22 Best Things To Do In Rincón, Puerto Rico (2024)

  • Things To Do

Rincón is the surf capital of Puerto Rico.

But it has more to offer than just perfect waves.

Being from Puerto Rico, I know Rincón well because it is my second home.

In this article, I will cover the 22 best things to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico:

1. Learn to surf

You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy what Rincón offers.

But when you see all those surfers having fun, you will want to learn to surf.

image of a guy surfing at Rincon

Rincón Surf School, Surf787, and Puntas Surf School are a few options.

For more information, check out my article on the Top Surf Spots In Puerto Rico (most are in Rincón).

2. Scuba dive

Scuba diving in Rincón is an activity you have to try.

You can scuba dive in Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, where you will meet some turtles, fish, and other marine life.

image of scuba divers in Rincon

The most significant Elk Horn Coral Community of Puerto Rico is in Steps Beach — scuba diving among it is an unforgettable experience.

If you are not a certified SCUBA diver, don’t worry, you can become one with an open water diver course.

Read our article Best Dive Sites In Puerto Rico for more information.

One of the best snorkeling spots on the main island of Puerto Rico is Steps Beach at Rincón.

Tres Palmas Marine Reserve is home to parrot fish, blue tang, surgeonfish, and many others.

image of 2 girls snorkeling at Rincon

You will also interact with turtles and spiny lobsters.

Some companies offer snorkeling tours. Learn more about snorkeling by reading our article Best Snorkeling Spots in Puerto Rico , where Tres Palmas made the list.

4. Paddle board

In Rincón, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea unite.

Beaches are unique and suitable for several water sports.

Paddle boarding is one of the fastest-growing activities in Rincón.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Rincon Paddle Boards (@rinconpaddleboards)

Some companies will rent you a paddle board, give you paddle board classes and even take you on tour.

Watching the sunset on a paddle board in Rincón is a great experience.

Maria’s Beach is an excellent place for paddle boarding and paddle board surfing.

If you like fishing, come to Rincón.

Rincón has the perfect fishing experiences, from rod and reel fishing on Kayak, spearfishing, and even deep-sea fishing near the uninhabited island of Desecheo.

Mahi Mahi, Tarpon, Snook, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna are fish you can catch in Rincón waters.

6. Swimming

El Balneario of Rincón (Rincón Municipal Beach) is a great place to swim.

A roped-off area is safe for kids and adults alike.

The Balneario offers free parking, restrooms, showers, and an option to rent gazebos.

image of El Balneario of Rincon

Exercise caution while swimming — there are no lifeguards on duty on this beach.

Always remember the universal water safety rule; “never alone.”

There is a small shopping center near the Balneario where you can buy souvenirs and food and have artisanal ice cream.

7. Whale watching

From January to March, humpback whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) come to tropical waters to rest, mate, and care for their calves.

You can see these magnificent animals if you are patient and lucky. Some companies offer sunset boat whale-watching tours.

Check out whale watching in Rincón in the following video:

You can also try to see the whales from the lighthouse El Faro Punta Higuera.

If you are a Certified Open Water Scuba Diver, take the boat trip to dive at Desecheo. On that tour, chances are that you will encounter some humpback whales.

8. Mountain bike

If you like mountain biking, visit Rincón Domes MTB Trail.

This trail is about 3.8 miles (6 kilometers) and can be pretty challenging.

The uphill and downhill sections of the trail will test your abilities.

Below is a video showing Domes MTB trails at Rincón:

Go to Tres Palmas Marine Reserve/Steps Beach for a more relaxing and less challenging mountain bike trail.

9. Take a hike

If you are a walker, you will love Rincón. Take a refreshing morning walk or a relaxing afternoon hike.

You can walk in Sandy Beach, hike on Tres Palmas Marine reserve or stroll down the streets of the town square.

image of Tres Palmas Marine Reserve

Córcega Beach stretches for more than a mile for a great walk.

10. El Último Brinco (The Last Jump)

On road 411, you will find El Ultimo Brinco waterfall and swim hole.

The last jump is like an oasis in the middle of a residential area.

Steep rock walls surround the waterfall.

image of El Ultimo Brinco waterfall

Sometimes you will see locals jumping off the rock to the swimming hole.

El Ultimo Brinco is one of Puerto Rico’s best waterfalls.

For more information, check out the Best Waterfalls In Puerto Rico .

11. Visit the lighthouse

A trip to Rincón is only complete with a visit to Faro Punta Higuera. There is a small park around the lighthouse.

image of Faro Punta lighthouse

You will get a great view of Domes and Marías Beach, and y ou can also buy refreshments and artisan-made souvenirs.

