The best travel mugs: reusable and eco-friendly coffee mugs

These best travel mugs are perfect for commutes and long meetings.

Best travel mugs

The best travel mugs are a great idea, what with the world turning its back on unsustainable single-use cups. Grabbing one of the best reusable coffee cups will help you cut back on what you send to landfill. Plus, you can choose something that suits your preferences for size and how it feels to drink from. If you're making a brew in the morning, they're also a great way to save money.

Lots of our best travel mugs picks are also properly insulated, so they'll keep hot drinks warm for longer. If you tend to wolf your drinks down right away and just need something to hold them in, you might not be bothered about that. But if you want something to help you get through a longer commute or last for an afternoon-long meeting, it's a big bonus.

We've even included a smart mug in our list, with a heating element and battery, which will keep your drink at the exact temperature you want – perfect for the coffee connoisseur.

We've focused on the lids and leak-proofing parts of lots of these cups, because a big part of how satisfied you are will come down to how much of a hassle a mug is to drink out of… and you'll definitely be unhappy if it leaks in your bag.

Our reusable coffee cup picks range from the hyper-secure to the casual, across a range of prices. Some have clever engineering, some have beautiful aesthetics, some are made from ingenious sustainable materials, but all are great ways to get your coffee fix. Read on for our top picks, and also see our guide to the best travel accessories for designers .

Best travel mug: Tefal Travel Mug Grande

01. Tefal Travel Mug Grande

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This Tefal Travel Mug is the best travel mug because it’s an unbeatable balance of temperature-holding, size, price and leakproofness (which is definitely a real term you’ve heard before). The black rubbery middle band adds texture for gripping. To drink, you press a button in the centre of the lid, which pops up to open a gap, and you can then drink from any side without sloshing. Press it again to seal it from leaking. It’s dishwasher-safe too. If you want something no-nonsense and large, this is it.

A blue Acera Liven Harmony travel mug

02. Acera Liven Harmony

It's not the biggest travel mug in the world, but the Acera Liven Harmony might be one of the most stunningly designed. With an intricately textured stainless steel outer shell available in a wide range of colours, and a glazed ceramic inner lining, the sensation of a premium travel mug is immediate and intense.

The screw-top lid is adorned with a beautiful sigil, and the triple-wall insulation makes sure drinks from minus-20 to a plus-100 degrees Celsius maintain their temperature for hours. Also, I personally felt that the ceramic inner lining made water in particular taste more natural than from mugs with a metal inner lining. Yes, it's not the cheapest, at $99, but you won't find anything more beautiful.

Best travel mug: Contigo West Loop Autoseal Travel Mug

03. Contigo West Loop Autoseal Travel Mug

We’ve chosen the bigger version of this Contigo West Loop mug, because we know that sometimes starting the day requires a lot of help, but you can get a smaller version of Contigo’s Autoseal mugs if you don’t think half a litre of coffee is strictly necessary. The real trick here is the big Autoseal button – press it when you’re drinking and it opens a valve, so you can pour happily. Don’t press, and nothing comes out. The single-press-and-release system is a small thing, but those who drink on the go will struggle to switch back to anything with a more fiddly method of securing the cup once you’ve tried it. Even better: we like the simple curves and metal of its stainless steel build, and it comes in a really great range of matt and metallic finishes. We’re especially partial to ‘gunmetal’ and ‘latte’, pictured above.

Best travel mug: 3. T2 Explorer Infuser Travel Mug

04. T2 Explorer Infuser Travel Mug

For those who refuse to be without their favourite loose-leaf blend, T2 has you covered. Lacking insulation, this T2 Explorer mug isn’t designed to keep things warm for hours (T2 does make proper vacuum flasks, if that’s what you want), but is made from durable Tritan tempered glass. You can obviously fill yourself a big hot drink with your favourite tea in the stainless steel infuser, but the large size means you could drop in ice cubes and brew an iced tea of your choice, equally. A flip-open lever stopper keeps things from spilling, but we like how easy it is to just pop your thumb under and ping it open.

Best travel mug: bioGo Cup Reusable Rice Husk

05. bioGo Cup Reusable Rice Husk

This bioGo Travel Mug isn’t so much intended for keeping your coffee warm over long periods, but if you just want something for drinking on your commute, its double-wall insulation will be enough. But that’s not really why you go for it anyway: being made from rice husks, its green credentials are second to none, and this also makes it incredibly light – just 180g for this 450ml version (a smaller 350ml is also available). It’s textured for a secure grip, and a simple flip-open half-ring on the lid stops spills. We like the flecked design in fetching pastel tones (plus a more vibrant yellow option).

