Romain Bardet mènera l'effectif de la formation dsm-firmenich PostNL sur le Tour d'Italie (4-26 mai), où il espère bien figurer au classement général.

Dauphin de Tadej Pogacar sur Liège-Bastogne-Liège , Romain Bardet va enchaîner comme prévu avec le Tour d'Italie (4-26 mai) qui s'élance samedi à Turin, et où le Français va tenter de bien figurer au classement général. Le grimpeur a déjà participé deux fois à l'épreuve, en 2021 où il s'était classé septième, et en 2022 où il était en lice pour le podium avant de tomber malade, contraint de jeter l'éponge durant la 13e étape.

Le coureur de 33 ans, qui doublera cet été avec le Tour de France mais dans un rôle de chasseur d'étapes, dit vouloir « être régulier tout au long des trois semaines, (se) battre pour la victoire sur les étapes de montagne et voir où cela (le) mène au général » sur la route de Rome. Il sera épaulé dans sa mission par l'Australien Chris Hamilton, le Néerlandais Gijs Leemreize et l'Américain Kevin Vermaerke.

Le reste de l'équipe sera structuré autour du sprinteur néerlandais Fabio Jakobsen, qui participera au Giro pour la toute première fois de sa carrière, et qui bénéficiera notamment du soutien du Danois Tobias Lund Andresen, récent triple vainqueur d'étape sur le Tour de Turquie .

Romain Bardet aura la lourde de tâche de mener le collectif de la dsm-firmenich PostNL sur le Tour d'Italie (4-26 mai). Il aura comme objectif de ramener une bonne place au classement général.

Après une deuxième place plus qu'encourageante sur Liège-Bastogne-Liège , Romain Bardet va enchaîner avec le Tour d'Italie (4-26 mai) qui partira de Turin samedi. Lui qui a déjà participé deux fois à l'épreuve (7e en 2021, abandon en 2022) aura comme objectif de bien figurer au classement général. Pour atteindre cet objectif il sera épaulé par l'Australien Chris Hamilton, le Néerlandais Gijs Leemreize et l'Américain Kevin Vermaerke.

Le reste de l'équipe néerlandaise se focalisera sur le sprinteur Fabio Jakobsen qui pédalera pour la première fois sur les routes italiennes. Il sera notamment soutenu par le Danois Tobias Lund Andresen, récent triple vainqueur d'étape sur le Tour de Turquie.

Interview | Romain Bardet showing promising signs as main goal of 2023 approaches: "Tour is just around the corner for him"

W hile the focus is mainly on one particular Dutch team (Jumbo-Visma) in preparation for the Tour de France , another Dutch team ( Team DSM ) is quietly doing very well too. Team leader Romain Bardet is already showing promising things leading up to the tour of his home country, so IDLProCycling.com deduces from a conversation with coach Pim Ligthart.

In the pretty much exclusively flat time trial of the Tour de Suisse, Bardet finished 25th, ahead of specialists like Søren Kragh Andersen, Rohan Dennis and even Wilco Kelderman. "That time trial was very good. We invest a lot of energy in time trials, so it's definitely heading in the right direction," Ligthart observed.

So how exactly does this work for someone who narrowly missed the Tour podium in Marseille in 2017 - by a mere second? "We have tested aerodynamics, positioning... we just returned from altitude, where we also had a time trial bike available. So, a lot of training goes into it, but it's a process that has been ongoing for a few years and it keeps getting better and better."

"This indicates that his form is good, it's a nice start," Ligthart reiterates, not wanting to draw too many conclusions for the rest of the week in Switzerland. "We also know that after an altitude training camp, you can always have a slightly off day, so we're taking it day by day here in Switzerland. Ultimately, we have a classification in mind, but there might be a day where things don't go as well as we had hoped."

Bardet "super motivated" for Tour de France with Puy de Dome

Bardet is one of those men who rides somewhat under the radar in the lead-up to the Tour de France, but people often forget that we are talking about someone who was second overall after the Granon stage last year and also seemed well on his way to contend for the Giro d'Italia victory before his stomach problems. "Last year, he had a very good Tour until he started feeling a bit sick on the second rest day. Prior to that, he was really up there, so we really thought a podium finish was possible."