The lighthouse is the best place to watch whales from January to March. They have free parking space at the lighthouse.

On Weekends there is a piraguas (shaved ice cone) cart.  Try the coconut-flavored piragua.

12. Eat fresh seafood

There are several restaurants in Rincón where you can eat the catch of the day.

Go to Maria’s Beach if you like oysters, clams, and octopus salads. Close to the beach, you will find what looks like a hot dog cart but is an oyster stand. In addition, several places sell empanadillas de mariscos (seafood turnovers).

If you are staying in an Airbnb or another place where you have access to a kitchen, try buying freshly caught fish at La Pescaderia (Rincón Fish Market)

13. Join a conservation effort

Steps Beach is one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico.

The community has been fighting to protect it for decades. On January 2004, the government designated the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve to protect this area, a huge win for nature enthusiasts.

The TPMR is the most significant conservation effort in the Islands of Puerto Rico.

image of Steps Beach, PR

Surfrider Foundation Rincón Chapter has an army of volunteers that conserve the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. You can join the conservation effort by volunteering, donating, or buying something at The SRF Rincón store.

Surfrider Foundation Rincón allows you to become an environmental protector and be part of a larger-than-life movement.

For more information, visit Rincón Surfrider .

If you arrive in Rincón with a lot of stress, this town will help you. Rincón is a laid-back place.

Time goes by slowly in the town of beautiful sunsets.

Get a beach chair or a hammock and head to the beach.

Let the sound of the waves and the sea breeze help you relax.

Many people from the United States mainland have moved to Rincón and brought their lifestyles with them. Yoga and Pilates are big in Rincón.

There are several places where you can practice yoga in Rincón.

image of yoga class in Rincon

You park, walk a few steps to the beach and immerse yourself in this ancient practice.

The beach will enhance your yoga session.

If you practice Pilates, you can join a class and work out with a certified teacher.

16. Workout

You will notice that people in Rincón are very fit. They have plenty of places to exercise.  You can walk, run, jog, hike, or visit a gym.

Rincón has one of the most committed CrossFit communities in Puerto Rico. If you are into Crossfit, go to one of Rincon’s Boxes, and you will have a great workout.

Check out the video below to see one of the free, outdoor tracks in Rincón:

17. Farmer’s Market

El Mercado Agro-Ecologico or The Rincón Farmers Market opens on Sunday at 9 am.

In The Farmer’s Market, you will find various locally grown products.

image of Rincon Farmers Market

Most, if not all, of the products you find in RFM, are organic. They also have locally prepared food and pastries.

Who would have thought they could find Falafel and Jack fruit in Rincón?

Don’t have breakfast before going to the Farmer’s Market.

18. Artisan Night

Every Thursday in Rincón’s Town Square, they have The Art Walk. El Paseo de Los Artesanos is something you must experience.

From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, artisans and artists sell their artwork at the plaza.

image showing the art walk in Rincón

There is live music and fun in a safe environment. You can pick a few gifts for your loved ones back home. They also have good food freshly prepared there.

You can even get a relaxing massage.

The Art Walk is an excellent opportunity to see the festive spirit of Puerto Ricans.

19. Enjoy the view

Rincón’s landscape is unique.

There are mountains and hills very close to the shore.

image of El Faro de Rincon

From these hills, you will get a stunning view of the ocean. Try driving down road 115 to Domes beach, and you will love the scenery.

Many people go to Rincón Beach House Bar & Grill to enjoy the view from there.  On clear days, you will see Desecheo Island from any beach in Rincón.

Rincón’s nickname is El Pueblo de Los Bellos Atardeceres, the town of beautiful sunsets.

You will agree with the town’s nickname when you see the sunset at Rincón.

The combination of colors painting the sky will leave you speechless.

There are many places where you can see Rincón’s sunset.

My favorite place to see this natural wonder is Punta Higueras Lighthouse.

A sunset boat trip is one of the best ways to enjoy Rincón’s sunset.

21. Go extreme

Extreme water sports enthusiasts will have a great time in Rincón. Fly over one of Rincón’s beaches on a parasail.

image of a parasailing experience in Rincón

Rise above the ocean on a hydro flight (a personal watercraft pushes pressurized water up a hose and then splits into multiple jet nozzles that create a lift for the device and the rider).

Glide above the water on an eFoil (and an electric-powered surfboard that needs no waves).

Kite surf or speed up on a watercraft along the waters of Rincón.

Adrenaline seekers can choose from plenty of options.

22. Bioluminescence Tour

Rincón does not have a bioluminescent bay , but it is just a short drive from La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay in Lajas.

