These are some awesome recipes. We always end up making French Toast as you have on the list but we are definitely going to need to branch out and try some new recipes.

That French Toast is just so good!

The recipes look great! We’re usually out for an 8-10 day canoe trip and don’t carry cast iron or cans/bottles. Our challenge is 2 vegetarians and a lactose/gluten intolerant individual. With some modifications, these look doable. We’ll give them a try and report back.

  • Fried or Scrambled Egg – one for each sandwich (optional – we skip for a quick mess free option)
  • Tomato slices (optional)

Fry or scramble the eggs first. Lay a piece of tinfoil down on the table, large enough to wrap up the sandwich completely.

Place 1 slice of cheese, meat & tomato on one side of sandwich, close it up & wrap in tinfoil. Cook about 10-15 minutes over coals to melt the cheese & heat everything up. Rotate and flip the tinfoil package to prevent burning.

5. Camping Oatmeal Recipe with Dried Fruit

If your morning schedule is jam-packed with activities, you’d better arm yourself with a hearty and nourishing breakfast. You can always rely on oatmeal for that.

Aside from the nutritional boost, oatmeal is an ideal camping breakfast because it’s portable and non-perishable. It’s super quick and easy to cook, as well!

With just a bit of sugar and dried fruit, you can transform the boring dish into a sensational meal.

6. Cast-Iron Skillet Campfire Frittata

Is there a more colorful way to start the day than with scrambled eggs and cheese filled with tomatoes, basil, and shallots? I don’t think so!

This campfire frittata is an insanely easy breakfast that you can enjoy in no time.

You can cook it using a cast-iron skillet or a Dutch oven. Either way, it will turn out amazing.

7. Campfire Breakfast Burrito

Bring the fun of Taco Tuesdays at the campsite by making burritos for breakfast!

These tortilla wraps are fully loaded with hash browns, ham, eggs, cheese, and chiles.

The flavors and textures are perfect together. And if these don’t fill you right up, I don’t know what will.

To make camp life easier, prepare the burritos in advance and wrap them in tin foil. Just warm them up over hot coals, and breakfast is ready.

8. Banana Bread Pancakes

Can’t decide between pancakes and banana bread for breakfast? Who says you need to choose?

This recipe combines the two beloved dishes to make one phenomenal breakfast.

All you’ll need is to add banana slices, walnuts, and brown sugar into your ordinary pancake batter and the transformation is complete.

Not only are they a snap to make, but they will also have the whole campsite smelling like heaven!

9. Fruit Cups

If you’re looking for something light and delightful for breakfast, you can’t go wrong with fresh fruits.

I’m talking peaches, baby oranges, apples, and whatever in-season fruits you have on hand.

I know what you’re thinking – how do you keep peeled fruits from browning? It’s easy, all you’ll need is to soak them in lemonade!

Not only will it make your fruits stay fresh longer, but it will even enhance their flavor.

10. Campfire Hash with Potatoes and Sausage

Potatoes plus sausage equal satisfaction. The starchiness and fluffiness of the tots pair wonderfully with the smokiness of the meat!

Together, they create such a hearty and savory dish. They’re a match made in heaven!

If there is any way to make meals easier while camping, it’s worth a shot, right?

Prep, prep, prep! Whatever can be mixed or chopped before you leave the ease of your home kitchen, take the time and do it. Future you will thank you.

I am a huge believer in ‘lazy mom camping’ and if you want more tips and ideas around making your entire trip easier, check out this article all about planning and prepping your stress-free family camping trip .

1. Pre-cook the Bacon

Frying bacon ahead of time is a game-changer! Get that whole package done and all you’ll have to do is heat it a bit at the campsite and it’s done! I recommend saving all the bacon grease in a glass jar and bringing it along on your camping trip. You’ll want a little in the frying pan to reheat the bacon and it is awesome for making scrambled eggs.

I think these days you can also buy pre-cooked bacon in the freezer section. My grandma likes this, but I haven’t tried it yet.

2. Scramble your eggs

While cooking the eggs might not take a long time, cracking eggs does! Find containers that will hold as many eggs as you need each morning and go ahead and whisk those bad boys. Store the egg mixture in the cooler for up to a couple of days.

Or, if you have any food safety concerns about scrambling the eggs ahead of time, you can purchase cartons of egg whites and these are perfect for scrambled eggs and easy to use… or powdered eggs is an option too!

3. Pancake Batter Shortcuts

I recommend using “just add water” pancake mix while you’re camping. If you have a water bottle that has measurements on the side, add the water in, measure out the dry ingredients, give it a shake, and your pancake mixture is ready!

If you want to fancy up your pancakes, bring along some berries to add in, mash up a banana or two into the batter, or add some cinnamon and raisins (or chocolate chips!) to the dry mix before leaving home.

4. Hot Beverages: Skip the fancy, try instant

Just because you’re camping doesn’t mean you have to slack on morning drink options! If you have a camp stove, you can heat water for anything from coffee to tea to hot chocolate.

Want to simplify your morning? Go instant! Spend some time browsing the coffee aisle. There are so many gourmet varieties of instant coffee these days. So much easier than cleaning a coffee machine at the campground.

Another easy tip: If you have access to electricity, bring along an electric tea kettle and an extension cord! Coffee can be made in a percolator, French press, or if you brought the extension cord, why not just bring a coffee maker? The space different items take up is all about priorities.

READ MORE: Read more about camping kettles here.

5. Powdered Milk?

If your kids like milk (but maybe don’t like powdered milk), there are a few shelf-safe milk options that don’t need to be chilled until you’re planning to drink it. Bring along the individual containers and throw what you’ll need for the next day into the cooler the night before. They will be nice and cold when you need them, but won’t take up tons of space in your cooler!

Powdered milk is an option for cereal and if your family likes alternative milks like soy and almond, you should be able to find non-refrigerated options of these as well.

6. Plan and Prep before the trip!

Yes, it takes a bit of extra time, but do it!

Make a meal plan, even if it’s a general outline… then, prepare everything you can ahead of time.

