How to Visit the Jameson Distillery in Dublin

jameson distillery dublin visit

The Jameson Distillery in Dublin was founded on Bow St. in the Smithfield neighborhood more than 200 years ago. The whiskey distillery filled its first order in 1780 and has since become one of the world's favorite Irish tipples. If you want to get a taste of Irish whiskey directly from the source, here is the complete guide to how to visit the Jameson Distillery in Dublin — including how to get tickets, book a premium tasting experience, and what to do nearby once you have toured the copper stills.

History of Jameson Whiskey in Ireland

Jameson may be Ireland’s most famous whiskey, but John Jameson, the founder of the distillery, was not born on the Emerald Isle. Jameson was actually Scottish rather than Irish, but he moved to Dublin when he sensed that Ireland was lacking a good quality whiskey and thought he could be the man to take advantage of the opportunity.

In 1805, John Jameson II, the founder’s son, took over control of the operations. Two more John Jamesons followed (the grandson and great-grandson of the founder), meaning that the family ran the booming business until 1905.

By 1887, the Bow St. distillery was producing a million gallons of spirits a year. It took 300 workers spread out over five acres to keep up with demand for the drink. Naturally, each worker was entitled to a drink of whiskey at the end of every shift.

Despite this early and long success, Jameson nearly went out of business in the early 1900s. First came World War I when barley (a key ingredient) was strictly rationed. Next, the Irish Revolution cut off ties with the British market. American prohibition and World War II quickly followed, further limiting sales of the Irish spirit.

In the 1960s, Jameson decided to rebrand in an effort to boost sales. Until then, the whiskey had always been sold by the barrel but the company began to bottle the spirit in the distinctive green glass to better promote the Jameson name at the bar, as well as to have more control over the quality of the product. Shortly after, in 1971, the company moved its distillery to County Cork to be closer a water source and to the farms producing the barley that was so key to the drink.

Tour the Jameson Distillery in Dublin

Jameson is no longer produced in Dublin, having left the city behind for more space in the countryside, but it is still possible to tour the original distillery on Bow St. A visit to the Jameson Distillery in Dublin includes a 40-minute tasting tour lead by a Jameson Ambassador who explains the whiskey making process, the brand’s focus on ingredients and the key innovations that have made the drink such a beloved Irish tipple. The tour includes a comparative whiskey tasting where guests can sample Jameson side-by-side with bourbon and scotch. Finally, the experience ends with a free drink at JJ’s Bar, all included in the ticket price.

Whiskey Tastings in Dublin

A tour of the Jameson Distillery includes a small comparison tasting of whiskey, bourbon, and scotch, as well as a whiskey-based drink at JJ’s Bar at the end of the visit. However, it is also possible to book a more in-depth tasting experience.

The distillery offers an expert-led Whiskey Tasting of four premium spirits. The 40-minute whiskey tasting experience is held in John Jameson’s old office and available every day of the week. If you want to learn how to make drinks in addition to enjoying them, book the Whiskey Shaker’s Class. A bartender will instruct participants in how to mix three Jameson cocktails (a Whiskey Sour, an Old Fashioned, and a Whiskey Punch) - and there is no rule against sampling your own creations.

Finally, true whiskey lovers can join an hour and a half long Whiskey Blending Class. During the course, participants sample premium whiskeys and even blend their own whiskey to take home - the perfect Irish souvenir .

How to Get Tickets

Tickets to tour the Jameson Distillery are available through the online booking system and cost €22 for adults (discounted to €18 for students with ID). You can save by booking a morning tour.

What Else to Do Near the Jameson Distillery

After a visit to the Jameson Distillery, stay in the area to discover some of the other activities in the Smithfield area.

St. Michan’s church is just around the corner. The 900-year-old church is well preserved, but the real draw is the small crypt complete with mummies.

A little further down the road, against the banks of the River Liffey, is Four Courts — Ireland’s main criminal and civil court.

Cross the river to sample a pint at The Brazen Head — one of Dublin’s liveliest pubs .

Finally, continue the city tour with a visit to the medieval Christ Church Cathedral.

