Fate of the original 12 Constitution Class Starships

Discussion in ' Star Trek - The Original & Animated Series ' started by Jedi Marso , Aug 4, 2016 .

I've seen people discussing the notion (considered by some to be canon, and not by others) that the Enterprise was the only surviving, original-build Connie Class ship by the end of Kirk's five year mission. So what happened to the others? We know the fate of some of them but I'm not sure if they are all accounted for. What we do know: USS Constellation was lost in the Doomsday Machine. USS Lexington \ USS Excalibur \------- All lost in The Ultimate Computer USS Potemkin / USS Hood / USS Defiant was lost in The Tholian Web USS Exeter lost its whole crew in the Omega Glory, although the ship herself was intact. Anybody know about the others? (Note: the Enterprise and her sister ships had been around for a while by the time of TOS; it's possible some of them were lost prior to Kirk commanding the Enterprise.)

USS Intrepid was lost in "The Immunity Syndrome." USS Farragut has uncertain class, but is established behind-the-scenes as Constitution -class. She suffered heavy losses while fighting the cloud creature that was ultimately killed in "Obsession." Note that the class of the USS Republic is also uncertain.

I think the novel had it that only Enterprise survived. I can see others "vanishing" during a Section 31 stunt with only Enterprise coming back (publically) Rittenhouse instead of Marcus...

As far as we know there could have been a lot more or less than 12 Constitution class starships in the era of TOS. Kirk's statement in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" only proves that at that moment there were 12 (or possibly 13) ships in starfleet sufficiently similar for the purposes of Kirk's statement about how rare ships equal to the Enterprise w ere. We don't know if Kirk as counting ships by subclass, class, superclass or whatever, counting all starships or counting starships by assignment type (such as five year missions). We know that all starships in that era had saucers, engineering hulls, 2 nacelles, and 3 struts connecting them, and in the same arrangement as Constitutuon class ships, because Spock described it as "starship configuration" in "the Doomsday Machine". We don't know if all the starships seen in TOS were Constitution class or if they belonged to different classes that looke very similar on the outside.

Though I must admit I like the idea that Starship and by extension a "starship commander" (something said in both DDM and Errand of Mercy) is a special thing above and beyond just any space ship, even in the Federation starfleet.
^^Indeed, beyond the logical fallacy, Spock only says "by configuration" to drive home the point that he is unable to make a detailed study and has to rely on what amounts to a silhouette. Essentially, he's saying "I guess this is a starship, but since I'm going just by configuration, I might be in error". Which he of course is not. Timo Saloniemi

The ten most popular live action versions of the starship enterprise, according to reddit.

Fans have seen several versions of Star Trek's USS Enterprise, from The Original Series to modern shows like the upcoming Strange New Worlds.

Series like Star Trek: Picard and  Star Trek: Lower Decks have shown that there's still plenty of life in the  Star Trek IP. The Starship Enterprise is one of the most recognizable and iconic science fiction vehicles ever conceived. The flagship of the Federation has been the setting for hundreds of hours of adventures in Star Trek television shows and feature films dating back to 1966.

RELATED:  Every Star Trek TV Series Ranked By Popularity

The mighty vessel, in various forms, symbolizes the hopes and dreams of the human race who creator Gene Roddenberry imagined would be enlightened dramatically hundreds of years from today. Recently, a Reddit thread created by u/ZomCom13 asked fellow r/startrek members what their favorite live-action USS Enterprise is.

The Future Enterprise-D

The heavily armored Enterprise-D, from one of the best  The  Next Generation  episodes ,  "All Good Things, " rescued retired Admiral Jean Luc Picard, Captain Beverly Crusher, Geordi, Data, and Worf from Klingons attacking the USS Pasteur in one of three time periods Picard was traversing in the story.