"This year, the Tour is right in his backyard, with the finish at Puy de Dome," Ligthart points out. "He is super motivated for that, but first, we have the final test here in Switzerland." The fact that there hasn't been much talk about Bardet - at least before the Tour de Suisse - doesn't bother the team manager. "I'm not personally asking for more journalists to stop by. We're just focused on what we're doing, and things are going very well that way."

On the path of Romain Bardet

The finish at Le Bettex above the Alpine city of Saint-Gervais evokes the Maillot Jaune Ronan Pensec conquered in 1990 from Canada’s Steve Bauer and the stage win of Romain Bardet in 2016. The latter had disobeyed to his sport directors who were happy with the fifth place overall. He rode away with his lieutenant Mikaël Chérel in the downhill of Domancy to cap it off on the same course used for stage 15 this year, throughout the steep and narrow côte des Amerands. He moved to second overall, his best result in Paris. Sadly, he won’t even have a chance to try and repeat his exploit since he crashed out yesterday. However, it remains an opportunity for attackers to go for a mountain stage win. It didn’t work out for them yesterday as Thibaut Pinot and Co were the victims of the Pogacar-Vingegaard duel. The Slovenian and the Dane won’t let each other in peace but Le Bettex isn’t the most suitable climb for a difference to be created between them.

ROMAIN BARDET: "THERE ARE ALWAYS STRONG RIDERS AND A BIG BATTLE ON PARIS-NICE"

 After two years essentially focused on the Giro, Romain Bardet has put the general classification of the Tour de France back in his sights for 2023 and thus returns to Paris-Nice with this in mind. Ten years after his debut in the Race to the Sun, the Frenchman will ride for the first time in the DSM jersey of the Dutch team, with which he has been since the 2021 season. Fifth in the general classification in 2019, he will have the opportunity to measure himself against Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar this year.

  main Bardet, how do you feel after the opening races that launched your season in the south of France?

I think this was the best programme to allow me to prepare for Paris-Nice, the best way to arrive in shape. I am not yet at my peak, but my legs are good. I have to get over a little virus which weakened me last weekend, but it will pass quickly. I had a mechanical problem in the Ardèche, which prevented me from going for the win, and the next day on the Drôme Classic, I felt that I was lacking a bit of punch in the run to the finish. But despite the cold, it was still a very intense race, and this work was helpful.

you remember the 2013 Paris-Nice and your sixth place in Brioude, which is still your best result on a stage?

  What do you mean?

think it's the toughest one-week race on the entire calendar. It is right behind the big tours. It is not where I feel most at ease, but there is always a good fight. The tension is constant. It's a difficult race, with always a steep stage early in the week, then there is the wind factor, then a time trial, and then the final weekend with a series of climbs. The Dauphiné is easier for me because the ascent is more progressive. And Tirreno-Adriatico has more days reserved for the sprinters, so it is not as hard.

Have you made this Paris-Nice an intermediate objective?

More than anything else, it is an essential race in the build-up to my season. Getting my bearings with a new group will be one of the challenges. I spent some time with my teammates in training. We have excellent young riders and real talents. Casper Van Iden and Pavel Bittner are more sprinter-punchers. They need to get their teeth into it. And Max Poole is only 19 years old, but he is a great climber in the making. He fell last Sunday, and I still hope he can be with us so that he can dive into the deep end.   The

Col de la Couillole stage will be the big event, but have you been able to study the route in detail?

First, I will make a reconnaissance ride of the opening stage, which could be good. Then, the team time trial is a double-edged sword because of the armadas that will be present. As for the rest, I know the sector very well of the last three stages, and I can tell you that the La Colle-sur-Loup ascent is tremendously difficult, and you can't be off that day. As for the La Couillole climb, I have already ridden it several times, and I did it again last week.

a general classification rider, is it realistic to aim for victory with favourites like Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar?

We'll see. They've been flying since the start of the season. And they are also with some big teams, that's for sure. But whatever happens, there are always strong riders and a big battle in Paris-Nice. So, I still go there saying I will ride my race. I have to rely on my legs first and my form.

Romain Bardet sees a brutal opening phase of the 2023 Tour de France , and he likes it.

Team DSM captain Bardet hailed race organizer ASO and its explosive, climb-laden opening week of next year’s Tour when he spoke with L’Equipe on Thursday.

“It’s a super exciting course. I’m really surprised by the ingenuity of ASO and how they manage to think outside the box. It’s an unprecedented look, I’ve never seen it, so little time traling and such a difficult start,” Bardet told L’Equipe .

