Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October, although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months.

5 Days Lore Lindu Birding Tour

Lore lindu birding package tour.

Lore Lindu Birding Tour is a great choice of trip for Birding Enthusiast to explore Lore Lindu National Park, the greatest National Park in Sulawesi Island. Lore Lindu is home to 77 bird species endemic to Sulawesi. The National park is designated as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. In addition to its rich wildlife, the park also offering Lore Lindu Megalith Tour. The megaliths dating from before 1300 AD.

A 5 days and 4 nights stay for our Lore Lindu Birding Tours will offer lots of sites for Bird Watching. We shall base ourselves in the lowlands making frequent forays to the higher reaches of the park for some of the really special endemics of Sulawesi . It is difficult to know where to start to describe the incredible diversity of species that inhabit the national park, which is home to nearly all of Sulawesi ’s remarkable endemics.

The higher reaches of the park, accessible along an old logging road, are home to 4 of the most wanted endemics; Diabolical (Satanic) Nightjar, Geomalia, Great Shortwing and one of the world’s most spectacular Bee-eaters; Purple-throated Bee-eater, which breeds in roadside banks and often perches conspicuously, giving great views.

Once again, Pigeons are much in evidence, White-bellied and Grey-headed Imperial are regularly seen, as are Superb and Red-eared Fruit Doves. Feeding flocks often comprise several endemics; Yellow-vented and Sulphur-bellied Whistlers, Cerulean and Pygmy Cuckoo-shrikes, Rusty-bellied Fantail, Sulawesi Myzomela and both Lesser and Greater Sulawesi Honeyeater. Birding at a slightly lower altitude will produce a shift in avifauna.

Here we can find the taxonomically perplexing Malia, flocks of which sometimes contain the rare Sulawesi Thrush, an equally perplexing species that behaves more like a babbler than a thrush! The forest understory is home to the rarely seen Maroon-backed Whistler, Sulawesi Ground Dove and even such mega-rarities as Blue-faced Rail and Sulawesi Woodcock are present, albeit seen by only the most fortunate birders. Lore Lindu National Park

Travellers invariably describe Lore Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi as a highlight of their trip, and that’s not surprising given the natural and ancient archaeological treasures contained within its borders. This massive 2,180km 2 park sprawls across a densely forested mountain range, bounded by the Palolo, Napu, Bada and Kulawi valleys.

Photo © Wakx

The park forms part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, a testament to the amazingly diverse flora and fauna found among the tropical lowland, montane and sub-alpine habitats. Almost every mammal and bird species found on Sulawesi is represented in the park, including rare and endemic species such as the Tonkean macaque, the North Sulawesi babirusa, an odd creature that looks like a cross between a boar and a hippopotamus, the Mountain anoa, a dwarf buffalo, the super cute Pygmy tarsier and several species of cuscus.

Encountering the endemic gold snake may not be on everyone’s wish list but bird lovers will be thrilled to get a glimpse of the Maleo fowl, a bird that incubates a single egg in the warm sand near geothermal springs, or the Giant allo, the male of whom uses mud to barricade his nesting partner inside a hollow tree trunk, slipping her food through a tiny narrow opening until their chicks are hatched.

Weird and wonderful wildlife are not the only intriguing thing about Lore Lindu. Around 400 ancient stone megaliths are scattered in the rivers and rice fields of the Napu, Besoa and Bada valleys. Ranging in size from 10cm to 4.5m, the granite megaliths are a mix of minimalist carved human or animal forms called arca menhirs and large urns called kalambas . Archaeologists have dated the megaliths from between 3000 BC to 1300 AD but so far little else is known about the artifacts or the mysterious civilisation that created them.

Local villagers offer scant information. They say the human arca menhirs were criminals who were turned to stone as punishment for their misdeeds. They point to deep grooves on the some of the carvings as evidence of knife wounds. The kalambas , according to them, were bathing vessels for kings and gods. Citing the heavy granite lids found nearby, archaeologists theorise that they were in fact stone coffins, sarcophagus’s not unlike those found on Sumbawa Island . A few stone tablets, perhaps once used as grinding stones, and low tables or altars have been also been unearthed, but intriguingly no tools or accouterments of day to day life.

With such a vast range of wildlife, stunning landscapes and ancient mysteries, it’s little wonder Lore Lindu is gaining traction as one of Sulawesi’s “must see” attractions. The hard part will be deciding what to see in the time you have.