The "beautiful" enhanced Enterprise-D featured advanced phaser cannons and a third nacelle providing the ability to travel at warp 10, making it a "big and powerful" dreadnought, according to Redditor SteveBliss88  in response to another Redditor, Radamand 's description of the one "in the final episode where Riker was captain of the Enterprise."

The Enterprise-C

The Enterprise-C's presence in the 24th century, as the result of traveling through a temporal anomaly, caused an entirely new timeline to emerge. "Yesterday" welcomed back a fallen crew member, Natasha Yar, in one of  Star Trek 's best time-travel stories .  Enterprise-C's absence from its own time spawned a 22-year war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in which Starfleet believed it was doomed to defeat.

The C's sole appearance in Star Trek motion picture made an impression on Redditor Unpleasant_Grape who felt its basic design distinguished it from other efforts with its "proportions and perfect circles." Redditor rtwoctwo felt a similar sentiment adding it "bridges the gap between the original and Next Generation design very well."

The Kelvin Universe Enterprise

The reimagined flagship and pride of Starfleet in JJ Abrams' Star Trek universe appears relatively small on screen but features a realistic interpretation of weapons deployment and its hybrid of hydroelectric and nuclear-powered engines. She managed to survive a black hole and decaying orbit in its first two outings but succumbed to a swarm attack from a mutated Starfleet crew in 2016's Star Trek Beyond .

RELATED:  The 10 Best Star Trek Movies, According to Reddit

Redditor pi2madhatter  reacted to the modified classic starship for JJ Abram's 2009-2016 trilogy with mixed analysis. They felt the overall design was progressive "which gives the ship a sleeker look," while at the same time, writing "it looks so awkward especially supporting those bulbous nacelles."

The NX-01 Enterprise was the first warp-five capable human starship made possible by the inventor of warp drive, Zefram Cochrane and Henry Archer, the father of the eventual captain, Jonathan Archer for four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise . The NX-01 ushered in a new era for United Earth's space travel program that led to the formation of the United Federation of Planets.

The NX-01's impression of realism struck Redditor gerusz , who theorized it is likely the most accurate depiction of a present-day effort to construct the Enterprise that "if you gave those technologies to a modern space agency, that is exactly what they would come up with," with perhaps some modifications to the living quarters.

The Enterprise-B

The Enterprise-B was commanded by Captain John Harriman during its shakedown run when it received a distress call from two El-Aurian ships trapped in a void that would later come to be known as The Nexus in Star Trek Generations . Its lack of a tractor beam and photon torpedoes made the rescue tricky and resulted in the apparent death of James T. Kirk.

The design of the Excelsior-class starship was aesthetically pleasing to a Redditor nicknamed jimmyray01 who thought the model displayed was "on par with other Starfleet ship designs," adding "I really wish we'd been able to see it for more than just 10 minutes in one movie."

The Original NCC-1701

The heavy cruiser that embarked on several five-year missions ending with the James T. Kirk era was the hub of the original 1966-1969 Star Trek series and was in service for twenty years. Its multicultural crew included a Pacific Islander helmsman, a Russian-born navigator, a Scottish chief engineer, a southern American chief surgeon, an African American linguist, and a Vulcanian first officer named Spock.

RELATED:  10 Unpopular Opinions About Star Trek The Original Series, According To Reddit

The very first NCC-1701 USS Enterprise's "proportions really work," according to Redditor Fenriswolf_9 because they're "original and iconic." With the emergence of the Disco-prise, they "would love to see one of the 3D artists who make models of the various Star Trek ships apply the Discovery surface detail and lighting aesthetic to the TOS original without changing the proportions, angles, and configuration."

The Disco-prise

The graphically updated Constitution-class USS Enterprise from the pre-Kirk era of Star Trek is set to embark on new missions into the Final Frontier when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts on Paramount+ in May 2022. It will be under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, Kirk's predecessor.

Redditor Guyver0 was taken back with the simplicity of the new original Enterprise design first seen in  Discovery writing it "feels like the best of both worlds." Additionally, Redditor  SixIsNotANumber  agreed, labeling it "gorgeous, and has me really looking forward to the release of Strange New Worlds ."

