The tradition of celebrating the spring festival in Bengal was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. While similar to Holi, Basanta Utsav distinguishes itself with its graceful festivities. The fervent celebration takes place on Dol Purnima, the Full Moon day of Falgun. The day begins with a lively procession featuring long musical dances, followed by performances of Tagore’s music, rhymes, and dances by students from various departments. Dressed in yellow (basanti), symbolizing the vibrancy of spring, boys and girls elegantly welcome the season of hope. As the day progresses, both students and teachers participate in applying colored powders, known as abeer (abhor), on each other. This colorful tradition transforms the university premises into a lively canvas of hues. Visitors are warmly welcomed and encouraged to partake in the festive spirit. The air is not only filled with a myriad of vivacious colors but also with the essence of joy and hope, creating a delightful atmosphere. In the evening, students from Sangit Bhavana at Visva-Bharati present selected dance dramas by Tagore, adding an artistic touch to the festivities..

Poush Mela: The festival of music and craft, Posh Mela is organised between December and January. It is celebrated on the Foundation Day of the University.

Bolpur santiniketan tour cost from kolkata.

Santiniketan is famous for Rabindranath Thakur. The prime attraction is Biswa Bharati Campus. There are many other places of interest in Shantiniketan, like Kankalitala temple, Amar Kutir, Khoai boner hat, etc.

Shantiniketan Travel Plan from Kolkata

We started our tour from Sealdah with Kanchanjanga Express at 6:35 am. We reach the Bolpur station around 9:30 am.

In my Santiniketan tour plan list, first, we visited the  Gitanjali Rail Museum  opposite the Bolpur railway station. It’s my first visiting place for Shantiniketan Bolpur sightseeing.

Next, we booked a Toto to reach Amar Kutir from the Gitanjali Rail Museum. In this way, we visit  Kankalitala temple , then  Biswa Bangla Haat ,  Prakriti Bhavan , and go  Amar Kutir , where we stay for the 1st day in Bolpur.

After that, we had lunch and rested at  our hotel , and in the evening, we visited Amar Kutir premises,  Kopai River , and went shopping there. Last, we came back and had dinner at  Amar Kutir Hensel  again.

The next day, we left Amar Kutir and visited Santiniketan, where we booked another budget hotel. While on this journey, we visited Srijani Shilpagram and Ballavpur Deer Park and reached the hotel.

We kept our luggage in our new room and went to  Biswabharati Santiniketan Ashram, Kala Bhavan, Biswa Bharati Museum , etc.

Next, we had our lunch in  the Hotel Ayojon . Then we went to the  Khoai boner hat , held every Saturday. 

We shopped for locally handmade items like sarees, dresses, clay ornament, metal jewellery, various Kantha stitch work on the garment, etc. The ‘Sonibarer haat’ is very popular. We returned to the hotel in the evening after almost completing the Bolpur Santiniketan tourist spots.

On the last day, we visited some unique places near Bolpur. First, we saw  Kalikapur Rajbari , which is 60 km approx from Bolpur. Next, we visit  Ghurisha , where you can find two terracotta temples, the oldest temple in the Birbhum district. Please note that we keep our first Toto in Ilambazar and take another for Ghurisha.

After, we visit  Wood Fossil Park . It is a newly created tourist destination. While returning, we saw  Raipur Rajbati  and  Surul Rajbari.  This day the Toto cost is 1000 rupees.

In the evening, we took the Kanchanjanga Express and returned to Sealdah. Our Shantiniketan from Kolkata completes here.

We miss some tourist spots in Shantiniketan like  Hetampur Rajbari ,  SABUJ BAN  or  Plant Museum ,  Joydeb Kenduli ,  Itonda ,  Fullora   Temple, etc .

1. Gitanjali Rail Museum

Gitanjali Rail Museum is about 3 kilometres from Viswa-Bharati premises and right next to Bolpur Station. It is the Indian Railways’ famous museum. This museum has very enriched information about Rabindranath Tagore and Viswa-Bharati.

