Media Review:

The Independent

The medium and the message

by Ben Thompson

IT IS A lot easier to be cynical about U2’s Zooropa spectacular if you haven’t actually seen it. The bitter truth is that the days when hating this group was the easy way to prove yourself a person of good taste are probably now behind us. Of course, the new-look ”ironic” U2 is even more irritating than the old-look sincere one, but it would be churlish to criticise them for being pompous when they are so good at it.

Wembley Stadium is not an easy venue on which to stamp your authority, but the ”Zoo TV” installation does just that. The floodlights blare, adding greatly to the sense of occasion, but when U2 come on, to the jaw-juddering bass of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, they go off. The flashing screens and bewildering slogans are much the same as when ”Zoo TV” made its debut last year indoors, but the brew has been spiced up with some deadly toxins.

The opening video imagery is borrowed from Leni Riefenstahl’s Nazi propaganda films and, in conjunction with Bono’s ugly half-goosestep on to the stage, promotes a distinct feeling of unease. The idea of using a spectacle of which Albert Speer would have been proud to hammer home the dangers of Fascism is inherently problematic. And the crowd’s adherence to every diktat from the stage - when Bono breaks into a ridiculous high-speed handclap, they ape him as one - is not reassuring in this context.

The singer slithers about the stage like a little leathery penis. The sexual aspect of all the power on display is brought explicitly into focus when a female fan plucked from the crowd to help Bono with his dancing begins to writhe atop him in a most unseemly fashion. The show’s new musical content is not as potent. While the songs from Achtung Babho tund sleek and complete, most of the Zooropa material is drab. U2 have so far shown impressive skill in making the best use of limited creative resources, but it’s hard to know where they might go next.

Whichever way they choose to turn, the busking segment will remain a reliable showstopper. In the middle of ”Satellite of Love”, Lou Reed appears on the screen singing along, courtesy of his very own satellite of love link-up. Bono is not yet finished with his video screens. His ”Good evening, Sarajevo” has a grisly Eurovision echo, but the sudden switch from deafening rock to beleaguered Bosnians is genuinely shocking.

The appropriateness of this switch back to old-fashioned campaigning amid all the post- modern flash has been widely questioned, but the gesture is more effective than the rock- messiah postures of yesteryear just because it is so unsettling. Ironically, it’s the unreconstructed U2 who provide the most dramatic musical moments of the night, via the epic bluster of ”I Will Follow” and a resplendent ”Where the Streets Have No Name”, delivered through a great swathe of white light which makes the crowd feel like extras in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

U2 return for their encores with Bono in his instantly passe ”Macphisto” garb of white face, red devil-horns and Archie Rice whine. At this stage the night before, he conjured up Salman Rushdie on the phone and then in person. Tonight he rings the Princess of Wales, but she’s not in. The show ends with an uncharacteristically delicate version of ”I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”, nursed almost back to health after the mauling recently inflicted on it by UB40. Bono’s voice fades, very noticeably, into Elvis’s. Surely, it can’t be; not the surprise guest to end all surprise guests … ? No, that’s right, it can’t.

U2 Concerts in Wembley Stadium (I)

U2 has performed 9 times in Wembley Stadium (I). Those performances included   unique songs and an overall total of 176 songs.

Wembley Stadium (I) is located in London ,   England

Wembley Stadium opened on April 28th, 1923 and was the prime major event venue in Great Britain. It was built by Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and was meant to be demolished after the exhibition, but it was saved by Sir James Stevenson and went on to host many more historical events before finally being demolished in the early 2000's to make way for a new Wembley Stadium. Wembley Stadium was the primary home stadium of England national football team from 1951 until it's closure. In addition to rival matches against Scotland, Wembley hosted several notable England matches including their only World Cup Final victory in 1966. As a music venue, Wembley hosted the many of the biggest acts in the world in their prime including Queen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd, the Spice Girls, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and David Bowie. Oasis were the last British band to headline Wembley Stadium with two shows in the summer of 2000. Of course, the biggest musical event in the history of Wembley Stadium was Live Aid on July 13th, 1985. A benefit concert to help relief famine in Ethiopia, Live Aid featured the top acts in music including Paul McCartney, the Who, David Bowie, Sting, Phil Collins, etc.  One of U2's breaktrhough performances was at Live Aid. They later headlined Wembley on the Joshua Tree, ZooTV / Zoorpopa, and PopMart tours.