Cut up the pepper you plan to add to your scrambled eggs. Wash the berries. Mix up your overnight oats into individual jars before the trip. Anything that can be done at home means one less thing you need to do when you’re out enjoying the quite, relaxing wilderness.

I love make-ahead meals! And camping make-ahead meals are no exception. Breads and muffins are a perfect and easy camping breakfast option! Simply make a batch of muffins ahead of time and freeze them to keep other foods cold in the cooler for a day or two while they thaw.

Go ahead and make a batch of your family’s favourite muffin recipe or try something new!

Muffins: So many to choose from! Our favourites are banana chocolate chip, blueberry with brown sugar on top and morning glory muffins – full of all sorts of great things!

Cinnamon raisin bread: toasted with butter, so good!

Fruit Loaves: Zucchini, banana, cranberry, pumpkin, etc.

Toast: So simple! Peanut butter, jam, honey, easy!

Vegan Blueberry Lemon Muffins – Two fruit flavors that are a wonderful mix have to be blueberry and lemon! Try making and freezing these muffins for a fast and tasty camping breakfast.

If you’d prefer to make your bread right over the campfire, give this one a try!

Damper – A traditional Australian bread that is easy to make at the campsite, try a Damper and learn some history while you’re at it!

Hearty Breakfast Ideas

Feeling a little more ambitious? These hearty hot breakfasts may take a smidge more time if you’re making them on-site, but they will be well worth your time and effort.

Basic Bacon and Eggs: A traditional hearty breakfast without much work (if you pre-cook the bacon at home!)

Campfire Frittata: Grab your cast iron skillet, some eggs, cubed ham, chopped onion and bell peppers, spinach, and your favourite cheese. Drizzle some olive oil to sauté the onion and peppers first, then mix everything together and cook over the open flame.

Breakfast Burger, Burrito, or Sandwich: Whatever you call it, the basic recipe is the same – Bread, buns, or flour tortillas with scrambled or fried egg, bacon, sausage, or ham, and cheese inside.  Always yummy!

Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Skillet – An all-in-one pan delight that will fill hungry bellies for hours!

ham and eggs in muffin tins cooking over a campfire

Campfire Egg Cups with Ham – An easy recipe to customize and so simple to make (even the kids can help!). Use an aluminum muffin tin to cook these over an open fire.  Oh, and they’re great for supper too!

Broccoli Egg Bites – Tasty whether eaten hot or cold, broccoli egg bites are a make-ahead, savory snack that will give you a boost of nutrients, too!

Make-Ahead Scrambled Egg Muffins – Another make-ahead breakfast idea, these egg muffins are easily customized to your taste. You can even make different flavors all at once to add lots of variety!

Healthy Vegetarian Greek Breakfast Egg Muffins – Here’s a scrumptious Greek version of egg muffins that is sure to add some flavor to your morning.

Bacon or Sausage, Eggs, and Toast – A simple made on-site breakfast, even this one can be simplified. As I mentioned before, you can crack your eggs and put them in a water bottle for easy scrambling, the bacon and sausage can be cookied ahead and reheated in a skillet (save that grease!), and toast can be made on the camp stove or over the campfire.

Backpacking Breakfast – Cheesy Bacon Grits. Yummy. An excellent choice for on-the-go hikers and campers!

Tailgate Breakfast Tacos – Easily adapted for the campsite, slice your peppers and crack your eggs before you leave home and this breakfast will come together quickly.

Skillet Breakfast – I recommend some prep with this one to cut down on the time, but with a nice, hot fire, this one-pot breakfast will come together quickly. Eggs, peppers, potatoes, and bacon are such a tasty combination!

Huevos Rancheros with Chorizo – A colorful and protein-packed breakfast that will be a perfect taste excursion from your everyday breakfast items!

Mountain Man Breakfast – A filling option consisting of eggs, ground sausage, potatoes (regular, sweet, or hash browns all work), and cheese, a Mountain Man Breakfast will fill you up, but will take some time to cook, so be prepared.

camping breakfast in a paper bag over the coals

Breakfast in a Bag – A fun idea that doesn’t use any dishes (bonus!). Breakfast in a Bag is delicious and a simple bacon, eggs, and cheese meal that cooks over hot coals in a paper bag!

Campfire Breakfast Burritos – Breakfast Burritos can be made ahead completely, wrapped up in foil, and reheated over a campfire. You can also scramble the eggs ahead of time and toss them in a plastic bag for the cooler to use as-needed.

Camp Kitchen Considerations and FAQs

If you’re in an RV, you don’t have to worry about a stove and refrigeration (probably). For those of us who love (or are willing to endure) a hardier form of camping, let’s think through the kitchen situation.

No Refrigeration?

My first suggestion is to be sure to invest in an excellent cooler. Read those reviews and find one that stays cool for a long time. Also, I recommend finding one that has a spigot on the bottom so you can easily drain the water that accumulates from melting ice (and for easier cleaning). Check that cooler often and make sure everything is staying nice and cold! If you want to be extremely precise, invest in a thermometer so you can monitor those temps.

The second recommendation is to find alternatives to having to use a cooler. Especially for items that would be a huge issue if they spoiled or would take up a lot of space in a cooler.

I’m talking powdered items that come to life with a little water, for example, Powdered Milk – If mixed correctly, your kids can’t tell that you’re using powdered milk instead of fresh milk in the cereal. Just be aware, once reconstituted, the milk has to be refrigerated. So be sure to make just what you need or you’ll be cooling it anyway. But you can definitely store it in smaller glass containers and it will take up less space in the cooler, so it is still a great alternative!

How will you cook breakfast?

The next challenge is the cooking. It’s likely that you are cooking over an open fire, on a camp stove, or on a single butane burner (because, remember, if you have the luxury of all amenities in an RV, you’re skipping this section).

A campfire will allow everyone to cook their own food as they like it. Pop some toast in a toaster basket and throw it over the flame for a few minutes and it’s done. Easy peasy. There are also lots of foil-wrapped meals that can be cooked in the hot coals.

