fan as a corded electric model is especially helpful if your fan’s battery is depleted, you have access to a power outlet, and you need to use your fan immediately without waiting for the battery to recharge.

Some portable fans may also only have a corded electric option and be considered portable just because they are compact and lightweight and thus easy to take from place to place. Corded electric options tend to offer more power than battery-operated options. However, since they need to be plugged in, you have less flexibility as to where you can place and use this type of fan.

Performance and Noise Level

Before purchasing a portable fan, you should check the unit’s product description to see how many speed settings the fan offers. If you are looking to use your fan in a range of different settings, you may want to make sure your fan offers a low, medium, and high mode so you can adjust the speed to best fit different scenarios.

You should also check a fan’s product description to note the fan's noise rating. If you intend to use your portable fan in an office where you will be working around other people, in a room in your home where you sleep or watch TV, or on a camping trip where you will be socializing with others, you do not want a fan that’s noisy enough to distract from your work or leisurely activities.

Our pick for the best quiet fan, the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless Hybrid Whisper Series Fan Kit , has a sound rating of 47 dBA and is designed to operate at a noise level that is 44 percent quieter than other models.

Speed settings and noise ratings are not the only things you should consider when trying to determine which portable fan is the best-performing model for you. Biermeier tells us that an overall well-performing fan is "easy to keep clean, stable enough not to have to keep an eye on,  [and] can move as much air as necessary for the given job,” while also offering speed settings that are “easily controllable.”

The long term lifespan of a handheld fan will vary from model to model, and largely be dependent on the quality of its build. Handheld fans with more durable casing, blades, and motors, will last longer than models made with flimsier materials. In general, when properly cared for, a handheld fan should last for years.

In terms of battery life, how long a handheld fan can last will, again, vary from model to model. How long a rechargeable or non-rechargeable unit can last on a single charge or set of batteries, respectively, will depend on factors such as the type of battery used, as well as how much power is required of the speed setting you use. For instance, if the fan you are using has a low, medium, and high mode, the battery will typically drain faster when operating on its high mode and slower when operating on its low mode. Most battery-operated fans, whether rechargeable or not, will have the battery life listed in its product description. Keep in mind, most product descriptions will list how long the battery lasts while operating on the fan’s lowest mode.

Biermeier tells us that one reason a fan may be considered a worthwhile investment is that they can do a good job at circulating the air while not costing much to operate. However, before purchasing a fan, it is important to keep in mind that fans only circulate the air — they do not cool the air. This means a fan can be a worthwhile investment if you are looking for a way to feel more refreshed in hot and stuffy air , but if you are looking to combat extreme heat in your home, you are probably better off investing in an air conditioner , which typically offers more cooling power than a fan. Biermeier adds that “when used in conjunction with an AC, a fan can allow you to leave the thermostat at a higher temperature and save money on air conditioning.”

Fans can get weaker over time, as they experience wear and tear like all other tools after prolonged use. Biermeier tells us that “fan motors and bearings can wear over time in a fan which can dramatically weaken them while making them less efficient to operate.” That being said, when properly treated and cared for, the average fan should last for many years. Biermeier recommends keeping a fan’s “blades and motor housing clean” to extend the lifespan and efficiency of any fan you invest in.

5 Best Portable Fans for Traveling [2024]: Stay cool on the road!

Loud hostels disrupting your sleep? Long lines in the heat melting your glow? Read on for the best portable and handheld fans to keep you cool on your travels.

best travel fan reddit

For many people, traveling with a fan is a must. If you are used to sleeping with white noise, the hum of a fan can do the trick to help you get better sleep. It can also be the key to helping drown out that one person who always ends up snoring in your hostel. For others,  combating the summer heat of  Europe  or the humidity of  Asia , a mini or handheld fan can be a lifesaver. But if you like to travel light, it can be hard to find just the right portable fan that will tuck away in your luggage or carryon.

In this review, we'll take a look at several different styles of mini fans, handheld fans, and portable fans that travelers love and best of all, take up little space in your luggage.

What to Look for in a portable travel fan

There are many different styles of travel fans depending on the need you are trying to meet. Some want a fan that can fold up and fit in a purse, while others want one that can clip onto a bed or stand on a desk. Check out the different features to think about below.

Size: Hand Held, Mini, or Table Fan?