LONDON (AP) — Taylor Swift fans enjoy parsing the singer-songwriter’s lyrics for references to her romantic life and insights into her state of her mind.

But the pop superstar’s fans in the U.K. didn’t have to listen closely to her latest album , “The Tortured Poets Department,” to get the sense that Swift had soured on the country’s capital city after long making it a regular hangout and then her second home. The record’s fifth track is titled “So Long, London.”

As Swift brings her blockbuster Eras Tour to London’s Wembley Stadium, some Swifties therefore are wondering if they are witnessing the beginning of an extended goodbye. She is performing three nights starting Friday, and is scheduled to return to Wembley for six nights in August to close the tour’s European leg .

London is the only city on the tour where Swift is stopping twice. Some worry the arrangement may represent a swan song of sorts, while others think it just reflects a new era in Swift’s bond with the Big Smoke. Whether “So Long, London” turns out to be a final chapter or a bookend to her valentine to the city, the song “London Boy,” Eras is arriving as an emotional milestone.

“Her relationship now kind of assumes London won’t be somewhere she will be. It’s not like there is an American football player living here,” said Maggie Fekete, 22, a Canadian graduate student who credits the London references in Swift’s music with orienting her when she moved to the city three years ago. “I think there will be a lot less London in her music, which is sad.”

For those who haven’t been paying attention, Swift had a series of romances with famous British citizens, starting with Harry Styles in 2012 and ending last year, when she started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce . The speculation surrounding “So Long, London” and a mournful companion song that mentions a London pub , “The Black Dog,” stems from the 2023 breakup of Swift and English actor Joe Alwyn, who were together for over six years.

Alwyn is assumed to have inspired “London Boy,” a song from her 2019 album “Lover.” A special-edition “Lover” CD included what appeared to be a January 2017 diary entry in which Swift talked about being “essentially based in London” but trying to lay low. British tabloids later reported that Swift spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic sheltering with Alwyn in north London.

The Sun newspaper reported in December that the multiple Grammy-winner had bought a large property in the area and was remodeling it to be her base in Europe. After Swift released “The Tortured Poets Department” last month, however, a writer for the British edition of ELLE magazine observed that Londoners had an opening “for an all-American A-lister who can slot into her place in our collective consciousness.”

“We had Swift before we lost her to her record-breaking, box office-breaking Eras Tour and now, it would appear that her vacant position has been filled by Zendaya ,” writer Naomi May playfully posited before listing the various locations the American actor had been spotted with her longtime boyfriend, British actor Tom Holland.

Either way, the capital is putting on quite a show of its own to make sure Swift and her fans feel appreciated. Guides are offering walking, bus and taxi tours that retrace her footsteps, including a kebab shop whose owner says his establishment is supplying sandwiches for the singer and her crew on Friday.

Before the end of August, Swifties can partake in a full diet of Swift-themed brunches and dance parties, or ride the London Eye Ferris wheel accompanied by a string quarter playing her music. Souvenir stalls in Camden Market, one of the places mentioned in “London Boy,” stocked up on Swift-specific caps, T-shirts, bags and stickers in preparation.

“We’re very proud that London is hosting more shows than any other city on Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, a real testament to her love for London,” Laura Citron, CEO of tourism agency London & Partners, said.

Fans started lining up outside Wembley on Thursday in hopes of being among the first ticket-holders to claim spots in standing sections close to the stage. A pop-up tour merchandise store opened in a parking lot by the stadium that morning.

Zachary Hourihane, who co-hosts a Swift podcast called “Evolution of a Snake” and posts YouTube and TikTok videos under the name Swiftologist, said it’s too soon to know whether the singer will retain her honorary citizenship or part ways with London. As her fans know all too well, only time will tell with Taylor.

