Before You Go
- To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
- Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
- Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
- If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Top 5 airlines serving from Ontario to Europe
My seat was changed at the last minute and I was moved to the last row, right next to the bathroom despite selecting my seat well in advance. I was also made to check my carry on due to space but when I got on the plane there was significant empty overhead space. Picking up my carry on from the luggage carousel added time to my trip which had already been extended due to delay.
There was plenty of overhead room but half of the passengers were told they had to check their carryon bags. My partner and I checked in as early as possible and our seats were split across the aisle.
Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!
There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.
I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.
The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!
Plane was late because of a mechanical malfunction and the food listed as available was not. Flight attendants seem over worked and under paid. They just done seem happy. And that can be seen in their faces.
Waited 3 hours on a plane to de-ice due to manpower issues. Waited another hour and a half once we landed because of a gate issue. Missed my connections. Created. A total of 13 hours of delay.
Great, on time departure, friendly and accommodating crew, great leg room, Smith flight
Plane was turned around due to fog half way into the flight, Delta did not properly direct passengers to stay on same flight and instead failed to properly rebook on Alaska
Flight delayed yet again. Crew apathetic and unhelpful re affect on connecting flight.
I think Virgin is one of the best flying experiences, especially from/to the UK. The staff are so helpful and fun, the food is good, seats comfortable, goof entertainment and great value. Check in and boarding is pretty pain free. I also find that the other passengers are generally so kind and considerate than when I've flown other airlines.
Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl
Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .
My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.
Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.
The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good
Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks
Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.
We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.
We were traveling as a family of 5 and they refused to seat us together. There were entire rows open, and my 13 year old daughter had to sit alone. Ridiculous!
Very poor the plane itself was really old, slight smell that couldn’t be named. I didn’t even get a boarding pass UNTIL AFTER clearing security! Even then, they said when I get to my connected flight I’ll get my 2nd boarding pass there! A bit ridiculous!
Great checkin experience and flight crew were very friendly and helpful
Our flight was delayed several times. It left 9 hours after scheduling. We had to sleep in the airport.
This flight was 2.5 hours delayed due to crew issues. This meant that we arrived after 2 AM. Very very inconvenient and we were not really kept well informed.
My flight was delayed for a whole day, so I lost a day of my vacation.
Staff did not care, and very clearly did not want to be serving passengers. Requests were ignored repeatedly. Toilets filthy. Bins were just trash bags hung around the place that were never emptied. It was a challenge to even get a glass of water on a 14 hour flight.
Flight was delayed by an hour and We had to rush and run so we will make it to our connecting flight! And then when we reached Naples, Italy , our luggages were all DELAYED!!! It was a real inconvenience to us!!
Everyone on board was great. It was just super late and we missed our connection in Frankfurt, and had to power through jet lag while we waited 4 hours in the terminal. My family missed a big welcome dinner in Berlin.
United is today and old, the planes, the staff, the business processes. Yet they expect premium prices for a less than average flight experience. I should have remembered to stay away from them and will remember to stay away from them in the future since I'm traveling a lot again. In a nutshell, they suck eggs.
Newer Aircraft have more amenities, but the JAL flight crew and ground staff are top tier and provided the best customer experience I've ever had on a flight!
This is a new route from Philadelphia to Naples. It was sold out. The team on board was excellent. I’ve flown this route twice this year and the flight has been excellent. I hope American keeps the route.
I did not enjoy continuously being lied to about the amount of time we would circle Chicago before deciding to redirect to Milwaukee. Then the amount of time we would sit on the ground in Milwaukee waiting for gas, or to take off again. Or the amount of time it would then take to get to Chicago again, or sit on the runway waiting for a gate. The whole time continuously hopefully we would make our connecting flight that kept getting delayed as well. Only to scramble and miss it. Enough with the BS. Tell me the truth. "Sorry, things are backed up and your probably not going to make your flight. You should rebook on the next flight now rather than wait." You'll never hear those words from an airline. Speaking of which. If the flight has been redirected and/or is seriously delayed, how about making the WiFi free for everyone so they get to rebooking and reserving hotel rooms while still in the air. You've inconvenienced me already and now you want me to pay $20 for Internet so I can try to make other plans. Absolutely disgusting!
Excellent. Attendants served preflight drinks and were courteous and nice.
It was great! It’s been awhile since I’ve flown American but this most recent experience reminded me how much I enjoy flying American. Organized. Informative. Efficient. Friendly. Can’t ask for much more, except my luggage got dinged up a bit. But that could have been the airport.
It was the worst experience ever. Cabin temperature cold, for which they did not have any blankets upon my asking. We paid $125 extra for each passenger to get extra space sits; the sits were ridiculously small, tight, and uncomfortable! The flight attendant dropped ice on me and my sister! All in all, American Airlines deserves below zero!
The flight was delayed two hours, with no information as to why. The gate also changed several times which was aggravating. Would not fly through DFW again.
not enough crew for business class and not great service as a result. underwhelmed overall
The inability to be flexible when you need to change a Basic Economy flight, when your company demands you book through a third party, causes raw feelings about the whole experience. A major airline should realize business and personal plans change all the time. I must save my company money on travel. Even if you have to charge me for the change, I get it. But being so rigid with a policy is not the best customer service.
WiFi was down so no entertainment and I could not work either. The flight was Very turbulent at the end (the last 20 min felt like an eternity) I appreciated the pilot for getting us there safely. The flight attending in first class was kind and attentive to everyone.
Staff should be polite and not rude when they speak with passengers.
Boarding at London was poorly done. We really enjoyed both flights with amazing crews. Looking forward for next flights
The team/crew were excellent. The USB ports were not working/broken, I tried multiple ports and also asked a staff member to check other ports on the flight, she confirmed they were not working!
Pilots seemed fine but one stewardess seemed crabby, but it was tolerable just didn't seem to be projecting a service attitude. I understand we all have those days. Return flight on 8/8/24 noticeable better / normal.
Our original flight booked in First Class was delayed to the point we would make our connection at DFW so AA rebooked us on an earlier flight in Coach. No mention of giving us credit for the difference in cabin class.
Seats were uncomfortable and food was not good. But we got to our destination.
They ran out of earphones so my 3rd daughter couldn’t use the on board entertainment the entire flight. They also ran out of food choices (chicken or cheese) by the time they got to the last few rows, so my oldest daughter, wasn’t given a choice. Luckily she isn’t a vegetarian because they only had chicken left.
Wow I fly a lot and BA are probably the best major airline to fly with
First leg delay, rescheduled second leg without our approval, cancelled rescheduled second leg, rescheduled cancelled leg to three days later...
Flight was 2.5 hours late. Could not have made the connection in London, but later found out it had been cancelled. Getting reticketed in London for the flight to Geneva went well after I figured out what to do.