Rincón is only 28 miles from La Parguera Bio Bay.

image of 2 girls swimming in La Parguera Bioluminescence Bay

Puerto Rico has three different bio bays. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and can’t be missed.

You can learn more about Puerto Rico’s bio bays in our article Bioluminescent Bays Puerto Rico – All You Need To Know .

FAQ section

What to do in rincón, puerto rico when it rains.

When it rains, you can have a hot cup of coffee in one of Rincón's many coffee shops. The coffee aroma mixed with the petrichor (the earthy scent produced by rain) will make you feel warm and fuzzy.

What are some romantic things to do in Rincón?

Walk on Sandy Beach and pick up some sea glass as a reminder of your time in Rincón. Watch the sunset together, and you will see your significant other in a different light - pun intended.

Final thoughts

If you are planning to visit Puerto Rico, then you should definitely spend time in the town of Rincón .

My favorite things to do in Rincón are surfing and kayaking in the nearby bio bay .

Rincón has a prominent expat community; you will feel welcomed and have a great time in this peaceful, beautiful town.

What Our Clients Have to Say ★★★★★

Great Escape PR Logo

We went scuba diving with vinny and he was super kind and nice guy. I had best experience of my life and just wanted to stay under the water. We also saw dolphins.

Guide was awesome. He took the extra time needed to ensure everyone in our group got the attention they needed. Some in our group didn't have much dive experience and he went the extra mile to make sure they felt safe and comfortable.

Two hours was just right, and Vinny struck just the right balance of pro and laid-back. We were glad for the photo option, and Great Escape was careful with getting fin sizes and even a prescription mask!

Vinnie was amazing. We were running late and he waited for us. He took great pictures of the reef for us so we could just enjoy. He even found a turtle!

My bridesmaids booked the tour as a surprise part of my bachelorette trip and it was absolutely amazing! The guides were super professional at what they do but also were so much fun to have as part of the trip. Their relaxed but upbeat personalities really added to the party vibe on the boat. We definitely appreciated their patience’s with us needing to take the perfect group photo as it had been hard to get one with all of us in it that didn’t look completely like a selfie.

The warm waters surrounding Puerto Rico make it one of the best snorkeling destinations in the world. Snorkelers have endless places to visit , from coral reefs to mangrove forests and even shipwrecks.

  • Playa Flamenco —Consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the world , Playa Flamenco is located on the island of Culebra off Puerto Rico’s eastern shore. Accessible by plane from San Juan or ferry from Fajardo, this white-sand beach borders a quarter-mile of coral reefs and sea turtle nests.
  • Caja de Muertos —With a name like “Coffin Island,” you might not expect Caja de Muertos to be quite as gorgeous as it is. A small island off the southern coast, Caja de Muertos is home to possibly the bluest waters and biggest schools of fish you’ll ever see.
  • Pro tip: Catch a ferry from La Guancha Boardwalk in Ponce to get to Caja de Muertos. Beware: the ferry only makes one trip per day, so be sure to check arrival and departure times.
  • Cayo Santiago / Monkey Island —Just off Puerto Rico’s eastern coastline, Monkey Island gives you the chance to snorkel past macaque monkeys and colonial-era shipwrecks.
  • Pro tip: Waters can be choppy, so don’t go on breezy days.
  • Pata Prieta —On the southern edge of Vieques National Wildlife Refuge in Vieques, this small, remote beach is known for its empty sands and extremely calm waters. The only way to get to Pata Prieta is a rough dirt road, though, so it’s probably better a car for the day.
  • Pro tip: For advice on Vieques car rentals and other local essentials, ask a Puerto Rico travel expert .
  • Escambron Marine Park —A great option if you’re staying in San Juan , Escambron Marine Park is a quiet snorkeler’s paradise just outside of the bustling metro area. You can even see seahorses and turtles here!

Whether you’re a hiking powerhouse or just enjoy a good walk, Puerto Rico’s diverse landscapes boast prime strolling spots for everyone.