Hourihane notes that Swift started spending more time in London after a difficult year in which she went from winning album of the year at the 2016 Grammy Awards for “1989” to seeing her popularity plummet amid a public feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. From his study of her life in England, he thinks the happy memories she created there come mixed with “a sense of isolation.”

“There is a lot of nostalgia that might have turned into regret,” Hourihane said. “She felt like she was trapped there for a while.”

Fast forward several boyfriends, 10 albums (including the Taylor’s Version re-records ) and the Eras Tour juggernaut, and it’s not surprising her life is up for reappraisal. Hourihane suspects Swift is “not quite ready to give up on London” for both practical and artistic reasons.

“Taylor is someone who retraces her steps a lot. Things are never really over with her. She likes to revisit things that have finished,” he said. “Let’s be realistic about it. Her relationship, even if it is, ‘so long, goodbye,’ she has good reason to be in London and good money to make there.”

Mette says Taylor Swift's 'prowess is unreal' ahead of her opening London Eras Tour slot

u2 tour wembley

When Mette takes the Wembley Stadium stage to open the first of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour of five shows, it won’t be her debut at one of the most famous venues in the world. But it will be the first time she’s there with a microphone in hand.

Starting in 2014, Mette toured the world with Pharrell Williams as one of The Baes, his renowned dance troupe. Summer Sonic in Japan, Glastonbury in England and other massive festivals around the globe – Mette has had plenty of opportunities to perform in front of tens of thousands.

But when she becomes part of the Eras Tour lineage on June 21, it will be different.

“I’m going to be so present on that stage,” she says. “Twenty-five minutes is going to go by fast .”

Mette’s debut EP, “METTENARRATIVE,” arrived last fall and launched the world-beat-pop single, “Mama’s Eyes,” which earned her a prestigious Ivor Novello award nomination this year. Her single, “Bet,” is a slice of irresistible dance-pop with a funk groove, and she’s readying the release of three more songs, “Muscle,” “Coming of Age” and “Small World.”

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

But despite her quickly thriving musical pivot, she and Swift initially crossed paths when both were exploring a film opportunity – the critically mauled 2019 film version of “Cats .”

So who is Mette and why did Swift choose her for a coveted opening slot?

Mette admires Taylor Swift's ‘creative prowess’

Mette, 33, says the combination of performing at a show with not only the biggest artist in the world, but fellow opening act Paramore is “one of the many incredible circles of life surrounding me right now.”

She recalls attending the Vans Warped Tour in the mid-'00s and seeing Paramore perform and also remembers the year she turned 22 while at a dance camp in Duluth, Minnesota. Swift’s anthem in tribute to her age at the time was ubiquitous on radio and Mette happily bounced on her bed, singing along.

Though she hasn’t seen the Eras Tour live yet – Mette plans to head into the audience as soon as she can after performing – she’s watched key moments online , with a keen eye toward Swift’s dancers as well as the woman in the spotlight.

“Her work ethic, I admire it so much,” Mette says of Swift. “Her creative prowess is unreal. People talk about the fandemonium, but it’s a true passion connecting people around the world and she’s delivering it in a 3 ½-hour show. She’s an athlete.”

Mette touts the inspiration of Beyoncé and Shakira

Born Mette Towley, she spent her childhood in the small town of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Baltimore, where she attended dance camp and learned about musical theater in movies such as “Singin’ in the Rain.” It’s also where Mette, whose Scandinavian name references her father’s roots, found her “tribe in the performance world.”

Growing up mixed race in a provincial area of the Midwest (her recent song “Darling Drive” harkens to a place where she felt protected by her white father and Black mother but also dealt with “challenging and sometimes unfair” experiences) and then finding comfort in the diversity of artsier Baltimore, Mette refers to her background as “stark intersections.”

She listened to pop and rock, appreciating the brilliance of Prince and also running home from school to watch “TRL” on MTV and be awed by the women owning the video world at the time – Shakira, Destiny’s Child, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani – and soaking in their auras.

Beyoncé and Shakira left impressions on her creative brain and remain idols – Mette can recollect Beyoncé’s “Ring the Alarm” VMAs performance with awed clarity.

