Movistar’s Matteo Jorgenson collected his first general classification victory as he held on to win the Tour of Oman by one second on Wednesday. The 23-year-old American, who took his first stage win on Monday, went into the 95 mile final stage, which ended with a 3 mile climb up Jabal Al Akhdhar, the Green Mountain, with a five-second lead over UAE’s Diego Ulissi and Quick-Step’s Mauri Vansevenant. Vansevenant, a Belgian, won the stage but Jorgensen finished on his wheels to take second on the day. With his victory – the second of his career with the pros – the 23-year-old Vansevenant pocketed 10 bonus seconds. Jorgensen took six for second place, enough to secure the victory.

“This is super, special,” said Jorgensen.

“Two days ago, I got my first professional win and now to take my first GC at a race like this, I’m just so happy.

“My goal for this season was to win one race and it has been the last two years and now we’ve just won two. You have no idea how good it feels.”

AG2R’s French rider Geoffrey Bouchard completed the podium, 12 seconds behind the winner, after taking third on the stage.

Additionally, we may utilize precise geolocation data and identification through device scanning.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Tour of Oman stage 5: Jan Hirt wins on Green Mountain, takes race lead

Fausto masnada slips down to second overall after jan hirt distances him inside final kilometers of 'queen stage.'.

Jan Hirt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) won the queen stage of the Tour of Oman and took over the race lead with a solo attack on the summit finish of Green Mountain.

Hirt, who started the day in third place overall at nearly a minute down, launched his stage-winning attack with about a kilometer to go. His team had set him up perfectly, setting a tough pace at the bottom of the ascent to reduce the bunch to some 15 riders.

Race-leader Fausto Masnada (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was part of that selection but found himself distanced before Hirt made his move, and it was ultimately a race of damage limitation for the Italian.

Masnada finished almost two minutes behind the Intermarché rider and slipped down to second overall, one minute back on Hirt.

A solid performance from Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) saw him climb two spots into third at 1:16 with both Elie Gesbert (Arkéa-Samsic) and Anthon Charmig (Uno-X) sitting just two seconds behind him with one stage remaining.

🏆 Strong teamwork, strong solo effort, strong win for @HirtJan and @IntermarcheWG today! #TourofOman pic.twitter.com/TNQdCPJVNn — Tour of Oman (@tourofoman) February 14, 2022

The summit finish to Green Mountain has long defined the battle for the overall classification at the Tour of Oman and 2022 would be no different. Masnada started the day in the leader’s red jersey after his solo attack on stage 4, which sent him soaring to the top of the standings.

His Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl squad manned the front of the bunch for much of the day, allowing a group of six riders to form a breakaway in the opening 10 kilometers. Though the break had gone, there was still some tension in the bunch as a fast tailwind turned into a crosswind.

The peloton had to battle the windy conditions throughout and splits did eventually begin to form with Charmig getting pushed into a second group and forced to chase. The Danish rider was one of several to come down in a crash, as was Mark Cavendish, but both were able to get back on and continue the stage.

After a lot of work, the two major splits came back together with just over 40 kilometers remaining.

Quick-Step led the bunch toward the foot of the final climb but as the already diminished group hit the bottom of Green Mountain, a push from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert squad saw it further reduced to about 15 riders.

Masnada hung on for as long as he could, but he was already distanced when Hirt put the pain on with just about a kilometer to go.

Charmig, who has been on a run of form of late, was also left to watch the Czech rider sail up the road as he tried to find his own pace behind.

There was no catching Hirt and he pedaled his way to the stage win and the overall race lead with a sprint stage remaining.

2023 Tour of Oman Stage 5 Preview

Samail > Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain) 152.4km

tour of oman stage 5

Time for the Green Mountain. With the GC position finely balanced, the final stage could get a little tactical. First of all, everyone’s got to get to the foot of the climb in the peloton.

Hot and there’s a little bit of wind around. In previous years, we have seen splits on the road to the climb, teams will need to be wary and not expect to simply roll to the foot of the Green Mountain.

Steep! Head down, full gas, block out the pain.

It’s about 18 minutes of pain. Previous winners are a mix of styles, we’ve had pure climbers like Froome, Nibali and López, but we’ve also seen Lutsenko smash up this climb. Last year, Jan Hirt won by a mile, but does he have the form to do it again this time round?

We have a few pure climbers at the race, but most have already lost some time on GC. Will this buy them some freedom? Movistar have a strong team to support Jorgenson, they’ll expect Sosa, González, and Verona to support him until the final kilometre. If a rider further down on the GC attacks, there’s no need for the team to chase, that is up to the others. Bora could be a team with numbers, but they are likely to go all in for Uijtdebroeks, I don’t think Buchmann will be allowed to chase the win.

