12 Best Places To Visit In Malaysia In 3 Days

Note that when thinking about what to see in Malaysia for 3 days, I don’t recommend that you change cities. It’s a short time period so to maximise your time, stick to just one place in Malaysia and explore from there.

The easiest way to get here is by private taxi. These can pick you up anywhere in Singapore and drop you anywhere in Malaysia including Legoland or Johor Bahru. This city offers visitors several attractions including a mix of museums, theme parks and natural landmarks like the Gunung Ledang National Park and Gunung Lambak, and there’s plenty to do during your 3 day 2 night trip to Malaysia. Day 2: Today is all about Legoland Malaysia. Buy discounted tickets here.

6. Taman Negara

The gorgeous scenery on the way to Lata Berkoh Taman Negara

If you’re based in KL and want to escape to the jungle for a few days, or have time for a 2 days trip in Malaysia from KL, then Taman Negara National Park holds the title as Malaysia’s largest national park and is easy to visit from Kuala Lumpur. It’s truly a nature lover’s paradise!

There are a huge amount of plants and animals in this 130 million year old rainforest and plenty of short and long hikes.

Taman Negara 3 Day itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Taman Negara first thing. Take a bus to Jerantut and then another to the jetty at Kuala Tembling. Then take a boat to the main entrance of the park at Kuala Tahan. best stay in Penang at Georgetown

Penang is our personal favourite spot in Malaysia and a great location for a 3 day break or for a Malaysia 4 days 3 nights itinerary if you have an extra day. It has great variety and you can spend the morning exploring the UNESCO World Heritage listed centre of George Town and then relax for the afternoon on the beach.

There’s an interesting multicultural mix of influences, interesting architecture and affordable resort style accommodation. It’s also one of the best places in Malaysia (perhaps the world) to eat, offering some of the best food for great prices, so an all round great getaway whether its architecture, history, food, beaches or island life that appeals to you.

Penang is perfect for anyone looking for a variety of things to do in a beautiful setting while eating top class food!

We can book you a private transfer to Mersing, for your ferry to Tioman, from anywhere in Singapore.

This island is surrounded by coral reefs which make it the perfect destination for people who love scuba diving or snorkelling. It is also great for hiking.

When I was based in Kuala Lumpur (living with friends in an Airbnb Condo), I went on plenty of weekend getaways, so that’s why I wanted to put this post together for what I think are some of the best places for a short getaway in Malaysia!

1) Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur - Places to visit in Malaysia in 3 Days

Starting off the list I’ve put Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, as it’s truly a wondrous city that has so much to offer, and while it may be the main gateway for exploring the country, it is 100% worth a 3-day visit on its own! It’s one of my personal favorite cities in Southeast-Asia and I actually based myself there during my days as a long-term traveler!

The city is completely vibrant, and there seems to be something new around every corner to explore! While the weather may be hot and steamy (like the majority of country), the cuisine is delicious, the locals are incredibly friendly, and it’s one of the world’s best destinations for shopping!

It’s got a fantastic cosmopolitan vibe, but with affordable prices, and it’s no wonder why more and more international ex-pats are flocking to this wonderful city to embrace the epic lifestyle it has to offer!

KL - places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days

You can pretty much always find cheap flights here (thanks to AirAsia being based at KLIA), getting around the city is incredibly easy thanks to KL’s clean and affordable metro system, and there’s also an abundance of amazing Airbnbs in Kuala Lumpur  for a comfortable stay and a rooftop infinity pool swim! So without further ado, here’s my quick breakdown of Kuala Lumpur in 3 days!

Things to do in Kuala Lumpur in 3 Days

  • Take the metro out to the Batu Caves, walk up it’s colorful steps, and marvel at the beautiful Hindu Temples & massive statues! But please be careful of the monkeys! They’re quite infamous for being a bit meaner than the average monkey!
  • Head down to KLCC and visit the world’s highest twin towers and book tickets to walk along the Skybridge Petronas Twin Towers! They’re truly magnificent, and I’d actually recommend heading there once during the day, and then once at night to see them all lit up!
  • Spend some time shopping in China Town, especially along the iconic Petaling Street Market. It’s a bustling area with lots to offer like cheap souvenirs, delicious food, and an awesome atmosphere!
  • Soak up some culture at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in the city, dating back to 1873.

Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur - places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days

  • Visit the colorful shops in Little India for textiles, jewelry, and plenty of low-key restaurants serving up amazing Indian curries!
  • Grab some cocktails and watch the sunset at the Heli Lounge Bar Kuala Lumpur . It’s an old helipad that’s been transformed to a bar and offers one of the best views in the city!
  • Have dinner in the buzzing Jalan Alor Food market at night for some local Malaysian food and incredible ambiance!
  • Check out the nightly FREE Symphony Lake Water Show at KLCC!
  • Book tickets to visit the top of the iconic Menara Kuala Lumpur Tower for unbelievable panoramic views of the city!
  • Try the iconic Malaysian dish Nasi Kandar, meaning ‘mixed rice’, which is a favorite among locals & travelers!
  • If you’re a backpacker or looking for a fun place to grab a drink, check out the Reggae Mansion Rooftop parties!
  • Finally, take a swim in one of the city’s iconic rooftop infinity pools like at the Regalia Condominium!

Kuala Lumpur - places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days

Best Places to Stay in Kuala Lumpur for 3 Days

While there are certainly countless of amazing hostels, hotels, and luxury resorts found in Kuala Lumpur, I ALWAYS recommend people to book one of the hundreds of Airbnb’s at the Regalia Condominium. This is complex where I lived when I was based in KL, and I really do miss it every day! It’s centrally located /walking distance to two different metro lines, has a great mall right next to it, and all the apartments are modern and comfortable. But most importantly – it has one of the MOST EPIC infinity pools in the world that you must experience!

Kuala Lumpur - Best Places To Visit in Malaysia in 3 Days

In recent year’s it has become quite popular in the Airbnb community, so checking-in/ checking-out is super easy, and there’s a mini-market on the main floor for essentials like water, coconuts, basic food, beer, and lots more!

It’s also really easy to order transportation, as all the rideshare drivers (like GRAB ) know it’s popular, so you’ll rarely have to wait more than a few minutes to get picked up, and there’s an easy pick-up area on the main floor. While you can definitely find a ton of different amazing properties, here are a few of my main picks:

  • Float in the Infinity Pool of a Gorgeous Apartment
  • Spectacular Skyline views from a Chic, High Rise Apartment

Airbnb Kuala Lumpur - places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days

There really are tons of different Airbnb’s in the Regalia condominium, so even if all three of these don’t have availability, you’ll be able to find one! It’s truly a MUST-VISIT for any 3-day visit to Kuala Lumpur, and I know you’ll love it as much as I do!

Kuala Lumpur - Best Places To Visit in Malaysia in 3 Days (2020)

Where to go in Malaysia for a short trip? Well, I’d argue that Penang might be the best answer to that question!

“If there’s a more thrilling cocktail of eastern cultures than Penang, we’ve yet to find it. Penang has long served as the link between Asia’s great kingdoms and an important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East.

Penang is one of the most unique destinations in Malaysia, and definitely has a little something for everyone! While it may be known as one of the main cultural hotspots in the country, that comes second to Penang’s claim to serving up the best food Malaysia has to offer!

While walking around the UNESCO Heritage Zone of George Town, you’ll simply fall in love with its colorful streets, unique street art, and lively atmosphere! But if you’re looking for a beach getaway, then Penang would still be a fantastic choice, as there are tons of incredible beaches in Penang!

Planning a Malaysia weekend getaway to Penang would be the perfect amount of time to explore and fall in love with this Malaysian gem, and getting here is super easy as it has it’s own international airport on the southern tip of the island!

  • Explore Penang at Night ! From unique bars to late night bites, Penang has a lively night scene that you’ll absolutely love!
  • Book a George Town Food Hop & Heritage Tour for a deeper understanding of this city’s relationship with food! “ Penang is a gallery full of stories told through its dishes and shared with you on this tour. After all, there’s more to food than just the taste.”
  • Spend an afternoon walking around George Town and admire all of the amazing street artwork! They’re all over the place, but you can browse through this article on the 25 Most Captivating Murals In Georgetown  for lots of fun photos! But it might be better to leave them as a surprise during your visit!
  • Take the tram up to the top of Penang Hill which offers stunning views of the city and surrounding area!
  • Get lost in the jungle and spend some time hiking through Penang National Park ! There are loads of different trails and routes, and each of them will bring you to a different gorgeous beach, lake, or attraction. My main piece of advice would hike to Monkey Beach ! It’s really beautiful, and the walk is quite pleasant!
  • Enjoy a beach day on the iconic Batu Ferringhi Beach! There are tons of awesome hotels and luxury beach resorts there, so the entire area is quite popular and has lots to offer!
  • For the adventure seekers, you can go parasailing or rent a jet ski (which I’d highly recommend doing during the sunset!)
  • Brush up on some history while walking through Fort Cornwallis , which was built by the British East India Company in the late 18th century, and is the largest standing fort in Malaysia! It’s free to enter, and definitely worth the visit!

Three days really is the ideal amount of time to visit Penang, and you have two main options for where to stay, in the cultural food hotspot of George Town , or by the main beach resort area of  Batu Ferringhi!   So it really just depends on what you’d prefer to be closer to! Here are a few of my top picks though, so take a look and see what you like most!

  • SkyHome Two@ Studio 30 Seaview 218 Macalister : This budget-friendly studio-apartment Airbnb is located right smack dab in the center of George Town, just minutes away from some of the city’s most popular attractions. It’s a Superhost property and has outstanding reviews, but it is also a fantastic deal that even most backpackers would be able to afford this place! You’ll want to book this property well in advance though, as it’s quite popular! The condominium is also equipped with an amazing infinity pool which can be crucial to escaping the Malaysian heat!
  • Ryokan Muntri Boutique Hostel : If you’re a solo traveler on a tight budget, then look no further and book a bed here! I’ve personally stayed here and definitely think it’s the best hostel in Penang! It has a really awesome backpacker atmosphere, perfectly located in George Town, and has over a thousand glowing reviews from fellow travelers!
  • Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La : Want to experience a bit of luxury at a fraction of the cost!? You’ve probably heard of Shangri-La before, and their property in Penang is absolutely stunning! Complete with three outdoor pools, a mini water park with slide and a whirlpool, and  beautifully landscaped grounds, it’s no wonder that the  Golden Sands Resort Penang  is one of the top picks on the island! It’s a beachfront accommodation that’s also walking distance to  Batu Ferringhi’s night market and would provide for the most comfortable 3-day vacation!

3) Langkawi

Langkawi - Malaysia Weekend Getaways

Officially known as  Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah,  this Malaysian paradise is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea (around 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia), and deserves a place on every traveler’s bucket list!

I first visited Langkawi back in 2013 while completing a visa-run from Thailand, but have since returned numerous times as I absolutely fell in love with its beauty and laidback atmosphere! While I think it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days, just be warned – it’s one of the destinations that has the power to keep you there much longer than expected! My original trip was only meant to be for a couple of days, and I ended up staying nearly two weeks!