This museum is full of unknown information and images of Rabindranath. You can see Rabindranath’s armchair and a table and find many histories of Rabindranath and Santiniketan on this large museum’s first floor.

Inside the walls are beautiful craftsmanship and fresco of Plaster of Paris. Here is the special Saloon Coach of the railways, by which Rabindranath left Santiniketan forever in July 1941.

2. Kankalitala Temple travel guide

Kankalitala is situated on the bank of the Kopai River of Birbhum. This place is one of the holy places in West Bengal. It’s the 51st “SATI PITH.” As per Hindu mythology. Sati maa’s waist fell here. Every Saturday, a huge crowd gathers for Kankali Maa’s puja.

3. Biswa Bangla hat

Biswa Bangla hat in Santiniketan is a new travel destination for tourists and shopping lovers. It is near PRANTIK station. Here, you get a wide range of handmade art and craft products, all unique in style. The product or art, like jute bags, painted umbrellas, hand-painted sarees, other tribal paintings, wooden and clay sculptures, etc., is mind-blowing.

4. Prakriti Bhavan Nature Art museum

Prakriti Bhavan Nature Art Museum is situated in the Ballavpur area and is the way to Amar Kutir. Here, you can see a fascinating collection of natural art and craft, all created naturally in a different place in India.

This museum is made with this natural craft. The craft is made of wood, metal, stone, etc.

5. Amar Kutir

Amar Kutir was founded by the freedom fighter Late Mr. Susen Mukhopadhyay in early 1923 with objectives envisaged by Rabindranath Tagore in his experiments in rural reconstruction at Sriniketan. It’s the must-visit place in my Santiniketan tour plan.

After, Amar Kutir Society for Rural Development (AKSRD) in 1978 as a self-supported voluntary organization for rural development. The society has been organizing training and production of traditional handicrafts in the district and now supports more than a thousand artisans with marketing, technical Improvement, and design development.

6. Amar Kutir ECO-Tourism Park

While in Amar Kutir, we visited Amar Kutir ECO-park, a walkable distance from Amar Kutir premises. You can have a beautiful evening in this wide area. The time is from 8 am to 5 pm, and the entry fee is 10 rupees. You can do boat riding in the surrounding pond for 20 rupees for 2 hours.

7. Srijani Shilpagram Shantiniketan Bolpur 

Srijani Shilpagram is a place that displays the homes, lifestyles, and handicrafts in the eastern and northeastern states of India. This place has been designed as a hub for rural artists to sell their clothes and handicrafts. A government initiative, Srijani Shilpagram, started in 2008. West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Sikkim, seven sisters in the northeast, and the  Port Blair and Andaman Nicobar Islands  are also represented.

8. Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary Bolpur Shantiniketan

Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary is locally known as the Bolpur deer park. Here you can see lots of deer. The entry ticket is just 10 rupees. Inside the Ballavpur deer park, you can see many deer walking here and there.

There, you can see a watchtower and climb to see almost the park’s total area. It is a large area for walking. You can take a long walk and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

9. Kopai River

Kopai River is also known as the Sal River. The tributary of Mayurakshi flows among cities like Santiniketan, Bolpur, Kankalitila, and Labpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal state of India. It is a small river in the dry season but an overflow in the monsoon season. Rabindranath Tagore sat on the bank of the Kopai River and wrote Amader Choto Nadi.

10. Visva Bharati Santiniketan

In 1863, Debendra Nath Tagore, the father of Rabindranath Tagore, founded this ashram in the northern part of Bolpur city for God-oriented and ritualistic worship. In 1901, Rabindranath established Brahma Vidyalaya in Santiniketan, which gradually became the University of Viswa Bharati University.

Rabindranath spent most of his life in the second half at Santiniketan Ashram. In the Shantiniketan premises, Rabindranath built many architectural buildings for the residence of himself and other Co-operators.

