19 Best Things to Do in Auckland, New Zealand

In Maori, the native language of New Zealand, the city of Auckland is known as "Tamaki Makaurau," meaning "a place desired by many," which is only fitting given how much there is to enjoy in New Zealand's most populated city.

Waitemata Harbour Waitemata Harbour free

No trip to Auckland is complete without getting out on the harbor and feeling the sea breeze toy with your hair, plunging into the water for a swim or enjoying a spot of fishing. Auckland’s nickname is the "City of Sails," after all.

The harbor sprawls from downtown Auckland and beaches like Mission Bay across to the North Shore – home to beautiful beaches and tourist spots like Devonport – and beyond. Tourists can catch a ferry from central Auckland across the Waitemata Harbour and into the Hauraki Gulf where popular attractions include Waiheke Island and the hiking hub of Rangitoto Island .

Imagine  New York 's Central Park , but with an Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand) twist, and you've got Cornwall Park. This sprawling park, which sits on a volcanic cone, offers an abundance of greenery, plus unique features like the remnants of a pre-European Maori fort and the remains of Sir John Logan Campbell, the park's donor.

AJ Hackett Auckland SkyJump & SkyWalk at Sky Tower AJ Hackett Auckland SkyJump & SkyWalk at Sky Tower

The most noticeable structure in Auckland's skyline is the 1076-foo-tall Sky Tower. At the top, visitors can take in 360-degree views of the city, eat at the cafe, dine at one of two restaurants (including one that revolves), walk over glass flooring panels or grab a drink at new hot spot, SkyBar, which is New Zealand’s highest bar. A gift shop is available as well.

Previous travelers praised the Sky Tower's views, suggesting visiting on a clear day to avoid obstructed vistas. Sunset-lovers will want to visit around that time to watch the city bask in sinking rays. If you do decide to eat here, book your dining reservations in advance. And remember, Sky Tower admissions are waived for visitors dining on site. The only complaint among visitors? The ticket cost, which reviewers say is too high.

Hunua Ranges Hunua Ranges free

A hub for hiking, mountain biking, camping and fishing, the Hunua Ranges is an approximately 150-square-mile forest that sits about 30 miles southeast of central Auckland. The star attraction is the spectacular Hunua Falls, which cascades about 100 feet into the Wairoa River. The waterfall can be accessed via a 15-minute walk, which winds along a stream and ends with a lookout platform. Those who want to venture farther into the park can continue along the track, which loops back into the base of the falls.

Swimming at the Hunua Falls isn’t recommended due to safety risks, but there’s enough trails to keep visitors busy. One of the most popular is the approximately 5-mile-long Cossey-Massey Loop. It’s a hit with past visitors thanks to the spectacular views and a well-maintained path, not to mention shade and plenty of birds. In between hikes, heed the advice of recent visitors and enjoy a picnic among the park’s lush vegetation. Camping areas can also be booked online , with campsites costing NZ$9.50 (around $6) per night for adults and NZ$4.50 (less than $3) for children.

There’s something for everyone in Matakana, just an hour’s drive north of Auckland. The town is best known for the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market , which takes place every Saturday in a parking lot that transforms into a buzzing market brimming with local vendors selling delicious cheeses or specialty wines like feijoa-flavored sparkling wine. Many of the stalls also offer samples. Past travelers rave about the produce on offer, but some have found products overpriced. It can also get so crowded it’s difficult to make your way through the stalls. The market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and it’s vital to arrive early to secure parking, according to reviewers.

The village also has boutique stores, great coffee spots, bars and restaurants, while surrounding areas are home to wineries, breweries and distilleries. With a diverse array of wines, including chardonnay and sangiovese, the wine region can be explored by self-driving using the Matakana Wine Growers’ Wine Trail Map . Located on Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf (and within view of  Rangitoto Island  and  Waiheke Island ), this pest-free island and wildlife sanctuary is considered one of New Zealand's most successful conservation projects. Thousands of volunteers worked under the direction of the Department of Conservation to eradicate species-killing pests from the island, and between 1984 and 1994, around 300,000 native trees were planted. As part of the conservation efforts, 11 species of threatened native birds were reintroduced back onto the island. Notable wildlife found on the island include little spotted kokako, tieke (saddleback), kiwis, tuatara and takahe.

Recent visitors appreciated this wildlife sanctuary's natural beauty and its top-notch hiking trails, adding that they saw several bird species during their visits.

Auckland War Memorial Museum Auckland War Memorial Museum

The main objective of the Auckland War Memorial Museum is to tell the story of the Auckland region. To that end, the museum, which is housed in a memorial that honors fallen service members, hosts exhibits featuring taonga (treasures) from New Zealand’s native Maori people and displays showcasing Pacific Island natives and other ethnic communities who have made Auckland home. The area's natural history, archaeology, art and military history are also a focus.

According to previous museumgoers, the Auckland War Memorial Museum is a must-see attraction when visiting Tamaki Makaurau (the Maori name for Auckland). Many praised the interesting exhibits, citing the ones about New Zealand's Maori culture as highlights. Reviewers reported spending between three and four hours here, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. Others suggested taking advantage of the museum’s late closure on Tuesdays to avoid the school groups that usually visit during weekdays.

New Zealand Maritime Museum New Zealand Maritime Museum

To learn about the City of Sails' ties to the sea, check out the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Located in the Viaduct Harbour precinct along the water, this museum is packed with artifacts documenting New Zealand's rich maritime history. Its collection includes more than 130 watercraft representing a variety of different subjects, including vessels used for whaling, European exploration voyages, Polynesian and Maori navigation, lifeboat services and more.

Recent visitors said this attraction's exhibits are interesting and family-friendly. Many were especially impressed with the museum's Blue Water Black Magic gallery, which features Sir Peter Blake's championship yacht. Blake is New Zealand’s most celebrated sailor. Tourists also loved the Maori section. If you visit on a sunny day, travelers recommend purchasing an upgraded ticket, which covers museum admissions, plus a one-hour cruise on the property's restored ship, the Ted Ashby. Though visitors warn there is a lot of information to take in here, they say the museum’s displays and interactive games manage to engage kids of all ages.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves Waitomo Glowworm Caves

This world-famous natural wonder, which is situated about 120 miles south of Auckland, features a boat ride through Glowworm Grotto, where thousands of glowworms illuminate the cave ceiling. New Zealand is one of the few places in the world where these bright, tiny creatures can be found. A number of the attraction’s tour guides, who tell the site’s stories, legends and history, are descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the caves.

Although some former travelers have been disappointed that the boat portion of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves tour was shorter than they anticipated (about 10 to 15 minutes), most found the attraction interesting and well worth a visit. While the caves are beautiful, the star attraction is the glowworms. However, photography and videography are not allowed in any part of the caves, so keep cameras stowed when inside. Visitors are also asked to keep quiet during the boat portion of the tour.

Tipping on a Tour

You might be wondering what the etiquette is for tipping when you take a tour in New Zealand. Tipping is neither required nor expected in New Zealand. People in New Zealand get paid a living wage, even servers, and tips are not relied on to supplement wages.

Tipping tour guides and drivers is more common though, mainly because they are providing a service to visitors from North America and other countries where tipping is common practice.