The downside to a campfire is that the heat can be inconsistent and if your wood is wet, you are out of luck. Keeping a fire going can be a challenge, so make sure you’re up for it! And, in the morning, some campers don’t enjoy waiting the time needed to get the fire going properly for cooking.

a frypan and kettle on a propane camping stove

A camp stove is a great way to have more consistent cooking capabilities. With two burners, you can heat more than one thing at once, which will make a meal take shape much quicker. It also has a natural enclosure which will help keep wind from killing the flame.

The downside to a camp stove is that they tend to be rather large and cumbersome plus they require fuel which you will have to purchase separately. While they are safer in terms of starting fires in the wilderness, they aren’t nearly as cozy and nostalgic as drinking your coffee by the campfire.

A single butane burner will be lighter in weight, for sure, but be sure to purchase a wind screen, too. Nothing kills breakfast quicker than a burner that won’t stay lit.

What are some no cook camping breakfast meal ideas?

As mentioned above, cereal, granola, yogurt, fruit (fresh and dried), and bagels with peanut butter are great options.

What breakfast ideas have more protein?

Eggs, Greek yogurt, hard cheese, meats, and some milk powders will have a full serving of protein. You can also increase the protein content of breakfast by adding seeds and nuts to the top of your toast, yogurt, oatmeal.

What is a good breakfast protein beside eggs?

Here are some ways and examples of high protein breakfast food ideas:

  • Find heartier breads with a higher protein count (look at whole grains and sprouted wheat options), then spread them with nut butters and a sprinkling of seeds and nuts on top
  • Greek yogurt (check the protein content), top it with seeds and nuts (chia, pumpkin, almond, shredded coconut, etc.)
  • Sprinkle granola, extra seeds and nuts on top of your chopped fresh fruit
  • Add a few slices of hard cheese to your breakfast
  • Make ahead sandwiches or wraps with cooked turkey or chicken, cheese, and avocado
  • Cook up some breakfast meats: bacon, sausage, ham
  • Have a few pieces of beef jerky with your morning meal
  • Prepare a batch of your favourite protein balls
  • Bring along some granola bars higher in protein. Clif bars (chocolate chip or fudge) are our favourite !

I hope you have found some helpful tips and tasty and easy breakfast ideas to try on your next camping trip. Happy camping (and eating)!

How to Cook Over an Open Fire

Learning to cook over an open fire can take some trial and error, but it’ll be an easy and delicious meal once you get the hang of it.

You can build a campfire to cook your breakfast with some tinder, logs, and sticks you find around your campsite. If you’re using just wood, make sure to collect enough that will last through cooking your meal. This is a great job for the kids!

Once the fire has gotten hot, you want to let the flames die down a bit before putting your food over the fire. Flames are okay, but the main thing is to not cook directly over a flame. Place your skillets, foil packets, or other cookware over indirect heat otherwise you’ll end up with food that is burned and cooked unevenly.

Easy Camping breakfast ideas that will make your mornings delightful

Here are the easy camping breakfast ideas to try on your next camping trip!

1. Burritos

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Sherry from Travel Mi

Who doesn’t love some breakfast burritos early in the morning before a long day of trekking?

Besides being an easy camping breakfast, Burritos can also be an easy dinner if you don’t have the energy to stand around a cookstove or fire for a long time after a day of adventures.

There are so many ways to make your breakfast burritos but if you wish to go meatless, which may be the easiest while camping, this is what you’ll need to take.

  • Soft flour tortilla shells
  • Bag of shredded cheese
  • Green or red peppers
  • Salt and Pepper

Soft tortillas are flat so they are easy to pack. And one of the easiest and the best camping food ideas is to transport the eggs by cracking them into a water bottle so that you don’t have to worry about them breaking.

For ease of prep, you can dice the onions and peppers at home, and pack them in individual bags so they are ready to cook at the campsite.

To prepare the burritos, cook the onions and peppers on your cook stove with some olive oil. Add the eggs near the end and cook until they’re no longer runny.

Assemble your burritos with your chosen ingredients and condiments. And if you like dipping your burritos in salsa, make sure you don’t forget to pack a small jar.

easy camping breakfast ideas

Making elaborate camping breakfasts is great and makes breakfast tastier but it also comes with a burden of preparation and cleaning.

So if you want to take a break from all that, why not try a no-cook camping breakfast like Cereal? It’s not only ideal but also easy to make especially if you’re camping with a toddler .

Rather than taking 20 minutes to get camping breakfast ready, you can have breakfast prepared in two minutes flat. All you need is your favorite bag of cereal , milk or milk alternative, a spoon, and a bowl , and you’re good to go!

You can even top your cereal off with fresh fruits, chia seeds, coconut flakes, or a side of avocado to add more substance to the meal.

It’s perfect when you’re camping at a National Park and want to get an early start to your day to beat the crowds. A great space-saving hack is to get rid of the cardboard box it comes with and pack only the plastic bag.

3. Wrap with cheese omelet

camping trip breakfast

Contributed By Lotte from  Gezond Weekmenu .

One of the tastiest and easiest breakfast recipes for camping or road-tripping with a campervan is a cheese omelet wrap.

It’s the best camping breakfast, especially when you plan on doing a hike or another outdoor activity for which you need a lot of energy.

This breakfast is easy to make, full of fiber (as long as you avoid plain wraps) and protein and it’s delicious (the most important thing about any dish). To make this breakfast, you only need three ingredients:

  • 1 wholewheat wrap (or veggie wrap such as a beetroot wrap)
  • Cheese (grated or sliced)

A quick note about the cheese : Please get some proper cheese. The better the cheese, the tastier your omelet wrap will be.

To prepare this meal, get a small bowl, break the egg, and whisk it. If you want, you can add a bit of milk but if you don’t have any that’s no problem.

Add some oil to a frying pan and pour the egg into the pan to make the omelet. Once you’ve flipped the omelet, put the cheese on top and turn the fire to low heat to let the cheese melt.

Once the cheese has melted, put the cheese omelet on the wrap, roll it (like a burrito), and tuck it in! And voila, you’ve just made yourself an easy camping breakfast.

4. Yogurt, Fruits, and Granola

camping breakfast recipes

Contributed by Chris from Punta Cana Travel Blog

One of the easy camping breakfasts is Yogurt, Fruits, and Granola. You can use any kind of fruits you like but the most suitable ones would be mangos, apples, and pineapples ( you can peel and dice it before the trip so that it doesn’t get mashed in the backpack).

