We Butter the Bread With Butter Announces Full North American Tour

we butter the bread with butter tour 2024

Germany’s We Butter The Bread With Butter (WBTBWB) has announced all dates for their upcoming North American tour. Though having a sizable U.S. fanbase from their previous releases (even cracking the iTunes Top 50 with their 2010 release Der Tag an dem die Welt unterging ) this will be their first time ever performing on U.S. soil. The dates will be in support of their upcoming full-length album, Goldkinder , which will be released on August 13 th . Dates for the tour can be seen below.

As an example of the band’s drive to create a live performance as attention-grabbing as their music, We Butter The Bread With Butter has released live performance video of their new song “ Pyroman & Astronaut ” at a festival setting.

Watch the group perform “Pyroman & Astronaut” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYrMoIzgKHc

The band’s first official U.S. release came last month with the Projekt Herz EP, which received love from U.S. media outlets like Revolver Magazine , Metal Insider , Pure Grain Audio , and Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal (who kept the song “ USA ” on heavy rotation).

Boasting mixing assistance by the legendary Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein, Apocalyptica) and self-produced by the band, Goldkinder takes WBTBWB’s distinct heavy rock sound interjected with elements of metal and electro-pop to new heights. The album has already caught the attention of tastemakers like Metal Sucks , Metal Underground , and CraveOnline , the latter recently premiering the music video for “ Alles Was Ich Will .”

Fans can pre-order the album (link below) and receive “Alles Was Ich Will” as a download immediately, with the rest of the album delivered on the August 13 th street date. Another new song “ Das Uhrwerk ,” is also streaming on the band’s YouTube page.

ALBUM REVIEW: Das Album – We Butter The Bread With Butter

The sheer amount of noise that just two guys can make is simply astounding; a concept understood no greater than by WE BUTTER THE BREAD WITH BUTTER ( WBTBWB ) . After over a decades-long absence from founding vocalist Tobias Schultka , Berlin-bred (bread?) death-electrocore duo return to their roots after a failed experiment toying with a four-man line-up and “making real music” with Das Album (The Album). It’s a fitting title for a project that captures the band’s ethos better than any of its predecessors. WBTBWB are back and they demand your attention.

Das Album is, by all means, a reason to rejoice for breadheads both old and new. The reformation of the band’s original line-up from 2008, with Schultka handling vocals, drums and synths alongside guitarist/bassist Marcel Neumann , marks the end of a six-year hiatus from one of Berlin’s finest, and the original dynamic duo from Deutschland clearly have no intention on mincing their words, or their riffs. Das Album is an eclectic mixture of ravenous beatdown death metal infused neatly with peppy synth-wave and a constant sense of humour throughout; the pair essentially grinds the listener to a pulp with tongue firmly in cheek. What’s most refreshing about Das Album is that WBTBWB have finally hit upon what makes them ‘them’ after numerous attempts trying to unearth an identity that was never there. Das Album is precisely what the band needed. No frills, just huge riffs, memorable songwriting and a big grin the whole way through.

From the departure of Schultka in 2010, the band’s bakery was left without a star baker and forthcoming projects proved unable to rise to the heights of their debut. Der Tag An Dem Die Welt Unterging , Goldkinder and Wider Geil! all l acked a signature personality, and despite retaining the key genre-blending sounds, they were largely diluted by bland songwriting and production that failed to amp up the band’s real potential.

If all the band needed was a six-year break and a few personnel changes then perhaps good things really do come to those who wait. Das Album Intro invites us into the fray with a hypnotic and sinister electro beat that would make even Lavendar Town ’s skin crawl before the utter mayhem of Dreh Auf! is brought down with the weight of the earth and the urgency of some of Mick Gordon ’s finest DOOM tracks to make for a rather firm welcoming handshake.

This is a home run start that could never be recovered as, from here, we simply glide from banger to banger, breaking necks and raising spirits. Schultka keeps mouths grinning as he dives in and out of his impressive range from demonic tyrant (seen best on Jump ‘n’ Run and Schribwarenfachverkaufer ) to the endearing innocence and zaniness that take Das Album from being just ‘another’ metal record, and WBTBWB from being just ‘another’ metal band. WBTBWB also avoids the pitfalls of previous outings with a focus on tight and memorable songwriting being crucial to the album’s mission statement. With the exception of the expected hooks, which perhaps do follow a similar blueprint but are still a solid reason to stretch your vocal cords, Das Album rarely re-treads the same ground and keeps its 13-track runtime well clear of self-plagiarism. Expect twists, turns and the odd slap in the face around each corner.