Best travel mugs: Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug 2

06. Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug 2

This Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug is the most expensive mug on our list by a long way, but that’s because it’s the only one that has an actual heating element, rather than just relying on physics. You can use a dial on the bottom of the mug to choose a temperature between 48.9°C and 62.8°C, and the mug will keep your drink at that exact temperature until the battery runs out – perfect if you’re a real connoisseur who’s a stickler for that kind of detail. And if you place it on its charging coaster, the battery will never run out, so you could disappear to an all-day meeting and come back to a drink that’s still at the perfect temperature. The design is plain (but good), and and it’s pretty heavy, but it’s impossible to overstate how magic it feels to drink coffee that’s always at exactly the right temperature – it will even cool freshly made coffee more quickly down to that temperature before keeping it there. Genius.

Best travel mugs: KeepCup Cork Brew

07. KeepCup Cork Brew

KeepCup’s claim to coffee fame is that its reusable glass cups are “barista-standard”, made of a tempered Tritan glass that calls to mind your favourite coffee shop that won all those awards. The cork ring of the KeepCup Cork Brew keeps your hands from burning, and is made from a sustainable material – and there’s definitely an appealing truth-to-materials aesthetic of the cork and glass together. It comes in a shorter 227ml size too, or a larger 455ml option, but this middle-ground is just right for most.

Best travel mugs: Alessi Caffa Travel Mug

08. Alessi Caffa Travel Mug

No design-conscious kitchenware list is complete without an entry from Alessi. The simple, gleaming stainless steel of the Alessi Caffa Travel Mug looks fab, and there are a few different colours of top – we especially like the lightness of the white and metal combo, but the red and brown both use stronger hues to great effect. There's a big cover to the lid you need to flip open to drink – good for leakproofing, but maybe a tad more effort than some others here. It was designed by Giulio Iachetti, who’s done beautiful work for the likes of Moleskine and Lavazza, among others.

Best travel mugs: Leon Bamboo Fibre Travel Mug

09. Leon Bamboo Fibre Travel Mug

If you want to keep it super-simple, cheap and largely environmentally sound, grab this cup from a brand that admittedly means a lot more to London commuters than it does the rest of the country. This LEON Bamboo Fibre Travel Mug is made from bamboo fibre, as you might have surmised, and has a protective ring to keep your hand from overheating, because there’s no insulation here. Similarly the top doesn’t seal totally closed at all – there’s a permanent hole. It’s basically a reusable alternative to a disposable cup, and for this cheap price, that’s fine with us.

Best travel mugs: Stojo Brooklyn

10. Stojo Brooklyn

Stojo’s simple travel mug telescopes down into a smaller puck shape for stashing in a bag when it’s empty, and then you pop it up when needed. It’s a smart design, and while it means there’s no insulation for long-term heating, it does have a fully leak-proof sliding lid design, and a heat sleeve that collapses right with it. We love the pale colours it comes in – very Smeg – as well as the bolder variants.

Tested by Layla Khoury-Hanold

Having a go-to travel mug you love in your kitchen cupboard is the wardrobe equivalent of a goes-with-everything jacket. It’s dependable, durable and functional, and it expresses your personal style and lifestyle needs. Toting coffee or tea from home can save you money, whether you’re hustling on your morning commute, out for a morning hike or handling school drop-off. When you do stop for a cuppa, whether it’s at your neighborhood coffee shop or at the airport, a reusable travel mug can also help cut down on plastic and paper cup waste.

Most of us shop for travel mugs online, but we found there’s a lot to be said for being able to hold the mug in your hands and take a sip from it. These are a few things to look for when shopping for travel coffee mugs online while browsing product images, descriptions and manufacturer claims. We broke down a list of our favorite mugs we tested and what to look for the next time you invest in a new travel mug.

How We Tested

We purchased 10 top-rated travel coffee mugs according to various online sites, reviews and bestseller rankings. We tested travel coffee mugs across a range of price points in a variety of sizes, from 14 ounces to 24 ounces. We also tested models with and without handles and different styles of lids, including thumb-sliding lids, push-button lids and twist lids.

First, we assessed the design and construction of the travel coffee mug. We noted what materials the body and lid were made of and whether the mug felt durable. To assess the mug’s measurements, we noted how many ounces of liquid the mug held and whether it easily fit in a kitchen cabinet. To evaluate the design, we tested to see if the mug fit in a standard-size cup holder and noted whether the lid locked or closed while not in use.

We observed if the mug came with a manual or paperwork to explain how to use the mug. We also noted if there were any assembly instructions or recommended steps prior to first use, such as washing and drying. We also reviewed the care and use instructions to determine if the mug was dishwasher safe and assessed how easy it might be to clean.

We also recorded any special claims, including leak-proof or spill-proof design, how many hours it promised to keep beverages hot for, no-sweat design, shatter-resistant or dent/drop-resistant construction, non-slip silicone base and comfort grip handles. We also noted whether the mug came with a warranty and, if so, how long it lasts and what is covered.

We conducted the food test in two parts, first a boiling water test and then a taste test.