Yogurt and granola are also easy to take, as they don’t need much space and are not too heavy.

Once it is time for breakfast, you can simply dice all the fruits with your pocket or camping knife , put them on your reusable camping plate , and top it off with your preferred amount of granola and yogurt. It is super quick to prepare, very healthy, and gives you energy for the day.

This breakfast can serve you well on all kinds of camping and hiking trips even if you’re hiking through the remote area of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

And if you need additional energy, you can also pack bananas, but make sure to carry them in a separate container as they get mashed very quickly.

Whether you’re planning to go on a remote road trip in Namibia or camp at the top of the mountain where access to supermarkets or fresh ingredients is limited, you’ll have to think of the simplest breakfast camping recipes.

And if you’re the kind of person that wakes up hungry looking for a hearty camping breakfast idea, the number one option is an omelet! It is easy to make, fast to prepare, has many nutrients and it is a wonderful way to start your morning.

The best thing about omelets is that you can be very versatile with the ingredients, as long as you have eggs. And if you want to take it beyond the ordinary omelet, here is what you’ll need.

  • Eggs: The main ingredient and the most important. Tip: If you are driving off-road and there is a chance of your eggs cracking, you can break them into a recycled plastic bottle and you will have scrambled eggs along the way.
  • Meat: You can use any variation that you have in your cooler such as bacon, ham, chicken, or sausages.
  • Vegetables: Anything soft like spinach, mushrooms, peppers, basil, or tomatoes can be added along with the egg mixture. Tip: You can have a can of vegetables too, such as peas, corn, carrots, or whatever you prefer. Honestly, a can of food is always a lifesaver during any camping trip.
  • Cheese: The best part about the omelet is to cheese up the eggs! You can use any type of cheese in your cooler.

When it comes to preparing the omelet, it’s very easy and fast. Mix all the ingredients you wish to add to your omelet in a container and warm up a cast-iron skillet with a tablespoon of oil, olive oil, or butter.

Add the egg mix to the skillet and let it cook on one side, and flip to the other side to make sure you cooked both sides to perfection! Grab a hot black coffee and enjoy your camping breakfast food!

If you’re planning to camp in the wild at basic campsites with no real amenities where you’re likely to take bucket showers or even dig your own toilet, there is no way you’ll want to spend hours figuring out various camping breakfast ideas.

Cooking needs to be simple, quick, and easy to clean up after. And one of the easy camping breakfast ideas to consider is pancakes. Here is what you’ll need to make them.

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • White sugar

You can take a Premade batter in a sealed flask or make it from scratch. All you need to do is to mix all the ingredients together one at a time until you form the batter.

Heat a pan over the fire with either oil or butter and then pour the pancake batter onto the pan in small proportions (depending on the size of the pancake you want).

Flip the pancake to cook the alternative side and your pancakes should be ready in a couple of minutes.

You can even add various toppings to your pancakes such as; bananas, berries, Nutella, syrup, or even savory items such as cheese or tomato. And if you want to make green pancakes, you can whizz up some spinach in the mix.

7. Premade Granola

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Rachel Rodda from Coffeewise

One of the simplest breakfast ideas for camping is Granola in a bag. Packed full of energy, quick, and easy to prepare, it is a go-to camping breakfast for a number of campers.

Perfect for hikers on multiday hikes or families looking for no cleanup meal ideas, all you need is a spoon and some water to prepare this meal.

You can use any store-bought granola for this breakfast, or you can make it yourself. The great thing about homemade granola is that you can customize it to include all your favorite ingredients.

Some of the great ingredients to include are almonds, coconut, dried cranberries, and sunflower seeds , but you can really throw in anything you like or have on hand.

To prepare this meal, before you head off for your trip, portion the granola into individual serve sealable bags. Then add around 1/3 cup of powdered milk to each bag and seal the bags.

When you are ready to eat the granola, simply add ½ cup cold water to the bag, re-seal, and shake to blend the powdered milk with the water and serve!

It literally takes a few minutes to prepare and you are ready to eat. Enjoy it with your morning coffee or cup of tea before heading off for the day.

No gas, pans, bowls, or clean-up is required. Once you are finished rinse the bag and re-use it as a rubbish bag in your daypack.

So if you’re looking for an easy breakfast for camping or even hiking, Granola is a perfect choice. It is not only crunchy, and tasty but also a healthy breakfast in a bag.

8. Scrambled Chickpeas on bread

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Nadine from Zero Waste Memoirs

One of the easy breakfast camping ideas to whip up that’ll leave you feeling full all morning is scrambled chickpeas on bread.

The perfect alternative to scrambled eggs, it’s perfect for those who don’t eat animal products, or who don’t want to have to transport fragile eggs in their van – and everyone will love the taste!

It also uses very few ingredients which makes it a great option for zero waste camping . You can buy your chickpeas raw and soak them, or buy them in glass jars , either way, you’ll be in for a treat while in the outdoors.

You can make this meal as fancy or as simple as you like, simply by adding or omitting a few ingredients.

The only non-optional ones are the chickpeas! If you have it, an onion and some crushed garlic add flavor, and adding a little turmeric, salt, and pepper at the end will season it perfectly.

Simply throw everything in a pan until the onion and garlic are cooked and the chickpeas are soft (you can add a little water if it’s too dry) and lightly mash the chickpeas with a fork once cooked through.

Serve on fresh or toasted bread with sliced tomato, avocado, or anything else you like on the side, and you’ve got a full and filling camping breakfast!

9. Loaded Home fries

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Karen from Outdoor Adventure Sampler

Home-fried potatoes are some of the best breakfast ideas for camping. They are a substantial morning meal that will fuel you for a full day of outdoor activities.

Pile on your favorite veggies or meats to make loaded home fries, the superfood of the camping world.

Home fries are easy to make in the backcountry, especially if you cook the potatoes beforehand.

Microwave the potatoes until they are soft. You will need one fist-size potato per person in your group. Store the cooked potatoes in a paper bag. Avoid plastic bags as the potatoes will get wet and mushy.