Later, this building became an important tourist spot by decorating various artists and sculptors of the ashram. In 1951, Viswa Bharati University got the Central University of India status.

Biswa Bharati is divided into two parts: Sriniketan and Santiniketan. Both places have many historical houses. They are:-

11. Visva Bharati Kala Bhavan

The Kala Bhavana compound is an extensive area of sculptures and other art objects in Santiniketan. Many of these are in the open air, created by the renowned sculpture artist Ramkinkar Baij.

I visited the Kala Bhavana compound for about 45 minutes to see these. Don’t miss “Kalo Bari” or “The Black House.” It looks like a primary school in a village.

Nandan Mela

The fair happens every year on the 3rd of December in Kala Bhavan Santiniketan before Poush Mela. The student celebrates the birth anniversary of Mr. Nandalal Bose with drama, Painting, and various cultural programs.

12. Rabindra Bhaban Museum 

The Rabindra Bhaban Museum is made up of 5 houses. The five houses’ name is Pratichi, Konark, Punocho, Raktakorobi, and Shyamoli. These are the names of his literature, which have named his houses. Rabindranath Tagore has spent a significant part of his life, and not only that, a lot of his great work has been produced here.

Rabindra Bhaban Museum has  40,000 books and 12,000 journals,  and they also preserved the poet’s photographs, memories, images, and objects. It is one of Santiniketan’s most exciting and must-visitable places, and photography is prohibited here.

Khoai boner hat, local people also called it Sonibarer hat. In this hat, Tribal people perform their unique traditional Santali dance with bits of Madol. Many people sell handmade products like sarees, dresses, clay ornaments, metal jewellery, various Kantha stitch work on the garment, etc.

Khoai boner Haat is usually held every Saturday (now Sunday), and the hat starts from 2 pm onwards and goes up to sunset.

14. Kalikapur Rajbari

Kalikapur rajbari was a very famous rajbari in Kalikapur village. It is 25 km from Bolpur and 5 km from Ilambazar. This rajbari has a Durga corridor and a terracotta Shiva temple beside the palace.

Today, this rajbari is tottering. These family members live in a part of the house. In the history of West Bengal, this house has a historical value. Include it on your Santiniketan tour plan.

15. Ghurisha Terracota temple

Ghurisha village is located less than 7 kilometres away from Ilambazar. Here, two old terracotta temples are the Charchala temple of Raghunathjee and the Nabaratna Gopal – Lakshmi-Janardan Temple. The ‘

Charchala temple’ of Raghunathjee is the oldest temple in Birbhum. Both temples were built in the middle of the eighteenth century. You should add this place when you travel to Bolpur.

16. Wood Fossil Park Birbhum

In 2015, archaeologists found some plants by digging soil in the small village of Amkhoi, which is in the Chawpahari jungle of Ilambazar, Bolpur. The woods are parts of the plants of thousands of years ago. After recovering many more wood fossils, the government created the park. It is open now.

17. Raipur Rajbari Birbhum

Raipur Zamindar Bari is near Bolpur, about 7 km from the Bolpur station. This house is 150 years old. Now, the house is almost ruined. Rabindranath’s family had a close relationship with the zamindar of Raipur. Rabindranath Tagore’s father bought land from the Raipur Zamindar to construct Biswa Bharati Ashram.

18. Surul Raj Bari

The Rajbari at Surul, Shantiniketan. The Surul rajbari is 275 years old. Surul village is near the Visva-Bharati University Sriniketan campus.

In the Surul village, a large number of Bagdis, Bauris, Haris and Doms, are live. The Sarkar family, who were Zamindars of Birbhum District, brought a group of Brahmins and other upper castes.

Surul, the Sarkar family, played an important role in the socio-economic development of the entire area and the establishment of a global organization of national importance. Durga Puja is very famous in the family of Surul Zamindar.

19. Sriniketan Bolpur

Sriniketan is another Biswa Bharati University campus situated on another site of Bolpur railway station. It has many schools and hostels inside the premises.