ASO lifted the curtain on its 2023 Tour de France on Thursday in what has become one of the most hotly hyped of the pro cycling season.

A puncheur’s delight of an opening in the Basque Country makes way for a venture into the mountains as early as stage 5, with a trip over the Tourmalet and a summit finish atop Cautarets-Cambasque on tap by stage 6.

Throw in the return of the mythical Puy de Dôme climb for the first time since 1988, and next year’s Tour will be one to tune in for from the start.

“The Pyrénées right away, the Puy de Dôme at the end of the first week … it’s the most difficult first week of a grand tour that has ever existed,” Bardet enthused. “The hierarchy will already be clear after nine stages.”

Two-time champion Tadej Pogačar likewise relished ASO’s climb-heavy course Thursday, saying “the first week is already hard, and the third week is really hard.”

The Slovenian will line up as the top favorite alongside defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, while Bardet will headline French hopes.

The 31-year-old hit top gear again since joining DSM last year and will go well on a course light on TTs. His countryman Thibaut Pinot is mulling missing his home Tour, leaving David Gaudu the home nation’s next-best hope behind Bardet.

Bardet: Puy de Dome will be ‘crazy, magical’

Bardet carries some local advantage into the iconic showstopper of the Tour’s opening phase, the stage 9 summit finish atop the dormant Puy de Dôme volcano.

The Auvergne ascent saw some of the most mythical battles of Tour lore before a rack railway toward the 1,500m summit was built and the road was shut to traffic and cyclists in 2012.

Hailing from the nearby Brioude, Bardet has seen the talking point of Christian Prudhomme’s 2023 Tour closer than some.

“It’s my heart’s pass, ‘the lighthouse’ as we call it back home. Since the introduction of the railway, the road is completely closed: it has become a narrow service road that does not allow bikes and cars to pass. The ban is unconditional. Access is only open one morning a year, from 7am to 9am, and a TT (the Trophée des Grimpeurs) took place there last September, I was there with my father,” Bardet told l’Equipe .

“It’s going to be crazy, magical. To be honest, I’m having a little trouble realizing it. I never thought I could experience that in my career.”

The likes of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard have taken cycling to a new level, says Romain Bardet, as he was unveiled as Team DSM's leader for the 2023 Tour de France. Bardet says he will have to consider "different paths" if he wants to make it onto the podium - or better - and cited Geraint Thomas as his inspiration. "We raced aggressively like we had planned" - Romain Bardet animated but loses time on stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana

Team DSM-Firmenich were animated throughout stage 3 of the 2023 Vuelta a Espana , towards the front for most of day. Sadly for Romain Bardet , he wasn't able to reward them with a stage win.

“Today we raced aggressively like we had planned," the Frenchman said in a post-stage interview with his team's official website after coming home in 19th place, 31 seconds down on stage winner Remco Evenepoel. "The guys did a great job and I was able to try to go clear on the penultimate climb. Unfortunately it didn’t work out."

Even more disappointingly, it wasn't just a case of not having the legs either. Bardet was also put to the sword by a late mechanical. "I refocused on the final but a mechanical with one and a half kilometres to go held me back from the front group," he laments. "We are looking forward to the sprint finish tomorrow.”

"The boys did a really good job at that and we were present and where we needed to be coming into the climbs," added coach, Phil West. " Romain was in contention but he had a small mechanical issue with around one kilometre to go which meant that a gap opened up in front of him and he wasn’t able to come back. It’s a little bit of a shame but overall I’m happy with how the guys rode today as a team and we’ll try again in the next days.”

Bardet vise le classement général

C’est en tant que leader de l’équipe DSM-Firmenich PostNL que Romain Bardet va prendre le départ de son troisième Giro ce samedi à Turin. Le coureur français de 33 ans, qui dispute peut-être la dernière saison de sa carrière, sera l’atout numéro un de l’équipe néerlandaise pour le classement général, alors que le sprinteur néerlandais Fabio Jakobsen sera chargé de décrocher des victoires d’étapes.