“They rent space in my head,” she says with a laugh. “I’m always impressed by artists who continue to evolve and be unbridled by ideas when people say they’re too old or they had a child or whatever. It’s incredible to watch artists I grew up loving continue to strive for excellence.”

‘Barbie’ movie opened Mette’s mind ‘to how fun music can be’

Mette still has a foot in film and appears briefly in the Greta Gerwig blockbuster "Barbie" as Video Girl Barbie, sporting a tuft of long black curls and a hot pink zip-up jacket with zebra-stripe inlays.

She says her current hairstyle is inspired by her celluloid counterpart, but she also gleaned deeper lessons from her monthlong-plus time on set.

“Those costumes were so fun and I accessed a level of camp that informed my video for ‘Van Gogh,’ ” she says. “Working on that set opened my mind to how fun music can be. I want to be taken seriously, yes, but the fun and the costumes and the hair and the makeup … ‘Barbie’ was just really inspiring for the look I’ve been rocking.”

Mette also recalls quietly watching Gerwig at work and marveling at how the director never raised her voice to make a point.

“The way she would reference a scene in a movie, like ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ she’d draw you in with what was in her brain and bring that out of you. She’s so talented, so smart, such a badass,” Mette says. “I’m so grateful for the people I’ve met in my journey through film and dance and music who are so inspiring, but they can be so humble.”

Mette’s concert journey continues through the summer

The summer of Mette will continue as she hits the festival circuit in Europe, as well as Lollapalooza in Chicago in August.

Her second EP – home to the aforementioned singles – will be out in a few months and she’s invigorated by the “launching pad” that her moment in the Swift-iverse might bring.

“It’s really incredible to me that all of these seeds I planted are really starting to grow,” Mette says. “There are so many points in my life that are electrifying me and making me believe in my journey.”

Taylor Swift fans 'scammed over Wembley accommodation' ahead of Eras tour in London

Taylor Swift fans seeking accommodation in Wembley for the Eras tour have been targeted by suspected scammers on Airbnb , according to a report.

Profiles advertising properties surrounding the stadium were discovered by the BBC to have been using what appeared to be artificial intelligence (AI) images.

In some cases, multiple people appeared to be advertising the same room.

Fans of Swift have already descended on Wembley where she is to kick off the London leg of her tour on Friday, and will play a total of eight nights at Wembley Stadium.

She will play three shows from June 21 and a further five in August.

With nearly 700,000 people attending her London performances this summer, competition for accommodation in the capital has been fierce.

An Airbnb spokesperson said: “We have zero tolerance for fake listings and these properties have been removed.”

Some listings on the holiday rental website featured stock images used by estate agents to sell homes which have not yet been built, the BBC reported.

Airbnb has assured that “we do not share guest payment with a host until 24 hours after check in”.

Detective Superintendent Gary Miles, Head of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau at the City of London Police, said: “If there is an accommodation advert near a venue of an in-demand concert, always research the property you intend to book and verify the address exists through web searches and online maps.

“Avoid adverts using the same pictures as others, these listings could be fake and made up by fraudsters.

“When someone is offering tickets to a popular show or sold-out concert online, with prices too good to be true, it could be a criminal trying to get you to part ways with your cash. Only buy tickets from official resale sites or reputable ticket office sites.

“Always exercise caution when booking for popular events and avoid paying by bank transfer, or you might not be able to recover your money, if it turns out your ticket is fraudulent.”

It follows reports of an increase in ticket fraud for Swift’s concerts.

On Wednesday, one user on X, formerly Twitter, wrote: “Absolutely devastated - had Taylor Swift tickets for Wembley only to find out we had been scammed completely and lost our money and tickets. Four heartbroken girls this week.”

Across the capital, numerous events and celebrations have been organised to mark the music tour, including public artwork such as the ‘Swiftie steps’ in Wembley.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "As Taylor prepares for Friday’s opening performance, we are proud to give her and her fans a big London welcome, with celebrations across the capital including a special Tube map, trail and murals in her honour.

“I encourage Swifties to not only enjoy the fantastic shows, but also make the most of everything London has to offer, and hope that even more people are encouraged to enjoy the incredible live music available in our city.”