20. Santiniketan Poush Mela

In the year 1250, Bengali year 7th poush Debendranath took Brahma dharma with his 20 followers. Debendranath had thought about the  Bolpur Poush Mela  on that day. To fulfil his father’s desire, in 1302 Bengali year 1895, Rabindranath started the Paush festival. Initially, the fair was held on the grounds of Braha mandir or the Northern Kanchmadir area.

Later, when the fair area increased, it was held in the East Palli ground and known as Bhuban Danga Mela. It is not only the memories of Robi Thakur but it felt the importance of festivals in the cultural life of Bengal during the Poush festival. It started in December every year. Add this to your Santiniketan tour plan.

21. Basanta Utsab

Rabindranath Tagore introduced Basant Utsav, or the spring festival in Shantiniketan, to restore the joy of the Holi festival. Now, it is one of the prime festivals of Bengali culture.

Occasionally, the students of this university dress in yellow colour. University students and teachers jointly organize cultural events on the Mela ground. Remember that hotel rates are very high this time, so make a proper budget for your Santiniketan tour plan.

22. Joydev Kenduli Mela

You can visit Joydev Kenduli Mela, famous for Baul and Kirtan Mela in West Bengal. It happens in the Birbhum district. You can reach Bolpur and Durgapur both ways. See the video; you will get the complete guide.

23. Magh Mela Sriniketan 

The famous Magh Mela started in Bolpur Sriniketan and is now 97 years old. The date is the 6th to the 8th of February. The 7th of February is the fireworks day.

The fair is mainly for agricultural products, Santiniketan’s handmade products, and artists. This year, 125 stalls on the Mela ground. The speciality is there is no advertisement shown in the entire Mela ground.

Tips for Bolpur

• You can skip the 3rd-day Toto car fare; it will reduce your tour cost by up to 1000 rupees, but I suggest visiting there while you are in Bolpur.
• Several Toto car is available in Santiniketan, so there is no need to book a single Toto for your entire tour, which will cost almost double.
• Train fair 80 rupees per person. Whenever you book your e-ticket, always do IRCTC travel insurance . It will help you in the future.

How can I go to Shantiniketan?

The best way to reach Shantiniketan is by train. The nearest station is Bolpur.  The train is available from Howrah/ Sealdah station. Many buses reach Bolpur from Asansol/ Suri/Kolkata etc.

How to reach Shantiniketan from Kolkata by train 

Several trains from Sealdah and Howrah reach Bolpur station every day. Local trains are also available. Reach approx 3 hours from Kolkata. Bardhaman to Sealdah and Bardhaman to Bolpur frequent local train is available.

How to reach Santiniketan Bolpur from Kolkata by bus

1st option is to take a bus to Durgapur and reach the Panagarh Darjeeling crossing. From there, you will get a bus to Bolpur. (Durgapur to Bolpur direct buses are also available). 2nd option is to take a bus for Suri to get down to Ilambazar and reach Bolpur by Toto car or bus. 3rd option is suitable for a return to Kolkata. Come to Bardhaman by rail, reach the Bardhaman bus stand(5 km from the station), and get a bus for the esplanade. It’s a 2 hour 15 minutes journey.

How to reach Kolkata from Bolpur?

The departure time of Rampurhat Sealdah passengers from Bolpur Station was 14:24. Around 18:35, the train arrived at Sealdah railway station. It’s a good train from Bolpur Santiniketan to Kolkata. Or you can avail of the Maa Tara Express, Kanchanjunga Express (PT), Viswabharati Fast Passenger, etc. All reach Kolkata in around 3 hours.

Day 2 : Kolkata to Shantiniketan

In the morning after breakfast, we will leave to board the train to Shantiniketan. It was founded in 1901 by Noble Laureate Shri Rabindra Nath Tagore, who visualizes a perfect harmony of humanity with nature. Art gallery & museum are important to be seen. On arrival, our representative will transfer you to your hotel. Check in at the hotel and enjoy the delicious lunch. Thereafter, we will visit the Santal villages. The evening is free at leisure for shopping. An overnight stay at the hotel in Shantiniketan.

