South Korea summons Russia's ambassador over Moscow's new pact with North as inter-Korean tensions keep rising

Seoul, South Korea — South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador to protest Moscow's new defense pact with North Korea on Friday as tensions at the Koreas' heavily fortified border continued to rise with vague threats from Pyongyang and brief, seemingly accidental incursions by North Korean troops.

Earlier Friday, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a vague threat of retaliation after South Korean activists flew balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets across the border, and South Korea's military said it had fired warning shots the previous day to repel North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the rivals' land border for the third time this month .

That came two days after Moscow and Pyongyang reached a pact vowing mutual defense assistance if either is attacked, and a day after Seoul responded by saying it would consider providing arms to Ukraine to fight Russia's invasion .

South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev to protest the deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un and called for Moscow to immediately halt its alleged military cooperation with Pyongyang.

Kim, the South Korean diplomat, stressed that any cooperation that directly or indirectly helps the North build up its military capabilities would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions and pose a threat to the South's security and warned of consequences for Seoul's relations with Moscow.

Zinoviev replied that he would convey Seoul's concerns to his superiors in Moscow, the South Korean ministry said. Reuters reports that Zinoviev said he told Kim threats and blackmail against Moscow over its growing ties to Pyongyang are unacceptable.    

Leafletting campaigns by South Korean civilian activists in recent weeks have prompted a resumption of Cold War-style psychological warfare along the inter-Korean border.

The South Korean civilian activists, led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak, said it sent 20 balloons carrying 300,000 propaganda leaflets, 5,000 USB sticks with South Korean pop songs and TV dramas and 3,000 U.S. dollar bills from the South Korean border town of Paju on Thursday night.

Pyongyang resents such material and fears it could demoralize front-line troops and residents and eventually weaken Kim Jong Un's grip on power, analysts say.

In a statement carried by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency, Kim Yo Jong, one of her brother's top foreign policy officials, called the activists "defector scum" and issued what appeared to be a threat of retaliation.

"When you do something you were clearly warned not to do, it's only natural that you will find yourself dealing with something you didn't have to," she said, without specifying what the North would do.

After previous leafletting by South Korean activists, North Korea launched more than 1,000 balloons that dropped tons of trash in South Korea, smashing roof tiles and windows and causing other property damage. Kim Yo Jong previously hinted that balloons could become the North's standard response to leafletting, saying that the North would respond by "scattering dozens of times more rubbish than is being scattered on us."

In response, South Korea resumed anti-North Korea propaganda broadcasts with military loudspeakers installed at the border for the first time in years, to which Kim Yo Jong, in another state media statement, warned that Seoul was "creating a prelude to a very dangerous situation."

Tensions between the Koreas are at their highest in years as Kim Jong Un accelerates his nuclear weapons and missile development and attempts to strengthen his regional footing by aligning with Putin in a standoff against the U.S.-led West.

South Korea, a growing arms exporter with a well-equipped military backed by the United States, says it's considering upping support for Ukraine in response. Seoul has already provided humanitarian aid and other support while joining U.S.-led economic sanctions against Moscow. But it hasn't directly provided munitions, citing a long-standing policy of not supplying weapons to countries actively engaged in conflict.

Putin told reporters in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Thursday that supplying weapons to Ukraine would be "a very big mistake" and said South Korea "shouldn't worry" about the new agreement with North Korea if the South isn't planning aggression against Pyongyang.

South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul on Friday held separate phone calls with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa to discuss the new pact. The diplomats agreed that the agreement poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the region and vowed to strengthen trilateral coordination to deal with the challenges posed by the alignment between Moscow and Pyongyang, Cho's ministry said in a statement.

North Korea is extremely sensitive to criticism of Kim's authoritarian rule and efforts to reach its people with foreign news and other media.

In 2015, when South Korea restarted loudspeaker broadcasts for the first time in 11 years, North Korea fired artillery rounds across the border, prompting South Korea to return fire, according to South Korean officials. No casualties were reported.