This is precisely the WBTBWB we were missing – let alone the one we needed – for the past 13 years; direct, punchy, memorable metal with generous helpings from other sub-genres to enrich this already  enlightened concoction. Das Album is the album to return the duo to the centre of the limelight, having thoroughly overpaid their dues, and marks what is hopefully an auspicious fresh slate in the band’s biography. As dramatic as it is droll, Das Album is a return to form like no other.

Rating: 9/10

We Butter the Bread With Butter – Das Album (Album Review)

we butter the bread with butter tour 2024

Well, you gotta give it to ’em. “ Das Album ” by We Butter the Bread With Butter  left me speechless, and I had a real hard time figuring out what to write. Long story short? I absolutely loved it. I got so into this album that I decided to write this review completely in German. So, here we go.

Okay that didn’t last very long. My German is about as good as my juggling skills (I can’t juggle). But in all seriousness, “ Das Album ” is a collection of 13 astonishing and exhilarating tracks that have you singing along where/however you can.

Before we get into the tracks, let’s just chat about the album cover. I spent a good five minutes just looking at the album artwork. For some reason it was just so satisfying to look at . The overall aesthetic that the band have gone for with their latest release is just so unassuming and so easy on the eyes, yet very deceiving in that the music that comes with it is absolutely bone-crushing.

“ Das Album ”, the band’s fifth release, is genuinely so diverse, verging on well-organized chaos. I really did not expect to be this surprised, track after track. I couldn’t predict how a single song would go, and that was just as refreshing as it was exciting. The band said it themselves, this album is like a smoothie for your ears. A full-length record that is this heavily infused with electronic elements could become a little stale if done without smart execution, but that’s most certainly not the case with “Das Album “. Nearly every single track is memorable without the listener having to go through multiple play-throughs (though I highly recommend doing so, you’ll hear something new hiding in the mix every time). The integration between techno and metal is seamless, and the record really makes the listener feel like this unique blend is as conventional as classical-infused black metal, or rap-infused nu-metal.
I remember listening to this band back in the late 2000’s and appreciating them for their novelty. Tracks with humorous titles like “ Breekachu ” were sure to lure in most listeners with a chuckle, but ultimately the ‘wow’ factor wore off. It sounds like after a few years of testing different styles, the band has found something truly valuable. It’s relatable back to their early days, but matured and intelligently written, resulting in an amazing blend of techno-metal that has something of substance to offer.

Both Tobias Schultka and Marcel Neumann pull off some incredible feats on “ Das Album ”. This is accentuated further by the production prowess of Christoph Wieczorek , producing an album that is crisp and clear, yet insanely powerful. He delivered a similar polishing magic to the recent (and highly lauded)  Venues album, “ Solace “. It feels like the chaotic energy brought by the duo was focused and distilled by Wieczorek into the bright and metallic mix we hear on this record.

I don’t want to give too much away about the tracks, especially if you haven’t yet spun the record, but there is so much to talk about. You will be transported from purely demonic beatdowns, to electro moments that make you feel like you’re in a windowless club in Berlin at 4 in the morning. The opening track, aptly titled “ Das Album Intro ” is a short and sweet electro offering that doesn’t prepare you for the onslaught that follows. “ Dreh auf! ” is a huge party track that’s delivered with the force of a sledgehammer. The boys are celebrating their return to total destruction, punching out lyrics like “Turn it up! WBTBWB is back!”.

we butter the bread with butter tour 2024

I mentioned this earlier but I’ll reiterate in English: there is one thing that I can say for sure, I have never sung along to the words “Meine Finger sind zu klein” before in my life. Same goes for “ N!CE ”, a track that had me constantly yelling wholesome lines like “Ich find’s mega nice”. Better yet, I can’t remember the last time I sang along to any album of this heaviness and grinned from ear to ear, laughing occasionally. This album is a perfect reminder that even in a dark period such as now, it is so important to have humor. In the metal world it’s undeniably common to be serious and have a dark and intimidating demeanor, but We Butter the Bread With Butter proves that you don’t have to be angry and scary all the time; you can truly just be having fun playing the music that you deeply love. It also translates to how we see the world right now, you could easily say that the world is a dark and horrible place, or you can make the most of what you find passion in and have some fun with it, for once!

Speaking of having fun, it absolutely baffles me that the song with the cutest, yes, cutest chorus ever, is also home to one of the most revoltingly brutal breakdowns in the metal realm currently. “ Piks mich ” is the name of the track, and its chorus is guaranteed to buzz around in your head like a mosquito that won’t leave you alone. That’s just the kind of eclectic mix of styles you’ll be in for whilst you go through “ Das Album ”. “ Läuft ” does the same thing, going back and forth from aggressive metalcore straight into some equally aggressive hardstyle.