Day 3 : Shantiniketan to Kolkata

After breakfast in the morning, we will explore local area in Shantiniketan. We will be visiting the open air classes, Visva Bharti Campus, Rabindra museum, Deep Park, Amarkuthi, Kantalikota (a place of small temple but mythological interest). Later, we will board the train to Kolkata. On reaching Kolkata, get transferred to the hotel for a night stay.

Day 4 : Kolkata Departure:

Located about 155 kms from Kolkata, West Bengal, Shantiniketan is the destination you need to be at if you are looking for serenity, tribal village culture and the legacy of Rabindra Nath Tagore, the Noble laureate. Shantiniketan was established by Maharshi Devendra Nath Tagore around 1863, and later  his son Rabindranath Tagore who established a educational institution Brahmavidyalaya based on traditional Hindu education system which later became the Viswa Bharati university. Visva Bharati was declared to be a central university and an institute of national importance, in 1951.

Rabindra Bhavana, founded in 1942, just after the death of the poet, is the focal point of Visva Bharati. It has a museum, archives, library and other units. It houses a major part of Rabindranath's manuscripts, correspondence, paintings and sketches, 40,000 volumes of books and 12,000 volumes of bound journals, photographs and numerous items associated with the poet's life.

Monsoon and Winter: The best time to visit Shantiniketan is either during the monsoon or winter months, which is between July and February. Kasahara is a food place inside the Sangeet Bhavan of Visva Bharati which is rather famous for its choices for lunches ranging from Bengali to Chinese cuisine. This café was established by Debojit Roy in the year 2015 in honor of the Japanese artist, Kim Taro Kasahara, who is known for his immense contribution to Shantiniketan. Tanzil and Pyala café is one happening place for evening hangouts in Bolpur. It is a boutique cum café. The café offers Bengali snacks ranging from ghugni to chicken chop and egg chop along with steaming cups of tea or coffee.

1. Bishnupur: A quaint town in Bankura district of Indian state of West Bengal, Bishnupur is the land of terracotta Temples, School of Hindustani Music and Baluchari Sarees. The town’s unique architecture developed along with its art, music and handicrafts including pottery and weaving. The town prospered under the reign of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty and is considered to be the only destination for the most brilliant terracotta work in the whole of Eastern India which continues to prevail. The terracotta works on the tiles depict stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. 2. Nabadwip: Located on the western banks of Hooghly River, in the Nadia district in West Bengal, 76 kilometres from Shantiniketan, Nabadwip is the holy birth city of the great Vaishnava Saint of Bhakti movement, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is believed to have been founded in 1608 CE and was the old capital of the Sena dynasty between 1159 to 1206, during the reigns of Ballal Sen and Lakshman Sen. The city is famous for its Raas Utsav (Raas Festival). With moderate summers and winters, the weather of Nabadwip is otherwise pleasant. 3. Bardhaman / Burdwan: At a distance of 53 kilometres from Shantiniketan, Bardhaman is a district famous for the Maithon Dam reservoir located in Asansol, Meghnad Saha Planetarium, Burdwan Science Centre and Krishnasayer Ecological Park. 4. Durgapur: Famously called the ‘Steel Capital of East India’, Durgapur is a city in West Burdwan district in the Indian State of West Bengal by the banks of River Damodar, which is also known as ‘Sorrow of Bengal’. Situated at a distance of 200 kilometres from Kolkata, taking a train from the Howrah Junction Railway station is the best way to reach Shantiniketan if you are arriving via train. The nearest Railway Station to Shantiniketan is in Bolpur. De-board at Bolpur station and hire a local transport to reach Shantiniketan. The best way to travel to Shantiniketan is by road as it is connected with all cities via road. Taxis and buses are available all year round. Shantiniketan (Abode of Peace) was established by Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, father of Rabindranath Tagore, the great writer, poet, songwriter and educationalist of his time and India’s first Nobel Laureate. He also happened to be one of the prominent members of Bengali Renaissance.