South Korea's military said there are signs that North Korea was installing its own speakers at the border, although they weren't working yet.

In the latest border incident, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said several North Korean soldiers engaged in unspecified construction work briefly crossed the military demarcation line that divides the two countries at around 11 a.m. Thursday.

The South Korean military broadcast a warning and fired warning shots, after which the North Korean soldiers retreated. The joint chiefs didn't immediately release more details, including why it was releasing the information a day late.

South Korea's military says believes recent border intrusions weren't intentional, since the North Korean soldiers haven't returned fire and retreated after the warning shots.

The South's military has observed the North deploying large numbers of soldiers in frontline areas to build suspected anti-tank barriers, reinforce roads and plant mines in an apparent attempt to fortify their side of the border. Seoul believes the efforts are likely aimed at preventing North Korean civilians and soldiers from escaping to the South.

what is the talent/model agency’s role?

Talent/Model Agencies are your representatives for the entertainment industry that work on a 10-20% commission of your payment for work on projects you work for through the agency. Industry professionals such as directors, producers and casting directors in most cases do not want to talk directly with the talent as they have production responsibilities and would prefer to talk with a legal representative on the talent’s behalf.

The role of the agent is to be our talents’ representative. To submit or connect you with clients that can hire you for work. Submit you to casting calls, to book auditions and callbacks, to negotiate a contract, and to supply the actor/model with all the information and tools that she/he needs in order to do a good job. Once submitted and you get an audition, it is up to you to get the job with your marketing materials, skills, abilities and/or experience. That is why it is critical that you keep all your materials up to date, professional looking and continue to work on your craft when working with an agency. Legitimate, reputable agents will only get paid after an actor/model has booked a project and payment has been received. The rate is generally 10%-20% of the actor/model’s gross pay. Since reputable agents are paid only when you get paid, it is in their best interest to keep you working.

how do i submit to the agency?

Submissions are done through our online submission form. Our agents stay very busy and do not have the time to meet with each applicant. The decision to interview applicants are made from the online submissions. Once you have submitted the submission is reviewed by the agents for those we feel we can use to fill slots we need filled. Please do not call about your submission as we receive a high volume of submissions and are unable to check them daily.

do you have open calls or accept “walk-ins”?

At this time we are not holding open calls nor accepting “walk-ins”.

is experience required to submit?

We are always looking for new faces for the agency from “real” people with no or very little experience as Extras to union actors with extensive resumes.

do i need a professional headshot?

We do not require professional headshots for submissions but you must have one if accepted by the agency.

will i hear back from my submission?

We do not accept everyone that submits. Once the agents receive your submission, they will then determine if we have a need for you in your category and if you would be a good fit for our agency. Everyone will receive an email regarding their submission. If we feel we can add you to our roster, we will set an appointment for you. This could take 2-3 weeks. Please do not call about your submission.

what does the agency look for in a talent or model?

ACTORS, union or non-union, can be any age, ethnicity, size with experience in films, commercials, training videos and/or voice over work. These can be speaking or non-speaking. EXTRAS are those new in the business who have no or very little experience and are used for non-speaking, background fill-ins. MODELS may appear in print ads such as brochures, newspapers, magazines, outdoor advertising and sometime extra work. CHILDREN need to be outgoing, take and follow directions well. Must have good attention span and memorization skills are always a plus and in most cases they will have to miss school when working on projects. Good grades and perfect school attendance is most important.

if accepted what is my upfront cost?

There isn’t a fee to submit or register with an agency however you will have to have professional photos if accepted. These are your calling cards as your first contact with clients. You will be required to list on the agency website which will be small one time fee. Remember, reputable agents never charge any kind of fees or dues outside of their stated commission charges. Since the invention of the internet and websites, agents do have a small one time charge for you to be on their website. If an agent tells you otherwise, tries to sell you classes, sends to you “their” photographer or ask for any other types of fees, find another one. Do your research before making decisions.

will i be required to sign an exclusive contract with the agency?