One thing to be taken seriously is the level of talent from these Berlin boys. Despite the drums being programmed by Neumann , it takes a formidable level of musicianship for him to then be able to provide a guitar performance of the same intense calibre. The eleventh track “ Metal ” has some of Neumann ’s best guitar work, sweeping up and down some evil arpeggios and playing some rapid riffs that immediately took me back to the early days of As Blood Runs Black . “ Letzter Song ”, an impressive final track, also has an awesome little performance by Neumann towards the end in which the guitar flutters over a massive synth sequence.

Further praise should go to Neumann for putting together a vast and varied collection of synth and electronic layers that have their own personality through each track. I wouldn’t be surprised if more time and love was put into getting the right sounds and performances in this department than the guitars.

Schultka ’s vocals are astonishing. Next to the lyrics and well-done techno/metal infusion, his unique performance is one of the best components of this album. There is an incredible level of vocal variance, so much so that it’s really hard to know what his regular ‘go to’ vocal technique or sound is, as he does them all so competently. I think screaming in German makes his performance even more gnarly. Similar to how Alex the Terrible from Slaughter to Prevail sounds even more horrifying when he growls in Russian.

It’s unquestionably entertaining to listen to the vocals on “ Das Album ”. You’re taken by the hand and pulled into this wonderland of insane vocal sounds in the same way that Justin Bonitz from Tallah  has done on their near-perfect debut album “Matriphagy”. The high screams from Schultka very much remind me of the early days of deathcore, like former Chelsea Grin vocalist Alex Koehler in the “ Desolation of Eden ” days, or Scott Lewis from Carnifex during their “ The Diseased and the Poisoned ” era. His ‘scat’ sections are hilarious, but fit in to the tracks so easily that it’s hard to think that it could be done any other way. “ Angriff der Dönerteller ” is full of them, as is the beginning to “ 20 km/h ” where he begins with an appropriately confident “Ratatatatata”.

His spoken sections are comical, yet just like the scat sections they work perfectly. “Sprich sie einfach an” creeps along for the most part whilst Schultka provocatively pulls himself together to talk to a girl. He even ties it in and layers it on top of some screaming sections in “ Jump ’n’ Run ”.

Look… I did say that I didn’t want to give too much away about the songs, but , I did also say there was so much to talk about. “ Das Album ” is a barrel of fun, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Each track has been created, produced and released with as much love as there is personality in them. The ability of We Butter the Bread With Butter to create some truly refreshing numbers that entertain the listener for 40 minutes has completely removed the potential for them to feel gimmicky or short-lived. Each offering is so full of energy, and no matter what language it’s being sung in, it translates effortlessly to the listener that this band is well and truly back, and they’re having the time of their lives.

We Butter the Bread With Butter has given us one of the most unique and versatile albums of the year, and they did it with a smile. 10 Foods That Seem Healthy, But Are They Really?

Posted: June 7, 2024 | Last updated: June 7, 2024

<p><span>Explore the world of gastronomy and immerse yourself in the ubiquity of bread, the quintessential staple food beloved by people worldwide. This versatile food comes in various forms and varieties, including white bread, whole wheat bread, sourdough bread, and more. With its rich carbohydrate content, bread is an excellent energy source for the body. Furthermore, bread is high in fiber, promoting healthy digestion and optimal bowel function. Whether toasted for breakfast, enjoyed as a sandwich for lunch, or served as a dinner, bread remains an integral part of many meals.</span></p>

In our quest for a healthier lifestyle, we often turn to food choices that we believe are good for us. However, the world of nutrition can be deceptive, and not all foods labeled as “healthy” live up to their reputation. It’s easy to fall victim to the “health halo effect,” where we assume certain foods are nutritious simply based on their perceived healthiness.

<p><span>While multi-grain bread may seem healthy, reading the labels carefully is important. Often, the bread may be made with refined flour and only have small amounts of whole grains. In fact, some multi-grain bread may even have added sugars or preservatives. So, looking for 100% whole-grain bread or baking your own bread with a mix of healthy grains is always a good idea.</span></p>

<p><span>Energy bars may be marketed as a healthy snack, but many are loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives. It's important to read the labels and look for bars that are high in protein and fiber and low in added sugars. <p><span>While crunchy snacks like veggie chips, rice cakes, and pretzels may seem like a healthy snack option, many of them are highly processed and loaded with sodium and unhealthy oils. <p><span>Plant-based milk has recently gained popularity as a healthier alternative to dairy milk. However, not all plant-based milk is created equal. Many store-bought options are loaded with added sugars and thickeners, which can negate any potential health benefits. <p><span>Granola is often praised as a healthy breakfast or snack option but can also be a hidden source of added sugars and calories. Many store-bought granolas are made with sugar, oil, and other high-calorie ingredients. Making your own granola at home with whole grains, nuts, and seeds can be a healthier option.</span></p>