Deciding when you want to use it is the first step in figuring out the best fan for you. There are some that you hold in your hand to cool you off while waiting in that hot never, ending line to get into that popular museum. Others are better for those muggy nights clipped onto your hostel bunk to drown out the partiers and to blow a light breeze on your face. Do you want to carry it everywhere in your purse or have it in your  backpack ? These are some things to consider in your search.

Power Source

One of the tricky parts of traveling is navigating different outlet types.

  • USB is a pretty reliable source that you find in a lot of newer hotels, computers, and  travel adaptors , and many portable fans use USB  as a way to charge them.
  • Standard plug-in fans are always an option. Plug them into the wall, and they go forever or use your adaptor to plug it in and breeze away.
  • Chargeable! This is nice when you are on the go and are nowhere near a plug. Charge it and use it until you can get back to a power source. Best for handheld fans used when you are running around and trying not to melt.

This fan is unique in that you just place it around your neck and a quiet, cool breeze for your neck and face will keep you refreshed. Our Rating: 3.5/5

  • Unique Design
  • Strong Speed, Quiet
  • Conversation Starter!
  • More Expensive at over $30 USD

Some users have found that the flexible arms don't stay tight and the fan will move out of place, and others would like the fan strength to be a bit stronger. But if you want an option for a fan that will work almost anywhere, this is a great fan to look into.

Our Rating: 4/5

  • Versatile to wrap around, handheld or stand on its own
  • USB with long charge

Clip on Portable Fan for Travel

If a portable fan for use in one location such as sleeping or at a desk, is what you are looking for, here is a great option to consider. This fan has a clip-on feature that does need to be plugged into a USB port, so it is not chargeable and is something to consider if you want to use it away from a power supply. At 6 inches, it's bigger than a handheld fan but still very packable for a carryon. People like the clip-on feature and the dual speeds, but some have indicated that it's a bit louder and that they wish the cord was a bit longer.

Our Rating: 3.2 /5

  • Many different colors
  • Clip on good for Hostels
  • Strong speed with swivel for more flexibility
  • Not as portable
  • Not as quiet as some portable fans
  • Cord is short

7 Features to Look for in a Camping Fan

When looking for a camping fan, you may want to consider additional features that go beyond its portable design. The following is my list of the best features to consider.

Compact Design

When shopping, don't equate a bigger model with more power. There are compact designs that still blow a lot of air.

So, I recommend first looking at fans with a small, compact design that won't take up much space in your RV.

In addition, you may want to look for a design that includes a carry handle. It's a convenient feature that is often overlooked until you start lugging the fan around.

Rechargeable Battery

Fans with rechargeable batteries can offer a more predictable battery life. You can easily connect the USB cable to the power bank whenever you need to operate the fan.

Some fans require the use of D-cell batteries, which is not always the best power source. They can be cumbersome and take up your precious cargo space. In addition, if you forget to purchase new batteries for the trip, you may find yourself with a dead fan.

A rechargeable fan is also an excellent option if you have solar panels . Your solar panel may have a USB port available to plug in devices to charge.

In that case, you would have a power source right at your fingertips. Say goodbye to lugging around those D batteries!

But don't worry. We still include some battery-operated fans on our list for those that have limited access to power while camping.

Another one of the extra features to look for is an LED light. They can be used as a night light, providing enough light to get up and use the restroom or even read by.

Adjustable Speed Settings

Consider purchasing a fan that offers different speeds, like a high setting and low setting. Adjustable fan speed can offer you more customizable comfort.

Another important consideration is whether or not the fan can turn in different angles. When fans oscillate , it provides more airflow in any given space. That can make the difference between comfort for all vs. comfort for one person, especially in a large tent or RV.

Outdoor Use

When looking for the best camping fan to use outdoors, be sure that it is rated for outdoor use. That includes using the fan inside of a tent or under your RV canopy.

Hanging Hook

Many of the best camping fans come with a hanging hook. A hanging fan can easily be moved around to the area you want to use it by easily hooking it to, for instance, your RV awning.

By hanging the fan inside a tent or your RV, it will work more like a ceiling fan that disperses the rising hot air.

Noise Level

The last thing you want to hear in the great outdoors is a loud fan. Most people enjoy camping and outdoor activities because they are immersed in nature. They want to enjoy the quiet sounds of nature and get away from noisy city life.

That is why you want to pay attention to the noise level of camping fans you check out. Getting a quiet fan will surely help you relax while enjoying your trip.

7 Best Camping Fan s

Whether you are looking for a floor fan, hanging fan, or tent fan, there are several camping fans that will fit the bill. These are some of the most popular, highest-rated camping fans on the market today.

