Vacation Assurance Program

For peace of mind, we encourage you to invest in Travel Advantage Network’s Vacation Assurance Program (VAP). Should anything happen requiring you to change or cancel your vacation, VAP guarantees protection against the loss of reservation fees and/or vacation weeks in the form of credits back into your account, subject to the following guidelines:

VIP Client Program

  • VIP Pre-paid/Express week booking*: $100
  • VIP Split week booking: $75
  • Excess Inventory week booking**: $50

  • VAP may NOT be used to cancel and rebook a reservation for the same destination/area at an Excess Inventory or special promotional price.
  • VAP must be paid at the time of booking and is not available for purchase at a later date. If VAP is not purchased at the time of booking, your reservation is final and no credits will be provided in the event of cancelation.
  • If any change is made to a reservation where VAP has been purchased, then the VAP on that reservation is considered used.  If you wish to purchase VAP on the reservation that was changed, you may, however the VAP that was used is null and void and cannot be transferred to the changed reservation.  This covers any and all changes that are made to a reservation.

We just returned from Florence, Italy this past April with Angelique Thibaux. We stayed at the Residenza Conte Di Cavour & Rooftop for 4 nights. We saved 466 euros in total!

Thank you Travel Advantage for allowing us to travel more often.

Me Dubai By Melia in the center of Business Bay in Dubai, a very good location, with an excellent quality/price ratio: 600 € instead of 1600 € for 8 days in this 5-star hotel!

We spent a night in Granada, a lovely city. We stayed in a 3-star hotel in the old town square paying only €49 for 2 people, saving a lot of €40 compared to the public platforms!!! Kind and helpful staff and a clean and distinctive hotel!

Thank you Travel Advantage and MWR Life, for allowing us to visit this city, spending very little.

Travel Advantage : How to Access and How It Works

In this article, I'll explain to you how to save money while traveling using the revolutionary platform Travel Advantage, and perhaps even how to start a business and make money in this continuously growing industry.

Travel Advantage is a travel platform that offers significant discounts to its users. What is the secret of these advantageous offers? It eliminates intermediaries in the tourism industry, unlike other more well-known platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, and Trivago, allowing it to offer discounts of up to 80% compared to them.

How Travel Advantage works: Subscriptions

The platform is accessible by invitation only. You will find the invitation links at the bottom of the page. Once invited, you become a member and can choose from several membership options.

We have 3 memberships: VIP , PLUS , ELITE .

  • VIP : Save on your travels, 15 Immediate Guest Passes, Monthly Guest Passes, Allows for 1 Additional User (i.e. booking for another person). Price $19.97 per month.
  • PLUS : 60 Monthly Loyalty Points, Access to Life Experiences®, Access to Lifestyle Mall (for online shopping), 25 Immediate Guest Passes, 10 Monthly Guest Passes, Allows for 2 Additional Users. Price $59.97 per month.
  • ELITE : 120 Immediate Loyalty Points + 120 Monthly Loyalty Points, save on hotel bookings compared to Booking, Expedia, Trivago, and other popular platforms. Earn travel credits for every booking. Only with "Elite" do you have access to all services, 50 Immediate Guest Passes, 20 Monthly Guest Passes, Allows for 4 Additional Users. Price $119.97 per month (monthly fees can be waived by enrolling 3 new members)

What do travel credits and loyalty points mean?

Travel credits are rewards that you earn when making a booking with your VIP, Plus, or Elite membership. These credits can be used to reduce the price of your next booking. For example, if you earned 1000 travel credits from a hotel booking, you can use these credits to reduce the final price of your next booking by $10.

On the other hand, loyalty points are available exclusively for Plus and Elite memberships. These points are worth the same as the monthly membership fee. If you are an Elite member, for example, you will earn 120 new loyalty points every month. Each loyalty point is worth $1 and can be redeemed to reduce the final price of your bookings.