If you believe your tour guide provided an exceptional service or experience and you would like to leave a small token of appreciation, 5-10% of the tour price matching the level of service you believe you received is a good rule of thumb, and 2% for drivers (if different to the guide). You would hand this tip directly to the guide at the end of the tour.

Tipping is completely at your discretion. If it’s not in your budget, don’t worry! A great review also goes a long way.

Where to Stay in Auckland

Inside of a pod room at Lylo Hostel in Auckland.

Since most tours either meet at designated place in the city center or offer pickup from an Auckland city hotel, it’s best to stay near the action. Anywhere near SkyCity, Britomart or the Viaduct are great options.

21 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Auckland

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Updated Dec 22, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Michael Law visited Auckland in March and April 2023 as part of an extended trip through New Zealand.

The harborside city of Auckland is New Zealand's only true metropolis and the vibrant economic heart of the country. Known as the "City of Sails" and boasting a population of nearly 1.7 million people, or nearly half the country's total population, Auckland sprawls out between Manukau Harbour to the west and Waitemata Harbour to the east. The city's compact central district sits right beside the waterway.

Auckland's waterfront and Sky Tower

Auckland was our point of arrival and departure on our most recent trip, and we spent several days soaking up the vibe of the city's waterfront and downtown, as well as exploring the attractions outside the city center. Having not been to the city in well over a decade, we were shocked and impressed with the transformation the city has undergone.

While many people fly in and head out to see other parts of the country, this is definitely a worthwhile place to visit and spend some time.

Auckland is home to some of the country's finest museums and galleries but is also popular for its fine beaches. Also worth checking out are the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, which provide a taste of New Zealand's spectacular national park scenery right on the city's doorstep.

For more sightseeing ideas have a read through our list of the top tourist attractions in Auckland.

Auckland's waterfront at night

Auckland's waterfront is the best place for tourists to head to enjoy the city. With restaurants, shops, hotels, fabulous views over the water, and a fun vibe day and night, this is the city's showpiece area. On our last visit to Auckland, this is where we spent most of our time.

The waterfront is divided into several main areas. Running from the west these are the main areas.

North Wharf

A short scenic stroll from Viaduct Harbour is the trendy North Wharf area. It's packed with restaurants and less touristy than Viaduct Harbour. Whatever cuisine you are in the mood for, you'll likely be able to find it here at slightly cheaper prices.

Ten restaurants fill old maritime sheds dating from the 1930s, which have been wonderfully restored but still showcase their original purpose and some of their gritty heritage.

After dinner, be sure to work off all the calories with a short stroll down to Silo Park. Here you'll find seven restored silos, a children's playground, public art installations, and good views out over St. Marys Bay. Take a quick tour through Silo 6 if an art show is taking place, or perhaps you'll be lucky enough to catch a movie projected against Silo 7.

Viaduct Harbour

Viaduct Harbour

The regeneration of Viaduct Harbour is a legacy of New Zealand hosting the America's Cup yachting regatta and has turned this waterside area into one of the city's main entertainment and dining hubs.

The vibrant waterside cafés and restaurants are great places to visit and linger over lunch or dinner. In the evening, the harbor area is packed with people strolling the docks taking in the nighttime scene. See if you can snag a table at Bivacco for some of Auckland's best Italian food.

As well as being one of the country's major marinas, Viaduct Harbour's lively calendar of events is also worth checking out. Every Sunday, from 9am to 12noon, the Flower Market here brings in crowds with live music and street food, while regular free events during summer months are a favorite with local families.

Ferry Terminal and Queen Street

Ferry Building in downtown Auckland

The imposing Ferry Building , built in 1912, forms a striking English-Baroque landmark on the harbor front at Queen's Wharf. It's from here that ferries depart for all the outer islands and other parts of the city across Waitemata Harbour.

We used this as our key landmark when we wanted to find our way from Viaduct Harbour over to the downtown core and the attractions of Queen Street. An easy stroll south from the ferry terminal takes you into a pedestrian-only area with the modern Commercial Bay shopping center off to your left.

Queen Street is a pleasant area with all manner of local and international shops. If you've forgotten something or need to get supplies prior to heading to explore the rest of the country, this is the place to do it.

You'll know you've found the top of Queen Street when you see the stunning marble façade of Auckland Town Hall.

Auckland Sky Tower from the waterfront

Auckland's needle-like Sky Tower is the city's most prominent landmark and, at 328 meters high, is New Zealand's highest building.

If you're looking for a place to snap the perfect city panorama, then the observation deck here — reached by zooming up to the top of the building in a glass elevator — is just the place to get your camera out, with views stretching into the distance for 80 kilometers on a clear day.

Auckland Sky Tower

For many Sky Tower visitors, though, it's about more than the view. New Zealanders are renowned for turning attractions into thrill-seeking opportunities, and the Sky Tower doesn't buck the trend. Visitors can enjoy dizzying views by walking the exterior 192-meter-high Sky Walk platform around the tower's pergola, and those looking for a total adrenaline rush can base-jump off the platform on a Sky Jump .

A restaurant and gift shop are also available on-site. Also, be sure to catch a glimpse of the tower at night when it's lit up to great effect.

Bungee jumping off the Auckland Harbour Bridge

The central harbor is dominated by Auckland Harbour Bridge , completed in 1959 and more than one kilometer long and some 43 meters high, which connects downtown Auckland to the northern districts and the sandy beaches of the bays farther north.

The bridge also offers plenty of fun things to do to add a thrill to your sightseeing experience. One of the top-rated thrills to experience is the Auckland Harbour Bridge bungee jump , an experience that includes traversing an exclusive bridge walk before plunging 40 meters to the harbor water below.

If bungee jumping is not your thing, you can still enjoy the incredible views from the top of the bridge by joining a guided Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb .

Address: Quay Street, City Center, Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand Maritime Museum

New Zealanders have always been deeply connected with the sea, and the well-curated New Zealand Maritime Museum explores this connection, offering a comprehensive survey of the country's seafaring history.

Exhibits trace the country's history from the arrival of the first Polynesians and include Maori canoes and outrigger boats, whaling equipment, and old instruments and implements. One gallery is devoted to New Zealand's modern yachting success and includes the yacht in which the New Zealand crew, skippered by Sir Peter Blake, won the America's Cup in 1995.

Many of the vessels held in the collection regularly sail, which adds a real dose of excitement to a sightseeing trip.

The winding road up One Tree Hill

For many Aucklanders, the volcanic cone of One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) is the symbol of their city. The 182-meter-high hill sits amid the lush Cornwall Park with a series of flower beds and stands of mature trees set amid walking trails.

One Tree Hill takes up the southwest corner of the park, and the slopes contain remnants of a Maori Pa , a fortified village located here during the pre-European era. At the top of the hill is a lone obelisk built over the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell who gifted this swath of greenery to Auckland to be used as a city park. There are fantastic views across the cityscape from the hill summit.

One Tree Hill

Having done this activity recently, I can assure you a trip to the top is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared for a long walk up a relatively steep, paved roadway. The walk is 1.8 kilometers each way with a 77-meter elevation gain, so if you were planning on bringing grandma for a leisurely stroll up to the top, think again!

