Paul McCarroll House Of Travel: Reviews

Fantastic experience: Great knowledge of everywhere and everything. Very helpful and friendly staff. Got a great deal for family holiday to Create when we thought we were out of luck. Amazing searching done for us. Will use again. Even let the dog into shop. Give them a go. You won’t be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: Great travel agency

Fantastic experience: First class service from all the team. They know their stuff!

Fantastic experience: Perfect holiday everytime

Fantastic experience: Fantastic service and prices. X

Fantastic experience: We had special requirements for our trip back to the USA. Our viola needed to be transported in the plane cabin, as it is too fragile for the hold, but its size is over the limits specified for musical instruments like the violin, which could be put in the overhead compartments. So it required a seat of its own, to be specified by the airline, not us. Not only did this mean calling the airlines, but it meant calling them several times in a special order as the tickets were bought. We were doing this at a time when it was extremely difficult to get through to the airlines, and hoped that Paul and his team could get the tickets for us. Paul did a wonderful job with this, including changing our tickets for the return flights. He and his team also were crucially helpful in getting our Covid test information into the VeriFly app, which turned out to be extremely useful at the airport. We had a very easy time of it, thanks to Paul and his team, and we heartily recommend them.

Fantastic experience: I only book with Paul McCarroll House of Travel now, usually by phone now as I moved from Glasgow but the shop experience is like no other travel agent, really nice welcoming and comfortable place to chat about adventures. They ask the right questions to suggest places I'd never thought of and they even take care of all that tedious online check ins and passport info etc. Very happy to recommend.

Fantastic experience: Great company to deal with and Paul was fantastic. He was really helpful and worked hard to get me the perfect holiday. Big thanks to Paul and the rest of the team.

Fantastic experience: Great service, great prices. Very helpful staff ready to answer any questions and help with with anything you could need help with.

Fantastic experience: What fantastic service. Paul and his girls understand what you require and deliver. Service is everything and they reach 100+%. Thank you.

Fantastic experience: Defo 5 star customer service. Done us a fantastic deal and a really nice guy to match

5 Best Day Trips from Glasgow

Fancy a brilliant day trip from Glasgow? This dynamic city is centrally located in Scotland, which means there are plenty of historic attractions, castles, lochs, outdoor activities and remarkable landscapes right on Glasgow's doorstep. Here are some ideas and inspiration for great days out from Glasgow, from exploring national parks to an adventure on the coast.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Stirlingshire

Time from Glasgow: 50-minute train, 45-minute drive

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is one of Scotland’s national parks and is the perfect place to unplug from city life and explore some of the country’s most iconic scenery.

Easily accessible by public transport from the centre of Glasgow, it’s amazing how quickly you can find yourself transported to woodland walks, rugged mountains and the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. The park has over 720 square miles to discover, with 21 Munros, 22 larger lochs and one of the UK’s largest National Nature Reserves – The Great Trossachs Forest. Take a cruise on the famous loch, kayak around some of the smaller islands dotted around the park or relax and unwind on the sandy beaches on the shorefront.

Largs Ayrshire

house of travel glasgow

Largs seafront and the Pencil Monument

Time from Glasgow: 1-hour train, 45-minute drive

If you’re looking for an easy day trip from Glasgow to breathe in the fresh sea air, then Largs is for you!

The town is a traditional seaside holiday escape on the west coast of Scotland, situated on the Firth of Clyde. Make sure you soak up all the classic beach holiday activities to enjoy, from strolling along the Victorian promenade to savouring an ice cream from Nardini’s - an iconic 1930s ice cream parlour with panoramic views. The town also has a rich history with strong Viking links, famous for a battle in 1263 when Alexander III defeated a Viking fleet of longboats. The Isle of Cumbrae is also only a short ferry trip from Largs and is well worth a visit.

Isle of Arran Ayrshire and Arran

house of travel glasgow

The pools at Glen Rosa with a view of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran

Time from Glasgow: 45-minute train to Ardrossan, followed by 55-minute ferry

The Isle of Arran is one of the most accessible islands off the west coast of Scotland. Just a short train or bus journey takes you to Ardrossan station, where you can catch a ferry to the island in under an hour.

Arran is often described as ‘Scotland in miniature’ with beautiful seascapes, lochs, hills, standing stones and castles to discover. For those looking for adventure, its twisting roads and hilly landscapes lend itself to some excellent cycling routes, or you could climb Goatfell – the highest point on the island. There’s even an Arran Snorkel Trail if you’re ready to dive in! If history and heritage is more your thing, make sure you visit Brodick Castle, Gardens and Country Park, which was once the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton and has some lovely walks and trails in the grounds. At the north end of the island you’ll find Lochranza Distillery, where you can take a tour and sample a wee dram before heading back through to Glasgow.

Stirling Central Scotland

house of travel glasgow

Stirling Old Bridge

Time from Glasgow: 30-minute train, 45-minute drive

Stirling is the historic heart of Scotland and an easy 30-minute train journey from Glasgow city centre. It’s the perfect day trip from Glasgow for history lovers and a great access point to explore the rolling hills and abundant fields of the surrounding countryside.