My husband really wanted to check this place out as he is a fan of Jameson Whiskey. The tour talks about the history of Jameson and where it's grown to today. They no longer distill out of Dublin, but it is where they started, hence why they still have the tour here. The tour concluded with three small tastings and a whiskey drink of your choice at the end of the experience. There was also a gift shop for you to purchase Jameson related products. If you're a fan of Jameson Whiskey, it's not a bad tour to check out, but personally I'd rather just do the tasting. Keep and eye out for promo codes. We found one at the hotel we were staying at and got 10% off ticket price.

I'm not a whiskey drinker but the espresso martini made with Jameson Cold Brew at the Bow Street distillery is worth buying a flight for alone. My best friend is a Jameson lover and we had to experience everything the Bow Street experience had to offer. We did a tour, our tour guide was great and gave us plenty of fun facts associated to the experience. He also encouraged plenty of questions and with a small group tour, we felt like we could ask and learn throughout the experience. (Please note the first 15 minutes is self guided and allows you to explore the space.) Both of us became obsessed with Jameson Crested. It's a whiskey that's available basically everywhere with the exception of the US and one of the oldest flavors of Jameson. It was incredible and we both ended up buying bottles of it to bring home. The extra add ons offered are also pretty fun (sampling whiskey out of the barrel - woah man, it'll grow hair on your chest ) and bottling your own whiskey is fun too. Pro tip: buy before you fly to Ireland there are bubble wrapper envelopes made for wine bottles that our bottles of whiskey fit in to travel home in within our checked baggage. No issues at all and we're both SO happy we packed them! Save them for your next trip!

I have a long story as to why I'm a fan of Jameson. First thing in my opinion is it's good whiskey. So needless to say when I decided to come to Dublin it was on my list as a must do/see. I've been to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and once you've seen how whiskey is made they are all very much the same. This tour is worth the time and money if you've done 10 tours. The facility is incredible, the people and guides are great. They were honest with us saying it was cheaper to buy at the DutyFree. There are 2 different blends that you can not buy in the US. Absolutely enjoyed the tour and the tastings. The history and vision is what amazes me. We bought tickets from a firm where the headline was "skip the lines" and I enjoyed that and because it was NYE the crowds were crazy. I'd come back to the gift shop on my next trip. cheers

Sooo cool, and busy, and lovely, and FUN. Jameson tour is a must do. Super informative but also not too long and dragged out. Nice sampling and complementary cocktail included as well. And that espresso tini!!!!! The best

While most think of Guinness when the idea of a Dublin visit is on site, Jameson's Bow Street tour and distillery is a welcome stop. Combining both history and spirits, the tour gives you an incredible multimedia experience on how the most recognized Irish whiskey got its start and continues to thrive. As expected, the tasting experience is wonderful. The tour guide was amazing. And the overall experience was very enjoyable. There is a bar and lounge on site but I'm not sure if they have food.

This place is hopping and a graining. Everyone is here to enjoy all the many experiences of Jameson. The interior bar is roomy and lots of seating in and outside. They have a gift shop also for shirts and etc. I tried the Trad which is an old fashion, and it was great. Also had a shot of Jameson orange which was good. Looks like the winner was the Irish coffee special everyone was walking around with. Parking was easy and it was a close walk to the front entrance. Happy I picked this out of all the other tours, it was fun..

Whether you're a history fan, whiskey fan, or just enjoy learning something new. The Jameson Distillery in Dublin is a great choice. We enjoyed a tour with whiskey tasting, cask draw sample, and even poured our own bottle from the cask. Only wish I had more time!

jameson distillery dublin visit

The Jameson Distillery is a must-visit for everyone ! It's a place where you can learn all about the history and process of making this famous drink. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable, making the experience both informative and enjoyable. Plus, at the end of the tour, you get to taste some delicious Jameson whiskey. The atmosphere is lively, and it's a great opportunity to understand and appreciate the craft behind this iconic spirit. You don't need to go on a tour to enjoy some Jameson cocktails but the tour is a bonus and for sure not boring. For sure coming back when I visit Ireland again.