The large tree that used to stand on the summit and gave the place its name was repeatedly vandalized and had to be removed in 2001. In 2016 nine new seedlings were planted with the plan to have one eventually chosen as the replacement.

If you have mobility issues and want to access the top with a vehicle, call Auckland Town Council, they will assign you a code that will open the gate.

Address: Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland, New Zealand

Pier in Devonport

For a bit of light sightseeing and a break from the urban jungle of downtown Auckland, take a short, scenic, and cheap ferry trip across Waitemata Harbour to Devonport. This delightful seaside area is an enjoyable spot and offers unrivaled panoramas back toward the city.

Devonport's waterfront area has a modern pier complete with seaside restaurants offering decent fare and even better views. If you are traveling as a family and have young children that need to burn off a bit of energy, a fantastic park with a variety of play structures is nearby.

Be sure to wander along King Edward Parade from the pier area to see well-preserved 19th-century homes and Victoria Road to do a bit of shopping in the interesting and eclectic shops.

Auckland Art Gallery exterior

Auckland Art Gallery is the city's most impressive cultural site. Housed in an impressive French Renaissance-style structure built in 1887, the gallery is home to New Zealand's most extensive art collection with more than 15,000 artworks on display.

The permanent galleries host an array of artworks, including European paintings and sculptures that date back to the 14th century. But of particular note, however, is the main New Zealand collection . Located on the ground floor, here you'll find a substantial amount of work highlighting Maori and Pacific Island artists.

Be sure to also visit the New Zealand Historic Art Gallery and Maori Portraiture Gallery on the first floor, which showcases the work of New Zealand's early European settlers. Guided tours are available, and a café and shop are located on the premises.

Address: Wellesley Street E, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Auckland's imposing War Memorial Museum sits on the highest point of Auckland Domain in a vast Neoclassical building dating from 1929, which was erected as a memorial dedicated to the New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I. Today, it houses an impressive collection of artifacts that traces the history of New Zealand from its first Polynesian settlers to the present day and highlights New Zealand's natural heritage.

Of special interest are the Main Maori Galleries , which host a wealth of artistry, including a magnificent Maori gateway dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries; a richly-decorated Meeting House; and the 25-meter-long canoe, dating from 1836, in which Maori warriors once sailed into Manukau Harbour.

The first floor hosts the natural history collection , including reconstructing the country's famed and now extinct giant moa birds. The top floor of the museum is dedicated to the war memorials and displays the story of New Zealand's involvement in world conflict throughout the country's history. Guided tours are available, along with regular lectures and workshops.

Waiheke Island

Of all Auckland's Hauraki Gulf islands, Waiheke Island is the most popular to visit. Around 8,000 people live here year-round, and the island's villages are home to art galleries and a thriving café culture, while the coast hosts plenty of white-sand beaches.

For keen walkers and hikers, a variety of trails wind along the coastline and through the island interior. For spectacular views and a challenging hike, the Church Bay Circuit is an excellent three-hour walk that showcases the best of the island.

History fans shouldn't miss Stony Batter Historic Reserve with its underground tunnel system carved out in World War II in case Auckland was attacked. Regular ferries to Waiheke Island run from Princes Wharf in central Auckland and take from 35-45 minutes.

For those wanting to linger longer, a variety of good accommodation options are available, from beachside cottage rentals to bed and breakfasts.

Location: Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand

Antarctic Encounter gallery at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium

One of Auckland's top attractions for visiting families, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium allows you to get up close and personal with life under the water. A series of huge aquariums containing aquatic life can be observed from the tunnel walkways with aquariums devoted to sharks, tropical fish, and stingrays.

Kelly Tarlton's also houses an Antarctic Encounter gallery , complete with a snow-filled penguin enclosure, highlighting New Zealand's close association with Antarctica's international scientific communities.

New in 2023 is the Sea Cave Adventure marine zone. Highlighting the creatures that call the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park home, this fascinating exhibit provides education and insight into one of New Zealand's most important maritime treasures.

Address: 23 Tamaki Drive, Orakei, Auckland 1071, New Zealand

A dolphin off Auckland

If you've only got room for a single tour when in Auckland, make it a dolphin and whale-watching cruise . These superb-value tours depart from the centrally located New Zealand Maritime Museum in Viaduct Harbour and all but guarantee a sighting (if not, you can travel again for free).

This exciting half-day catamaran tour features expert guides well-versed in the region and its diverse wildlife and will ensure you have a chance to get as close as possible to creatures, including whales (six species), dolphins, penguins, and birds to snap some great photos.

Much of your time afloat will be spent in the beautiful Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, an area dotted with splendid scenery. In addition to bringing along binoculars, be sure to pack warm (and waterproof) clothing and/or a sun hat, depending on the weather.

Stardome Observatory & Planetarium

Whether you're traveling with kids or not, there are plenty of good reasons to want to include Stardome Observatory & Planetarium on your Auckland travel itinerary. Established in 1967 and expanded a great deal since, what started as the public Auckland Observatory is now a state-of-the-art astronomical research observatory plus a major city attraction offering a great deal of fun (and education) for all ages.

Located in the One Tree Hill area, the observatory's two telescopes are accessible to visitors as part of a fascinating presentation, where all guests are given a chance to take a peek at the night sky. The experience consists of a pre-presentation show in the planetarium to provide some perspective, as well as a chance to explore the attraction's exhibits.

The observatory closed temporarily in 2023 for renovations; check to see that it has reopened before visiting.

Address: 670 Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland 1345, New Zealand

Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Islands

The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Islands are a lush slice of nature right on Auckland's doorstep. Ruggedly beautiful Great Barrier Island is a must-visit for wilderness fans, with a multitude of camping, hiking, mountain biking, and sea kayaking opportunities.

Rangitoto Island is a dormant volcano and home to the world's largest forest of pohutukawa trees. Hiking to the island's summit rewards walkers with stunning views across the Hauraki Gulf.

Tiny Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary for some of New Zealand's most endangered birdlife with various easy walking trails winding through the island's interior. Among the species that keen bird-watchers can spot here are takahe, blue penguins, kiwi, and brown teal. Ferries leave from Princes Wharf in the central city.

In addition to fun tourist-focused sightseeing cruises, fishing charters, and other water-based activities, such as sailing, can be enjoyed here.

Takapuna Beach

The city's eastern coast is speckled with gorgeous forest-rimmed beaches that are top swimming and sun-bathing spots for locals during summer weekends. Takapuna Beach , overlooking Rangitoto Island across the water, is one of the finest sandy strips in the city and is deservedly popular. Nearby are both Milford Beach and Cheltenham Beach, which tend to be less crowded.

A short drive out of the city, though, brings you to even more spectacular beaches. To the southeast is lovely Maraetai Beach with its calm waters, an excellent swimming spot even for families traveling with little ones, while a short journey north from Auckland is the golden sand of Orewa Beach .

Be prepared for exceptionally chilly water if you plan to take a dip. The hardy Kiwis will claim "It's just fine mate" as their lips turn blue and they start to shiver!

Location: East Auckland, New Zealand

Albert Park

The most central green space in the city is Albert Park with its elaborate Victorian fountain , variety of statuary, and a multitude of flower beds. As well as being a tranquil spot amid the inner-city hustle, the park is home to a variety of small and quirky attractions that will please culture vultures.