<p><span>Peanut butter, a classic American food item, has gained a strong following in Japan, where it is used in everything from sandwiches to baked goods. The creamy and nutty flavor has won over the Japanese, who can't seem to get enough of it. Some even bring back jars of peanut butter from their trips to the US to satisfy their cravings.</span></p>

6. Peanut Butter

Reduced-fat peanut butter may seem like a healthier choice, but it often contains added sugars and other ingredients to compensate for the lost fat. Plus, the healthy fats found in regular peanut butter can actually be beneficial for heart health in moderation. Regarding peanut butter, choosing a natural option with minimal added ingredients is best.

<p><span>Sports drinks may be marketed as a way to replenish electrolytes and stay hydrated during exercise, but many are also high in added sugars and calories. <p><span>Dried fruit might seem like the perfect option, but hold on! While it can be a tasty alternative to candy, it's important to keep moderation in mind. Be aware of its chewy goodness – dried fruit is often loaded with sugar and calories and can be a slippery slope to overindulging. Be sure to check the label and clear any varieties with added sugars and preservatives. </span></p>

<p><span>Sushi isn't just a warm delicacy; it's just as mouthwatering when served cold. The combination of vinegar rice, fresh fish, and seaweed creates a unique flavor and texture that is perfect for a refreshing and nutritious meal. With many vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids packed in every bite, it's no wonder sushi is a fan favorite.</span></p>

If you’re a sushi lover, you probably already know that not all sushi is created equal. While sushi can be a healthy food choice, it’s important to know the potential pitfalls. Unfortunately, many sushi rolls contain high-calorie sauces, fried ingredients, and even cream cheese. And if that wasn’t enough, some sushi rolls are made with white rice, which can cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket.

<p>Some guys have tried the direct approach by asking straightforward questions. For example, what's your name? Are you single? Think I am cute? This approach may have worked for them, but usually, this can come off as pushy and quizzical.</p> <p>One user wrote, “after being quizzed with the usual questions, he asked if I had any kids. I said no. This derailed his train of thought completely. He said he couldn't believe it; he'd never met a girl my age who didn't have kids, and he kept following me around and repeating it.”</p>

Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds Says Band Has 'Been Late on Stage Because We're Playing League of Legends '

"People probably think I'm not a gamer, but it's my bread and butter. It's our world," said Reynolds in a new interview

Matthew Baker/Getty

If an Imagine Dragons concert doesn't start on time, it's possibly because the band is caught up in a heated video game match.

The "Radioactive" band's frontman Dan Reynolds opened up about his love for gaming in a new interview with The Washington Post , revealing the hobby has caused the group to delay its own shows.

"We’ve been late onstage because we’re playing League of Legends ," the singer-songwriter, 36, told the outlet of the multiplayer online battle game, which reserves the power to ban players who leave matches early.

Gabe Ginsberg/Getty

Imagine Dragons has a history of collaborating with video game companies. Several of the band's songs have been featured in commercials for gaming brands Ubisoft, Epic Games, Nintendo, Riot Games (the company behind League of Legends ) and more.

The "Believer" group's first time working with a gaming company was about a decade ago, when they performed as the backing instrumentalists for Nintendo composer Koji Kondo at the Game Awards in Las Vegas.

"I geeked out harder on that than when we played in front of [Paul] McCartney ," said Reynolds, who grew up listening to Kondo's work for Super Mario World , in the Washington Post interview.

Kevin Mazur/Getty

When it comes to working with major gaming brands, Imagine Dragons isn't "going around knocking on doors" for opportunities, explained the lead vocalist: "They just started reaching out, and we said, 'Absolutely, this is amazing.'"

"Look, I’m really tall, 6 foot 4, never played sports, always did music and drama, so people probably think I’m not a gamer, but it’s my bread and butter," added Reynolds. "It's our world."

Imagine Dragons is currently gearing up to release a new album, Loom , on June 28. Elsewhere in the Washington Post interview, Reynolds opened up about the inspiration behind the band's latest material.

"I grew up listening to singer-songwriters — Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens. But I love pop music," he said. "I like to create big choruses and songs that I want to hear, and I happen to be in a healthier, happier place with this record, so hopefully that’s reflected in it."

The Grand Tour star forced to axe his own TV show after 4 years

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

James May has become the victim of his own success and has been forced to axe his TV show.

In Oh Cook! James documented his journey as his cooking skills went from abysmal to satisfactory, and finally, pretty damn good.