Langkawi - Malaysia Weekend Getaways

With its unbelievably turquoise seas, gorgeous beaches, fantastic snorkeling/ scuba-diving sites, beautiful waterfalls, delicious food, and duty-free prices – Langkawi is truly a gem, and would make for a fantastic budget Malaysia weekend getaway!

There’s an excellent international airport on Langkawi making it perfect for a 3-day visit! My travel blog has covered Langkawi quite a lot, so if you decide to choose Langkawi for your upcoming holiday, be sure to read/ bookmark these posts to give you some inspiration!

Malaysia Weekend Getaways

Cenang beach, Langkawi, Malaysia

Things to do in Langkawi in 3 Days

  • Book the ICONIC Langkawi Island Hopping Boat Tour ! It only costs $8.45 U.S.D (which I’ll never really understand why they don’t charge more), and you simply can’t leave the island without visiting all the stops! It’s a half-day tour that includes snorkeling, swimming at a beautiful lake (with pleasantly warm water), and a visit to one of the best beaches in Malaysia! I’ve done this tour EVERY time I visit Langkawi, because it’s just a great way to soak up the scenery, and enjoy a day cruising through the islands in the archipelago! Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
  • Take a stroll through the charming Oriental Village and then head up to the Langkawi Cable Car & Skybridge ! This is another MUST-DO during your visit, as it’s just fun and offers AMAZING views of the island’s marvelous landscape of the entire archipelago and Southern Thailand! It’s the highest cable car in all of Malaysia, and you’ll fly through the eastern cliffs of Mt. Machinchang with the lush forests below, and arrive at the second highest peak, Mt. Machinchang!
  • If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day, then look no further than Pantai Cenang! With it’s soft-white sand and plenty of restaurants and beach bars nearby, it’s definitely THE PLACE to be in all of Langkawi.

Langkawi Sky Bridge - Places to visit in malaysia in 3 days

  • Rent a Moto or a car and explore all of the waterfalls! There are 3-4 really great ones perfect for swimming, and one even has a natural waterslide and “jacuzzi”! I’d recommend the  Seven Wells Waterfalls and Terjun Temurun!
  • Eat one or two meals at this restaurant called  Tomato, because It’s actually one of my personal favorite aspects of visiting  Langkawi! They serve some of the best and most affordable Indian food I’ve ever tried, and everyone I’ve told to go there always thanks me for the recommendation! They’ve got a pretty decent sized menu, but I always order the  Butter Chicken with some Garlic Cheese Naan!
  • Enjoy a different side of Langkawi by trying out this Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark Tour ! I’ve personally done this tour as well and definitely loved it! It’s just mesmerizing to sail through the Mangroves and admire all the beautiful limestone cliffs and diverse wildlife, as well as visit secluded coves and beaches!
  • Party it up in Pantai Cenang’s buzzing nightlife scene! There are tons of fun beach bars and a few clubs to dance at, and the backpacker atmosphere really is outstanding! I’ve spent many nights drinking tax-free booze on the beach with friends I met at hostels, and they’re some of my fondest memories of Langkawi!
  • Either book a one-night stay or “crash” the Berjaya Resort in Langkawi! It has an incredible pool with a swim-up bar, and you could easily spend all day relaxing here! Also, they’ve got their own private beach with volleyball nets, so it’s an ideal place to go with a group of friends!
  • Looking for a bit more excitement? Book this popular Langkawi Dayang Bunting Islands Jet Ski Tour for a four-hour adventure that’s guaranteed to get your heart racing! You’ll cruise through Langkawi’s Islands and crystal clear waters onboard your own fast jet ski, making several stops along the way that include hiking, kayaking, and of course lots of swimming!
  • Last, but certainly not least, check out the Langkawi Underwater World ! It’s one of the largest aquariums in Malaysia, and includes over 4,000 different aquatic species inside the park that’s almost six acres big!

10 Fun Things and Activities to do in Langkawi, Malaysia #GoPro

Best Places to Stay in Langkawi for 3 Days

Langkawi is a really large island, but there are only a couple of main areas where you’ll want to stay for a 3-day visit! My personal recommendation would be to stay along Pantai Cenang, as it’s the most populated region with the most to offer its visitors. With that being said, if you’re looking for a luxury getaway or romantic holiday, there are some truly EPIC resorts on Langkawi that would provide an unforgettable visit. Here are my top recommendations for where to stay on Langkawi:

  • The Love Shack: A Romantic Getaway : One of the most popular Airbnb’s in Langkawi! It’s a private bungalow minutes away from Pantai cenang perfect for couples looking for privacy.
  • Dash Resort Langkawi : Beautiful resort in Pantai Cenang, but tucked away from the main action!
  • Langkawi Dormitorio:  This is the BEST HOSTEL on Langawki! Excellent dorm beds at an affordable price!
  • Berjaya Resort Langkawi : I mentioned this place above, and it really is an incredible property! They even have overwater villas!
  • Four Seasons Resort Langkawi : Saving the best for last, if you’re looking for a luxurious getaway than this is where you want to stay! This 5* Resort is truly jaw-dropping, and offers a mile-long private beach, multi-tiered outdoor pools, and beautifully designed spacious villas!

4) Perhentian Islands

Pulau Perhentian - Weekend Getaways in Malaysia

Next on the list (and another one of my personal favorites), are the marvelous Perhentian Islands! Here you will find many of the country’s most idyllic beaches, incredible scuba-diving sites (shipwrecks, turtles, and colorful reefs), and a laidback paradise vibe! Some have even referred to as “Maldives of Malaysia”

The Perhentian Islands consist of two main islands: Perhentian Kecil & Perhentian Besar.  During my three visits, I’ve always chosen to stay on Perhentian KECIL, as it’s the more popular of the two for younger travelers, and also has lots more nightlife and a lively atmosphere. Perhentian BESAR (which I have visited during snorkeling trips) is more geared towards  families ,  vacationers ,  honeymooners, and those looking to book expensive resorts.

Perhentian Islands - places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days

So if you’re planning a 3-day visit to the Perhentian Islands, you’ll need to choose which island you’d like to base yourself on. I’d definitely recommend Perhentian Kecil though because there are still plenty of beautiful beach hotels/ resorts, and just has so much more to offer!

Take a read through my guide & photos for the Perhentian Islands below:

  • The Ultimate Backpacker’s Guide to the Perhentian Islands
  • The Perhentian Islands: Perfectly Picturesque [Photo Essay]

Perhentian Islands - Best Places to Visit in Malaysia

How to get to the Perhentian Islands?  Unlike the previous destinations on the list, there is no international airport, so you’ll need to book a flight to  Kota Bharu Airport OR   Kuala Terengganu Airport , and from there you can hop on a bus/ or pay for a taxi to the  Kuala Besut  jetty  which offers transfers to the islands. You can simply tell the boat drivers the accommodation you have booked, and they’ll drop you off as close they can get you.

Important Note –  The Perhentian Islands are CLOSED DURING THE MONSOON SEASON BETWEEN NOVEMBER – FEBRUARY, and the best time to visit is going to be between May-August.

Things to do in the Perhentian Islands in 3 Days

  • Book one of the many snorkeling trips offered on the island! They aren’t expensive at all, and will take you to some really awesome places where you’ll almost guarantee to swim with turtles, countless fish, stingrays, and lots more!
  • Book a Fun-Dive or Discover Scuba at one of the many dive centers! Since this only a 3-day visit, you won’t have enough time to get your PADI scuba diving certification, but if you’re already certified (which I’m sure most people who are interested in the activity will be) you’ll honestly want to do as much diving as possible!
  • Simply relax on the beach! The Perhentian Islands truly are a marvelous vacation destination, so rent a beach umbrella/ lounger, read a book, sip on a coconut, go for a swim, play some volleyball, soak up the sun, and let your stress melt away!
  • Attend one of the movie nights! A couple of the resorts/ restaurants on the island will play nightly movies for customers, so it’s a great way to spend an evening after the sun goes down. So get there early to find a good seat, order some delicious Malay cuisine, and watch whatever movie they’re playing that night!
  • Party it up at Perhentian Kecil’s nightlife scene. While there are many places you can go to grab a drink, a few of my favorites are Panorama Bar, Monkey Bar, and the Pirates of Perhentian!

Best Islands in Malaysia for a Weekend Getaway

Best Places to Stay in the Perhentian Islands for 3 Days

Now, since I like staying on Perhentian Kecil and know it well, all of these accommodation recommendations will be there!

  • Perhentian Grand Seaview Villa : Owned and operated by a Malaysian/English couple who met on The Perhentian Islands, this private secluded tree-house villa overlooking the sea would provide for a super memorable stay while being nestled in the serene jungle!
  • Bubu Resort Perhentian Island  â€“ Located right on Long Beach, Bubu Resort is definitely my favorite place to stay on the island! The rooms/ beds are super comfy, the buffet breakfast is divine, and the entire property is absolutely beautiful. I stayed there during my most recent visit, and really loved it!
  • Tropicana Inn / Tivoli Backpackers : For the backpackers/ budget-travelers reading this, this is where I’d recommend! It’s actually a combination of two different places, but they both offer dorm beds at an unbeatable price!

5) Pulau Kapas

Pulau Kapas - Best Malaysia Getaways

Want to visit one of Malaysia’s best-kept secrets?  Well, look no further than the laid back tropical hideaway,  Pulau Kapas ! So when I was based in Kuala Lumpur, all of my ex-pat friends would regularly go on a weekend getaways to Kapas Island, and told me how much they loved it! I finally got the chance to check it out for myself, and immediately fell in love with it!

While it may be the most under-developed places to visit on this list, that’s what makes it so charming! There are limited accommodation options, not that many places to eat, and honestly not much to do – but it’s simply the definition of paradise! The color (and temperature) of the water will put you into a complete state of relaxation, and the snorkeling right off the beach will blow your mind! I had never seen any reefs like that so close to my hotel! You can just wake up, pop on your snorkel, and go swim with turtles among colorful reefs within a 1-2 minute swim!

It also has an unbeatable laidback vibe, and all of the travelers who visit Kapas Island seem to be incredibly friendly! Since it’s an off-the-beaten-path destination, it attracts a really great crowd of long-term travelers/ backpackers who are looking for authentic connections and experiences.

Pulau Kapas - Best Places to Visit in Malaysia in 3 Days

How to get to Kapas Island…?  It’s pretty simple! You’ve just got to book a flight to  Kuala Terengganu Airport,  and then either take the bus/ book a taxi to the Marang Jetty.  Transfers on the speed-boat only take 15-minutes and cost around $5 U.S.D per one-way. Transfer boats leave Marang at 9.30 am, 11.30 am, 1.30 pm, and 4.30pm.

Also, be sure to BRING CASH (there are not ATM’s on the island), a flashlight for getting around at night, and don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen/ plenty of insect repellanant!

Important Note –  Pulau Kapas is also closed during the Monsoon season between November February, and the best time to visit is from April – August.

