Review: Bangkok River Dinner Cruise on the Manohra Boat

In Bangkok there are numerous hotels and private operators who run dinner cruises along the Chao Phraya River. I recently took my family on the Manohra dinner cruise which only holds a maximum of 40 guests so the atmosphere is intimate and sedate.

The Manohra boat is a 50-year-old converted teak rice barge which has been completely refurbished for dining, but has still managed to retain its original charm and character. All diners are seated on the upper deck which provides for a pleasant breeze and excellent views of Bangkok at night. The kitchen/galley is located on the lower deck. There is plenty of room on the upper deck and with a maximum of 40 diners, the tables and chairs aren’t crowded together so it makes for a very pleasant and intimate dining experience.

The Manohra dinner cruise departs daily at 19.30 from the pier at the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Hotel (formerly Bangkok Marriott & Spa). Guests can join the boat at the Anantara or be picked up at the Taksin (Sathorn) Central Pier at 19.45. We were staying at the Bossotel Hotel and walked to the Taksin/Sathorn pier to catch the complimentary shuttle boat service which runs to the Anantara (departures every 15 minutes). This meant we joined the cruise at the starting point and so were able to select where we wanted to sit on the boat. We were also given buttonholes and had souvenir photos taken at the Anantara pier with a lady in traditional Thai costume.

The cruise runs north along the Chao Phraya River as far as Rama VIII Bridge before turning around and heading back to the hotel (stopping at Taksin/Sathorn pier on request). The Manohra arrives back at the Anantara at approximately 22.00.

The boat passes a number of interesting buildings and landmarks and these are pointed out to you by the unobtrusive on-board commentary. Guests are also given a printed route guide and map which details what to look out for including, Wat Arun , the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo , the Royal Barges, Wat Pho and Santa Cruz Church. Many of these sights are beautifully illuminated at night and provide a lovely backdrop to the dining experience.

Guests can choose from two different set menus; gold or silver. We opted for the silver menu which consisted of the following courses:

• Spring rolls
• Tom yam kung (clear prawn soup)
• Beef massaman curry
• Tiger prawns and sweet chilli sauce
• Sticky rice and mango

Included in the price were two types of rice (red and white) and a choice of tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Other drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) are charged separately.

The food on the silver menu was good and although each dish wasn’t particularly big, my family felt that the portions provided were more than adequate for the average diner. The tom yam kung and the som tam lacked the spice and kick you would normally anticipate , but were still enjoyable.

The gold menu is currently priced at 1,990 Baht per person (995 for children) with the silver menu priced at 1,250 Baht (625 for children). This does not include service charge and tax which is approximately 17% in total and is added on to the bill at the end of your meal.

I booked directly with the cruise operator via their website at manohracruises.com . I emailed just three days before the required cruise date and received a confirmation email back almost immediately. Payment can be made on the boat at the end of the cruise. The booking process was very smooth and I liked the fact that we didn’t have to pay in advance.

My family really enjoyed the Manohra dinner river cruise and we have no hesitation in recommending it for visitors to Bangkok. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives, especially if you want to go on a ‘party boat. However, for a relaxing and refined evening the Manohra dinner cruise is a good choice.

Manohra is one of the most luxurious dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya river . Enjoy a traditional Thai dinner while the boat gently floats by some of Bangkok’s most beautiful sites.

Restored antique wooden rice barge

The Manohra dinner cruise boat is an antique teak wood rice barge. In previous centuries many were used on the Chao Phraya river to transport rice from the rural areas to the capitol Bangkok.

The beautifully restored classic barge is much smaller than the modern cruise ships, giving the cruise a more intimate feel.

Luxury cruise

The Manohra cruise is operated by the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, one of Bangkok’s luxurious hotels.

As the number of tables on the barge is small, service is more personal than on the large cruise ships. There is no queuing for buffet, the food is served to the table. Floating down the River of Kings, one of the crew members points out some of the most famous landmarks on the river banks.