If accepted you will be required to sign an exclusive one year contract for the Southeast region in all areas of the business and cannot list with any other agency in this region. You are not an employee of the agency but an independent contractor as defined in the IRS Publication 15, Circular E, Employer’s Tax Guide.

what kind of services do you provide and how does the agency get me work?

Our agents cover a range of services including film, television, commercial, industrial, voice over, print and hosting opportunities. An agency does not get you work. We submit your materials to clients who need talent/model for their project. The client has the final decision as to who they want to see, interview or see a self taped audition from if necessary, that is why you need updated, professional materials. It is then up to you to land the job.

can i make a living in this business?

Generally in the Southeast if you are experienced and prepared to travel extensively you might be able to work on a semi-regular basis. Some talent/models have a part-time job, have a flexible schedule at work, or have a support system which gives them the opportunity to travel to auditions and/or work. However, the majority of the non union work in this business is like any other job, Monday – Friday, normal business hours with a few exceptions. Payments can sometimes take 60-90 days after the job is completed to receive for work done. Union work has set fees, rules and regulations. Those are negotiated by the Screen Actors Guild and/or the American Federation of Television and Radio Artist. Refer to http://www.sagaftra.org .

The billionaire Andy Ronson (Clive Owen) — a technological genius who serves as an antagonist and, ultimately, tragic figure in the FX limited series “ A Murder at the End of the World ” — may bear a more-than-passing resemblance to certain tycoons of our time. But creator, director and star Brit Marling had an older inspiration in mind.

“A Murder at the End of the World” follows amateur investigator Darby Hart (Emma Corrin), author of a hit true crime memoir, to Ronson’s rural retreat in Iceland. There, she briefly reunites with her ex-boyfriend Bill (Harris Dickinson), who once worked with her to track down a serial killer before becoming a world-famous artist. But when Bill ends up dead just as a storm cuts off their hotel from the outside world, Darby starts sleuthing. It’s a quest that leads her to bigger questions about wealth hoarding, artificial intelligence and collective culpability. Without spoilers, the culprit turns out to be a clever twist on the Agatha Christie-inflected template the filmmakers best known for Netflix’s “The OA” put their characteristically cerebral spin on.

Marling is a fan of both Christie’s novels and other classics of the genre, including Owen’s previous star turn in Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park.” With “A Murder at the End of the World,” she and Batmanglij fused the classic format with the more contemporary craze for true crime. “It isn’t a genre that I know that deeply or intimately, but I do understand the impulse for it,” MarIing speculates. “I think the draw is that modern life feels a little bit like a whodunit. We’re in a really strange time, and things are very fucked up. And I think we’re all looking around and being like, ‘Okay, who’s to blame for this?’”

Though she typically plays the lead role in her projects with Batmanglij, to bring Darby’s story to life, Marling cast herself in a supporting role (as Andy’s wife and Darby’s hacker role model, Lee) and used the extra bandwidth to step behind the camera as a director for the first time in her career. “I’m so glad that I did that, because it was really satisfying to get to take things from the imagination onto the page, and then from on the page to on the screen through the edit,” Marling reflects. “Sometimes there’s a gap between what you’d want and what you were able to achieve. But it is a real pleasure to be able to do that. Because when you don’t do that, as a writer, you’re surrendering a lot. You just have to practice the art of surrender, you know?”

“A Murder at the End of the World” ends in a definitive fashion. But from Hercule Poirot to Benoit Blanc, the most iconic private detectives transcend individual stories, taking their talents across locales. When asked if she and Batmanglij envision a similar future for Darby Hart, Marling seems open to the idea. “We thought of this story as having a very specific beginning, middle and end,” she says. But I think we also thought, ‘This Darby has become quite a vivid character. So if the audience appetite is there, and our appetite is there, and we feel a sense of a new story that we could tell — I think you’re right, that Darby Hart could travel all over the world. We could find her anywhere next.”