The Enterprise-E

One year after losing the galaxy-class Enterprise-D, Jean Luc Picard took command of the sovereign-class Enterprise-E. It saw action against the Borg in the 21st century, the Sona in the Briar Patch, and was nearly destroyed by a Reman-born Romulan praetor named Shinzon, a clone of Picard. Thanks to Mr. Data's sacrifice at the climax of  Star Trek: Nemesis , the ship remained in service.

Redditor earth2chercomeincher praised it as "the sexiest starships Starfleet ever commissioned," citing its intimidating design that  SirJiggart  simplified as it "looks like a shark and bites like one." Furthermore, thread creator u/ZomCom13  called it "the most powerful but practical of" all the Enterprises to date.

The Enterprise-D

For seven seasons of Next Generation and one feature film, the Enterprise-D traveled to every corner of the Alpha Quadrant "to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one's gone before." The saucer section impacted and was entombed on the surface of Veridian III following an engagement with rogue Klingons under the command of the Duras Sisters in Generations .

The stylish appearance of the reimagined Enterprise won over Redditor Fragraham because "when you see all the tiny windows lit up on the neck, evoking the image of a skyscraper in space," the audience discovers "it's a straight up flying city." Redditor Frogman1480 agreed "it's basically a luxury cruise ship in space," adding its "a perfect ship to host delegates and species on diplomatic missions."

The Refitted NCC-1701 (A)

Beginning with its launch in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the refitted NCC-1701 USS Enterprise investigated an approaching hostile intelligence in search of its creator on Earth. Later, it competed in an epic cat and mouse hunt with Khan Noonian Singh before being destroyed intentionally by Admiral James T. Kirk above the Genesis Planet. By the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , the crew was back aboard the new NCC-1701-A.

Thread administrator u/ZomCom13 admires the refitted big screen interpretation of the original NCC-1701 (and later A) USS Enterprise after its destruction in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock . "I like the refit model because it is the most aesthetically pleasing to me." Fellow Redditor, mathazar felt sentimental summarizing it as a "classy looking ship that I built a model of it as a kid."

RE: PERFORMANCE EVALUATION REPORTS: NCC-91480, NCC-90500, NCC-97667, & NCC-92190

This report describes initial qualitative and quantitative findings for several new variant starship classes deployed in the past several months. These starships rep// resent an essential step on the path to glory for the Terran Empire. While there is merit in pursuing generational leaps in technology, it would be foolish for us to simultaneously neglect incremental progress // and improved flexibility as we see more new construction come online. In the wake of years of conflict and tragedy, we see the demands on Starfleet expand almost daily. To meet those needs we must be creative // and maximize the yield from our efforts by matching the platform to the mission. When we do not have an appropriate weapon to accomplish the mission, // we must prioritize the development of new class variants based on existing or planned construction to meet these needs quickly and efficiently.

This is, of course, a long-standing tradition in Starfleet, but is especially relevant now as we utilize advancements in rapid prototyping, decalithium power systems, and // confiscated technologies from Imperial conquests. Starships have never been more modular, and to bring the Empire’s might to bear we must be willing to adapt our hardware as well as our tactics.

Review the attached readiness reports and mission profiles for several new starship variants launched earlier this year. //  This report has been compiled from reviews of logs, internal sensor data, and crew interviews. From these results I remain bullish on the viability of further “Flight II” variants, // and expect their versatility to be a powerful arrow in the Imperial quiver .//

U.S.S CABOT – NCC-91480

The Cabot was initially slated to be a the eleventh Shran-class starship to be commissioned for long-range anti-piracy duty, but the escalation of tensions within the Klingon Empire suggested a need for a starship that combined the Shran’s strategic endurance // with a heavier alpha-strike capability. The Cabot features two large dorsal pylons attached to the main hull inboard of the nacelles. These pylons // mount versatile probe and warhead launchers. Compared to the Shran, the Cabot has much more limited cargo space as // a large portion of its troop bays have been sacrificed for an increased magazine size. // To accommodate these new systems, the Cabot’s sensor and deflector systems are more tightly focused favoring accuracy in a small area over general situational awareness.