At the campsite, cut up the potatoes into bite-size chunks. Dice the onions, green and/or red peppers, or other favorite vegetables. Use a beefy skillet to get a good sear on the home fries. Add canola oil and get it sizzling.

Put the veggies in the pan and sweat the onions for a few minutes. Add the potatoes and cook until they are golden brown and season with salt and pepper.

If you have a meat-loving crew, dice up Canadian bacon to add while cooking. You can also add pre-cooked bacon to the potatoes. Crumble it over the top for the crunchy punch of flavor only bacon can give.

After the home fries are cooked to perfection, top with shredded cheddar cheese. Serve with scrambled or fried eggs to make the perfect easy breakfast for camping

10. Sausage & Egg sandwiches

breakfast food for camping

Contributed by Mikaela from Voyageur Tripper

When you’re camping, a sausage & egg sandwich is the perfect meal to start your day off right. It’s a camping cookbook staple – quick and easy so you can get to exploring sooner instead of hanging around camp all morning.

You’ll need sausage, eggs, bread – sliced bread or English muffins work best – and any toppings you may want.

To prepare the meal, start by cooking your sausage in patties. Then you can either fry one egg at a time or scramble them all together.

Toast your bread using the same pan if you’d like and then throw the sausage and egg between two slices of bread. The tools you’ll need are just a pan and a spatula.

Some delicious toppings you could add are cheese, avocado, and tomato though sometimes you can’t get too fancy while camping.

Depending on how many sandwiches you fix, this meal should only take about 30 minutes once your camping stove has warmed up.

If you want some sides to go with your sandwich, dehydrated fruit is a great option. You can fix this before your trip so there is no prep time at camp involved. If you need more carbs for the day then fix up a batch of oatmeal as well.

11. Apple Pie Porridge

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Jennifer Parkes from Backyard Travel Family

Porridge is such an easy thing to cook, but it can take a while depending on the type of porridge you choose to make. So with that in mind, quick oats porridge is the best alternative.

You can make your own quick oats from home by popping them into the food processors and whizzing them until they are broken down into more of a powder. Add a few teaspoons of cinnamon and raisins and pop them into a container, ready for cooking.

On a brisk morning while camping, just add milk or water to your quick oats mix, some grated apples, and cook to your liking.

If it’s a bit thick, just add some more liquid. By having the quick oats (you can also purchase these in the supermarket) you can drastically reduce your cooking time making this one of the easy breakfast ideas for camping.

Taking less than 5 minutes, you will have a warm breakfast fueling you for your outdoor adventures. And to make this Oat apple pie porridge, here is what you’ll need;

  • Quick porridge oats
  • Apple (grated)
  • Milk (or milk powder) or water

 12. Instant Noodles

instant noodles- camping food

Contributed by Allan Wilson from It’s Sometimes Sunny in Bangor

No matter where you are in the world, walk into a local convenience store or supermarket, and you’re almost guaranteed to find a range of instant noodles. Be it cup noodles or packets of noodles.

Cup noodles aka pot noodles in the UK would be the easier of the 2 to prepare, as they are built for convenience and eating on the go with their very own cup container.

Just boil some water and pour it in. But packet noodles are much more versatile and can be pimped up with tasty additions when eaten in a bowl.

A fiery sauce maybe, like a mala-style chili oil, along with some nutritious garnishing of spring onions, beansprouts, and ground peanuts.

There’s no need for additional cooking here as well but to really make a meal of it, why not make some soft-boiled eggs?

Then, if all else fails, it’s not really that bad to just eat them straight dry from the pack, like a giant crisp.

Options really are endless with this versatile snack, and they’re also silly cheap when bought in bulk and are no trouble to travel with and store.

Instant noodles are quite possibly the perfect camping food whether as a breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.

13. Tofu Scramble

camping trip breakfast

Contributed by Linn Haglund from Easy Way To Vegan

A tasteful and easy-to-make camping breakfast is Tofu Scramble. All you need is firm tofu and vegetables of your choice to have with it.

To spice it up and give it the right taste and color, pack with you half a teaspoon of black salt and a pinch of turmeric together with some salt and pepper in a small container or some cling film to save space.

It’s really easy to make vegan tofu scramble by frying it all in olive oil with onion and mushroom for a few minutes. They’re both ingredients that don’t weigh much so they’re easy to bring on a camping trip.

If you like it spicy, add a bit of fresh chili or powdered chili. Once the vegetables are ready, crumble the tofu in the pan and add the spices. Then it really just needs to fry up until it’s hot.

The best thing about tofu scramble is that you can eat it for breakfast as is, together with falafel and salad, or in a sandwich.

The leftovers can be put in a baguette and brought with you for lunch if you’re going on an adventure during the day. It also goes very well with avocado.

14. Pre-made quiche

camping breakfast quiche

Contributed by Brittany from Five Pax

Leaving the warm comfort of your sleeping bag while camping is a bit easier with the promise of a hearty and filling breakfast that requires next to no actual effort.

Accomplishing this and keeping your belly full throughout your morning adventures is a job for a pre-made quiche! The quiche can be loaded with veggies, meats, and cheeses to maximize flavor and energy-boosting power.

Recommended combinations include spinach, caramelized onion, ham, cheddar or onions, peppers, mushrooms , and gruyere .

Really any combination will do, so make to your preference, or whatever cheese and veggies you need to use up in the fridge before you hit the road.

When baking your quiche at home, be sure that it’s just done enough to hold its shape in transport, but not overdone as it will become quite rubbery when re-heated. This can be amended with a topping of fresh cheese at camp but preferably avoided.

Once cooled, cut wedges of quiche and individually wrap them in a foil or store them in a Tupperware container in your cooler.

When you rise and shine, or if you are totting a small pack of wild children like the FivePax family , the little people will rise and shine before the sun. Individual slices can be warmed up over a fire or on a camp stove pan.

Level up your Instagram photos by topping them with goat cheese, fresh herbs, or hot sauce.

This all-in-one meal requires no additional sides, a cup of coffee, however, is always recommended. Finally, clean-up is a breeze making a pre-made quiche a real winner of a campfire breakfast meal!