By the way, these aren't organized in ranking order. We've simply tried to include a variation of the best camping fans for different needs.

1. Rechargeable Camping Fan with Lantern

small but mighty fan

This small but mighty fan is rechargeable and includes a nifty LED lantern. The built-in rechargeable battery can work continuously for 8-36 hours.

Despite its ultra-strong airflow, this fan is quiet (<30db). So, you don't have to worry about it disturbing your sleep or relaxation.

This fan has a nifty hook to hang it from anywhere. Plus, its lantern feature has 3 brightness settings.

PGA Championship picks 2024: Expert picks, best bets for Valhalla

By cody williams | may 14, 2024, 4:53 pm edt.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy

Are there any storylines coming into the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY? You know, other than Rory McIlroy entering off of two straight wins in the midst of a 10-year major championship drought to the place where he won his last major? Other than Scottie Scheffler looking to complete the grand slam after a historic start to 2024 but also after having his first child? Other than Brooks Koepka aiming to go back-to-back at the PGA Championship? Other than Jordan Spieth still chasing the career grand slam?

Okay, so yeah, there are some storylines abound. Who knew?

This is going to be a phenomenal event where the drama is palpable from the opening tee shot this week at Valhalla. And hey, we get Michael Block back in our lives. What a world. But it's a world I'm ecstatic to be in this week as it should provide a great test, which is what we've seen from the PGA Championship in recent years. It's a stern, fair test that will ask something about every part of your game. Valhalla is no different, even with a premium on ball striking.

So where will that lead us with our PGA Championship picks? Let's find out with a full, full card that we have full of our expert picks and best bets for Valhalla.

Note:  All odds are courtesy of BetMGM unless otherwise noted. Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change. For more betting picks and advice, check out BetSided .

Golf betting record in 2024 through Wells Fargo: 13-101-0, -28.53 Units (1-39 on outrights and longshots | -0.6 units at Wells Fargo | One and Done Total for 2024: $6,365,542 (Hideki n/a at Wells Fargo (WD))

2024 PGA Championship expert picks

Pga championship picks for top 5 top 10, top 20, one and done, pga championship picks: more best bets for valhalla, pga championship picks: outright winners for valhalla in 2024, top 5 pick for the pga championship: ludvig åberg (+333).

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is the great hall that houses slain warriors being honored in the afterlife. So it'd feel wrong if the Swedish wunderkind Ludvig Åberg didn't insert his name into the mix. Lucky for him, this place could be a perfect fit for success after a wildly informative and successful major debut at The Masters. As a test of the entire tee-to-green game, Åberg is perfect, gaining 5.5 strokes or more ball striking in his last four tournaments (Masters included) and 8.6 or more in three of them. The WD from the Wells Fargo does worry me slightly, but I'm hoping it's precautionary to come up big at the PGA Championship.

Top 10 pick for the PGA Championship: Bryson DeChambeau (+250)

Maybe this is buying into fool's gold, but I loved what I saw from Bryson DeChambeau at The Masters as he finished T6, by far his best finish at Augusta. He finished T4 at the PGA Championship last year at Oak Hill, which is not dissimilar to Valhalla. More importantly, his length off of the tee should prove to be advantageous. I'm not saying he's going to win but he's actually more intriguing to me this week than Brooks Koepka based on how he can attack this golf course and how his game sets up for it.

Top 20 pick for the PGA Championship: Denny McCarthy (+350)

This is a play that's all about putting with a little bit about the rest of his game. He's one of the best putters in the world at any moment but bentgrass, which we'll have this week, might actually be his best surface to play on. His last five showings at tournaments with bentgrass greens have gone T10, T6, T7, T20, and a runner-up... and one of those finishes was a US Open, the runner-up was at the Memorial, and T10 was at the BMW. He's done it against the best. His ball striking does worry me right now but he has popped on occasion. After a quiet T6 at the Wells Fargo last week, though, I think McCarthy can get us a Top 20.

One and Done pick for the PGA Championship: Rory McIlroy

We're going with Rory at Valhalla and, professional teaser here, wait just a bit longer to get the full breakdown of why.

Min Woo Lee to finish Top 20 at the PGA Championship (+250)

I'm looking at Min Woo Lee this week and thinking about it like a Bryson-lite type of play, which is why I'm only looking Top 20 for the chef. He's one of the best drivers in the game in terms of length and that could be a huge advantage this week. While his approach play has seen him lose strokes pretty consistently, his putter has been up and down. However, he's played this major and these summer majors well of late (T18 at PGA, T5 at US Open last year) and Valhalla should make sense as a fit for him.

