Interview: Paul McKenzie of The Real McKenzies on the band’s new album, ‘Beer and Loathing’

  • June 20, 2020

Like most everyone else currently, Paul McKenzie is having a rough year. The Real McKenzies front man was four days into a world tour that would have seen the band travel through Canada and over to Europe, before heading to Australia, South America and then the US, when quarantine precautions were set in place. The band had played four dates from Vancouver to Montreal, but when they reached the club that evening and were told they’d be playing to an empty room. Since then, McKenzie been home waiting things out and with no end in sight it’s as if the new record, Beer and Loathing , was a not only a great title but an eerie premonition as well.

Currently holed up in Vancouver, Paul McKenzie says he is passing the time reading or re-reading classic novels.

“There isn’t much you can do right now. There’s no work, there’s no shows, there’s just nothing; except to wait.”

A rock and roller by trade, the vocalist was sad to be forcibly sent home in an incomparable moment in our timeline, but figured he could return to work and hope for a quick return to the road. There was a noticeable exhaustion and minor sadness to his tone of voice, but joked about having and apt supply of beans, whiskey and books to get through.

“When I got home not only was I no longer allowed to play music any longer, but my job was lost as well…and now I don’t know what I’ll do. I haven’t even heard from my girlfriend in months. She got quarantined, and I just hope she’s alright.”

When not on the road slaying audiences with their brand of Scottish infused punk rock, McKenzie is a high-rise window washer, or was; but trouble was brewing long before the pandemic. On the band’s most recent European tour, there was a mutiny. Paul says he was confronted by the then Real McKenzies bassist who said the band had collectively decided to call it quits and would be returning home immediately. Caught off guard and with no room for deliberation McKenzie says he did what he’s always done, and persevered. He retreated back to Berlin to regroup and get back to business as quick as possible. Within a week he literally had a new band of merry men and set forth to finish what he’d started that summer.

What Paul didn’t know yet was the then tour manager and newly ex-McKenzies bassist, upon returning home, had contacted all of the tours intended destinations and let them know the band wouldn’t be coming. Considering The Real Mckenzies have built themselves up on the proven fact they’re one of the hardest working bands around, many promoters knew something wasn’t right. Thankfully many had a mind to get in touch with Paul who upon getting a firm foundational footing, now had a new storm to waiver.

“I couldn’t believe it and honestly I still don’t feel like to really happened. Why would someone do this?”

Thankfully the band was still able to play many of their scheduled dates but lost out on some pretty big festival spots.

Paul goes onto explain, “You’d think that would have been the worst of it, but when I got home from the tour there was this weird feeling following me in my hometown and people I’d known a long time seemed to be not so friendly any longer.”

McKenzie says he was once even asked to leave a restaurant he’d long since supported since their opening, but he was no longer wanted or welcome by the chef; who was also his now ex-guitarist. McKenzie is hopeful that things will sort themselves out and that people will listen to the advisers so we can all get back to, creating some sort of new normal to get used to for a while.

On the new album, Beer and Loathing , the band continue to prove they are truly something special. The album has somber beginnings with, “Overton Bridge,” as if the band had just won a battle and were enjoying a moment of drink and song together in celebration. Then there are lyrical excepts worth noting all throughout the revved up, “Big Foot Steps.” The noticeably titled, “Cock up your Beaver,” is a cover of a song and poem by Robert Burns, written in 1972. The song is referring to a gentleman’s hat in an era when all high quality men’s hats were made of felted beaver fur. The Real McKenzies are a band that can either grip your heart or tickle your belly all while enriching you with Scottish culture and giving you a history lesson like they do in, “36 Barrels,” about Robert Catesby’s failed assassination attempt against King James I. There are ballads like, “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” and breakneck killers such as, “Narry Do Gooder,” this new album will sustain old fans and entice new ones.

It’s rare to get so much substance from one source but The Real McKenzies are that rare band. Led by a rare and fading breed of rock and roller, Paul Mckenzie has seen the world, been signed to Fat Wreck Records for a small spell, and he’s likely seen every band or artist you could ever fill a road trip playlist with. He puts as much of his heart into his songs as he does his incomparable sense of humor and we’re all lucky he keeps giving us more. If you’ve got a minute, you should write him an email to lift his spirits as I’m sure he’s running out of things to read. Scots Wha Ha’e!

The tour included visits to grazing systems, Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) irrigation pivots, bale grazing operations, and fields seeded with native grasses. Additionally, participants viewed tree and shrub plantings and renovations, an agricultural waste system, and engaged in a discussion with a producer about collaborations with the Forest Service, grazing associations, and oil companies.

“This tour was an excellent opportunity to see firsthand the innovative conservation efforts being implemented by producers in McKenzie County,” said NRCS State Conservationist Dan Hovland. “Their dedication to sustainable practices is truly commendable.”

