Don’t just take our word for it; read what others have said about their Outback Spirit tours below.

Our Outback Spirit Kimberley Delights tour was well organised to cover all the “must sees” of the Kimberley. Chappy, our driver/guide, was informative without (thankfully) talking non-stop. His years of living in the Kimberley provided us with many insights we may have missed otherwise.  Lird
We have travelled extensively both overseas and in Australia and were very impressed with our first tour with Outback Spirit. We travelled from Perth, up the West Coast to Broome via the Pilbara. Covering nearly 5000kms this was such an enjoyable way to see remote parts of Australia. We had a very compatible group and Scott, our tour leader, proved to be extremely knowledgeable as well as an excellent driver.  Barbara
We just completed the Outback Spirit tour over 3 weeks to the East and West Kimberleys. It was just fantastic and the travel by small Mercedes ‘bus’ with 17 others and also by seaplane, helicopter, and fast boats was brilliant and got us to spots and views that could never be seen on the ground. Merv

Cairns to Darwin - The Savannah Way.

This was a great way to see a large and remote part of Australia. We experienced the wet tropics to the dry savannah country and finished in the interesting city of Darwin. Rob and Maddie made our trip special with lots of interesting stop offs and lunch spots. Our accomodation was always clean and comfortable and the meals were fantastic. I can't wait to do another Outback Spirit trip.

Dear Cheryl Thank you for taking the time to post your review and for the positive 5-star rating. We are thrilled you enjoyed the trip and the company of your guides, Rob and Maddie. We will be sure to pass your comments onto them. We would also be delighted to have you aboard again in the future! Kind regards Outback Spirit Guest Relations

The trip to the Tip of Cape York was our third Outback Spirit Trip, and was made special by the cheerful professionalism of our Tour Directors, Paul and Faye. We saw much of the back story of this part of Australia that you would not know about if you rushed to the Tip. Accommodation was the best of what was available in the remote areas, but the food was better than expected. We shall return

Dear Colin We are incredibly grateful for your 5-star rating and delighted to hear you enjoyed the experience, and the company of your guides, Paul and Faye. It is always a pleasure to have like-minded travellers aboard our adventures and we do hope to see again! Yours sincerely Outback Spirit Guest Relations

This was a terrific safari with tour guides John & Kerrie from Cairns up to the tip of Cape York. We covered some really remote territory and learnt heaps about the whole peninsula. John's driving was excellent and Kerrie's level of organization made it all easy. There was a surprising amount of history at every turn, and the visit to the Torres Strait islands topped off the whole experience.

Dear twendeni Thank you for your review of our Cape York Wilderness Adventure and 5-star review. The remoteness of the location, challenging terrain, rich history and open-back 4WD vehicles at the Quinkan Galleries certainly give the feel of a safari adventure and we are thrilled you enjoyed these elements of the tour. Thank you again and it was our pleasure to have you on board. Kind regards Outback Spirit Guest Relations

Faye and Paul were exceptional tour guides for the tour of Cape York and my wife Kathy and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Although we were in some of the most remote areas of Australia the accommodation and food was first class. This was the third tour we have done with Outback Spirit and we have been very happy with all of them

Thank you for your 5-star review and positive feedback regarding your recent Cape York Wilderness Adventure. As always, it's a pleasure to have you join us and we are delighted you enjoyed this tour so much. Kind regards Outback Spirit Guest Relations

An outstanding trip with outstanding guides: Paul and Faye. The Outback Spirit itinerary is beautifully paced and includes some incredible places only available to Outback Spirit. Lotus Bird Lodge is one out of the nature box! So sad to reach the end of the trip but we will travel with them again: probably to Arnhem Land.

Dear Outback Spirit Guest Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with us on your Cape York Wilderness Adventure. We greatly appreciate your positive words and 5-star review. Our touring crew are indeed some of the best in the business. Highly professional, passionate and always willing to go the extra mile. We will be sure to pass on your feedback to Paul and Faye. Later this afternoon, arrive in Katherine for the first of two nights at Knotts Crossing Resort.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Katherine

This morning we enjoy Tom Curtain’s national award winning Katherine Outback Experience, a new addition to our tour.