Byeong Hun An to finish as Top South Korean at the PGA Championship (+280, FanDuel)

Because of the Rory-Xander battle at the top of the leaderboard, you may have missed Beyong Hun An beating the rest of the field besides those two by three strokes at Quail Hollow. An has been a stud this year and now comes into the PGA Championship off of back-to-back Top 5 finishes and with a Top 20 at The Masters as well, which is three Top 20s in his last four starts. He's gained more than 5.0 strokes ball striking in each of those three finishes but has also gained more than 3.0 strokes putting in his last two starts. He could be live and with a lack of faith in Sungjae Im's form this year along with the volatile Si Woo Kim, I think An is value to finish as the Top South Korean.

Scottie Scheffler to finish Top 10 + Viktor Hovland to finish Top 20 at PGA Championship (+320, FanDuel)

I'm not going to belabor anything with Scottie Scheffler. He's the best player in the world this year by a lot and I wanted to find value in him finishing Top 10. And to do that, we're going to try and be early on Viktor Hovland. He's been up and down but gained 3.97 strokes on approach in the final round at Quail Hollow. That's his DNA and I think he could come in and make some noise at the PGA Championship where he contended a year ago. But at minimum, I think there's a bit of value in the Top 20, especially when parlayed with Scottie.

Rory McIlroy to win the PGA Championship, 1 Unit (+800)

Probably setting myself up for pain but I can't get past Rory McIlroy. The driver is a certified weapon and even more so than normal right now. But the length of Valhalla should save him from some of his weaknesses, namely with his wedges on approach. Moreover, the putter has been looking good. And oh yeah, we know that he's capable of winning at Valhalla because he's done it. He gained 15.68 strokes tee-to-green last week at Quail Hollow, the second-best tournament of his entire career tee-to-green. He's finding his complete game and it's time to end the decade-long drought.

Ludvig Åberg to win the PGA Championship, 0.7 Units (+1800)

Doubling up with Ludvig here, I think he's live to actually win. He proved he has the goods in his Masters debut by trying to track down Scheffler and has looked legitimately like one the best players in the world since he turned pro basically. His driving should be lethal at Valhalla and he's found his approach play. The odds are a little short but he's earned that and I truly believe the win equity is quite high.

Tyrrell Hatton to win the PGA Championship, 0.3 Units (+5500, FanDuel)

Going a bit off the board here, we have to look at Tyrrell Hatton. He was T9 at The Masters and has two Top 5s in his last three starts on LIV Golf as well (the other was a T14). The ball striking numbers are absolutely there but his short game has also been distinctly in the positive from a strokes gained perspective as well. His accuracy plus length off of the tee and a course that will be a complete test seems to fit the way he's playing, so I'll fire a small shot for him to come up with the win at Valhalla.

They said her husband drowned snorkeling, but she saw him walk to shore. What happened?

best travel fan reddit

A Michigan woman and her family are suing a Maui resort , the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau after her husband died while snorkeling . She doesn’t believe it was a drowning.

Patricia and Ray Johnson, along with four friends, arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui on the evening of Feb. 23, 2022, with plans to visit multiple islands over several weeks. This was the couple’s sixth time in Hawaii, and they had snorkeled the Hawaiian waters many times in the past, Patricia told USA TODAY.

On the morning of Feb. 25, some of the travelers, including Ray, went snorkeling around Wailea Beach, which fronts the resort, while Patricia opted to walk a trail that overlooks the beach. “I looked out, and I saw my husband and my friends or people out there,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m waving at him, and it hits me.” Patricia saw what looked like other snorkelers helping Ray.

She hurried down to the beach, but “things deteriorated quickly.” At first, Ray had his head above water and was returning to the beach, but then the 64-year-old fell onto his back with his head “snapped back at one point” and had to be pulled in. “I knew he was gone,” she said. 9-1-1 was called, but medical professionals failed to resuscitate Ray.

The autopsy report called Ray’s death an accidental drowning, which Patricia doesn’t believe.

“I was watching him come in, how could he be drowning?” According to her friends who were snorkeling with him, Ray was talking and also diving down under the water. At one point, he came up and said, “You gotta help me, I’m having trouble breathing,” and that’s when he decided to head back to shore. “I don’t think when people are drowning in a conditional manner, you’re going to be conversing,” she said.