U.S.S. BOZEMAN – NCC-90500

Inspired by the Soyuz-class that saw service in the late 23 rd century, the U.S.S. Bozeman began life as a Reliant-Class Advanced Light Cruiser. // Compact and versatile, the Reliants are an unglamourous but vital asset to the Imperial Fleet. As the God-Emperor Napoleon once said, “Amateurs discuss tactics, but professionals study logistics.” // With this increased logistical capacity, along with the launch of the multi-mission light cruiser U.S.S. Clarke and her sister ships, we have seen a rapid replenishment of Starfleet’s frigate and light cruiser // Order of Battle.

To supplement these lighter units, The Bozeman was earmarked to pilot a “Heavy Frigate” program. Starting with the Reliant-class space frame, the Bozeman received a suite // of additional sensors, variable payload launchers, communications equipment, and an extended aft superstructure housing a third shuttlebay.

With these improved command and control facilities, the Bozeman could serve as a small squadron flagship, orchestrating survey or defense operations for a frontier sector, working in concert with other light units. // During fleet engagements, the Bozeman is perfectly suited to coordinate screening elements and remove combat load from the larger fleet combatants.

While the increased capabilities and firepower do make the Bozeman superior to its Reliant cousins in every measurable sense, the resources required to build it are 70-85% of the tactically superior Shenzhou class, // so it is likely that if any more Bozemans are made they will be Reliants slated for an upgrade, amortizing the increased cost over a longer service life.

star trek starships reddit

/ /I.S.S. TRAILBLAZER - NCC-97667

Even for the most bellicose among us, I will be the first to admit that the Trailblazer is a bit of a monstrosity. // When I initially reviewed the proposal to modify the sleek Pathfinder-class Trailblazer into a gnarled mess of right angles covered with phasers, sensor arrays, and launch tubes, I // almost had the engineer responsible shot into space. But after enduring a bit of her groveling, I came to see Commander Whetu’s reasoning: by combining the extremely robust and sensitive sensor suite of the Pathfinder // with a variety of weapons and particle emitters, the Trailblazer could become a valuable long-range laboratory able to conduct large-scale experiments using exotic particles and radiation.

Of course, the Pathfinder’s warp power system is not designed to handle such a huge collection of // weapons arrays, so in a combat scenario it would not be able to make use of its entire arsenal at once. That said, with its state-of-the art sensor suite, it could use its instruments to detect weaknesses in a target’s shielding and tune its specialized equipment to exploit any weaknesses it discovered in real time.

//U.S.S. PEGASUS - NCC-92190

The Andromeda-class Exploration Cruiser was one of the earlier examples of sixth-generation Starfleet technology, and it proved itself a capable but temperamental starship during Operation // Delta Falling and the subsequent Iconian Campaigns. Still, its versatility, survivability and range made it a powerful // exploration cruiser at the hands of an experienced crew. After a small round of upgrades, the base Andromeda design has had its kinks ironed out.

One of the newest Andromeda-class starships, the U.S.S. Pegasus was heavily damaged at the Battle of Empersa but was able to return to Spacedock under its own power. // While discussing its repairs, ASDB engineers proposed a variety of upgrades and structural modifications. Compared to the Andromeda, its power systems have been supplemented to drive an advanced suite of // heavy defensive systems. This comes at the tradeoff of lower power output for the Structural Integrity Field generators and some C2 capacity, but it should provide an interesting mix of capabilities as a heavy explorer capable of long-range exploration and defense.