The two series of the Amazon Prime Video show have made the The Grand Tour star an accomplished cook in four short years.

The whole concept of Oh Cook!, which was a play on his famous catchphrase – Oh c**k, was James, 61, receiving tutition as he is hopeless with an oven.

At first, he tried to get a grip on the basics including lasagne, fish pie, and a full Sunday roast for the whole crew’s lunch was his final hurdle in the first offering. Having gained his confidence in the kitchen, for the second season he tried his hand at Japanese food, vegan delights, and even made dishes for a 70s themed-party.

Off the back of the programme, the TV star even released a cookbook, which has become a best-seller.

James May with a lasagne

‘It was a totally fresh concept that viewers lapped up, as usually cooking series are presented by professional chefs,’ a source told The Sun .

‘But after two seasons, James is now quite a good cook, so it’s not a gag he can continue to flog.’

While he may be hanging up his chef hat on TV, it’s not the end of the road with Amazon as he will continue to explore the globe in travelogue James May: Our Main in… He’s already embraced local culture in Japan, Italy and India, and the world is quite literally his Oyster with Amazon budget.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

Of course, there’s the bread and butter – The Grand Tour, which he presents with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The former Top Gear hosts have starred on the motoring show since 2016, and their special in Zimbawe is set to air towards the end of this year.

The series will end after the conclusion of the fifth series , but the trio, who’ve worked together since 2002 could be back together once more.

‘I wouldn’t rule it out,’ said James. Although, he quickly added: ‘But you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.’

Metro.co.uk contacted Amazon and James May’s representatives for comment.

Don’t Text, Mommy’s at the Rolling Stones

Portrait of Justin Curto

It’s summer — do you know where your children are? For once, avoiding that ghastly Ticketmaster queue. While Taylor is off on her Tortured Poets Department semester abroad and Ariana Grande is in the Galinda bubble , there’s an uncommon dearth of young stars on the American circuit through August. Left to fill the gap? Older artists, who are hitting the road to tour new albums, celebrate anniversaries, or just line their pockets (and sometimes all three). Yes, it’s a season of looking back, whether that means to the Summer of Love or to those years when you couldn’t leave the house without hearing an Usher hit. So which Gen-X, elder-millenial, or boomer-friendly summer tour is right for you?

The Golden Oldies

These old-timers still got the goods! Frozen-in-amber acts the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band are playing marathon sets with a verve that’ll have you thinking they’re doping with Cialis, while Bob Dylan continues his never-ending tour, this time with Willie Nelson. Also, icons of the ’80s — whether that’s Janet Jackson’s dance pop or Metallica ’s thrash metal — firmly count as classic now. Dust off that leather jacket and embrace it.

The ’90s Wannabes

Vampire Weekend doesn’t technically belong with the Gen-Xers. But they did leave the neo–dad rock of 2019’s Father of the Bride for ’90s New York City nostalgia on this year’s Only God Was Above Us, so consider them ’90s in spirit. Death comes for us all.

Vampire Weekend June 6–October 17

The Stars of TRL

From two-fifths of *NSYNC to five-fifths of P!nk (a.k.a. just P!nk), this season’s highest-profile pop shows are for the Y2k MTV-nostalgia crowd (c ondolences to the J.Lo fans ). Of the paltry few things millennial culture can take pride in, these performers’ live acts are among them — just ask anyone who saw Usher in Vegas.

The Country Elders

Old country fans who love complaining about how the genre isn’t as good as it was back in their day will have ample opportunity to relive it. Alabama and George Strait are repping the best of the ’80s (alongside old soul Chris Stapleton), Tim McGraw and Clint Black are resurrecting their classic ’90s sound , and Kenny Chesney is delivering all those laid-back, turn-of-the-century hits. Even if, for some reason, you’re longing for 2010s bro-country, well, Luke Bryan’s on tour too.

The Cross-Generational Diplomats

What’s a band to do when they’re not a big enough draw to play amphitheaters on their own? Team up with another band that’s about 20 years older (or younger!). These acts are ambassadors, bringing together generations of indie-music nerds (Modest Mouse & Pixies), karaoke balladeers (Train & REO Speedwagon), or fans of groovy Bay Area rockers (Santana & Counting Crows).

Modest Mouse & Pixies Through June 30

Santana & Counting Crows June 14–September 2

Young Music That Feels Old

Okay, here’s where we can build some bridges. This is the ‘take your tween daughter or younger cousin to one of these and earn Mom Cred, Dad Cred, or the much less vaunted Cousin Cred(?)’ material. Proving to older generations that what’s popular today isn’t that bad is a fool’s errand. Well, except for right now, while old-fashioned rootsy folk and country music is topping the charts. Parents will probably like the heart-baring Noah Kahan and the country rogue Zach Bryan as much as their zillennial kids .