Europe Flights Information
Frequently asked questions.
- Before locking in your flight, check if any travel restrictions or bans apply — in both your origin and destination. Get the latest updates by checking government websites.
- When you pass through airport screening, do not remove your face mask. You will be asked to lower it briefly to verify your identity. Travelers who refuse to wear a face mask may face civil penalties and may also be denied boarding.
- Avoid handing your boarding pass (paper or electronic) directly to a TSA officer. Rather, position the pass on the scanner and then hold it up for inspection.
- TSA is now allowing passengers to take one container of hand sanitizer, up to 12 oz (350 ml) in size, in carry-on luggage. This will need to be removed from your bag for scanning.
- Empty your personal items from your pocket, like your wallet, coins and keys, and place them in your carry-on rather than into bins. This will reduce handling during the screening process.
- If you’re bringing food on the plane with you, put it in a clear plastic bag and then into a scanning bin. This reduces the likelihood that a TSA officer will need to handle your food container or carry-on bag for closer inspection.
- As Europe’s leading city, London is full to the brim with things to do and see. Begin your adventure here and tick off attractions like Buckingham Palace, eat your way around its cafés and restaurants and acquaint yourself with the history of this destination. That’s the just start.
- Of course, you’ll need to know what the weather will be up to before you pack for your break. London has an oceanic climate, but look up the local forecast so you have an idea of what to expect. Also take into account how long you’re staying and what activities you plan to do.