For the boiling water test, we added 12 ounces (the equivalent of two standard cups of brewed coffee) of boiling water to the travel mug and noted the temperature using an instant-read thermometer and recorded the temperature to a tenth of a degree. We then added the lid to the mug and checked the water temperature after 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, and 6 hours, with the lid on. (Depending on the design of the mug, some mugs required removing the lids to take the water temperature.) If a mug came with a claim to keep water hot for a longer period, such as 9 hours or 12 hours, we tested that too. We also noted each time whether the base of the cup was too hot or cold to handle — all of the mugs were easy to hold throughout the whole test.

For the taste test, we brewed coffee and added the coffee to the travel mug. When the liquid was cool enough, we took a sip through the lid. We noted any strange, metallic or plastic tastes. We waited 30 minutes and tasted the coffee again by sipping it through the lid. Again, we noted any strange or unpleasant flavors.

Here we noted whether any of the parts (mug body or lid parts) were dishwasher-safe. Most of the travel mugs we tested had dishwasher-safe lids, but many of the painted bodies required hand washing. A couple of the most durable models were completely dishwasher-safe. We also noted how easy the mugs were to wash and dry by hand, observing how easily the coffee washed away from the interior of the mug body as well as how easy it was to reach the bottom of the mug. Most manufacturers recommend hand washing parts in warm, soapy water, rinsing and drying thoroughly and then storing the lid and body separately.

This article has been reviewed since its original publish date for accuracy, pricing and availability. We stand by our list of top travel coffee mug picks.

travel mug robert dyas

  • Durable, no-sweat, shatterproof construction
  • Double-wall vacuum insulation for hot and cold beverages
  • 6-hour heat retention
  • Magnetized slider-lid prevents spills
  • Wider mug may be challenging to hold one-handed for those with smaller hands

The YETI Rambler won top marks for its durable 18/8 stainless steel body construction, 6-hour heat retention and ease of cleaning. The manufacturer boasts its shatter-resistant construction and double-wall vacuum insulation and backs it all up with a five-year warranty. It comes in a variety of colors, finished with their proprietary DuraCoat color that also promises a no-sweat design. Both the lid and the body are dishwasher-safe, no matter the color finish. This mug is a little wider than most, making it easy to wash up by hand. Those with smaller hands may find it challenging to drink from the mug one-handed for a prolonged period.

  • Material Stainless steel
  • Lid style Slide-lock
  • Dishwasher-safe Yes

travel mug robert dyas

  • Great value
  • Rubberized grip for one-handed drinking
  • Snap-close seal prevents spills
  • Tall height doesn’t fit in standard cupboard or Keurig
  • Hand-wash only for mug body (unless unpainted model)
  • Only keeps liquids hot for 3 hours

This mug packs a lot of value for the cost. It was the least expensive mug we tested but is made from durable stainless steel and BPA-free plastic and has a capacity of 24 ounces or the equivalent of four cups of coffee. We liked the addition of a rubberized grip on the exterior of the mug, making it easy to drink one-handed. It also comes with an easy on-off lid and snap-close seal to prevent spills. Though it claimed to keep liquids hot for 9 hours, we found that it only kept boiling water hot for 3 hours. Because of its height, it doesn’t easily fit in a kitchen cabinet or when using a standard Keurig coffee maker. Only the lid and unpainted body are dishwasher-safe. Painted body models are handwash only, and the narrow opening means you’ll need a long-handled brush to properly reach the bottom of the mug. This model comes with a limited lifetime guarantee.

  • Material Stainless steel and BPA-free plastic
  • Lid style Snap-close
  • Dishwasher-safe Yes; lid and unpainted body only

travel mug robert dyas

  • Kept liquids hot for 6 hours
  • Flex-strap handle attaches to lid
  • Easy to disassemble and reassemble lid parts
  • Higher price tag
  • Doesn’t fit standing up in standard cupboard or Keurig

This durable travel mug is made from 18/8 professional-grade stainless steel and a BPA- and toxin-free plastic twist-open lid and strap. In testing, it kept liquids hot for 6 hours, a boon for long-haul flights or to take you from school drop-off to pick-up. The manufacturer claims that this model keeps liquids hot for 12 hours, though we noted during testing that by the 12-hour mark the temperature was merely warm. We liked the addition of the flex-strap handle attached to the lid, which makes it easy to transport and comfortable to carry (you could even clip it into a carabiner on a backpack). It comes in a variety of colors, backed by the manufacturer’s color-last coating; you can also customize the design by choosing the color for the cap, strap and bottle. This model is dishwasher-safe, though handwashing is recommended. We liked how easy it was to disassemble and reassemble the numbered lid parts and the rubber gasket slots right in. Because of the design and narrow opening, you’ll need a long-handled brush or sponge to properly reach and clean the interior. Because of its height, it doesn’t fit standing up in a kitchen cupboard or in a standard Keurig coffee maker. Overall, this mug was one of the most expensive models we tested, but its performance matches the price tag and buyers can rest easy knowing it comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

  • Material Stainless steel and BPA- and toxin-free plastic
  • Lid style Twist-open