Currently, there’s 22 riders within 1 minute of Jorgenson, but some of them will fade on the climb. In the top 10 I can see a couple of pure climbers who’ll fancy their chances of putting the American under pressure on the climb. The issue they’ll have is the form of Matteo, it’s not going to be easy to drop him, he’s riding out of his skin just now.

Okay, I’m expecting Bora to be the team to set the pace on the climb, teeing up an attack from Uijtdebroeks, but with Movistar likely to still have a few in the group, this move should be chased down by a domestique, meaning Jorgenson is still riding “easy”. When this attack is brought back, it’s when the stage win is up for grabs. A rider more than 1 minute down will get some freedom, if the move is timed well, it could take the win. Jorgenson would love another stage win, but the GC is the ultimate goal.

Matteo Jorgenson  – I remember back to last year’s Tour de France, he was amazing. That was his first Tour, and we are already seeing the difference it’s made to his legs. I’ve always had Matteo down as a classics rider, Movistar have always been keen on him being a GC rider, I’m starting to think they might know more than me! You might look at his body shape and think he doesn’t stand a chance on the Green Mountain, but forget about all that, we’re talking about an 18-minute effort, full gas. With teammates to help cover moves, he’s in a strong position to win GC. He’s been the strongest rider this week, and I don’t expect that to change.

Mauri Vansevenant  – the Green Mountain will likely be too hard for him, but not by much. The Belgian is a fighter, he’ll hang tough and try to surprise. It is possible for a rider like him to do well on this climb, especially if it’s an easy day beforehand.

Geoffrey Bouchard  – after finishing 3 rd  on Monday, he’ll have high hopes of challenging for stage and GC. He fits into the pure climber category, he’ll hope the steep slopes of the Green Mountain prove too much for Jorgenson and Vansevenant, and he can steal in for the stage and GC win.

Rein Taaramäe  – same as Bouchard.

Cian Uijtdebroeks  – I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do on this climb. The kid is still on 19, he turns 20 later this month, but he’s ready to challenge the older riders for the win. 5 th  place on Monday was a great result for him, and considering this climb should suit him better, he’s going to be one of the riders challenging for the win.

Alexey Lutsenko  – he’s not been at his best in this race, but he’s not been that far away. It could be a similar story in this stage, good but not good enough. Today was encouraging, that was a big attack he threw in, forcing Jorgenson into chasing. He knows this climb, he knows he can win here, I expect a strong showing from him.

Cristián Rodríguez  – a solid climber, I think 5 th -10 th  for him.

Jan Hirt  – he’s not looking at his best, his bigger targets are later in the year.

Louis Meintjes  – it should be a climb he goes well on. He likes riding in hot conditions, but he’s already lost 40 seconds on GC. The other climbs in the race haven’t been his usual style, this is the one he’s been looking forward to. His gap on GC could buy him a little freedom, but not too much. If he’s going to win, he’ll have to do it the hard way.

Davide Formolo  – 1:17 down on GC, that’s enough to get some freedom. After performing well in the Saudi Tour, Formolo will hope to be one of the best on this climb. He’ll attack from distance and see if he can get the stage win but winning the GC won’t be possible.

Prediction Time

Stage win for Alexey Lutsenko , GC win for Matteo Jorgenson.

PREVIEW | Tour of Oman 2023 stage 5 - Queen stage to Green Mountain to decide overall classification

From the 11th to the 15th of February racing will resume in the Middle East, with the traditional Tour of Oman bringing an interesting set of stages that will suit sprinters, climbers and classics riders simultaneously. Stage 5 will be the queen stage which will decide the overall classification, as the riders head towards the famous Green Mountain.

Finally, the queen stage. Jabal Al Akhdhar, or as it's more commonly known the 'green mountain', is 5.7 kilometers at 10.5% and will mark the end of the Tour of Oman. It is an almost completely pan-flat day but the final climb is a brute. On wide desert roads, the inconsistent final climb is know for generating massive gaps, and it will decide the overall classification.

Diego Ulissi takes stage 4 of Tour of Oman in a very disputed sprint finish

The 2024 Tour of Oman is the 13th running of this early season warm weather stage race through the deserts of the Gulf state. With three of the five stages finishing on an upward gradient it favours the climbers but there are also opportunities for the sprinters, so expect a thrilling race.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch a 2024 Tour of Oman live stream from anywhere with a VPN .

The 13th Tour of Oman kicks off on Saturday, February 10 for five stages of racing under the warm desert sun. While some riders will see it as a chance to get quality miles in their legs in good conditions, many will be chomping at the bit to put in a strong performance and get their year off to a good start.