Toronto's Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is Canada's main gateway to Europe, mainly due to Toronto being the country's largest city, its relatively close proximity in Canada's central/east, as well as its designation as an Air Canada hub for international flights.
Canada's national airline, Air Canada (as well as its Star Alliance partners), operate into and out of Terminal 1. That is also where you'll find Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounge. Canada's two largest leisure airlines servicing European destinations, WestJet and Air Transat , both use Terminal 3.
Apart from a single daily daytime Air Canada flight to London, England, all flights to Europe depart in the evenings, travel overnight and arrive into Europe the next morning, local time.
Flying time from Toronto to London is 7 hours, 7.5hrs to Paris, 8.5hrs to Rome and 11.5hrs to Athens.
From Toronto, direct and non-stop service can easily be found on a variety of airlines, both Canadian and European, to many European destinations. Both scheduled and charter service is available, often running daily in the peak travel months of summer and decreasing in the winter months.
Of course there are the staples, like London , Paris and Rome , but Barcelona , Amsterdam, Athens and Lisbon are all perennial favourites too, as are Iceland's Reykjavik and fun-loving Dublin. Straddling Europe and Asia, fascinating Istanbul is another hot ticket as is the picturesque and affordable Czech gem, Prague.

When I was going to board, one of the staff members told me that I could not board with my passport bag because it was tree items and I would need to check a bag. This was so stupid ! The bag was small. So I had to put my things in my pockets, put the funny bag inside the other bag. Then go throw it. Then in the plane put everything back again in my funny bag.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to The Azores
The Azores is known as the 'Hawaii of Europe' — with whale watching and dramatic volcanic scenery.
Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

The Azores, an autonomous Portuguese archipelago that’s in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is known for its breathtaking volcanic landscapes that feel almost prehistoric at times. Most first-time visitors head straight toSão Miguel, the largest and most-visited island and the site of the main international airport. And can you blame them? The “Hawaii of Europe” as it’s called brims with crater lakes, lush hillsides, fumaroles, and waterfalls. The terrain across the archipelago is both dramatic and remarkably varied. Other lesser-known locales such as São Jorge and Pico offer plenty for travelers to see, do, and admire, too. Santa Maria, the southernmost island in the chain, for example, boasts the only white-sand beaches in the region. Of course, in a place that’s steeped in such untamed natural beauty, eco-adventures — from hiking to kayaking — abound.
Yearning to trek through surreal scenery, go whale watching, sample local cheese, and post up at a relaxing hotel? Scroll on for expert tips to help you plan the most epic Azores trip.

A hub of geothermal activity on São Miguel, Furnas is blessed with many hot springs. Wellness and relaxation seekers will find plenty of spots to soak. Alves suggests Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha , a nature preserve with mineral pools, waterfalls, and lush foliage. “It's important to note that the water has a high sulfur content. The unique smell can take some time to get used to, but the healing benefits are plenty.”
Pico da Barrosa, Pico

The round-trip hike is quite pleasant as long as you have sure footing and a knowledgeable local guide to help navigate the volcanic rock terrain.
Whale Watching
The Azores is one of the best destinations for whale watching in the world. Many different types of cetaceans call the waters surrounding the archipelago home and guided tours give visitors a front-row seat to these majestic marine creatures. It doesn’t get better than fresh seafood — specifically buttery grilled limpets with a generous squeeze of lemon and sizzling garlic prawns — washed down with a pitcher of housemade sangria and a side of sweeping ocean views. That’s the setup at Bar Caloura , a long-standing favorite of locals (Alves included) and visitors to the small town of Água de Pau.
Tasquinha Vieira, São Miguel
One of Alves’s favorite cozy restaurants on the island of São Miguel, Tasquinha Vieira may be small in stature, but it boasts big flavors with a focus on using fresh, local ingredients. “The atmosphere is casual and unassuming, so it’s really perfect for sharing some plates and sipping on a cold beer.” Pro tip: Limited seating means it’s encouraged to make reservations in advance.
Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel, São Miguel
Carnivores rejoice! Meat takes center stage at Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel , a hidden gem with a farm collective vibe that Alves deems “outstanding.” The signature Bife à Associação (fried steak) is a must-order dish.