Albert Park House contains an eclectic array of ceramics and clocks; a floral clock (dating from 1953) marks the park's Princes Street entry, and the city's Meteorological Observatory at the park's highest point has been marking Auckland's weather since 1909.

The most prominent historic building nearby is the Old Government House , now part of the Auckland University campus. This timber Neoclassical structure (built in 1856) was New Zealand's first parliament. Opposite the Old Government House is the Old Synagogue , dating from 1884, which is now used for cultural events.

Those visiting Auckland in July should check out the Turama Festival , a fun illumination-focused event that has become one of the best things to do in Auckland at night.

Address: Princes Street, City Center, Auckland, New Zealand

West Coast Beaches

Auckland's west coast is home to some extremely beautiful beaches, but visitors should be aware that many can be dangerous for bathers unused to their sheer rocks, heavy surf from the Tasman Sea, and treacherous undertow.

Piha Beach is the city's most dramatic spot for a picnic and sunbathing with its volcanic black sand and jutting rock outcrops. It's also a major haunt for local surfers.

If you're looking for a secluded slice of sand though, Karioitahi Beach , at Waiuku in South Auckland, is a long strip of black-sand beach that rarely draws more than a handful of sun-seekers.

Location: West Auckland, New Zealand

Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT)

Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) , located in the Western Springs district, is devoted to the history of technology and transport in New Zealand. Its prize exhibits relate to the New Zealand aviation pioneer Richard Pearse (1877-1953), who made his first flights about the same time as the Wright brothers.

Also interesting, the 90 Degrees South exhibition is dedicated to the trans-Antarctic expedition of New Zealand explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Other items include old coaches, railroad rolling stock, trams and vintage cars, and a vast collection of black and white photography.

A variety of fun workshops and educational programs are offered, and for a real treat, take a ride on one of the vintage trams that operate from the museum.

Address: Great North Road, Western Springs, Auckland, New Zealand

Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens

For a relaxing stroll while exploring the countryside just north of Auckland (it's about 50 kilometers north of the city), the Kaipara Coast Plant Centre & Sculpture Gardens make a good break from the road.

This manicured garden trail in a quiet valley setting is packed full of native fauna and hosts an ever-changing array of sculptural art by New Zealand artists. More than 50 sculptures are on display along the one-kilometer pathway at any one time creating garden galleries that highlight the best of the country's contemporary art.

For nature fans, the gardens offer a broad spectrum of New Zealand's many varied landscapes with different sections set out as pine forests, native bush, and typical farmland. Another trail through the native forest is dedicated to conservation and loops across meandering streams and beside waterfalls.

The Auckland Botanic Gardens is also worth a visit and is set amid 64 hectares. Highlights include an impressive collection of 10,000 plants, including a large number of rose bushes.

Address: 1481 Kaipara Coast Highway, Kaukapakapa 0843, New Zealand

A ring-tailed lemur at the Auckland Zoo

Set across 40 acres in the Western Springs neighborhood, Auckland Zoo offers plenty of fun things to do for families traveling to the area. Established in 1922, the zoo has several newer features, including a great section-Te Wao Nui-which focuses on regional plant and animal life.

Highlights include more than 1,400 creatures from some 135 species contained in themed areas featuring animals from Africa, Australia, and South America, including giraffes, meerkats, wallabies, and a variety of monkeys.

A variety of unique experiences are available, with fun things to do including an after-dark safari, photography workshops, and junior zookeeper programs that take kids behind the scenes.

If there's still time in your day for the kids to burn off some energy, head to Rainbow's End . This fun theme park features an area dedicated to younger children.

Address: Motions Road, Auckland, New Zealand

Howick Historical Village

Those interested in New Zealand's colonial past would do well to pay a visit to Howick Historical Village . This fascinating recreation of a colonial village features some 30 authentic historic buildings dating from the mid to late-19th century, which were disassembled and rebuilt on-site.

Highlights include guided tours, re-enactments, and demonstrations presented by costumed guides and trades folk, as well as a delightful garden. Other fun things to do include taking a wagon ride around the property. A café and gift shop are located on-site.

Address: Lloyd Elsmore Park, Bells Road, Pakuranga, Auckland 2010, New Zealand

Puhoi village

About 50 kilometers north of Auckland, the little township of Puhoi is one of the best day trips out of Auckland . Founded in the 1860s by immigrants from Bohemia (in modern-day Czech Republic), Puhoi has kept much of its original early-settler character and retains a bucolic timeless appeal.

The Bohemia Museum , the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (built in 1880), and the nearby churchyard with the graves of early Bohemian settlers are a must for history fans, while a clutch of art studios and artisan boutiques provide ample shopping diversions. There are also plentiful hiking opportunities in the surrounding countryside.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to New Zealand

See the best places to stay, dine, and experience the beauty of New Zealand, according to a local.

Amy Louise Bailey is a freelance content creator and media specialist. Her work has been published in Vogue , Harper’s Bazaar , Elle , Condé Nast Traveler, Bloomberg Pursuits , and Robb Report .

Bay of Islands

Christchurch, best times to visit new zealand, how to get there, transportation.

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

When people learn I’m from New Zealand , I often hear that it’s at the top of their bucket list — or, if they’ve been, that it’s their favorite country in the world.  I may be biased, but I am not surprised. The stunning natural beauty, thriving culinary scene, and unique outdoor activities would charm even the most seasoned traveler.

Everywhere you look, there’s a picture-perfect backdrop filled with greenery and crystal-clear waters. And although it has a lot of untouched land, it boasts the same highlights you would find in any major global city, with art galleries, shopping districts, nightlife, and luxury hotels. Plus, it’s politically stable and very safe, which are increasingly appealing traits.

Geographically, the country is divided into two islands with distinct characteristics: the North Island is full of beaches and is home to the main cities, and the South Island is an alpine wonderland defined by majestic mountain landscapes, rugged coasts, and world-class ski slopes. There has been a lot of development over the past few years, and travelers have more places to eat, stay, and play than ever before.  Below, see Travel + Leisure ’s essential guide to making the most of this magical South Pacific destination, according to a local.

Angelina Pilarinos/Travel + Leisure

North Island

The North Island is lined with beautiful beaches and islands surrounding the narrow coasts. It’s also where the capital, Wellington, is located, along with the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, Auckland , which is an essential destination on any New Zealand itinerary (and the gateway for most international flights). As Annie Dundas, the Director Destination at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, notes, Auckland is “an urban oasis — the perfect fusion of a busy, modern city that looks out to mesmerizing landscapes and islands — all within easy reach and laden with wineries and leisurely places for long lunches.” It is worth spending at least four days in Auckland, but the North Island has many unique areas to explore, and below, we’ve charted the key destinations to prioritize.

Things to Do

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is a popular day trip for locals and is accessible by boat, ferry, or helicopter from downtown Auckland. It’s filled with boutique wineries, restaurants, and beautiful beaches and is especially popular in the summer months when music festivals and jazz concerts are hosted in sprawling vineyards. There’s also a contemporary art sculpture trail, Sculpture on the Gulf , hosted each summer, enticing many Aucklanders across the harbor for a cultured day out. Pop over for the day, tour the wineries, get a scoop of ice cream at Island Gelato Company , and wander around the artisan boutiques. If you’d like to spend the night, there are high-end rentals available on Waiheke Unlimited and Vrbo , or for a hotel, go for Delamore Lodge .