Access to the park is relatively easy. Two main roads run adjacent to the eastern and western boundaries of the park, linking around 60 quiet rural villages, and converging at Palu city on the mid-north west coast. A series of dirt roads networking off these main routes provide 4-wheel drive and scooter access deeper into the park so whilst trekking in Lore Lindu is first rate if you can spare 3-4 days or more, it’s possible to get a taste of the park in a single, long day trip from Palu.

Most visitors travel out from Palu, entering Lore Lindu via the village of Kamarora (50km, 2.5hrs drive) where the park headquarters and information centre are located. Kamarora has several basic hotels and homestay accommodation and is a convenient base to explore the northern section of the park, in particular the tranquil highland lake of Danau Lindu ( Lake Lindu ). The best way to see it is to hire a traditional canoe from one of the local fishermen and spend a few hours on the water, followed by a visit to one of the three small lakeside villages. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to spot a variety of water birds and the elusive Maleo fowl. Hornbills and a raft of other birds and a couple of small waterfalls can be found in the forested hills not far from Kamarora but you’ll need to engage a guide to help you find them. If prefer to immerse yourself in warmer water, head over to the natural hot springs in the neighboring village of Kadidia .

Tracking down the eastern side of the park another 50km and 2.5hr driver further south brings you to Wuasa village, the largest settlement in Lore Lindu. The village has several guesthouses and homestays offering decent meals and accommodation. Electricity is limited to 5-10:30pm so take a torch. Due to its proximity to the small but sublime Lake Tambling , and an old logging trail called the Anaso Track which snakes through dense jungle to Mt Rorekatimbu , Wuasa is regarded as the best place for bird-watching but you could well spot some black macaques in the trees there also. Guides, scooters or 4-wheel drive jeeps can be readily arranged in the village.

Continuing south, you’ll find the megaliths are scattered through the Napu , Besoa and Bada Valleys . The bulk of them, and the most interesting ones are located right at the southern end of the park in the Bada Valley, a gorgeous river valley of sweeping rice fields, bubbling streams and gentle rolling hills. The giant “Palindo” megalith is located on the Sepe Plateau and is not to be missed.

Trekking around the valley from site to site is superb but most are accessible by scooter or four wheel drive and are signposted so you can easily find your own way around. Guides, transport and accommodation are readily available in Bariri or Doda villages in the Besoa valley or Gintu village in the Bada valley. As with the rest of the park, expect to pay between 100,000-150,000Rp per night and around 100,000Rp per day for scooter hire.

For trekking anywhere off the main forest tracks, you’ll need to engage a local guide who is familiar with the area. There are several designated campsites located around the park such as at Lake Tambling but you can camp wild on longer treks. The park rangers will be able to help organise guides and provide more details on trekking and campsite options. Bring your camping gear with you as there’s no gear hire available from any of the villages. Be aware that despite being situated on the equator, the Lore Lindu highlands can be downright freezing overnight so be sure to pack warm clothing and bedding.

A park entrance fee of 150.000Rp for foreigners or 5.000Rp for Indonesians applies. Permits can be obtained from the National Park Head office in Palu (Tel: +62 0451 423 608) ahead of time or on arrival at the park from one of the handful of satellite offices and ranger posts located at the most popular entry points for the park.

Organised single or multi-day tours from Palu are available and can easily be booked on arrival in Palu. Generally, the tour operator will organise transport, food, accommodation and entry permits but be sure to check as the inclusions differ from operator to operator.

The Port town of Poso located to the east of Lore Lindu is an alternative gateway to the park through Wuasa or Gintu village via Lake Poso. A convenient route for those travelling on from central Sulawesi is Palu – Wuasa – Napu – Besoa – Bada – Poso or vice versa.

The main gateways to Lore Lindu is Tentena from the east and Palu from the north. From Tentena a public jeep leaves daily with a charge of Rp 100,000 per person. Another option is to charter a private jeep which is approximately 1-1,500,000.

Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Last Updated on February 22, 2023

Located deep into a lush jungle in central Sulawesi, Lore Lindu National Park is a must-see if you’re in Indonesia. It is well known for its impressive scenery, diverse wildlife, and most of all, for its 700 years old megaliths, some of which are dated as far as 3000 BC. This UNESCO biosphere reserve sees few tourists and is definitively an off-the-beaten-track adventure.