I do my camping breakfast skillet a bit differently. A bit of prep work makes for MUCH tastier potatoes, easier cooking, and better texture!

a cast iron skillet of potatoes, peppers, bacon, eggs, and cheese, topped with parsley. Overlaid text says camping skillet breakfast.

Before this summer, I hadn’t done a lot of campfire cooking, and hadn’t spent much time even considering what campfire breakfasts would even consist of.

My only real experience with cooking over an open fire was pretty much limited to hot dogs and marshmallows, after all!

This cast iron breakfast skillet - my take on a traditional “mountain man breakfast” may just be the perfect campfire breakfast!

If you have a huge skillet, you can easily scale the recipe up for feed a bigger crowd!

The star of the show, IMHO, and the hash browns.

I make my skillet breakfasts using the same technique I use for making The BEST Hash Browns Ever - pre cooking the potatoes in a flavourful broth, a day or two before making these easy breakfasts.

Not only is it a great way to infuse some fantastic flavour into the golden potatoes, it also makes for a much better texture and even cooking.

You don’t have any worries about whether not not the potato is cooked before it starts to overcook on the outside! My method ensures tender, golden potatoes every time!

The best part?

You can make and freeze the potatoes ahead of time, and cook them straight from frozen on your next camping trip!

A close up photo of camping breakfast hash in a cast iron skillet. Potatoes, peppers, onions, cheese, bacon, and eggs.

Ingredients

My camping breakfast skillet has a few more ingredients than most, but it’s TOTALLY worth it.

Not only does it taste better in the end, it makes for less work on the morning you’re cooking it.

Besides, they’re all really basic ingredients that can be found in pretty much any grocery store.

A few notes for you:

Precooked Potatoes

As far as the potatoes themselves go, you’re going to want to use waxy type potatoes - red potatoes or Yukon Gold are best for this recipe.

Then you’ll need some broth - I use chicken, but feel free to use vegetable broth if you prefer.

Beyond that, it’s all about seasoning the broth, to infuse the cooked potatoes with great flavour.

Celery, Onion, Garlic, Dijon Mustard, and dried herbs and spices (Dried sage, bay leaf, thyme, mustard powder, dried parsley, pepper, garlic powder, etc) are my go-tos, along with hot peppers.

I’ll usually add jalapeno pepper to mine, habanero on occasion. I just find that jalapeno gives the best flavour in combination with the other skillet ingredients.

Your mileage may vary - use whatever you like!

The Breakfast Skillet

Once you’ve got your prepared potatoes, you’ll want a bunch of other stuff to build the actual skillet.

In addition to the potatoes, I like to use an onion and some bell peppers.

Usually that’s red and green peppers, other times it’ll be one or the other, sometimes I’ll throw in some chopped poblano pepper for more of a South West feel.

That said, you could also use whatever your favorite veggies happen to be. If you’d eat it in an omelette, it’ll probably be fantastic in this skillet.

Broccoli, asparagus, spinach, cherry tomatoes, whatever!

Happen to pass a produce stand on the way to the campground, during corn season? Use a sharp knife to cut the kernels off 2 cobs of corn, toss them in with the peppers!

2 cobs of corn that have been shucked. The kernels are in a bowl next to the cobs and husks.

Here’s another way you can customize this pan.

I’ll usually use pork bacon, chicken bacon, or turkey bacon, depending on what mood I’m in.

Sometimes I’ll shake it up and use Peameal Bacon , Back Bacon , or chopped up breakfast sausage or country ham.

When going with any of these non-bacon options - or, for that matter, using the poultry bacon! - be sure to add some extra oil to the pan, as they won't be rendering off fat the way pork bacon does.

We use whole eggs, but if you prefer to use whites only, that works too.

Maybe just add a few extra eggs worth of whites, to make up for the loss of volume that happens when you skip the egg yolks.

For that matter, you don’t even have to scramble the eggs - you can cook them sunny side up in the middle of the pan - or a separate pan - and serve them on top of the rest of the skillet!

Shredded Cheese

We usually default to old / sharp cheddar cheese, but you can definitely have some fun with it and customize to your tastes.

Just use the “omelette rule”, and/or look at what else you’re using, and go with what’ll taste best.

Swiss Cheese, Monterrey Jack, Gouda, even Pepper Jack cheese are all great options!

Everything Else

Vegetable Oil Salt and Pepper Fresh parsley, green onions, and/or chives - optional

Freezing the Premade Potatoes

Want to take the prep work to another level of convenience?

You can make the potatoes - even in bulk - freeze them, and just cook them up from frozen whenever you want - here’s how:

1. Once you’ve cooked the potatoes, drain them VERY well. You want them to be as dry as possible, because added moisture on the surface = more potential for freezer burn.

2. Spread the potatoes out in a single layer on parchment lined baking sheets, freeze until the potato pieces are frozen through.

3. Once frozen, break up any potato clusters (frozen together), and transfer to freezer bags. I aim to get 1 batch of breakfast skillet’s worth of potatoes to each bag.

4. Squeeze or suck as much of the air as possible from the freezer bag, then seal. (This is a great use for a vacuum sealing bag, if you have one! We like to label the bag with the name and date of what’s in it, either way.

5. Return to the freezer until you’re ready to use them.

A hand holds a bag of frozen potato cubes in front of a skillet over a charcoal grill.

To Use Frozen Potatoes

Don’t thaw the potatoes before using.

Toss the frozen potatoes in with the bacon and onions, allowing the 3 ingredients to cook together.

There will be some moisture coming out of the potatoes. This is fine, as the onions also release moisture. It will all cook off as the bacon cooks.

2 part image showing the frozen potatoes added to the pan of bacon and onions, and cooked down.

Once the potatoes have thawed and are starting to brown a little, proceed with the rest of the recipe, as written.

4 part image showing a well in the middle of the fried potatoes and veggies, then egg added, scrambled, and topped with shredded cheese and parsley.

Breakfast Skillet made with frozen potatoes can be served, cooled, and stored the same way as the regular recipe is.

How to Make the BEST Camping Breakfast Skillet

The full recipe is in the recipe card at the end of this post, here is a pictorial walk through.