  • Pro tip: If you want to experience the most outrageous place to stay in Puerto Rico , spend the night in one of El Yunque’s treehouse lodges. Ask a trip planner how.
  • Bosque Estatal de Guanica— Pretty much the exact opposite of El Yunque as far as vegetation is concerned, the dramatic desert landscape of Bosque Estatal de Guanica is perfect for beachside hikes. Since this “dry forest” is only 40 minutes from Ponce, it makes for a great day excursion.
  • Cabo Rojo— Home to one of Puerto Rico’s most stunning views, Cabo Rojo is a cliffside paradise on the island’s southwestern edge. Wear comfy hiking shoes to trek the rocky cliffs to the top of Cabo Rojo Lighthouse . Since the lighthouse is closed on Wednesdays, you’ll want to plan accordingly.
  • Tanamá— Deep in Puerto Rico’s central mountains, Tanamá is packed with hiking adventures through caves and coffee fields. Though not many people visit this region, it’s by far one of the best places to go Puerto Rico .
  • Rio Camuy Cave Park— The world’s third-largest cave system, northwestern Rio Camuy is full of massive caverns to explore. An easy walk for all ages, Rio Camuy is still rebuilding from Hurricane Maria. For more information, check out this Puerto Rico tourism update .

Surfing in Aguadilla is one of the many activities in Puerto Rico

Did you know that Puerto Rico’s west coast is one of the world’s best surfing spots? With the island’s crystal-clear waves and uncrowded beaches, surfing is one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico for a reason.

  • Rincon —Great for beginner and intermediate surfers, the town of Rincon is the ideal surfing spot from November to March. Shred the waves at Sandy Beach, Little Malibu Beach, and Maria’s, where ocean temps get up to 82 degrees even in the winter.
  • Isabela —With its coral reefs and rocky outcrops, northwestern Isabela is a spot for more experienced surfers to test their skills. Check out Jobos Beach and Middles Beach, where waves can get past 7 feet high.
  • Aguadilla —Only 20 minutes from Isabela, the western town of Aguadilla is a well-kept local secret—not only for its off-the-beaten-path vibes but also for its all-level surfing swells. Head over to Surfers Beach or Wilderness for fewer tourists and more locals hanging ten.

To really get a taste of Puerto Rico, it’s essential to try a little (or a lot) of the diverse cuisine found on the island. From mom-and-pop food stands to posh, five-star restaurants, these are the must-go spots for your foodie tour of Puerto Rico .

  • Piñones Boardwalk —About a 30-minute drive from San Juan, the seaside town of Piñones is a local favorite for its fried street foods ( ) and cheap drinks. Pro tip: most stalls only take cash.
  • Miramar Food Truck Park —In the heart of Santurce and only 6 minutes from Old San Juan, the Miramar Food Truck Park is a local favorite.
  • La Ruta de Lechon (The Pork Highway) —Little-known but insanely delicious, this 3-mile stretch of highway outside the town of Guavate is lined with outdoor restaurants selling slow-roasted pork off the spit. Cheap drinks and music are also common, making it by far one of the best off-the-beaten-path attractions in Puerto Rico .
  • Ricomini Bakery —If you haven’t tried Puerto Rico’s famous sweet bread, you’re missing out. Head over to the Ricomini Bakery in southern Mayagüez to treat your sweet tooth.
  • Jose Enrique —One of San Juan’s up-and-coming restaurants, Jose Enrique is a deliciously bougie taste of Afro-Caribbean cuisine. Seriously, we’d travel to San Juan just for Jose Enrique’s mofongo .

Drinking pitorro (similar to moonshine) is one of the activities in Puerto Rico

If you don’t partake in caffeine (which confuses us greatly, but whatever) don’t worry—coffee’s only the tip of Puerto Rico’s culinary iceberg. Check out these places to grab (drinks) that will have your taste buds on overdrive.

  • Casa Bacardi —The best place to find Bacardi rum is obviously the distillery itself! That said, Casa Bacardi can be a bit touristy, so if you want something a little more off-the-beaten-path ask your local trip planner for other rum distillery options.
  • Hacienda Buena Vista —You haven’t really had coffee until you’ve had Puerto Rican-grown coffee in Puerto Rico. Tour this fully-functioning and restored coffee plantation/museum, then try the strangely scrumptious specialty cafe con queso (coffee with cheese).
  • Destilería Cruz —Have a few sips (or gulps) of , Puerto Rico’s moonshine rum, in Jayuya (central PR).
  • La Guancha —Okay, we cave; you can’t experience Puerto Rico without trying its national drink—the piña colada . Don’t miss La Guancha boardwalk in Ponce, where piña colada kiosks give free samples on hot nights.

Pro tip: you can get phenomenal piña coladas just about everywhere in Puerto Rico. It’s kind of one of the best reasons to travel there.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is one of the places to go for activities in Puerto Rico

When you’re in major cities like San Juan, San German, or Ponce, Puerto Rico’s main tourist attractions tend to be within walking distance of each other. Distances and neighborhoods can be a bit hit-and-miss, though, so expedite the process by having a local travel planner create customized walking maps for you.