Looking at the stage profiles, three of the five days finish on uphill gradients, but it’s only the final stage to Green Mountain that's really for the pure climbers. It's here that the favourites for the overall win will have to be at their best and top of this list are Adam Yates and Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), Louis Meintjes (Intermarché - Wanty) and Warren Barguil (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL).

The race starts with a stage for the pure sprinters — the likes of Fabio Jakobsen, Bryan Coquard, Alexander Kristoff and Caleb Ewan — but after this they start to favor climbers or the sprinters who can climb a bit. Stage two finishes with a 2.6 kilometre 7% climb, stage three the 4.6 kilometre 8.5% climb up Eastern Mountain, then the big finale on the final stage. As is the case every year, the now infamous Green mountain, with its brutal 10% slopes, lies in wait to decide who will win.

Just like the previous day, stage four of the race was again shortened due to adverse weather and the riders ended up facing only 104 kilometres in the Yitti Hills. Awaiting at the finish was an uphill sprint but before that a couple of killer climbs to cross including the 3 kilometre 10% incline of Al Jabal Road. This destroyed the chances of the pure sprinters leaving a reduced bunch of lighter men to fight out the finale.

At the end it was the Belgian Amaury Capiot (Arkéa-B&B Hôtels) who took the win from Ide Schelling (Astana Qazaqstan) and Davide De Pretto (Jayco AlUla).

With one stage left to race and the finish up Green Mountain looming the overall classification is finally poised with Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) now in the red jersey just three seconds ahead of Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step).

Hopefully the weather will ease so the race can get the finish everyone wants to see.

Tour of Turkey: Tobias Lund Andresen wins stage 5 to retain overall lead

Fabio Jakobsen takes second behind DSM-Firmenich-PostNL teammate

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) took back-to-back wins at the Tour of Turkey after navigating the technical finale on stage 5 and powering to the line ahead of teammate Fabio Jakobsen.

The Dane timed his sprint perfectly, only hitting the front in the final 50 metres after the narrow, winding finish left the leadout trains fractured heading into Kuşadası.

Jakobsen was able to sit up and celebrate his teammate's win as they crossed the line for a great 1-2 finish ahead of Iúri Leitão (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA). It’s the Dutch team’s third win of the week and Lund Andresen’s second at professional level after his maiden victory yesterday.

Andresen also extended his lead at the head of the GC with more bonus seconds gained on the line. He takes a 14-second lead over Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) heading into tomorrow’s summit finish stage from Kuşadası to Manisa where the overall standings will be completely changed and the climbers will take over.

“It’s unbelievable man. We were going for Fabio but he told me with 2km to go that I should just go with my own sprint,” a delighted Andresen said post-race.

“I had to open up early and it came so much as a shock that I almost forgot to celebrate. Then it's just incredible, I go over the finish line and I see Fabio come around me for second place.

“The whole team did amazing and we did amazing as planned. It just shows a new class to this team how we rode today.”

The fifth day of racing in Turkey saw a seven-man break again go up the road with 156km to go, Antonio Polga (Novo Nordisk), Mauro Verwilt (Tarteletto-Isorex), Oliver Mattheis (BIKE AID), Jacob Scott (REMBE Pro Cycling Team Sauerland), Genki Yamamoto (Kinan Racing), Michał Pomorski and Konrad Czabok (Mazowsze Serce Polski).

A more simple chase ensued for the peloton than on the previous stages with Bora-Hansgrohe and Astana Qazaqstan taking up most of the mantle along the 177.9km route from Bodrum to Kuşadası.

While the gap gradually came down throughout the mainly flat route, the break attacked itself over one of the final uncategorised climbs as riders tried to be the last men standing from the early move, but without much success.

Mattheis was the most active and last to be dragged back with 5km to go. Polti-Kometa put on the pace on each and every rise to try and dull the legs of pure sprinters Welsford, Cavendish and Jakobsen and give stage 3 winner Giovanni Lonardi the best chance.

A late attack was launched curiously by Danny van Poppel for Bora-Hansgrohe as they entered the very technical finishing sector where twists and turns strung out the peloton. But he was quickly pegged back by Bram Welten (DSM-Firmenich PostNL).

Andresen was originally on Welten’s wheel as he chased down the Dutchman but dropped himself back into the bunch to ensure he didn’t sprint too early. He stayed in the wheels until Rory Townsend (Q36.5) and Martijn Budding (TDT-Unibet) hit out for the line before he opened up behind.

With shoulders barging and the road narrowing at the front, the Dane stayed patient and eventually found a lane to sprint before speeding past a tiring Van Poppel and Budding with Jakobsen in his wheel.