  • Double-walled, vacuum sealed and copper-plated insulation
  • Non-slip, scratch-free silicone base
  • Spill-proof slide-lock lid
  • Comes in more than 40 colors and patterns

We loved that this travel coffee mug had a more traditional mug-like shape and comfortable handle, which is ideal if you like to feel like you’re drinking out of a real mug. It’s made from 18/8 professional-grade stainless steel, has a sturdy slide-lock plastic lid to prevent spills and a non-slip silicone base that’s also scratch- and noise-free when you put it on a countertop. It boasts triple-insulated technology that includes a double-walled, vacuum sealed and copper-plated insulated mug. It lived up to its promise of keeping liquids hot for 3 hours; even after 6 hours it still registered a warm temperature. Note that you’ll need to wait a minute before putting the lid on the mug, or the lid will pop up likely because of the extra-hot temperature. The mug and lid are dishwasher safe on the top rack but are easy to wash and dry by hand, too. If you need a mug that goes from commute to desk, or a good work-from-home coffee mug that’ll keep your beverage hot all morning, this is your best bet. We like the assortment of more than 40 unique colors and patterns, making this a great gift-giving option, too.

  • Sleek, contemporary and compact design
  • Excellent leak-proof protection
  • Keeps liquids hot for 6 hours
  • Angled sipping spout for ease of drinking
  • Hand-wash only
  • Slim opening makes it hard to clean
  • Rubber gasket challenging to put back on lid after washing

This mug delivers quality construction, heat-resistant performance and a sleek, contemporary design in one compact mug. It’s made from 18/8 professional-grade stainless steel and feels sturdy yet lightweight. Its double-wall insulation promises to keep drinks at their optimal temperature and prevent condensation. After 6 hours, we noted that the liquid temperature was still very hot. We liked the angled sipping spout, which allows the user to easily control the beverage flow. It has excellent leak-proof protection with a user-friendly twist-on lid and a lockable, push-button cover that snaps closed. Note that the push button is located right under the sip opening, which may be cumbersome if you wear lipstick. This model is hand-wash only; because of the slim opening, it’s challenging to get to the bottom of the mug with a regular sponge. The rubber gasket under the lid easily removes but can be challenging to get back in (make sure you have it right-side up). This model also comes in a variety of colors and designs. It comes with a lifetime warranty. If you’re into doing good while you shop, this company also gives back more than 10% of its profit.

  • Dishwasher-safe No

travel mug robert dyas

  • Versatile design; can double as serving vessel
  • Spill-proof, magnetized slider-lock lid
  • Wide mouth doesn't keep beverages hot for as long

This heavy-duty mug is made from durable, professional-grade 18/8 stainless steel and has a sturdy, proprietary magnet-sliding lid that is smooth to open and close yet spill-proof. The style and design remind us of a classic camping-style mug; in addition to using the mug to sip your morning coffee, it could easily double as a serving vessel for camp fare like baked beans and chili or for ice cream sundaes and cocktails at home. The mug keeps liquids hot for 3 hours with the lid on; because of the wide mouth, it doesn’t retain heat as well as other mugs. The mug and lid are dishwasher safe though the wide opening makes the mug easy to wash and dry by hand. Take extra care when washing the slider-style lid by hand to ensure removal of stains and any buildup, which is particularly important if you take milk products or sweeteners with your coffee or tea. As with other YETI models, this mug is made with a no-sweat design, DuraCoat color and shatter-resistant construction and comes with a 5-year warranty.

travel mug robert dyas

  • Kept liquids hottest the longest during testing
  • Safety lock on lid prevents spills
  • Streamlined design

Although this mug wasn’t one of our top picks, if you need to keep your beverage hot for a long period of time, this is your mug. During testing, it kept boiling water the hottest the longest; after 6 hours, the water was still very hot, registering nearly 145 degrees F. The heat retention performance is backed by a 5-year warranty.

  • Lid style Flip-open

What to Consider Before Buying a Travel Mug

  • Size: Think about how much you need your travel mug to hold; 12 ounces is the equivalent of two standard cups of brewed coffee or tea. The average travel mug size is 16 ounces. Consider how much storage space you have and check listed measurements against the space between shelves in your kitchen cupboard. We found large mugs didn’t always fit in our cabinets. Finally, double-check product descriptions to see if the mug will fit in a standard-size cup holder or backpack pocket.
  • Material: Mugs made from 18/8 professional-grade stainless steel tend to be the most durable. Some models have rubberized grips on the body and non-slip silicone finishes on the bottom which can be helpful for rushed mornings. Lids are typically made of plastic; latches or button closures can be made from plastic or metal.
  • Exterior Finish: Some of the models we tested had both lids and mugs that were dishwasher-safe, but some manufacturers noted that only unpainted models are dishwasher-safe. Look for manufacturer claims touting a durable, long-lasting coat or condensation-free finish.
  • Lid Style: These can include flip lids, thumb-sliding lids, push-button lids and twist lids. If you need something leak-proof, opt for a twist lid. If you need to be able to operate and drink from your mug one-handed, a flip lid or push-button lid is a good bet. Note that mugs with slider-style lids can be tricky to clean, particularly if you take your beverage with milk products or sweeteners.
  • Leak-Proof vs. Spill-Proof: If you plan to stash your mug in a bag, look for leak-proof claims and observe the construction. Does it have a twist-lid and/or latch closure or button closure? Do you need to press a button to take a sip? Spill-proof (or splash-resistant) means that it’ll keep liquid from sloshing out but isn’t up to the task of preventing leaks when mugs are stowed in a bag.
  • Cleaning: In addition to noting whether your favorite mug is dishwasher-safe, you’ll want to note whether the lid parts come apart for thorough cleaning, including rubber gaskets and models with special sealing features. Lids can get moldy and smelly if not cleaned thoroughly. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions to maximize performance and durability.

