[Review] Jean-Luc Ponty: Imaginary Voyage (1976)
Ponty’s most proggy adventure to date, featuring past/future members of Frank Zappa, Genesis and Jethro Tull.
Kronomyth 9.0: An imaginary garden with real toads of the short forest in it.
The prog connection to Jean-Luc Ponty has never been stronger than on “Imaginary Voyage,” which lives up to its name as a magical journey of mythic proportions. It has more than a little to do with Frank Zappa , what with a pair of past alums (Ponty, Fowler) and future FZ member Allan Zavod on keyboards, though Ponty generates a warmer, dreamier vibe than Zappa.
The first side of music features five shorter songs which showcase the talents of new guitarist Daryl Stuermer (soon to be written into the great book of Genesis ). Daryl’s acoustic jazz guitar on “New Country” and “The Gardens of Babylon” is a side of Steurmer that Genesis fans didn’t see, and more what you’d expect from someone who cited Wes Montgomery as an influence. Of course, Jimi Hendrix was another influence, which is evident on his solo for the funktastic “Tarantula.” Ponty shares the spotlight with Stuermer on the first side, Zavod on the second side, and slips in a spacey solo with “Wandering on the Milky Way.”
At the moment, I can’t think of another Ponty album I enjoy so much as Imaginary Voyage . The violin becomes a protean voice, as filthy as a funk guitar and as free as a butterfly, classical and country and confoundingly elusive. Behind Ponty is a stellar fusion outfit with prog credibility from once and future members of Frank Zappa, Genesis and Jethro Tull . It’s a proggier, dreamier and more varied work than his first Atlantic album ( Upon the Wings of Music ), more likely to please fans who found Camel a pleasant ride. With time, the arpeggiated sequencer patterns and formulaic flights of fancy would grow dull, but here it’s all wonder and imagination.

I was with Zappa’s bands and later with Mahavishnu and even when I started my own band, these engineers who were creating new sound devices, pedals, and phase shifters, and this and that, and delays... would come to a famous musician like Zappa to [get him to] use it, you know. And so Zappa would say to me, check it out, after he’d tried it... and pass the device to me [to try out]. And that's how I was able to try all these sound devices. Jean-Luc Ponty

The first solo visit to Japan by the legend of Jean-Luc Ponty, which was realized in 1979. Introducing a hidden treasure live album that conveys a stage that can be called a monument to the history of Japanese and Western music. Two performances are included in this work. Three recordings of the stereo soundboard recording of the “February 4, 1979: Shibuya Public Hall” performance on DISC 1 and the full audience recording of the following “February 5: Nakano Sunplaza” performance on DISC 2-3. It is a group. First, let’s look back on the schedule at that time and check the contents of this work.
・ February 4: Shibuya Public Hall ← ★ This work DISC 1 ★ ・ February 5: Nakano Sunplaza ← ★ This work DISC 2-3 ★ ・ February 6: Osaka Mido Kaikan
Above, all 3 performances. This work is a coupling title of two live albums that recorded two performances in Tokyo. Let’s introduce each one individually.
● The secret sea ・ Enigmatic Ocean Part 1-4 (★) / Mirage (★) / The Struggle of the Turtle to the Sea Part 1-3 ● Cosmic Messenger ・ Cosmic Messenger (★) / The Art of Happiness / Don’t Let the World Pass You By / I Only Feel Good With You / Ethereal Mood (★) / Egocentric Molecules (★) ● Others ・ Aurora: Aurora, Part 1-2 (★) ・ Departure to Taoyuan: Imaginary Voyage Part 1-4 / New Country (★) * Note: “★” marks are songs that can be listened to even on the first day (DISC 1).
…… And it looks like this. The scale of 1 hour and 54 minutes is incomparable to “LIVE” which is only 40 minutes, and the four suites “Aurora, Part 1-2”, “Imaginary Voyage Part 1-4” and “Enigmatic Ocean Part 1-4” Full performance of “The Struggle of the Turtle to the Sea Part 1-3”. In particular, “ENIGMATIC OCEAN” and “COSMIC MESSENGER” are large-scale behaviors that show off most of the album. It is a magnificent picture scroll that is more suitable to be called “the culmination of 70’s Ponti” than one concert. The highest peak master of FM sound board that symbolized the first visit to Japan and the original full recording that appeared for the first time. It is a set of 3 definitive editions that set 2 hidden treasure live albums. A new masterpiece from Japan that is proud of the world. Please enjoy it carefully and fully.
★ The stereo soundboard recording of the legendary first visit to Japan “February 4, 1979: Shibuya Public Hall” will be on DISC 1, and the audience recording of the next “February 5: Nakano Sunplaza” will be on DISC 2-3. A set of 3 arranged. The Shibuya Sound Board (DISC 1) can be enjoyed for about an hour, which is about 1.5 times that of the traditional version “LIVE”. Nakano Audience Recording (DISC 2-3) is the original master for the first time, and it is a long complete recording of about 115 minutes. You can experience the full show where most of “ENIGMATIC OCEAN” and “COSMIC MESSENGER” are shown, including 4 suites.

On side 2, the high-speed recordings in "Imaginary Voyage Part 1" are absolutely breathtaking: the comparison with Yes' "Sound Chaser" is inevitable. The epic track "Imaginary Voyage" may be uninterruptedly listened without any problem, although Stuermer's electric guitar solos have nothing really spectacular. Rating: 4.5 stars

Part 1 | Part 2 American violinist Stuff Smith once said about the young, classically trained and self taught jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, "He plays violin like Coltrane plays saxophone."Born in 1942, Ponty has almost single-handedly taken jazz violin from the swing era into modern jazz, and beyond. At rock musician Frank Zappa 's urging, Ponty moved to the States in 1973 to record and tour ...

An imaginary voyage is a kind of narrative in which utopian or satirical representation (or some popular science content) is put into a fictional frame of travel account.. It is a very archaic narrative technique preceding romance and novelistic forms. Two known examples from Greek literature are Euhemerus' Sacred History and Iambulus' Islands of the Sun. ...