Travel tips  – Before any international trip, make sure to   get travel insurance  and check  visa requirements.

Megalith, Bomba, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Tentena

About 400 granite megaliths, giant freestanding statues, are scattered in and around Lore Lindu National Park, they’re mostly located in Bada, Besoa, and Napu valleys. They used to be considered as Gods or spirits by the locals, each having a particular role, they would gather around the statues, pray and hold ceremonies there. Some resemble humans and other animals.

Megalith, Bomba, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Tentena

These megaliths are said to be very mysterious because there isn’t a lot of information about them. The locals have a lot of legends to tell and are highly superstitious. Some think the statues can move and others that they are humans turned into stone. The weirdest part is that the type of rock used to build the megaliths is found nowhere near the area. Researchers are not sure of when they were built and neither by whom nor why.

You’ll need a guide to find the megaliths, there are no indications of where they are, and they are pretty far from each other. The area is really nice, with a lot of nature, there are only small villages around. The megaliths are usually in the middle of the fields, you’ll probably have to go through wet rice fields, bring a change of shoes. You can arrange a day trip from Tentena or Palu, or decide to stay in one of the homestays for a local experience.

Megalith, Bomba, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Tentena

You can also organize a hiking trip in the rainforest. Try to avoid going after rainfalls as it can get pretty muddy.

As for wildlife, expect to see animals such as Tarsiers, the smallest monkey in the world, a shy and super cute animal; babirusas, a type of boar; bears cuscus, a marsupial… Birdwatchers will also be pleased with many bird species, such as the impressive hornbill and the rare geomalia. Lore Lindu National Park is home to 77 bird and ten mammal species endemic to Sulawesi. You’ll also see a rich flora with many exotic plants and flowers.

Lore Lindu is not your typical national park, it’s more of a protected area. You won’t find an entrance with the headquarter and a map of the trails, you’ll need to hire a local guide or go through a travel agency .

Tarsier

The best places to observe birds are near Danau Tambing, Danau Lindu, Wuasa village, and on the Anaso track.

You can start at the park tourist office to check out what they offer. If you want to go trekking for more than a short walk, you’ll need to hire a guide, it’s compulsory. Day hikes and 2 to 3 days hikes are available, you can choose to focus more on wildlife or megaliths.

You can hire a guide at the park’s tourist office for about 400k a day, make sure he speaks English. You’ll also need to buy the park’s permit for 150k. If you just go see the megaliths, you won’t have to pass by the park office, and you won’t have to pay.

Hornbill

How to get there:

From Tentena there is a daily bus to Bomba, then you’ll have to take an ojek.

From Palu, there are daily buses to Wuasa and Doda, departing from Petobu terminal.

You can also rent a motorbike, and come on your own, you’ll need one anyway to explore the area if you don’t hire a guide with his own transportation.

If you’re planning to take a day trip, you better arrange it with a guide from Palu or Tentena. I recommend Alfian, who speaks perfect English and can take you on his motorbike. Here is his Facebook .

Where to stay near Lore Lindu National Park:

You can find many homestays in the villages around the park. Wuasu being the largest one, its central location makes it the better option.

Napu valley, Bomba, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Tentena

Useful information about visiting Lore Lindu National Park

  • The best time to visit is during the driest months, from July to September.
  • There are around 400 megaliths spread around the area.
  • The park is located at around 6,600 ft above seawater (be careful if you suffer from altitude sickness)
  • In the highland areas, the temperature can drop as low as 44° F

What you’ll need to bring to visit Lore Lindu National Park

  • Comfortable shoes that dry fast, maybe consider packing a pair of wet shoes if you have to walk through mud or paddy fields.
  • Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
  • A hat or cap.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • A power bank as there’s no electricity during the day in most villages.
  • A pair of binoculars if you go bird watching.
  • Plenty of water and snacks.

In Sulawesi? Check out Danau Tempe , a huge lake home to many nomads for a couple of months each year.

2-day itinerary in Lore Lindu National Park

Considering the park is not that easy to reach, I would advise spending at least a night in one of the villages. This way, in addition to visiting the area, you’ll also get a cultural experience and get to discover the local way of life. You won’t find hotels, only basic homestays with villagers. The rate usually includes two meals and accommodation. It’s a great opportunity to discover their communal lifestyle.

On the first day, you can go around the see the main megaliths, and on the second day, you can arrange for a trek to see some wildlife, especially birds.