The need for caffeine in the world of work cannot be understated.

Indeed, I write this on my second cup of steaming hot Joe this morning, and that's before the clock has even struck 11am.

We’re not saying it’s particularly healthy that such a substantial proportion of the workforce needs a shot or two of piping-hot liquid gold every morning, but it’s certainly something to ponder.

Of course, some enjoy coffee in a slightly healthier, more artisan manner. We’re talking about the folks who enjoy the occasional cuppa as a treat, alongside a sweet bite like a cronut, or a cruffin – or some other strange pastry hybrid sensation.

Hot coffee and tea can also warm you up from the inside out whether you're commuting or flinging yourself around in the name of sport in horrible weather.. Like TikToker Ben Kielesinski, who always enjoys a cup of coffee with a view somewhere in the Canadian wilderness. How we’d like to be him.

No matter how you consume your hot drink of choice – be it coffee , herbal tea , hot chocolate or even soup – chances are you’d like that drink to remain hot wherever you’re sipping it. In fact, 90 per cent of the reason that I’m already two cups of caffeine down, is because my first serving cooled far too quickly.

The answer to all our collective, rapidly cooling hot drink woes? A vacuum-insulated flask.

What is a vacuum-insulated flask and how does it work?

Think of a vacuum flask as a cup within a cup. The space between the two vessels is evacuated of any air, creating a partial vacuum. This reduces the ability for heat to be conducted away, and it is therefore retained within the innermost vessel.

In your search for the perfect vacuum insulated flask, you might have also seen the gadget referred to simply as a ‘thermos’. The contraption soared in popularity after the eponymous American brand launched the very first Thermos product in 1904, after its founders domesticated the vacuum insulated technology which had been pioneered by Scottish scientist Sir James Dewar in 1892. As such, the term for a hot water flask has become synonymous with Thermos .

Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: a lifetime guarantee

First and foremost, we thought it fitting to include the vintage-inspired flask that Ben Kielesinski uses in his many adventure TikToks. Named the ‘legendary classic’ for a reason, this durable and reliable flask is made from BPA-free stainless steel and equipped with double-walled vacuum insulation. Available in either a 1L or 1.9L capacity, we were instantly drawn to its attractive sage green hue.

It’ll keep your hot drinks hot, and your cold drinks cold, for a whopping 24 hours, and is also dishwasher safe. It’s a winner in our eyes.

Ocean Bottle x Wild Nutrition

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: saving the planet

Every time one of these insulated bottles is purchased, funding is provided for the collection of the equivalent of 1,000 bottles worth of plastic from the coastline. Available in a beautiful deep turquoise hue thanks to a limited-edition collaboration with Wild Nutrition, this bottle is made from stainless steel, recycled ocean-bound plastic, is vacuum insulated, and has an integrated cup with a dual-opening for easy refilling.

Hydro Flask (355ml) Coffee with Flex Sip Lid

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: good looks

A little shorter than your cult classic double-walled vacuum insulated Hydro Flask, this 354ml option is designed specifically for keeping your favourite hot drinks safe, secure and at the optimum drinking temperature. Equipped with a handy leak-proof, flex sip lid, this model – like all Hydro Flasks –is also made from BPA free materials and is dishwasher safe.

Thermos 470ml Stainless Steel Flask – Red

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: a tried-and-true classic

You simply can’t go wrong with purchasing an insulated flask from the one and only Thermos. This cherry red option keeps its contents hot for 18 hours, or cold for 24 hours. The integrated stainless steel serving cup keeps your beverage extra warm while you’re sipping away, and we’re big fans of the fact that you can pour hot drinks without removing the twist stopper—which further prevents any heat from escaping.

Homealexa Vacuum Insulating Travel Mug

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: a hi-tech, yet value for money option

With almost 4,000 positive reviews for this hi-tech vacuum insulating flask, we simply couldn’t believe the bargain price. The integrated LED screen displays the real-time temperature of your beverage, which is especially helpful for the eager beavers who often burn their tongues after some risky guesswork regarding just how hot their drink actually is.