Non-changable + Non-Refundable Terrible

Had to sign up for a membership to book a ticket that was non-refundable, and they declined my name change request for my ticket, despite Delta saying that they haven't declined any name change requests (as my username is not my full name and it doesn't let you change the name in the app) Customer service is responsive on the app but there are no UK phone number and they have not been accommodating with trying to find any solution despite selling me a ticket that now cannot be used by anyone or changed which doesn't make any sense. I have been trying to change the name on my ticket for over 3 weeks leading up to my flight and they keep declining my name change and telling me my ticket is nonrefundable. terrible company do not use.

Reply from Travel Advantage

Hi A.Yaw T. Coker, I hope you're doing well. We were looking through your case, and your feedback provided herein, and we find that there are some details that are being left out here, and that it is fair to inform the reader of said details. First of all, you signed-up on your own free will on March 6th, 2023. You had 14 days to review our system and request a full refund of your enrollment if you didn't agree with our policies. We show the cancellation policy for anything that you are booking or purchasing on our website BEFORE you make the purchase, and not only that, but you are also prompted to click on a checkbox stating that you've read our booking cancellation terms in order to be able to proceed with the booking. The cancellation policies for flights are a sentence long, and they very simply state that flight bookings made in our system are not refundable. You saw this before booking. The name that you entered when you filled out the booking form was not the same name that you have on your passport. Why did you do this? We don't know, but regardless of what website you use to book a flight, the name always needs to match that of the travel document that you will present at the airport. We don't make these rules, they are general rules in the air travel industry. Regardless of this, when you contacted us, we immediately got in contact with the air ticketing agency and the airline directly. We spent hours in chats and calls with both parties, and neither one accepted to change the name on the booking, process a refund or proceed with a date exchange, because of their own policies and the fare rules that applied to the booking. This is not our responsibility, and we know that our team did everything possible to get a solution for you even though the error was on your end. We have everything documented on our end. I hope this helps readers to better understand the case.

Many Thanks to Prescilla

I was doubtful initially but not anymore!

I was doubtful initially but with a bit of searching everytime, I am absolutely gobsmacked! Everytime with a bit of patience and being flexible with dates. Travel Advantage is always cheaper, way cheaper than other travel booking platforms! Well worth my membership. Their customer service is close to none! I m not gonna name other booking platforms I used before for my hotel or apartment bookings but none of them called me to see if everything was alright with everything! At last some companies are becoming human again.

How Medicare Advantage can deliver health care when you’re on the road

travel advantage disdetta

Is travel an essential part of your retirement experience? If so, then you’ll need to do some planning. That includes making sure you have the right Medicare coverage. Luckily, there are many different Medicare plans to consider that may offer you coverage during your travels.

So, whether you’re preparing for a month in France, a winter in Florida or a weekend away from home, you can get the peace of mind that comes from packing the right health coverage for your journey.

Exploring the United States

Medicare can provide excellent health coverage during your travels in the United States. Original Medicare, which is what many people call the combination of Medicare Parts A and B, is widely accepted by health care providers across the country. You just need to confirm that the provider you see accepts Medicare before you receive your care.

“Medicare Advantage plans can be an excellent option for travelers who want coverage while on the road. But members should check with their plans regarding the level of coverage they have while away from home.”

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans can also be a good way to get health coverage while on a trip. MA differs from Original Medicare in a few important ways. MA plans are sold by private companies, and many offer benefits not included in Original Medicare, like dental, vision and hearing coverage. MA plans also include a network of providers. In Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans you generally need to use one of the health care providers in network to get coverage for a service. Members of Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans have coverage when they see providers who are out of their plan’s network, although they usually pay more.

Fortunately, there are MA plans that have networks that include doctors in many different parts of the country. That means if you pick the right MA plan, you’ll be able to find a care provider in your plan’s network in many of the places you travel in the U.S. In fact, we offer a number of MA plans designed to provide you with coverage while traveling.

Comparing coverage away from home

Comparing coverage away from home

However, to be completely certain of the level of coverage you will receive while on the road, it’s important to check with your plan regarding the coverage you have before beginning your travels.

A home away from home

Does travel means spending an extended amount of time in your second home or with family or in a long-term vacation rental? During these longer stays, you may need to take an even closer look at your MA coverage.