  • Castillo San Felipe del Morro —San Juan’s iconic 16th-century fort overlooking the sea, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is free to the public—ideal for doing Puerto Rico on the cheap .
  • Plaza de Delicias —The central square in the city of Ponce, Plaza de Delicias (Plaza of Delights) is full of shady trees, fountains, and colonial charm, all next to Parque de Bombas , Puerto Rico’s first firehouse.
  • San German —San Juan’s more low-key twin, San German is home to quaint must-sees all within walking distance of each other.
  • Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum —Just outside of Vieques proper, this 200-year old fort-turned-museum is ideal for strolls around the cliffside ramparts.
  • Isla Verde—Just a 15-minute drive from San Juan, Isla Verde isn’t just one of Puerto Rico’s best vacation spots ; it’s also full of white-sand beaches for romantic walks.

Partying at Club Brava is one of the activities in Puerto Rico

Enjoying the island’s fabled nightlife is one of the most important things to do in Puerto Rico for any visitor. Don’t worry for a second about going out at night—contrary to popular belief, Puerto Rico is actually really safe , and you can take Uber anywhere.

  • Bar La Factoria —A Brooklyn- bar in Old San Juan known for its incredible cocktails and popping salsa weekends, Bar La Factoria is a great scene for local drinks and music.
  • Club Brava —A posh club in Isla Verde, San Juan, Club Brava is well-known among locals and visitors alike—just get there soon after it opens to avoid super long lines.
  • La Respuesta —An off-the-beaten-path spot in Santurce, San Juan, La Repuesta is where locals go on weekends for reggae and salsa, and on Mondays for hip-hop.
  • Club Salsa —Located in the town of Salinas (on the island’s southern coast), Club Salsa is a local favorite for Juan’s professional salsa classes.
  • El Boricua —A salsa joint in the heart of Rio Piedras (San Juan’s college district) El Boricua has live music every Tuesday, with the longest lines on Thursdays. As an added bonus, Rio Piedras is also one of the best places to stay in San Juan .

With so much incredible stuff to do in Puerto Rico , it makes sense to have a local travel planner (aka a Hero ) plan you a personalized, curated trip. They can create a custom guidebook and itinerary for you, make your reservations, even offer 24/7 phone support… basically everything but pack your bags. Any questions? Just send us a message . Why Go To Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is rich in charm and character with a dash of the familiar. Less than a three-hour flight from Miami , Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth (in case your high school history class didn't teach you that). So, when you're shopping in San Juan, the capital city (or anywhere else), you can pay for your souvenirs with American dollars. But don't be mistaken: This isn't quite a home away from home. Puerto Rico has both 20-foot waves for surfers and calm, clear waters for families. It's a stroll back through time ( El Morro ) and an up-close look at the contemporary ( Calle del Cristo ). It's an exhilarating mix of landscapes, from the serpentine jungle of El Yunque to brilliant beaches like Condado in metropolitan San Juan and the high-energy Crash Boat in Aguadilla on the west coast. And if you want to get further away from civilization, you can ferry over to the secluded – not to mention jaw-droppingly gorgeous – islands of Vieques and Culebra .

In 2017, Puerto Rico was pummeled by Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma, which combined claimed thousands of lives, destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings, and left much of the island without power for months. More than five years later, some basic infrastructure has been restored, but reconstruction efforts are ongoing. However, traveling to Puerto Rico is safe, and tourism will help the island in its recovery efforts. So, go ahead and book your flight; a world of natural enchantment, delicious food and historic experiences await.

Puerto Rico Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Puerto Rico is from mid-April to June, right after the busy winter season and just before the rainy summer (August is the month with the most rainfall). Spring weather is also very pleasant, barely escaping the mid-80s on most days. The island sees its best weather in winter – which is partly why this is the most crowded and expensive time to visit – but with careful planning you might uncover a pretty good discount during those months as well, particularly if you travel in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. You could also plan an enjoyable and affordable trip for the fall, when lodging can sometimes be found for under $200 per night. However, keep in mind that fall is also the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November.

What You Need to Know

It's open for tourism Puerto Rico is safe and ready for visitors. Tourism is a vital part of the island's economy and traveling there is a great way to help Puerto Rico recover from natural disasters.

It's got a great food scene From traditional foods like mofongo (plantains mashed with garlic and topped with meat, fish, vegetables, or other ingredients), arroz con gandules (rice and pigeon peas) and tostones (fried plantains) to staple drinks like rum and coffee, sampling the food of Puerto Rico is a must. Sign up for one of the best tours in Puerto Rico for help navigating the local food scene.