« Nous nous rendons au Giro avec une équipe qui a montré lors des dernières courses qu’elle était en bonne forme et le moral est bon au sein du groupe, affirme Matt Winston, le coach de l’équipe. Nous avons l’ambition d’obtenir les meilleurs résultats dans les sprints avec Fabio, et un groupe de sprinteurs qui a montré de grands progrès dans le récent Tour de Turquie (trois victoires pour Andresen, ndlr). Nous visons également le meilleur classement général possible avec Romain, tout en cherchant à nous battre pour les victoires d’étape et les meilleurs résultats sur les terrains vallonnés et montagneux. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, nous devrons bien travailler en tant que groupe tout au long de la course, en roulant comme une unité et en donnant tout l’un pour l’autre pendant les trois semaines, afin que nous puissions nous montrer à l’avant. »

Bardet n’était pas loin en 2022…

Contraint à l’abandon en raison de maux d’estomac lors de la 13eme étape du Giro 2022 alors qu’il était quatrième du classement général avec six secondes d’avance sur celui qui a remporté la course, Jai Hindley, Romain Bardet espère jouer un rôle dans cette édition 2024. « J’ai découvert le Giro avec l’équipe en 2021 (il avait fini 7eme, ndlr). Je l’ai fait deux fois jusqu’à présent et les deux fois j’ai vraiment apprécié, donc je suis content et vraiment motivé pour le refaire cette année. Nous espérons être présents et nous battre pour les résultats dans autant d’étapes que possible. Personnellement, j’espère être constant au cours des trois semaines, être à mon meilleur niveau et me battre pour la victoire dans ces étapes de montagne et voir où cela nous mène au classement général. Je pense que si nous sommes capables d’obtenir une victoire d’étape dans les sprints et en montagne, et un bon résultat au classement général, alors ce sera un excellent Giro pour nous ».

Alors que Tadej Pogacar fait figure d’immense favori, Romain Bardet semble en mesure de se mêler à la lutte avec des coureurs comme Geraint Thomas, Ben O’Connor, Nairo Quintana ou Michael Woods. Cinquième du Tour des Alpes puis deuxième de Liège-Bastogne-Liège lors de ses deux courses d’avril, le coureur français arrive en tout cas en Italie en pleine forme.

Romain Bardet: The first part of the Tour de France is the hardest

French rider takes aim at the Tour de Suisse and talks motivation and retirement possibilities after 2024

Romain Bardet (Team DSM) returns to racing at the Tour de Suisse (June 11-18) this weekend and the Frenchman is aiming to be protagonist in the mountain stages before fine-tuning his form ahead of the Tour de France in July.

Bardet’s 2023 season has been hampered by illness, including a bout of COVID, but he has been resolutely consistent in terms of results, picking up top tens in Paris-Nice, the Tour de Romandie and La Flèche Wallonne. A three-week block of altitude training spanned his calendar in late May and early June, and while he made his way to Switzerland ahead of Sunday’s stage 1, he spoke to GCN about his hopes for the weeks ahead.

“I’m looking forward to the race. It’s probably no secret that the Dauphiné is probably my favourite stage race on the calendar but going into the Tour de France, I think that Suisse might be the best option,” the Frenchman said.“We’ve been working really hard with a camp in Teide and now I’m just excited to be pinning a number on again. The timing is the main reason I’ve gone for Suisse over the Dauphiné.”

When it comes to the Tour de France and building form, timing is one of the key elements. Usually the first week of the Tour is littered with flat stages, but this year’s Grand Depart in Spain is one of the toughest in recent years. Stage 1 alone has 3,000m of climbing, while stage 5 from Pau to Laruns could blow the race apart. Stage 9 to Puy de Dôme, which comes just before the first rest day, could be even more significant in the race for the yellow jersey, and Bardet believes that a slow start will cost GC riders dearly if they arrive at the Tour undercooked.

“To be honest, I think that the first part of the Tour is the hardest,” he told GCN .“I’ve never seen that before in the Tour and that’s going to be a new experience. For me, more or less, the rankings after the first rest day will be similar to the ones that we’ll probably see in Paris at the end of the race. For sure, if you’re out of shape in the first week then you’ll struggle for a GC result. That’s why we wanted to concentrate on a big training load in May and early June and then head to Suisse before a short taper.

“The first week, on paper, looks so difficult, and if you’re not in top shape for the opening weekend then you might end up losing time. The first stage looks really hard and the race could explode there and then by the time we reach the Pyrenees and then stage 9 with Puy de Dôme, there could be a lot of fatigue. If you just take the first part as a one-week stage race, it’s one of the hardest week-long races of the year, and we’ll still have two weeks to go.”