Kapas Island - Malaysia Weekend Getaways 2020

Things to do in Pulau Kapas in 3 Days

  • As mentioned above, make sure you go snorkeling right off the beach! You’ll honestly be amazed at what you can find!
  • Walk along the beach across the entire west side of the island! It won’t take you more than 20-30 minutes, and is truly jaw-dropping! They even have these golden staircases which are quite photogenic!
  • Take a half-day-trip over to the neighboring Gem Island Resort & Spa ! It’s just a short boat ride away and offers relaxing hammocks, a turtle sanctuary, a great restaurant, spa, and fantastic snorkeling (I actually saw a pretty big shark when I snorkeled there!)
  • Have a few meals at the Jetty CafĂ©, which is one of the first establishments you’ll see when dropped off at the main arrival jetty. The family who owns is are super nice, the food is cheap, and it’s quite delicious!
  • Check out Kapas Beach Chalet (KBC) for their incredible Friday night beach BBQ’s.
  • Go scuba-diving! There’s only dive-center on Kapas, so go chat with them about all the different dive sites.
  • Take a walk through the jungle to different viewpoints
  • Play Beach Volleyball with fellow travelers!
  • Enjoy the peaceful laidback setting!

Kapas Island - Best Places to Visit in malaysia

Best Places to Stay on Pulau Kapas for 3 Days

There really aren’t that many options to choose from, but here would be my top picks!

  • Kapas Beach Chalet:  You can’t book online, but it’s definitely one of the more popular establishments on the island! Great stuff, delicious food, basic yet comfortable rooms, and awesome staff!
  • For the super-budget travelers, you can rent a tent and beach camp on Kapas Island !
  • Kapas Turtle Valley Resort : Tucked away on the very far end of the island, this lovely little resort offers its own private beach, budget-friendly rooms (with breakfast included), and they also have wi-fi available! I didn’t stay there myself, but did get the chance to meet the owners who were helpful and friendly!
  • Gem Island Resort & Spa . Finally, if you’re looking for a luxurious 3-day Island getaway, then reserve a room on the neighboring Gem Island. Transfers to/from Kapas Island & Gem Island don’t take long at all, and it’ll definitely provide for the most comfortable visit.

Where to Stay on Pulau Kapas - Malaysia Weekend Getaways

6) Pulau Tioman

Tioman Island - Malaysia Weekend Getaways 2020

Another popular island destination, Pulau Tioman is famous for many beaches, wondrous dive sites (more shipwrecks, tropical rainforests, and diverse wildlife! It’s a pretty decent-sized island with lots of different areas to stay, but I’d say the most popular would be on the east coast near the Juara Turtle Project, which is a hatchery that protects and studies sea turtles!

While it may be one of the more difficult destinations in Malaysia to visit in 3 days (as there aren’t many great flight options), and the ferry from the mainland (Mersing Jetty) does take over two-hours, travelers will forget all about it once you arrive on its white sand beaches and azure waters!

Tioman - Best Places to Visit in Malaysia in 3 Days

Things to do in Pulau Tioman in 3 Days

  • Scuba-diving is a MUST on Tioman Island , as that’s probably what it is most famous for! There are dozens of colorful dive-sites, shipwreckes, and of course lots of marine life.
  • Spend a day relaxing on the famous Paya Beach!
  • Visit the Juara Turtle Project
  • Book the  Coral Island Snorkeling Trip!  This is the trip I went on during my weekend trip to Tioman, and it was incredible (even with the unfortunate weather I experienced)
  • Explore the beach bars and restaurants at Juara Beach
  • Go hiking through Tioman and find your way to Asah Waterfall
  • Play a round of golf at the Tioman Island Golf Course
  • Hike to the top of Gunung Kajang, the highest mountain on Tioman Island!

THE SNORKELING PARADISE OF MALAYSIA - Tioman Island

Best Places to Stay in Pulau Tioman for 3 Days

  • Beachfront Guest Suite by the Hill : Surrounded by pristine rainforest and beautiful nature, this lovely Airbnb hosted by a friendly local who goes above and beyond to make your visit to Tioman as memorable as possible! This property offers an amazing view of Juara Bay (which is one of my favorite areas on Tioman), and has a peaceful and private area with a river separating the property from the common beach area.
  • Japamala Resorts – By Samadhi : If you’re looking for a luxury getaway on Tioman Island than this is where you want to stay! With it’s tastefully designed rooms, top-notch services, and overall 5* ambiance, a stay here at the Japamala Resort will certainly leave an outstanding impression!
  • Cheers Chalet  â€“  For the backpackers out there reading this, Cheers Chalet is one of the cheapest options available on Tioman Island!

Tioman Island Sunset - Best Places to Visit in Malaysia

7) Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands - Best Places to Visit in Malaysia in 3 Days

Last, but certainly not least, the Cameron Highlands must be included for the best places to visit in Malaysia in 3 days! While some people may say you could visit here on a day trip from Ipoh or Kuala Lumpur, I think it requires much more time as it’s quite beautiful and there’s a lot to explore!

Roughly the size of Singapore and famous for its massive rolling hills and tea plantations, a 3-day visit to the Cameron Highlands is guaranteed to be filled with stunning scenery, invigorating tea, and wonderful hiking opportunities!

The main town in the Cameron Highlands is called Tanah Rata, and it’s filled with amazing little local eateries, fun tourist shops, and different travel agents to assist in booking day-trips to explore the area!

How to get to the Cameron Highlands?  The nearest airport is Ipoh, and easy to book a bus ticket from Ipoh to Tanah Rata , or Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata

Be sure to take a read through my guide for a bit more detail:

  • The Ultimate Backpacker’s Guide to the Cameron Highlands

Cameron highlands 2020

Things to do in the Cameron Highlands in 3 Days

  • Book one or two of the many half-day/ full-day trips! Unless you rent a car or scooter, it’s pretty impossible to see all the sights, so every tourist pretty much just books the arranged tours!  I’d recommend looking into this Cameron Highlands and Mossy Forest Half-Day Trip
  • Visit the Strawberry farms
  • Take a stroll through the iconic night market
  • Take in the fresh air and go exploring on this Gunung Jasar Mountain Trekking Tour
  • Visit as many of the tea plantations and factories as possible!
  • Have dinner at  Restoran Kumar!  It’s a small local place in Tanah Rata with cheap prices, but the food was particularly amazing!

Best Places to Stay in the Cameron Highlands for 3 Days

  • Cameron Highlands Apartment : Located just a minute’s walk from the Cameron Highlands Market, and not too far from the main area of Tanah Rata, this gorgeous one-bedroom apartment is budget-friendly, comfortable, and clean!
  • CH Traveler’s Inn : For backpackers looking for a budget-hostel dorm bed, then this is where you should stay! During my days backpacking in Malaysia, I stayed here and really enjoyed my time! It’s a bit basic, but it is affordable, centrally located, and have an awesome staff!

Malaysia for 3D / 2N Trip (DIY, Complete Itinerary, Guide and Budget)

3d2n malaysia trip

You can actually spend less than P10k for a 3 days stay at Kuala Lumpur! And this is why I was super happy even planning for my own trip.

Malaysia a Southeast Asian country occupying parts of the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo. It’s known for its beaches, rainforests and mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European cultural influences. The capital, Kuala Lumpur , is home to colonial buildings, busy shopping districts such as Bukit Bintang and skyscrapers such as the iconic, Petronas Twin Towers.

This blog is initially part of my (6D / 5N DIY Trip to Malaysia and Singapore). Three (3) days was spent in KL and another Three (3) days in Singapore.  (MNL – KL – Legoland – SG – MNL) For full itinerary of the trip you may read :   Malaysia – Singapore (DIY Trip for 6D / 5N Full Itinerary, Budget & Guide)

After series of local trips in the Philippines I decided to start ticking off my Asian Countries Travels. So why Malaysia? If people may ask. Here’s my reason that you may want to consider too :

  • For a first time international travel, you need to be extra careful with all the plannings this includes the expenses and budget. With this Malaysia Trip I managed to spent below P10,000 pesos on all expenses.
  • Unknowingly, there is much to see in Malaysia. Apart from KL there is also other cities available waiting to be visited. Just do your research on what best interest you as a traveler.
  • I wanted to go and see Legoland too! at the same time, I can cross Singapore as well in just a single trip without spending much time and resources (talk about VL credits :D)

I was with my best friend Sybil for the entire trip, and I consider this as my birthday get away at the same time, my first international trip. In this blog, I’ll be sharing everything during my trip! Did it the DIY style, because you get to do things at your own pace, at your time at your own way. It was even even cheaper and we get to ride all public transportation at the same time. Read on what could be helpful to you.

IMG20170720135739

  • Malaysian Currency is called MALAYSIAN RINGGIT (RM or MYR)   during my trip exchange rate was P1 = RM 11.10 *dated 2017
  • I exchanged my Peso in one of the money changer in Manila a week prior my trip, MYR is not usually available in malls and money changer might ask you to return after a day or two, so be ready for this too if you want a MYR money in advance
  • Do note that you can also exchange money in the airport and the exchange rate is also okay and even in KL, you’ll get a good exchange of money from PHP

LANGUAGE :

  • In Malaysia it uses English Language, though there are some locals who still struggle the language but bearable. And broken english is okay *hahaha! no one’s gonna judge you.

GOING TO MALAYSIA :

  • Direct flights are available from Manila to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • But for Manila to KL alone it was just P1,500 *you’ll get cheaper flights during PISO Fare or seat sale

TIP : when booking for seat sale, I don’t book during the first hours of the promo fare but rather wait for the next 24 hours and try to look for my trips. Most of the traveller who booked in advance have only 24 hours to settle and pay for it and chances are, it expires for some 😀 and it works as an advantage for me *wink

  • Flight to KL from Manila is 4 hours and 10 minutes all the way to Kuala Lumpur International Airport

IMG_5761

Upon exit to the airport there was different means to be at the KL Sentral. It is the center of the city and the town proper.

IMG20170720180611

  • Via Bus – which is the cheapest mode of transport (est. P110 pesos for one way) it’ll take an hour of travel time to KL Sentral
  • Via Train – fastest way is via KLIA2 Train Express. It was the most expensive means with the fare of (MYR 55 = PHP 610.50) but it will only take you 28 minutes going to KL Sentral. There was less tourist and passengers here and you get to enjoy the train.

Upon alighting at KL Sentral, you’ll see that all trains in KL are interconnected and everythings seems too busy.

*TIP : Don’t forget to download an app on your phone ahead of your trip for the Trains / MRT Stations for Malaysia. This would really come handy for DIY Trippin’

From KL Sentral Station, rode LRT Train going to Pasar Seni Station *this is where our hostel location is, I initially asked directions from the hostel management upon booking for a room.

IMG20170720184115

WHERE TO STAY IN KUALA LUMPUR :

  • do check out Agoda.com or Hostelworld.com for accommodation choices, that are cheap and you get to view and see comments and reviews from fellow traveler as well.
Also you may check out Malaysia Apartments for options on where to stay on your travel.
  • During travels I always look for affordable but comforting hostel place with FREE Breakfast as well (*so I get to save on this part)

My best friend and I stayed in Reggae Hostel Guesthouse   I booked thru Hostelworld.com got a private room for 2 for only P600 pesos per night for 2 pax already, this comes with a free breakfast and is near the MRT station. Common CR was used but it was okay.