A day or 2 before you want to make the breakfast skillet:

  • Place chicken broth, celery, onion, garlic, peppers - if using - and any other desired seasonings into a large pot.
  • Taste, make adjustments as necessary.

Note: In general, the broth in general should be WAY more potent than something you’d have as a soup. It should NOT be “drinkable”!

Once you’ve got a good mix going, bring to a boil over medium heat or medium high heat.

Turn heat down and simmer on low for 10 minutes or so.

  • Once the time is up, use a slotted spoon to remove all the solids from the pot. Alternatively, strain through a mesh colander, into another pot.

A 5 part image showing the chicken broth being boiled with the flavouring ingredients, then after being strained.

  • Chop potato into bite sized chunks, add to the pot.
  • Boil potatoes for about 15 minutes, or until just fork tender. Strain potatoes, allowing excess moisture to drip off as much as possible. Discard broth.

Allow potatoes to cool to room temperature.

Transfer potatoes to a large bowl, airtight container, or plastic bag. Put in the fridge to chill overnight.

4 part image showing the potatoes cooking in the flavoured broth, then the strained cooked potatoes in a food storage container.

To Make The Breakfast Skillet:

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet, Dutch oven, or cast iron skillet over medium heat (stove top or camp stove), hot coals, or a low fire.

Add bacon and onion to the pan.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is cooked through and the onion is translucent and tender.

Leaving rendered bacon grease in the pan, add the precooked potatoes. You can use a little more oil, if necessary.

  • Continue cooking until the potatoes are just starting to brown up a bit.

5 part image showing the onions and bacon cooking in a large cast iron pan over a fire, then the potatoes added and mixed in.

  • Whisk the eggs in a mug or small bowl, along with a little salt and pepper.
  • Use a spatula to make a clearing in the middle of the potatoes / vegetable mix.

5 part image showing the eggs being mixed, the peppers added to the potatoes, and the pepper/potato mix being pushed to the sides of the pan.

Cook, scrambling the eggs, until almost cooked through - 2-3 minutes or so.

Use the spatula to break the eggs up a bit, then gently mix the surrounding vegetables in with the scrambled eggs.

Season with a pinch of salt - if needed.

4 part image showing eggs being added to the center of the pan and scrambled, then stirred into the rest of the ingredients.

Top the whole thing with shredded cheese, cover with the top of the skillet and remove from heat.

2 part image showing cheese being added to the top of the ingredients, then covered with the lid.

Garnish with chopped fresh herbs, sour cream, hot sauce - or whatever else you like - and serve immediately.

A cast iron pan with potatoes, eggs, peppers, cheese, and bacon, resting on a camping table.

Once cooled, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or so.

Reheats well in the microwave - the potatoes won’t be as crispy as when they’re fresh, but it still tastes great!

a number of bread rolls in a dutch oven

Cooking breakfast on a campfire is one of my favorite things about camping. The sun wakes you up early so you can get right to the coffee and ease your way into a scrumptious meal to start your day.

Many campers own a Dutch oven. Maybe you haven’t used yours in a while. They’re one of the heavier items to bring camping, but I think the weight is worth it when I’m driving right up to my campground. Dutch oven cooking is easy and offers a range of cooking possibilities. Whether you’re cooking for two or for a whole family, try a Dutch oven breakfast the next time you hit the trails.

Put Your Pot to Use With 15 Dutch Oven Breakfast Ideas

You can use a Dutch oven to bake, braise, fry or sauté. Almost any traditional camping recipe can be made in a Dutch oven. Try one of these delicious breakfast camping meals on your next trip.

1. Soda Bread

a loaf of irish soda bread wrapped in a napkin

Fresh, hot bread slathered with butter is the best on a cool morning with a hot cup of coffee. But, who wants to knead the dough while camping? Thank goodness for quick bread! This soda bread recipe will make a loaf that serves four people, and is one of the more basic baked goods you can make in your dutch oven.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1-1/3 cup cold buttermilk

Directions:

  • Grease or line a 12-inch Dutch oven with parchment paper, and then preheat to 450 F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, salt and baking soda until combined.
  • Add the pieces of cold butter into the bowl and use a pastry blender or a fork to cut the butter through the flour mixture.
  • Add the buttermilk in slowly. Then, use a rubber spatula to stir until a soft dough forms. The mixture should be very soft-almost a thick batter instead of a dough. If the dough seems dry, add in another ⅓ cup of buttermilk.
  • Pour the dough into the prepared Dutch oven, and use a sharp knife to score an X into the dough–cut deep, almost all the way to the bottom of the dough.
  • Put the lid on with 11 hot coals on the bottom and 22 on top of the lid.
  • Bake for 35 minutes or until the top is a deep golden brown.
  • Remove from heat and remove it immediately from the Dutch oven.
  • Serve with butter and jam.

2. Mountain Man Breakfast Casserole

A Dutch oven mountain man breakfast casserole doesn’t just  sound like a mouthful, it fully is one. This classic Dutch oven breakfast is perfect for large groups, it’s hearty and sure to fuel your day-long hiking adventures. This recipe serves 4-6 people, depending on how hungry your guests are.

  • 2 pounds pork or turkey sausage
  • 2 pounds frozen hash brown potatoes
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Preheat the Dutch oven to 350 F.
  • Break up the sausage into the oven and fry until well done.
  • While the sausage is cooking, break open the eggs into a separate bowl. Beat the eggs with the milk, set aside.
  • Remove cooked sausage and place into a bowl.
  • Spread the hash browns evenly in bottom of the Dutch oven. Lightly brown the potatoes.
  • Place cooked sausage over potatoes.
  • Pour the beaten eggs over sausage layer and sprinkle the top with grated cheese.
  • Re-lid the Dutch oven, and bake at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes or until eggs are fully cooked.
  • Serve immediately.

3. No-Knead Campground Bread Rolls

a number of bread rolls baking in a dutch oven

No-knead breads use a long rising time instead of kneading to form the gluten strands that give the bread its texture. This means you’ll have hot, fresh bread without all the fuss. When baked in a Dutch oven, you get a delicious roll that’s crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. This recipe only makes six rolls, so feel free to double everything if you’re looking to feed a full group of young, hungry campers with this Dutch oven breakfast.