There are so many iconic spots to visit in Stirling, it’s hard to know where to begin! Wander through the atmospheric medieval streets of the city centre and head up to Stirling Castle, which sits perched atop volcanic rocks and overlooks the whole city. It has a rich history and was the royal residence for many of Scotland’s kings and queens, including Mary Queen of Scots. From Stirling you can also take the short bus trip to the Wallace Monument – a stunning tower dedicated to Scotland’s national hero, William Wallace. It offers spectacular views across Stirlingshire as well as over Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English in 1314.

New Lanark Lanarkshire

house of travel glasgow

New Lanark Visitor Centre

Lanarkshire spans a wide area around Glasgow and is full of beautiful landscapes to uncover, including the Falls of Clyde and the hills of the Southern Uplands.

Take the train to Lanark, an historic Royal Burgh with characterful streets, independent shops and green spaces to wander. A short drive or 30-minute walk takes you to New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site based in a former 18th century cotton spinning mill village, once owned by Robert Owen. Learn more about the people who worked here, and the rich textile heritage of the area. You can visit the Mill Cafe for a bite to eat, or the Mill Shop to take home your own unique gift. All of this is set within a National Nature Reserve, so there are also lots of picturesque surroundings to enjoy whilst you’re out of the city.

Go inside the great houses of Glasgow with the National Trust for Scotland

Go behind the doors of some of Glasgow's amazing period homes

  • 00:00, 14 JUL 2021
  • Updated 13:52, 26 JUL 2021

house of travel glasgow

Cross the thresholds of some amazing houses in and around Glasgow and step back in time into your own period drama.

If you’ve ever wandered around the city you may even have walked past some of these front doors and fancy facades without realizing what lies behind.

They are perfectly preserved pieces of the local past and lovely places to wander around for an hour or two, or much more, as you immerse yourself in another time.

The National Trust for Scotland is the conservation charity that preserves and maintains many of the country’s most loved places and spaces, from tenements to stately homes, each a capsule of memories of times and people long gone.

Take a peek behind these doors, all within or close, to Glasgow.

The Tenement House

house of travel glasgow

From the gentle hiss of the working gaslights to the ball of soap, turned jet black from years of handling, or the jar of plum jam made in 1929, a visit to the Tenement House is an evocative step back in time.

At first glance, the Tenement House appears to be an ordinary middle-class tenement from the late 19th century, standing in Garnethill. However, when you step inside, the faithfully restored four rooms appear as if frozen in time and provide a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century.

house of travel glasgow

Shorthand typist Miss Agnes Toward lived here from 1911 until 1965, and preserved her furniture and possessions with love and care. She held on to all sorts of things that most people would have thrown away, and this extensive personal archive has become a valuable time capsule for visitors today. The Tenement House also reveals what it meant to be an ‘independent woman’ at that time.

• The Tenement House is approximately a 10-minute walk from the pedestrian precinct in Sauchiehall Street.

house of travel glasgow

This amazing family home was designed Alexander ‘ Greek’ Thomson who was one of the two great architects of international fame produced by Victorian Glasgow – the other, of course, was Charles Rennie mackintosh.

His personal Graeco-Egyptian style was almost entirely confined to Glasgow, and includes Holmwood, in the southside of the city, which was designed the house for paper magnate James Couper and his wife in 1857–8.

house of travel glasgow

It’s widely regarded as this Scottish architect’s finest domestic creation and his stunning design legacy impresses at every turn.

Inside, bold opulent decoration echoes the colours seen in ancient Greek temples while outside you can wander around the attractive riverside grounds and Victorian kitchen garden.

The house is part of an ongoing conservation project and there’s always something new for visitors to see.

• Holmwood is on Netherlee Road in Cathcart, and is 4 miles south of Glasgow city centre.

Pollok House

house of travel glasgow

This elegant stately home set in the scenic Pollok Country Park on the outskirts of Glasgow is where the National Trust for Scotland began, back in 1931.

Now the house is one of the grandest properties in the Trust’s care – with an extraordinary collection of Spanish art as well as as well as works by celebrated Scottosh painters, Raeburn and Guthrie.

Places you'll love to go with National Trust for Scotland

With almost 100 important sites in their care, the National Trust for Scotland is full of places to love. From historic castles and country houses to national nature reserves and adventure play parks, visitors can enjoy some of Scotland’s most amazing places and spaces. Become a member at www.nts.org.uk

The Maxwell family lived for six centuries on the site, but the main part of the present house was built in the mid-18th century – an example of Georgian grandeur that would be at home in a Jane Austen novel.

The house was extended in the early 20th century, but the 18th-century features were sympathetically preserved.

Sir William Stirling Maxwell amassed an extraordinary number of Spanish paintings, and portraits of the Habsburg rulers of Spain hang alongside powerful religious scenes.

Downstairs, the extent of the tiled passageway is an eye-opener to the scale of work it took to run this magnificent house.