Caretakers were nice and there is also a Filipino worker as well. The hostel also offers other rooms perfect for solo traveller, but the P300 pesos rate per night per person for a private room was indeed very affordable already.

IMG20170722075432

The hostel resides beside Chinatown for a just a short walk, which is why we get to dine and roam around at night.

Food Choices in KL were basically, curry, spices and sauces. Most of the dishes are chicken as majority of the nationals in Malaysia were Muslims.

Along Chinatown you can also do your shopping and you’ll get to buy many things as well. There is also Mcdonalds, Starbucks, Miniso, KFC and the likes along the area should you crave for it 🙂 *and it happens in real life situation :p thanks to 711 that is open for 24 hours for our late night cravings.

IMG_5762

CITY TOUR IN KUALA LUMPUR –  DAY 2

We started the day with a light breakfast from what the hostel can offer — toasted bread, jam and coffee.

Our places of itinerary was based on our own experience. We did tend to maximize everything for a day and was only dependent with the trains and LRT stations.

IMG_5766

MUZEUM NEGARA

Going there : From Pasar Seni LRT Station, alight at Muzeum Negara Station (yes it was named after it, as it is right beside the station as well) Fare : RM 2.0

Entrance Fee : RM 5 // We get to explore all rooms and parts of the museum. It talks about the culture of Malaysia.

IMG20170721105518

MASJID NEGARA

Going there : From Muzeum Negara, a long walks away from there just straight forward to see the National Mosque.

Entrance : It is free to enter the mosque but make sure to dress up properly and plan the timing of your visit accordingly as they let the visitor enters from 3PM – 4PM only. *Other time applies everyday of the week but the 3-4PM is the safest at all dates. Highlight also in this Mosque is you get to wear the traditional attire.

IMG_5789

ISLAMIC ARTS MUSEUM

Going there : From Masjid Negara, a few walks up the hill you’ll see another museum.

Entrance Fee : RM 14.95 // It was a different type of museum compared with the Muzeum Negara and it was even bigger with over 3 floors to roam and look around. They also have a resto inside but it is expensive.

IMG_2809

KL RAILWAY STATION RESTAURANT

Upon lunch time, we decided to go for Hawker Food Stall so from Islamic Arts Museum, we walked back on the other side to look for food stalls. Short walk, after asking questions we get to eat at one of the Hawker Food Stalls.

Curry and Spices were always common. We ordered a Chicken Delicacy (RM 6) and Lemon Cold Drink (RM 3.50)

IMG20170721140511

Going there : We walk all the way back to Muzeum Negara Station then LRT Train back to Pasar Seni. From Pasar Seni walk thru the pathway going to KTM (Train Terminal) and secure a ticket going to Batu Caves

Fare : RM 5 // Alight at the last station of the Train “Batu Caves” (*yes the station was named after it as well)  We failed to ride a wrong train bound to Batu Caves and it cost us additional hour to head all the way back to the right station. HAHAHAHA!!! Be conscious that the Train Terminals have various destination, and one should be keen enough to look for the signage properly and understand it at the same time. The red signage and blue signage signifies the color of the train and look at the signage of it in front. (*it was not similar with the LRT Trains)

IMG20170721151511

Railways in Malaysia was very systematic and everything is in order, everything is timely and screens are available for the specific time of the arrival of the trains. Once you missed it, you have to wait for the next schedule of it.

IMG_2946

There is no entrance fee in Batu Cave, just dress up properly as they do not allow tourist to go up the cave in shorts and mini skirts. Pashmina for rent and for sale are available on site *if in case you forget *wink

Monkeys are everywhere, they usually grab food and stuff from other tourists, so make sure you are keen also.

IMG_5771

MASJID JAMEK

Going there : From Batu Caves ride a train going to Masjid Jamek *we alight at KL Sentral and then rode another train to Masjid Jamek Station. RM 5 // Tour and Walk around. The gates were closed when we make it, due to Muslim prayers at 5PM. So it closes at 5PM everyday.

IMG_2984

MERDEKA SQUARE

Going there : From Masjid Jamek walk along the streets and see the Merdeka Square. I so love this place and it was beyond of what I expect Malaysia could be. Big structures, and nice view is a must see here.

IMG20170721191939

KL CITY GALLERY

Going there : From Merdeka Square walk along to see the famous I love KL Sign just beside the KL City Gallery.

IMG_3014

PETRONAS TWIN TOWER

Going there : From Masjid Jamek Station ride LRT bound to KLCC Station.

Fare is RM .60 // Alight at KLCC and you’ll get to walk and stroll around the malls as well. Shopping haven for some!!! Walk thoroughly and get to see the famous Petronas Twin Tower.

It was surreal seeing it real time ❀ Was amazed of the idea and it truly is a sight to end the day. There were many tourist but make sure to look for the best spot to have your photos taken.

IMG_3024

Dinner at Ah Cheng Laksa

Decided to have our dinner at KLCC Station Mall, looked for a resto offering Malaysian Delicacy and Ah Cheng Laksa is one to look for also.

Ordered Nasi Lemak (RM 10.90) with Lemon Ice Tea

IMG20170721212641

From KLCC we rode a train back to Pasar Seni and walk all the way to our hostel.

  • As a whole, it was really tiring, walking and going from one place to another, we had hard time communicating with some of the Malaysians as there are still some who cannot understand and speak english.
  • The mobile LRT / Train Station Map on my phone was truly a life saver 🙂 We were dependent on it the entire time. Trying to figure out where to ride and where to alight.
  • Fares in Malaysia was relatively cheap!!! so we you won’t get to worry when you lose your way (*hindi masakit sa bulsa) there was no card like the beep card in KL which you could use handy. One must really buy from time to time.

IMG20170720193311

  • We managed to see all sites available in KL and it was a fruitful day indeed.

DAY 3 was spent entirely at Legoland. Also read :  Legoland, Malaysia (Day Trip Guide and Details)

Let me know your thoughts about this. Should you have further questions, I’ll be happy to assist.

I thought about going to Malaysia when I was in Singapore but just didn’t have time. It does look really nice, I especially want to see the Batu Caves. And so good to hear it is affordable.

Yeah 🙂 being affordable made it extra special.

I lived in Singapore for four years and going to KL was always a blast! This itinerary has everything you should see in it! 🙂

Thank you so much ❀

Lovely pictures. A detailed itinerary. I bookmarked it for future reference. I will travel to Malay sometime soon 🙂

Good to know 🙂 Hope it’ll be useful to you. Have a safe travel!

The Batu Caves look so incredibly amazing, I don’t think I’d be able to contain myself there. Malaysia is such an underrated destination I feel, but they have such beauty and an unique culture to offer travelers. I love the hostel near Chinatown too. I’d definitely stay near where the good food is!!!

Yes 🙂 it was underrated indeed. And there could have been more destination to discover as well.

Hey Nathalie, thanks for your travel initiary! Useful tips and information :). I’ve been to Malaysia once when I was young, such a beautiful country! One of my close friends now lives and works in KL so I’d love to visit him one day, must be such a vibrant city :). Lovely pictures aswell!

Thank you 🙂

Would love to visit Kuala Lumpur soon.. Good to know that the trains are efficient and are good for commuting around. 🙂 The Merdeka Square, Batu Caves and the Petronas Tower are definitely high on my list! 🙂 Too bad about missing the Masjid Jamek. It would’ve been awesome to see it on your photos, too 🙂

yes 🙂 love the transpo access on all 🙂

It looks like you had a great time!!! The food looks delish!

Wow! This is one of the most comprehensive resources I’ve seen for Kuala Lumpur. I’m bookmarking it so I have it handy if I get a chance to visit KL in the future!

I spent 3 days in KL and stayed really close to the Reggae hostel, so cool that you have pictures of it, it brings back memories! I also took the bus from KL to Singapore and was pleasantly surprised by how easy and quick it was!

A Temple Surrounded by Clouds

Genting Highlands: Chin Swee Cave Temple

The next stop would be  Chin Swee Cave Temple , but before heading there, you can 🍮 lunch around Gohtong Jaya , which is on the way to the temple. There are some non-halal and halal restaurants there. Chin Swee Cave Temple was built by the late Lim Goh Tong, founder of the Genting Group (basically the guy who built Genting Highlands). This temple is built on a highland and shrouded by clouds. Besides being a  place of worship , it is also a  beautiful tourist attraction.

Genting Highlands: Chin Swee Cave Temple

Some of the most interesting attractions of this temple are the Giant Buddha Statue, Nine-Storey Pagoda, Guan Yin Statue, 10 Chambers of Hell, Sky Terrace and Bridge of Fairies. Since it is a temple, there is  no entrance fee required  to enjoy the  18 attractions  in Chin Swee Cave Temple. If you are hungry, there is a đŸ„ŹđŸ„ŠđŸ„• vegetarian restaurant  serving all vegetarian cuisine.

Genting Highlands: Chin Swee Cave Temple

You can also  spend a night in the Goh Tong Hall Residence Room by donating a minimum amount.  It is a comfortable 🛌accommodation with basic amenities. This place makes a strategic accommodation as it is  near the Chin Swee Station , where you can take the 🚠 Awana SkyWay Gondola (cable car)  to Genting SkyWorlds the next day. If you don’t feel like spending your night here, you can take a  cable car ride uphill   straight to  Genting SkyWorlds!

⏰Hours: 9am - 6pm 📞Phone: 03-2179 1886 📍Address: Exit 68, Genting Sempah, Pahang, 28750 Bentong

Spending the Night in the Clouds

Genting Highlands: First World Hotel

There are  7   accommodations near Genting SkyWorlds  where you can finally rest your body, soul and mind
at least for the night. The hotel ranges from the economically priced  First World Hotel , which also happens to be the world’s largest to   Crockfords ,  the only hotel in Malaysia to receive the prestigious 5-star⭐ rating by the Forbes Travel Guide for 4 consecutive years.

An Oddly Satisfying Place

Genting Highlands: Ripley's Believe It Or Not Adventureland

While waiting for the   Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park  to open up at 2pm, start your day 2 by visiting  Ripley's Believe It Or Not Adventureland.  If you are buying the Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park and Ripley's Believe It Or Not Adventureland đŸŽ«combo ticket, you’ll have to redeem both entrance tickets together at 2pm. So if you plan to visit Ripley's Believe It Or Not Adventureland earlier, it is  advisable to purchase the tickets separately.

Genting Highlands: Ripley's Believe It Or Not Adventureland

You can  expect to spend 45 mins to 1 hour here  with the 4D trick art museum, Jurassic Research Centre, Zombie Outbreak and the Ripley's Believe It or Not Odditorium. Adults who grew up watching Ripley's Believe It or Not TV Series will find the odditorium nostalgic with all the  collections and odd facts on display.

P.s:  Make sure to visit the luckiest room in the world before going to the casino

Endless Fun at the Indoor Theme Park

Genting Highlands: Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

The operation hour of the  Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park is from 2pm to 9pm . It requires a đŸŽ«separate ticket from the  outdoor theme park,   but you can always  get your ticket for value from us at Traworld!  This theme park has  3 types of rides which range from low-thrill (suitable for family) to high-thrill.