SUNRISE, Fla. — When the Florida Panthers say the job isn’t over, that they’re not finished, that their lofty objective heading into this season is not nearly complete, well, all of us — especially the Edmonton Oilers or Dallas Stars — better believe them because they’re not even hiding the fact that winning their second consecutive Eastern Conference championship Saturday night was nothing to celebrate.

You can’t win the Stanley Cup without winning one of the two conferences, but after almost fulfilling their lifelong dreams last June only to fall short against the Vegas Golden Knights , the Panthers treated this latest Prince of Wales Trophy after a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers so casually and, frankly, like what it is — a necessary prerequisite to get to the actual prize they’d prefer.

“Last year after we finished the Carolina series, pandemonium’s not the right word, but the energy level postgame was through the roof,” coach Paul Maurice said. “Slightly subdued this year relative to that. Lots of happy people, but maybe we’ve got a little more experience now. And I feel like even on the bench it wasn’t insanity when the buzzer went.”

No, it was so, so business as usual.

No throwing gloves and helmets in the air. No piles of players jumping up-and-down.

Just hugs and high fives, almost like a regular season win in February.

And this time, unlike last postseason when captain Aleksander Barkov defied his coach’s advice and touched and celebrated with the Prince of Wales Trophy, Barkov barely looked at it. Almost faked touching it.

Paul Maurice wanted to make sure his captain knew what to do with Prince of Wales Trophy this year. 😂 pic.twitter.com/vfQEWTYnSM — Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) June 2, 2024

Last year was different though, he said. As Sam Bennett said after Saturday’s win, the Panthers were just happy to be there after squeaking into the playoffs, upsetting the record-setting Boston Bruins in the first round and sweeping Carolina in the third. The Panthers deserved to celebrate after getting to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1996.

This year? Barkov listened to Maurice’s instruction, as well as all his teammates who agreed he shouldn’t touch the trophy due largely to superstition or, as Maurice said, “Silly games.”

“I think we needed to do something different and that’s what we did,” Barkov said when asked about not touching the trophy after NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly presented it to the captain.

Then, after the game, inside the locker room, there was no loud music. Just a couple of prideful claps during the postgame speeches.

It is not easy to lose in the Stanley Cup Final and make it back the following year. The Panthers are the first team to do that since the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 after losing to Detroit the year before. The Penguins, incidentally, won that Cup in 2009.

And since the NHL expansion era in 1967-68, the Panthers are only the sixth team to make the Stanley Cup Final after losing the year prior (besides Pittsburgh, the others being the 1983-1984 Oilers; 1977-1978 Bruins; and the Blues in 1968-1969 and 1969-1970).

But losing to Vegas last year was a source of motivation heading into last offseason. Two weeks after the defeat, Panthers players, led by Carter Verhaeghe , rented ice in South Florida to hold informal practices for those teammates who spend their offseason here.

The tone was triggered naturally by Barkov.

Last August, in Stockholm at the NHL’s European Media Tour, Barkov sat down with The Athletic and said, “A lot of times when you get that close and lose, you go into the summer and lack motivation. I can tell you that won’t be the case for me and won’t be the case for us.”

The standard this year was different. Despite that short offseason, Panthers players came to camp stronger, faster and more motivated than ever.

And management did a tremendous job signing three NHL defensemen in Oliver Ekman-Larsson , Niko Mikkola and Dmitry Kulikov , with Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour hurt. GM Bill Zito also improved the penalty kill by grabbing big right-shot center Kevin Stenlund .

But it was Barkov, Maurice said, who made clear what this season would be all about.

“Barkov, because he is the face, the driver and the captain, does set a bar for work,” Maurice said. “How hard he drives the team is the expectation for everybody else. He will not stop and he won’t quit. How does anybody else?”

The Rangers may have won the Presidents’ Trophy, but the betting favorite heading into the series was Florida because it was the deeper team. Not only do the Panthers have star power up and down the lineup, but they also are, unlike the Rangers, elite at five-on-five. They have incredible special teams, are relentless on the forecheck and have the luxury of Sergei Bobrovsky in net. He allowed two goals or fewer in 10 of his past 11 playoff games.

In addition, while many look at them as an offensive juggernaut, their bread and butter is on the defensive side of the puck. They allowed the fewest goals in the NHL during the regular season and are quite comfortable playing in even or one-goal games.

The Panthers shut down the Rangers’ big guns all series. Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox had no goals. Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin had one each.