What a fun tour! When in Dublin, you have to check out the Jameson distillery and purchase the tour. It was definitely worth getting to learn the history and sample versions of Jameson you can't easily get back home. The black barrel is lovely and I wish it was easily accessible in the states. The tour guide was charismatic and wonderful and with the purchase of the tour, you also get one free Jameson cocktail or shot. Whenever your poison of choice may be...

The history of the Jameson Distillery in Dublin

jameson distillery dublin

Photo in the Public Domain

As we mentioned earlier, this is a place with a fair bit of history! Though it no longer produces whiskey for Jameson (that’s reserved for the New Midleton Distillery in County Cork), the Bow St distillery is now a historic visitors centre with loads to discover and enjoy.

But how did it all start?

John Jameson himself was originally a lawyer from Alloa in Scotland before he founded his distillery on Bow St in 1780. The distillery was expanded in 1805 when his son, John Jameson II, joined him, and the business was renamed John Jameson & Son’s Bow Street Distillery.

Jameson’s son (and then grandson) did a fine job of expanding the business, and by 1866 the site had grown to upwards of five acres in size. Described by many as a ‘city within a city’, the distillery also housed saw mills, engineers, carpenters, painters and coppersmith shops.

The inevitable fall

Following this growth, however, came the inevitable fall. American Prohibition, Ireland’s trade war with Great Britain and the introduction of Scotch blended whiskey all contributed to Bow St’s struggles.

By the mid-1960s, Jameson felt they had no choice but to merge with previous rivals to create the Irish Distillers Group. Bow St finally closed in 1971, and operations were moved to the modern facility at New Midleton in Cork.

Hosted by a Jameson Brand Ambassador, you’ll get to try Jameson Original, Jameson Crested, Jameson Distillery Edition and Jameson Black Barrel Cask Strength. And the cool thing is, is that two of them are only available at the distillery.

A Delectable Taste of Tradition The distillery tour is a lovely immersion into the craft of whiskey-making, which has been passed down through centuries. You’ll follow the trail of malted barley and pure water, learning about the laborious process that turns raw components into liquid gold. The subtle hum of history surrounds you along the way, a calming reminder of the many hands and hearts that have nourished this great business.

A Brand Born of Dedication Jameson Whiskey is more than just a spirit; it’s a legacy built on the shoulders of hardworking artisans. Every amber drop reflects their unrelenting dedication to quality and heritage. The key to Jameson’s success is revealed at this distillery, where history meets innovation. The triple distillation process, the impact of Irish oak casks, and the master blender’s accuracy are all revealed, providing a deep appreciation for the precise artistry behind each bottle.

Raise a Glass to Ireland The genuine enchantment happens at the end of the trip, when you stand in the warmth of the tasting room. A tumbler of Jameson whiskey is carefully poured and urged to be savored slowly. Close your eyes, inhale the aroma, and let the flavor dance across your palate to realize that you’ve become a part of a legacy that dates back to the very heart of Ireland.

The Old Jameson Distillery is a living testimony to the history, art, and soul of Ireland’s most beloved libation. Join me now as we delve further into the traditions and flavors that make the Old Jameson Distillery such an important part of Irish history.

Whiskey, Whispers, and a Delicious Tradition

We’re drawn further into the heart of Ireland’s whiskey-making tradition as we continue our tour through the ancient corridors of the Old Jameson Distillery. Our journey now peels back the layers of Jameson Whiskey’s tradition, craft, and community.

Mastering the Art of Blending One of the remarkable facets of Jameson Whiskey is the art of blending. Here, in the midst of the distillery, we uncover the essence of what makes Jameson so distinct and delightful. The master blenders, like skilled conductors, orchestrate a harmony of flavors from various cask types. They deftly mix the bold and the delicate, creating a whiskey with layers of complexity, smoothness, and balance.

Triple Distillation: A Signature Move It’s impossible to talk about Jameson Whiskey without mentioning the triple distillation process, which is unique to Irish whiskey. You’ll notice how this unique approach produces a smoother, more refined spirit at the Old Jameson Distillery. Each pass through the copper pot still removes impurities and refines the character, resulting in the smooth whiskey for which Jameson is famous.