What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

By a landslide, the leading cause of death for Hawaii tourists is drowning. And of ocean drownings for residents and visitors, the majority occur when snorkeling. While the ocean is powerful and unpredictable, some advocates, including the Johnsons, are trying to bring attention to a lesser-known medical condition that specifically poses risks to snorkelers and hasn’t gotten much attention over the years: Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (ROPE).

The Johnson family believes ROPE is the real cause of Ray’s death, and the lawsuit alleges that Hawaii travel entities have failed to educate the public on ROPE, resulting in “an important public health concern,” according to the complaint filed in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in the State of Hawaii in February 2024. The case should begin the fact-discovery process this week.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Fairmont Kea Lani declined to comment on the lawsuit.

“I would like to see warnings out there,” Patricia told USA TODAY. “I truly believe my husband would still be here if we’d been warned.”

How is snorkeling dangerous?

Breathing through a snorkel tube is similar to pinching your nose and breathing in through your mouth. The resistance is immediate. ROPE occurs when the negative pressure on the lungs ends up sucking bodily fluids out of the capillaries and into the airways, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta , a California-based pulmonologist.

“That snorkel resistance to airflow,” he said. “They want to breathe in but they have to breathe through that straw.”

Once fluid is in the lungs, it becomes difficult to breathe and people can experience hypoxia, or a lack of sufficient oxygen. “You slowly become weak then into a loss of consciousness,” Dasgupta said. Underlying health conditions such as heart and lung disease also increase someone’s predisposed risk for ROPE, he said.

If a person begins to feel shortness of breath, they may panic, causing more exertion, which can be life-threatening if they’re already suffering from a lack of oxygen, Dasgupta said.

Drowning by ROPE is “fundamentally different” than typical drowning when people are aspirating water or submerged and often showing signs of distress, the complaint said.

A lack of public awareness

In October 2017, after California woman – and avid swimmer and snorkeler – Nancy Peacock died while snorkeling in calm waters off the coast of Hawaii Island in a full-face mask and no signs of struggle, the Hawaii State Department created the Snorkeling Safety Sub-Committee to “address public concern about snorkel-related drownings.”

In a Snorkeling Safety Study led by the sub-committee, 50 different snorkels were tested, and the experts examined nonfatal and fatal drownings. The interim report released in July 2020 concluded that “ROPE-induced hypoxia is a factor in fatal and nonfatal snorkel drownings.” The study also had a survey conducted at Oahu’s most popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay, but only 36 participants – mostly locals – were interviewed due to the islands being closed to travel during the pandemic.

The high altitude from air travel impacting someone’s lungs may be a contributing factor, but there wasn’t enough evidence in the study to confirm this. Since getting to Hawaii requires at least a five-hour flight, it’s possible that fatigue and stress from flying could play a role in someone’s risk of drowning by ROPE.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority funded the study to “develop appropriate safety messages.” However, as of April 2024, there have not been any public-facing messages on any of the official Hawaii tourism websites. Information cards have been passed out to most Kauai and Oahu tour boat operators, the subcommittee said. Although the study is preliminary and not robust in terms of participants and even calls for further investigation, it is the only one to explore ROPE in snorkelers so far.

“Why aren’t we in Hawaii letting people know?” said Jay Stuemke, an Oahu-based attorney who filed the complaint on the Johnsons’ behalf. “Pamphlets in rooms, apps, websites, in-room videos, all types of mechanisms to warn people. It’s an easy enough thing to do. We believe had they done that, Ray would still be alive today as well as many other people.”

Snorkeling safety tips

◾ Always snorkel with a buddy, and if you can’t swim, don’t snorkel.

◾ Choose a snorkel with a wide opening and no constrictions in the mouthpiece.

◾ Learn to use the snorkel device before venturing out into water that’s too deep to stand in.

◾ If you feel shortness of breath, stay calm, remove the snorkel and get out of the water immediately, Dasgupta said.

2024 PGA Championship DFS: Optimal DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy golf picks, lineups, best strategy

Expert with over $2m in winnings gives pga dfs advice and 2024 pga championship dfs strategy for draftkings and fanduel.

best travel fan reddit

Scottie Scheffler isn't the only golfer in the 2024 PGA Championship DFS player pool coming off back-to-back victories. With Scheffler not competing since his RBC Heritage victory on April 21, Rory McIlroy was able to remind the world why he's also one of the best golfers in the world. McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship last week and partnered with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic on April 28. Neither McIlroy nor Scheffler will come with cheap PGA DFS pricing on sites like FanDuel and DraftKings, so how should you factor them into your 2024 PGA Championship DFS strategy?