One of the highlights of the tour was the “Soil Your Undies” challenge, an initiative designed to illustrate soil health. Last fall, undergarments were buried to observe decomposition rates as an indicator of soil activity. The group dug up the garments to assess the results and buried a new set for evaluation in the fall.

Soil Your Undies challenge. Jason Andrews, Watford City Field Office Natural Resources Specialist displays an undergarment from the “Soil Your Undies” challenge, an initiative designed to illustrate soil health.

“The ‘Soil Your Undies’ challenge is a fun and effective way to demonstrate the importance of healthy soil,” said Watford City Field Office District Conservationist Nicole Darrington. “It visually shows how active the soil biology is, which is crucial for our agricultural productivity.”

Throughout the day, NRCS leaders and local producers discussed the successes and challenges of various conservation practices. The event underscored the importance of collaboration and continuous innovation in sustainable agriculture.

“This tour reinforces our commitment to working together with producers to conserve natural resources and improve agricultural sustainability,” said Hovland. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with the McKenzie County Soil Conservation District and local producers.”

The tour concluded with a renewed commitment to sustainable practices and a shared vision for the future of conservation in McKenzie County.

Jennifer Lopez’s Canceled Tour, and Society’s Twisted Pleasure in Seeing Strong Women Fail

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

For a variety of reasons, one of the biggest stories in entertainment this year has been the precarious state of Jennifer Lopez ’s “This Is Me… Now” tour, which was finally put out of its misery yesterday.

Related Stories

Scarlett johansson vs. sam altman is the ‘black widow’ sequel we didn’t know we needed, dolly parton announces plans for broadway musical based on her life, 'hello, i'm dolly', popular on variety.

Just a few days earlier, another major act canceled their own overly ambitious North American tour that was scheduled to hit many of the same arenas that J-Lo’s was — the male rock duo the Black Keys. After that news broke, people asked what that said about the state of the touring business.

But when J. Lo canceled her tour just days later, people asked what it says about her.

As a society, why do we do that?

Broadly speaking, the reasons for both cancellations are the same: An artist past their commercial prime makes an overly optimistic projection about the response to their new project, gets it wrong, and pays the price — as do their partners in the enterprise, from promoters and venues down to dancers and truck drivers, because it takes a village to put on a tour of that size, and literally hundreds of people’s livelihoods are affected by those cancelations (which is something conveniently forgotten in the thinly veiled glee much of the public seems to take in such missteps).

Granted, the pop audience that J-Lo is targeting is very different from the more-loyal, less-fickle rock fans the Black Keys were aiming at. The pop world that J-Lo inhabits has the attention span of a smart fish and is infamously unforgiving of perceived transgressions, which can span from intentional factors — like a romantic partner who fans decide they don’t like — to unintended ones like, say, a multifaceted, self-absorbed autobiographical project by someone who famously is not the world’s kindest or most gracious superstar. For all her Bronx toughness and swagger, J-Lo has always been a pop artist and she knows that game and everything that comes with it.

But fame and power put people at a remove from reality, and it’s ultimately irrelevant whether everyone in her orbit also thought this project and tour were a great idea, or whether no one dared to say, “Hey, after the disastrous failure of ‘Gigli’” — the dreadful 2003 Affleck-Lopez film that not only destroyed the pair as a commercial property, but also helped tank the first era of their relationship — “maybe reviving Bennifer as a commercial enterprise isn’t a great idea?” The end result was the same: a canceled tour and a stiff album. Artists make similar miscalculations every year.

Yet the online venom and hateration that has surrounded the failure of this enterprise has been epic in scale. The term schadenfreude — a combination of the German nouns Schaden, meaning “damage” or “harm,” and Freude, meaning “joy,” per Merriam-Webster — means taking pleasure, often illogical pleasure, in others’ misfortune. And while men certainly can be victims of it — does anyone remember Martin Shkreli and his unusually punchable face ? — society certainly seems to reserve the worst of its venom for powerful, successful, talented women.

It’s a matter of public record that women’s rights are under ferocious attack, from Iran, Afghanistan and Russia to the United States and our arguably corrupt Supreme Court, multiple state governments and even Benedictine College’s commencement . But the hate isn’t coming exclusively from men. At a certain point, we decide we don’t like a public figure anymore without really knowing — or at least without consciously thinking about — why.

Except subconsciously, it’s probably not that deep. Sometimes we just don’t like or get tired of someone’s face (cf. Shkreli, who never had a chance), sometimes we resent their success, sometimes we also resent their happiness, or at least their seeming flaunting of it. In the wider public eye, J-Lo seems to have run afoul of the latter two, and the rumors that she and Affleck may be separating after less than two years of marriage seem an almost inevitable final act before a (probably equally inevitable) redemption chapter, after everyone finally realizes how unfair they were (cf. Britney Spears).