Visit the Auckland Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery

For a close-up view of New Zealand’s culture and history, visit the stately Auckland Museum , where you’ll find a collection of national artifacts along with a rotation of exhibitions. It’s set at the top of the city’s main park and is within walking distance of Auckland CBD, where the Auckland Art Gallery is located. Here, you’ll find some of the country’s most valuable artworks, along with various international collections. Both are worthwhile attractions that can be ticked off in half a day.

Explore Commercial Bay and Britomart

Downtown Auckland has been transformed over the past decade and has become the city’s most vibrant shopping and dining hub. It’s bustling from day to night and is especially packed on Friday nights for after-work drinks and dinner. You can find some of the city’s best restaurants and cocktail bars within a small vicinity, and it’s a fashion mecca with storefronts from major brands and local fashion designers (be sure to check out Karen Walker , Kate Sylvester , and Zambesi ).

Courtesy of Park Hyatt Auckland

Park Hyatt Auckland

Since opening in 2020, the Park Hyatt has become the crème de la crème of the Auckland hotel scene. It has a prime location, excellent views, amenities, restaurants, and spacious rooms with freestanding bathtubs and terraces overlooking the Viaduct Harbor — ideal for room service with some atmosphere. It’s within walking distance of the best bars, restaurants, and shops, but it feels like a serene enclave where you can manage to get a good night’s sleep, despite being right by the action.

The Hotel Britomart

As the name suggests, this chic hotel is located right in the heart of Britomart, surrounded by some of Auckland’s best shopping and dining. Rooms are sleek and modern yet very small, so they are suitable for solo travelers and couples. If you’re seeking something more spacious, the suites are some of the finest in the city (with price tags to match). And the restaurant, Kingi, is also excellent.

Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbor

Located between the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter, the Sofitel has long been a go-to for celebrities and diplomats visiting New Zealand. It boasts the high standards that you would expect from the French hotel brand, with a fine-dining restaurant, elegant interiors, and an impressive spa and wellness center.

Restaurants

For a fun atmosphere and Italian-inspired fare, head to Bivacco in the Viaduct. The menu has sharable classics like pizza, antipasto, pasta, and oysters, and on any given day, you’ll find yourself surrounded by well-heeled locals socializing over bottles of rosé and cocktails.

Soul is a restaurant that has stood the test of time, and for over 20 years, it has been a go-to venue for some of the city’s most stylish soirees. Like Bivacco, it’s also a lively spot in the heart of the Viaduct, where people go for the food as well as the scene. After dinner, there’s a dance floor that attracts a mature crowd, and on the menus, you’ll find fresh seafood and bistro classics alongside an extensive wine and Champagne list.

While it’s not the newest or the sceniest place, Prego has been a solid option along Ponsonby Road for years and is just as popular with families as it is for birthday celebrations and dinners preceding big nights out at the bars along the strip. Go for the pizza or the chicken saltimbocca — everything on the menu is great as are the cocktails. And, it's always a reliable destination for a good atmosphere and delicious food.

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Known locally as Te Papa , the country’s largest museum is essential on any Wellington itinerary. It contains over 800,000 artworks and objects, and it has a rotation of exhibitions, including dinosaur skeletons and ancient artifacts that you would expect to find at the American Museum of Natural History. It’s an interesting experience for children and adults alike.

Ride the Wellington Cable Car

For panoramic views of the city, jump on the historic Wellington Cable Car , which boards in the heart of the Lambton Quay shopping district and travels up the hillside of Kelburn. Here you will find a scenic lookout, botanic gardens, and the Cable Car Museum .

Wander Hannahs Laneway

Also known as Leeds Street, Hannah’s Laneway is a foodie’s paradise, lined with street food vendors, contemporary art, and cool cafes. You can pick up a variety of distinctly "Kiwi" specialties, from black forest toast to pies and creamy hot chocolates. Just be sure to skip breakfast so you have room to sample everything.

QT Wellington

This centrally located hotel could be equated to the likes of The Standard and Edition Hotels, with quirky, ultramodern design and a lively food and beverage scene.  It’s right across from the Te Papa Museum in the center of town and is popular with both business and leisure travelers. There are 65 hotel rooms with either city or harbor views, and it also has 98 apartments.

Wharekauhau Country Estate

Although it’s a 90-minute drive from Wellington, this luxury lodge is a popular stop on any Wellington itinerary. It’s set on a 5,000-acre estate overlooking the coast and has welcomed royals and many international diplomats visiting the capital. Everything is designed so that you don’t need to leave: food is included and sourced from the farm, it has a spa and fitness center, and a variety of outdoor activities from ATV quad biking to tennis.

You will need to book a month in advance to secure a table at this intimate prix-fixe restaurant. The menu is seasonal, and it changes every day, so there’s always something new. A typical night might feature lamb manti, panfried snapper, and crisp meringue — delicious renditions of local New Zealand cuisine.

Located on the nightlife-centric Cuba Street, Loretta is a place to enjoy crowd-pleasing classics in a fun environment.  It’s renowned for its sourdough pizzas and vanilla cheesecakes and is a great place to go with friends before a night out or for brunch on a Sunday.

Ortega Fish Shack

This nautical-themed restaurant serves some of the best seafood around, from Yellowtail Kingfish ceviche to smoked Moki rillettes and green-lipped mussels. It’s a charming and eclectic place that perfectly represents Wellington's hip, creative vibe.

Sculptureum

Sculptureum is a lovely and cultured place to spend an afternoon, with six art galleries, three sculpture gardens, a vineyard, and a restaurant appropriately named Rothko. Whether you’re staying in the area or doing a day trip up from Auckland, it’s an essential for contemporary art lovers and is especially great to visit in the summer months.

Matakana Village Farmers Market

Every weekend, Matakana Village comes alive with rustic markets featuring a variety of artisan food stands and fresh local produce. You’ll find delicious local cheese, honey, baked goods, chocolate, and award-winning flat whites.  It’s set up right next to the boutiques in the charming village, where you’ll find everything from quaint homeware stores to shoe shops, and there’s also a cinema and a restaurant within the main village complex.

Omaha Beach

The Rodney District has some of the most stunning beaches on the North Island, and one of the most popular among them is Omaha — a white sand beach that attracts swimmers, surfers, and families setting up for the day. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Matakana Village, and it has ample parking, a café, a boutique with swim essentials, and a playground. For bigger waves, surfers head to Tawharanui Beach , which is also located within the Matakana region.

Takatu Lodge

This gorgeous boutique lodge is located on a serene hilltop overlooking the Hauraki Gulf. It has only four suites with luxurious furnishings, underfloor heating, and views overlooking the gardens and the vineyards. Meals are provided in the dining spaces and tailored to guests’ preferences. Also, picnics are on offer for those wanting to set up at the nearby beaches for the day.