Medicare Advantage is a national program, but MA plans are offered to individuals based on their ZIP codes. That means you are only eligible to remain in a particular MA plan if you are in a ZIP code where that plan is offered. In fact, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require that members be disenrolled from their MA plan if they live outside their plan’s service area for more than six months.

However, there are MA plans designed to allow you to stay on your plan even if you spend significant time outside the plan’s service area. Aetna offers MA plans with a visitor travel program. This program allows you to remain in your plan for an extra six months on top of what CMS rules allow when you live outside your plan’s service area.

Medicare Advantage HMO plan

How to make sure your Medicare Advantage HMO plan travels with you

Monique C. has a Medicare Advantage HMO plan from Aetna that includes the Travel Advantage feature. Travel Advantage allows Monique to remain in her plan for an extra six months when out of her plan’s service area. It also offers a multistate provider network. She lives in Florida but is planning to spend three months in New York to visit her grandchildren. Here are some steps she should take to enjoy her coverage away from home.

Before she leaves Florida she should:

  • Confirm there is a primary care provider (PCP) in New York who is in her plan’s network and is taking new patients.
  • Find a hospital near where she will be staying in New York that is in her plan’s network.
  • Locate a preferred pharmacy in New York near where she will be staying.
  • Pack a digital or paper copy of important medical records.

When she arrives in New York she should:

  • Change her PCP to a local doctor in her plan’s network.
  • Take her medical records with her if she sees her local PCP.
  • Make sure other providers are in her network if referred by her local PCP.

Medicare Advantage HMO plan

Regardless of which MA plan you choose, it’s important to remember that you still need to follow your plan’s rules while enjoying an extended stay away from home. For example, if your plan requires you to have your PCP refer you to a specialist for care, you need to make sure you select a new PCP near your second residence. Otherwise, you could have difficulty getting referred to a specialist when you need one.

Foreign travel

Are you planning travel outside the United States? You should be aware that Medicare coverage can be very different when abroad. For instance, Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover any type of health care while you’re traveling outside the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. There are some exceptions, like a few specialized cases where Medicare may pay for services that you get on board a ship within the territorial waters adjoining the land areas of the U.S. But for the most part, you have no coverage for any health care you receive abroad with Original Medicare, including emergency care.

International coverage comparison

International coverage comparison

Original Medicare

What you need to know

  • Provides coverage for any physician who accepts Original Medicare across the U.S.
  • Generally does NOT provide care outside of the U.S.

Medicare Advantage

  • Provides coverage for any doctor in the Medicare Advantage plan’s network
  • Provides emergency and urgent care outside of the U.S.
  • Generally does NOT cover any follow-up procedures after urgent/emergent care while abroad

Before you travel outside the U.S., talk with your plan provider or insurance agent to get more information about your coverage while traveling.

International coverage comparison

There are Medicare Advantage plans that offer forms of coverage for emergency care and urgent care services during foreign travel. However, coverage and rules vary, so it is important to check with the plan administrator or insurance agent to determine the details of your foreign coverage before you travel.

Pack your prescriptions

Getting your prescriptions while on the road is a key part of maintaining your health. That’s why certain MA plans come with a national pharmacy network that allows you to pick up your prescription medications across the United States.

Having a preferred pharmacy network with nationwide reach can save you both time and money when it comes to getting your prescriptions while away from home.

Hit the road

Are you dreaming of traveling once you retire? A big part of turning that dream into a reality is choosing the plan that best meets your health needs while you are on the road. An MA plan can be the right choice for coverage, giving you extra benefits and access to travel-related perks. However, you need to do your homework to pick the plan that best fits your needs. After all, the right plan is one of the most important items you can take with you on your adventures.

Aetna Medicare is a HMO, PPO plan with a Medicare contract.  Our SNPs also have contracts with State Medicaid programs. Enrollment in our plans depends on contract renewal. Out-of-network/non-contracted providers are under no obligation to treat Aetna members, except in emergency situations. Please call our customer service number or see your Evidence of Coverage for more information, including the cost-sharing that applies to out-of-network services. The formulary, provider and/or pharmacy network may change at any time. You will receive notice when necessary. Plan features and availability may vary by service area.