Scheffler has won four of his last five tournaments with one runner-up during that span. He could be one of the most popular PGA DFS picks, so if you decide to use Scheffler in PGA DFS lineups, who should you surround him with? Corey Conners has made the cut in all 13 of his PGA Tour events this season, so can he provide value to PGA Championship DFS lineups at a cheaper price? Before you lock in your PGA DFS picks for the 2024 PGA Championship, you'll want to see the latest daily Fantasy golf picks, advice, and player pool from SportsLine's Mike McClure .

McClure is a DFS pro with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA Tour picks this season. McClure is also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every tournament 10,000 times, taking factors like statistical trends, past results, and current form into account. This allows him to find the best PGA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They're a must-see for any PGA DFS player.

Two weeks at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, McClure included Alex Noren among his top PGA DFS picks. The result: Noren secured a third-place finish, returning 86 points on DraftKings and 92.9 points on FanDuel. Anybody who included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable weekend.

In addition, McClure's model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since June 2020, nailing tournament after tournament. This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has set his sights on the 2024 PGA Championship and revealed his optimal PGA DFS advice, strategy, and player pool. Head to SportsLine now to see his top golf DFS picks for the PGA Championship 2024 .

Top 2024 PGA Championship PGA DFS picks

One of McClure's top PGA DFS picks for the 2024 PGA Championship: Jon Rahm at $11,400 on DraftKings and $11,900 on FanDuel. Rahm has won a major in two of the previous three years as he enters the second major of 2024. Rahm left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf after last season and maybe some of the rust of not playing as often showed itself in the 2024 Masters. Rahm finished T-45 in the first major of the year but with three top-10 finishes over his last five majors, the Masters performance isn't indicative of the type of golfer he is.

Rahm is one of just six golfers with odds of 15-1 or lower to win the 2024 PGA Championship, entering at 14-1 odds, so the odds favor a strong rebound for the 11-time PGA Tour winner. The 29-year-old was the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world for 60 weeks, a record at the time, before turning professional and has been the world's No. 1 among professionals. Rahm was one of only two two-time Ben Hogan Award winners as the top player in college golf when he starred at Arizona State and that success has carried over professionally. McClure expects Rahm to remind people why he's one of the best in the world at the 2024 PGA Championship.

McClure's optimal PGA DFS strategy also includes rostering Denny McCarthy ($6,300 on DraftKings, $8,100 on FanDuel), who finished T-6 at the Wells Fargo Championship last weekend. He recently finished second at the Valero Texas Open on April 7. McCarthy is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory despite finishing as the co-leader after 72 holes twice. He lost to Akshay Bhatia in a playoff at the Valero Texas Open this year and to Viktor Hovland in a playoff at the Memorial Tournament last year.

McCarthy finished in the top 25 in four of 12 events this season though, so he can provide depth to PGA Championship DFS picks with a chance at a higher return at a cheaper price tag. McCarthy's putter has separated himself from others on the PGA Tour this season and could help him finish toward the top of the 2024 PGA Championship leaderboard as he ranks third in both strokes gained: putting and one-putt percentage, sixth in putting average and first in putts per round on the PGA Tour this year. McCarthy made the cut in each of his last four PGA Championships, so McClure likes the 31-year-old to fill 2024 PGA Championship DFS lineups.  See who else to back right here .

How to set 2024 PGA Championship DFS lineups

McClure is also targeting an undervalued player who's primed to play well, giving you a huge return on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel. Picks like these could be the difference between winning your PGA DFS contests or going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here .

So what are the top PGA DFS picks for the PGA Championship 2024, and which undervalued golfer is a must-roster? Visit SportsLine now to see the complete 2024 PGA Championship DFS player pool for FanDuel and DraftKings, all from the expert who's made over $2 million in daily Fantasy sports , and find out.

Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake Beef Goes Nuclear: What to Know

The two rappers had circled one another for more than a decade, but their attacks turned relentless and very personal in a slew of tracks released over the weekend.

Drake dressed in dark clothing raps into a microphone, with a hand gesturing in the air. Kendrick Lamar, dressed in red and a dark ball cap worn backward, raps into a microphone.