CONCLUSIONS

// Any imperial officer worth their salt knows that vigilance and adaptability are key tools to survival. This is true for the individual and for the // starship. The true strength of Starfleet and its Engineering Corps lies in its diverse persp//oyalty to the Emperor, of course, but also its ability to innovate when it comes to tools of viol //ploration.

UPDATING 25TH CENTURY STARSHIPS

In the 11+ years that Star Trek Online has been boldly going, we have brought hundreds of ships from the Star Trek Universe to life. Not only have we recreated ships featured in Star Trek shows and films, but we have also developed a unique language for what starships look like in the second decade of Star Trek’s 25th century.

Beginning with Age of Discovery, we found ourselves building Starships to an ever-increasing level of detail, and over the past few years have remastered many of our fan-favorite ‘canon’ ships to an unprecedented fidelity. But this has left a gap in quality between the newly-remastered “canon” starships and some of our older “STO-Original” ships meant to be the evolution of canon-fan favorites such as the Galaxy to the Andromeda or the Intrepid to the Pathfinder.

And so, when we decided that the plan for our next huge story arc was going to be the Mirror Universe, we got excited, as this was the perfect time to address that quality gap. We wanted our STO original designs, starships made with our signature style, to match the fidelity and detail we had been able to imbue in the starships from Discovery and our recent Legendary ship remasters. In the Mirror Universe, the 25th Century Starfleet would be the ‘bad guys’ and we could set aside time to make sure their ships were up to snuff.

This meant that we could remaster some of our favorite 25th-century designs, and in addition, create some new variants to add variety to the updated Terran Imperial Fleet. (NOTE: These new variants are NOT available as playable ships for the time being!).

The goal with these changes was to be able to put these STO-era starships next to our remastered Galaxy or Intrepid class and have them both co-exist with a similar quality and attention to detail. We can’t wait for you all to get a closer look at the hard work that has been done, and we hope you enjoy taking some of these ships out for another spin.

Here is a breakdown of all the Starfleet ships that have been updated. Some were total remasters, while others were less-extensive material and detail updates. If you have one of these ships, make sure to visit the Ship Customization interface and select the proper preset, then apply it to your ship, to see the update correctly.

  • Andromeda Class Exploration Cruiser
  • Concorde Class Command Battlecruiser
  • Gagarin Class Battlecruiser
  • Edison Class Warship
  • Pathfinder Class Long-Range Science Vessel
  • Reliant Class Advanced Light Cruiser
  • Scott Class Miracle Worker Cruiser
  • Shran Class Pilot Escort
  • Somerville Class Intel Science Vessel
  • Sutherland Class Advanced Science Vessel

See you out there, thattaway!

14 Classic Science Fiction Ships Recreated In Starfield

Grab that sci-fi slogan you’ve long embedded into your vocabulary, it’s time to hit the stars with these classic vessels.

Firefly's Serenity flies in Starfield.

Starfield lets you take the controls of massive starships to both cruise the cosmos and blast hostile spacefarers into smithereens. It also has a pretty snappy, powerful ship-building feature, so you can come up with your own ship designs or, if you’re so inclined, recreate some of science fiction’s most legendary vessels.

Here we’ve rounded up 14 of the coolest spaceships fans have recreated so far, including vessels from Battlestar Galactica , Star Wars , and that damn Joss Whedon show with the undying fanbase.

Buy Starfield: Amazon | Best Buy | GameStop

Battlestar Galactica ’s Battlestar Galactica

A remake of the Battlestar Galactica sits in Starfield's ship builder.

Starfield ’s ship builder skews more toward blocky designs, making ships with smoother curves a little harder to recreate. But that didn’t stop VRboi69420 from cranking out a solid Galactica build based on the 2003 Battlestar Galactica remake. At least you won’t have to worry about frakin’ Cylons invading this one.

Firefly ’s Serenity

A remake of Serenity from Firefly flies through space in Starfield.