Do not travel to Russia due to the unpredictable consequences of the  unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces , the potential for  harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials , the  arbitrary enforcement of local law ,  limited flights into and out of Russia , the  Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia , and the possibility of  terrorism .  U.S. citizens residing or travelling in Russia should depart immediately.  Exercise increased caution due to  the risk of wrongful detentions.

The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates.

There have been numerous reports of drone attacks, explosions, and fires in areas in Western and Southern Russia, particularly near the Russian border with Ukraine, as well as in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the event of an emergency, U.S. citizens should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately.

In September 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens to the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine. Russia may refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship, deny their access to U.S. consular assistance, subject them to mobilization, prevent their departure from Russia, and/or conscript them.

U.S. citizens should note that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia, and options to electronically transfer funds from the United States are extremely limited due to sanctions imposed on Russian banks. There are reports of cash shortages within Russia.

Commercial flight options are extremely limited and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The U.S. Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist U.S. citizens to depart the country and transportation options may suddenly become even more limited. Click  here  for Information for U.S. Citizens Seeking to Depart Russia.

U.S. Embassy personnel are generally not permitted to travel on Russian air carriers due to safety concerns.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the air safety rating for Russia from Category 1 to Category 2 on April 21, 2022, due to Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport noncompliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) prohibiting U.S. aviation operations into, out of, within, or over those areas of the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW) and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. For more information, U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices .

The right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not consistently protected in Russia. U.S. citizens should avoid all political or social protests and not photograph security personnel at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who have participated in demonstrations and there are numerous reports Russian nationals have been detained for social media activity.

Country Summary:

U.S. citizens, including former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private citizens engaged in business who are visiting or residing in Russia, have been interrogated without cause and threatened by Russian officials, and may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion.

Russian security services may fail to notify the U.S. Embassy of the detention of a U.S. citizen and unreasonably delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services are increasing the arbitrary enforcement of local laws to target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”

Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on spurious charges, singled out U.S. citizens in Russia for detention and harassment, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret trials or without presenting credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities arbitrarily enforce local laws against U.S. citizen religious workers and have opened questionable criminal investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia to perform work for or volunteer with non-governmental organizations or religious organizations.

There have been multiple security incidents in southwestern Russia related to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government declared martial law in Russia’s regions bordering Ukraine (Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Krasnodar) on October 20, 2022. The martial law regime allows the rapid introduction of restrictive measures such as curfew, seizure of private property, restriction of entry/exit and freedom of movement, internment of foreigners, forced relocation of local residents, and restrictions on public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.

Recent legislation has expanded the ability of Russian authorities to detain, question, and arrest individuals suspected of acting against Russia’s interests, including posts on personal social media accounts, engaging with foreign and international entities, discrediting the Russian state or military, as well as advocating for the rights of LGBTQI+ persons.

Terrorist groups, both transnational and local terrorist organizations, and individuals inspired by extremist ideology continue plotting possible attacks in Russia. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs and systems, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Travel to the North Caucasus (including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus) is prohibited for U.S. government employees and strongly discouraged for U.S. citizens.

The international community, including the United States and Ukraine, does not recognize Russia’s purported annexation of Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya – that Russia has purported to annex more recently. There is extensive Russian Federation military presence in these areas. Russia staged its further invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea, and Russia is likely to take further military actions in Crimea, and the four other Ukrainian oblasts are the subject of intensive fighting. There are continuing abuses against foreigners and the local population by the occupation authorities in these regions, particularly against those who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv continues to provide consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya, although the ongoing conflict severely restricts the Embassy’s ability to provide services in these areas.

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

What to do in Moscow

Ballet at the bolshoy, cathedral of christ the saviour, drinking & nightlife, entertainment, house-museums, the museum of modern history, the new tretyakov gallery, novodevichiy convent, patriarch’s ponds, the pushkin museum of fine arts, sandunovsky baths, the tretyakov gallery.

Travel in Moscow is easier than you might think: the city’s general layout is a series of concentric circles and radial lines emanating from Red Square and the Kremlin, and the centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Moscow’s sights can also be mapped as strata of its history: the old Muscovy that Russians are eager to show; the now retro-chic Soviet-era sites such as VDNK and Lenin’s Mausoleum; and the exclusive restaurants and shopping malls that mark out the new Russia. A CityPass is a good bet if you plan on seeing several of the city's heavyweight attractions.