Later on today we take a 2-hour boat cruise on the Katherine River Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. The NitNit Dreaming cruise is one of the most popular tours in the region and will take you to the end of the first gorge, where you will experience the beauty of the large boulders, rock pools and sands that make up the crossover to the second gorge.

We return to Knotts Crossing Resort for our second night.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Katherine - Lorella Springs

An early departure today as we head through Mataranka before continuing along the Roper Highway towards Roper Bar. Our travels take us along one of the most remote sections of the Savannah Way. Used extensively by drovers in the 1870’s, thousands of cattle have walked this route on their way from Queensland to the Northern Territory and the Kimberley. We pass through the dramatic scenery of the Limmen National Park and take a guided walk into the geological wonder of the Southern Lost City before arriving at the turn off to Lorella Springs. From here it’s a 30km drive to Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, a spectacular one millionacre pastoral lease that stretches right to the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

We arrive late afternoon and settle in for our three-night stay in this extraordinary location. Lorella Springs has recently built new accommodation, all with private ensuite bathrooms.  Meals (B.L.D)

Day 5 - Exploring Lorella Springs Station

Over the next two days we explore all the wonders of Lorella Springs Wilderness Park. Visit pristine thermal springs, take part in an exhilarating helicopter and ground tour of the southern ‘Lost City’. After landing near these ancient sandstone structures enjoy a ground tour with your guides who'll tell you about the local geology, vegetation and birdlife.

At the end of each day's adventures, join your station hosts at the bar for happy hour and mingle with other likeminded explorers journeying across the Gulf.  Meals (B,L,D)

Note: Weight restrictions apply for legal and safety reasons on all helicopter flights. All passengers must be weighed prior to boarding the aircraft.

Day 6 - Exploring Lorella Springs Station

As Day 5.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Lorella Springs - Borroloola - Pungalina - Pungalina Safari Camp

This morning we farewell the lovely team at Lorella Springs and make our way back out to the Savannah Way. From here we head to Borroloola, and after a visit to the Borroloola Museum, we continue our journey southeast towards Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s Pungalina-Seven Emu Wildlife Sanctuary. Together the two properties cover a combined area of around 305,000 hectares and include coastal monsoon rainforest, tall paper bark forests, palm-fringed wetlands, deep gorges and coastal flood plains. The sanctuary is home to over 40 species of mammals, 190 species of birds and 95 species of frogs and reptiles.

We arrive at the sanctuary late afternoon and check in to our new safari camp. Built by Outback Spirit in 2019, the camp features unique safari tents with ensuite bathrooms and covered decks, the perfect spot for a three-night stay to discover the area.  Meals (B,L,D)

Note: Seven Emu is owned by Mr Frank Shadforth with 110,000 hectares of the property leased to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy for conservation. Pungalina is wholly owned by AWC.

Day 8 - Exploring Pungalina-Seven Emu Wildlife Sanctuary

Over the next two days, we'll explore Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary and learn about what makes these two properties such important ecological habitats in northern Australia.

Activities include a scenic helicopter flight over the sanctuary, following the spectacular Calvert River all the way to the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Visit the old homestead or take a cruise on the Calvert River and experience some rarely seen but truly spectacular scenery.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Savannah Way – Hell's Gate - Hell's Gate Roadhouse

This morning we bid farewell to Pungalina-Seven Emu Wildlife Sanctuary and continue east along the Savannah Way, crossing over the NT/QLD border and onto Hell's Gate. Located on Cliffdale Station, Hell's Gate Roadhouse takes its name from a gap in the escarpment one kilometre south.

This afternoon we enjoy a tour of the station and tonight we stay in new and modern accommodation with ensuite bathrooms.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 11 - Hell's Gate – Leichhardt Falls - Camp 119 - Karumba

This morning we depart Hell's Gate and continue travelling along the Savannah Way. Located on the banks of the Norman River, Karumba came to importance in the 1930's when it became a stop-over point for flying boats on the run from London to Australia. Later this afternoon we check in to the End of the Road Motel for our 2 night stay.  Meals (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Karumba - Gulflander - Barramundi Centre

This morning we join one of the last great characters of rail travel - The Gulflander. This historic little train takes us on a journey from Normanton to Critters Camp.

From here we head back to Karumba and discover the amazing secrets of the mighty barramundi at The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre, the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf strain of this iconic fish! The brand new interactive and state-of-the-art Interpretive Centre provides the history, stories, lifecycle, and habits of these sought-after fish.