In terms of the here and now, Bardet is focused on the Tour de Suisse, a race he’s never competed in during his long and illustrious career. Despite his modest interpretation of his season to date, the 32-year-old is motivated to leave a lasting impression on the summer ahead.

“Nothing has really gone my way this season,” he said. “I had a lot of trouble with sickness in almost all of my races. From the week before Paris-Nice, all the way through the end of Catalunya, where I had to pull out, I was never at 100 percent. Then I had really good shape in the Classics but then had COVID. I hope that my health is now good, and this is my favourite part of the year.

“My main hope for Suisse is to be really consistent in the hard mountain stages and to fight for those wins. Then I’ll see how I did with the time trials because they’ll be a big part of the final GC. I might be a bit below some of the faster time trialists but the main aim is to build on confidence in the mountain stages. I’ll take it day-by-day but I’ll focus on being competitive in the mountain stages.” 

Once Suisse is out of the way all attention will return to the Tour de France. The Team DSM leader finished sixth in 2022, despite a less than ideal preparation, and he knows that the battle for the podium in 2023 will be a hard-fought affair. More than placing inside the top five or top ten, Bardet is aiming to show his characteristics and leave an entertaining and aggressive impression on the three-week race.

“There will be a massive competition for the top five and the podium because there will be a lot of riders, maybe ten, who are behind Pogačar and Vingegaard who can be competitive. For me, I just want to be able to show myself and be a protagonist,” he said. “I want to be one of the main actors of the race. I don’t want to finish the race in the top ten but just follow before I’m dropped at some point. That’s the last thing I want. I want to show myself, and with the team, be a real protagonist.”Bardet has forged a career as one of the most likeable and charismatic riders in the men’s WorldTour. However, at 32, he is admittedly closer to the end of his career than the start, and with compatriot Thibaut Pinot hanging up his wheels at the end of the year, Bardet - who is the same age as the Groupama-FDJ rider - is well aware that he only has a finite amount of racing ahead of him.

For now, the focus is entirely on the last 18 months of his current contract with DSM, while the future will likely depend on how the Frenchman fairs in stage races, and how motivated he is to prolong his time in the sport. Right now, the fire within Bardet burns bright, and the hope is that he arrives at the Tour in red hot form.

“To be honest, right now I’m not looking beyond 2024,” he said.“It’s so hard to be competitive and it takes so much from you but I still feel that I have some things to achieve in my career. I still have a year and a half left, and then we’ll see, but I’m very motivated for my remaining time with the team. I don’t know if next year will be my final season, it’s 50-50 and it really depends on how I perform and how I fit with my role and my standards. I’ll get the answers that I need in the next Grand Tours.”

Romain Bardet finally on the Tour of Italy

The French runner announced it on Tuesday 19 April via Eurosport and on his Instagram account, he will participate in the Tour of Italy which will start from Hungary on 6 at 29 next may.

Romain Bardet visera le classement général sur le Tour de France, qui sera son principal objectif en 2023, a-t-il annoncé mardi lors de la présentation de la saison de son équipe DSM à Calpe, sur la côte orientale de l'Espagne.

Pour le grimpeur français de 32 ans, le rendez-vous du Tour est d'autant plus évident qu'il y aura cette année trois étapes dans sa région auvergnate, quasiment sous ses fenêtres, dont celle menant au Puy de Dôme, sommet mythique qui sera escaladé pour la première fois en 35 ans cet été.

"Je vis au pied du Puy de Dôme, ce sera l'une des grandes attractions", a souligné Bardet dans la station balnéaire espagnole.

"Viser le classement, c'est un challenge excitant face à certains mecs qui me sont supérieurs. Il y aura les deux machines (Tadej Pogacar et Jonas Vingegaard, NDLR) devant mais derrière il y a une belle densité et des choses à faire", a ajouté le coureur auprès de l'AFP.

L'année dernière, le Français avait fait du Tour d'Italie sa priorité. Dans une forme éclatante, il était parti pour jouer le podium voire la victoire, la première d'un Français dans un grand Tour depuis Laurent Jalabert sur la Vuelta en 1995, mais avait dû abandonner après être tombé malade.

Il a ensuite terminé sixième du Tour de France, après la disqualification de Nairo Quintana, un résultat qui ne l'a pas entièrement satisfait car il était surtout venu pour chasser des étapes, lui qui a déjà levé les bras à trois reprises sur la Grande Boucle, à Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne en 2015, Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc en 2016, et Peyragudes en 2017.