Best Wineries in the Azores
Azores wine company, pico.
If you only have the chance to visit one winery, consider the Azores Wine Company. Many credit the enterprising project with putting vinho from the Azores on the map in such a significant way. Besides tasting complex volcanic wines and touring modern facilities, visitors can savor acclaimed gastronomy and even spend the night in architecturally striking apartments (with advanced booking, of course).
Pico Wines, Pico
The largest and oldest wine operation in the Azores, Pico Wines is a cooperative of producers aimed at keeping noble grape varieties and ancestral winemaking traditions alive. “It’s definitely worth a visit to this UNESCO-protected site to do private vineyard tours, soak in the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, and sample some of the best pours in the region,” says Alves.
Quinta Da Jardinete, São Miguel
Pico has established itself as the wine island, but that certainly doesn’t mean you’ll have any trouble finding quality pours on São Miguel. Quinta Da Jardinete is a small, family-owned estate that produces terroir-driven vinho made from grapes such as merlot, aragonês, and lemberger (blaufränkisch) that are grown right on site.

Toronto to Europe
Top 5 airlines serving from europe to toronto.
My new suitcase got busted when I arrived at Toronto , two of the wheels are broken and can no longer be used , I am very disappointed over this situation but the flight and service was awesome .
From what I saw there was no entertainment. Similar to my flight to London, I personally would like the attendants to be more interactive during the flight.
Air Transat left my luggage back in Montreal and it took them 5 DAYS to get it to Venice. Luckily I was still in town, or else their option was to send my luggage back to my house in CANADA. What a joke! Oh, and I had to find a way to go get it at the airport in Venice, they needed 72 hours more to get it to where I was staying.
I was pleasantly surprised. I booked the "club class" which was basically like Domestic First Class. The service was superior. Food was pretty good. Seats and cabin were comfortable. For the price I paid, I was very pleased.
Super unproffesional flight . Flight attendants were unproffesional. I could hear them gossiping about theor boyfriends the whole trip
The connecting flight lay over was 4.00 hours, the gate agent booked me on the next flight which was about to depart at no extra cost.
The ticket price was reasonable, food was okay, not the best. I would use the service again.
Actually the flight was on time. New plane, food was okay but not great.
Old plane, hard seats, 1.30 hours delay, while seating on the plane waiting for departure.
Great boarding. Everything was on time. Plane was a bit old and the crew could have provided better drink service.
One of the best experiences ever. Thank you to the crew.
Everything was very good. I felt that the value received in paying for Business Class tickets was very good. The entertainment offered was plentiful, but could be improved with more recent options as well. By no means a deal-breaker. The staff were awesome, in the airport, at the gate and onboard.
bus ride to the plane was very crowded and had to wait a long time to get to the plane. The flight itself was great.
The airline wouldn't let me take my stroller to the gate, even though the website states we can. My screen did not work. Their website also states that long flights offer wifi to be purchased. My 8.5-hour flight did not have wifi available. I pushed my call light to ask for water (I was willing to buy it). It took over an hour for them to come and they could only give me a small glass at a time. Waters were not available for purchase.
Flight was delayed by a hour could have been better addressed. Flight was fine with great service by the flight attendants
They broke my luggage. I’m pissed off about that. Service was slow and inconsistent.
Together with my family, we all agreed that the LOT crew provided the most wonderful service that could be. We are grateful for such a great experience they provided to us! We will return and share our experience with all our friends and family.! Keep up the good work!
Flight WAW-ORD flight attendants were really rude, no smile at all. Except one young girl working in aft part of the cabin. They were talking only in Polish. After 4th/5th time asking in english, they were answering in english. Not the best approach to the pax.
The flight was delayed by an hour which caused me to lose my car rental in Vilnius
The flight was very bad, the food and the staff was very rude. My last time with them
The salad was awful it hade fetor and was leftover I hope that you must get it serious otherwise many passengers will get sick 😫
Flight to return home from Toronto for Cleveland was canceled after sitting on the plane for a half hour. Had to de board the plane and rent a car to drive home, or else wait until they had us rescheduled for later the next day.
I did not appreciate being scolded by the captain himself, and being told my dog could die, in front of my daughter.
Flying to Fredrickton from Toronto on July 10 was horrible worst flight ever
Poor airlines. I paid 2300 dollars for economy ticket from Delhi to Dallas for which I normally pay less than 1000 dolllaes. Flights got delayed passengers where not looked after at all. There was no one to help the connecting passengers. The food in the airlines was stale and bad I will never travel jn air Canada again.
I never boarded the flight. I received a text message two hours before the flight that it's going to be delayed and then I couldn't reach customer service for two hours when I talk to customer service they mentioned that I can go and cancel my ticket online. The online option doesn't allow me to cancel and ask me to call customer service, I tried that again and was on hold for two hours. I sent an email and I received an automated response. I don't think customer service exist with this company