Courtesy of Brick Bay

Brick Bay is a similar concept to Sculptureum, with a restaurant, wine tastings, and a contemporary sculpture trail positioned around a pond and throughout a native bush. It’s been around for a long time and is very popular with both locals and Aucklanders, so it’s worth booking in advance, even if it’s just to sample their wine varietals over a cheese platter after the lunchtime rush.

Cruise the Islands

The Bay of Islands has 144 subtropical islands, and there are many ways to explore them, be it by chartering a yacht, going on a scheduled group boat tour, hiring a kayak, or embarking on a snorkeling expedition. You can see an abundance of enchanting sea life, too, including dolphins, penguins, and whales.

Visit the Waitangi Treaty grounds

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand’s most important historic site. It is where the country’s founding document was signed in 1840. Today, it contains two museums with interactive displays, guided tours to learn about the country’s history, and traditional Maori cultural performances that are staged in the meeting house.

Kauri Cliffs

Kauri Cliffs was recently added to the Rosewood portfolio, which is a testament to its high standards. It’s one of New Zealand’s most iconic luxury lodges, with a golf course that is ranked 37th on Golf Digest ’s Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in the World, an excellent restaurant, and a fabulous spa nestled into a tranquil forest full of native birdlife.

Eagle’s Nest

Positioned on a private 75-acre peninsula overlooking the Bay of Islands, Eagle’s Nest is one of New Zealand’s most luxurious boutique retreats. It is an intimate enclave, with only five villas that are beautifully designed. One thing to note is that there is no restaurant, however breakfast provisions are provided and there are on-call chefs available for private dining.

Duke of Marlborough

The Duke of Marlborough is New Zealand’s first pub, and since opening in 1827 (before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed nearby), it has undergone various reincarnations. Visit today, and you’ll find a refined version of a classic pub with décor that feels fresh while honoring its history. Menus feature locally sourced, seasonal fare with popular items like paua risotto, clam fritters, pork belly, and of course, a solid burger.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

South Island

The South Island is renowned for its spectacular natural scenery from the golden beaches of the Abel Tasman to the fiords and mountains in the Southern Alps. The vibe is generally more casual, and it’s where many of the country’s best adventure activities can be experienced. In Wanaka and Queenstown , you’ll find pristine ski slopes, dramatic mountain landscapes, and an array of sprawling wineries. It’s also home to many of New Zealand’s Great Walks and multi-day hikes. There are many beautiful places to explore, and as Sarah Handley, Tourism New Zealand's general manager for the Americas and Europe, notes, “New Zealand's connection to the U.S. has never been stronger, and Americans can now fly non-stop to Christchurch, in the South Island, with United's direct service from SFO.”

Americans can now fly non-stop to Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island, with United Airlines' direct service from San Francisco (SFO) starting Dec. 8.

Over the Top Helicopter Tour

For a true bucket list experience, take a helicopter ride and tour through the Southern Alps and the Milford Sound.  It’s the most magical way to see everything and experience areas that are usually inaccessible, like the secluded Madagascar Beach and snow-capped, sky-high peaks. The "eurocopters" are state-of-the-art, with maximum visibility from any vantage point.  They can be booked privately or as part of scheduled group tours.

TSS Earnslaw Cruise

Renowned as "the Lady of the Lake," the Earnslaw is a 110-year-old steamboat that tours Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown down to Glenorchy. It’s one of the best ways to observe the natural grandeur of the Remarkables and Cecil Peak and is a particularly popular activity for families. The cruise itself takes 90 minutes, but there are various experiences that can be added on arrival at Walter Peak High Country Farm, including horse treks, cycling, or barbecues.

Arrowtown is a historic gold-mining town that looks like a village out of a fairy tale. Everything has been lovingly preserved, and it is lined with quaint artisan boutiques, galleries, cafes, and restaurants. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Queenstown, and on the way, you could stop at Millbrook Resort for a round of golf or a spa session (just outside of the main village). Be sure to stop at The Remarkable Sweet Shop for the crème brulee fudge.

Eichardt’s Private Hotel

Eichardt’s is an iconic Queenstown establishment and one of the most beloved boutique hotels in the country. It has an exceptional cocktail bar, restaurant, and spa, along with a $20,000-per-night penthouse located above the Louis Vuitton boutique next door. The location could not be better, positioned right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in the center of the action. Inside the rooms, the interiors are ultra-luxurious and suited to the alpine theme of the town — think crackling fireplaces, marble bathrooms with underfloor heating, and plush beds with fur throws.

Matakauri Lodge

Matakauri Lodge is another property that was recently added to Rosewood’s portfolio (along with Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay) and is a key destination on New Zealand’s luxury circuit, hosting the British royal family and many celebrities over the years. The intimate lakeside retreat has only 13 spacious accommodations, and it boasts stunning views of the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu. Cocktail hour is a social affair, and the food and wine offerings are world-class.

The Carlin is new, but it’s already garnered international acclaim, winning Best New Hotel at the Boutique Hotel Awards in 2022. It’s a place that would have the "Palace" distinction if it were in France, with ultra-luxe amenities that surpass the typical five-star standard. Guests have access to private jets and Michelin-star dining, and it is home to the largest penthouse in the Southern Hemisphere.

Located just a 15-minute drive from the city center, Amisfield is the most popular winery and restaurant in the region and is an essential daytime excursion. Wine tastings are available, and there are excellent Pinot Noirs produced on site. But to make the most of it, do an al fresco lunch in the beautifully manicured courtyard and take in the views of the postcard-worthy mountains.

Botswana Butchery

This lively lakefront bistro is one to book in advance, particularly if you’re visiting on a weekend. It has a charming atmosphere and some of the best representations of hearty New Zealand cuisine sourced from the surrounding farms and waters. It also has an excellent wine list with varietals from vineyards in the area.

You will need to time your visit to Fergburger well, as the lines can often exceed an hour in the evenings, but it has the best burgers in Queenstown (and anywhere, really) and is worth factoring in. There is a long menu of options to suit everyone including vegetarian options, beef, lamb, pork, fish, chicken, and also breakfast burgers. The same operators also opened Fergbaker next door, where you can pick up a classic meat pie — both delicious options, especially on a cold and snowy day.

Blanket Bay

Glenorchy is very remote, and what to do, where to stay, and where to dine all fall under the same category if you want to do it well. The place to go? Blanket Bay, where apocalypse-weary billionaires are known to escape. It is one of the country’s finest luxury lodges and is the best way to experience all the area has to offer, with an excellent restaurant, bar, spa, wellness center, and a variety of outdoor activities, from horse riding to heliskiing and jet boating. Accommodations are split between rooms in the main house and luxuriously decorated standalone villas.

Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve

Located in the Mt. Cook National Park, the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve has some of the clearest and darkest skies for star-spotting. It was the first Dark Sky Reserve to be established in New Zealand and is a magical way to experience the country’s untouched natural beauty by night.

Explore the City’s Art Galleries

Christchurch has a thriving art scene and many galleries in the central city that are worth checking out. The main ones to prioritize are the Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCa) , Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu , and the Christchurch Art Centre .

The Mayfair

Since opening in 2022, The Mayfair has been a welcome addition to the city’s luxury hotel scene. It’s a boutique hotel with minimal, contemporary décor, and sophisticated dining options, from high tea to an all-day café and cocktail bar and bistro. The central location makes it popular for both leisure and business travelers.