Shantiniketan is one of the best gifts given to people of India by Rabindranath Tagore. It was the year 1901 and Rabindranath opened a school in Shantiniketan which would later go on to become the nucleus of Bengali culture and art and would become one of the most renowned universities in the world.

The Visva- Bharati University at Shantiniketan founded in the year 1921, is the epitome of revolutionary tradition of breaking barriers of all kinds, be it castes, religions, class, creed, genders, cultures with principal focus on humanities, arts, and contact with nature.

Even today, Shantiniketan follows Tagore’s principles of equality. It houses a little over 10,000 students in its campuses who comprise Indian and international students within a co-educational facility. The trend of Gurukul (open air classes) is still practised under the campus trees.

Shantiniketan is also famous for its many festivals. Some of them include the grand Poush Utsav (fest) celebrated on the Foundation Day of the University. The Basant Utsav is celebrated on Holi. Students make artworks and display them during the Nandan Mela, and attempt to sell them during the fest. Initially, the Nandan Mela had started as a fund-raising event to raise money for covering medical needs of poor students.

Other festivals which are celebrated with equal pomp and zest in Shantiniketan are the Sarad Utsav (Autumn Festival), Maghotsav (Magh Utsav - Founding Day of the Sriniketan campus) and Vrikhsharopan Utsav (Tree Planting Festival).

The tourist footfall in Shantiniketan is numbered to be way above 2 million per year.

Location of Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan is located at around 200 kilometres northwest of the city of Kolkata in the rural Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal.

History of Shantiniketan

Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, the father of Rabindranath Tagore took a 20-acre land in 1863, on permanent lease from the talukdar of Raipur in Birbhum district of West Bengal. It is during the same time that Debendranath had founded the Brahmo Samaj. He built a small guest house on the land and started calling it Shantiniketan, which literally translates to ‘Abode of Peace’ due to its location. With time, as people started visiting the guest house, it gained popularity and the entire area came to be known as Shantiniketan.

A trivial fact about Shantiniketan and the land purchased is that it was illegally occupied by a gang of local dacoits long before Debendranath had purchased it. The place was known as Bhubhandanga after the zamindar of Bolpur, Bhubhan Mohan Sinha. However, as time passed the gang made peace with Debendranath and worked hand in hand with him to develop Shantiniketan.

Rabindranath was 12 years old when he had first visited Shantiniketan and instantly fell in love with the aura of the place. It became his go to place to write poems and work on arts and literature. The year was 1873 and there was no going back after that.

After his father decided to dedicate the entire property for establishing a Brahma- Vidyalaya in 1888, Rabindranath started a school and named it Brahmacharya ashram in 1901, which was later named as Patha Bhavna in 1925. He started it with the vision of following a system of Gurukul (residential school where both teachers and students lived together).

Rabindranath used all his prize money from his Nobel win to expand his school and established Visva Bharati in 1921. Rabindranath reached out to people within his network and explained the teaching model of Visva Bharati and asked for their help to set up an environment of cultural exchange programs. He encouraged artists from all walks of life to set up residence in Shantiniketan and help promote and revive folk arts, dances, Indian classical dance forms such as Manipuri, Kathak and Kathakali, by teaching the students.

Eventually, in 1951, Visva Bharati was recognised as a central university and an institute of national importance.

Places to visit and Things to do in Shantiniketan

1. Tagore’s Ashram : The Ashram complex is the oldest area of Shantiniketan where Maharshi Debendranath Tagore had built Shantiniketan Griha, the first guest house. Being a heritage site, it is very well preserved.