En 2023, c'est clairement le général qu'il visera, comme aux plus belles heures d'AG2R, son ancienne équipe, lorsqu'il avait fini deuxième en 2016 et troisième en 2017. Le parcours cette année, très montagneux et ne comportant qu'un seul contre-la-montre de 22 kilomètres, convient parfaitement à ses qualités.

"Le parcours, si je ne vais pas sur le Tour cette année, je n'y vais jamais", a souligné le grimpeur qui fera sa rentrée au Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var à partir du 17 février, avant d'enchaîner sur les Boucles Drôme-Ardèche et Paris-Nice début mars.

Bardet a confié avoir "poussé pour courir en France" auprès de son équipe néerlandaise. Il a aussi inscrit les classiques ardennaises et le Tour de Romandie à son programme, ainsi que deux blocs d'entraînement en altitude de trois semaines chacun à Tenerife, ce mois-ci puis en mai.

Tour d'Italie - Bardet , Dunbar et Martinez connaissent leurs équipiers

Les équipes dsm-firmenich postnl, jayco alula, bora-hansgrohe et astana qazaqstan ont dévoilé lundi leur sélection pour le tour d'italie qui commence samedi à venaria reale..

L'équipe dsm-fiermenich PostNL comptera sur le Néerlandais Fabio Jakobsen pour les sprints et sur le Français Romain Bardet pour "le meilleur classement général possible". Bardet a obtenu une belle deuxième place au récent Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Il a fini septième du Giro en 2021. Les Néerlandais Gijs Leemreize, Julius van den Berg et Bram Welten, le Danois Tobias Lund Andresen, l'Australien Chris Hamilton et l'Américain Kevin Vermaerke complètent la sélection.

Jayco AlUla s'appuiera sur Eddie Dunbar, septième l'an passé. L'Irlandais essaiera "de répéter, voire d'améliorer, le bon résultat de l'année passée." A charge pour l'Australien Caleb Ewan, quintuple vainqueur d'étapes, de se montrer le plus rapide dans les sprints. Les Italiens Filippo Zana et Alessandro De Marchi, les Australiens Luke Plapp et Michael Hepburn, le Slovène Luka Mezgec et l'Allemand Max Walscheid sont les autres membres de l'équipe.

Un sprinteur et un homme du général, c'est aussi la stratégie de BORA-hansgrohe, qui comptera sur le Néerlandais Danny van Poppel pour les sprints et sur Dani Martinez pour un bon classement. Le Colombien avait fini cinquième lors de sa précédente participation au Giro, en 2021. L'ancien biathlète allemand Florian Lipowitz, révélation du récent Tour de Romandie (3e), sera aussi de la partie. Les Allemands Jonas Koch et Maximilian Schachmann, l'Italien Giovanni Aleotti, l'Autrichien Patrick Gamper et l'Irlandais Ryan Mullen seront également au départ.

Le Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko sera le leader de l'équipe Astana Qazaqstan et visera une première victoire d'étape sur les routes du Giro. Le récent vainqueur du Tour des Abruzzes aura à ses côtés son compatriote Vadim Pronskiy, les Italiens Simone Velasco, Christian Scaroni, Lorenzo Fortunato et Davide Ballerini, l'Erythréen Henok Mulubrhan et l'Allemand Max Kanter.

Les 10 favoris du Giro d'Italia 2024

Le Giro d'Italia 2024 débute le samedi 4 mai 2024, l'occasion de se pencher sur les favoris du premier Grand Tour de la saison. Tadej Pogacar fait figure d'immense favori et devra faire face à de nombreux outsiders qui rêvent d'empêcher le Slovène de dérocher son premier Tour d'Italie.

A quelque jours du départ du Giro 2024, c'est l'heure de vous présenter nos 10 favoris. La liste des engagés est plus faible que par le passé, le parcours moins difficile qu'à l'accoutumé et le suspense devrait être pour le podium plutôt que pour la victoire, où Tadej Pogacar est l'immense favori.