Both adults and children will enjoy an evening of fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere on the River of Kings.

Tranquility of the river

The barge is quite small and open on all sides allowing diners to enjoy the cool evening river breeze. No loud music is played aboard, so diners can enjoy the tranquility of the river. The Manohra dinner cruise provides for a relaxing evening on the river, where the pace is much slower than in the city.

Traditional Thai cuisine

Unlike most dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya river, there is no buffet. The nicely presented food is brought to your table. With a good variety of Thai food and seafood , there is plenty to cater to everyone’s taste. Halal food is available.

Diners have a choice of Thai cuisine menu or vegetarian menu. Both are a set menu with regional specialties and traditional Thai favorites.

Thai cuisine set menu

Starter: The traditional Thai starter is a snack originating from North Thailand: Savory betel leaves wrapped with peanuts, coconut, shrimp, lime, chili and coconut sauce. Appetizers: Tuna salad with several spices, Thai deep fried prawn cake with sweet tom yam sauce, fresh spring rolls with sweet tamarind sauce. Soup: Tom Yum Goong , spicy and sour soup with prawns. Main course: Massaman curry with beef, crispy roasted duck, stir fried tiger prawn with chili in yellow curry, wok fried vegetables, white and brown rice. Desserts: Mango sticky rice , red water chestnut rubies in coconut milk, Thai tea.

Vegetarian set menu

Starter: The traditional Thai starter is a snack originating from North Thailand: Savory betel leaves wrapped with spices and fresh herbs and sweet tamarind sauce. Appetizers: Fruit salad, deep fried jasmine rice cake with sweet chili sauce, grilled marinated tofu with coconut milk, soy sauce and turmeric topped with peanut sauce. Soup: Spicy soup with mushrooms and several vegetables. Main course: Vegetarian green curry, stir fried long eggplant with red jalapeño, soy bean and sweet basil leaf, sauté vegetarian bean curd with cashew nuts, white and brown rice. Desserts: Mango sticky rice , Thai Royal dessert and look chub, a sweet bite sized and colorful snack shaped like several kinds of fruits and vegetables, Thai tea.

Route & landmarks

The Manohra cruise barge departs from the Anantara Riverside Resort. Heading North, the barge sails upstream the Chao Phraya river over a distance of nearly 15 kilometers and then turns around at Rama VIII bridge .

Modern and historical sites Along the way diners will see both modern and historical sites, some of them beautifully illuminated at night. Manohra staff point out some of the most famous landmarks while the barge floats by.

Right after departure on the other side of the river is Asiatique the Riverfront , a shopping, dining and entertainment complex with a large illuminated Ferris wheel.

Luxury hotels, churches & temples The barge then floats by modern riverside luxury hotels as the Shangri-La, the Mandarin Oriental and the Millennium Hilton as well as several churches like Holy Rosary Church and Santa Cruz Church and Buddhist temples as Wat Rakang, Wat Kalayanamitr and Wat Prayurawongsawas.

Grand Palace and Wat Arun Highlight is the historical area Rattanakosin with Bangkok’s most famous sites, the Grand Palace and the Wat Arun , beautifully illuminated after dark.

Departure pier & time

The Manohra dinner cruise departs from the pier of the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. The hotel is located at 257/1-3 Charoen Nakhon Road in Thonburi. The cruise departs daily at 19:30, check in is at 19:15.

Getting to the pier

To get to the hotel pier you can use the free Anantara shuttle hotel boat from Sathorn pier. The shuttle boat leaves every 20 minutes, the trip takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The last shuttle boat from Anantara Pier back to Sathorn pier is at 23:40. You can get to Sathorn pier by BTS Sky Train , get off the train at Saphan Taksin station.

Alternatively, take a metered taxi to the Anantara Riverside Resort. If you’re close to the hotel, a tuk tuk is another option.