Cancelled my flight to CVG while I was in the air from Quebec City
Worst experience ever. Flight was cancelled no one answering phones and no AC personnel at the airport. As a result I had to rent a car to get to my destination on time. Won’t be taking this airline for a long while.
I wish Air Canada would allow economy standard passengers to select their own SEATS on flight when CHECK-IN Online as usual, with No Extra Prices Charge as the Past years.
Flight was delayed an ultimately cancelled. Took me close to 45 mins with an Air Canada staff to be put on another flight.
The flight crew, the on-plane service, and the food were fine. The seats lacked cushioning and were uncomfortable compared to other planes from recent flights. The plane was initially delayed one hour and that expanded to 1.5 hours. When we boarded, there was insufficient room for our carry-on bags, which added more time to disembarking from the plane. It appeared the Air Canada staff or the Toronto Airport staff were less than competent to handle whatever the issue was that caused the delays, which was never communicated.
Boarding was haphazard after people with small children or walking difficulties
Due to flights being delayed, we missed our connecting flights and we were flown to a different airlines and we end up losing our luggage's.
Lufthansa staff was fantastic, but the airport was a mess. I was at this airport in the past and I have never experienced any problem, but this time it was nutty because of soccer tournament: UEFA 2024 championship
The boarding process is not well organized at all. It need to be totally revised with an emphasis on order.
full flight, could use more room....leg room fine seats tight
Tiny, cramped seats with minimum leg room and hard armrests. Basic needs like a seat and luggage came with an additional charge. Budget airline amenities with premium airlune cost. I won't use this airline again.
Seats were terribly uncomfortable! Couldn’t sleep! I paid for good seats when scheduled with Lufthansa, got crappy mid-section seats on Air Canada!
Cancelled flight, that morning! But got us on an Air Canada flight!
No refreshments apart from a bottle of water. No pillows. No entertainment. Flight delayed by 52 minutes.
I had paid for my family to sit together on the plane. When we got to the plane this wasn't the case and we were separated. meanwhile the lady sitting next to me told me how she didn't pay and were all sitting together
It didn't happen at all. They sold out my seat taking their own decision that I'll not get to boarding on time, but I was!
Flight was 2.5 hours late. Could not have made the connection in London, but later found out it had been cancelled. Getting reticketed in London for the flight to Geneva went well after I figured out what to do.
Was delayed for checks after evidence of bird strike, good call
Usual friendly BA crew who were helpful and so kind to the kids. New business class cabin combined with 787 makes for a really enjoyable experience.
The online flight scheduler only assigned 3 hours to get from Gatwick to heathrow. This is not enough time for a normal transit between the two airports. I had to run and hire a taxi because the bus and train would take too long. After paying a 150 Taxi I arrived at the gate just before it closed.
The flight, food and entertainment we all decent, except for a mishap when an attendant accidentally dropped a hot breakfast plate on my son who was fast asleep two hours before landing in London. She was very apologetic, and offered to help pay for any dry cleaning, but we have not received anything from BA. What could have been better, however, was the lack of any support upon landing to make a connection. The original flight from LAX to London had been delayed, so our time between flights had been cut to only an hour. There was no staff helping direct us where to go to get through security. When we approached anyone to ask for help, they acted bothered. I was traveling with four children that needed to use the restroom and get cleaned up after the spill, so we had to stop briefly for that, but again the gate notices directing us where to go only said to get to concourse A, there was no gate assignment. It was a busy time at security, and the process was slow, but we still arrived at the gate 10 minutes before the scheduled departure only to be told the gate had closed. We came to find out that our connection to Paris had actually taken off 5 minutes early, but without us, and six of its passengers. British Airways had to be aware of our delay and known that we had made it to security, but did not make any effort to ensure their passengers could make a tight connection through a crowded airport. Rebooking a flight for 8 hours later was not a pleasant experience and when we finally arrived in Paris at 1:00am, we arrived with only two of our six bags. Again the original flight was okay, but the support on the ground was greatly lacking.
Every single flight on my last trip was delayed and We were downgraded from our purchased seat choices. We also had specific requirements for the meals which were reduced to standard choice!
The design of business class is absolutely horrible. The flight attendants have to cross in front of passengers to pass the food. Passengers have to crawl over other passengers to get to the bathroom or to get to their bag. It’s shocking!! The flight attendants however were superb!
I realize it almost has to happen, but giving up one carry-on is difficult. With the standard one in the overhead and one under the seat, I believe it could have worked. We chose British Airways because of its baggage allowance, but giving up on carry-on is a major negative in choosing BA in the future. Again, it is understandable. Everything else is top notch. Thank you.