It’s powered by a high-performance lithium-ion battery which intelligently functions on low power at all times, which means you’ll only need to replace the battery – at the very least – every two years. It keeps drinks hot for six hours, and cold for five hours.

Thermos Ultimate Flask 900ML / 900ML Pouch Set

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: extra warmth and protection

Another option from the iconic Thermos brand, this 900ml flask and pouch set is perfect for keeping your hot drinks extra hot during lengthy outdoor excursions and camping trips. Unlike many stainless-steel flasks, this one is remains cool to the touch even with the hottest of contents inside, making it suitable for clipping right onto your belt with the handy carabiner clip which is attached to the included pouch.

Sigg Tea Set Small White

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: tea lovers

A sophisticated and sleek design for herbal tea lovers, this set comprises of a 500ml double-walled 18/8 stainless steel bottle and a 300ml travel mug made from the very same materials. Designed and engineered in Sweden, both products are additionally equipped with a copper plating on the inside, which aids in insulation and also prevents the vessels from being hot to the touch.

Thermos Mondial Flask - 1.8L

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: a long coffee break with a pal

Stay caffeinated through all manner of outdoor adventures with this nifty portable flask which comes with two cups so you can share with the friend you like the most. It can hold nearly two litres which should be enough for eight rounds of coffee, tea or whatever beverage takes your fancy. Stays hot for 12 hours and cold for 24.

S’well Stainless Steel Traveler

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: long-term temperature maintenance

Short and stout, this 470ml insulated bottle works equally as well at keeping the temperature just right for hot drinks as well as cold. In fact, get this: S’well claims the triple-layer of insulation and vacuum seal will keep drinks chilled for 24 hours, and hot for 12 hours. Impressive, any way you slice it.

Insulated flasks with integrated coffee makers

Gsi outdoors microlite commuter java press.

travel mug robert dyas

Best for: an integrated French Press

Though at first glance this product looks just like your standard insulated flask, what sets the Microlite Commuter Java Press from the others is hinted at in the name. It’s got a hidden, integrated French press for making the freshest coffees on the go, no matter where you are. Granted, you’ll still need to add hot water to coffee grounds either at home before your excursion, or using a portable kettle and stove while you’re out camping. Once that’s done, simply re-insert and push down the

Wacaco Minipresso NS Portable Espresso Machine

travel mug robert dyas

This funky, Nespresso pod compatible device provides extra-hot, fresh espresso without the need for electricity. Nope, we couldn’t believe it either.

Simply pop your pod in, and manually crank the semi-automatic piston. The device has an integrated, insulated hot water compartment which feeds piping hot liquid through the pod filter to create a fresh full-bodied espresso.

However, you can also purchase an extra-large Minipresso tank via Amazon to create longer coffees which require more hot water, such as Americanos.

Which Is The Best Reusable Coffee Cup? We Tried Them All For You

Senior Editor of commercial partnerships, HuffPost UK

travel mug robert dyas

We’ve all had our fingers burned (sometimes literally) by reusable c offee cups that don’t measure up. And while we want to protect the planet , we’d also like our coffees to remain warm and not leak all over our bag on the way to work.

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to buying a cup, including: price, size, material and colour, to name but a few. So we road tested a selection of the most popular makes on the market, as well as some lesser-known options, to help you make the right choice for you.

KeepCup Brew Cork edition, KeepCup, £19

travel mug robert dyas

Sophie Gallagher, Life reporter

I was an early adopter of the commute flask back in 2014 (when it was nerdy not cool) but without a dishwasher I found it hard to wash properly by hand and eventually gave up. So it was about time I got back on the wagon.

I’ve been trying out the small KeepCup cork edition, which holds 227ml – what turns out to be a decent amount of tea for a 30 minute journey. Any more and the risk of spilling it everywhere feels too much. I love the way it looks – that glass is Instagrammable as heck – and found it very easy to drink from. Although my partner kept trying to hold the glass cup instead of the cork padding and burned his fingers – so it’s not idiot proof.

I’ve heard KeepCups have been known to leak but I didn’t find that, although I was really careful and washed it out in the sink at work and dried it before putting it back in my bag, which could possibly get annoying longer term.

Tea from a flask can sometimes starts to absorb the taste of the vessel after a while, too, which is rank. I didn’t get that from this, and the glass was really easy to wash by hand. Bonus points.

Overall, would definitely keep using this, and for less than £20 it feels like a good affordable option.

Buy it now .

Stojo Collapsible Cup Blue, Waitrose, £10

travel mug robert dyas

Brogan Driscoll, editor of HuffPost Finds

As someone who has a stupidly small handbag that I use on the weekends, I still find myself buying coffees in disposable coffee cups rather than lugging a bulky coffee cup around (sorry planet). The main appeal of the Stojo is that it’s collapsible and, when folded, fits snugly away into the smallest spaces (even my coat pocket), giving me no excuse to contribute to landfill. It’s even made from food safe, recyclable materials – so I feel very smug.