• Pollok House is in Pollok Country Park in the Southside of Glasgow.

Culzean Castle & Country Park

house of travel glasgow

Robert Adam’s dramatic cliffside property rises above a world of woods, beaches, secret follies and play parks.

This glorious 260ha estate was once the playground of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis – a man who was keen to impress with his wealth and status.

The castle itself is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs, incorporating everything the earl could wish for in his country home. It was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century and is filled to the turrets with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived here.

Marvel at the interior, from the imposing entrance hall, which boasts one of the largest collections of British military flintlock pistols in the world, to the elegant rooms and bustling kitchen.

At its heart is Adam’s masterful centrepiece, a sweeping Oval Staircase with soaring colonnades and grand oil paintings, as well as the unique Round Drawing Room, which has panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde.

From the ghost of the bagpiper said to play in the caves below the castle to the unnerving portrait of Margaret Erskine of Dun, the wife of the 12th Earl of Cassillis, whose eye will follow you, there is much intrigue at Culzean.

• Culzean Castle is 12 miles south of Ayr and 4 miles west of Maybole.

The Hill House

house of travel glasgow

The Hill House in Helensburgh is considered to be Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Scottish masterpiece. Working to a commission from Glasgow book publisher Walter Blackie, up-and-coming architect Mackintosh and his wife Margaret created almost everything, from the building itself to the furniture and textiles.

However, the external render of the property has not proved watertight and the walls have gradually become saturated and are crumbling, with water now threatening the interiors so the National Trust for Scotland is using an ingenious concept to safeguard the property during a 10 year conservation programme.

house of travel glasgow

Stage one is a protective steel frame structure covered in chainmail mesh, featuring walkways around and over the top of the house, which allows visitors to walk over ther top of the house for, literaly, a birds eye view.

A new visitor centre with cafe and shop features delicious home baking plus a selection of Blackie-published books for both adults and children to read.

• The Hill House is in Helensburgh where there is a train service from Glasgow.

If you procrastinated about making plans to attend the Open Championship, your window is still open—barely

I f seeing the throngs of fans at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open motivated you to catch the last glimpse of men's major-championship golf this summer, you still have some options to book travel to Scotland for the Open Championship at Royal Troon. However, options are dwindling, especially if you're going to try to take the train into Glasgow.

Tickets to get in are plentiful—and a steal in comparison to the previous three majors. Masters tickets were easily four figures, and PGA and U.S. Open tickets crested at $200, but you can get in any day of Open Championship week (July 15-23) starting at $53 (Monday) and peaking at $134 (Friday). It's as easy as registering for a free account at the official Open resale portal and picking the day you want. Tickets there are all listed for a maximum of face value (and often less) from verified sellers, so there's no risk and no sticker shock.

Getting to Troon, which is about 45 minutes south of Glasgow International Airport, from the East Coast of the United States is still pretty straightforward even at the beginning of the hot European travel season. A direct flight from New York that lands in Glasgow early during tournament week and departs on the weekend is trending at just over $1,000. Get flexible with where you enter the United Kingdom and you can save hundreds: Going into London Gatwick on the same dates is about $515, but you'll have to figure out a way to get up north—a minimum five-hour train ride or a 475-mile drive in a rental car.

If you do decide to fly into one of the London airports and train it up to Scotland, be sure to book your train tickets as soon as possible because seats are almost gone. Fares start at about $50 from London Euston to Glasgow Central and escalate quickly depending on time and how express the service is. Scotrail offers complete timetables and online booking . Heading back to London at non-popular times (Friday night or Saturday morning) will be easier.

The Coylebrae House sleeps 12 and costs $6,675 per night during the Open Championship.

Even in the best of times, Troon isn't overflowing with budget hotel rooms. Open week means that rooms are scarce on the ground, but this Airbnb is less than a mile from the course entrance and can be had for $629 a night. Yes, you'll be sharing a house with some cats, but you'll have your own bathroom and will be just a few minutes walk from the town center.

Expand your budget (and bring some friends) and the Coylebrae House could be in play for you. This estate sleeps 12 in five king beds and two singles and sits eight miles from the course. The sticker is $6,675 per night with a five-night minimum stay. The space, game room and solitude would make for a perfect home base for a last-minute player entry where family, caddie and manager could all roll in the same place.

The Open Championship is celebrated for opening the gates wide for any fan to attend, which means the "regular" experience can be Tokyo-on-the-subway-like for some people. If you're interested in more elbow room—and a fireside chat with somebody like Gary Player or Colin Montgomerie—VIP ticket packages are still available directly from the Open. The Medallists package costs about $2,000, and offers a reserved seat in the grandstand at 18, private terrace viewing at the Marine Hotel adjacent to the course and visits by present and past players. Upgrade to the Champions package ($2,500) and get reserved seating at the first tee and 18th green, fine dining, more Q and As with players and a round on the Championship course on Monday.

Just remember you'll probably have to pay to check that big bag.

Attending the Open Championship at Royal Troon even at this late date might be less expensive than you think.