This is a road that Beyonce also went down at the peak of her career. She (apparently) shared the challenges that her own marriage was facing — and intensified her already-deep connection with her audience — in the lyrics of her galvanizing “Lemonade” album and tour… but then made a sort of happy-ending follow-up with her 2018 duet album with husband Jay-Z, “Everything Is Love,” which landed well initially but in retrospect is self-indulgent, treacly and awkwardly self-congratulatory: It’s just hard to have much empathy for two near-billionaires singing about how difficult it was coming through the fire. Their ruling status — and the fact that people are genuinely afraid of their fanbases — enabled them to dodge the storm that usually follows such hubris.

J-Lo, as we’re seeing, hasn’t dodged those bullets. At 54, she’s at a tricky point in a pop star career: Hit singles for artists at that age are as rare as Bigfoot sightings — Cher’s “Believe” and Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” the two main examples that come to mind, were released more than a quarter-century apart — and only generationally defining stars with enormous catalogs of hits, like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel can tour arenas into retirement age. What’s missing from that category? Women. Most of the top-grossing female touring artists — Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pink — are under 45. The only one who isn’t, Madonna, at 65 played to some middling audiences on her just-completed, mostly triumphant “Celebration” tour, as well as an estimated 1.6 million people at the final concert in Brazil. She’s weathered all of the above storms — and then some — and come out on top, but it’s taken hurricane-force, once-in-a-generation level of determination (and probably has taken quite a personal toll as well).

Variety pursued the reports of J. Lo’s poor ticket sales — and those of the Black Keys and others —aggressively, not for reasons of schadenfreude but because such stories are important in our corner of the media world, and it’s a sad fact of our business that bad news gets a lot more clicks than good news. Her fans swarmed on us, which comes with the turf, but the stories were hugely successful. As it does every time schadenfreude piles up on a female public figure, I was reminded of something: During the heyday of Lena Dunham’s TV series “Girls,” there was a video meme — or whatever passed for a meme in 2012 — of young women making comical, snarky opinions about show, with one of them saying, “I’ve never seen it… but I think I don’t like it.”

It was a joke, but still, that statement seems like a sadly perfect distillation of the amount of thought, let alone logic, that goes into the kind of hateration that J. Lo and so many other female public figures are receiving right now. It’s also not hard to imagine that syndrome playing a major role in many other successful women being brought down a peg after a majority of people decide they just don’t like her, not least the defeat of Hillary Clinton by her unapologetically misogynist opponent in 2016.

J. Lo is a great artist and she will be fine, and she’s clearly tough enough to weather all of this. But why should she have to? There’s obviously more going on here than just a canceled tour, and it does make one wonder whether the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude and our role in furthering it is a problem that goes beyond a few “harmless” clicks.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Summer Tour

The singer and actress said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision, which comes on the heels of a hit Netflix movie and persistent rumors about her marriage.

Jennifer Lopez announced on Friday that she has canceled her “This Is Me … Live” summer tour. In a message on her website she said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision.

“Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary,” she continued, promising her fans that they’d be “together again.”

An accompanying statement from Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, said that “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” and that tickets bought through Ticketmaster would be refunded automatically.

The tour, scheduled for arenas across the country, appeared to be struggling with ticket sales; earlier this year, a handful of dates had been canceled and several shows appeared to have a number of unsold seats, Variety reported in March.

The cancellation comes during a time when Lopez, 54, has been in the spotlight for both her work and her personal life. She currently stars in the sci-fi action thriller “Atlas,” which has been the No. 1 film on Netflix in the United States since its debut last week.

And in February, she released an expansive, ambitious project, which she had poured $20 million of her own money into. It included a studio album, “ This Is Me … Now ”; an accompanying musical film, “ This Is Me … Now: A Love Story ”; and a making-of documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which stars her husband, the actor and director Ben Affleck, 51. The pair also appeared together in an ad for Dunkin’ Donuts that debuted during this year’s Super Bowl.

Despite the recent collaborations, rumors have been swirling for weeks that their marriage is in trouble , with tabloids offering reports almost daily on the state of their union. Lopez and Affleck were famously minted as “Bennifer” when they dated from about 2002 to 2004, a period that included a brief engagement. They reunited in 2021 and married in July 2022.

A representative for Lopez did not immediately respond on Friday to questions about the tour cancellation or the reports about her marriage to Affleck.

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

real mc kenzies tour

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

USA TODAY has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Bennifer timeline: Their love story spans two decades, two engagements

Separate outings have fueled speculation about marriage with Ben Affleck

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

Tour refunds for JLo tickets

Tickets will automatically be refunded, according to the newsletter.

Fans who purchased from third-party sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub and VividSeats should reach out to those websites for refunds.