Five of the six games in this series were one-goal games, and every game had a one-goal lead at some point in the third period. No team in the playoffs has been better than the Panthers in the third (25-11 score advantage).

“We have a very deep team,” Matthew Tkachuk said. “I mean, there’s guys (like Ryan Lomberg and Nick Cousins ) that are not even able to be in the lineup right now that are huge parts of our team and have been huge parts of our season and in playoffs. So it’s just a different feeling. This year, we’re getting contributions from everybody. It doesn’t matter who it is on any given night — like somebody’s gonna step up. Somebody’s gonna score the goal, it’s gonna be a different guy blocking the shots. We’re all capable of doing everything, especially defense.

“The buy-in from everybody is so big. We expected to be back here. Obviously, nothing’s guaranteed, but we were expecting this the way we’ve been working, the way we’ve been dialed in and detailed. We’re very happy to be back, but the job’s not finished.”

Saturday was a game where the Rangers did a good job on the Panthers’ top two lines, but Bennett opened the scoring in the first period with his fourth goal of the series by finishing a give-and-go with Evan Rodrigues .

But as Tkachuk indicated, anybody can step up on this Panthers squad and the line that was going all night was the third line of Eetu Luostarinen – Anton Lundell – Vladimir Tarasenko . Lundell scored what Maurice called the “de facto winner” in Game 5 in New York and the three teamed up for the eventual winner in Game 6 in Florida. Luostarinen, who was sensational from the opening faceoff, set it all up with a hard-nosed forecheck before Lundell set up Tarasenko for the winner.

It was the trade deadline pickup and 2019 St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup champion’s first goal of the series and third of the playoffs.

Vladimir Tarasenko’s first goal of the Eastern Conference Final is a massive one! @FlaPanthers | #TimeToHunt | #StanleyCup pic.twitter.com/5lScLHbibG — NHL Network (@NHLNetwork) June 2, 2024

What Maurice particularly loved for two games in a row was how the Panthers got to their game in the third period. It started on this night with Montour flattening Alex Wennberg , and the Panthers skated the Rangers into oblivion from there.

As Maurice said the day before, “The enjoyment of the game, and this is new for me, comes from my understanding that I’m not really that important here. I mean it. There’s a great line: ‘Don’t be so humble. You’re not that good.’ It’s the players. And when they’re going they don’t need me.”

And that goes especially for their attitude heading into the season.

It may sound arrogant, but for the Panthers, it’s Cup or bust.

They are singularly focused and serious about the goal at hand, and that could spell trouble for whichever team — the Oilers or Stars — that comes out of the West.

“It starts with training camp and the belief in this group that we weren’t going to be satisfied just making it to the Stanley Cup Final,” said Bennett. “We put in a lot of hard work to get back here, and it took a lot. But again, we’re not satisfied yet. We still have a job to do.”

As Tkachuk said, the Panthers were perfectly fine with last year’s short offseason because that’s what they want every year.

“There’s nothing better than playing hockey in June,” Tkachuk said. “Just a lot of motivation, dedication, commitment. The right pieces were added, some great pieces added, and just one mindset of doing whatever it can to get back to it. And I thought the guys that were here last year have done an unbelievable job coming back for the start of camp with this on their mind.

“So we are not done yet. We’re very happy with the way this playoffs has gone for us winning the first three (rounds), but it’s a different feeling this year for sure.”

How Imagine Dragons became the sound of gaming culture

Dan Reynolds loves video games. The game companies love him back.

we butter the bread with butter tour 2024

A decade ago, former games journalist Geoff Keighley was busy planning the first Game Awards, a project to build some prestige and pomp around video game award ceremonies.

He had already booked famed Nintendo composer Koji Kondo to perform on piano a medley of songs from the Legend of Zelda franchise, but he wanted a little more sound to fill the Las Vegas stage. And then he remembered: A young band called Imagine Dragons was climbing charts and fresh off a memorable Grammys performance with Kendrick Lamar . The Las Vegas group would become Kondo’s backing band .

“That Koji Kondo moment was super fun and last minute,” Keighley recalls to The Post. “It was a combo of the show being in Vegas, their hometown, and knowing they’re big gamers.”

Imagine Dragons has been all over gaming culture ever since. Of all the band’s accomplishments — filling stadiums and arenas, even performing Beatles songs in front of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr — playing with Kondo remains a highlight, says the band’s frontman Dan Reynolds. He didn’t grow up listening to the Beatles, he grew up listening to the “Athletic Theme” from “Super Mario World.”

“I geeked out harder on that than when we played in front of McCartney,” Reynolds says.

Reynolds says the band’s ties to gaming trace all the way back to when publisher Ubisoft asked to use its song “Radioactive” on trailers for the 2012 game “Assassin’s Creed III.” Reynolds loved the series and gave the green light right away.

