A.K.A. PALMITO OR MAXOU
Meet Max Palm is the freeskier setting the bar high for the next generation and changing the game in big mountain skiing. In 2022, Max pulled off the FWT's first-ever double backflip, proving that there are no limits to what can be done. He's been throwing tricks off cliffs that, not long ago, were expected to be straight air territory.
It's safe to say that keeping an eye on Max's journey in the coming years is going to be one wild ride!

Freeride World Tour 2023 Athlete Roster
 Mountainwatch | Press Release
Pully, Swizterland: The 2023 Freeride World Tour consists of five events and 43 riders, but these are merely numbers. This world-class spectacle would not be possible without the total commitment of the worldâs best freeriders, ready to drop no matter the physical pain or mental pressure. Ready to drop regardless of the conditions Mother Nature dishes up on the day. Ready to drop to satisfy the seemingly unquenchable thirst of their audience, who feed off the next big trick or near-impossible line. For the past 16 years, each roster has brought the FWT to life, and this yearâs list promises to do the sameâŠ
World Champion Jess Hotter â who was also recently nominated as the best female athlete in New Zealand â is back to defend her title, with eight others hot on her heels to take the crown. Whispers of the three-time FWT runner-up Hedvig Wessel returning to the action are also circulating. She is focusing on new projects, but could be back for an event wildcard.

The battles are always intense in the ski men category, and World Champion Maxime Chabloz will have to fight off a talent-packed field â including the likes of Carl Regner and Max Palm â to be crowned again. Newcomer Max Hitzig, who won last yearâs FWT Fieberbrunn event, is hungry for more podium finishes, as is the unyielding Mayor of Stomptown, Reine Barkered, returning as an injury wildcard.

Snowboard Men
The Sultan of Steez, Blake Moller, will have his hands full trying to defend his title, with no shortage of new talent and seasoned legends in the mix. Watch out for Camille Armandâ who is hungry to go one better than last year â as well as rookies Liam Riviera and Holden Samuels, and former FWT athlete Jonathan Penfield.

Snowboard Women
Can Tiphanie Perrotin hold off a strong contingent and double down after winning the FWT in her rookie year? She will have to hold off FWT22 Runner-Up Erika Vikander and the ever-impressive Manuela Mandl, who won Xtreme Verbier last year. Katie Anderson and Anna Orlova have also requalified, rounding out an extremely impressive female snowboard roster.

There it is folks, 43 of the worldâs best freeriders ready for battle. How will their qualifications translate to success in the big mountains? BD TEAM RIDER - MAX PALM
Freerider // Chamonix, France
With a 3-time Scandinavian Big Mountain Champion as mother and a mountain guide as father, Max was born into the mountain life. Despite his young age, he is already one of the most decorated skiers.
He has won the Freeride junior tour twice in a row, is the youngest skier to ever win the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championship and is the current Junior World Champion. He left a mark on history, as ââRookie wildcardââ who won a FWT Stage with the first ever double backflips.
Although his skiing in many ways is ruthless, he is nothing but humble and kind. Max was born and raised in Chamonix with Swedish parents, which explains how he can take the typical Scandinavian hard-charging skiing and combine it with the big mountain knowledge and style known from the alp region.

Max Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner will join Tiger Woods on Jupiter Links Golf Club when TGL â the tech-infused team golf league led by Woods, Rory McIlroy and TMRW Sports â begins play early next year.
âI have already shared my excitement and optimism for TGL as a league and product,â Woods said in a statement. âNow that we have finalized our roster with a team of world-class golfers, I am even more confident that this group will proudly represent the Jupiter area and connect with our fans for years to come.â
Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner, is Jupiter Links GC highest-ranked player at No. 9 in the world and Kim is a three-time Tour winner and was a rare bright spot for the 2022 International Presidents Cup team. Kisner, 40, is a four-time Tour winner and has split time this season between playing the Tour and as an analyst for NBC Sports and Golf Channel.
âI feel very privileged to have played in the Tiger Era. Having the opportunity to compete against and alongside the G.O.A.T. has been one of the things Iâll remember most at the end of my career,â Kisner said in a statement. âWhile I know we will have a lot of fun as a team with me, Tiger, Max and Tom, I also know when Tigerâs competitive fire kicks in, we are going to be ready to play and win. This is the perfect team to bring both fun and competition together at the same time.â
Jupiter Links GC also unveiled the teamâs logo which features a âPalm Flagâ and is set against a background of âTiger Red.â

The inaugural TGL season was pushed back a year after the dome collapsed on the original SoFi Center last November. A partial power failure caused the dome to deflate and there were no injuries. The new SoFi Center will seat 1,500 fans wrapping around the âfield of play,â which is roughly the size of a football field (97 yards long and 50 yards wide).
The six TGL teams will include four Tour players competing in a two-hour, made-for-television window using alternate-shot and singles formats.

American Rookie Wins First Freeride World Tour Event of the Season
Addison rafford is part of a cadre of younger riders shaking up the tour this season..