The ashram complex houses quite a few buildings which include Path Bhavan with beautiful frescoes on the walls which were done by Nandalal Bose. The Natun Bari (New home) built in 1902, Kalo bari (Black home) is a mud structure built with a mix of coal tar. Other houses are namely, Dehali, Santoshalaya, Singha Sadan, Dwijaviram, Dinantika, Taladwaj, Chaitya, Ghantatala, Panthasala, Ratan Kuthi, Malancha and others – each house has a backstory to tell with a perfect historic relevance.

2. Rabindra Bhaban Museum or Tagore Museum : The Rabindra Bhaban Museum was founded just after the death of Rabindranath Tagore in 1942. Until a few years back, the focal point of the museum was the original Nobel Prize medallion of Rabindranath Tagore. However, the medallion was stolen due to lax in security which made the staff extra vigilant after the incident.

Tagore’s personal belongings are displayed in the museum along with the family genealogy. Some most intriguing artefacts include Rabindranath’s passport which is just in the form of a letter. His meetings with prominent figures of the renaissance era are documented clearly. This includes his meetings with Hellen Keller, Nehru, Bose, Bernard Shaw, Einstein, Freud, Gandhi and others.

3. Vishwa Bharati University : Established with the principal motto and objective to explore arts, humanities, language, music, dance and folk arts, Visva Bharati’s focal point is to create oneness in diversity. This makes the university campus the most important place in Shantiniketan.

The university campus houses institutes specializing in different departments and are named accordingly such as, Cheena Bhavana, Hindi Bhavana, Kala Bhavana, Sangit Bhavana, Bhasa Bhavana, Nippon Bhavana, Bangladesh Bhavana and others. Some of the famous alumni of Visva Bharati include internationally acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi and Maharani Gayatri Devi.

4. Uttarayan Complex : Located in the northern part of Shantiniketan, the Uttarayan complex is a collection of five houses built by Rabindranath Tagore during his lifetime. Each home has a name, Udayana, Konark, Shyamali, Punascha, and Udichi. The entire complex was well planned by Tagore himself.

Out of these houses, Shyamali was an experimental home and its visual perspective was based on Barabudur style. The paintings on the outside wall of Shyamali were done by students of Kala Bhavan, guided by famous Nanda Lal Bose, the pioneer of Modern Indian Art. Ramkinkar Baij, an Indian sculptor and painter worked on the santhals on either side of the main door of Shyamali. One of the prominent guests who stayed in Shyamali were Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi.

Udayana is the impressive of all houses and is meant for residence of important guests who visit Shantiniketan.

The latest addition to the Uttarayan complex is the Guha Ghar, a museum started as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore.

5. Upasana Griha : Upasana Griha or the Prayer Hall is one of the stunning buildings in the entire Shantiniketan area. Its walls are built from Belgian glass and is also known as deity less Glass Temple.

6. Kala Bhavan : One of the most beautifully designed blocks within the Visva Bharati University premises is the Kala Bhavan. As the name suggests, it gives precedence to art and the students who have designed the building are students of fine art developing their flare for art.

7. China Bhavan : The academic blocks within the vicinity of Visva Bharati University Complex are named in accordance with the purpose, culture and subject being taught there. As the name suggests, China Bhavan is the centre for art, culture, traditions and language of China. The instructions are given to people having their expertise in Chinese.

8. Nippon Bhavan : Like China Bhavan, the Nippon Bhavan is dedicated to Japanese culture, literature, art, language and tradition. There are exchange programs also conducted to and from Japan. Through this, Visva Bharati University aims to forge Indo- Japanese relations. However, the University itself doesn’t hold any control and the block operates as an autonomous body.

9. Chhatimtala : The site of Chhatimtala is considered to be sacred and is of great importance to everyone at Shantiniketan. The place was used by Maharshi Debendranath, father of Rabindranath Tagore for his meditation. A scholar himself, he highly recommended meditation to deal with the stress and also to introspect.

10. Amar Kutir : Amar Kutir is a society for rural development located very near to the university complex and displays local artefacts and handicrafts such as the famous Shantiniketan designer batik style leather bags and clothes. One can also visit the Batik factory to see the process of printing and coloring batik on clothes.