This evening we enjoy our second night at the End of the Road Motel.  Meals (B,L,D)

Note: Due to the closure of Adel’s Grove we will be spending the night at the End of the Road Motel.

Note: Gulflander travel may change subject to availability.

Day 13 - Karumba - Undara - Undara Experience

From here we head east to Mt. Surprise and then on to Undara Volcanic National Park, which protects the longest lava tube cave system in the world.

This afternoon we check in to Undara Experience for our overnight stay in unique accommodation, consisting of restored railway carriages. The lodge has recently been fully renovated and upgraded, with all rooms now featuring private ensuite bathrooms. Tonight, enjoy dinner in the outdoor style restaurant as the outback sun fades into a clear starlit night.  Meals. (B,L,D)

Day 14 - Undara Lava Tubes - Atherton Tablelands - Cairns

This morning a local Savannah Guide will take us on a tour through the lava tube cave system. Created when the Undara Volcano erupted over 190,000 years ago, the lava that poured out was enough to fill Sydney Harbour three times over. The lava flows lasted a long time, which allowed the outer edge to cool while the interior kept flowing, creating the tubes seen today.

Departing Undara, we join the Kennedy Highway and travel east to the beautiful Millaa Millaa Falls. Continuing through the scenic Atherton Tablelands, we check in to the Shangri-La located on the Marina, just minutes from the Esplanade.

Tonight, enjoy our final dinner together and celebrate our adventure through some of the most remote country in Australia.  Meals. (B,L,D)

Day 15 - Cairns

After breakfast enjoy a leisurely morning before being transferred according to the details specified below.

Bon Voyage!  (B)

This special morning of discovery includes a Safari Tour, introducing us to the longhorns before a camp oven damper and billie tea, served from the genuine cowboy chuck wagon and a Gallery of Horns museum tour. A little further on is our destination of Cloncurry, the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Savannah Way

Follow the footsteps of founders, the gulf savannah way – a timeless landscape.

The Gulf Savannah is a timeless landscape of natural treasures. A former frontier tackled by gold prospectors and cattle farmers, occupied by our country’s indigenous people. A place pocketed with natural wonders, including the world’s longest lava tubes and Australia’s youngest gorge. Our Gulf Savannah tours showcase the best of the Australian savannah. You’ll enjoy true Australian hospitality and sample the various styles of cuisine, as rich and colourful as the fascinating savannah outback landscapes and lifestyles you will encounter. Oz Tours Safaris has two gulf savannah tours. A 9-day overland Gulf Savannah 4WD accommodated tour and a 16-day all overland Savannah Way Darwin to Cairns 4WD camping safari.

Get in Touch

If you’re planning a Gulf Savannah tour, get in touch with us today. We’ve been operating tours across the Savannah Way for over 30 years. We deliver exceptional savannah experiences, covering the best bits of country and culture.

About the Gulf Savannah – Savannah Way

The Gulf Savannah is an area where time almost stands still. The landscape is as vast as it is empty. The quietness pervades and is almost deafening, broken only by the squawk of a native bird or a wandering beast. Each remote town has its own unique savannah outback style, coupled with a friendliness second to none.

There’s two iconic savannah rail journeys, which are as unique and special as the area itself. These fascinating modes of transport criss-cross the Gulf Savannah outback, allowing you to be a part of a long-gone history. A journey on the Gulflander is a tour back in time, to an era when a padded seat was a luxury and roads were bullock tracks. To a time where gold was the currency and home was a canvas and sapling humpy. And a generation where children were born in the dust and education was the school of hard knocks.

The Savannahlander is a train journey which returns you back to Cairns. It is one of the great savannah rail experiences of the world, as it rattles its way from the outback region back to the coast via the scenic Kuranda Range. It includes stops at Barron Falls and Stoney Creek and passes through World Heritage listed rainforests to Cairns.

These days tourism is playing an ever-increasing economic role in the Australian savannah, with many pastoralists opening their cattle properties to tourists. So, we invite you to come to the Gulf Savannah to capture the emotion and romance, tragedies and triumphs of Australia’s amazing savannah outback.