The Observatory Hotel

The Observatory is a chic, design-forward boutique hotel that also opened in Christchurch in 2022.  It has rich interiors give the sense of eternal night, with vivid colors and ambient lighting. Rooms are very photogenic, and there are multiple dining options from the Drawing Room to all-day eatery Bunsen, and more casual options within the broader complex, from food trucks to sushi and dumplings.

Inati is a stylish fine-dining establishment helmed by the former head chef of Gordon Ramsay’s The Warrington. If there’s one place to book in advance in Christchurch, this is it. The menu is filled with sharing plates and divided into earth, land, and sea categories. Guests can park up at elegant stools overlooking the open kitchen and observe their food being artfully crafted.

If you want to experience the great outdoors (which is the primary drawcard), the best time to visit is over the summer, between December and the beginning of April. During this period, temperatures are balmy, and you’re more likely to encounter solid blocks of sunshine. It’s also when the cities come alive, with many music festivals and cultural events, and is the best time to explore the beaches, wineries, and stunning walking tracks. That said, New Zealand is a great place to visit year-round, and it is also a world-renowned ski destination with ski resorts throughout the North and South Island. If you’re looking to ski, the months to consider would be between June and October, when the fields are open.

Fiona Goodall/Getty Images

The best way to get to New Zealand is to fly into Auckland Airport, which is the country’s primary gateway. Air New Zealand has multiple routes available, including a direct flight from New York City, which takes 17 hours but is surprisingly manageable, given it flies overnight (and the airline is renowned for its excellent cuisine and high standard overall). United Airlines also has a direct flight from San Francisco's SFO, and Qantas also has a route from New York to Auckland.

Once you arrive at the airport, there are taxis and rideshare services available, including Uber, but given everything is quite spread out, it is definitely worth renting a car. That will allow you to easily explore all of the different areas (some of which don’t have regular public transport options available). Driving is also a great way to visit some of the more remote beaches and destinations off the beaten path. If you’re planning on staying in the city centers, there are buses available, trains (albeit with limited routes), and ferries.

Later, dine at the Devonport Bayside Village area with loads of cafes and pubs.

Day #2 Waitomo & Matamata

Pick up the rental car you reserved from the downtown Auckland Hertz.

Road trip for 2.5 hours through green rolling hills covered in sheep to the Waitomo Caves .

Reserve the combination 2 hour tour of the Ruakuri Cave and the Glowworm Cave . $89 per person. Not cheap, but completely worth it!

You are guided through folding shawls of limestone formations and crystal tapestries. It’s quite magical.

Enjoy the special Cathedral Cave which feels like a giant Gaudi church dripping with limestone. You may even hear your guide sing an ancient Mãori folk song!

What to know about Glowworms

Glow worms live in these vast caves filled with stalagmites and stalactites. Part 2 of the tour takes you through an adjacent cave with water pathways. In the pitch-black bottom of the cave, you climb into a boat.

The guide, a Mãori descendent of the chief who originally explored the caves, stands in the boat and pushes off the sides of the cave to keep the boat moving through.

In complete silence, you are surrounded by ceilings and walls of glowworms.

Stay the night in Waitomo. The haunted, old Waitomo Hotel we stayed at has closed, last I heard, so find some options below.

→ Book a hotel in Waitomo here!

Road Trip to Matamata

You can eat at a local spot before driving just over an hour to Matamata.

Stop in at the Otorohanga Kiwi House along the way to catch a glimpse of the famous Kiwi Bird.

Kiwi are nocturnal, so their habitat is indoors and in the dark. Not easy to see, but you can say you saw a Kiwi bird!

Spend the night at one of the many choices for lodging in Matamata, near Hobbiton .

→ Book a hotel in Matamata here!

Day #3 Hobbiton & Rotorua

Have your Hobbiton reservation scheduled for the morning. You’ll park in the Visitors Center Lot and will be picked up by bus and taken to Hobbiton.

The Hobbiton Tour  is totally worth it. You’ll want to reserve and purchase your tickets in advance. You can use the Hobbiton website directly, or here . It’s very popular!

You’ll run on the paths, enter a Hobbit Hole, take photos by the party tree, drink beer at the Green Dragon, and hear all the marvelous stories of how the films were made.

It’s a total tourist trap and we loved it!

→ Book a walking tour in the Shire here!

Is Zorbing worth it?

Next, you have a one hour drive to the original Zorbing site, called ZORB Rotorua .

OK, maybe a ridiculous amount of money for such a silly thing ($40 per person for a single ride with discounts for multiple rides.)

However, I guarantee you have never laughed this hard in your life!

Jump into a giant ball with splashing water and roll down a hill, spinning and tossing around for a few minutes.

The whole adventure lasts about 30 minutes. And then you get to sit in a hot tub for as long as you like!

Rotorua – the home of Manaakitia

Manaakitia  means hospitality, and that is what you’ll find here.

Rotorua is one of the most memorable and wonderful spots in NZ! Plan on two nights there because there is so much to do.

Be prepared for the odor of this city. You may find it a little offensive.

Sulfur permeates the air because the city is built on bubbling mud pools and geothermal activity.

Everywhere you go, find another bubbling spot, emerging from the earth, reminding you that the land is active, and alive.

Rotorua is steeped deeply in ancient and current Mãori culture. You’ll get a feel for how nurturing of each other, and of the land, the people are.

The Sudima Hotel – Stay here for 2 nights on the banks of Lake Rotorua. There is an onsite restaurant and its next to the Polynesian Spa. Prices start at $82 p/night.

The steaming Lake Rotorua is difficult to describe because the activity, color, and atmosphere create a haunting, while also calming, experience.

On your first evening, get reservations at the Polynesian Spa , across the street from the hotel. Soak in a private outdoor tub of natural hot springs, in the dark, sipping water, and relaxing overlooking the lake. Healing and decadent.

Day #4 Explore Rotorua

Tour the Whakarewarewa Village , a living Mãori Village.  The village tour is an absolute MUST SEE. The Tuhourangi-Ngati Wahiao people have lived and worked in this village for centuries.

The town is built surrounding the mud pools and boiling mineral springs, right next to the erupting geyser.

We ate corn cooked in the geothermal community cooking pool and saw traditional dance, singing, and of course, the “almighty HAKA.” BIG highlight of the trip.

View the Pohutu and Prince of Wales Geysers , two of New Zealand’s most famous and active geysers!

Visit the Agrodome Farm

Just 10 minutes from Rotorua center is Agrodome Farm. It’s a 350 acre working sheep farm.

Watch the sheep performance, visit the alpacas and cows, and of course, the café!

Buy sheep and possum yarn and head back to town for dinner and bed.

Day #5 Head to the South Island – Queenstown

Drop the car off at the Rotorua Airport and fly ( we connected through Wellington) to Queenstown on the South Island where you will pick up another car at the airport at Hertz .

Stay at the Rydges Lakeland Resort , right on the bank of the lake, with a balcony in the room and free parking! Time for lunch in the very charming town with a little wild west, meets outdoor activity hub.

→ Book the exciting Shotover River Jet

Boat Ride Here!

Shotover Jet – A must do activity!