Genting Highlands: Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

There are about  19 fun and exciting rides  that you can enjoy with your friends, such as Chariot Cruise, Bumper Boss, Spin Crazy, Super Glider and many more! You can ride on all of them be it ☔rain or 🌞shine because   they are all  indoors.

What To Do After Dark?

Genting Highlands: Genting World Resorts

At night, you can watch a show, play some nostalgic games at the  Retro-style arcade  at the Lower Lobby of Genting Grand, go for a game of 🎳 bowling  at First World Plaza or do something  haram 😈 at the đŸŽČ🎰 casino  (strictly for non-muslims only ok!).

A Newly Transformed Outdoor Theme Park

Genting Highlands: Genting Skyworlds

Have a đŸ„žđŸ„ŻđŸžhearty breakfast because you’ll have an  exciting day ahead of you 😆 !  The rides and attractions at  Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park  are available  from 11am to 6pm.  You can always  book your tickets online with us, Traworld  for a  fast and smooth check-in process and at a very competitive price too!

Genting Highlands: Genting Skyworlds

There are  9 sections to explore in Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park.  They are Studio Plaza, Eagle Mountain, Central Park, Rio, Andromeda Base, Liberty Lane, Epic, Robots Rivet Town and Ice Age.

Genting Highlands: Genting Skyworlds

If you are going on a weekday, the queue for each ride is not more than 15 minutes. However, if you go on a public holiday or at weekends, expect to queue for an hour or more. This is why it is important to  download the Genting Skyworlds app . With the app, you can  queue virtually  (applicable for some attractions only) anywhere and enjoy more benefits.

Genting Highlands: Genting Skyworlds

It is recommended to quickly queue virtually for rides & attractions like Independence Days, Alpha Fighter Pilot, Epic Voyage To Moonhaven and Samba Glider as these are pretty popular and can have long waiting times.  One of the most recommended rides that you must try out is Independence Day: Defiance.  It is a motion-simulation ride based on the film Independence Day: Resurgence. Inside it, you can experience the  flying theatre.  This is not for the faint-hearted.

Genting Highlands: Jom Makan Street Food

There are  many food options here in Genting SkyWorlds ,  and you can even exit and re-enter the theme park to have your tummy filled. For Muslims, you can find more  halal dining options at Jom Makan Street Food.  Meanwhile, many stalls within the theme park itself also sell quick bites such as SUPER LONG 🌭hot dogs, 🌼tacos, 🍔burgers, etc.

Genting Highlands: Awana SkyWay

The  Awana SkyWay  only  operates until 11pm,  so  plan your journey properly  so that you can make your way home on time.

Have you already made up your mind on  which friends to  ajak  for a  3 days 2 nights trip to Genting Highlands?  Show them this  itinerary  so that you guys don’t have to plan one. Visit the Genting Highland Theme Park and many more now!

10 Short 3D2N Getaways to Johor, Batam or Bintan for that Impromptu Holiday!

We all need a short break now and then... especially since overseas travel is becoming the norm again. Quick getaways that do not require too long of a travelling time or too much planning - just pack and go with the kids!

3d2n malaysia trip

An easy 3D2N trip to either Malaysia, Batam or Bintan will do the trick. So I've compiled 10 getaway options - all of which are good for a 3-days-2-nights stay with the family. All of them are family-friendly, bursting with activities to keep the kids occupied!

So plan away! 😁

1. Talula Hill Farm Resort

(Kluang, Malaysia)

Situated a 1.5-hour drive from Singapore is a unique farm stay experience, with gorgeous cabins, farm animals and activities, and breathtaking views.

3d2n malaysia trip

Set in the foothills of Gunung Lambak in Kluang, Johor, Talula Hill Farm Resort is a fruit, animal, and vegetable farm which also happens to offer cabins for guests to momentarily escape the bustle of city life and soak in the tranquility of the resorts's surroundings.

3d2n malaysia trip

There are 4 types of cabins to choose from, ranging from the standard cabins for 2 pax to the Loft Cabins for up to 5 pax. For families of 5, book the Loft Cabin which is the most beautiful cabin of the lot. Three single beds occupy the first level while the loft level has a king-sized bed.

3d2n malaysia trip

Activities include a mini farm with animals like ducks, chickens, goats and rabbits, fishing, water dipping at the grotto and helping to harvest vegetables.

2. Kiki Beach Resort

(Batam, Indonesia)

Glamp over the sea at Kiki Beach Resort @ Batam! 😍😍😍

3d2n malaysia trip

If you have younger kids, there are also Lagoon Villas which are built on the main island and with direct access to the lagoon. I’m sure the kids will love jumping into the water right from the front porch!

3d2n malaysia trip

3. Rainforest Treehouse

(Kulai, Malaysia)

If you have always wondered what it's like to stay in a Treehouse and spend the night in the middle of a forest, then the Rainforest Treehouse in Kulai will tick all the boxes for you.

3d2n malaysia trip

Located in the state of Johor, Malaysia, Rainforest Treehouse is a 40-min drive away from Singapore but the surroundings is completely different from the concrete jungle we know in Singapore.

3d2n malaysia trip

Rainforest Treehouse currently has four types of accommodation available for booking. Two of them are for 2 to 4 persons, and includes a loft where the 'bedrooms' are at. For larger groups, there is the newest Treehouse which is located near the entrance of the eco-resort which can fit 6 to 8 persons. Completed in 2021, this will be most suited for families with younger kids and elderly as one doesn't need to walk far to reach the accommodation.

But for the true blue Treehouse experience, you have to book the 3-storey Treehouse (for 5 to 7 pax), otherwise known as the 'Sunset' Treehouse.

3d2n malaysia trip

Spending one night in this 3-storey Treehouse, surrounded by the dense rainforest was a surreal experience. The temperature at night was even colder than my aircon preset temperature at home! 😆

3d2n malaysia trip

Oh, and even if you aren’t staying there, you can visit the hidden Rainforest Cafe too! The wood-fired bread and drip coffee is 👍. Head to my full review post HERE for more details on what to expect.

4. Telunas Resorts (Riau Islands, Indonesia) Combining the sun, sand and sea in an all-inclusive resort with full comfort and no airport time, Telunas Resorts is all about long days at the beach - building sandcastles, fishing, paddling in a kayak, without the distraction of technology.

3d2n malaysia trip

Address:  Desa Mentangun, Moro Kepulauan Riau (Riau Islands), Indonesia Website

5. Sinar Eco Resort (Johor, Malaysia) Who says one needs to fly to Australia for a farm stay? Located in Pekan Nanas in Johor, Sinar Eco Resort is about one hour's drive away from Tuas Checkpoint. Not only can one stay in rooms constructed out of shipping containers, the resort is full of farm animals that kids can pet and feed. There is no better place where kids can come face to face with chickens, geese, horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, cows and goats.

3d2n malaysia trip

Nestled in the quiet tranquility of an oil palm estate, the resort provides the perfect atmosphere for families to embrace the countryside. There are a total of 8 air-conditioned containers in all, and each consists of a queen-sized bed, safe, TV, refrigerator and private bathroom. For larger groups, book the apartment rooms which come with three bedrooms each. Each bedroom can sleep 4 persons.

3d2n malaysia trip

The resort is split into two main areas which are separated by a gravel road. One area houses the accommodation and cafe while the other larger area is home to all of the farm animals and activities. If your kids adore animals, they will go absolutely bonkers here. Even better if they love FEEDING and CUDDLING animals! Besides the animals, families can go kayaking along a river, as well as taking a dip in its sheltered swimming pool.

6. Rimba Resort (Pulau Sibu, Malaysia) If you are looking to chill by the beach with only the bare necessities, then Rimba Resort is your answer. Located three hours from Singapore - 2.5 hours drive from Singapore to Tanjung Leman jetty and a 30-minute boat ride to Pulau Sibu, Rimba Resort offers the perfect place to relax without the usual resort frills.

3d2n malaysia trip

That's right: NO aircon, NO hot water, NO TV, and NO WiFi. But what you do get are 21 charming seafront chalets all within a stone’s throw away from the resort's 350m private beach. And the beach will be where the kids will be spending most of their time there, thanks to the gorgeous house reef. Trust me when I say the monkies had never seen so many clown fish in one single snorkel session. In fact, they they begged to snorkel every single morning... and afternoon!

3d2n malaysia trip

The resort is set up with a central dining room, lounge areas, bar, and sun deck. Meals are full board and are served at designated times. There is only one Family Chalet which comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, both with hot water showers while the other beach chalets each consist of one bedroom (1 queen bed, 1 single & 1 bunk bed) and one bathroom. Besides snorkelling, other activities to keep the kiddos occupied include fishing, kayaking, jungle trekking, board games, beach vollyball and a mini library. For parents, the resort is the perfect place to get away from it all, just by relaxing on the beach with a cocktail and a good book whilst watching the sunset. Address:  Pulau Sibu, Malaysia Website

7. Club Med Bintan (Bintan Island, Indonesia)

3d2n malaysia trip

Looking for a holiday where you can just kick back, relax and let the kids do all the planning of the activities? Then Club Med Bintan is the holiday resort you should be booking. The pioneer of an all-inclusive holiday where all meals, drinks and activities are included in the booking price, Club Med Bintan is j ust a short ferry ride from Singapore.

3d2n malaysia trip

From treating yourself to a beautiful spa perched on the rocks, or gliding through the air on a flying trapeze overlooking the sea, or honing your land and water sports skills, I would recommend at least a 3-night stay to truly experience what the resort has to offer.

3d2n malaysia trip

Kiddos can be packed off to the Mini Club Med (4-10 years old) or Junior Club Med (11-17 years old) where they will enjoy a full day's worth of activities while parents can chill the day away by indulging in their own activities as well. Come every evening, there will be a night show and dance segment where everyone will be encouraged to join in the revelry. Kids can even order all the mocktail bar counters!

3d2n malaysia trip

8. Montigo Resorts, Nongsa (Batam, Indonesia)

3d2n malaysia trip

Montigo Resorts, Nongsa is THE place to head to with the kids for a luxurious and fun-filled getaway. A 40-min ferry ride from Singapore and a mere 5-min car ride away from Nongsapura Ferry Terminal, the resort is Batam’s first 5-star all-villa resort with villas dotting the coastal shoreline offering unobstructed magnificent views of the South China Sea. The villas come with three floors of living space, each one boasting a private infinity pool—right outside the living room.

3d2n malaysia trip

The two storey Tilo Kids’ Club will be a hit with the kids! The first level houses several cubicles with game consoles like Wii and Xbox Kinect to keep older kids entertained while the entire second level is littered with toys, books, boardgames, three tube slides and a ball pit. The Kids’ Club also has a wading pool for kids. Sign the kids up for the full-day or half-day programmes (chargeable) and staff at the Club will look after them, while parents sneak off to indulge at the Montigo Spa.