Since then, various game companies have kept approaching the band. Epic Games’ iOS game “Infinity Blade III” featured the band’s name and song “Monster” (a collaboration that first caught Keighley’s attention, leading to the Game Awards show). In 2017, Nintendo created a Super Bowl trailer to launch the Switch console with the band’s hit single “Believer.” Riot Games and Netflix commissioned the band to write “Enemy,” the theme song for the hit animated series “Arcane,” now approaching 1.5 billion streams on Spotify.

“It’s not like we’re going around knocking on doors,” Reynolds says, laughing. “They just started reaching out, and we said, ‘Absolutely, this is amazing.’ Look, I’m really tall, 6 foot 4, never played sports, always did music and drama, so people probably think I’m not a gamer, but it’s my bread and butter. It’s our world.”

Reynolds grew up playing old-school adventure games published by Sierra Entertainment, then became a big fan of Blizzard games like “Warcraft,” “StarCraft” and “Diablo.”

“Then ‘Dark Souls’ took over my life,” Reynolds says, adding that the band is always gaming on tour. “We’ve been late onstage because we’re playing ‘League of Legends.’” (Leaving a multiplayer “League” match early can result in a ban, so the band doesn’t risk it.)

Last year, the band released “Children of the Sky,” a collaboration with composer Inon Zur for the launch of “Starfield,” a marquee Xbox game that lets players explore about a thousand planets. Again, it happened because someone from Bethesda Game Studios emailed the band’s manager about a collaboration.

Imagine Dragons returned to the Game Awards stage in 2021 to perform “Enemy” and a medley of songs from indie studio Supergiant Games. Reynolds says it’s been amazing to see the event eclipse the viewing audiences of other awards shows including the Oscars.

“Geoff just reached out to us and was like, ‘I don’t know how this is going to go, and I’m just shooting from the hip here, you guys want to be a part of this?’ And we were like, oh yeah,” he says. “And then it’s blown up over the last years. He’s such a kind person, so it’s made me so happy to see good people win.”

Now the band is about to release its sixth studio album, “Loom,” on June 28. It features more of the band’s signature sound: danceable anthems drenched in reverb and soaring choruses. The latest single, “Nice to Meet You,” is a fun, funk-inflected dance track about Reynolds’s experience with a partner’s friends getting involved in their dating life.

“I grew up listening to singer-songwriters — Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens. But I love pop music,” Reynolds says, explaining the airy, upbeat feel of the record. “I like to create big choruses and songs that I want to hear, and I happen to be in a healthier, happier place with this record, so hopefully that’s reflected in it.”

Many Imagine Dragons lyrics revolve around Reynolds’s struggle with depression. Hype classics like “Thunder” are about Reynolds gassing himself up despite overwhelming self-doubt. He admits that “Eyes Closed,” the first single this year (the chorus: “I could do this with my eyes closed”) is empty boasting and bluster that hint at inadequacies he still feels.

Criticism of the band tends to focus on the tension between its marketability and its supposed place in rock music. The Imagine Dragons sound is radio-friendly, approachable and clean, perfect for marketing material. And Reynolds’s choruses are so catchy and concise, you could easily imagine them backing an Apple product launch. iPhone 16 Plus Max? Nice to meet you.

At the same time, Imagine Dragons is one of the few remaining mega acts filling arenas with a real-life electric guitar loud and visible onstage. Critics of the band jeered when the group topped Billboard’s rock charts . Reynolds, for what it’s worth, agrees with them. He owns being a pop act.

“I really think the sentiment of Imagine Dragons ‘keeping rock alive’ is kind of a silly sentiment,” he says. “When I think of rock, I think Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age. I think of a very specific genre that I love, but that’s not what Imagine Dragons has ever wanted to be or tried to be, and it’s not our influences. I didn’t really listen to any classic rock growing up!”

Of course he hears the criticism, but Reynolds says he and the group are happy with their signature sound. They write all their songs based on personal experiences, he says. He focuses on pop hooks, citing classical composers like Chopin and Bach, whom he describes as “very pop.”

“I can genuinely say we’ve never created a record where we’re saying, ‘What do you want, critics? What do you want to hear right now?’” Reynolds says. “I just write songs I want to play. If I’m going to perform them for the next two years, I’d better like them. We’re trying to make sounds that feel good on the ears and make you feel something. And all I’m doing is writing about what’s going in my life. And this happens to be a happy time period.”

And many times, that will mean writing music for the hobby and entertainment medium he’s loved since he was a kid.

“My MO from the very beginning is just following the kid in me. What would little Dan Reynolds love to be a part of?”