Canada must respond to mpox crisis in Africa to prevent spread here: experts
By Nicole Ireland, The Canadian Press

Last Updated August 15, 2024 7:18 am.
The World Health Organization’s declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency means Canada must do its part to help stem outbreaks of the virus in Africa, experts say.
“Where there is a fire, we all put it out quickly, and the whole village is safe. If you allow one house to burn in a village, sooner or later, that fire is coming for you,” said Dr. Madhukar Pai, Canada Research Chair in epidemiology and global health at McGill University in Montreal.
The WHO’s declaration on Wednesday comes as mpox — formerly known as monkeypox — has surged in Congo and emerged in neighbouring Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, none of which have had reported cases of the virus before.
Other African countries have had outbreaks of different clades — or types — of mpox. An emergency committee of independent experts told WHO’s director-general they were concerned about the “potential to spread further across countries in Africa and possibly outside the continent,” a news release said.
Although the current risk in Canada is low, the declaration of an international emergency is a signal for all countries to report their own cases of mpox, as well as share resources to help the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention bring the outbreaks under control, Pai said in an interview.
“What we should do .. is to instantaneously band with other Global North countries — U.S., U.K., Europe — (and) come up with a package of money, resources, vaccines, medicines, tests, whatever is required for Africa CDC to get ahead of this pandemic before it becomes a genuine global threat,” said Pai.

- Ontario seeing rise in Mpox cases: public health agency
Doing so is not only being a “good global citizen” but also the best way to prevent mpox from travelling and becoming a bigger threat in Canada, he said.
”We cannot afford another global epidemic. And this is a time to act — not when it’s too late and suddenly it’s in Montreal. It’s in Toronto… Then going into a frenzy trying to get ahead of it. We will spend millions more fighting it here rather than helping Africa right now,” said Pai.
Jason Kindrachuk, Canada Research Chair in emerging and re-emerging viruses at the University of Manitoba, agreed.
”Viruses and emerging infectious diseases don’t respect international borders and don’t carry passports,” he said in an interview.
“As we let these things move more broadly through communities and through countries … the greater the risk comes for further spread, you know, to our own country,” he said.
Kindrachuk also noted the financial consequences for Canada, as well as other countries, if they fail to respond quickly.
“Every time that these outbreaks escalate to a point where there is a public health emergency, either at a local level or at a global level that’s announced, there’s a massive economic and resource toll that has to be undertaken to try and get things contained at that point.”
One of the main reasons for declaring an international emergency, the WHO said, is the emergence of a new mpox strain, called clade Ib, which is spreading rapidly and appears to cause more serious illness.
There have been no cases of clade I cases in Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
“PHAC is closely monitoring the increase in clade I mpox cases in the DRC (Congo) and neighbouring regions and liaising with partners and subject matter experts to update risk assessments, public health guidance and travel health advice as appropriate,” the agency said.
The agency is also monitoring an increase in clade II mpox cases in Ontario, it said.
Clade II mpox is the milder form of the virus that appeared in Canada during an outbreak in 2022.

W.H.O. Declares Global Emergency Over New Mpox Outbreak
The epidemic is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the virus has now appeared in a dozen other African countries.