Despite its size, Moscow's concentric layout is easier to grasp than you'd imagine, and the city's famous metro ensures that almost everywhere of interest is within fifteen minutes' walk of a station. Red Square and the Kremlin are the historic nucleus of the city, a magnificent stage for political drama, signifying a great sweep of history that includes Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Stalin and Gorbachev. Here you'll find Lenin's Mausoleum and St Basil's Cathedral, the famous GUM department store, and the Kremlin itself, whose splendid cathedrals and Armoury Museum head the list of attractions. Immediately east of Red Square lies the Kitay-gorod, traditionally the commercial district, and originally fortified like the Kremlin. Stretches of the ramparts remain behind the Metropol and Rossiya hotels, and the medieval churches of Zaryade and the shops along Nikolskaya ulitsa may tempt you further into the quarter, where you'll find the former headquarters of the Communist Party. Take a private Kremlin tour to skip the lines for the Kremlin grounds and cathedrals.

The Kremlin and Kitay-gorod are surrounded by two quarters defined by rings of boulevards built over the original ramparts of medieval times, when Moscow's residential areas were divided into the "White Town" or Beliy Gorod, and the humbler "Earth Town" or Zemlyanoy Gorod. Situated within the leafy Boulevard Ring that encloses the Beliy Gorod are such landmarks as the Bolshoy Theatre and the Lubyanka headquarters of the secret police – with its "KGB Museum" – while the Zemlyanoy Gorod that extends to the eight-lane Garden Ring is enlivened by the trendy old and new Arbat streets, with three Stalin skyscrapers dominating the Ring itself.

Beyond this historic core Moscow is too sprawling to explore on foot. Krasnaya Presnya, Fili and the southwest describes a swathe which includes the former Russian Parliament building (known as the White House); Tolstoy's house and the Novodeviche Convent and Cemetery; Victory Park, with its war memorials and Jewish museum; and Moscow State University in the Sparrow Hills – the largest of the Stalin skyscrapers.

Across the river from the Kremlin, Zamoskvorechye and the south are the site of the old and new Tretyakov Gallery's superlative collection of Russian art. Private guided tours are recommended for art enthusiasts. Here too you'll find Gorky Park, the Donskoy and Danilov monasteries that once stood guard against the Tartars, and the romantic ex-royal estates of Tsaritsyno and Kolomenskoe – the latter known for staging folklore festivals and historical pageants.

Taganka and Zayauze, east of the centre, likewise harbour fortified monasteries – the Andronikov, Novospasskiy and Simonov – and the erstwhile noble estates of Kuskovo and Kuzminki, but the main lure for tourists is the Izmaylovo art market. Inside the Izmaylovo Kremlin, a cultural centre, there are also a range of attractions, from the Bread Museum and the Vodka History Museum to the fascinating Museum of Russian Toys.

Moscow's Northern Suburbs cover a vast area with a sprinkling of sights. Foremost is the Memorial and Museum of Cosmonautics and VDNK. For anyone interested in the glory days of the space race, and its monumental landmarks and propaganda, a visit is a must, like on this guided tour . In the vicinity are the Ostankino Palace, Moscow's Botanical Gardens and TV Tower. West from here, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines will appeal to visitors with an interest in Soviet social history, too.

Outside Moscow there's scope for day-excursions to the Trinity Monastery of St Sergei, the Abramtsevo artists' colony, Tchaikovsky's house in Kiln, Lenin's estate at Gorki Leninskie, and the battlefield of Borodino, where the battle is re-enacted every September. You can also head out to the village of Aksakovo for a beautiful two-hour troika ride. Further afield, the historic towns of Vladimir and Suzdal are graced by splendid cathedrals and monasteries attesting that they were the seat of a principality when Moscow was merely an encampment. Suzdal is one of the loveliest towns in Russia, and definitely merits an overnight stay. It's also possible to visit the Aviation Museum at Monino air base, en route to Vladimir, if you take the trouble to get permission ahead of time.