In addition to leather bags and Batik clothes, other souvenirs that one can buy from Amar Kutir are garments, linen, Dhokra art, coconut shell jewelry.

11. Kopai River : A tributary to Bakreswar River, the Kopai river is also called as the Sal River and flows through Bolpur, Shantiniketan, Kankalitala, Kirnahar and Labhpur villages of Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

12. Kankalitala Temple : At a distance of 7 kilometres from Shantiniketan lies Kankalitala, and a drive to this quaint village takes you through lush green fields and beautiful landscape. The Kankalitala temple in the vicinity of the village, is considered very sacred by the villagers. One should take a walk through the village to get a glimpse of the local way of life here.

13. Srijani Shilpa Gram Complex : The Srijani Shilpa Gram complex is a massive housing complex with replicas of house structures from Eastern and North Eastern states of the country. The replicas are beautifully decorated with colourful wall murals, and are developed and maintained by Eastern Zone Cultural Centre (EZCC).

14. Buddha Vihar : The Buddha Vihar is relatively new and the giant white Buddha statue piques everyone’s interest in visiting the place at least for once.

15. Khoai Shanibarer Haat : The Khoai Shanibarer Haat (local Saturday market) at Sonajhuri is a must explore place if you are there in Shantiniketan on a Saturday. The makeshift market is set up amidst Saal forest and becomes colorful as the day progresses. There are baul songs being performed by singers, tribals dance to the beats of baul dhols.

The traders come from nearby villages of Sainthia, Ahmadpur and other villages to sell their goods. There are local sarees, other clothing, and accessories on the offer. Apart from clothing and accessories, there are art pieces made by local artisans on display along with handicrafts and handlooms and they can be purchased at very cheap prices.

16. Deer Park Shantiniketan : At a distance of 3 kilometers from University campus lies the Ballavpur forest. It is here that a large family of deer reside in harmony with the nearby human population. A visit to the deer park is worth it when one is around Bolpur and Shantiniketan.

One can visit the Vishva Bharati University in Shantiniketan from 9 am to 5 pm on all days of the week. There is no entry fee to visit the campus.

Monsoon and Winter : The best time to visit Shantiniketan is either during the monsoon or winter months, which is between July and February. This is due to the comparatively pleasant and cool weather one gets to enjoy during these months as opposed to the high temperatures during spring and summers. Also, one gets to attend the many fairs held during this time. The rainfall is moderate here with light showers and overcast in Shantiniketan except for the days when there is heavy rainfall. 1. Bishnupur : A quaint town in Bankura district of Indian state of West Bengal, Bishnupur is the land of terracotta Temples, School of Hindustani Music and Baluchari Sarees. The town’s unique architecture developed along with its art, music and handicrafts including pottery and weaving.

The town prospered under the reign of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty and is considered to be the only destination for the most brilliant terracotta work in the whole of Eastern India which continues to prevail. The terracotta works on the tiles depict stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

2. Nabadwip : Located on the western banks of Hooghly River, in the Nadia district in West Bengal, 76 kilometres from Shantiniketan, Nabadwip is the holy birth city of the great Vaishnava Saint of Bhakti movement, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is believed to have been founded in 1608 CE and was the old capital of the Sena dynasty between 1159 to 1206, during the reigns of Ballal Sen and Lakshman Sen. The city is famous for its Raas Utsav (Raas Festival). With moderate summers and winters, the weather of Nabadwip is otherwise pleasant.

3. Bardhaman / Burdwan : At a distance of 53 kilometres from Shantiniketan, Bardhaman is a district famous for the Maithon Dam reservoir located in Asansol, Meghnad Saha Planetarium, Burdwan Science Centre and Krishnasayer Ecological Park.

Durgapur : Famously called the ‘Steel Capital of East India’, Durgapur is a city in West Burdwan district in the Indian State of West Bengal by the banks of River Damodar, which is also known as ‘Sorrow of Bengal’.