The rapid spread of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, in African countries constitutes a global health emergency, the World Health Organization declared on Wednesday.
This is the second time in three years that the W.H.O. has designated an mpox epidemic as a global emergency. It previously did so in July 2022. That outbreak went on to affect nearly 100,000 people , primarily gay and bisexual men, in 116 countries, and killed about 200 people.
The threat this time is deadlier. Since the beginning of this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo alone has reported 15,600 mpox cases and 537 deaths. Those most at risk include women and children under 15.
“The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern D.R.C., its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general.
The outbreak has spread through 13 countries in Africa, including a few that had never reported mpox cases before. On Tuesday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a “public health emergency of continental security,” the first time the organization has taken that step since the African Union granted it the power to do so last year.
“It’s in the interests of the countries, of the continent and of the world to get our arms around this and stop transmission as soon as we can,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, the executive director for preparedness and response at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, a nonprofit that finances vaccine development.
Facing the threat of global spread, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged clinicians and the public in the United States to be alert for the virus.
The W.H.O.’s designation of a “public health emergency of international concern” is intended to prompt member countries to begin preparing for the virus’s appearance and to share vaccines, treatments and other key resources with poorer nations.
“We need concerted international action to stem this recent, novel outbreak,” said Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist at Yale University who served on the W.H.O.’s mpox committee in 2022.
The outbreak that year stayed mostly within tight sexual networks, among gay and bisexual men. A combination of behavioral changes and vaccination tamped down the spread.
In the United States, for example, the toll dropped to about 1,700 cases last year from more than 30,000 in 2022.
The version of mpox that has been circulating in Congo has always been more virulent, and currently has a death rate of about 3 percent, compared with 0.2 percent in the 2022 outbreak. The infection can produce fever, respiratory symptoms, muscle aches and swollen lymph nodes, as well as a rash on the hands, feet, chest, mouth or genitals.
Until recently, it spread mainly through consumption of contaminated meat or close contact with infected animals and people. Most of the deaths have been in children, who in this region of Africa are already beset by malnutrition and infectious diseases like cholera, measles and polio.
Should the outbreak spread globally, children in developed countries are likely to be less vulnerable to severe illness, experts have said.
Last year, for the first time, scientists discovered sexual transmission of this version of mpox, with cases split about equally among young men and women. According to genetic analyses , sometime around September, the virus gained mutations that enabled it to spread more readily among people. It has done so partly through heterosexual prostitution .
This viral type has not surfaced outside Africa. Over all, there have been more than 17,500 presumed and confirmed mpox cases in 13 countries, according to Africa C.D.C . Most of the cases and deaths have occurred in Congo.
Given the rapid spread, the declaration of a global health emergency was justified, said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who served on the 2022 mpox panel.
“I think we learned a great deal about the speed with which this virus can spread,” she said.
Amid rising numbers, Congo has approved two mpox vaccines , a Japanese product called LC16 and Jynneos, the vaccine made by Bavarian Nordic that was used in 2022 in the United States and Europe. But Congo has yet to institute an immunization plan.
On Aug. 9, the W.H.O. invited vaccine manufacturers to apply for an emergency use listing , a prerequisite for international groups such as Gavi, a global vaccine alliance, to purchase and distribute the shots in low-income nations.
Bavarian Nordic has donated 15,000 doses of Jynneos to be distributed in African countries. But that is a tiny fraction of the 10 million doses needed to control the outbreak, according to Africa C.D.C.
“The challenge is that these vaccines are not sufficient,” even if countries try to protect only the people at highest risk, said Dr. Dimie Ogoina, a Nigerian scientist and chair of the W.H.O.’s mpox emergency committee.
LC16 was used in Japanese children in the 1970s. Clinical trials funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations are now evaluating whether Jynneos can protect children and people who have already been exposed to the virus , Dr. Lurie said.
The organization is also supporting the development of a new mRNA vaccine made by BioNTech that would protect against mpox and related viruses, such as smallpox.
“This outbreak has been smoldering for quite a long time, and we continually have missed opportunities to shut it down,” Dr. Lurie said. “I’m really glad that everybody is now paying attention and focusing their efforts on this.”