While Moscow's Bolshoy Ballet (also spelt "Bolshoi") is going through uncertain times, plagued by infighting and rivalries (not least the recent acid attack on Artistic Director Sergei Filin), few would deny themselves the chance to see this legendary company. During the season, evening performances start at 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at noon; there are no shows on Monday.

You can see what’s on currently and for a few months ahead on the Bolshoy’s website – although the English version sometimes lags behind the Russian one. The ballet company is usually abroad over summer and sometimes also in the autumn, leaving the junior corps de ballet to entertain visitors – although star dancers are certain to be in Moscow for the opening of the new season in September. For more on Russian ballet visit www.for-ballet-lovers-only.com . For those not interested in ballet but more in the historical aspect of the Bolshoy theatre, take a guided historic tour of the grounds.

If you're more interest in Folk Dances, visit the Kostroma Folk Dance show , the most authentic one in Moscow.

Built as a symbol of gratitude to divinity for having aided the Russians’ defeat of Napoleon in 1812, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (daily 10am–6pm), opposite the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 15, was demolished in 1931 in favour of a monument to socialism. The project was soon abandoned and years later, under Krushev’s rule, the site was turned into the world’s largest public swimming pool. In 1994 the Cathedral was rebuilt and is now a symbol of Moscow’s (and Russia’s) post-Communist religious revival.

Moscow isn’t a city that goes to bed early. Many venues act as a café by day, restaurant in the early evening, and both bar and club at night. This can cover anything from an arthouse café with a spot of live music to a dance warehouse, or a fancy nightclub with a restaurant and casino. Most cater to a certain crowd, whether it’s creative professionals, students, shell-suited "flatheads" or designer-draped models. While formal dress codes are rare, face control (feys kontrol) is widespread. Russians distinguish between “democratic” face control (aimed at keeping out hooligans and bandits), and the kind that favours the rich (never mind how they behave). It’s unwise to rile club security staff, however rude they might be.

There are scores of trendy bars and clubs on Krasny Oktyabr, a former chocolate factory building located across the river from Kropotkinskaya and now home to some of Moscow’s hippest nightlife.

Learn how to walk, talk, drink and party like a Russian on a small group with Russian spirits.

Moscow's gastronomic scene has improved enormously over the last five years, with hundreds of new cafés and restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine and surroundings, aimed at anyone with a disposable income – from mega-rich New Russians and expense-account expatriates to fashion-conscious wealthy teenagers.

For cheap eats head to a canteen, where you can compile a tray of dishes smorgasbord-style. Take advantage of the great-value business lunches offered by cafés and restaurants during the week between noon and 4pm.

For well over a century, Moscow has been one of the world’s great centres of classical music, opera and ballet, most famously represented by the Bolshoy Theatre but also by its orchestras and choirs. Theatre can be tricky for non-Russian speakers though circus and puppetry surpass the language barrier. Moscow’s film industry and annual international film festival dwarf St Petersburg’s, but at other times most cinemas screen Hollywood blockbusters.

All this can be surprisingly good value, provided you ask for the cheapest ticket available ( samiy deshoviy bilyet ).

Gorky Park on ul. Krymskiy Val 9 (R100; Park Kultury) is a large park occupying an area of over 700 acres along the river. In the winter the frozen-over paths become one of the city’s largest ice rinks, while in the summer Muscovites stroll the area savouring an ice cream.

Admirers of Bulgakov, Chekhov, Gorky and Tolstoy will find their former homes preserved as museums. Anton Chekhov lived at Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya ul. 6, in what is now the Chekhov House-Museum (Tues, Thurs & Sat 11am–6pm, Wed & Fri 2–8pm; R100, student R60; Barrikadnaya), containing humble personal effects, while the Gorky House-Museum (Wed–Sun 11am–6pm, closed last Thurs of the month; free; Arbatskaya) on the corner of Povarskaya ulitsa and ulitsa Spiridonovka is worth seeing purely for its raspberry-pink Art Nouveau decor. Leo Tolstoy admirers should head to the wonderfully preserved Tolstoy Memorial Estate on ul. Lva Tolstogo 21 (Tues, Wed & Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs 1–9pm, Sat & Sun 11am–6pm; R200, student R60; Park Kultury) where the Tolstoy family lived after moving to Moscow from their country estate in 1881, and where the novelist wrote War and Peace . The Bulgakov Museum at Bolshaya Sadovaya ul. 10 (Sun–Thurs 1–11pm, Fri & Sat until 1am; free; t 495/970-0619; Mayakovskaya), is the house where the novelist lived from 1921 to 1924. There are nightly tours (1–6am; R550; phone a week in advance for tour in English).