Les 10 favoris du Giro 2024, du 4 au 26 mai :

10 - Lorenzo Fortunato - Astana Qazaqstan -  1%

Fraichement arrivé chez Astana, Fortunato a fait de ce Giro d'Italia son objectif majeur. Et le moins qu'on puisse dire, c'est qu’Astana mise énormément sur lui, elle qui est loin du compte. Décevant en 2023, alors qu'il était cité parmi les candidats au top 10, il a changé de préparation, en enchainant Tirreno- Catalogne - Stage - comme tremplin pour le Giro. Un programme qui fonctionne bien ces dernières années. 14e en Italie et 10e en Catalogne, il s'est montré régulier et en progrès. Evidemment, les deux chronos lui sont défavorables mais la 10e place se joue rarement à la pédale. Une échappée peut lui permettre de récupérer ce retard pour intégrer enfin le top 10 de son tour national.

9 - Luke Plapp - Team Jayco ALula -  1%

L'Australien a lui aussi quitté son équipe, Ineos en l'occurrence, cet hiver. Bouché par de nombreux coureurs, Plapp est monté en grade chez Jayco Alula et endosse aujourd'hui le rôle de leader qu'il espérait. Comme à la maison dans une équipe australienne, Luke Plapp est heureux et performant. Sa 6e place sur Paris-Nice est jusque-là son meilleur résultat sur une course à étapes WT et la concurrence était au moins aussi forte que sur ce Giro 2024. Il devrait parvenir à prendre du temps sur certains de ses adversaires lors des chronos et avec une édition moins montagneuse que par le passé, il peut sûrement tenir trois semaines. Cela sera d'ailleurs la grande question de son côté, à savoir sa capacité à tenir 21 jours au top. Avec une Vuelta dans les jambes, il ne sera pas en terrain inconnu de ce côté là.

8 - Damiano Caruso - Bahrain Victorious -  1%

2e en 2021, 4e en 2023, Damiano Caruso est un homme du Giro mais le poids des années commence à se faire sentir. Moins performant qu'à l'accoutumée en début de saison, il a malgré tout l'expérience pour briller sur trois semaines, mais semble moins fort que son jeune équipier, Antonio Tibéri. Il aura sûrement un rôle de mentor sur la course mais peut sans doute intégrer le top 10 dans le même temps.

7 - Antonio Tibéri - Bahrain Victorious - 1%

SI Antonio Tibéri s'est fait aussi connaître du côté extra-sportif en abattant un chat à la carabine, son avenir sportif semble plus glorieux, en espérant que ce soit une "erreur" de jeunesse. 8e du général du Tour de Catalogne, l'espoir italien a impressionné alors qu'il n'a que 22 ans. Il a déjà l'expérience des Grands Tours malgré son jeune âge avec deux Vuelta dont une 18e place prometteuse en 2023. Bon rouleur, très bon grimpeur, Tibéri sera sans doute la révélation de ce Giro d'Italia 2024. La question est de savoir à quelle place il finira. On mise sur une 7e place.

6 - Cian Uijtdebrocks - Visma Lease a Bike - 3%

Hauteur d'une superbe Vuelta en 2023, Cian Uijtdebrocks fut la révélation de la course. Son transfert retentissant chez Visma a été l'un des feuilletons de l'intersaison. Et pourtant, le début d'année n'est pas aussi bon qu'espéré. S’il suit le programme efficace Tirreno-Catalogne- Stage- d ans sa préparation pour le Giro , il n'a pas vraiment engrangé de confiance durant le mois de mars. Sa 7e place à l'arrachée en Italie avant son abandon sur le Tour de Catalogne n'ont pas vraiment rassuré ses supporters et la dynamique générale de Visma Lease a Bike n'aide pas non plus. Dès lors, il va falloir du caractère et une confiance retrouvée, mais le potentiel du garçon est si grand qu'on y croit. Attention néanmoins, c'est sans doute l'un des moins bons rouleurs de notre top 10. Face à Arensman notamment, cela peut compter.

5 - Thymen Arensman - Ineos Grenadier - 3%

Ineos Grenadier aura sûrement l'équipe la plus forte au départ du Tour d'Italie. Avec Sheffield, Foss, Thomas et donc Arensman, elle a de quoi être très solide en montagne pour aller chercher le podium. 6e en 2023 alors qu'il était déjà équipier de Thomas, le Néerlandais a encore des arguments pour faire mieux en 2024. Dans le top 6 de toutes les courses à étapes depuis le début de l'année, il n'y a pas de raison que cela s'arrête sur le Grand Tour italien. Les chronos lui seront très favorables et les étapes de montagne devraient lui convenir. La 5e place est presque un minimum de notre point de vue. Le voir sur le podium ne serait pas une surprise en soit.