3d2n malaysia trip

Address:  Jl. Hang Lekir Nongsa, Batam, Indonesia Website

9. UK Agro Farm (Johor, Malaysia)

3d2n malaysia trip

Situated in Johor - about an hour’s drive from Singapore - UK Agro Farm Resort is Malaysia’s largest goat and sheep farm, with 100 acres of grazing land for 4,000 sheep. It offers a farmstay experience in the form of the ‘Long House’, a traditional house structure that has its roots in the Iban community in Sarawak. Built on stilts and with long corridors, the rooms overlook vast green meadows and grazing pastures. Rooms come with the usual amenities like air-conditioning and water heater so they are pretty decent, clean and functional.

3d2n malaysia trip

There are tons of farm activities to do such as touring the Herb Sanctuary and Mushroom and Fruit Farms to learn all about plants. The highlight of the farm tour is probably feeding and cuddling sheep at the Sheep Farm. Kids can try bottle feeding baby goats, or feeding grain to ostriches at the Ostrich Park. For the adventurous, try your hand at the Sheep Challenge where participants are given 3 minutes to catch a sheep in an enclosure, and they stand to win a prize if successful.

10. Lotus Desaru (Johor, Malaysia)

3d2n malaysia trip

Located on the southeastern tip of Johor, the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort offers apartments (1–4 bedrooms) with living and dining areas, as well as a kitchenette (microwave and fridge). In addition to fun at the beach, there are various activities that families can enjoy while at Desaru. Visit the nearby Desaru Fruit Farm and Ostrich Farm for a fun-filled educational day. Or go on an evening Fireflies Cruise where kids will see these fascinating insects light up the trees.

3d2n malaysia trip

With a massive ‘spash-tacular’ water park situated in the middle of the resort, what do you think? Water park features include numerous water slides, a water playground and a huge tipping coconut - all of which are guaranteed to elicit squeals and screams from delighted kids. Don’t miss the Lazy River - a meandering slide that starts at the top of a slope and brings sliders down four water channels and three whirlpools!

The best things to do in Malacca (Melaka) – 3D2N travel guide

Posted on Last updated: September 12, 2023

Categories Melaka , Visit Malaysia

Malacca is a noteworthy UNESCO World Heritage city and a must-visit destination in Malaysia. This old city has a rich historical past with the strong influence of several European countries.

We have been here multiple times, but the colonial buildings, a smorgasbord of ethnic food, and the antique street view still have enough power to attract us to be here again.

So we traveled to Malacca again last week.  Here is what we have done during our three days and two nights.

A historical city

Malacca (also known as Melaka) was a simple fishing village until Parameswara, a prince from Sumatra, landed on Malacca’s shores in the late 14th century. In the 15th century, the Malacca Sultanate allied with China to fight against the invasion by the Siamese. Over time, more Chinese settled in Malacca and married the local Malays, who are called the Baba Nyonya peoples. The Portuguese arrived and took over Malacca in 1511. Then it passed into the Dutch’s hand in 1641. The Dutch ruled Malacca for 150 years until the British gained control. Finally, Malaysia gained independence in 1957. The rise and fall of these settlements have lent an assortment of cultural influences to Malacca, which is still alive and visible today. As a result, this cultural heritage has gained recognition which has been declared a historical city and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Stadthuys of Malacca

Make sure to watch our visit Malacca video! It is at the end of this article.

1. Visit Cheng Hoon Teng Temple 青云亭

We checked into Liu Men Hotel, opposite the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. So, naturally, we just cross the street to visit the temple upon arrival.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Malacca. It was built in 1645 during the Dutch Malacca era by the second Chinese Kapitan Chan Lak Koa. All the building materials were brought from China, even the artisans who constructed the temple.

The temple practiced three doctrinal systems of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. It has magnificent architecture and was awarded a UNESCO award for outstanding restoration in 2003.

The temple has a few prayer halls, with the main halls dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Guan Yin.

Photography was prohibited in the temple, so we took photos at the main entrance. The architecture inside is intricate, exquisite, and detailed. There are various inscriptions of Chinese characters in gold color. It is a functioning temple where people worship.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple 青云亭, Malacca

  • Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 5:00 daily
  • Address: 25, Jalan Tokong, Kampung Dua, 75200 Melaka
  • Tel: +606-282 9343
  • Entrance fee: Free, and dressing appropriately is recommended

2. Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple and Masjid Kampong Kling

A city with diverse cultures, Malacca is multicultural, where everyone lives side by side harmoniously. The area around Jalan Tokong is called ‘Harmony Street’ because the Chinese Temple, the mosque, and the Hindu Temple co-exist closely.

Masjid Kampong Kling is just a minute’s walk from Cheng Hong Teng temple. This mosque was built by Indian Muslim traders in the 18th century and had a minaret with a pagoda-like rooftop.  The architectural design of the mosque is a cross between Chinese, Hindu, and Malay. The pagoda-like rooftop can easily be mistaken for a Chinese building.

Not far away is the Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Malaysia, built in the 18th century.

You immediately feel the diversity, tolerance, and acceptance of all races permeating the air while visiting the mosque and the neighborhood temples.

3d2n malaysia trip

3. Admire the old architecture at Jonker street, Melacca

We walked toward the Malacca riverbank in the evening, passing many historical buildings in the Jonker Street area. Malacca’s trip is incomplete if you do not visit Jonker Street.

The grand gate of the street welcomes us with the Chinese New Year vibe (we came here just two weeks before the Chinese New Year). However, numerous buildings with European, Malay, and Chinese cultures date back to the 17th century once you enter the street.

When we meandered through the narrow side lanes, more cute small cafes and traditional buildings were a great treat to my camera lenses.

These shops typically have square shape windows arranged symmetrically, with a fanlike design on the top part. Two pilasters are in front of each shop, some with beautiful carvings. The roof usually comes with floral ornamentation and heavy cornice.  One such prominent building is now converted into the Baba and Nyonya Museum.

I was more thrilled by the architecture of the old buildings than the souvenir store. But, if you are interested, make sure you come here when the sun goes down on Saturday nights and Sundays to visit the Jonker Walk night market. The street is the haven for shoppers who immerse in the bargaining atmosphere, with everything from souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry, to various local delicacies offered at the food stalls.

Jonker walk, Melacca

The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

The Baba and Nyonya Museum showcases the richness of the culture and life of the pre-WW2 Peranakan homes. The museum was the house of the Chan family, which turned into a museum in 1985.

Photography is not permitted inside the museum. However, it is worth paying a small entrance fee to admire the opulence of the house of the renowned Peranakan family.

The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

  • Opening Hours: 10.00 am to 5 pm daily
  • Address: 48-50, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, 75200 Melaka
  • Tel: +606-282 1273
  • Entrance fee: RM16 for adults (guided tour)

4. Stroll along the riverbank of the Malacca river

We strolled along the Malacca River Walk in the evening, an ideal way to see the historical city of Malacca. Numerous landmarks are nearby, with endless Instagram-worth spots to take pictures. It was great to spend a late afternoon here when the sun was no longer blistering hot.

There are many murals on the old buildings on both sides of the river.

One of the best things you can do is to rest at one of those whimsically-named hipster cafes on the promenade, admiring the street art and graffiti.

You can also see the imposing facade of the Church of St. Francis Xavier, built in the 19th century.

Alternatively, you can take the Melaka river cruise that passes by those vivid murals and century-old bridges. Instead, we choose to take more time to stroll along the riverbank.

Malacca river cruise

5. Visit the surrounding of Dutch Square

We cross the bridge from Jonker Street to the other side of the riverbank, which looks significantly different from the traditional Chinese architecture of Jonker Street. Here is where the Dutch Squares is, also called the Red Square, as most of the buildings have a crimson facade,

A. Christ Church

The main attractions are the Christ Church and Stadhuys. Christ Church was built from 1741 to 1753 by the Portuguese. It is Malaysia’s oldest Protestant church.

The building has tall, massive walls and columns, topped with a small arch that hangs a bell. The building is predominantly red, with the church’s name and a big cross painted white. The church bears all the hallmarks characteristic of 18th-century Dutch architecture.

Christ Church was initially white but painted everything red to match the red buildings nearby when the British conquered Malacca.

Christ Church

  • Opening Hours: 9.00 am to 4.30 pm daily
  • Address: Jalan Gereja, Bandar Hilir, 75000 Malacca
  • Tel: +606-284 8804

B. Stadthuys

Besides the Christ Church is Stadthuys, a Dutch colonial-style architecture with massive walls, louvered windows, and doors with wrought iron hinges. It was built between 1641 and 1660 and is modeled based on the town hall of Hoorn in the Netherlands.

Stadhuys is an old Dutch spelling, meaning city hall, which was the office of the Dutch Governor.

The building has turned into the History & Ethnography Museum, which displays numerous traditional costumes, and artifacts, and showcases the customs and traditions of Malacca.

In front of Stadhuys is the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, built by the wealthy Straits Chinese family, but it looks distinctively Dutch.

Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower of Malacca

C. Water fountain, trishaw, and stores

In front of Stadhuys and Christ Church is Queen Victoria’s Fountain, built to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1901. It stands elegantly as ever and is one of Malaysia’s last traces of the British colonial era.

There were also plenty of colorful trishaws in front of Stadhuys. However, I felt a bit kitschy and too touristy, so I decided to skip it and go to nearby souvenir shops. Each trishaw is decorated with different themes and blasting loud music as they pedal the passengers around. It can be fun, especially with kids.

You can pick up some souvenirs and some local handicrafts. Most of the items are reasonably priced but still have room to bargain.

souvenieer shop at Durch Square, Melaka

6. St. Paul’s Church

We walked up to St  Paul’s Hill, behind the Dutch Square.

St. Paul’s Church is right on the top of the hill. It was built by the Portuguese in 1521, dedicated to Virgin Mary, and is the oldest church in Malaysia. The church remained in use until the Christ Church was built.

The stones featured inside the church have old Dutch text on them. These plaques are the tombstones erected back in the 17th century.

There is a statue of St Francis Xavier in front of the church. He established the first modern school in Malacca and used it for missionary work. The statue was built in 1952.

7. Flora de la Mar Maritime Museum

There are a few museums near Dutch Square, and we choose to visit the maritime museum only due to our tight schedule. It is just a short walk from Dutch Square along the riverbank.

The museum is housed in a replica of Flor de la Mar, a Portuguese ship that sank off the Straits of Malacca in 1511.

The museum is about the trading activities and seafaring history of Malacca in the old days.

It displays exhibits, artifacts, ancient coins, and documents from the Portuguese era.

There is also an abundance of model ships from different periods.

Maritime Museum

  • Opening Hours: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (closed on Monday)
  • Address: Jln Merdeka, Bandar Hilir, 75000 Melaka
  • Tel: +606-282 6526
  • Entrance fee: RM3 for adult

8. Visit Kampong Morten and the Portuguese Settlement

On the following day, we visited Kampong Morten, a historical traditional Malay village in the city dating back to the 1920s.  The village has more than one hundred traditional Malay houses, and most have been upkeep.

The village is near the Malacca River. You can do a riverbank walk from the Dutch Squared to this far or drive here within minutes.

We were told there is a guided tour, but it is only for a specific time slot.

So we decided to walk around the village, admiring the colorful wooden Malays houses.  Some of them have turned into cafes and homestays for visitors.