I spend my weekend demonstrating to friends how the BPA-free silicone base folds up into the white plastic lid (the detachable white plastic sleeve tucks nicely inside). So not only is it good for the planet, but a source of light entertainment.

It doesn’t leak and keeps my hot drink at a decent temperature for the best part of an hour. Any longer and it starts to get a bit tepid. It’s a decent size at 355 ml and is dishwasher and microwave safe. And at just a tenner, this is a bargain.

A word of warning: the silicone gets quite hot, so make sure you grip the plastic sleeve to protect your fingers – perhaps not the best option around kids. Would highly recommend, particularly for people with small bags and no small children.

rCUP Leakproof Travel Cup Grey/Blue, Waitrose, £12

travel mug robert dyas

Francesca Syrett, HuffPost International

As someone who wants to do my bit for the planet, I’m drawn by the fact that this cup is made from used cups. Not only am I stopping more waste being created by using a reusable, but am repurposing previously-used cups destined for landfill. But once I open the packaging and read the leaflet, I learn it’s only 40% of the cup I can be smug about – the inside is still made from virgin plastic, which feels a little misleading.

My hot tea warms the cup slightly without being too hot, making it nice to hold my freezing hands against. That said, it is a little on the slippery side and I wish there was something else to grip on. I like the size (it’s massive at 340ml) and price, but as someone who likes their hot drinks boiling, it doesn’t keep my tea hot enough for my hour commute.

This would be good for someone who has a shorter travel time or likes their drinks cooler.

Happier, ecoffee cup, £10.95

travel mug robert dyas

Natasha Hinde, Life reporter

This doesn’t feel like your average coffee cup. Made from natural fibre, corn starch and resin, it’s almost like strong cardboard – but retains hot liquids like a boss. The lid is made with matte, food-grade silicone which is latex-free and has a little stopper that prevents liquid from spurting out of the area you drink from which, in my experience, is the area which causes the most damage when you’re walking along and hot liquid escapes onto your hand.

The one letdown is that even after giving it a good wash before using it, it does make your tea taste different. With coffee, there’s a possibility the flavour would manage to overpower the slightly cardboard-y taste, but with tea, that’s not really the case. I still drank the lot though.

Major redeeming points are the funky pattern (a distraction from the dismal weather outside), and the sleeve that’s made from the same material as the lid, which helps you from burning your mitts when you’re carrying it about. It’s big at 400ml and is dishwasher friendly, which appeals to my slovenly side. It’s also quite good value, too.

Does it retain heat though? One hour after making my cuppa, the tea was tepid so I wouldn’t advise leaving it too long on your commute.

Contigo West Loop Bottle, Robert Dyas, £24.99

travel mug robert dyas

Lucy Pasha-Robinson, deputy editor for Blogs

Unlike the vast array of colourful coffee cups you can now find on the high street, the Contigo thermos would be best described as utilitarian – black metal, with grey and chrome detailing. It’s not sparking the level of joy I was hoping for.

But as we know, you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and I’m glad I gave this cup a chance because it does work hard. It’s completely leakproof, both where the lid screws on and the spout, due to a handy locking mechanism. I chucked it in my handbag in the morning filled with coffee and by the time I got to work and settled in to drink it an hour later, there had been no spills and the coffee was still piping hot.

While the lid of this thermos is dishwasher proof which is a nice perk, the cup part isn’t. But I’d rather it was that way round, especially as the cup is sleek with no hidden nooks, making it easy to clean.

While I think the quality of this flask is gold standard, I would feel uncomfortable about paying £25 for a coffee cup. It just feels quite steep. That being said, you get what you pay for and this does feel like it’s designed to last. Overall, I’d say this is a really useful cup for those who don’t mind prioritising substance over style.

Original Reusable Cup, Frank Green, £19.99

travel mug robert dyas

Amy Packham, assistant editor for Life

I’m a big fan of how this cup looks – I love the colour, I love the shape, and I love the size. It’s small, which fits my coffee of choice: a flat white.

The cup doesn’t leak, at all, which is all down to the design. You press the circle button on the top down to open a small hole on the lid, click it back up again and the hole’s closed. It takes some getting used to because it’s not angled towards your mouth like most coffee cups, but I manage.

It does what it says on the tin, it keeps drinks hot enough for your commute or for a weekend walk. When I poured the white coffee at 7.15am, it was still warm enough at 8.15am when I arrived at work. The downside, I guess, is that the internal mechanism is best washed in the dishwasher, so if you don’t have one it could be a pain. The company also suggests washing with “warm and soapy water” which I tried once, but it still smelt of coffee after washing.

The final issue is price. At £20 it is more expensive than other coffee cups out there but I know I’ll get years of use out of it.