Ni Hao! Sorry, but there’ll never be a gorram season two of Firefly , and that one somewhat good-looking video game adaptation that recorded lines from the show’s cast is probably never happening ( check out Rebel Galaxy Outlaw instead ). But Firefly fans gotta keep flying. Reddit user neok182 built a very faithful tribute to the ill-fated space western by way of a Serenity build. We hope they aim to misbehave.

Star Wars Consular-Class Space Cruiser

A remake of a starship from Star Wars flies through Starfield.

DaMightyMilkman put together their own, remarkably faithful-looking recreation of a classic Star Wars ship: a Consular-Class Space Cruiser. These first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace .

Talespin ’s Sea Duck

A remake of the Sea Duck from Talespin sits in Starfield's ship builder.

Okay this technically isn’t science fiction, but it’s still pretty cool looking. While you can’t recruit Baloo or other furry friends in Starfield , Reddit user okamishojo did the next best thing : Rebuilding the show’s “Sea Duck” vessel in Starfield , fittingly renamed “Space Duck.”

Halo ’s UNSC Pelican

A remake of the Pelican from Halo sits in Starfield's ship builder.

In Starfield you certainly will need a weapon, but if you also need a Pelican, check out SteamingHotDataDump’s Pelican picture guide over on Reddit. Just keep it away from any particularly nasty parasitic life forms while you’re out there.

Star Trek ’s USS Enterprise

SP7R put together a great tutorial video on how to make your own USS Enterprise in Starfield . What they can’t help you with are any instances of extra-dimensional beings just showing up to mess with your day.

The Mandalorian ’s Razor Crest

A remake of the Razor Crest from The Mandalorian sits in Starfield's ship builder.

While the Mantis might be one of the best bounty hunter ships in Starfield , AlanaSP has built an excellent remake of this hunter-worthy Star Wars vessel fit for traversing an entirely different galaxy.

Star Trek ’s U.C.S. Voyager

A remake of the Voyager from Star Trek flies in Starfield.

Hailing from what’s perhaps my second favorite Star Trek series, GrungeCowboy73’s recreation of Voyager ’s main ship looks like the perfect place for a woman to begin her transition .

The Expanse ’s Rocinante

A remake of The Expanse's Rocinante flies through Starfield.

Reddit user Lexafer created a pretty snazzy lookin’ version of The Expanse ’s Rocinante as envisioned in the TV adaptation of the novels. And whether you identify as an Earther, Belter, or hail from elsewhere, at least you don’t have to steal this one from the Martian marines.

Knights of the Old Republic ’s Ebon Hawk

A remake of the Ebon Hawk from KOTOR sits in Starfield's ship builder.

While that KotOR remake languishes in uncertainty , why not consider building your own Ebon Hawk right here in Starfield ? Reddit user Scary_Xenomorph created a fitting tribute to the legendary sci-fi RPG with their version of the classic ship.

Star Trek ’s Klingon Bird of Prey

A remake of a Klingon Bird of Prey sits in Starfield's ship builder.

Qapla`! GrungeCowBoy73 also created a Bird of Prey from Star Trek , perfect for those pre-dog fight moments where you simply must exclaim that today is, in fact, a good day to die.

Battlestar Galactica ’s Viper Mark III

A remake of the Viper III from Battlestar Glactica sits in Starfield's ship creator.

Perfect for roleplaying a solo daredevil, DoomWZ’s Viper Mark III sure is a looker . Hopefully it won’t fly you into any strange, series-wrecking plot twists.

Cowboy Bebop ’s Swordfish II

YouTuber chatsubo_dude whipped together a solid interpretation of the Swordfish II , Spike Spiegel’s red spaceship from Cowboy Bebop . Following their guide, I put it together—though I’ve called mine “Swordfish I” since it’s not totally complete—and can confidently say this has become the best ship I own. It’s fast, light, has lots of health and shields, and can dish out some serious damage while holding quite a bit of cargo. It’s a dope ship that’s become even better with chatsubo_dude’s upgraded model . So, remember the first rule of combat: Shoot them before they shoot you. See you, Space Cowboy. — Levi Winslow

Star Wars ’ Millennium Falcon

A remake of the Millennium Falcon sits in Starfield's ship builder.