Kampong Morten

The Portuguese settlement is the home of the Kristang people, an ethnic group with mixed Portuguese and Malay heritage. We came here in the morning, but there was nothing to see. There is a square (Medan Portugis) with some restaurants, but they are not open now. Therefore, it is better to visit this place during Christmas when it is full of plenty of activities and performances.

Portuguese Settlement, Melaka

9. Savor the local food in Malacca

Malacca is also a gastronomical haven with a wide variety of specialty food. We have tried a few which are unique and delicious. Our Malacca friend hand-picked some stores for us. Some foods are famous, and others are only available in Malacca!

Nyonya Cuisine

Nyonya cuisine is from the descendants of Chinese migrants who married the local Malay.  We chose to visit Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine , recommended by friends.  These dishes are the amalgamation of Chinese and Malay cooking. We ordered Nyonys mixed vegetables, Ponteh chicken, their famous Pie Tee, and Nyonya laksa.

3d2n malaysia trip

Specialty burger

Burgers do not originate from Malacca, but Baboon House serves delicious burgers.

We ordered a burger with tender pork chops instead of a beef patty and served with watermelon cubes on the skewer! From the perspective of a restaurateur myself, it is a place not to be missed as long as they can maintain the standard.

We did not encounter baboons after all. Instead, we thought we had entered the house of a wealthy Chinese family. There is antique furniture and art display on the wall, and you can only review its sitting area after crossing into the middle section of the shop.

There is eclectic furnishing, mainly decades-old solid wooden tables, and chairs, with various paintings and crafts hanging on the wall. So you can sit back to relax and pick a book to read from its extensive collection after trudging through the narrow lane under the scorching heat.

Surprisingly, there is even a well in the open-air courtyard.

the entrance of Baboon Hourse, Malacca

Coconut shake

We head to Klebang Original Coconut Shake to have the freshest coconut shake.  You can find coconut cake in every nook and corner of Malacca, but this store is the most famous one.  They have a constant flow of customers, churn out the shredded coconut and juice, and add directly to the ice. It is a great place to enjoy the freshest possible coconut shake, although it takes about ten minutes of driving distance from the town.

 Klebang Original Coconut Shake

Satay celup

Ban Lee Siang is one of the oldest satay celup restaurants in Malacca.

Don’t miss out on trying satay celup in Malacca, as you will unlikely find this fantastic food elsewhere.  This street food is meat, seafood, and vegetables on a skewer cooked in a boiling satay sauce (spicy peanut sauce).

Nyonya kueh

Nonya kueh (bite-sized snack/dessert) is famous in Malacca. Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake has a massive collection of kueh.  These are bite-size sweet desserts, which use palm sugar primarily to sweeten them.

Their cendol is the best choice to quench your thirst and pair with the kueh.

 Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake

Chicken rice balls

After shopping at Jonker Street, we had lunch at Chung Wah Chicken Rice Ball.

The rice is compressed and shaped like a golf ball, which is unique.  Many stores sell chicken rice balls on Jonker street. It tastes like Hainanese chicken rice in Kuala Lumpur, with a different presentation. Do try chicken rice balls at this shop before continuing your sightseeing and shopping

10. Other interesting places worth visiting in Melaka

  • The Hang Li Poh’s Well (also known as King’s Well) is the oldest water well in Malaysia.
  • We dropped by Taman Mini Malaysia and Mini ASEAN at Ayer Keroh on the way back to Kuala Lumpur from Malacca, about half an hour’s drive from the center of Malacca city. The park offers you the opportunity to visit the replicas of traditional houses of all 13 different states in Malaysia, with their respective characteristics. Unfortunately, part of the park was under refurbishment during our visit, so we could only enter a few houses to glimpse each state’s furnishings, fixtures, handcraft, and arts. Hopefully, the refurbishment work will complete soon as many houses are poorly maintained.

Hang Li Po well, Melacca

We managed to visit the most popular tourist destinations but missed a few. (You should add these to your Malacca itinerary.

  • The Menara Taming Sari stands 110 meters above the ground, with a revolving tower rising to 80 meters. It is the ideal place to have a panoramic view of Malacca 360 degrees. The tower is only five minutes from the maritime museum and within walking distance from Dutch Square. Unfortunately, it was under maintenance during our visit.  You can include a city viewing of the tower in your itinerary.
  • We also did not go to the A Famosa fort as time is not permissible, although it is just at the back of St. Paul Church.
  • Melaka Straits Mosque is a floating mosque located on the man-made Malacca.  It is best to visit in the evening, especially during sunset.

Menara Taming Sari Malacca

We stay at Liu Men Hotel

This article is incomplete without mentioning Liu Men Hotel. We picked Liu Men Hotel, among the best hotels in Malacca, rated at Agoda.com. It caught our attention as we read that it is an 80-year old building turn boutique hotel,

Liu Men Hotel ,Malacca

Our room comes with dark brown timber flooring and mahogany furniture with a rustic feeling. The bed is lit with ceiling-hung lantern-shaped lighting.

The bathroom is white-tiled and black-countered, which is bright and cozy.

Liu Men Hotel ,Malacca

The courtyard is neo-traditional Malaccan style and is where the breakfast was served.

Liu Men Hotel ,Malacca breakfast

The spiraling flight of a wrought iron staircase takes the prime spot, a functional stair leading to the first floor.

The furniture captures the essence of Peranakan culture, with vivid shapes and colors matching perfectly with its quaint yet stylized interior.

A 3D2N Melaka Itinerary For Your Next Long Weekend Getaway

3d2n malaysia trip

Located next to the Straits of Melaka in the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia, Melaka is a haven for avid travel junkies from both within and outside the country. Known affectionately as 'The Historic State', the city has long attracted visitors with its charming historical ambiance, deep-rooted cultural traditions, and especially its wide array of delectable local delicacies.

All things considered, Melaka isn't exactly a 'big' city by any definition, which makes it a perfect destination for those looking for a place to relax and unwind over a long weekend! Here's a 3D2N itinerary to help you get the very best of your visit to one of Malaysia's most popular holiday destinations!

Getting there and where to stay

3d2n malaysia trip

There are several ways to get to Melaka. The best way, if you're travelling from within Malaysia itself, is to simply drive there. The drive would take approximately two hours from Kuala Lumpur and six from Penang.

If you're flying in, be prepared to make a few stopovers as Melaka International Airport currently only welcomes direct flights from Pekanbaru (Indonesia) and Penang. The nearest train station for Melaka is Tampin, which is about 40km away from the city, so you will probably need to transfer to a bus or catch a (rather pricey) cab from the station.

Once you're in Melaka, I recommend looking for accommodation in Melaka City, the capital of the state. It's where all the best attractions and food are and the city centre has an abundance of hotels, hostels and B&Bs compared to other areas.

And now that you've (hopefully) settled in, let's get to exploring!

Day 1: A'Famosa → Dutch Square → Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum → Melaka River Cruise (Stopovers at Maritime Museum, Masjid Selat, The Shore Oceanarium + Sky Tower)

3d2n malaysia trip

Seeing as Melaka is a city steeped in history, it is fitting that our journey begins with a visit to the city's most storied location: A'Famosa Fortress . Located on the serene St. Paul's Hill, the fort is one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. The fortress gate, the Porta de Santiago , is the oldest surviving European architectural monument in the region. Take some time to admire the historical ruins of the fort, including the iconic St. Paul's Church that was built in 1521, and take a few photos of the scenery there.

3d2n malaysia trip

After that, take a short walk towards Dutch Square where you will be able to see Melaka's famous red terracotta buildings left behind by the Dutch in the 1700s. There, you'll find the Stadthuys , once the official residence of the Dutch Governors, now refurbished to house several interesting museums, such as the Muzium Rakyat (People's Museum).

However the main attraction of Dutch Square is Christ Church which stands out even amongst the other colourful buildings. Feel free to visit the interior of this Anglican church and marvel at its elegant designs.

3d2n malaysia trip

From Dutch Square, make your way down to Melaka's Maritime Museum for a quick look into what made Melaka rise to prominence as an international trade city all those centuries ago. You can't miss it, just look for a massive ship on the side of the road!

For lunch, we'll be digging into Melaka's famous chicken rice balls ! Ee Ji Ban Restaurant is one of the most famous chicken rice ball restaurants in Melaka City and it's only five minutes or so away from the Maritime Museum! It is also a halal-certified restaurant, making it the perfect option for Muslim travellers!

3d2n malaysia trip

After lunch, head towards Pulau Melaka which is about 2km away from Ee Ji Ban Restaurant and visit the majestic Masjid Selat , the floating mosque on the Straits of Melaka. Beautiful both inside and out, it is one of the most photogenic locations in the city and one that not many people actually know about. Score!

Once you'd had enough photos for your Instagram feed, it's time to head towards The Shore Shopping Gallery for a slightly hair-raising experience, but before that, you'll pass by the unique Upside Down House , which, as the name suggests, is a house with an interior that is completely the wrong side up! How about it? Some wacky fun to fight off the after-lunch slumber!

3d2n malaysia trip

Our next agenda is not for the faint of heart. Located on the bank of the Melaka River is The Shore Shopping Gallery, which houses the Melaka Sky Tower ! For those who dare walk on the glass panels of Melaka's tallest building (43 floors above ground), you'll be treated to a breathtaking aerial view of Melaka!

Staying closer to the ground, you'll find The Shore's interactive Oceanarium which is home a huge collection of seashells and a mini-aquarium which allows visitors to touch bamboo sharks and hedgehogs, and to feed turtles!

3d2n malaysia trip

Back on the culture and heritage trail, the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum is only a short drive from The Shore Shopping Gallery. From visiting exhibitions of furniture and utensils to learning about their cultural traditions, here, you'll be able to peer into the way of life of Melaka's unique Baba Nyonya community! And once you're done with the tour, take a short walk to L W Nyonya Pineapple Tarts shop to sample and buy some irresistible pineapple tarts.

For dinner, head over to the highly-rated, halal-certified Kocik Restaurant for a taste of authentic Baba Nyonya cuisine ! Take the time to sample some of the best Peranakan dishes and don't forget to wash it all down with some traditional desserts too!

3d2n malaysia trip

As night falls, make your way towards the Taman Rempah Jetty to board a cruise of the Melaka River . While there's nothing wrong with joining the cruise during the day, I recommend saving this activity for the night as that is when the lights along the river bank come on, making the cruise even more colourful, romantic and ambient.

As you cruise along the river, you'll be able to spot Kampung Morten , one of the few remaining authentic Malay villages in Melaka, well preserved in terms of architecture (think wooden houses) and lifestyle.

And with that whimsical journey along the Melaka River, we conclude the first day of our tour! Rest up because the next day's going to be equally exciting!

Day 2: Taman Mini Malaysia & ASEAN → Botanical Gardens → Melaka Batik House → Pantai Klebang → Jonker Walk

3d2n malaysia trip

After all the excitement of the first day, day two is more about relaxation and enjoying the natural scenery in Melaka. You can either start your day early with a hearty breakfast or sleep in till the late morning. We're not visiting as many places today so you have the liberty of a late start.