Huskup Reusable Eco Cup in pebbles, Lakeland, £9.99

travel mug robert dyas

Louise Whitbread, Life reporter

This is made from rice husk rather than plastic but there isn’t a notable difference in texture or durability and it’s able to hold 400ml of coffee, which is great considering my beverage of choice is a double shot latte (gimme that caffeine hit). It comes with a silicone sleeve which works well to stop you burning your hands and the silicone lid doesn’t have an unpleasant taste.

There’s no spillage as I commute to work on the tube (despite the fact we’re packed in like sardines), but the cup does leak a little when I used it in the car going over speed bumps. All of that is totally manageable, until I pop it in my bag after use and the lack of a seal means the last coffee dregs seep out when it’s not standing upright.

My coffee stayed hot throughout my journey, which is just over 40 minutes long (10 of those consist of a walk in the freezing cold). It looks brand new after a cycle in the dishwasher, plus it’s microwave friendly. You can also wash it by hand. I don’t think it’s unreasonably priced and the biodegradable packaging is a nice bonus. Looks wise, it’s not particularly chic but considering how well it kept my drink warm and how easy it was to use and clean, I can deal with that.

While I do think this is a great cup, if you’re happy with a plastic reusable coffee cup, there are much cheaper options available if you’re not prepared to spend over a tenner.

Buy it here .

‘The Panda’ GoReusable ECO CUP, GoReusable, £10.99

travel mug robert dyas

Nancy Groves, Life editor

I’m a recent tea to coffee convert. Blame Australia, land of the flat white – and also of the disposable coffee cup. My first was a KeepCup and now I have a sleek Frank Green number (both of them Aussie brands), so I was intrigued to test this UK make.

The ECO CUP touts its green credentials – inspired by ‘Blue Planet II’, it’s made of recycled Bamboo from chopsticks. That’ll explain the cute panda logo. The bamboo has a matte look and grip, almost like thick cardboard, and a less plasticky taste than most, keeping my coffee a reasonable temperature for my 40 minute commute. Big ticks. I’m less keen on the silicon lid, though, which doesn’t feel 100% secure and attracts fluff in my bag. The white cup also smudges easily, though it’s washable (and available in other colours).

At half the price of my Frank Green, it’s a British bargain, but also twice as big (400ml) as it needs to be for my flat white so probably better suited to latte lovers. And because it looks like a regular disposable mug from a distance, you won’t get that smug feeling on your commute. I know I’m not the only one.

Thermos ThermoCafe Zest travel mug, Robert Dyas, £7.99

travel mug robert dyas

Stephanie Bossett, video producer

I’m the kind of person that will arrive three hours early at the airport, but I’ll always leave five minutes late for my train, so finding a coffee cup I can run with is pretty important.

The ThermoCafé cup is not leak-proof, but it does have a handle, making it possible to light jog without getting coffee all over yourself. And it means you can hold other things with that hand, like the glove I’m definitely going to leave behind on the train.

The cup kept my coffee hot for at least 20 minutes, which covered my walk (sprint) to the station, and then some. I didn’t get coffee all over myself when I drank from it (bonus) and although you can’t chuck it in the dishwasher, it takes mere seconds to clean. Would run in panic to the station with it again – and at £7.99 it’s pretty good value.

Add extra height.

A free-standing shelf creates bonus cupboard space which always comes in handy in a busy kitchen.

Our advice? Store mugs on the top shelves and everything you'll need for your coffee and tea making underneath. This way, you have everything that you need within easy reach.

Use spare walls.

If you have an unused corner in your kitchen, you have what it takes to create a stylish and functional coffee nook.

Mugs and baskets full of tea bags and coffee pods can then find a home on these savvy rails and hooks, so they double up in practicality.

Go vertical.

Creating visually pleasing storage doesn't have to be complicated. All you need is a piece of wood and some nails to create a pretty organiser that takes full advantage of tall walls.

Don't trust yourself with the DIY? Simply buy pre-made shelves from your favourite homeware stores to attach to your walls . Just make sure that they are sturdy enough to hold your mugs, though!

Use a trolley.

A trolley makes it easy to move your coffee station as needed. Keep it in your kitchen for everyday use, then wheel it to the dining room for after dinner parties.

While you can opt for a trolley that's specifically designed for the kitchen, a bar cart is another great multi-use option. Like shelving, store your mugs on top with your coffee and tea essentials stored underneath.

Rotate your mugs.

To keep your mugs looking pretty, rotate them regularly to have different ones on display and shake things up a little.

Buy a tree stand for your mugs and place it on your countertop, so you can simply spin it to display your favourite mugs whenever you like.

I nstall a pegboard.

The best thing about pegboard organisation is that you can rearrange it regularly to play a part in your kitchen decor .

Either hang mugs in a straight row or, for a more laid-back and modern style, display your mugs randomly for a look that invokes modern art.

Try a wire basket.

Seagrass and fabric baskets are so popular and stylish at the moment, featuring in many people's homes.

For mugs, try a wire basket. This will keep your mugs stored upright to ensure they don't break, while providing a more unusual, industrial-style look that will fit perfectly in more modern kitchens.