The Power of Oak and Time The effect of oak casks on whiskey is breathtaking. We discover the secrets of Irish oak casks as we progress deeper into the distillery. These strong barrels, which have previously held sherry, bourbon, or wine, lend distinct flavors and colors to the whiskey. The tour demonstrates how time and patience are crucial in Jameson’s development, letting the spirit to evolve and gain character.

A Community and Craftsmanship Bond The Old Jameson Distillery’s link to the local community is one of its most touching qualities. The distillery, which has been a mainstay in Smithfield for almost two centuries, continues to be a source of pride and employment. This sense of community develops a dedication to excellence, which pervades all aspects of the distillery.

A Toast to Legacy and Tradition The Old Jameson Distillery is more than just a location to make whiskey; it’s a haven where tradition, craftsmanship, and community come together. It is within these sacred walls that you will learn about the magic that goes into every bottle of Jameson Whiskey—the labor of love that has transcended centuries.

The Dance of Flavors: Savoring a Glass of Jameson

As we continue our tour of the Old Jameson Distillery, we’ll go beyond the casks, copper pot stills, and history. In this section, we’ll lay the groundwork for a fascinating sensory adventure—a voyage into the beautiful aromas that define Jameson Whiskey.

A Sweetness Symphony Every Jameson taste starts with Irish barley, a crop known for its sweetness. This fundamental component establishes Jameson’s distinct personality. Close your eyes and savor the perfume as you raise your glass. Rich, malty notes mingle with undertones of toffee and vanilla, evoking visions of Irish pastures drenched in golden sunlight.

Fruit and spice notes A subtle crescendo of flavors unfolds as the whiskey reaches your lips. The effect of wood casks is visible here. The spirit is infused with delicate notes of orchard fruits such as apple and pear, as well as hints of mild spice and nutty undertones. It’s a delectable dance of tastes that represents the artistry behind each bottle.

Harmony and balance Jameson’s exquisite balance is one of its great miracles. The combination of malted and unmalted barley, triple distillation, and the rigorous blending procedure result in a smooth and nuanced whiskey. The sweetness is well-balanced by a delicate peppery spice that lingers in the end, providing a pleasant warmth.

The Role of Water and Craftsmanship Water, a gift from nature, is essential to the development of Jameson. You’ll learn at the distillery how fresh water from the Dungourney River plays an important role in the whiskey-making process, guaranteeing a clean, consistent spirit. It’s a monument to the exquisite craftsmanship, with even the water supply carefully chosen.

The Magic of a Jameson Tasting A tour of the Old Jameson Distillery would be incomplete without a whiskey tasting. It’s time to celebrate the culmination of centuries of tradition and innovation. Whether you drink Jameson neat, on the rocks, or in a traditional Irish coffee, each sip contains the essence of Ireland’s whiskey heritage.

A Timeless Custom Jameson Whiskey is more than just a beverage; it’s a tale, a journey, and a link to the heart of Ireland. It’s a monument to the skill, devotion, and affection of those who have worked to mold it through the years. Every bottle contains the spirit of a nation as well as the essence of Ireland’s rich heritage.

A Global Icon with an Irish Heart: Jameson Whiskey

As we approach the conclusion of our journey through the Old Jameson Distillery, we turn our focus to the remarkable influence and global resonance of Jameson Whiskey. This is a testament to the enduring appeal of Ireland’s most beloved spirit.

Jameson’s global reach Jameson Whiskey has grown beyond its Irish roots to become a globally known brand. From Dublin to New York, Tokyo to Sydney, the name is well-known in bars and liquor cabinets. The famous green bottle has left its mark on the world, providing a taste of Ireland to the most remote corners of the globe.

A Combination of Tradition and Innovation What distinguishes Jameson is its ability to balance tradition with innovation. While Jameson’s heart is in centuries-old Irish whiskey-making traditions, the brand has adapted to modern tastes. As a result, this whiskey appeals to whiskey aficionados, casual sippers, and cocktail fans alike.

Jameson Distillery, Bow Street, Dublin

Jameson Distillery, Bow Street, Dublin

Jameson was born in Dublin in the year 1780, and for almost two hundred years, the world-famous whiskey was distilled from the distillery in Bow Street.

In 1971, when the distillery outgrew its location, it was moved to Midleton, Co. Cork.