The "paradores" These inns scattered throughout the island's countryside are often an affordable alternative to staying in San Juan.

The sound is the coquí The coquí (pronounced ko-KEE) is a tiny tree frog. It's a symbol of the island and is indigenous to Puerto Rico. You'll hear the males singing nightly throughout the island.

How to Save Money in Puerto Rico

Take an Eastern Caribbean cruise Puerto Rico really should be explored over several days. But if you're short on time, you can get your fill during a shore excursion to San Juan.

Dine local Panaderías in Puerto Rico are far more than simple bakeries: they're also where locals gather for gossip, coffee, and inexpensive meals for breakfast or lunch. Food trucks and stands selling popular street food like alcapurrias (plantain and yucca mash stuffed with meat and deep fried), e mpanadillas , and bacalaitos (fish fritters) are another low-cost but delicious and authentic alternative to expensive restaurant meals.

Ride the Pú blicos If you want to travel like locals do, and at minimal cost, hail a ride from a público, which are transit vans that have specific routes and inexpensive fares (which you can only pay in cash). But, low fares come at a cost: Traveling via público can take a lot of time.

Culture & Customs

Much of Puerto Rican culture, from the food to the music, represents the island's combined North American, Caribbean, Spanish and indigenous Taíno heritage. In Old San Juan you can grab comida criolla (traditional Puerto Rican meals of pork, rice and beans) just a stone's throw from Calle del Cristo's Coach and Tommy Hilfiger factory outlets.

Speaking of clothes, you're on vacation in the tropics and you're going to want to dress informally. But it's a good idea to cover up your swimsuits with clothing unless you're at the pool or the beach. Also pay special attention to your attire before enjoying Puerto Rico's nightlife – only tourists go out dressing like they're at a barbecue. If you want to blend in at the bar, smart casual attire (slacks or dark jeans for men and dresses with heels or statement flats for women) is a must.

Many Puerto Ricans speak English, but Spanish is the language of daily life. Know some basic phrases such as "hola" (hello), "gracias" (thank you), "por favor" (please) and "de nada" (you're welcome). As you move farther outside San Juan, you'll likely meet fewer people who know English fluently. Pack a Spanish phrasebook, and know that Puerto Ricans welcome your efforts to converse with them in Spanish. In addition, you'll find that chatting with locals may mean carrying on several conversations at once or being interrupted. You may also find Puerto Ricans will stand closer to you when they meet you or reach for a handshake or hug when greeting you.

Since Puerto Rico is part of the United States, the island's currency is the U.S. dollar and credit cards are widely accepted. Tipping etiquette is the same here as in other parts of the United States; 15 to 20% is considered the standard, but more is appreciated for exceptional service.

What to Eat

Dining in Puerto Rico reflects the island's mixture of Caribbean, Latin, North American and indigenous Taíno influences. No matter where you dine, make sure you get a taste of some of Puerto Rico's most authentic eats:  asopao  is a traditional stew often made with chicken or beef;  mofongo  consists of seafood, meat or vegetables atop mashed plantains; pasteles are made of mashed banana (or yucca) and stuffed with pork, chicken or cod; and  lechón  is smoky, roasted suckling pig. Other items to try include tostones (fried plantains), arroz con gandules (rice and pigeon peas). For something sweet, try tembleque (a coconut custard), pastelitos de guayaba (a guava-filled pastry) or mantecaditos (a Puerto Rican shortbread cookie).

Drinks in Puerto Rico are a huge part of the island's dining culture, too. Coffee and rum are its two best-known beverages. Puerto Rico's climate makes it perfect for growing coffee, so you'll find lots of local growers and no shortage of places to enjoy a great cup. You can also visit one of the haciendas for tours of the coffee farms or to enjoy a warm drink.

You won't want to leave the island without trying local rum. Start with a piña colada, which was first created in Puerto Rico (specifically at the Caribe Hilton Hotel ) and is the island's national drink. If you'd rather do a tasting, pop by the Bacardí or Ron del Barrilito distilleries. Each distillery offers tours of its facilities, tastings and mixology classes. And if you visit around the holidays, be sure to sample coquito, a coconut-based drink akin to eggnog.

If you're staying in the northeast, you can expect a quieter dining experience along Luquillo or Fajardo beaches. The kiosks in Luquillo are a must-visit in the area, as you can sample a range of different cuisines. If you want to try some of the best eats in the area, Puerto Rico's tourism board has put together a list of food trails themed around island staples like pork, coffee and rum.