By Joe Coscarelli

The long-building and increasingly testy rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake exploded into full-bore acrimony and unverifiable accusations over the weekend. Both artists rapid-fire released multiple songs littered with attacks regarding race, appropriation, sexual and physical abuse, body image, misogyny, hypocrisy, generational trauma and more.

Most relentless was Lamar, a Pulitzer Prize winner from Compton, Calif., who tends toward the isolated and considered but has now released four verbose and conceptual diss tracks — totaling more than 20 minutes of new music — targeting Drake in the last week, including three since Friday.

Each racked up millions of streams and the three that were made available commercially — “Euphoria,” “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us” — are expected to land near the top of next week’s Billboard singles chart, while seeming to, at least momentarily, shift the public perception of Drake, long a maestro of the online public arena and meme ecosystem .

In between, on Friday night, Drake released his own broadside against Lamar — plus a smattering of other recent challengers — in a teasing Instagram interlude plus a three-part track and elaborate music video titled “Family Matters,” in which he referred to his rival as a fake activist and attempted to expose friction and alleged abuse in Lamar’s romantic relationship.

But that song was followed within half an hour by Lamar’s “Meet the Grahams,” an ominous extended address to the parents and young son of Drake, born Aubrey Graham, in which Lamar refers to his rival rapper as a liar and “pervert” who “should die” in order to make the world safer for women.

Lamar also seemed to assert that Drake had more than a decade ago fathered a secret daughter — echoing the big reveal of his son from Drake’s last headline rap beef — a claim Drake quickly denied on Instagram before hitting back in another song on Sunday. (Neither man has addressed the full array of rapped allegations directly.)

On Tuesday, a security guard was shot and seriously injured outside of Drake’s Toronto home, which appeared on the cover art for Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Authorities said they could not yet speak to a motive in the shooting, but the investigation was ongoing. Representatives for Drake and Lamar did not immediately comment.

How did two of the most famous artists in the world decide to take the gloves off and bring real-life venom into an extended sparring match for rap supremacy? It was weeks, months and years in the making, with a sudden, breakneck escalation into hip-hop infamy. Here’s a breakdown.

Since late March, the much-anticipated head-to-head seemed inevitable. Following years of “will they or won’t they?” lyrical feints, Lamar hit directly on record first this year during a surprise appearance on the song “Like That” by the Atlanta rapper Future and the producer Metro Boomin, both formerly frequent Drake collaborators.

With audible disgust, Lamar invoked the track “First Person Shooter” from last year’s Drake album, “For All the Dogs,” in which a guest verse from J. Cole referred to himself, Drake and Lamar as “the big three” of modern MCs.

Lamar took exception to the grouping, declaring that there was no big three, “just big me.” He also called himself the Prince to Drake’s Michael Jackson — a deeper, more complex artist versus a troubled, pop-oriented hitmaker.

“Like That” spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as Future and Metro Boomin released two chart-topping albums — “We Don’t Trust You” and “We Still Don’t Trust You” — that were anchored by a parade of Drake’s past associates, each of whom seemed to share a simmering distaste toward the rapper, who later called the ambush a “20 v. 1” fight.

In early April, J. Cole fought back momentarily , releasing the song “7 Minute Drill,” in which he called Lamar overrated, before backtracking, apologizing and having the song removed from streaming services. But Drake soon picked up the baton, releasing a wide-ranging diss track called “Push Ups” less than a week later that addressed the field, with a special focus on Lamar’s height, shoe size and supposedly disadvantageous business dealings.

Less than a week later, Drake mocked Lamar’s lack of a response on “Taylor Made Freestyle,” a track released only on social media. It featured Drake taunting Lamar for being scared to release music at the same time as Taylor Swift and using A.I. voice filters to mimic Tupac and Snoop Dogg imploring Lamar to battle for the good of the West Coast.

“Since ‘Like That,’ your tone changed a little, you not as enthused,” Drake rapped in an abbreviated third verse, as himself. “How are you not in the booth? It feel like you kinda removed.” (“Taylor Made Freestyle” was later removed from the internet at the request of the Tupac Estate.)

But it was a seemingly tossed-off line from the earlier “Push Ups” that included the name of Lamar’s longtime romantic partner — “I be with some bodyguards like Whitney” — that Lamar would later allude to as a red line crossed, making all subject matter fair game in the songs to come. (It was this same alleged faux pas that may have triggered an intensification of Drake’s beef with Pusha T in 2018.)