The Museum of Modern History at Tverskaya ul. 21 (Tues, Wed, Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs & Sat 11am–7pm, Sun 10am–5pm, closed last Fri of the month; R100; Tverskaya) brings the Communist past alive with striking displays of Soviet propaganda posters, photographs and state gifts, although there’s a frustrating lack of English translation.

Opposite the entrance to Gorky Park at Krymskiy Val 10, the New Tretyakov Gallery (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Park Kultury) takes a breakneck gallop through twentieth-century Russian art, from the avant-garde of the 1910–1920s to contemporary artists. Full and illuminating commentary in English is a bonus.

A cluster of shining domes above a fortified rampart belongs to the lovely Novodevichiy Convent (daily 10am–5pm; closed Tues & last Mon of month; R150; Sportivnaya), founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1524. At its heart stands the white Cathedral of the Virgin of Smolensk. In its cemetery lie numerous famous writers, musicians and artists, including Gogol, Chekhov, Stanislavsky, Bulgakov and Shostakovich.

One of Moscow’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Patriarch’s Ponds is a pleasant spot (there’s actually just one pond) for a summer stroll or an ice-skate on its frozen waters in the depths of winter. The area is also known for being the location of the opening scene of Mikhail Bulgakov’s magical realist novel The Master and Margarita .

Founded in 1898 in honour of the famous Russian poet, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 12 (Tues–Sun 10am–7pm; R150–300, separate fee for Impressionist wing; Kropotkinskaya) holds a hefty collection of European paintings , from Italian High Renaissance works to Rembrandt, and an outstanding display of Impressionist works.

Get the city grit out of your skin at the exquisitely elaborate Sandunovsky baths (Neglinnaya ul. 14 bldg 3–7 w www.sanduny.ru ; Teatralnaya), patronized by Muscovites since 1896. Join Russian businessmen and socialites in the banya , a wooden hut heated with a furnace, where you are invited to sweat out impurities, get beaten energetically with birch twigs, and finally plunge into ice-cold water. Men’s and women’s baths are separate, with the women’s section more like a modern spa. A three-hour session costs R1000. Daily 8am–10pm.

Founded in 1892 by the financier Pavel Tretyakov, the Tretyakov Gallery at Lavrushinskiy per. 10 (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Tretyakovskaya) displays an outstanding collection of pre-Revolutionary Russian art. Russian icons are magnificently displayed, and the exhibition continues through to the late nineteenth century, with the politically charged canvases of the iconic realist Ilya Repin and the Impressionist portraits of Valentin Serov, including The Girl with Peaches , one of the gallery’s masterpieces.

To see Soviet triumphalism at its most prolific, visit the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, or VDNKh (Prospekt Mira; VDNK/Prospekt Mira), with its statue upon statue of ordinary workers in heroic poses. Adding to the scene is the permanent trade-fair-cum-shopping-centre housed in the grandiose Stalinist architecture of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition of 1939, and the People’s Friendship Fountain, flanked by Soviet maidens, each symbolizing a Soviet republic. One of the most hubristic Soviet monuments ever built is the Space Obelisk , which bears witness to Soviet designs on the stratosphere. Unveiled in 1964 – three years after Gagarin orbited the earth – it’s a sculpture of a rocket blasting nearly 100m into the sky on a plume of energy clad in shining titanium. Moscow’s giant Ferris wheel, small amusement park and numerous food vendors help to create a fairground-like atmosphere. For a fantastic view over the VDNK, take the lift to the 25th floor of Hotel Cosmos across Prospekt Mira.