Puerto Rico sees some violent drug-related crime as well as thefts in San Juan and Ponce, but it's usually not directed toward tourists. Still, watch out for pickpockets, especially on the beach, and don't leave your property unattended or it might be swiped. Steer clear of certain areas in San Juan at night, such as La Perla and portions of Santurce, as these towns are prone to drug activity and violence.

Getting Around Puerto Rico

The best way to get around Puerto Rico is by car if you want to see more than the city in which you're staying, you'll need your own vehicle as intercity train service doesn't exist and intercity bus service is time-consuming and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, driving is a courageous pursuit carried out on snaking roads, and you'll need to carry spare change for the occasional toll.

In San Juan, you can likely get around without a car with careful planning. Parking can be expensive and traffic often is a nightmare in the city, so relying on the bus and your own feet are likely your best bet during your time in the capital. Uber is also available in the city.

You'll likely fly in to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), which is about 8 miles east of Old San Juan. You can pick up a rental car here or you can take a taxi to your destination. Taxis from the airport charge a fixed rate to different destinations around the island. The airport's website provides the fare list

Puerto Rico has smaller airports: Mercedita International Airport (PSE) on the southern coast (about 3.5 miles east of Ponce) and Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) on the west coast in Aguadilla. Check the flight schedule for airlines like Spirit, United and JetBlue that fly into either of those hubs.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You don't need a passport to enter Puerto Rico, as it's a United States territory. However, if you are traveling onward to another Caribbean destination (other than the  U.S. Virgin Islands ) from Puerto Rico, you will need to present your passport. Visit the U.S. State Department's  website  for more information on entry and exit requirements.

A Girls’ Trip to Costa Rica. But With No Phones, Did It Happen?

Travelers are signing up for phone-free tours, to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. But would it make for a better experience?

A group of young women sit on an oceanside patio, in front of a low-slung table, watching the sun set over the water far in the distance.

By Christine Chung

We were on a quintessential girl’s trip to Costa Rica. Together, we gulped icy drinks by the hotel pool, were battered by waves during a surf lesson, had our tarot cards read aboard a catamaran, and danced our hearts out, powered by espresso martinis, to early 2000s anthems on a rooftop.

But we didn’t capture any of this on our phones. No Instagram stories were posted of the fun being had. No TikToks either. We didn’t text photos to friends and family in far colder climates back home.

And if there wasn’t a picture, well, did it happen? I had wondered if a vacation without my phone would reprogram my iPhone-addled brain, whether it might deepen the connections I made or improve my travel experiences. So, in mid-April, I joined a group of 10 other women in their 20s and 30s for a four-day, phone-free tour of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, on the country’s northwestern coast, a picturesque place of breathtaking beaches, tropical forests and, everywhere around you, the chance of a surreal wildlife sighting.

To document my vacation, I brought only a pen, a notebook and a disposable camera.

‘More present in the moment’

FTLO Travel , which started offering group tours in 2016 for solo travelers 25 to 39 years old, organized our phone-free trip. Most FTLO clients are women, said Tara Cappel, the company’s founder and chief executive, and the majority of them are traveling solo for the first time.

The company has long had a rule prohibiting phones at dinner, she said, and the phone-free trips, which began this year, are an extension of this. “Removing that sort of temptation has always helped facilitate better bonding and conversation,” said Ms. Cappel, 35.

The hope in providing an entirely phone-free experience, she continued, is that travelers could “be present in the experience and the destination and with each other.”

She added that FTLO’s phone-free trips this year, which start at $1,699 and also head to Iceland, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, are in strong demand . My Costa Rica trip was sold out and overall, the company anticipates about 3,000 travelers across the hundreds of trips they’re offering this year.

The interest in these trips stem in part from a growing trend among travelers to try to escape technology’s tether on daily life. Operators are moving beyond offering meditation retreats and truly remote locations — even cruises and hotels in buzzy vacation hot spots these days market their disconnection experiences. At the Grand Velas Resorts , on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, guests can opt for a detox concierge, who will remove the hotel room’s flat screen television and lock all personal electronics in a safe. With Unplugged , a company specializing in tech-free escapes, you can book a “digital detox cabin” to spend three tech-free days in the English countryside.

Heather Orton, a nurse practitioner and my roommate in Costa Rica, said that going phone-free was the main reason she’d booked the FTLO trip. She’d previously gone on two trips with FTLO, to Crete and to Morocco, experiences where she made lasting friendships.

“At work I have to always have my phone on, be responsive to texts, emails and calls,” said Ms. Orton, 37, of Ohio. “It’s nice to turn that off and get away.” She said she felt she was “more present in the moment” and fully immersed in Costa Rica.

A bit like sleepaway camp

We’d come from all over the United States, including Texas, Alabama, California and Minnesota, and most of us were meeting for the very first time.