4 - Romain Bardet - DSM Firmenisch - 2%

En 2022, Romain Bardet a raté le rendez-vous avec son destin... En course pour la victoire finale, il est peut-être passé à côté de quelque chose de très grand... Moins en jambes en 2023, il a bien fini la saison et semble retrouver un niveau satisfaisant en 2024. 3e de la Classic Var, 17e des Strade Bianche, il est à nouveau dans le match. Son Tour des Alpes a confirmé son retour au premier plan avec une 5e place au général et il sera le leader de son équipe. Il devrait être dans le match pour le podium mais sera défavorisé par les deux contre-la-montre. Mais un Romain Bardet au top de sa forme, 2e de Liège Bastogne, peut très largement rattraper son retard et finir sur la boite.

3 - Ben O'Connor - Decathlon AG2R - 5%

Decathlon AG2R est l'équipe en forme de cette première partie de saison. Le passage sur vélo Van Rysel semble avoir relancé une nouvelle dynamique au sein de la formation française, qui est heureuse de son nouveau matériel . Et Ben O'Connor, le leader de l'équipe, est le principal concerné puisqu'il réalise le meilleur début d'année de sa carrière. Vainqueur du Tour de Murcie en solitaire, 2e de l'UAE Tour, 5e de Tirreno Adriatico, l'Australien est clairement le 3e homme dans notre hiérarchie en montagne. Surtout que tout sourit en ce moment à l'équipe française, 5e au classement UCI 2024. Un podium en GT serait une première depuis Romain Bardet.

2 - Geraint Thomas - Ineos Grenadier - 8%

Malheureux vaincu en 2023, lors du dernier chrono au Monte Lussari face à Roglic, Geraint Thomas est revanchard en 2024. Comme à son habitude, il n'est pas au top de sa forme en ce début d'année mais il se dit " en meilleure forme que l'an dernier à même époque ". Il sera donc prêt pour son objectif majeur mais le voir battre Tadej Pogacar nous paraît improbable. Dans ces conditions, la 2e place semble lui tendre les bras et être la meilleure place possible pour lui, à moins que Pogacar ne subisse un incident de course. Il misera sans doute sur les chronos pour refaire son retard mais même dans cet exercice, Pogacar n'est pas forcément moins bon, au contraire.

1 - Tadej Pogacar - UAE Team Emirates - 75%

Bon, voilà, Tadej Pogacar est au départ donc il devrait gagner sauf incidents de courses. C'est le meilleur coureur du monde et devrait remporter au moins trois ou quatre étapes si ce n'est plus, avant de gérer son avance avec le Tour de France dans le viseur. Et ce scénario a pour nous 75% de chance de se produire. Mais on l'a vu au Pays Basque, on n’est jamais à l'abri de quoique ce soit. Tout est possible en sport.

2024 giro d'italia overview.

The 2024 Giro d'Italia, celebrates its 107th edition this year, with the Corsa Rosa starting in Turin on Saturday, May 4 and ending in Rome with a circuit stage around the Colosseum on Sunday, May 26.

The route will cover 3,400 kilometres and 44,650 metres in vertical elevation across the 21 days of racing. 

RCS Sport, organisers of the race, have designed a balanced race route that includes two time trials (of 40.6km and 31.2km), along with a Strade Bianche-style gravel stage in Tuscany on stage 6 and six mountain top finishes.

Primož Roglič was the overall winner of the 2023 Giro d'Italia but he will not defend his victory, instead he will focus fully on the Tour de France.

The balanced 2024 route has attracted Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step), Cian Uijtdebroeks and Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe), Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché - Wanty), Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Caleb Ewan and Luke Plapp (Jayco-Visma) and Alberto Dainese (Tudor Pro Cycling).

2024 Giro d'Italia Route

The 2024 Giro d'Italia is the 107th edition of the Italian Grand Tour, taking place from May 4-26. 

The  2024 Giro d'Italia route  will see the peloton tackle six summit finishes in the daunting stages through the Alps, Apennines and Dolomites , culminating in the final double ascent and descent of the Monte Grappa before a transfer to the capital Rome for a final stage. 

The route also includes the Cima Coppi, Stelvio Pass at 2,758 metres, positioned mid-route on stage 16.