Tip: Prep the bread dough the night before your trip, and let it rise overnight.

  • 2-3 teaspoons kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1½ cups warm water
  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt, and yeast.
  • Stir in water using a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a wet dough–be careful not to overwork the dough.
  • Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap let it sit at temperature for 8-24 (it should double in size)
  • Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface, and with floured hands, form the dough into a ball and divide it into 6 equal-sized pieces.
  • Gently form the dough into round balls, cover loosely and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • Grease and preheat your Dutch oven to 450 F.
  • Once the rolls have rested for 30 minutes, place them into the Dutch oven.
  • Bake at 450 F for 30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Once done, remove the rolls from the Dutch oven and place on a cooling rack or plate.
  • Serve warm.

Scones are near cousins to biscuits, but way easier to make. They have a hint of sweetness with a full buttery flavor — a perfect treat for those early camp mornings, and a breeze to prepare. This recipe makes 8-12 scones.

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into pieces
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar, for sprinkling on top
  • Grease and preheat the Dutch oven to 375 F.
  • Blend together the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work in the cold butter.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, yogurt and vanilla extract.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined.
  • With a large spoon, drop the dough into the prepared Dutch oven, and sprinkle the tops of the dough with sugar.
  • Put the lid on with 9 hot coals on the bottom and 18 on top of the lid.
  • Bake at 375 F for 20-24 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and serve warm.

  • Roll the long edge of the dough to form a tight roll.
  • Cut the roll into 16 slices.
  • Allow the slices rolls to rise until doubled in size.
  • Grease and preheat Dutch oven to 400 F.

How to Cook with a Dutch Oven Like a Pro

a dutch oven pot near a campfire

We understand that Dutch ovens might seem like an advanced way to cook at the campground — but the truth is, they’re easier than they look. Here are some fast tips to get you going quicker with your Dutch oven breakfast ideas.

General Recipe Notes

All the recipes use a 12-inch camp Dutch oven. If you are using a smaller or larger Dutch oven, be sure to refer to the above chart to adjust the temperature accordingly. Also, unless noted, preheat the coals prior to mixing up the recipes. To make clean up easier, use Dutch oven liners.

How to Regulate Temperatures on your Dutch Oven

Getting the desired cooking temperatures is half the battle when cooking in a camp Dutch oven. Regulating the temperature in a Dutch oven is part art and part science. This handy guide from Scouting Magazine should give you a general idea for how many hot coals are needed to achieve the right cooking temperatures.

How to Preheat a Dutch Oven

Most of these recipes require you to preheat the Dutch oven. Follow these steps to preheat your Dutch oven:

  • Heat charcoal in a charcoal chimney or in a pile in your fire ring (heat at least twice as much as you think you will need).
  • Pace the oven over a bed of briquettes, and heap more briquettes on the top.
  • The number of coal briquettes used determines the temperature your Dutch oven will reach on the inside (see the coal-temperature conversion chart).
  • In general, each charcoal briquette is worth about 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Allow the oven at least 20-30 minutes to preheat.

Breakfast burritos.

When you want something just a bit different than standard eggs and bacon or you're on the go, breakfast burritos are the answer. Best of all, you can make them ahead of time and wrap them individually, and they freeze very well.

It doesn't get much easier (or fun!) than walking tacos. Just assemble your favorite taco fillings, then put them all in an individual-sized Fritos bag. Best of all: no cleanup!

Hot Ham n' Cheese Sandwiches

A classic ham n' cheese sandwich is already one of the most classic camping meals, but making a hot version really takes it to the next level! Heat it in a pan like a grilled cheese or put it right over a campfire.

This is one of our favorite quick and easy camping meals. Assemble nachos in a cast iron pan or on a sheet pan, then serve directly from that. For extra fun, get small pans and let everyone make their own personal-sized plate of nachos!

Loaded Brats or Hot Dogs

Always a crowd pleaser, hot dogs or brats deserve a regular spot in your arsenal of go-to meals. Pick a theme, like German or Chicago-style dogs, or set out an assortment of toppings and let people make their own.

Stuffed Baked Potatoes

Another fan favorite, “stuffed” or “loaded” baked potatoes are quick and inexpensive. Make them with regular or sweet potatoes and get creative with toppings. One of our favorite camping hacks is to load them up with leftovers!

Easy Camping Meals - Dinner

Sausage & peppers.

Using literally just a few ingredients, this satisfying camping meal comes together in just minutes. Cook it in a skillet or throw everything together in foil packets and toss them right on top of the campfire. Bonus: leftovers are even better!

One-pot Lasagna

Lasagna isn’t associated with camping foods. In fact, it’s just the opposite! But in this version, you make a “deconstructed” lasagna, without assembly. Now you can make this crowd favorite, even if you have a tiny kitchen!

No-Bake Camping Meals

Diy yogurt parfaits.

For a quick, easy camping breakfast or satisfying snack, make DIY yogurt parfaits. Start with vanilla or strawberry yogurt, then set out a variety of toppings for everyone to create their own, like granola, berries, and chocolate chips.

Stuffed Avocados

If you've never had stuffed avocados, you're in for a treat (and we can pretty much guarantee they'll become your go-to). Halve ripe avocados, then fill each half with chicken or tuna salad, salsa, or another combo that strikes your fancy.

BLT Sandwiches

It's easy to overlook old standbys like the classic BLT, but this actually makes one of the very best camping meals (hint: cold bacon is just as good as hot!). Pro tip: make big batches of bacon every few days and use it as needed.

For a surprisingly easy meal, assemble a cobb salad (it comes together even faster if you use pre-prepped ingredients!). Centered around protein-packed ingredients like eggs, bacon, and chicken, this doesn't feel much like a salad!

Charcuterie

If you're looking at this thinking charcuterie isn't a meal, we hate to tell you this, but you've been doing it wrong. A tray or plate loaded with meats, cheeses, veggies, nuts, toppings, and whatever else you're craving — it's the perfect meal!