It felt like sleepaway camp, or college orientation — it was a social situation structured around group activities that quickly gave rise to new friendships, even if they were brittle ones. Two ebullient trip leaders corralled us to various activities and recited facts about local flora and fauna, all adding to the feeling of a camp for adults, and at times like being chaperoned on a school trip.

They directed us to their favorite restaurants and watering holes, and attempted to draw everyone into conversation and ensure no one felt left out. One afternoon, Mandy, one of the co-leaders and a certified yoga instructor, led a trio of us in a restorative flow at our hotel. Dani, the other trip leader, who was born in Costa Rica, was on crutches because of a recent ankle injury, but he hobbled along energetically on nights out, swaying to dance music on one leg.

Companies targeting younger travelers, like FTLO, G Adventures , Flashpack and others, aren’t touting their ability to get you to a place, but the connection they can deliver.

“The inspiration was really to help people go abroad who had the desire but didn’t necessarily have people to go with,” Ms. Cappel said of creating FTLO.

Sambavi Venkatesen, a 32-year-old therapist who lives in Austin, Texas, told me she had booked the trip after turning to TikTok to research group travel for people of color.

“The opportunity to meet other diverse women is not something that’s easily accessible in your 30s. That was kind of a big appeal,” she said, adding that she felt a real connection to other tour participants by trip's end. “I genuinely want to see people again and hope they visit me.”

Unscheduled time

We were based in Tamarindo, a lively tourist playground set along the Pacific Ocean that spanned just a few blocks, making it easy to navigate without GPS. We were given a printed map of the town, which I barely used. With my phone and laptop locked in the hotel room safe, gone were all the tools I usually rely on while traveling (and check frenetically): map and translation apps, social media and internet, for restaurant and activity searches. But thanks to the tour, this work had already been done.

We spent an afternoon ziplining through canyons and then crossed a rickety suspension bridge to plunge into the icy, refreshing waters by a waterfall. We surfed and drank beer — two activities I do not generally voluntarily sign up for. We lounged on the netted deck of a catamaran, where we watched a deep-red sun sink into the sea. Nearly every night we frequented a different nightclub.

We started the trip knowing nothing about each other’s lives, from our ages to interests. Our first night was characterized by icebreakers (“share a fun fact about yourself”) and the occasional awkward silence. But by the third night, we were screaming the lyrics to Lil Jon’s “Get Low” in the club. And the conversation grew more nuanced, as we shared stories about jobs, relationships, beloved pets and the rhythms of lives back home.

Some of the best moments happened during the time left unscheduled, when I made my own decisions about activities. A highlight of the trip was an excursion my roommate and I booked on our own, through the hotel, to kayak in a mangrove-bordered estuary, where we spotted iguanas, howler monkeys and a crocodile, watchful and still in the murky waters.

A fuzzy food photo

Overall, I didn’t miss my phone. The absence of Slack notifications and countless other digital intrusions was bliss. Conversations unspooled more fluidly than I expected they would without the crutch of a phone for idly filling silence. I slept deeper than I had in months. But my phone’s phantom presence loomed large. I swiveled my head, a Pavlovian response, when I heard the ping of another tourist's phone. My bag felt too light, which made me feel uneasy.

Mainly, I missed a good camera. Others had wisely brought digital cameras along, but I had to ration the pictures on my disposable camera, and only allowed myself to take one food photo. It’s fuzzy.

Not everyone on the trip was fully committed to the screen time ban. One night, as I tried to capture sunset using my disposable, one of my trip mates pulled out her phone and took a picture. I’m sure her photo is better than mine.

Toward the end of the trip, I learned that some other travelers had surreptitiously used their phones throughout (to text and call their moms, mostly).

But we delighted in seeing a drowsy tapir, a large mammal almost mythical because of its rarity, wake from an afternoon nap in Hacienda Guachipelin , a private property by Rincon de la Vieja National Park . There were also dozens of howler monkeys perched atop mangroves swaying in the wind, and one night, a man who was absolutely shredding on the guitar at a beachfront bar. All were incredible moments that I’ve already revisited in my memory.

On the last day of the trip, we switched our phones back on, literally jolting us back to real life with pings and vibrations. We shared Instagram handles to connect online, and I returned, almost without realizing it, to a stream of information, push notifications, digital itineraries, unfettered scrolling and the expectation of a quick reply to a message.

I’ve tried, however, to maintain the feeling of being phone-free in Tamarindo: the delicious lack of immediacy, the way time seemed to expand languidly.

Simply put, I’m using my phone less.