Next stop the Shotover Jet that has “thrilled over 3 million people since 1965!” These are speed boats, driven for thrill rides in the Shotover River Canyons .

The boats speed up to 85kph in as little as 10cm of water. The highly trained drivers do 360 degree turns, nearly crash into cliff sides, and completely take your breath away, in a good way!

It’s not cheap but it’s an authentic New Zealand adventure not to be missed!

Kawarua Bridge – The OG Bungy Jump Bridge

Queenstown is also the home of the famous skydiving trips and the original bungy jumping bridge.

The Kawarua Bridge is the world’s first commercial bungy jumping site, established in 1988.

The lodge is booming with people, loud music, and a ski resort vibe.

There are no waivers to sign, no high tech devices, no big fanfare, just people diving off a 141 foot bridge and bouncing up and down until they get scooped up by in a boat below.

You can zipline and bungy jump if skydiving is not your thing!

Back in town, dine at the famous Fergburger, where you wait in line for an hour to get any kind of New Zealand beef, lamb, pork, fish, chicken, or steak burger, or a falafel pattie named Bun Laden on a gluten free bun!

Day #6 Milford Sound – A World Heritage Site

Plan your  Milford Sound Tour  in advance. The bus will pick you up in town and take you on the four hour bus ride from Queenstown through a rain forest. The bus stops in a quaint town for snacks and bathroom breaks and again in the forest to introduce you to the rare Kea birds.

The Kea Bird , a nationally endangered species, is of the parrot family and lives only in this alpine, rain forest, region on the South Island. One bird will distract the human while the other one steals the human’s food!

→ Book a Queenstown to Milford Sound

Coach Tour with lunch included NOW!

The Milford Sound Cruise

In Milford Sound, board a boat cruise through the fjords.

Milford Sound is a World Heritage site, known for its spectacular waterfalls and breathtaking scenery.

Sitting inside the very large dining cabin with tables and chairs is warm and dry, but also a bit wavy.

Standing outside is gorgeous and fun, but also intense because of wind and water!

I promise you will take a great nap on the busride back to Queenstown.

Day #7 Is Wanaka worth going to?

Drive one hour to Wanaka . Stay at the charming, yet funky, Wanaka Hotel .

Explore the lake in search of the famous Wanaka Tree , “The Lone Tree of Lake Wanaka.” You’ll find the backdrop of the Mount Aspiring National Park picture perfect.

After relaxing by the beach, head  to the Cinema Paradiso!

It is a classic and tiny old theater, filled with cozy couches and chairs, and even an antique Morris Minor car!

They serve food and freshly baked cookies, drinks, and homemade ice cream. This place is a New Zealand treasure. Definitely go!

Day #8 Hike the Minaret Burn Track

Venture out to the Minaret Burn Track along the western shore of Lake Wanaka .

Its a 12 mile out and back trail, well groomed by a cattle flat. parking at the head of the trail is easy. Go as far as you like before heading back to your car.

This is a lovely and picturesque hike with beautiful views of the mountains and lots of cows!

The Wanaka Lavender Farm

Afterwards, stop at the Wanaka Lavender Farm. A few minutes outside of Wanaka is a 20 acre lavendder and honey farm

A sweet café serves you lavender tea and lavender cookies. And talk about photo ops!

Drive the 3 hours to Dunedin at the tip of the South Island.

Dunedin is a university city, on the Pacific Ocean, with plenty of lodging and dining choices.

Day #9 Dunedin – The Southern Tip

Dunedin is the city on the Otago Harbor. It is a big university town with a lot of Scottish and Maori heritage.

Dunedin is known for its majestic coastline and being the home of the rare yellow eyed penguins!

Wander through the tunnels, rocks and cliffs at Tunnel Beach

Be sure to climb Baldwin Street , New Zealand claims it is the steepest street in the world!

Visit the Dunedin Public Art Gallery for its beautiful collection of New Zealand historic artifacts and famous Maori portrait paintings by Gottfried Lindauer.

Day #10 Travel Day

Time to pack up and return the car at the Dunedin Airport . Fly back to the Auckland Airport , on the North Island , and head back home. You’ll have plenty of time to look at your photos on the plane! Enjoy!

What is the best month to visit New Zealand?

My advice has to do with airline ticket prices and time of year.

The Longest Day in New Zealand is December 22. It’s a beautiful summer during the winter solstice. However, the ticket prices in December double!

Spend 10 days in New Zealand in November , just BEFORE the longest day in New Zealand! While November is still a bit damp and chilly, there can be plenty of nice weather and no crowds.

Feel free to experience the longest day in New Zealand on the gorgeous beaches, but for half the price, November weather is great!

How much does a trip to New Zealand cost?

New Zealand is overall relatively inexpensive when it comes to food, lodging, and domestic transportation.

The pricy parts of the trip are the activities/excursions. While there are plenty of free things to do, New Zealand is all about adventure, and adventures cost money.

Reserve ahead, look for discounts, and pay in the months and weeks before you go to spread out the expenses.

How to travel around New Zealand

This 10 day itinerary in New Zealand recommends:

~ Flying in and out of Auckland on the North Island.

~ Renting a car in Auckland for the North Island excursions.

~ Flying to the South Island from Rotorua to Queenstown.

~ Renting a car in Queenstown for the South Island excursions (excpet for the tour bus to Milford Sound)

~ Flying back to Auckland from Dunedin.

→ Rent cars from Hertz

In New Zealand you will  drive on the Right side of the car, but Left side of the road .

Just like in the UK. If you aren’t used to this, don’t freak out. You can do it! Once you get the hang of where the blinkers are vs the windshield wipers, you’re good to go!

The roads are simple to navigate and practically empty. Really, there is so little traffic there!

Important New Zealand Travel Advice

~ What to pack? For 10 days in New Zealand, all you need are exercise leggings, hiking shoes, jacket layers for rain, and a bathing suit. It’s a casual country and you will be active and outdoors most of the time.

~ Pay now, Play later! Make as many reservations as you can prior to your trip.  A NZ adventure has a lot of moving parts so you’ll want to be organized.

~ Pay close attention to this itinerary because you can reserve the cars, plane tickets, lodgings, and excursions all in advance. That way, you will only need to find food, which is super easy and delicious in NZ!

~ Check the exchange rate for the New Zealand dollar. Currently the US .61 = $1 NZ

These are a couple of things that I was not able to fit into my 10 Day itinerary and really want to return to do on the next trip!

New Zealand Bucket List Add Ons:

~ Abel Tasman National Park – wilderness at the north end of the Sount Island. Hike the famous Able Tasman Coast Track Trail and see blue penguins, bottlenose dolphons, and seals.

~ The Franz Josef Glacier Hike – this is a 12-km  glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of the South Island.

Now you are ready for your 10 Days in New Zealand!

In a nutshell…

New Zealand is probably one of the most memorable places I’ve ever been. Its beauty, people, and culture are so unique to that country and unlike anywhere else in the world.

Pack your bags, use this itinerary, and enjoy the trip of a lifetime!

Spend 10 days in New Zealand to see a lot of what this special country has to offer. It's truly a spectacular place, with magnificent sites, delicious food, and VERY friendly Kiwis!