I’m not sure how many parsecs this thing is capable of, but Krunkstep77 took a few stabs at recreating the iconic Star Wars ship and the results are pretty sweet.

And that’s it for our roundup of sci-fi classic ship builds in Starfield . Have you seen any other cool ones, or better yet, built some of your own?

Star Trek Minutiae: Exploring the Details of Science Fiction

I have been a fan of science fiction for more than thirty years, since my parents introduced me to Star Wars some time in 1991. Since then, I’ve become obsessed to varying degrees with many shows including Star Trek , Babylon 5 , Battlestar Galactica , The Expanse , and many others. Generally, I don’t buy into most of the incessant crossover debates that frequently rage on certain sci-fi message boards. Rather than waste time proving that the Imperial Star Destroyer can blast Kirk’s Enterprise into molten slag, I prefer to enjoy each story based on the merits of its own setting and plot. Since the entire technological background is fictional anyway, the writers can simply make up any quasi-scientific principles that they wish for the sake of the plot.

Although I’m not that interested in the technological comparisons between series, I’ve occasionally wondered about how a certain starship would compare in size to those of another series. When Farscape ’s John Crichton first saw Moya , he exclaimed, “That’s big.... really big.” The question is, just how big is “big”? So I started to gather a list of the sizes of various science fiction ships. There are plenty of fans out there who have worked up all kinds of comparison charts on their own. But the one thing that very few of those charts has ever done is to include non-canon fan designs alongside the original canon starships. I decided to create one all-encompassing chart that would include many (if not quite all) of the Star Trek ships that are out there. The charts available below include those created by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau , Masao Okazaki at the Starfleet Museum , and Star Trek: Renaissance , the fan fiction series of which I was once a part.

I originally started these charts as a side project , to fulfill my own curiosity for how the ships stacked up. But they’ve become one of the most popular resources on Star Trek Minutiae, and I’ve even found copies of them floating around elsewhere on the web. So, here’s the original cross-sci-fi starship reference!

Federation starship classes

The following is a list of starship classes operated by the Federation .

Background information

Because of the strong connotations with the real world United States Navy, Star Trek: The Original Series Producers Gene Roddenberry and Robert H. Justman (a World War II navy veteran himself) had imbued Starfleet with ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 112, et al. ; These Are the Voyages: TOS Season One , 1st ed, pp. 28-29; see also in this respect: Aircraft carrier ), it came hardly as a surprise that the US Navy ship class naming convention was also followed for the vessels of Starfleet. This convention has it that a class is named after the first, or lead, vessel authorized by US Congress, which is not necessarily the one first laid down, launched, completed or commissioned (formally taken into service), and after which the British Royal Navy for example name their ship classes. While not canon , it can serve as a potential real-world rationale why there are Constitution -class vessels with lower registry numbers than the lead vessel USS Constitution . Nonetheless, in his influential " The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship " article, then fan and future Star Trek alumnus, Greg Jein , had postulated an alternative theory for the discrepancy, albeit equally non-canon.

Additionally, while it is highly unlikely that all alien races follow the same naming convention as Starfleet does – even on present-day real-world Earth, the US Navy convention is far from being universal – there is a real-world counterpart for this as well. The defense organization NATO uses a variant of the US/British class naming convention for ship types of their adversaries, particularly those of the former Soviet Union, who themselves classified their vessels according to project number, such as – where a Star Trek related example is concerned – their Project 705 / Alfa -class submarines .

  1. Star Trek Starships

Once parked the large ship could be begin to just extend pantries and use small tractor beams to star repairs while engineers swarm over the ship. I imagine the hull being smaller but not terrible so. Since hulls tend to be the more industrial areas of the ship, it could be a replication and manufacturer center.