Earlier this season, SKI guessed that rookies would continue pushing the envelope on the Freeride World Tour in 2023, citing an explosion of young talent emerging from the qualifier series. This prediction panned out during the first stop of the Freeride World Tour at Baqueira-Beret , with 21-year-old American rookie Addison Rafford securing first place in the womenâs category after a spotless run.
Before the event started in the morning, competitors were thrown a curveball when an avalanche ripped down the center of the Baciver, the competition face. The already nervy atmosphere, replete with pre-comp jitters, turned darker, and many wondered if the event organizers should postpone the competition. âAll the riders got pretty scared and wanted to cancel the comp,â said Max Palm , winner of this year’s and last season’s Baqueira-Beret competition in the men’s category.
Related: FWT Baqueira Beret stop confirmed despite sketchy conditions
However, Rafford, whoâs come-up required skiing notoriously questionable conditions in the Freeride World tour qualifier competitions, was too excited to ski an enormous big mountain face to worry about the avalanche.
âI was just so stoked to finally be able to ski something with no traverse tracks in the landings,â she said. Plus, she knew that âit wasnât gonna slide when I was skiing it because they [the event organizers] were ski cutting it, and they were definitely following all the right safety precautions. They arenât gonna send us on a face that still had stuff that needed to slide.â
Rafford kept it simple during her run, lining up a few quick drops on the skierâs right side of the venue before charging into one final cliff, which she stomped. The judges scored her at 72.67, allowing her to eke out a narrow lead over Molly Armanino, another American rider.Â
Watch: Addison Rafford’s winning run at FWT Baqueira-Beret 2023
âIt felt super good, like so great, but not what I was expecting at all,â said Rafford of her winning run.
While the American skierâs already carved out a niche as an athlete, nabbing sponsorships from big names like Smith, Sturtevants, and Black Crows, the Baqueira-Beret FWT stop was her first time on the world stage. Unlike many younger riders on the Tour, Rafford took to freeride later in life. She grew up skiing in Sun Valley, eventually joining the local mogul team. She competed in moguls until 11th grade when her coaches were let go. With her favorite coaches gone, and older friends graduating from the team, Rafford decided it was time for something new.
Briefly adrift, she eventually joined her mountainâs freeride team and started entering big mountain competitions. After graduating high school, she battled through one frustrating season of crashing on the Qualifier circuit before racking up enough points to earn a ticket to the big leagues.Â
As the 2023 Tour unfolds, Rafford hopes to push herself further, taking on challenging new lines and throwing tricks. âNow Iâm confident with line selection,â she said, âI know next time I go out to compete, I can feel a little bit more confident in my line choice and then hopefully pick definitely some bigger features and add some more things into it.â
On the menâs side, Sweden’s Palm, who needs no introduction, proved that his win at Baqueira-Beret last year wasnât a fluke. While his skiing was more reserved this past weekend (no double backflips this time), the judges appreciated his precision and fluidity, handing him the day’s highest score. Palm found it reassuring âto be able to win with a run that I donât have to be at my limit.â
Watch: Max Palm’s winning run at FWT Baqueira-Beret 2023
The 20-year-old skier has reported in multiple interviews that he rarely gets nervous before competing. However, he did note that his run at Baqueira-Beret had one close call, which gave him a scare. Early in his run, he nearly crashed into a rock wall when he overcooked his first 360.
âThat was the only part I was scared of,â said Palm. âI went a little bit bigger than I was expecting, so I almost jumped straight into the rock. But I managed to like land with my ski and bounce back. When you see it on the GoPro, itâs insane. Like I came so close.â
Both Palm and Rafford represent a generational shift taking place on the Tour. The old guardâthe Aymar Navarros, Kristofer Turdells, and Reine Barkeredsâare suddenly struggling to meet the explosive talents of the younger riders who spin and flip their way down the mountain. These freestyle-oriented athletes havenât foregone the discipline of pure freeride, which emphasizes fluidity and technical line selection. Instead, they marry freestyle and freeride in an awe-inspiring reinvigoration of the sport.

âItâs weird because I didn’t even think of myself as a part of it [the next generation of freeriders] until literally like the past 24 hours,â said Rafford. âThe past like three or four years, there’s been so many new young guns coming up. And even if you like, look down the qualifying circuit and the junior circuit like the young kids ⊠the level of skiing is insane.â
This shift is bittersweet. While we viewers were treated to an unprecedented spectacle this past weekend, we also had to say farewell to Navarro, who announced his departure from the Tour after years of throwing down gnarly big mountain lines. The hometown Baqueira-Beret crowd roared when Navarro skied into the finish corral, and after he removed his goggles, he brushed tears from his eyes.

â Never in my wildest dreams this kid from a small town called Les (Val dâAran) would have imagined me competing in my house in front of 5000+ people screaming my name,â wrote Navarro in an Instagram post after the competition. âThank you thank you and thank you for all these years and for all the love you gave me yesterday at the Baciver.â

2023 Baqueira Beret Pro
Athletes and FWT staff returned to the Spanish Pyrenees for one of the hottest events of the season. The Baqueira Beret Pro played host once again, after last yearâs amazing debut at this venue, with a weather window spanning from the 28th of January to the 2nd of February 2023.
Conditions proved tricky for competitors at the Baciver venue, with wind-affected snow at the top opening up to more playful powder in the lower sections. But this didnât deter the athletes, who all went large to impress the judges and gain those valuable points.