How We Got Here

Even with Drake-dissing cameos from Future, Ye (formerly Kanye West), Rick Ross, the Weeknd and ASAP Rocky, the main event was always going to be between Drake, 37, and Lamar, 36, who have spent more than a decade subtly antagonizing one another in songs while maintaining an icy frenemy rapport in public.

In 2011, when Drake introduced Lamar to mainstream audiences with a dedicated showcase on his second album, “Take Care,” and an opening slot on the subsequent arena tour, the tone was one of side-eying competition. “He said that he was the same age as myself/and it didn’t help ’cause it made me even more rude and impatient,” Lamar rapped on “Buried Alive Interlude” of his earliest encounter with a more-famous Drake. (On his Instagram on Friday, Drake released a parody of the track, citing Lamar’s jealousy since then.)

The pair went on to appear together on “Poetic Justice,” a single from Lamar’s debut album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City,” in 2012, as well as “___ Problems” by ASAP Rocky the same year.

But their collaborations ceased as Drake became his generation’s premier hitmaker across styles in hip-hop and beyond, while Lamar burrowed deeper into his own psyche on knotty concept albums that brought wide critical acclaim alongside less constant commercial success.

When asked, the two rappers tended to profess admiration for one another’s skill, but seemed to trade subtle digs in verses over the years, always with plausible deniability and in the spirit of competition, leading to something of a hip-hop cold war.

The Week It Went Nuclear

Lamar’s first targeted response, “Euphoria,” was more than six minutes long and released last Tuesday morning. In three sections that raised the temperature as they built, he warned Drake about proceeding and insisted, somewhat facetiously, that things were still friendly. “Know you a master manipulator and habitual liar too,” Lamar rapped. “But don’t tell no lie about me and I won’t tell truths ’bout you.”

He accused the biracial Drake, who was born and raised in Toronto, of imitating Black American heritage and insulting him subliminally. “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress,” Lamar said. “I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon’ be direct.” And he called Drake’s standing as a father into question: “Teachin’ him morals, integrity, discipline/listen, man, you don’t know nothin’ ’bout that.”

Days later, Lamar doubled down with an Instagram-only track called “6:16 in LA,” borrowing both Drake’s “Back to Back” diss tactic from his 2015 beef with Meek Mill and a song title structure lifted from what is known as Drake’s time-stamp series of raps. Opting for psychological warfare on a beat produced in part by Jack Antonoff, Swift’s chief collaborator, Lamar hinted that he had a mole in Drake’s operation and was aware of his opponent’s opposition research.

“Fake bully, I hate bullies, you must be a terrible person,” he rapped. “Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it.”

That night, Drake’s “Family Matters” started with its own justification for getting personal — “You mentioned my seed, now deal with his dad/I gotta go bad, I gotta go bad” — before taking on Lamar’s fatherhood and standing as a man in excruciating detail. “They hired a crisis management team to clean up the fact that you beat on your queen,” Drake rapped. “The picture you painted ain’t what it seem/you’re dead.”

Yet in a chess move that seemed to anticipate Drake’s familial line of attack, Lamar’s “Meet the Grahams” was released almost immediately. “This supposed to be a good exhibition within the game,” Lamar said, noting that Drake had erred “the moment you called out my family’s name.” Instead of a rap battle, Lamar concluded after another six minutes of psychological dissection, “this a long life battle with yourself.”

He wasn’t done yet. Dispensing with subtlety, Lamar followed up again less than 24 hours later with “Not Like Us,” a bouncy club record in a Los Angeles style that delighted in more traditional rap beef territory, like juvenile insults, proudly unsubstantiated claims of sexual preferences and threats of violence.

Lamar, however, didn’t leave it at that, throwing one more shot at Drake’s authenticity as a rapper, calling him a greedy and artificial user as a collaborator — “not a colleague,” but a “colonizer.”

On Sunday evening, Drake responded yet again. On “The Heart Part 6,” a title taken from Lamar’s career-spanning series, Drake denied the accusation that he preyed on young women, indicated that he had planted the bad information about his fake daughter and seemed to sigh away the fight as “some good exercise.”

“It’s good to get out, get the pen working,” Drake said in an exhausted outro. “You would be a worthy competitor if I was really a predator.” He added, “You know, at least your fans are getting some raps out of you. I’m happy I could motivate you.”

But I second the others recommendation, if you just want white noise, there are much better options for travel than a fan.. bose makes sleepbuds, there are earphones in a strap that goes around the head so they don't fall off and will be comfortable.