3d2n malaysia trip

Once you're up though, head in the direction of Ayer Keroh and visit Taman Mini Malaysia and ASEAN . The cultural village contains impressive replicas of traditional Malaysian and ASEAN homes, each fully furnished with respective interior décor depicting the culture of the families who live within them.

Enjoy exploring the history of Malaysia, its traditional costumes and handicraft, and maybe even try your hand at traditional Malay games like congkak ! Visit during the weekends to enjoy regular cultural dance performances!

Next, head on over to the beautiful Botanical Gardens and admire the wide range of flora and fauna on display. What sets the Melaka Botanical Gardens apart, however, is the Kampung Buku , or Book Village located within its vicinity. Part of an ongoing project to encourage reading and to make books readily available to the public, the Book Village in Melaka contains more than 15,000 books on its shelves, making it a must-visit for all self-professed bibliophiles!

3d2n malaysia trip

Stop for a simple lunch at the Botanical CafĂ© before heading to Melaka International Trade Center where you’ll be visiting the Batik House . Here, you can learn the art of batik printing (traditional Malay-Indo fabric art) and can even try making a batik print of your own to bring home as a meaningful memento! Daily classes are subject to slot availability though so make sure to call in advance to avoid disappointment!

3d2n malaysia trip

Now that the sun is starting to set, head towards Pantai Klebang for Insta-worthy white sandy beaches, a pleasant sea breeze, crashing waves, an alluring sunset, and awesome coconut milk shakes ! Yes, the creamy coconut shakes at Klebang Beach are famous throughout Melaka (even Malaysia to a certain extent!) and are not to be missed during any trip to Melaka! Laze around on the beach and watch the sun set before embarking on the highlight of any Melakan itinerary: visiting Jonker Street !

3d2n malaysia trip

Jonker Street is the most happening place in Melaka, no doubt about it. Especially packed during the night, it is home to Melaka's famous Jonker Walk Night Market , in addition to several unique eateries and restaurants! Take your time to explore this lively area and sample some of Melaka's best street food!

One particular delicacy you must try is satay celup ! Often found only in Melaka, it's like hotpot except instead of an aromatic broth, you get a boiling pot of peanut sauce (satay, duh!). Cook your food in the peanut sauce and munch away! Since this is the end of day two, I'll leave it to you to decide when you want to call it a night! See you tomorrow!

3d2n malaysia trip

It's our last day in Melaka! How did time fly by so fast? Well, let's make the most of our last remaining hours in Melaka, shall we? First stop: the Taming Sari Gyro Tower !

While it's not as tall (and harrowing, for those who have a fear of heights) as the Sky Tower, this slow-moving gyro tower offers spectacular aerial views of the city as you slowly ascend to the top. You'll be able to spot some of the places you've visited the past two days, such as St. Paul's Hill, the Maritime Museum and Jonker Street! Not a bad way to recap all you've done in Melaka, eh?

3d2n malaysia trip

Next, we'll make a quick stop at Tan Kim Hock Product Centre where you get to shop for local snacks that are famously Melakan. Definitely go for the durian-flavoured dodols (sweet, toffee-like sweets), coconut cookies , pineapple tarts and gula melaka (Melakan palm sugar)! Once you've stocked up, it's time to visit the final destination of our long weekend getaway in Melaka.

The Dataran Pahlawan Megamall is Melaka's most popular shopping centre, housing internationally-renowned brands and high-quality products. However, we're not just here for shopping! Within the mall, you can find the Nyonya Memoirs , which is basically an interactive space modelled after Peranakan life in the 1920s. Enjoy a guided tour or put on a traditional Baba Nyonya costume and snap away to conclude your memorable journey to Melaka!

If only we had more time!

Of course, there's still more to explore in Melaka than what's been listed in this itinerary! If you have more time, you should definitely check out places such as Wonderland Theme Park and the Melaka Tropical Fruit Farm . Both these  places are located further away from the city but they offer fun experiences you won't get anywhere else!

Also, if you're a husky lover like me, you would want to free up some time for the Huskitory , arguably Malaysia's pioneer husky café, housing around 20 energetic huskies you can snuggle up to.

That being said, this 3D2N itinerary is pretty solid if you want to cover most of the major attractions in Malaysia's historic state of Melaka! So, with that, go make your travel plans now! I hear the next long weekend is not that far away! See you soon!

3D2N Muslim-Friendly Itinerary To Taman Negara, Malaysia's Oldest National Park

avatar-name

Cheng Sim  ‱  Jul 06, 2020

[Updated 5 January 2021]

If there's one national park that every Malaysian should visit, that would be Taman Negara . Situated in Pahang, there are many things to do at Taman Negara, ranging from jungle trekking to visit the Orang Asli village. If you're planning to experience the best of Malaysia's oldest national park within a span of a weekend, check out our 3D2N Muslim-friendly itinerary to Taman Negara!

Taman Negara

3d2n malaysia trip

  • Taman Negara is Malaysia's oldest national park that's situated in Kuala Tahan, Pahang
  • Said to be 130 million years old, it is one of the oldest rainforests in the world.
  • Fun fact: Did you know that Taman Negara is older than the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, which is 55 million years old?
  • The best time to visit Taman Negara is between February and September (dry season)

How to go to Taman Negara

  • There are two ways to travel to Taman Negara
  • By car : From Kuala Lumpur - Jerantut - Kuala Tahan, it takes about 3 hours 30 mins. Click here for routes
  • By bus : Take the bus from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut Bus Station (2 hours 15 mins). Then, take another bus from Jerantut Bus Station to Kuala Tahan Bus Stand (1 hour). The total bus fare is approximately RM86 per person. Click here for bus fares and journey

Where to stay at Taman Negara

3d2n malaysia trip

  • There are a few homestays and resorts available near Taman Negara
  • Mutiara Taman Negara : We stayed here! It's the only resort that's located inside Taman Negara. The room rate starts at RM288 per night
  • Xcape Resort Taman Negara : Situated in Kuala Tahan Village, this resort is within walking distance to Taman Negara. The room rate starts at RM20 per night
  • Taman Negara Rainbow Guesthouse : A cosy homestay that's within walking distance from Jeti Taman Negara. The room rate starts at RM73 per night.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • Once you arrived at Taman Negara, check-in at Mutiara Taman Negara Resort .
  • #HHWT Tip : For Malaysians and Singaporeans, check out the Kembara 3D2N package that includes accommodation, half-board meals and activities (all tours inclusive of licensed nature guide and insurance coverage). The package starts at RM498 nett per person (twin share basis).
  • After check-in, walk over to Jabatan Perhilitan (Wildlife Department and National Park) to pay an entry permit, a camera (including mobile phone) license and other fees.
  • We paid an entry permit of RM1 per person and a camera license of RM5 per mobile phone.
  • You must always carry the entry permit with you because you might be asked to present it to the nature guide from time to time. During our trip, we were only asked to present once before we began our Jungle Trekking and Canopy Walk activity.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • For lunch, head over to the in-house Seri Mutiara Restaurant that serves buffet breakfast or dinner, set lunch and a la carte menu.
  • Halal status : The restaurant uses all meats and ingredients sourced from halal-certified suppliers, but alcohol is served in the premise for non-Muslim guests.
  • Since the menu price at Seri Mutiara Restaurant is expensive, there are a few floating restaurants situated opposite the resort, including Taman Negara Floating Restaurant and Liana Floating Restaurant, that serve delicious food and are more affordable.
  • However, you need to pay RM1 per person (one way) for a boat ride from the resort to the floating restaurant each time.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • Visiting the Orang Asli village and rapid shooting are two of the most popular activities in Taman Negara
  • When you visit the Orang Asli village (native people in Bahasa Malaysia), you'll meet the Batek tribe who are known for their amazing hunting skills with the blowpipe and making fire using reed skin and roots.
  • The Batek tribe is also nomadic, so you won't meet the same family when you return to Taman Negara again.
  • Fun fact: The Batek people can speak Bahasa Malaysia because they communicate with the locals in Kuala Tahan. However, they're very shy and it's best to ask permission from the guide before taking photos of them.

3d2n malaysia trip

Credit: Mutiara Taman Negara Resort on Facebook

  • For rapid shooting, you'll sit in a high-speed longboat that shoots through the seven major rapids along Tembeling River.
  • It was fun riding a boat that cuts through the river while getting soaked by splashes of water.
  • Since it's a wet activity, bring a waterproof bag to store your phone, camera, wallet and other equipment.
  • You don't want to risk getting your shoes wet too, so wear a pair of sandals or waterproof Adidas kampung (black rubber shoes) that can be purchased from the resort's supermarket.
  • Both the Rapid Shooting and Visit the Orang Asli Village activities are priced at RM100 per person.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • After breakfast, take a boat ride to a beautiful cascade named Lata Berkoh. The journey to the cascade also lets you experience the scenic view along Sungai Tahan
  • If you're lucky, you might be able to spot water monitor lizard, river otter, eagle, hornbill, kingfisher and more.
  • Before you reach Lata Berkoh, you'll stop to see the tallest tree in Taman Negara called Tualang Tree and feed the fishes at Kelah Sanctuary
  • For your final stop, you need to jungle trek for 15-20 minutes before you reach Lata Berkoh where you can relax and enjoy the view.
  • The Lata Berkoh boat ride is priced at RM286 per boat (maximum four people)

3d2n malaysia trip

  • After dinner, join the nature guide for Night Jungle Walk where you can see nocturnal animals and insects that roam Taman Negara at night.
  • If you're lucky, you can spot sambar deer, mouse deer or porcupine too.
  • While we were there, we spotted a herd of deers grazing in the field from the Observation Hide.
  • #HHWT Tip : We recommend bringing a torchlight or use your camera's torchlight to spot these creatures.
  • The Night Jungle Walk is priced at RM30 per person.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • After breakfast, join the Jungle Trekking and Canopy Walk activity led by an experienced nature guide!
  • While there are wooden platforms and stairs along the 400-metre trail, a bit of stamina is required to hike up the steep trail to the first lookout of Teresek Hill.
  • If you want to see the view of Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia, take another 10-20 minute hike to reach the second lookout.

3d2n malaysia trip

  • Once done, make your way down to the Canopy Walk known as one of the longest suspended bridges in the world.
  • Since the bridge can only hold four people at a time, the nature guide will submit your name and you need to wait for your turn.
  • While walking on the Canopy Walk, experience another panoramic view of Gunung Tahan as well as the surrounding canopy trees, hills and valleys
  • The Canopy Walk is a weather-dependent activity. Since it rained when we arrive, the park had to close the Canopy Walk temporarily due to poor weather and we went back to the resort without experiencing the walk.
  • #HHWT Tip : The Canopy Walk closes every Friday for maintenance, so remember to plan your activities accordingly!
  • The Jungle Trekking and Canopy Walk activities are priced at RM77 per person

3d2n malaysia trip

  • After lunch, you can check out from the resort and bid farewell to Taman Negara
  • You'll have the best time experiencing the sights and sounds of nature at Taman Negara, so make sure to return and discover more activities in the future!

There are many reasons why a nature getaway to Taman Negara is a must. From enjoying the scenic boat rides along the Tembeling River to admiring the view of Gunung Tahan, it's definitely a must-do for every Malaysian.