A holiday to the Gulf Savannah Australia offers adventure, beauty and a lesson in history giving the visitor a multitude of savannah experiences.

gulf savannah tours

Where is the Gulf Savannah?

The Gulf Savannah region extends from the Great Dividing Range in the east, to the Northern Territory in the west encompassing an area of some 186,000 square kilometres. It was once known as the ‘Outback By The Sea’, with its miles of untouched beaches, lush bushland, remote cattle stations, historic mining towns and breathtaking National Parks.

The Gulf Savannah is a part of the larger Savannah Way, which is the area and journey between Cairns on Queensland’s eastern coastline and Broome, on the Western Australian coast. It includes some amazing destinations and journeys, including the savannah way Cairns to Darwin trip.

As you travel through the vast and stark undeveloped land mass, its spectacular countryside and interesting history, you will be enveloped by the sense of magnificent history and hardship endured by the early settlers and Gold prospectors.

Gulf Savannah Accommodated Tours

Cobbold Gorge, Australia’s youngest gorge, which occupies an area of about 80 square km and was created by a process that began 1700 million years ago. A diverse range of vegetation grows in the gorge, forming a habitat for abundant bird and wildlife. It is also home to fish such as black bream, archerfish, long tom and perch, and freshwater crocodiles. A sunset cruise at Karumba, visit to Riversleigh Fossil Field, Chillagoe Limestone Caves and two savannah rail journeys.

Gulf Savannah Way Tour Testimonials

“ 16 days from Darwin really was an experience we shall not forget (at 80 years on) Chris and John must be the best shots ever and the cooking _ wonderful. Weather was rather over hot for means we would have preferred an earlier date, also the camping got a bit wearing, not that we minded being out in atent a all. Perhaps we shall go motels to cape York _ back cable style sounds really good. If you haven't done an OzT our then you MUST. ”

Mike Buckley

“ We have done 4 trips with Oz Tours since 2009 and highly recommend this company for those on a budget who want to see remote parts of Australia in the company of like-minded travellers. 3 of the trips (Kimberley, Townsville to Adelaide and Central Australia Desert Safari) were hosted by 2 of the "gems" of Australian outback travel, John and Chris. They are a very professional couple who really enhance every trip with their insights about geography and history of the areas in which we are travelling. The 4th trip to Cape York (all overland) was also a wonderful experience as we traversed the Peninsula to see many sights that other tours may miss. We are presently planning our 5th trip with Oz. ”

Today we enjoy a leisurely day exploring the Kalbarri National Park. First up is a visit to the new $20 million Kalbarri Skywalk, a breath-taking project featuring twin skywalks which float more than 100 metres above the Murchison River Gorge. Whilst in the National Park we’ll also visit Hawkes Head and Z-Bend to take in the vibrant displays of wildflowers, renowned as being some of the best during the wildflower season. This afternoon we return to the township for our second and final night in Kalbarri.  (B,L,D)

This morning we continue our journey north, arriving in Denham for lunch before heading to Monkey Mia on Shark Bay. It features one of the largest and most diverse seagrass beds in the world and is home to 10% of the world’s dugong population. There’s a myriad of other marine life including dolphins, whales, manta rays, turtles and sharks. The best way to experience Shark Bay is on a cruise, so this afternoon we’ll board a modern catamaran and head off to spot the bay’s rich marine life. Upon getting back to shore we head to the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort and check in for our overnight stay.  (B,L,D)

This morning we visit the Shark Bay Discovery Centre, which celebrates the regions rich biodiversity and the area’s World Heritage listing. We then head south and enjoy a visit to the Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve, one of only a few places in the world with marine stromatolites, or ‘living fossils’. This afternoon we continue south to Geraldton, where we’ll overnight at the Ocean Centre Hotel on the beachfront. (B, L, D)

After breakfast we visit the magnificent HMAS Sydney II memorial, before returning to Perth along the “Wildflower Way”. We also travel via Australia’s only monastic town, New Norcia. Here we take a tour though this interesting village which was, once upon a time, locked up behind closed doors. We arrive back at the Crown Promenade late this afternoon. Tonight enjoy a sumptuous farewell dinner at the hotel.  (B, L, D)

This morning we experience a gold pouring at the historical Perth Mint before the tour concludes. You will then be transferred to the airport or your accommodation if staying on in Perth. Bon Voyage!  (B)
